He is a very hard but helpful instructor. he explains things thoroughly and asks if you understand or if hes going to fast before he moves on. very good instructor and interesting. talks alot about the studies hes doing.
HE IS A VERY INTERESTING TEACHER, HE IS VERY SMART,HELPFUL AND CLEAR. HE MAKES THIS CLASS FUN!
Can be very confusing, and extremely boring. Don't recommend this class at all. He's very space headed, and is all over the board. Half the time he doesn't even talk about what we're supposed to be going over.
I don't know what planet those who reccommend Mr.Miller are in, but its not earth. He is scattered, confusing, and inconsistant. An A is doable if you want to read and memorize every word of the text and do some extra credit. But you will be a stress case the whole term!! Better to avoid him then risk his inconsistancy.
DON'T take this teacher!!!

Some people like this guy and some people don't. He is average in every sence of the word. I think he would be a good/better teacher if he wasn't doing so much stuff out side of the class room. I think he was stressed out most of the time which made him a little punchy throughout most of the class period. Not a bad teacher, just a little too full of him self!
This teacher doesn't care about his students. I set up a meeting with him and waited at his office for a half hour, staring at his empty desk. When I went to class and told him I waited for him, he said I didn't show up and he was there the entire time. It's impossible to get a good grade in his class and he looks like a cheerleader, bouncing around and he's so excited. I want to know what he's been taking. Can I have some?
Mr. Miller is an average teacher.
Fred Miller is, as far as I can tell, a good person. As a teacher he's a complete failure. Often his lectures seemed fabricated and would contradict the text we were using. His tests were, for lack of a better term, insane. I don't think it's hard to get a good grade with Mr. Miller, but it's almost impossible to learn anything from him.
He's just ok.His tests were not always consistant with his lectures, and he's a bit scattered. He was a bit on edge at times and would snap at some of the students, has no patience.I expected more from the class. He expected us to be excited about psychology, but didn't make it exciting.I didn't get a fair grade on my paper and got a B in the class.
This class was horrible. The tests were not alway's matched with the material in the lectures, and the instructor was grumpy and did no appreciate most questions. Don't think he liked his job very much.
Loved this class! I live a block for Sylvania and was willing to drive to Cascade every week for his class and would do it again. Lecture and weekly test style; term paper or community service project for final.
Fred, to my disappointment, in no way helped me get through this term. He belittled me in front of the class for not having my pencil sharpened for a test. He also was so condescending that several classmates, including my husband, took up for me. He was too fast, and arrogant. I highly DO NOT recommend this instructor!
Give me a break! For those of you who liked and recommended Miller as a teacher we couldn't have been in the same class. He was rude, belittling and very intimidating. Perhaps if he spent less time talking (and spending time at) OHSU he would be able to teach better. Why does he shuffle with those stupid overhead transparencies so much? TERRIBLE
Expects a lot, aqnd makes you work! But for those who either only want easy classes with no work, or want the teacher to coddle you i wouldn't take his class. But for those who want a challenge and feel that college isn't suppose to be easy, then take this class and learn something!!
The impression I got from Miller was that he thought very highly of himself, and a heck of a lot less of others, big I little you. I rate him at the bottom of the bucket for teachers. It would take a herculean effort to stomach him and the class work. Call em as I see em.
there isn't really enough space here to describe how bad this instructor's class is, and he is even worse! if you like to have your opinions, not your facts, corrected whenever he asks the eternal "so, what do you think?" or if you enjoy being belittled for asking questions when he invites you to do so, be my guest. otherwise, take it elsewhere!
Man, I've never been so frustrated in a class. The tests had nothing to do with the text, not to mention he was condescending, very scattered and rarely prepared for class. He has way too much on his plate. I think most people have touched on anything else I could possibly say. NOT RECOMMENDED!
Bad, bad, bad. I managed an A in this class, but only because I did every available bit of extra credit and lived in a constant state of stress. The lectures have no relation to the test material. Brusque and openly despises students. Ignorant, too - he marked down my term paper because "the Lancet isn't a peer-reviewed source." Um, what?
ok. um...the worst teacher i have ever encountered. Demeaning, confusing, belittling...he looks for people to share there opinions and as soon as they do...eats them like flys. Syllabus was unclear..requires big term paper or 20hrs community service.
