He is rude and arrogant. A know-it-all yet he doesn't help students.
Some first year students are the rude ones. They don't appreciate quality instruction and don't like the work expected.
where do i start??!! Rude, arrogant, boring, unhelpful, unclear...and the list goes on...i LOOOOVE Mcmaster but he's the only prof whose class i loathed!!
Excellent prof. Tough though. Gives no credit for assignments that are only a little late. Great web site.
Hoppe rocks
Looks like Mario, but a very boring prof to listen to. Tests are moderately difficult but can be tricky if you do not know the concepts well. Though he is fair in weighting of marks and will adjust your final grade from two or three options.
He is the best prof I have had at Mac. I loved his probability examples
Professor is interested in the subject and tries to make the material relevant. Goes very fast, that's my only complaint, but there is a lot of material to cover. Web site is very useful. I liked the practice tests and exams.
He sometimes is a bit unapproachable for questions, but overall teaches a good class and makes a fair exam...if you are in his class next semester you should be really happy

I didn't ever want to take another stats class for fear i might get Dr. Hoppe again. I went to speak to him during his office hours and he was rude and mean. You need to work on your people skills.
I had him last year, and he was amazing. Everybody should stop cutting him up, because Dr.Hoppe is the man
good prof
He gave the best of four wasy to calculate the final mark and raised the final exam. One of my only profs to tell noisy students to be quiet.
In one class some kid answered a question, and he let the kid take his mike and teach the class from the front...even better was when Dr. Hoppe sat in the kid's seat while this was goin on

Sleep inducing class. Seems like a nice enough man. Class in general is terrible. I've never seen attendance drop so fast in my entire life.
All the material is online which is great if you don't feel like going to class. Prof is witty at times and is fair with marks and exams. Answers questions on WebCT too.
He let us drop a midterm if the exam mark was better...I went up like 20% because of that!!! :-)

never really understood him or what he was trying to teach. like the fact that if your exam mark is better than a midterm, the midterm doesn't count and the exam is worth more. i hate stats.
I still don't understand the purpose of the course. Hoppes seemed like a nice guy, based on the 10 lectures I attended. I learned one thing: you can waste a lot of paper printing his lecture notes, and end up MORE confused than when you started.
Graphs and graphs and sometimes explanations. Understood nothing. Grade went up 20% when I stopped going to class and learned from book only. Is a prof for research, not for teaching.
cant understand what this man is trying to say. can ace class by not going to class and doing his online examples and old online exams. same exact ones are on midterm and final.
Nice guy, but incredibly boring. I went to class to sleep. The first 2 tests were easy as pie, the exam was a lot harder than expected. GL.
Hoppe is an okay proff, even though his lectures can get increadible boring. However it is his personality that discusts me. Trys to be friendly but in person he is a complete jerk. I have absolutly no respect for the man. but go figure he is a statistion and not a real mathmatition anyways.

It's a good course, but I don't understand the need for excel assignments (and they are only worth 10 percent) yet so much work!! Course would be a lot more enjoyable without the boring labs!
The labs take too long to do. Lectures are fun though. He interacts with the class.

Hoppe is a pretty cool prof, tries to make it interesting, its not his fault he likes statistics...but dude this guy gets paid maddd money!
I cant blame him for how dull stats is! He tris very hard to make you interested in statistics! Although reading the book helps just as much as attending the lectures.
One of the most helpful profs ever
Such a great teacher and a great person. He is more forgiving and caring than most profs at McMaster. Understands life's pressures, treats students well. Let us drop our lowest midterm. Exams are not easy but fair. Lots to study in the course though. He's a very good man.
bad prof all around. doesnt answer emails promptly. doesnt even send an email to say that he got your email. so rude. thinks hes a good prof which makes him an extra bad prof.
Amazing prof!!! He gave everyone 3 free marks on the second test. Has lot of concern for students. I've never seen such a generous prof before. Will do everything he can to help you. EXTREMELY Helpful on the webct discussion forums.
Dr. Hoppe is hands down the best prof I have had in first year. He has a heart made of gold. He is kind, caring, fair, and genuinely cares about his students. I hope to have him for some more courses in upper years. Thumbs up for this guy.
stutters and takes too long to explain a simple concept. Just stands up there and scribbles on overhead sheets. pre-printed notes are unclear and he doenst explain the things you need to know. Tests were hard but final exam was easy. I stopped going to his class after a few weeks and still managed to do well
Dr. Hoppe is fair and excellent kindly professor. This is not course for sissies because he covers lot of material but puts notes online and gives practice tests. Just do problems and you'll get A because tests and exam are fair and based on the lectures. He uses good examples from newspapers. He knows stats.

I agree. The course was easy even with a lot of work but the tests and exams were fair and just like the practice ones. I got an A+ and would take a course again with Dr. Hoppe.
Fairly clear and very engaging. He honestly cares about his students and is very fair about grades and scheduling. Stats would have bored me to death without him!
A really great professor. DO NOT TAKE 4E03 BEFORE 3U03 or 4D03. 4E03 is MUCH harder than 2D03. He is a fair professor. Just come to class and do the work. Tests are based on homework questions.

