I had Hervert for Math 241, he talks 100 miles an hour so I didn't make a lot of sense out of his lectures, but his review sheets are great, best I've ever had, He's also really nice and helpful in office hours.
Good instructor. Works with the student not against them. His reveiw sheets are very helpful. A big help during his office hours. He talks a little fast so you must pay attention or he will loose you during lectures.
Alright guy, i liked him. He did lecture a little fast, and i noticed that he often makes awkwardly long eye contact with people, but its no big deal just nod and he'll gaze will ensnare another student.
Fred really understands how to present math topics so that students can both do the problems and understand why the processes behind the problems work. As a math tutor, I appreciate his teaching immensely and would recommend him to all who need to take this class.
Fred is a great teacher. He presented his lectures very clearly and provided many examples for me to understand the material. He provided review sheets for the midterms and finals and they were very similar to the real test, so it was very helpful!
He's a great teacher. I liked his examples of the problems
He is gret!
one of the best math prof. i've ever had
No Comments
The very best math teacher that I've had in college. Does an exceptional job of explaining things in class and his tests are challenging but fair.
this is a guy who truly loves what he does. he was so enthusiastic. It really helps the learning process when your teacher loves what he is doing
i love this man. best teacher ive had at the u of o. wears the same shirt every day.
"...and uh if you dont understand that then you should go back to math 111" "do a little shop keeping and the answer should be staring you write in the face" "If you think about it aliitle harder youll realize your wrong!!!"
Lectures apply directly to all problems, nothing is ever a surprise. The tests are also accurate representations of what is covered in class. He keeps things simple and is a great teacher.
This guy is great. He actually likes math. He is a bit nerdy, but super cool for a math teacher. No spurprises with this guy.
He is the best math teacher I've had here. And he speaks english!
Great teacher, he is easy to understand and very helpful.
Clear and Informative
He is a very good math teacher. I mean I am still really bored in class and I dose off most of the time, but somehow I understand the material. That is a sign of true teaching.
He's so helpful and concise it's not even funny. Take him if you can, I highly recommend it!
Great professor. Makes everything so clear and loves answering questions. So helpful in office hours. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Take him if you can! I learned a great deal in the class becaue of him.
nice guy & he makes the class really easy
This was a difficult class. Fred was a decent professor and did a decent job of clarifying things. I'm just no math whiz.
great teacher, his Quizez and exams on average. you should work hard to get a high grade Bcoz the material it self is diffecult
great professor
Great Professor! His quizzes and homeworks were fair but we do get some tough chapters in this class. He is always available to help his students during or after class.
Had him for 95 and plan to take him again for 241. He is an awesome teacher! Very clear when teaching new material and always available during office hours for extra help if you need it. You should have no reason to fail this class unless you don't come or don't care. HE IS AWESOME!!
THe best math teacher I have had at this university. CLass is very organized and questions are answered thoroughly. highly recommended.
Math is not my thing but Hervert is really clear and really wants you to succeed. One of the best teachers I have ever had especially for math. I highly recommend him, the class can be tough but he's fair
Excellent teacher, he's really motivated to teach the class, you just have to do your part to do well in his course
HE IS JUST GREAT!!! I TOOK 3 MATH CLASSES WITH HIM AND JUST LOVED IT!
He's alright in lecture, but not too much personality I find. He seems to provide the right materials for you to succeed if you play your part. I suppose the fact that his class is extremely boring can be attributed to the subject matter as well as his teaching style.
Hervert is a quality professor. He knows what he's talking about and what few mistakes he makes are trivial. He does both simple and complex examples, breaks them down in an easy to understand way, and lets you know what you need to learn. Not the worlds greatest sense of humor, but he's charismatic enough to make the class tolerable
good professor also had him for stats only drawback to the classes was my lack of studying
Good teacher. Too much homework with bookwork and webassign combined. Has a very creepy stare if you sit too close in lecture. Midterm was cake but the final was very hard.
He is the worst teacher I've ever had. I would not recommend having him as a teacher. He treats all students like they're stupid and he is extremely rude.
I loved him a a professor for 241 and I'm in his class for 242, too! He has the best notes and he's the best teacher. LOVED HIM. He made math a lot easier to understand.
