Amazing.
Truly brings art history to life. Too bad the slides are often sweaty .
You haven't lived until you've experienced art history through this man's eyes.

I'm becoming an Art History minor because of him. He's simply amazing.
As someone said, he brings Art History to life! He knows what he is talking abt
Kleiner's the reason I decided to minor in art history, he weaves a story
Wonderful lectures, no one could top him.
They must put him as the teacher in order to convert art history majors.
A master. Like being taught by God himself. Wrote the book -- keep it!
best lecturer ever
Nice guy, great class.
Great lectures, hard tests
The nicest and most learned man man I've ever met.

Knowledgable, friendly, and funny. A great lecturer. Ignore the moron who rates him poorly because he's bitter about some grade he got on a paper. He didn't deserve an A anyway.
Great class, great lectures, great teacher...hard tests, The class was extremely interesting, but definately not an easy A
I think the class would have been better if he spoke more and let the pseudo-lecturers shut up!! If I opened his head--there would be volumes of Roman Antiquities!! He rocks my cradle!!!
such a good professor, so interesting. He knows soo much about the topics and loves to teach them. Definatly a great class to take.
Condescending, pompous and perfect for those who are easily impressed. Tells the same jokes over and over. If you read his book, don’t come to the lectures – nothing new there.
Excellent speaker, friendly and eager to get to know students personally.
Class is amazing! Great lecturer, clarity and subject matter--take this class!!
So you think that's he's easy, but AH 111 and 112 are a joke, get to the real stuff and he expects publishable papers from you, bitter that's he's not teaching at Yale like his wife, very aggressive and not as friendly as he seems...you'll see
He IS pompous, and I can say that still having gotten an A in the class (you don't have to be a moron to notice the guy's flaws--see comment below). It's a great class, but he is sooo self-appreciative and condescending.
You'll never find a more knowlegable lecturer. AH 111 is difficult because there is a lot of information to cover but Prof. Kliner makes it managable because his lectures are engaging and very clear. It's DEFINATELY a course worth taking.
Organization of lectures is amazing. You learn so much it is rediculous. A lot of memorization but that's the nature of any art history class. Loves to get to know students and pokes fun at the administration. Great class, great teacher!
Something is strange. Bad ratings for this guy just seems to disappear! Last I checked he had 4 bad ratings!!!! And now they are gone... Beware, he is not at all nice. I hope this rating stays put.
"Sometimes I get a postcard from an old student of mine, and I don't even recognize the name, and it is a picture of the parthenon, and says: 'Dear Prof. Kleiner, thank you SO MUCH for ENLIGHTENING me, blah blah blah..." Disgusting.
True, the man is pompous. Ok, very very pompous. However, the fact remains that he is an incredible professor. He memorizes each of his hour and half lectures to the exact word. On a personal level I can't stand him, yet as a professor he's an inspiration
He apparently memorized his lectures years ago: he says nothing you won't find in the Gardner book. Arrogant for no good reason; don't be impressed too easily.
Are you kidding that he's pompous?!?! This guy is amazing. He has always tried to reach out for us when we were confused or just needed the lights raised up to read our notes. What other professor on the first test stops the day before to do a Qa
Because of comments like this last one (see below), people like Kleiner are allowed to teach. Two words: bitter and insecure. Tells everyone about his clearly fictious former students who write him thank you notes about how much he influenced their lives
Awful
i don't know how three smiley faces makes a good rating overall, and i certainly don't know how anyone could benefit from taking a class with a professor whose self-satisfaction seems to stem from the fact that he's memorized the textbook.
y'll are misguided... actually he WROTE the book, he didn't memorize it. He's incredibly well-spoken and dynamic.

ok, so he's pompous. But you dont have to be friends with the guy. Fact is he's an amazing professor. I hung on his every word during every lecture and LOVED the text books (for AH111 and AH112) that he wrote. He's good, he's clear and he's smart.