Not fair to say much, because I dropped this class as I feel he had a racial agenda. If I want to learn about civil rights, I'll take Social Studies. He tried in a lame way to associate some racial events with psychology. Some advice, Mr Miller? Save it. We're paying to learn psychology. Teach Social Studies or leave your personal issues at home.
Mr. Miller was definitely a difficult teacher, but the information presented was quite useful, engaging and pretty fun. Not a professor I would recommend if you plan to "breeze through" class. His lessons are very high quality and you will retain the information - if you're capable, that is. Take NOTES because it will be on the test.
If you have him as a teacher, get out as soon as you can. He is the most ignorant instructor I have ever met. Oh yeah and don't ask questions in his class because he will make dirty looks like you are wasting his time. I guess he doesn't think we pay for his lecture!
I took the entire 200 level sequence from Mr. Miller and really enjoyed it! The tests were very hard, but I'm pretty sure that this prepared me to go into 3rd year psych at U of O. The community service projects were great learning experiences!! He's great and I would suggest him to any Psych major.
Very excited and energetic about his work.
Like many of the ratings already mentioned, (wish I knew about this site before registration) DROP HIM ASAP!! His lectures are scattered and hard to follow. His test questions are all over the place, not related to the reading and confusing. If you ask a question be prepared for him to FREAK OUT!
Never lkied Psychology before! After I took his class, found the subject interesting! Very funny & likable instructor! Highly recommend!
I took Mr.Millers class Spring07 Intro to Personality. His lectures were a bit confusing, but if u paid attention and reread slides & read the book, then you could eaisly pass. The worst part of the class was the huge paper at the end, having to do with Journal Writings about each approach. But that actually raised my grade.Good teacher take class
Miller is not one of my favorite teachers. I found the tests to be easy and the workload to be light. Just reading for tests and about 3 assignments. I wasn't fond of the way he responded to questions, he often seemed out of touch with what students were trying to express. I love psychology, but I wouldn't recommend him.
His lectures go very fast. He doesn't like questions and rarely answers them. He enjoys belittling students in front of the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Overall a great teacher....ONLY for those who want to work hard. I busted my butt in this class and it payed off. He doesn't waste time on questions unless you really engage him and that may be difficult to deal with for the more timid students. Lectures do go fast, BUT all the material can be found in the book or handouts. I recomend.
I liked him though I have to agree that he does not repond to questions well. He tries to fly past the question with jarble and you never really get an answer. Also he will talk about you if you are late or if you speak up in his class and then are no there one day he will make a comment about it being quiet. I do like him, just don't expect to much
He is interesting to listen to and had some interesting extras, but is the worst teacher I've had. It's important to him that you listen to him, but not learn. I emailed him and after he said I didn't, I brought a copy in. He still said I didn't. I completely stopped doing the work and he still gave me a C. He is obviously ****, really offensive!
This teacher refers to people of mixed race as Oreos, he asserts unless you are 100% african american, you can NEVER understand African American people. When complemented he believes you're refering to his ethnicity. When other students asked questions he FREAKED OUT. I can't believe he's still allowed to teach!! I didn't get a bad grade.
I took Psychology 201A, 202A, and Intro to Personality with the Prof. Enjoyed him immensely. If you don't have an open mind-don't have him-his humour is different, but not unkind. He can be arrogant but that is part of his charm. Not for students of the the more Visual Learning. He grades very hard...but, I got 1 B and 2 A's with him. I wish I cou
Fred kept my attention for a solid 4 hours 1x week. Time flew by. Material very interesting and he gets excited about it. Key to getting his personality is the ability to laugh at yourself. We have a good rapport & I look forward to being in his 202A next term. His tests are all multiple choice & tricky cuz that's my weakest format.
I took Fred for PSY 201A & 202A. I think he's great. The class was 4 hours long but flew by. I learned sooo much. I'll really miss his class.
Mr. Miller is a fair grader. You get what you earn. I will miss Fred's class and his sense of humor.
I HEART FRED. He pushes you to explore new ideas. He helps you feel comfortable with journals so you do not use websites when writing papers. He is fair, funny, and charming. I will miss him.
Very critical of students for not already knowing what he's supposed to be teaching.
Mr. Miller is a very intelligent man, but I think he sometimes forgets he is talking to BEGINNING psych students, not advanced...not his colleagues. I appreciated the work assigned, and his stringent attitude that it be done right!