Good class, calculus is just hard in general. Class made a whole lot easier by having an awesome GTF for discussion.
He can be confusing at times and not completely clear. He skips steps occasionally and his tests are poorly written. But he knows what he is talking about and gives lots of notes and is available for help.
His lectures take a bit to get used to. He tends to skip steps so being completely focused during the class is important. However, once you get used to it, it's very easy to succeed. Uses WebWork, I have yet to open the textbook.
Terrible class. He treated us all like we were stupid and didn't answer questions. I would not recommend him for a lower level math class.
Will skip steps, and not completely finish an example. His lectures are hard to follow, uses lots of examples, but doesn't explain why he's doing what he's doing. I used to enjoy math until this class.
Skips steps and makes class way harder than it should be. This guy doesn't care if you fail the class considering there was a 60% average on the mid-term. Don't take it with him!
I thought Fred was an ok teacher. I am pretty good at math so I didnt have much trouble in his class. However, if I wasnt good at math to begin with, I think I would have struggled in this class. Discussion teachers are key in these kind of lecture classes
Goes fast and skips a lot of steps. Large lecture halls suck! I had to learn Calc 2 myself.
He was absolutely terrible and did not answer any questions anyone had.
Able to tech calculus with a connection to human physiology and biology. Very accessible in office hours for help on homework, which is all online unfortunately. Mostly use the textbook for extra practice. Hard tests but manageable if you do the work and ask for help
His class was really hard for me, but I really struggle with math. His tests are very challenging. I think he is a good teacher and wants his students to succeed.
I had heard bad reviews and this was my second time taking the course so I was terrified. I loved Hervert! I went to his office hours and sat in the front so he knew who I was. Yes he can go fast but if you ask for help, he's willing to give it. I got a B this time around with his help. He's a pretty nice guy if you get to know him.
Fred isn't the best teacher but he's definitely not bad either! His tests are beyond fair though. He only tests you on what he's covered and they are identical to the practice test.
He treated all of us taking the class like we were stupid. He would wait and stare at us for the answer and got annoyed if people asked questions. Awful teacher and it really seems like he hates teaching this class.
Don't take his class. Midterms and final are hard. Final is way harder so if you have choice, don't take the final and keep up with assignments and quizzes each week.
Great teacher he makes you work for your grade. If you slack off you will fail the class.
If you are taking this class to just brush up on your algebra he is a good teacher, unfortunatly this information was new to me, and he is a confusing teacher that explans why you need to know this information for future classes rather than teaching you how to do the actual problem.
A very rude and obnoxious person. He does't care if students are struggling or not. Be prepared to be picked on when you go to office hours. He treats everyone with a disrespectful attitude. Math 111 is an easy class, yet with him, it is the hardest math class there is. Avoid him at all cost.
Speaks too quickly, skips steps in each example so students are left confused about what just happened and how he wen't from 5-6 steps to complete a problem to just 2 steps because he 'thinks' we all know what we are doing having just learning it 5 minutes ago. don't take his class if you can. No curve either.
You will regret taking this class
Unless you can absorb every word he says and fill in the blanks that he skips over you will not learn much from this professor. He is a terrible lecturer, does not care about his students, and considers a 60% class average on a test to be a good thing. He is only here for the tenure, he is a washed up professor who hates his job and his students.
Fred goes over lecture with intense speed, skips steps on every problem which makes it hard to follow what he is explaining. He doesn't do much waiting for students in lecture and just blazes through material and really expects you to know everything. Test are hard and very unlike the quizzes. If you want to pass get a tutoroffice hours with GTF
Iv'e had to teach myself the material because he does a horrible job. If you want to pass, get use to going into the tutoring lab for help. Weekly quizzes are easy if you do the homework before taking them. Don't expect the tests to be similar to the quizzes because they aren't.
He is not a good teacher and not helpful at all.
Quizzes weekly & 3 midterms are given throughout the course. Only given 50 minutes per midterm. If I want to actually understand what's going on in each chapter, I have to spend around 20+ hours a week in math tutoring. He moves fast in lectures; the course is extremely difficult. If you want an A, I highly recommend getting a private tutor.
