Professor Hoffman is a decent gentleman. However, he assumes that his students have only one course to study during the semester so he gives too much homework that is due one week ahead of his lecture. Also, he skips a lot of slides during lectures. I do not recommend this professor.
When you read the syllabus: you can bring a formula sheet When you take the exam: you are not allowed to use a formula sheet No further comments
He has real world experience and brings it into class. Expects students to work. Took him for Fixed Income (not easy material by any means) and it was the best finance class I took. Expect to read a lot. Fair grader but will make you work it. Work load was reasonable. I'd take take another class with him no questions asked.
Took him for Fixed Income and despite the other reviews he is a great professor. If you take this class with no interest in fixed income yes it will be hard, but if you are interested in the subject I highly recommend this class. His real world experience is definitely a plus and he even projects his Bloomberg on the screen to help show examples.
Professor Hoffman is a great professor. I learned a lot of vocabulary that will help me when I get a job, requires a lot of reading and homework (Because of the McGraw Hill Book and Questions)(but 20% of grade) He is very helpful out of class and breaks down concepts well. A lot of work but that is uniform across investment analysis.
Professor Hoffman is a finance practitioner. He respects his students. However, he goes over textbook really fast and gives very hard test questions. If you are a good at self- studying, I definitely recommend him. If not, you may consider another professor.
I personally though that Hoffman was a good professor. While he does assign a lot of homework and skips slides during lectures quite frequently, his exams are fairly straightforward and manageable. He cares about his students and makes his lectures as entertaining as possible. He also has real world experience which is fantastic.
It was a privilege to take a class with Prof. Hoffman, who recently retired from a top-tier multi-strat credit hedge fund. He brings 100% of the knowledge you'd expect from that caliber of a practitioner, with 0% of the ego. For those willing to put in the effort requisite for the class (and a career in the industry), expect exponential returns.
Excellent Professor. Listens to past feedback & made adjustments so we could be successful. Have to work hard for your grade but definitely possible to get an A. I'm not finance major but I was able to understand. Teaches real world material; guest speakers. 3 tests, HW weekly. Recitations helpful. Approachable. Really learned; glad I took class.
Took him for Financial Management for Finance Majors. Do all of the online homework. You get a notecard/cheat sheet for all exams. Open-ended problems are very straightforward - just have the formulas. Must read the textbook to understand conceptual multiple choice. Do this and you should get an A or B+ no problem. Great professor!
Great professor. Really understands the subject, has experience in finance, and tries to bring it to the classroom. Class isn't too hard, doing online homework and reading the textbook is enough to pass. Really understanding and flexible.
FM (For FInance) has a lot of HW and Hoffman might come off arrogant at times, but that aside the class is graded on curves so you'll probably end with a better grade than you think. Hoffman drops a lot of exam hints during lecture and you get a notecard for exams so it's not bad. I did way below average on the first exam but still ended fine.
Taking Investment Analysis with Professor Hoffman was one of the best things I could do. I learned an exponential amount more in his class than any other and I enjoyed going. He is knowledgeable and passionate about fixed income. He brings real-world experience into the classroom and uses the Bloomberg terminal to explain textbook concepts.
Decent proffesor. Learned a lot in this class and would definitely recommend taking his class. Lectures are interesting and he is pretty helpful with any questions.
Very biased towards the less-than-sexy fixed-income subject area and consequently quite knowledgeable in that field. He definitely came across as arrogant and rude at times but seemed to have softened up as the semester went by. He was very unclear about what he expected from the class project and thus his evaluation was highly unfair.
Investment analysis- grade consists of 2 midterm exams, a group project, homework and final. Hoffman knows what he's talking about, but this course was completely unorganized. online homework's due dates are so random- assigns homework due a week before he gives a lecture on it. Exams are much harder than he prepares you for. curves class avg grade
Professor Hoffman is very knowledgable about fixed income, and it shows in his lectures. The class was challenging, and you definitely have to work for your grade, but he is very accessible in office hours. He wants his students to do well, and is a good mentor in giving career advice. I would recommend taking this class.
