If you want a booger bear, this is the guy. Anal, uncompromising, and at times terse, but definitely fair. His tests could be harder. All things considered, he is an excellent professor.

Very intellegent man- His class in the summer is only for the brave and dedicated- Organic chemistry is a hard subject- but he teaches it well- the harder you work the better your grade- Can not give a positive enough rating- he's a 10
Knows his subject very well. However, is not able to transfer that knowledge. He is a great chemist and a lousy teacher.
Make no mistake. This man can teach the heck out of organic chemistry. He is anal, angry at times, and strikes fear in the hearts of his students. But when and if you finish the course, you will be proud

A thorough teacher.
He is very helpful.
Never worked so hard for a C being an A/B student. He's bipolar so beware the ever changing personalities of Fred J. You MUST find old tests to study by and you MUST draw your arrows correctly. Survive this and no class will ever seem hard again. You will learn. Do not shy away from his class. Its almost like being hazed into the science world.

The most anal professor you will ever meet. Knows his stuff, though and does a good job of teaching it. Don't expect anything easy, don't expect to ever get out of class early, if yo aure taking it over the summer, don't expect your breaks to be very long. Also, always kinda bugged me that he wouldn't answer any questions during break time, said he needed a break from us, too... I guess that's cool though. Labs always take forever. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, you'll wish you had!
Admits to being extremely anal. Which I thank him for. Learned so much from this man and loved both semesters. His class will challenge you but its well worth it! Recommend finding a prior student to help with NMR - the first one is very challenging. Use extra credit to your advantage and keep up spectral data problems in the text - you could see it on the lab final (that was the only question on the final in my class!).
This class is really time consuming. He is the most anal man in the world. You must do everything his way. You will learn soooo much in his class though. If you take this class nothing will seem hard again. IF you survive.
this is the hardest class in the world
If you want to learn Organic Chemistry this is the class to take, if your GPA is more important, transfer schools. Learn to draw, write, spell, use punctuation and don't forge to UNDERLINE!!!!!!!
don't take his class!!! that is all i can say.
Very Very good professor!! Best I have ever had. Learned so much under him. Probably the hardest professor in the state though.
This man is HARD. He is a perfectionist and expects you to be the same. But, when you get out you will know organic chemistry. This class is like hazing in the science world. Take it. Survive it. And be proud of your accomplishment.
TAKE THIS CLASS SOMEWHERE ELSE. STRAIGHT AND SIMPLE.
Best Professor I've ever had! He will make you work to get a good grade, but you learn the material!
Best Professor I've ever had! He will make you work to get a good grade, but you learn the material!
Bi polar. If he likes you you're gonna do ok. If he doesn't, well good luck. No one will ever say Organic is an easy subject but to this man there is organic chem and then nothing else. He expects it his way, the book is of course wrong on almost everything and oh yea partial credit doesn't exist. Its either his way or wrong, plain and simple.
Horrible professor, doesn't know the meaning of teaching. Its about Dr. Matthews not Organic Chemistry. Spiteful, hateful old man!!! He needs to give it up for an office job!
Fred's the prof you want if you really want to KNOW organic chem. He has high expectations, unlike way too many profs at APSU. He treats you like an adult, and expects you to act like one. If you want to be treated like a high schooler, then don't take his class.
Really knows his stuff, very high expectations, but you will leave knowing organic chemistry
ostentatious and uncaring
Professor does not allow you to ask questions, is rude to students, tests on material not covered in class, will not round up, is late to class (he was 15 mins late to our final exam).
Teaches with the expectation that students are there to learn, not just get a grade. Exam was from book and classroom lectures. If it wasn't covered in class, it was in the book. If you don't know both, then it's the student's loss. Professors can't cover everything in the book during the limited class time.
He was a difficult teacher with a difficult class. I would not take him if I had a choice. He was fair though.
had him in summer, everyone said i had matthews light. really smart guy, lectures very well. seems nicer to the students he likes or the ones he knows are working hard. however i never saw him be rude to anyone. most ppl here hate him, but they are the ones that find out med school isnt for them. if i made an A, you can
So many words come to mind with good ole' Freddy-all of which I would get in trouble for putting on here. Let's just say I was one of the 2 people even close to getting an A in this class-and he purposefully made the last test impossible just so people would fail! If you can avoid this man-do so at ALL costs!
this was the first B ive made since middle school. i feel sorry for who ever is reading this because there is hardly any way around this guy. if you want to do good, get on his good side, do the E.C. in the first semester, and study the notes you take the day you take them!(and the book).
worthless waste of time
He make the class much harder than it needs to be. Organic Chemistry can easily be learned in a much simpler way.