Avoid taking a class with Hervert what ever you do. Majority of people dont pass his class the first time. He offers no extra credit and doesnt let you use a calculator. His notes make no sense because he skips steps and pre writes them out. His midterms should take students two hours to complete well but he gives them in a 50 minute discussion.
The best way to get an A in Professor Hervert's class is to not attend class. He skips steps, monologues, and is a generally scatter-brained. Learn to teach yourself quickly and rely heavily on the tutoring center and you will do great in this class. To sum it all up: Fred Hervert is the worst math teacher I have ever had.
It is very clear Mr. Hervert does not like his job. He is very unprepared in his lectures. His hand writing is equal to a newborn child. He only gives a minimal curve ( for my class it was a 1% curve when the class average was well under 70%) but don't worry because he lets a 65% pass the class. Don't get used to using a calculator. Great class
He's not as bad as people say... He does a lot of examples in class and goes through every single one. You don't use very much brain power in class. If you like that style. He is a little condescending when you ask questions. Hard homework assignments, average tests.
He is fast-paced and goes over examples that are way harder than on the tests. If you actually study, then everything is understandable. Not as bad as everyone says. Quizzes are almost every week though in the mandatory discussion classes.
Only teacher that was available to take, unfortunately for me. Is not helpful and expects each student to basically teach themselves everything. He goes into a lecture well aware he is about to give out a bunch of new material to a class of 500 and breezes through it. If there is anyone else available, would recommend taking them to avoid him.
He always seemed to be yelling at people and didn't really seem to care if his students did well in the class or not. It was really frustrating..
I know many students thing the math is so hard. But I think this teacher is so nice, he taugh vary clearly. I can understand everything which he taugh. I think he is a good teacher.
Awful teacher. When he does examples in class he skips steps so you cant understand. If you go to office hours he will basically call you dumb. If you can do not take his class!
worst teacher i have ever had. does not explain material well and tests are impossible.
Moves WAY too fast in lecture, skips important steps, and assigns more homework than you can handle. Very cocky and unreceptive to questions or help. hw quizzes and tests are total opposite of what we cover in class. Even an advisor said he was rough. avoid at all costs 0/10 do not recommend
Moves way too fast. Skips vital steps while teaching a brand new concept. His tests seem to be designed to make you fail. Teaches you the very basics then tests you on the most complex forms. Extremely frustrating when you're taking a class, understand the material, but aren't doing well because of a careless professor. He needs to quit teaching.
I thought his teaching sucked. He skips steps and is very arrogant. He assumes students have mastered a concept the second after he has taught it. His tests are way harder than the practice tests he gives you to prepare for. Something is wrong with the teaching when you can easily do the homework, but the tests feel nearly impossible
Lectures are so big its easy to slack off and not pay attention. Even if you are paying attention, its difficult to ask questions when things are unclear (which is common). I'm decent at math and the only way I passed this class was with a paid tutor.
He clearly loves the material, which makes lectures pleasant. However, tests are hard, and the averages are always low. I would suggest going to office hours if you are struggling.
I had Fred for 241 and 242. His lectures are very straightforward, and he provides many examples. Most of the people that struggle in his class do not put in enough time when it comes to practicing the material. Finishing the webwork won't cut it, to succeed in this class you have to practice book problems on your own time.
This man hooked us up! He prepared us incredibly well for the midterms, which only made our grades on the final higher. He has a great energy to his teaching. You can tell he is interested and will help you if you go to office hours!
Hervert is a good professor, even though some people may disagree. As long as you make an effort to understand the material and don't miss class, quizzes, or homework you'll pass.
Have had him twice and once was too many. This guy is too smart for his own good, doesn't show his work in a calc class because "algebra is a prerequisite for this class" Probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard a teacher say. Apart from this, he speeds through his lecture and insults your level of intelligence if you ask a question.
Forge this class. Having him refuse to show his work definitely adds to difficulty and his condescending teaching style does not help. You would think with a class of 500 students, discussion would discuss lecture material. Not the case. Dont take this class unless you're prepared for endless stress.
Fred knows the material well and think all of his students should be on his level. He didn't really care about his students and his attitude made it difficult to learn, especially when you were scared to ask questions because you were expected to be a rocket scientist.