I learned more in his fixed income class than any other course I have taken at Rutgers (Im a senior). Hilarious. Makes all of the material relevant to the real world. Very willing to help with career related stuff. If you miss a single lecture you will not do well on exams. Best prof in the finance department in my opinion.
One of the only professors I've been taught by who does not stick to the book and gives real-life knowledge. Has a ton of experience, so going to his class gives you valuable knowledge for entering the workforce. Cares about students, always helps at office hours. Difficult class, need to understand concepts, but worth it (not for slackers)
I liked that he had a lot of real world experience. He appreciates participation in class and is pretty straight forward. A lot of people take him again if given the opportunity. A good bit of online homework assignments, just do them, its part of your grade! Attendance is not mandatory but was helpful come exam time.
Hoffman has real world experience that he applies to the classroom to make mundane lectures more interesting. In terms of workload, it's definitely a lot but it prepares you well for future finance classes. Definitely write down the formulas on your notecard and study for exams. Would definitely take him again for Fixed Income / Credit.
worst professor i have ever taken in my life. too many thinks to do in this class, 3 exams, all accumulative, a group project McGraw hill connect quiz if you are part time student, don't take this class. professor goes too fast, too many chapters, you will hardly gt anything out of his class.
Pros: Hoffman provides real-world experience to the classroom that makes class different. He is the only professor (for this class at least) to let us learn Bloomberg Terminal. A 3x5 notecard as a cheat sheet. Pop quizzes that add to final exam grade Cons: 19 Chapter Cumulative final. A LOT of homework. Goes through slides/chapters really fast.
This prof will absolutely work you to the bone in his classes: never ending hw, tough exams, and will cover over 19 chapters full of differing concepts. To remedy this, he hands out a super liberal curve and a top notch education. Take him if you want to learn.
Take him if you want your mind to be blown with real world information. Avoid him if you just want the grade. Goes really fast during lecture, lots of homework, and 2 surprise pop quizzes in the semester (extra points towards your final). Exams are cumulative and there are about 20 chapters covered, and don't think the math will save you.
Professor Hoffman is easily one of the most knowledgeable finance professors at Rutgers. All of his real-world experience ties perfectly into lectures, in a way that makes it seem like the content you're learning actually has practical value. The course is in no way intended to be easy, but Professor Hoffman definitely sets you up for success.
Professor Hoffman is one of the few professors who genuinely care about teaching the course content so their students understand. If you have a question, he'll answer it to the fullest until you understand what the answer is and how he got there. The class is tough, but it's good to have a professor in your corner who cares.
Professor Hoffman did a great job teaching this course! He's one of the few professors who genuinely care about teaching the course content. He's really easy to talk too and if you go to office hours, he will help you with the course matter. Just make sure to show up to class! He's also had lots of real world experience.
Professor Hoffman's credit class was a great follow up to fixed income. 2 exams, no final (great for seniors) & a few projects. Lectures were discussion-based with some credit concept slides, some real-world bankruptcies, plenty of news, and LOTS of guest speakers. Hoffman makes it a really interesting and relevant class with career advice too!
Professor Hoffman is a top professor at Rutgers with a ton of experience that will give you the best preparation for a job in Finance. His lectures and assignments are real-world based, so you'll be spending time learning about things that are ACTUALLY relevant to your future career. His class makes your tuition and time at RU 1000% worth it!
Professor Hoffman's credit class was the perfect senior year class. There were 2 exams and no final. Lecture was a great time because Hoffman made the content engaging with real-life examples. There are also a lot of guest speakers that were really great! Overall, Hoffman just wants his students to succeed and he provides great career advice.
Prof Hoffman is def one of the best choices. I did pretty badly on the second midterm but was still able to get a decent grade in the class bc of the huge curve. Tough class and be prepared to do a lot of work for it, but it's worth it in the end.