Organic Chemistry is hard. Everyone thinks Dr. Matthews is the anti-christ, but he comes nowhere close. The subject is hard, and he teaches it to prepare you for the future. Obtaining a Chemistry major is not a piece of cake, and if it were, everyone would have one. Don't take this class if you are not prepared to study every day for hours a day!
run for your grade his is extremly hard, you need to sleep and breath organic other wise u wont pass. he make organic harder than it need to be. not very helpful in office hours help and rude. i had to drop him after the second test
Be prepared to take lots of notes! He will not slow down or repeat himself. I did fine on the first test, but after that it was all down hill!! He did not follow his own notes when giving test. He seems not to like non-chemistry majors (i.e. Nursing, Med Tech. He never answers his emails or voice mail. Good luck!! You will need it!
If you attend class, take good notes, read the book, and STUDY, you will do fine. I had no problems with Matthews. He usually answered my email questions within a couple of hours. A bit chatty the couple of times I stopped by his office. He is very knowledgeable about Organic Chem, and assumes you are in his class to learn, not just pass.
Organic is a hard class. Dr. Matthews may make it even harder. One thing is for sure...you will learn this subject after taking it with him. He expects a lot and you have to take good notes and STUDY all the time to do well. He does offer extra credit the first semester...DO IT...ALL OF IT! If you don't, you will regret it.
Regardless of what you hear about Dr. Matthews, he is a pretty nice, whitty guy. He IS tough as a professor, but let's face it...Organic is a hard course! He doesn't make it any easier, but if you take good notes, read the text, STUDY A LOT, and do the extra credit (AND DO IT, it's worth it!), you should be fine.
very hard class and very tough teacher, he makes the tests more difficult than necessary, wish he offered extra credit for second semester!
He's arrogant, obtuse, pedantic, unpleasant and to make matters worse he has really bad breath. Worst prof i have ever had.
Yes the subject is hard, yes, Dr. M. is a hard teacher. No, he is not fair. He says he is fair, but he gives people higher grades if they go to his church, are all american, or wear knit caps. He doesn't grade his tests with a key, but instead by what he thinks you deserve. APSU finally has a new organic prof...take his class if you can.
Total chowderhead. He gets his jollies by annoying students. He's without a shadow of a doubt the worst prof ever.
He is nice.
Very tough class but I learned sooo much! If you don't have the time to invest into this class don't take it...you'll will NOT succeed.
I had Dr. Matthews for both Organic 1 and 2. I really enjoyed the lectures that this man taught. I know that when you walk out of those doors, you know your material in Organic if you pay attention. If you SERIOUSLY think that a junior chemistry class is going to be easy, then you have another thing coming to you and should change your major...
Yes, ALL the stories are true. Take Shelton.
I absolutely love Dr. Matthews! Yes, his class is tough but it is Organic! You can't expect it to be easy. He really works with you if you need additional help. He can be strict and likes things a certain way, but you actually learn organic in his class! I love his lecture style and definitely recommend him for this class!!
He is the best professor I have EVER had. Yes, he is picky and knows EXACTLY how he wants things to be done, but he isn't out to get you. He explains things extremely well, which makes OChem so much easier. Amazingly helpful and a true teacher, he wants you to learn and helps however he can. Just because he makes you work doesn't mean he is hard.
I absolutely adore Dr. Matthews. He is very particular and wants things exactly his way, but if you study and attend class, you should do fine. He is very passionate about what he does and explains everything very well. It was easy to understand. Be sure to allot enough time to study for his exams though.
horrible
had Dr. Matthews for both summer sessions. The harsh comments are unwarranted. Dr. Matthews is a wonderful professor! It's simple: if you are not willing to work extremely hard for your grade, don't take him. He expects a lot and if you follow his advice and STUDY you will succeed. If you're not willing to do this, you're not making it in med school
Dr. Matthews is a crazy nice guy, but you will hate him after a few days in class. He is very very picky and will take off points for the smallest things. Very hard class. I would take this at another university if you could... It is possible to do well in the class if you do absolutely nothing and I mean nothing but organic chemistry.
