he really knows what he's talking about. his class (multicultural communication) was very interesting and a lot of fun. i enjoyed every minute of it.
Course would be better taught straight from the book. Too many gray areas.
I enjoy his class very greatly, partially because it is NOT taught directly from the book (any ape could do that) and partially because he teaches us things that we could actually use in the real world.
This teacher was very disorganized. He likes to pry into people's live, which was very intrusive. He lost the final on the last day of class so we all got perfect score for the last test. He fell behind from the syllabus which caused him to make many correction.
Content of class and teacher are great. A bit disorganized b/c he's writing a book, but despite his book is interesting at least. I finally know what critical thinking means
Took the class three years ago. There were too many papers and tests were hard, but I still use what I learned from the class. It changed the way I see the world. Funny teacher.
He is awesome. He is so smart and the class gets involved with thought provoking conversations. Really interesting class **Highly recommend it
Took class previously,FG was a very poor teacher. He didn't follow his own guidelines of behavior & asked WAY TOO MANY,VERY PERSONAL questions of students-which is NONE OF HIS BUSINESS! This upset the class the most! Had to agree w/him in class to get a good grade even tho outside of class none of us did! Other posts must be his own or of his favs.
i learned a lot from his class about different cultures, however, his tests are really hard. they are comprehensive tests and do not focus on vocabs and terms. i turned my longest paper ever in his class which was 12 pages long.
Practical stuff - Keeps it real
hypocritical, pointed out students to speak based on culture. tests were extremely hard (A & D are true, ABD are true, B & C are true) with fuzzy questions that can have a different answer. had to pay $7 for the workbook (mostly blank pages) and us whites are frowned upon
I was extremely frustrated with this teacher. He did not allow you to be even a minute late. He said he would start taking off points if we went to the bathroom. There were NO homework assignments, but the tests are ridiculous, and the two papers that are assigned he grades EXTREMELY harsh. Don't take him unless you feel like pulling out your hair!
His class was harder then what I expected, but knowledge was good. I had an A because I studied very hard for the workbook and paid attention for the homework. If you want have a good grade from his class, don't forget intergrate theory when you do homework. If you can make it in his class then you will not afraid anyone in the future.
Interesting subject, interesting professor, learning alot, have recommended him to friends
This was an interesting course. I just took the final and it wasn't too hard. The two papers were hard though. Overall, I learned a lot and I think Mr. Gifford is a good, easy-going teacher.
The class material itself was good, but I was upset to learn that the papers are graded quite harshly despite best efforts. The mid term and final were pretty easy, but again, the grading was very harsh. Very challenging class, but I found it to be worth my time and I learned many new things that I will continue to use throughout life.
i think mr. gifford was a great teacher... he really explains the topic and give examples that will help you... he even plays some videos to the class that will help us to be more cautious on how we act to the world... i guess with the papers... just give him info. that will thrill him to know and you will be fine.. tests r easy..
I took this class reluctantly and because it is required for my nursing program. The quizzes are hard and the first paper was easy. The content of the class is okay but the teacher makes it interesting. He's a great teacher with nice legs.
This class was better than I had imagined it to be. The professor was very helpful, approachable, fun, fair, consistent, and extremely knowledgeable. You are involved in the subject matter and encouraged to think about the material in a practical way. I walked away with increased knowledge and awareness of others. Thanks, Fred, for creating this class
Took his summer class, and he was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He makes the class interactive, and you will not get bored. Quizzes were challenging, but he will go through each question in class if you pay attention. Great class/Great guy!
Ok class, sometimes he was very confusing. I don't like his tests because he only uses examples and sometimes his examples can be very confusing.
One of the best professors I've ever had and I've had a lot of them. Makes things interesting by using a variety of teaching methods, especially video. I recommend him to anyone.
OK MR. GIFFORD IS THE BEST TEACHER THAT EVER TAUGHT COMMUNICATION. HE MAKES COMING TO CLASS FUN AND NOT BORING AND REALLY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE MATERIAL. BUT HIS QUIZZES WERE EXTREMELY HARD BUT I WILL RECOMMENDED HIM TO ANYONE. GREAT TEACHER GREAT CLASS.
Professor Gifford offered a great course, well-designed to both TEACH and keep students INTERESTED and ENGAGED. His grading standards were fair and clearly spelled out. It's YOUR fault if you can't follow directions to get a good grade. His respect for all cultures and humility set a standard that we all should aspire to. Highly recommended course.
Great teacher! As long as you put some effort, he will do the same. Always willing to help and made the class interesting (watched a lot of videos). His quizzes are a bit tricky, but as long as you do good on your papers and go to class/participate, you most likely will get an A.