I have had Professor Hoffman for 2 finance classes, and he is an amazing professor. If you want to actually learn real-world finance concepts, take him. A lot of bloomberg, a lot of current event discussions, and he is very clear what he is looking for in the exams. Professor Hoffman truly cares about his students, I highly recommend!
Hoffman is my pick for the best fin management professor. While his class can be a bit hard at times, it's only because he expects a lot from his students. He is an extremely knowledgeable professor who wants nothing more than to see his students succeed and learn. Uses his background and legitimate passion for markets to make lectures great.
Professor Hoffman does an amazing job of teaching finance holistically and thoroughly. If you want to learn a lot, take him. However, that being said, the setup of his class makes it hard to properly assess your grade up until the end. There are three exams and all of them are on homeworks that you have to go over and learn yourself.
He's super knowledgeable and willing to help you out in office hours. But his exams are tough and require a lot of outside practice / studying of your own. Not an easy A but if you keep up its worth it
Hoffman is the best professor I've ever had at Rutgers. I took him for both fixed income and credit analysis, where I learned more than I've learned at my 4 years in RBS. He's filled with knowledge, expertise, and real-world examples. He brings in incredible guest speakers. Tons of content covered but well worth it.
I really hope he's different in person. Online he just breezed through the lectures and was really hard. I really feel like he didn't explain things. I think this was because of the online environment and we didn't participate. But he was also really rough and not caring. Very knowledgeable, but I would take someone else if you can.
He's very knowledgeable about finance but he's very strict and suspicious of his students because we were online. He doesn't give ample time to complete the exams that are mostly math questions - NEED a financial calculator or you won't pass.
Hoffman's Fixed Income class is difficult, and he doesn't dumb the material down for his students. Take his class if you truly enjoy learning about financial markets; this is not an easy elective. His exams are tough, but the homework is easy. Take good notes, study the material in-depth, and you'll be fine.
Prof Hoffman is very experienced and knows what he's talking about. His lectures are also interesting. His exams though are very very different from what he goes over in class. He does not go over any of the calculation problems he throws on the exams. He doesn't even teach the problems on exams, and they're not easy so don't expect to get an A/B.
Professor Hoffman is very smart and knows his way around finance, but he is not a very good Professor. He assumes students know a lot and jump from topic to topic during lectures. Doesn't do math problems in class but exams are half conceptual and half math.
I've never taken a worse professor. He does not care enough about his students to actually teach them the content on the exams. I would not recommend at all.
Take any other professor if you can. He doesnt care to make the students learn the material/do well. Difficult class to begin with, but I ended up changing my major because of this class/professor.
Is really rude and intimidating to students for no reason, makes you hate the class. The grading makes no sense and zero curve. I've taken harder classes and still did exponentially better in them than in this one. Take a different professor and you'll get a better grade. I really don't know why most reviews are 5 stars, must not be legit lol
He's really knowledgeable about the financial industry but could do a better job teaching the concepts and doing practice problems with the class. The closest things to the math questions on the exams are the homework problems. I found reading the textbook the most helpful but he could defintely do more on his part too.
The goat. Take his special topics in credit class... he has amazing guest speakers come in almost every week. Fixed income was hard but this class not as hard. Don't listen to the rest of the soft reviews, he's a straight up guy and is going to teach you something.
Highly recommend his credit analysis class. Nothing in the credit analysis class that we did I ever thought was just busy work. He also brings in guest speakers like every other week that talk about their roles in credit and give career advice to the class. THERE IS NO FINAL! Only 2 exams and papers.
He may come off as tough and a little intimidating, but he is super helpful during office hours if you ever need career advice / extra help. Pay attention, do a little self studying and keep up with current events and youll be fine
Really makes me wonder why Fred hoffman teaches at Rutgers with the knowledge he claims to possess. Never seen a professor talk down to/joke about the students so much. Really just an assclown of a human. Should be retired with the trades he claims to have made in the financial world. Zero class from him and a bad look for the business school.