Dr. Matthews is the hardest professor I have ever taken. He is extremely tough. Organic two is a hard class in general but he does not make it any easier. He expects a lot out of you. He expects you to know absolutely everything for a test and that is exactly what he will tell you. I would not recommend taking him but if you have to devote all time
Dr. Matthews is no doubt a tough professor, don't take him if you want an easy A. However, is you are there to learn there is no better professor at APSU. He is great at teaching the material, he had a real mastery in the classroom, albeit in a really old-school kind of way. Would take again, and a respected professor for professional references.
Dr. Matthews loves to talk, and not necessarily about the things we need to learn. His test are ridiculously hard, and he won't give partial credit. He only wants his definition, and nothing else. If you have any other option, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Do you just want an A or do you want to know the material? He is not an easy A professor. He is a 'prepare-you-for-any-test-that-requires-Organic-Chemistry' professor. This professor will teach you, if you let him. He is picky, and can be a bit cryptic in his feedback. However, he is passionate and, if asked, would recommend no other professor.
Dr. Matthews teaching style is pretty consistent, so if you adjusted to him in 3510, you can hit the ground running in 3520. Material learned in 3510 is relevant in 3520. So if you took him in 3510, just review the material. If not, it may take some time to adjust. Again, he will teach you and his tests make you think. Do not take this lightly.
Dr. Matthews makes you work for your grade. His lectures are long, and his tests are extremely difficult. If you can avoid having to take him- take someone else.
Dr. Matthews is picky about his organic class. If you don't write it on the test exactly like he said, it's all wrong. NMR is the most important thing to him and he will spend a lot of his 3520 class talking about it, even though only a few questions will be on the final. Don't talk about other organic professors, he doesn't think their competent.
He does not prepare you adequately for anything beyond the NMR device. As far as MCAT goes, take organic 2 somewhere besides APSU to score well and be prepared for Biochemistry. He does not teach enough of the subject, is narrow in the material, and focuses on unimportant aspects of the class. Also, grading is despicably inconsistent.
The highly favorable remarks provided by others could not have been submitted by anyone who actually attended his classes.
Honestly, Dr. Matthews doesn't care if you truly learn organic chemistry, he cares if you learn organic chemistry *his* way. He is an extremely tough grader and doesn't like to give extra credit. His tests really require straight memorization. If you aren't doing well, he is quick to tell you that you won't make it in further education.
Dr Matthews is honestly the most frustrating teacher I've ever had. Hard tests. No extra credit. Horrible grader. Wants you to memorize "his way" instead of actually learning anything.
Dr. Matthews is one of the hardest professors I have ever taken. This being said, he is also one of the best professors I have ever taken. If you want to know organic chemistry like you know your own name, take this class with Dr. Matthews. If you listen to what he advises you to do to make good grades, it is not impossible to do well.
Straightforward, easily the toughest grader I've ever been taught by. Do not skip class, do not procrastinate, memorize everything word for word, do all extra credit you can and prepare for exams. I just barely passed, and I would still say that Dr. Matthews is a great professor. You will not pass if you don't work HARD.
If you are looking to actually learn anything he probably is not the professor for you. He focuses more on memorizing HIS way. He does not teach updated information so if you plan on furthering your organic chemistry education I would not suggest him. Nickles and dimes your test score.
This man is the best professor I've ever had. People will try to scare you about him, but he is the MOST caring teacher at apsu. He wants you to actually learn the info and is always willing to explain in further detail outside of class. He is the toughest grader I've had too, but he gives you ALL the info. You have to memorize it, word for word.
Dr. Matthews is not an easy teacher, but Organic Chemistry Two isnt the easiest class. His lectures are extremely in depth, and he can sometimes over explain things. He truly loves to teach, and loves when students participate and show effort. You will have to work hard for your grade, and the tests can be difficult. Ask lots of questions.
I was really worried about taking Dr. Matthews for Organic 2 Lab, because I base a lot from this website, and things that were said, were not good. Now, after taking him, I believe it was the best decision I could have possibly made. He is the BEST! I have never understood chemistry so well until him. He is very picky, whatever he says, just do it.