Nice person!!! His classes are always interesting and fun. His quizes are easy as long as you study for them. They all are on the material he provides. Fun class overall.
Fred Gifford is a very good teacher! I was not too thrilled that I had to enroll in this calss and I thought it was only going to be about racism but it's not! You learn so much stuff in his calss and the activities are so much fun! There is only one bad thing about being in his calss and that is attendance. You may only miss 4 1/2 hours of class.
Gifford is a great teacher, clearly committed to his field. He's traveled the world in order to write his own textbook, so he expects you to read it. He is a little biased in some ares, but if you just go with it, you'll be okay. Only downfall: his tests can be very confusing. Don't be annoying in his class, and you'll get an A for sure.
Fantastic teacher! Class is enjoyable. He wants you to succeed and understand. Very approachable. He is reasonable & a bit quirky, but only in the best way. Great sense of humor; be sure to compliment his fantastic hair, seriously. DO NOT HAVE A CELL PHONE VISIBLE DURING CLASS. It is disrespectful; you will lose a full letter grade worth of points.

This class was sooooo boring. Attendance is mandatory. Mr. Gifford confused all of us so much and often told us we were wrong when we weren't. His tests have examples on them often which make no sense.
A funny teacher, but his exams are confusing. Don't let his laid back attitude fool you either- he isnt not laid back when it comes to grading tests and papers. I thought this would be a blow-off class, and I wrong.
He is straightforward and fair. There always seems to be a test or paper due though.
Mr. Gifford wrote his own book and does not use the text. His test are written by him and are extremely confusing. He has trouble separating his personal opinion from teaching material. He is not fair, his class is not engaging or interesting to the student. He is disorganized and changes the syllabus so much no one knows what is due when. D-
Jill?s qualities as a professor: Encourages communication between students and teacher; Uses active learning techniques that incorporate classroom material into real life situations; Incorporates multimedia (PowerPoint and Videos); High expectations for students; Respects the diverse talents of her students; Instructs, motivates, and influenc
He was a really good teacher. He provided good explanations for concepts and good examples for helping us understand them. Expectations were very clear. He has a sense of humor, too. Tests are multiple choice and can be tricky, but if you paid attention in class you should be fine. I would definitely recommend taking this class. I learned so much.
I am taking Intro to Speech with him right now.....he is the wrost instructor!!!! Very confusing, critical, not helpful, disorganized! I have put this class off for so long for my fear/anxiety about speaking in public and he has made it worse! Horrible!
AWESOME teacher! Disagree with the negative comments posted about him. Class was extremely easy as long as you show up for class. I never bought the textbook for this class and still got an A. You only need the workbook. Super fun, interesting, and enlightening. Fred is well-traveled and has great stories. Would definitely recommend him!
Class was super easy as long as you showed up. Speeches were fairly easy and he explains everything and always answers your questions. DON'T BUY THE BOOK!! You only need the workbook, he doesn't use the book at all! Awesome teacher, give him a shot.
avoid this teacher he gets out of track and does not explain the subject well. book is not neccessary but i should by it because his powerpoints are useless. so you will have to study hard to pass his class. average in the class was a C-
You will not need the textbook for the class whatsoever; I purchased it and regretted doing so as I only ended up reading it for but 20 minutes of time. Aside from the time that it took to write the three papers for class, I studied maybe a total of an hour and half, though I did attend all but two of the classes and easily got an A in the class.
I hardly used the book in CMM 121. The class was incredibly easy as long as you went to class and performed the speeches on time. He makes things very clear and very simple, so don't try to overdo anything. He wasn't one of the most enlightening professors, but he is good at what he does. Pay, attention, actually go to class, and you'll pass.
Only took because it was required. Overall he grades too tough for this level of class. However if you follow the rubric you'll easily pass. Never even opened the book but the Midterm and Finals both had questions from the book. Attend class, follow the rubric for speeches and you'll have no trouble passing with an A.
DO NOT take public speaking with him. He's a nice guy but when it comes to teaching communication he is a bad teacher. Constantly contradicts himself, does not follow his own rubric, grades based on his opinion and does not explain why you get the grades you get. The first day he told the class he was still nervous when speaking in front people.
Fred Gifford is a nice guy, he is not very personable but he will take the time to talk to you if you see him during his office hours. Although I received a excellent grade, I had to do extra work in order to receive it, (i.e asking for extra clarification and having to keep up with his rubric since he won't follow it) I suggest another teacher.
Went to every class and still was very confused with his tests. They are tough! He is a hard grader on papers. overall, nice person. Would not take him again.