Nice guy, undeniably pompous, but for good reason. His lectures are always interesting. If you get a chance to be in his discussion section, definitely take it. We got to go to the MFA with him. He definitely knows his stuff.
Extremely knowlegeable, and excellent in his discussion section. If you have the chance to do honors, DO IT! You see a differnt side of him than the normal class gets to see, and you get to study more than what's just in the book. The best way to like this class is to get involved and TALK!
Kleiner is a wonderful teacher. He is very knowlegable in his field and he makes lectures fun. However, be careful of your TA whatever you do don't get some girl named Anna she honestly sucks at life and has no idea about Art History. Study hard but good class.
i loved going to this class. although the teacher might not have had the best sense of humor, he is extremely knowledgeable in what he teaches. a LOT of work, but if you enjoy history and art, it's a very interesting class.
great class to learn about art and the history behind it. TF's are all awesome, funny, and helpful. kleiner lectures all period, but its not a bad class. a lot of memorization needed.
He is very intellectual and definately knows the material he is discussing (after all he wrote the book!) Art History is a lot of memorization and I have to admit I dozed off in a few of his lectures to the sound of his monotunous voice.
Kleiner is very intertaining in class. He shows you some art with sex appeal which makes the long lectures bearable. The art becomes interesting with him but its easy to fall asleep in the dark auditorium. The TAs will help you. There's alot of memorization but you'll get better grades than you think.

wow, he knows his stuff, yes. And it's great that he wrote the textbook, because then you can still do well if you fall asleep in class. His tests are graded harshly and without a curve. But he is very easy to talk to at office hours.
The tests arent graded harshly, if you study youll do fine, they are graded very fairly.
Easy, fairly and quickly graded tests. The class is well organized, but sometimes dull.
Kleiner has a really calming, hypnotist-like voice during lecture. Personally, I thought the subject matter was really interesting, and the tests are really easy as long as you study the dates, names, and origins of pieces of art, and can easily BS something about the difference between two pieces.
I am quite certain that Kleiner is writing his own evaluations here. Everyone I talked to in class thought him dull, mediocre, pompous and very unpleasant. It is a shame that my first art history class had to be taught by this man.
Well, I took the course long ago, Kleiner was one of the best, clearest lecturers I ever had. The assignments were interesting, too.

He does have a fairly monotone voice, but the humorous, spontaneous "Kleinerisms" kept me intersted in class. He's very direct and extremely helpful. I asked a question to which he didn't know the answer; he went out of his way to find out the answer for me. I'm SO glad he was my first AH professor.
Knows what he's talking about! Interesting and fun.

For an introduction class it is extremely hard. Lectures are boring, and Kleiner does not make it any more interesting. Exams are VERY difficult and papers are graded harshly. DO NOT take if just trying to fulfill an elective.
The class is very interesting and the professor is extremely knowledgeable. However, the criteria for grading papers is extremely harsh. The exams are also challenging: a lot of memorization of details.
Very helpful in discussion, has an extensive understanding of western art history; in fact, he revised the textbook. Took time out of his night to bring his discussion section to the museum. Kleiner is dedicated to the students, although a little harsh on grading.
Ppaper grading is harsh, to say the least. Tests are straightforward but require a LOT of studying. GREAT lecturer, very interesting, tells sex jokes!
Kleiner is amazing...I loved his class! The papers were hard and I had to study a ton, but I learned a lot and I discovered a new interest in art. He's also hilarious and tells sketchy jokes all the time.
He is so interesting, and makes lectures really enjoyable. He makes jokes (usually about sex).. but he's like a teddy bear... He is a very hard grader.. but it's worth it because he's so freakin good... RECOMMENDED!!
Amazing professor, great at teaching both the big picture and the details. Studying for the his midterm was insanely difficult and his paper grading is a little rough, but I would still say it's fair. I took this class as an elective and now I'm minoring in AH because of him- definitely recommend the class!