Has youtube lectures very good information but you won't be able to learn anything because you'll be too busy trying to remember everything for the HAND WRITIN TESTS. Lots of information you have to memorize for a 12-15 question test. NO STUDY GUIDE. 4 EXAMS that's it.
I am begging you to NOT take him for the sake of your career, grade, learning, and mental health wise. He expects you to memorize HIS notes verbatim to pass a test. There were only 4 tests and no other grades. When asked for clarification, "I could but I'm not going to." Passive-aggressive. MINIMAL effort on his side. (A-student btw).
One of my favorite professors. Yes, this course is difficult, not because of Dr. Matthews, but OChem is hard for most students. Due to the pandemic, Dr. Matthews has worked extra hard; he puts more effort into his classes than most students are willing to give back. If I had the chance, I would absolutely take him again. I admire his enthusiasm.
Hes crazy. Not a great teacher, just a megalomaniac. Obsessed with NMR to the point youll spend over 48hrs outside of class over two weeks for a 1credit lab class. Hell give you details on how to do it yet still wont give you all of what hes grading on until hes already marked you off for it. Idk who writes these glowing reviews
You will do well in Dr. Matthews' class, as long as you're willing to memorize his definitions, show enthusiasm, study the material, and put in the work for extra credit. His exams are really not difficult; he gives partial credit, and he's very clear about what will be on his tests. He also usually includes extra credit opportunities on the exams.
His teaching style is very heavy on memorization. If you excel at memorization or have an analytical mind, I would highly recommend him. As long as you do what he asks, and memorize what he asks you to or lectures over, you will make an A. He explains every detail of any concept and is very clear on his expectations.
For Orgochem lab it was not awful but def not my favorite. It's his way or the highway with everything. He explains things in a way that make you feel stupid but does not specify everything he wants for lab. On the bright side, he does not require a lab report but does have prelab quizzes based on the textbook. Others in lab dreads his class too.
Awful
Very particular, very strict. Must be his way or the highway. Beware the pre-lab quizzes, read the textbook. Don't be even 30 seconds late or he won't let you into class. Tall socks or he won't let you into class. He checks them. On the plus side, no lab reports
You will not know the criteria by which your assignments will be graded or discarded entirely. This man is - somehow - the head of the chemistry department at APSU, and has made statements in defiance of understanding basic chemistry such as "farts don't smell bad, they are just overpowering" and "higher octane gasoline burns cleaner". Avoid.
Worst teacher I've had at APSU. If you have a disability, be prepared to ADVOCATE FOR YOUR RIGHTS, as he often denies approved accommodations. He grades very strictly, focusing on minor details, and requires assignments to be formatted exactly to his specifications. You also have to see others' grades to see your own. There are no lab reports.
I loved Dr. Matthews. His teaching methods are constructed to make sure you actually understand ochem. If you are not a chemistry major I can understand why you would struggle/hate his class. But as a chemistry major he was super helpful to me and I can leave his class with confidence knowing I fully understand the material.
The following is a DIRECT QUOTE from Dr. Fred Matthews, "If you have kids or a real job or other classes, you need to accept you will not have time for this class and your grade will now be as high as it could be. You should be spending between 6-12 hours a day on this class every day if you want to pass."
I hope you don't need accommodations, because he will do everything legal to prevent use form being able to use them. He single handedly got me kicked out of my program by keeping me from doing work for my other classes in a futile attempt to pass his class. If there is ANY other option, take it. If there IS NO other option, Find an online course.
He took every ounce of love I had for chemistry. If you AREN'T a chem major, don't take him at all costs. Fine another option or something. He's tenured, so he can basically do and say whatever he wants and nothing is done. It is like he WANTS US TO FAIL. My mental health and self confidence has never been lower than whenI was in his class.
Dr. Matthews has gone to say multiple times that if you cannot dedicate all of your time to O Chem, you will not do well. Be prepared to memorize information rather than learn how to think logically with problems on exams. Tests are completely free response, and he is not generous on how he grades, be prepared to write down everything word for word
If you want to give up in your chosen career path due to a required class this one is for you! Get ready to be expected to be an expert in OChem. The lab is just as insane with more work due in there for 1 credit than a normal 3 credit class. Most nit picky narcissist who can never be wrong. Avoid at all cost if this class is just a requirement!!!
Very rude and inconsiderate