Hoffman is definitely a hardass. He makes it very clear in class that attendance is mandatory and that the class wont be easy. He is pretty cocky but he also likes to joke around and keep lectures lighthearted. If you go to class, take good notes and genuinely try to study and you will be fine.
I took hoffman last year. Professor Hoffman is horrendous. The guy is completely full of himself which doesn't allow him to improve as a teacher because he thinks he is perfect. My friend in intro to finance said he has an exam the day after the superbowl which is wild.
he's hard for sure, but a good professor if u go to class and like fast paced lectures. just do the hw and review problems he puts out for everyone and u should be good! he doesn't give enough time for exams tho, but overall, his lectures are easy to understand and he uses a lot of real world events to help u understand concepts
Ok look: Hoffman is NOT a bad professor. Fin Mgmt for Fin Mjrs with him IS BRUTAL, however. I loved his lectures - he was self-aware, smart, and entertaining. His class is just insanely hard. TONS of reading, notes, and quizzes on Box/Canvas. He is in no way "easy" and I just barely scraped by. If you're able, pick an easier professor!
Yes, he's extremely cocky, yes his class is very fast-paced, and yes he can be a little condescending, but definitely not a bad guy on a personal level (and certainly not a bad connection to have). Exams are pretty tough just because they cover so much material. Definitely study A LOT if you end up in his section, it's no joke
Hoffman is a good lecturer and professor. He gives great insights on the financial markets outside of the textbook, and brings in guest speakers that really help you network. Yes he is tough, finance is not the easiest major, do not expect easy classes. Do the work you'll be fine. For project, do valuations!! Prof, more info on expectations on proj
Took him for the second time. This course is VERY difficult and requires a LARGE amount of work/studying. He's probably one of the smartest and most entertaining professors I've ever had at Rutgers and 100000% knows his stuff, but his exams and content are also probably the hardest I've ever had at RBS. Put in the work and you'll at least pass.
If you put in some effort you pass the class. Just study for the tests, the paper's aren't too bad. Hard to get an A but also pretty hard to fail. Entertaining guy and sometimes goes through the material quick. Professor, I know you're showing the class this, SHOW UP TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES AND YOU WILL BE FINE !!
Difficult course but Hoffman's a great professor and very knowledgeable. Exams are tough but if you put in the work & go to class you'll be fine. Definitely got more out of this class than I have from other finance courses. Very chill & thoughtful Professor, one of my favorites I've had in business school so far
Please do not take this professor. He makes a tough class extra tough. I would avoid taking him, but if you take him, make sure you study hard and don't slack. If you are not finance-minded, be ready to put 4-6 hours a week for this class outside of homework. He is very knowledgeable but he also expects everyone to grasp new concepts fast like him.
Hoffman is a great prof. if you want to learn. Exams are mostly MC with some short answers. If you attend lectures, take notes, and look through his slides you will be able to do well in his class. It is a lecture heavy class but very informative. Took him for two classes and learned greatly.
Honestly, Hoffman is an amazing professor. But this class material is just a lot and hard. I personally studied the most at my time at rutgers, for this class. I learned the most in this class than I have in my four years. I also got a 40 on the first quiz but I pushed through and end up doing pretty well!
Professor Hoffman is truly a great professor. If you attend class and participate in class discussions, you will learn SO much. I loved the class and would definitely take another one.
Professor Hoffman has a ton of industry experience which translates well into his lectures for any course he teaches. Just go to class and don't be afraid to participate. The class itself has a somewhat loose structure but Hoffman grades generously. As long as you go to class and show effort you'll learn a ton while also getting a good grade.
If you aren't knowledgeable about fixed income, you definitely will have to put in the work to learn. Professor Hoffman will teach you an insane amount about finance and it is really beneficial but don't walk in expecting an A. It's almost impossible to get one.