Saw a lot of bad reviews here, wanted to keep an open mind. 3 weeks into the class and I wish I could drop. I'm learning nothing from class, everything I'm learning is from the book or my Master in Psy. friend. Half the test was irrelevant. I'm a 4.0 student and I don't know if that'll be true after this class.
Tough class. Requirements confusing sometimes. He gets annoyed easily, but who could blame him especially with the one idiot woman who thought ocd had to do with strep infections in a 200 level psychology class. too bad there's not a rate my classmates site.
Didn't do real well in the class, which was my own issue. But I thought Mr. Miller was an alright guy and ok teacher by the end of the class. He seems to be either a love him or hate him kinda professors, but I think he means well.
Pretty awful. He didn't understand what a correlation was (pos or neg): one thing goes up, the other goes up or down; simple psych; I tried drawing it on my hand--to no avail. Also says "libary" and has made up his own word--tragesty (like tragedy and travesty?). I actually kind of like that part, but his classes are a tragesty.
Eh, he's a nice enough guy, it just seems like he's lost his joy for teaching and really didn't seem to have a deep knowledge of his subject. Dry and tedious lectures.
Miller is known for not replying to email, and not being available or showing up for meetings. The reason this is important- he tends to give very confusing instructions while being very picky with results. He should care more about providing clarification if he truly wants his students to succeed. His arrogence is just annoying.
sometimes you take a class and wonder why this person is still teaching. I don't know if Fred was an inspiring, enthusiastic or personable teacher capable of listening to anyone other then himself at any point in his career. I DO know that he is not now. Please save yourself the money and the time. don't take this class. seriously.
Fred isn't a bad teacher at all. I . My only problem is he didn't hand the previous assignments back in a timely manner so you wouldn't be able to know what or if you're doing anything wrong. I was marked down because of structural problems with the essays and was marked down on every single one for the same exact reasons.
I had extremely high hopes after the first class. Miller seemed very fired up and an involved teacher. The next class he skipod through all the powerpoints and didn't lecture hardly at all. He gave practice tests, which helped, but there was so much material you had to guess what he'd really ask. I'd never seen students hate a teacher much.
DISORGANIZED! His office is trashed, he doesn't return things promptly, he picks favorites and I sometimes felt it was racially driven. He is condescending and arrogant. If you shmooz him, you'll do better, but that sucks. I got an A, but there is TONS of material for this basic, easy class so it takes lots of time. Only take him as a last option.
Compared to other instructors I've had at PCC for Psy classes. Fred is not up to par. He's not helpful, very arrogant and doesn't seem to care about a student's success. I felt like he was condescending. He may be smart, but he's not teacher material. Only take him if you have to.
Very tough teacher! He's not very approachable, hard to talk to and gets very arrogant with students. He gets annoyed when students ask questions and doesn't seem very happy to be there.
This has to be one of the most condescending, arrogant, rude teachers I have ever encountered. For starters he will poke fun if you are late or begin to question him. He believes he is the all knower of psychology. His structure is laughable. When turning in an assignment once, he grabbed the paper, looked at it and laughed directly to me.
Not very approachable, seemed arrogant.
Great professor, very clear and straight-forward, if you read the chapters and do the work you should be fine.
I enjoyed this class and Mr.Miller. I thought he was extremely patient when asked questions and helpful during an office visit. If you read the text, which is well written, you will do fine in this class. He allows assignments to be redone if you get a bad grade, or turned in late. This guy loves teaching and his students.
The class was interesting but the tests were hard and confusing. There was not enough clarity on what he wanted in the papers. He is very picky and not clear, which made his grading very poor. I have gotten A's in other psychology classes but not in his class. I would not take him again and not recommend him.
I don't know what everyone is talking about when they say he is a difficult teacher...he's easy. Go to lecture, read the book, and take the practice tests for an easy A. I will agree that his lectures leave something to be desired. He gets condescending because he has to continually explain what a peer reviewed journal is...figure it out people.
Just like anything else, you'll get out of this class what you put into it. Read the textbook, do all of the practice tests and questions in the workbook, turn in your journal articles on time and you should be able to get an "A". Overall, nice professor - difficult to read his handwritten comments on papers that are graded.
I thought he was a great teacher. He was very helpful if you went to office hours for further clarification. He is specific in the way he wants things done, so just make sure you are clear on that.
SYLABUS NOT CLEAR, Miller was arrogant and rude if you pointed this out to him. He is condensending and his tests are poorly written. I studied, took the mastery tests, read the text and still did poorly on his tests. I do not reccomend him, if you like psychology because he made me hate it.