His class is tough, but if you want to succeed in whatever career it is you decide to do, this class will help you. People within this generation seem to have a hard time communicating in person. Follow his guide, seriously, follow his guide for how he wants your speech to be outlined, you will pass and possibly learn something.
I honestly don't know what everyone is talking about. He's so easy!!! The tests were definitely easy. He's average when it comes to grading. Easy B. If u really take out the time to prepare for your speech, you'll definitely get an A. I got lazy with my speeches.
He is nice. His tests are tough, but they are material covered from the textbook and in-class lectures. He is usually clear for what he expects of a speech. Be careful on the persuasion speech because it is a little tricky to follow the concept. He responds to emails in a reasonable time period. His feedback is very helpful. He is a good teacher.
Mr. Gifford is very willing to communicate in email or in person and give you pointers on your speech if you are confused on anything. I found his brand of humor to my liking, though some may not. There was often smiles in the classroom. His outlines are clear and concise and as long as you follow them you will do well! Don't miss any speeches!
Great teacher! Learned a lot about communicating with different cultures. Very useful life skills.
Really enjoyed his class. He is a pretty fair teacher. He shares a lot of personal experiences to help you understand the material. The quizzes are tough if you don't study but he gives some extra credit opportunities.
He is a nice guy, but he is a tough grader, and expects a lot in your speeches. It is not an easy A, and make sure you do not miss any speeches because it affects your grade drastically.
Liked everything about him and the class.
Mr. Gifford was one of my favorite teachers and he gives you every opportunity to succeed in the class. I've never had a teacher who makes lectures so interesting and keeps students engaged so well. If I needed another communication class, I'd definitely take him.
A very good teacher, highly recommend this class. It is great fun and Mr. Gifford is an amazing teacher. He has a lot of experience in the tough field of intercultural communications. He is respected by my class and we love him. It's a great learning experience and I have no regrets taking this class.
I took both public speaking and intercultural communication from Mr. Gifford and found both to be very good classes. He's a great teacher, he cares about his students.
Loved the class and the teacher. Best I've had at clc
Class was very interesting. Mr. Gifford a great teacher, he cares about his students. Always willing to help with your paper. He gives you every opportunity to succeed . I really enjoyed the class.
Very competent professor. Intelligent, well-traveled, knows first hand the information he teaches for intercultural communications. Class environment was structured yet fun. Put your phones away, show up for class and all will be well.
Such a great class. He cares a lot and by showing interest and efford good grades are definitly possible. He has a lot of knowledge and is willing to help. Great and fun class to take!
Mr Gifford outlines his expectations of your from the very beginning--follow them and you will pass. The same can be said for his grading rubrics. I advise to communicate with him as much as possible so he sees your commitment to bettering yourself and grades. Comes off as care free--is not the case.
Lectures are pretty interesting. Quizzes are really hard. Sometimes doesn't really tie in what he lectures about. There are alot of papers to write. Only gives one extra credit option. Tough grader. He says if you ever need help to come talk to him but it's very hard to catch him and he doesn't really help much.
Prof Gifford cares about his students' success and has high standards for them. Attend class and follow the criteria, and you'll do well. Quizzes and assignments come heavily from lectures. If you don't attend, you'll lose points both on attendance and participation as well as on the questions on quizzes over those lectures.
Fred is pretty good. He seems to be ill prepared some days and it seems like a waste of a class period, but it's not every day. The workbook that he made is helpful, cheap, and clearly explains each speech and what he expects. All in all, the class is very simple. The hardest part is dealing with the initial nervousness.
I learned a lot about public speaking but he was a horrible teacher. So boring and monotoned. he has horrible memory so he wont remember something unless its written down. He treated me as if i was lying one time just because he didn't remember he said it to me a couple of weeks ago.
Although very monotone, Fred was a great professor. The class got better as it went along. As long as you do well on the quizzes and papers you should do fine.
He grades harshly. Hes a good professor but be prepared to take his comments with a grain of salt.
Gives you quizzes that weren't learned in the textbook or workbook. Lots of homework/paperworks and grading rubric are horrible. I would not recommend this class.
Very wonderful class and was sad when work needed me back to 68 hours a week. Not all sharks bite. Fred Gifford is why I wish I could stay one more semester in Lake County, but duty always calls. Mr. Gifford will always tell you what you need to do to pass, or tell you when it is time to withdraw and retake. Respect!
He can come off as cold and robotic but if you asked for help he'll be more than willing to help you out on your speeches. His lectures were sometimes boring but pay attention because the midterm and final are based on them. Textbook was only $5. Make sure to prepare for your speeches. As long as you put in some effort you'll be fine and get an A.