Taking Professor Kleiner's class was one of the best experiences of my first semester at college. He's very intelligent and knowledgable about his field; he's also very funny and entertaining. On the downside, the class is extremely difficult, but completing the course is rewarding and you really learn a lot. Overall, a great class.
The worst professor of Art History I had at BU--and I am an AH major. Discouraging and unhelpful to students. His lectures are monotonous and boring (yes, with occasional few jokes that he repeats every year).
kleiner is cool but hard as hell. I wouldn't take this class unless you have to. I love art history, but I hate getting bad grades.
there is just SO much material to cover. A great thing about the class though, is that you can either go to lecture and NOT read or go to JUST discussion and do the reading. 4 the test he chose pieces that we looked at ALOT in class so it was kind of obvious and you had a lot to say. his voice can put you to sleep but i LOVED what he had to say
His classes are really interesting and although he talks somewhat monotonously, he still keeps his student interested. He seems to really know his material and have a love for the course. However, he is a really difficult grader.
kleiner gives great lectures. However, his tests and papers are very difficult. Art History is hard because the dept. knows people will take it because they think it's easy. His TA's know nothing and they are ****es. Don't take the class unless you have to.
Kleiner can be a bit dry, but at other times is hysterical. knows ancient art back and forth and it shows in his lectures. lost of images to know for his test, but overall its not terrible.
Professor Kleiner gives the best lectures I have ever experienced at BU. He really fosters an interest in the subject and you can tell its really his passion. Its a difficult class if you dont really seek out individual help. Meet with your TF to discuss papers. Unfortunately it is necessary to study extensively for exams but they are fair.
I took art history in high school and loved it, so I decided to further my knowledge and take it at BU. However, I learned less in the college than in high school! I found it difficult to generate interest in the subject without in-class discussion, and Kleiner was pretty boring, save a few shining moments (****, for example).
He is very clear in lectures and incredibly knowledgeable. However, he is kind of a pompous jerk. 111 is an easy A though.
Sort of monotone voice, but his knowledge surpasses it. Interesting lectures, although hard to be motivated to go to class since its so huge. Sense of humor helps, but at the end my grade was a worse than I thought deserved.. Oh well
If you have any interest in art history, you will love this course. Prof. Kleiner is extremely intelligent, and his lectures are very interesting. Some people complain about his voice, but it didn't bother me at all. I learned so much from this class, and I will definitely take more art history courses in the future. Highly recommend Prof. Kleiner!
Knows his stuff, lectures are mildly interesting, if you show up for lectures you'll never need the book, makes awkward sex jokes frequently, gets political when it's completely unrelated... impossible grading... hes kind of pompous, but at least he got me to like art history!
Knows his stuff! Gives great context for pieces, makes lecture very interesting. Don't take if you're looking for an easy course, as lots of memorization is involved...
Loved Prof. Kleiner! Very sad that he only taught first half of semester. Speaks very slowly, but this didn't bother me. He's the AH department chair, so obviously he's knowledgeable. Definitely convinced me to minor in AH. Take this class!
OK, do NOT take this class as an elective for humanities, while yes it is interesting and you learn a lot, if your trying to boost your GPA this class is a big mistake. Papers are graded as if your graduate students, and unless you pride yourself on being able to memorize a 6 inch stack of index cards for the midterms, stay away!!! take ethics!
I love Fred. His enthusiasm rubs off. I love his sex jokes. He's such a funny, knowledgeable person. He's a rock star. Not a bad lookin guy either! ;)
He is very knowledgeable and funny. While he is a little pompous, his lectures are interesting, but it's not the class to take for an easy humanities credit. There's a lot to memorize for midterms, and the TFs do not grade essays leniently.
Awful man, very pompous, grades unjustly, most definitely a GPA down grade, picks favorites, glad I left BU.
Did I also mention that he is very unhelpful and not friendly? A fool is impressed with him too easily. He makes you feel worthless.