The class covers a ton of material very quickly, but it's all important and relevant to the investment profession. Prof Hoffman makes the class quite rigorous and incorporates his own experience into the curriculum — take him if you're serious about learning finance (not if you're looking for an easy A)
If you struggle with fast-paced, heavy homework classes, avoid Hoffman! Expect many hours of work outside class—tons of homework, & you will NOT do well exams if you skip them or class. He's a good at teaching but rude & condescending. The speed/content is overwhelming as he goes through crazy amounts of content very fast.
DO NOT take this class. It was a last resort, BUT I REGRET IT. hes EXTREMELY rude to students and if you ask a question he'll make you seem dumb. His exams are HORRID. he boasts about how majority of the students in his class don't finish the exam, like he's proud of that. he also speaks way to fast during class its impossible to take notes. dont.
He doesn't give any sample exams or study guides. Also, you can not use the phone during the lecture. There is not enough exam information on Canvas and even if you go to class there also is not much information about it. Lastly, other courses are allowed to print their slides but what you can get for this class exam is JUST TINY LITTLE NOTE CARD.
the professor is racist towards international students
he cares so little about his job it is crazy. he uses AI for everything, including his exams, which has numerous mistakes every exam. he leaves for florida or the bahamas 3x a semester and just clearly is only there for money or to feel good about himself. im stuck with him again for investments, dont be like me.
He makes the class much harder than it should be. Exams are ridiculously hard compared to the HWs and class problems. The class becomes self learning as the professor rushes through concepts in class. He treats the class like it's an advanced finance class instead of intro. Save your GPA and your time and take this class with another professor.
He's really smart but expects way too much of his students. He doesn't even give the full 3 hours for the final, which was 80 questions and extremely difficult.
Fixed Income is definitely one of the hardest RBS classes. If you want to pass, you have to show up to class. The class is lecture heavy and fast-paced. I learned best by attending lecture, taking notes, and watching his old recorded lectures to reinforce the material. But i give credit that Hoffman is knowledgeable and you will learn a lot.
Avoid him if you are not a finance major. He breezes through lectures and expects too much from his students. He also does not have a very approachable attitude. If you do end up taking him, make sure to watch his video lectures and try to have all concepts from that lesson down before class because you mostly won't understand the way he teaches.
I will be as unbiased as possible when I give my take about this professor. He doesn't go over his slides well. He expects you to understand the material like its the back of your hand prior to actually learning it, when I went to office hours he used ai to explain questions and for his final he gave material that wasn't covered.
He is super unhelpful, doesn't give any answers. Asking and not asking is the same. Don't take him
took 300 intro, wasnt that hard, just need to put in ample work. tests and everything were fair
Hoffman looks out for all his students, especially those who are driven. As a Hispanic woman in finance, his advice and connections gave me a leg up. He wants women and minorities to succeed and even reached out to companies to vouch for me when I shared my career goals DEFINITELY try to take him not only for the material but also for career advice
I don't think he particularly liked me, but he's objectively a very good teacher.
Lectures are very engaging and super interesting and the class structure is unique b/c it's a lot of guest speakers, etc. Exams are very difficult though, so don't take unless you are genuinely interested in the credit space. Even if you do mid on exams there is still opportunity to pass (50% of grade is group projects).
Hoffman has an ego, as most of us do. He knows he has made more $ than we can fathom. He is arrogant at times. He shows little care for his job, MANY exam mistakes. On the flip side, he is as knowledgeable as they come. When he shares his experiences, very valuable to say the least. Most of the content you need to teach yourself. Am taking him again.
bahhhhhhhh
Professor Hoffman is an amazing teacher. If you actually want to learn don't take him if you think you're gonna get it easy A. I'm not a super Scholarly person, but I found myself talking about his class outside of class with my peers great professor very fair.