Damn, he was an alright prof. Considering a lot of the inclass notes were not based on his tests. Everything was good until the exam... It consisted of stats questions from other courses (being sarcastic, but thats what it seemed like). SO many people did bad on that exam..... And its not like he bell curved at the end

Dr.Hoppe is a bit tough, but he is a very fair professor. Dont get freaked out if you find out you don't know how to do the first couple Assignments in the course. He really cares about his students and their grades and will do everything he can to make sure people who are trying their best get good grades. He has good intentions for his class.

Worst Prof Ever. His lectures are soooooooo booorrrinng and he gives impossibly hard assignments that will surely make your head hurt. I dont recommend this prof or his courses to anyone.
He was so terrible for that course when I had him about 4 years ago. Just couldn't stand him. Most boring prof ever. And to make worse, his tests were hard too!!
He's fair and accommodating. Explains concepts well. Not really a hard course if you do the work.
I had him for brownian motion and found him to be extremely boring. His lectures will put you to sleep. His Assignments were so tough!!!
First of all, he is the worst stats prof ever due to his incredibly dull and boring lectures. Secondly he is really tough. He told in class that exams are not supposed to be a war between students and profs, but he lied. He gave a really hard final because the class average was very high in the term and he wanted to lower it. Terrible prof. Avoid!!

I had this professor for Stats 4E03 last year and his take home final was the hardest thing you can imagine. He really does not want to see students do well, that's why he messes them up in the end. Avoid this prof. His voice will put you to sleep and he uses overheads way too much, which nobody likes really. Very boring and tough instructor. BAD!!
Prepared me well for grad courses. Tough course but fair marking and Dr. Hoppe is great in office hours.
He was terrible when I took his course in Winter 2005. He took forever to answer emails and sometimes he simply would not bother replying. He is rude arrogant and tries to be nice in front of the class. He is overall terrible. You should take a course taught by him if you want to be turned off the subject material for good. Thumbs down for Hoppe.
Boring Beyond Words
He is the most unfair and unreasonable prof I have ever had. Stay away from him if you are a grad student.
After the first lecture itself I realized he was going to be a terrible prof.
This prof is really really stale. His lectures should be flushed. They are so stinky!!!
He was really the worst professor you can possibly imagine. His take home final was impossible and very hard. He acts very cool but he is veryyyy uncool. He doesnot like giving good marks to students.

Very unfair professor. His exams consist mostly of questions you have never seen before. Way harder then the Assignment problems. I suggest that he start giving more fair exams.
Toughest Statistics Professor in the History of Mankind. His Assignments were a nightmare and impossible to solve on your own and his final was more challenging then expected.
Even though I got an A- in this course, I think I deserved an A+. His exam was unfair and brought my mark down. I wish he had dropped our lowest Assignment, which he did not considering the one on Martingale's was so unfair.
One out of 5 is too much for this professor. He is the most unhelpful person in the whole world.
Best STats professor on campus. If you want to be challenged and want to learn how to think deeply on Assignments, I suggest you take Dr. Hoppe's classes.
I don't attend his class anymore because he reads off his slides, and his slides are horrible. Have the material isn't on them and when he solves problems he skips many steps. Please explain

No real office hours. Graded the hard exam VERY LATE. You could tell he was a research prof and has low priority on teaching. I guess the only upside was that he's nice.
This is class was very similar to stats 2D03; he attempted to be interactive by bringing in dice, cards and paddle boards but at times the material was very repetitive and he wasn't very good at managing his time for the class to cover everything
Funny guy, loved his lectures because he was very insightful. The key to doing well in this course is doing all the homework problems since they'll be a subset of the tests & exam, but you should really know your concepts well. Go to his office hours, he'll enthusiastically answer your questions and make sure you understand. 10/10 would take again.
Bird course. Not offered every year since Hoppe's the only one who teaches it. Assignments: 70% (14% x 5), but with friends, you should be able to get 100% every time. He reuses old assignment questions. Exam was similar to the assignment but is tricky, uses the same concepts, only 30%. His lectures are interesting but people don't show up.
In regards to Dr. Hoppes knowledge of the course, he is outstanding. However, he writes on the chalkboard in lectures, messy writing, and no content was posted anywhere on Avenue or Aaron childs' website. Basically, read the textbook for this entire course and had to teach myself everything. Assignments, 2 midterms 1 test. I recommend another prof.
He has very confusing lectures and is not good at explaining. Only 10 people show up to his lectures. He does not know how to connect his laptop to the projector.
Amazing professor, incredibly engaging lectures. Through out the year the lecture hall was full, speaking to how well he is at his job. Material covered is extremely relevant to what will be asked of you on tests. Very easy class as long as you give a sliver of effort.