I love psychology but taking this class was just a waist of time regarding learning about psychology, his tests are hard because they are not clear and his syllabus is very unclear. I do not recommend him by any means.
His tests are poorly written. The class has an e-book text, but he doesn't allow laptops in class, and he assigns work online that he doesn't know how to access, so you have to print out your results to hand in. Lots of students didn't understand what he wanted turned in, because his explanation was nonsense because he doesn't understand it either.
Fred is an extremely difficult teacher. I recieved an A in his class but unless you want to put in 8 hours of studying each week DO NOT take this class. He is an engaging teacher but does not always make his expectations clear. Makes you used online site that he himself does not understand. Very harsh grader on journal articles and tests
This guy did not know how to teach a class. He was extremely unclear about assignments, and the tests covered material that we didn't even learn. The mastery tests were a joke because people would lose the pamphlets and he wouldn't even help you find a new one til it was too late. And he forgets absolutely everything. Smart guy, but bad teacher.
Professor Miller is a very smart guy but he is not clear on class assignments, test and projects. He will say one thing and then do another. You will ask him a question and he will give you a responce "that's not what I said." People with disabilities should not take him. He's smart but not the best professor. Dont take this class with him.
Fred Miller has been hands down the worst professor I've had at PCC. His lectures are pointless, he is very condescending and rude, he accused the class of stealing a handout sheet on it on the 2nd day of class, he constantly shouts "HELLO!?!?!" if people don't respond within moments of asking a question. I will never take a class with him again!
Extremely difficult class - he was kinda all over the place. Extremely harsh on grading article reviews. The only good thing was he'd tell you what you needed to know for a test. I barely got by with a B and I spent more time on this class than any other one ever. The online help was more useful than he was.
Very smart but that's about it. I came to him for some questions once and he picked up the phone and called someone while I was talking to him. I would avoid him at all costs. Everything is about him, not you.
He was mildly aggressive with disagreement from students. He made mistakes in the syllabus that had to be corrected by students. He had to be reminded about giving study guides several times. He was often not prepared for class and was missing powerpoint slides. He had very low expectations of students and did not encourage critical thinking.
He takes offense when you ask him to clarify something. Classes seem to be thrown together the day of. He requires you to take and print out online tests from the book and he has no idea how to use and can't help you. His tests are also poorly worded and confusing and the points system he uses is archaic and confusing as well. Save your money.
I recommend this teacher to NO ONE. He is quite rude to students, and extremely unclear. His tests are difficult and most people get low grades on them. I was excited for this class beforehand, but Fred made this class super stressful and it turned out to be my least favorite class this term oh and don't even get my started on the term paper...
It only took the first day of class to realize that signing up for his class was a mistake. I had to withdraw from his class based on the fact that he was rude, arrogant, and taught like he was teaching children not adults.
Miller has a PhD in Psychology, and is a really great instructor. His tests are all multiple choice, and quite easy if you read the textbook. Very few questions come from lecture only (maybe one or two questions out of 40). He sticks to the text book, but does add some of his professional knowledge to enhance sections. Great class!
Nothing backed up on the course page. Easily distracted. Doesnt seem to know how to engage adults. Contradicts himself frequently. States inaccuracies. Said childhood masturbation is indicative of abuse, which is untrue. Talks down, addressing the group as "ladies.” Patronizing. Book includes intelligent design?! Wouldnt recommend to my worst enemy
great teacher. if you do the work he will help you. if you need the teacher to do the work for you i would not take his class. was fun. likes to help you find fun ways to remember things!
Fred is a terrible teacher. He doesn't cover material thats on the test during his lectures,he's unorganized and rude. The assignments do not relate to the class. If you enjoy wasting 3 hrs a wk listening to lecture and then having to teach yourself the actual chapter, you'll love his class. If you want to learn anything during lecture, you'll hate it
All I can say is WOW. There is nothing more i can add to the rest of the horrible reviews.Strangely enough though. Although Mr Miller's class was absurd and he was by far the worst instructor Ive ever had in my life, I actually had a conversation with him in the cafeteria. Turns out hes really a nice guy.who'da thought.
HORRIBLE teacher. Scattered. Rude. Unorganized. Never responded to my emails. Short tempered. Very unclear. Turned a fun class into a drawn-out, boring, frustrating and irritating class. 350 characters is not enough to explain the extent of how bad this teacher was.