Kleiner is great! Amazingly knowledgeable about architecture. Exams focus more on concepts than memorizing names and dates which is awesome. I would recommend auditing this class though because it's a GPA killer, but it's too interesting not to take.
He's a great professor. Such a shame that he leaves mid-way through the semester. Kahn is not as good. Kleiner is really enthusiastic about art and always shows photos of his travels to various museums/monuments. His voice is nice but a bit monotonous. He has a really great sense of humor that makes lecture a lot more bearable.
I love Prof. Kleiner! He is so funny and his lectures are really interesting. You don't really need to read the book because he wrote it and pretty much regurgitates it.
He makes everything super clear and easy to understand. Very approachable and really knows his stuff. Because it is an intro level class he did not go as in depth as I would have liked. I would jump at the next opportunity to have him as a professor
There is a lecture, which he teaches, then a discussion. Attendance is not mandatory for discussion but you should go bc he is charismatic and it helps to get the information, then attendance for the discussion is mandatory. Paper graded easily but the midterm and final are HARD, so much art work to memorize and analyze.
One of the best lecturers you will ever encounter. This guy wrote the art history bible so you know he knows his stuff. Lectures were extremely entertaining. Like watching a really good and engaging documentary. The lectures tell a story of human history illustrated by the greatest works of art known to man. It's awesome.
A LOT of readings and artworks to memorize. Not a easy class to pass. Try to find another humanity courses instead of AH111 unless you are really interested in ancient artworks, architectures and sculptures. Make me really feel tough in the exam. The discussion section is helpful, go and find your TA before exam or paper.
Fred Kleiner is one the best art history professors! His lectures are engaging and well-prepared, and he always adds his own sense of humor. He is very friendly and approachable.
Professor Kleiner really knows his stuff--you should ace his test if you attend lectures and pay attention. I think he did a nice job of connecting art pieces from across time and explaining concepts that you'll need to mention on the test. He wrote the textbook used in AH111, so that's infinitely valuable.
Love this guy. Such a great lecturer and you can tell he knows his stuff. He taught the first half of this class then it goes to prof Kahn (not as good). You have to go to his lectures if you don't want to read the textbook. Everything is graded by the TF. Only two tests and two papers all class (extra credit available). Study the lectures!
Took Intro to Art History with professor Kleiner, he's not the most engaging speaker but the material is really interesting. You don't really need to read the textbook if you go to all the lectures and discussions and take notes. Really nice guy and good class overall.
Professor Kleiner truly cared about all his students and goes out of his way to make connections with them. He learns everyones names within the first few weeks. True, his exams are tricky because of the pure amount of content, but he teaches all the essentials in class. Go to class!!
Kleiner is smart and nice. He makes me fall asleep in class, but the course wasn't that hard. He sends you pdfs to read, and as long as you look them over, you're good. Class was small and basically a long lecture with occasional participation. We wrote 3 essays. He's kind of stuck up, and values his book above any research I did. Overall, fine.
This man is an absolute gem. The lectures themselves were a little dry/ he was sometimes hard to understand. That being said, he was always trying to get student to participate and make the lectures more interesting. Be sure to do the readings if you want to pass the midterm.
Everything he says during the lecture may be in the exam, so go to the lectures. You don't need to buy the MindTap or the textbook, the slideshow will be posted onto Blackboard (IMO). He is pretty old, so you might not be able to hear him if you sit in the back. He gives extra credit if you answer his questions during lecture so watch out for that.
Professor Kleiner is very passionate about art history and I definitely learned a lot from the class. I took this class for hub credits and found it to be manageable. There were only 3 total grades and the exams were non-cumulative. The class was pure memorization. Extra credit is given during lectures and if you study you should do well.
Professor Kleiner is one of the best professors I've met at BU.
Kleiner is a great professor who always makes lectures entertaining and gives out many opportunities for extra credit. He definitely knows his material and is helpful when it comes to studying for the exam.