Great class! Fred is an understanding person and will help you out when needed! Prepare your speech on time and you should be good!
For being a public speaking professor this was the most boring class I've ever taken. He reads directly from the slides which are printed out for you in the book. Biased grading on his favorites, as well as if he disagrees with your topic. Very clear rubrics, however I fell asleep many times.
I was one of those students that had him during the pandemic, so everything was done via zoom online. Unfortunately he was not a good teacher in the sense of he was a hard grader as well as close was kind of hard. Its really hard pleasing this guy when it comes to SPEECH presentation done ONLINE! he expected way too much on class that was on zoom
Worst possible teacher had him for summer semester via zoom. He is rude to you does not like to repeat himself. He made a mistake in the grading and instead of checking it he was disrespectful for no reason. Doesnt always respond will take a few days or last minute. Study guides have no information on them just wats how to prep yourself for it.
Fred is absolutely the most boring and rude public speaking teacher I have ever had. He is very monotone, very unclear explanations, doesn't post homework on canvas and expects us to send everything via email, and interrupts you in the middle of your speeches (which is very distracting!!) If you can switch teachers I recommend you do.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Had zero respect for his students and after months of having me in class, he could NEVER say my name correct, despite everytime I would correct him.
The material was easy to learn but he just reads off the slides and doesnt add anything to lectures. I had him during the pandemic which meant zoom classes and he wasnt understanding of any personal matters. If you miss more than 3 classes he will deduct from your grade which includes not turning on your camera for class. Pick another Professor!
Very poor communication. I was sent an email an hour before class saying that my speech outline was "copying someone else's topic" and "unless I created an entire new outline before today's class" I would "get half of my grade deducted." Save yourself the headache and find another teacher!!
I took Mr. Gifford's class through zoom. I honestly feel that he really challenged me. He is a firm person and is clear on the expectations he wants. His expectations are appropriate for the material he teaches and he will specifically point out matters that need to be worked on when turning in your work. Give him a chance! Great teacher.
Terrible communication. Very boring teacher and doesnt know how to keep his audience involved which is ironic because he is a communications professor. Doesnt help you when you ask him for help. I was in your situation once, looking at the professor rating. I saw bad ratings and still went with him for some reason. save yourself the headache.
Fred was a horrible professor who didnt help his students whatsoever. I took his class last semester and it was the worst class Ive ever taken. To start his lectures have nothing to do with the speech ur doing at the time. Second he is very mean and judgemental of his students hence him saying they r gone when people drop. NEVER TAKE FRED
Overall, very nice guy outside of class. What I did not like about this class is the teacher mostly cared about how the outline of your speech was rather than the speech you are presenting to your classmates.
He did seem like he cared more about the outlines and time limits of the speech, but he did make his lectures interesting and easy to listen to. He does seem strict, but if you do the work, youre good.
PUT SOME RESPECT ON MR. GIFFORDS NAME!!! Dude was an amazing professor and I actually took him 2 times. The first was public speaking and the second was intercultural communications. He is the reason I changed my major. W professor
I took this class in person. He was very enthusiastic and if you participated in class, paid attention, you will pass with a great grade. He can be boring sometimes but overall he cared about his students. I would not take him again because he was quite lecture heavy but I had a good time in his class.
VERY unreasonable professor
Fred was a really cool professor. He's nice and very open-minded, an easy grader in my opinion. Sometimes lecture was boring and I really hated the activities he made us do like improv but he never made anyone feel bad and always clarifies what he means. Also lots of extra credit opportunities!
Overall, great professor. I attended Fred's class in person and I looked forward to that class. It definitely had the best vibes out of all my courses this semester. He does expect you as a student to put effort into all your speeches, not just reading off a piece of paper. If you want to become a better public speaker, PICK FRED!
One of the best professors at CLC. Took his class in person, his lectures are very well explained, and he always has good stories to tell. Will give well thought out answers on any question after class, and has put a lot of care into planning his class in general. Made speech a pleasure to take.
Fred Gifford is an very difficult professor. He grades very difficulty and is very harsh. I had a medical emergency and was in the ER. I emailed him asking if I could move my speech to the following class to present. He did not respond until after class and refused to let me present the next day. He refused to grade even my outline for the speech.
Professor Gifford's class had its ups and downs. While lectures could be dry, his enthusiasm and willingness to help made up for it. unstuck AI and practice speeches were key to succeeding. Overall, a solid choice if you're willing to put in the work.
I don't know how I passed that class i wouldn't even particapate.