Attendance is technically non-mandatory, but if you want a good grade plan on showing up and doing the work. Professor Miller has interesting perspectives and is helpful, interesting, and fair.
Mr. Miller is one of my all time favorite professors. All you need to do is put in the time and effort and you shall excel. He is willing to go the extra mile to help his students. He has a great sense of humor and his classes were actually easy. Now, If you are the type who skips lectures, arrives late or leaves early, his classes are not for you!
My main problem with Mr. Miller is that he races through his lectures and is very disorganized. Prepare to teach yourself about psychology during this course because you won't learn much in class. He lost our first exams and told us we would not be able to redo them. I also emailed him repeatedly throughout the course and he never responded.
Professor Miller is a thoughtful teacher and his lectures are interesting. His class is not too hard. A fair amount of reading, but not more than other classes I've taken. He doesn't grade harshly at all, as long as you make sure you understand the assignment.
terrible teacher. Rude. I asked him for a letter of recommendation because I did well in his class and it was littered with typos.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but he's rude. Condescending, unclear, disorganized. You don't learn anything about psychology. This has been a horrible class.
I signed up for this class expecting it to be helpful. I was dramatically mistaken. Many people left class , the first day and I should have followed suit. I ended up dropping the class later on due to very poor instruction from this teacher. He gives very poor instructions and is very disorganized. Expect to teach yourself.
He is incredibly disorganized, and will take it out on you. Even if you are on top of things and have talked to him about something previously, he will be rude and make you feel like its your fault he lost your paper with the feedback on it. He is condescending! Easy class, but he rushes the lectures but still expects you to know all the concepts.
I took both psy 201A and 202A classes and I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot , it was fun because unlike other lecturers he didn't stand and talk for the entire time. W e watched really interesting videos which aide in remembering the concepts we were taught and easier to associate it with the world around us. I would recommend it to everyone.
Incredibly disorganized; his office is an absolute mess. Not accessible outside of class and will not reply to email. Condescending while answering questions student's had, and vague expectations. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone.
Extremely condescending and made it difficult to ask questions. Generally very rude. Moves really fast through lecture and doesn't explain things well.
This is not a class where you have conversations to learn and develop ideas. He lectures and that's it. No open communication. He started using Launchpad for homework and quizzes &has no idea how to use it. Grades only off that. He forgets and goes back on what his expectations are. He's checked out and gets visibly upset when asked questions.
Prof. Miller loves to use technology in his teaching, which would be all fine and well, but he has no idea how to interact with it. about 30 minutes of each class is spent with him tinkering with the computer to get it to play a film (that has nothing to do with the content of the class). Although, I can say that it seemed like he genuinely cares.
Dr. Miller interrupted students when they ask questions or comment and will also argue with them when they ask for clarification. He does not make himself available via email or phone outside of class. Show up to class to catch small bits of info not in the book that WILL be on the exam. Exams are easy, but lectures are unbearably boring. He's rude
Dr. Miller is an exceptional teacher. He's extremely knowledgeable and has much to offer his students. To earn an A, you MUST take notes during his lectures--he tends to ask questions on the test that are not found in the textbook. There was a summary essay, and a final term paper assigned. He does offer extra credit. Tough, but worthwhile.
Great INTRUIGING teacher!
Lots of reading, test are based off lecture and text so dont miss too much class. He is VERY strict about any electronic use. He will call you out on it during class, even if you explain you are using it for notes, or calendar for test dates. WRITE IT DOWN then add it when you leave class. He can be rude when asking questions, quick to cut you off.
Knowledgable. Open discussions. Lacks understanding of technical english or technology, which causes confusion. Test-heavy, and questions/answers are mis-typed 40% of the time.
Miller is an easy grader but lectures nonstop and goes off on tangents so you never know wtf he's actually talking about. You pretty much have to teach yourself. He will lecture you on the next chapter right before you take a test on the PREVIOUS chapter which is insanely confusing. I think he means well but can be unintentionally rude at times.
Dr. Fred is extremely disorganized, doesn't listen to questions so doesn't adequately answer them, and is condescending and rude. His tests are designed to trick students into putting the wrong answer - for example he'll give two correct answers and you have to figure out which one he wants you to put. Worst class. Take the online version.
I feel like he wanted to be there part of the time and then the other part of the time, he felt like he was trying to get us to fail. It wasn't an easy class and I was not happy with him as a teacher.
