Very helpful and fair to students.
exhuberant professor, laid back and very fair
Cool Prof who knows his stuff. He's also very......interesting.
easy to get along with and quite helpful!

He's Great!!! :)
Blah!!!!!
he's really cool and he's not really a hard marker. just fair.
very nice and funny guy and good marker.but he doesnt always seem to know materi
Very skatterbrained often got off topic. Fair grader.
Great professor. Cares about students and always available to help. Good marker.
Really cool personality. Until I did this course with him I didn't care to read novels, now I do.
Great teacher. Super interesting and really funny. He practilly tells you how to write the essays before you do them!! He's really funny too in hte way that he IS a skaterbrain! Highly recommended

Hes nuts, a laugh to have in class though Strick in marking of gramer, even though his could use work
This guy is crazy! He is really fun to have in class and he can keep the classes attention. His exams and assignments are fairly easy and if you go to class he will practically tell you what to do on them.
great prof. good laugh in class too!

awsome....get him talkin about music and he wont stop!

This guy is an absolutely caring professor. A REALLY, REALLY good one too! At first, he may come across as a bit scatterbrained, however if you do the work he will give you your A. Not a fan of giving high As though (as in above 85). Overall though, I would highly recommend him! An awesome guy!!!
How could english be interesting??? Well this guy does a good job of making it as interesting as possible. If you do not understand something, you will definitely understand after he explains it. He is fantastic!!!!!
Murphy makes the class interesting with his attempts at humour. He's overall a great guy who shows concern for students. He has no problem with papers being handed in late or extending deadlines. Oh...and he's a pure newf!
bad man
He's a good guy! He cracks jokes frequently and he practically gives the answers to you in class for assignments or tests but he can be unclear and unorganized too.He grades ok and he is easy to talk to!
He's a bit scatter-brained and jumps from topic to topic a lot. However, he's funny and really into the stuff he teaches and so makes learning about it much more fun. I now actually like Chaucer! And he's decent when it comes to grades. Just don't try debating a point - he becomes even more scatter-brained and distracted when that happens.
hes a good guy....very funny. he is easy to comprimise with and really don't mind helping you when needed. he really gets into the novels which makes the class more fun!!
EXCELLENT prof, really gets into his lectures, and seems to genuinely love to teach. Is very approachable and willing to extend deadlines. I would highly recommend if you enjoy a laid back class and easy marker.
He's a nice enough guy. Really gets into stories and explains things with a lot of detail but his notes make no sense. If you ask him a question, he goes off on a tangent and doesn't even attempt to answer it and he's very inconsistant with marking. He asks you to be more detailed and then complain that you're being too wordy all in the same phrase
Avoid at all costs. Kinda like the Titanic: nice in theory but then sank and killed hundreds (of English-loving souls). Claims to be openminded but shoots down alternate theories, hard marker, will not under any circumstance change a grade, even if claim is legitimate.
Professor Murphy is the funnest teacher i ever had he is really good, but he marks extremely hard. You have to write exactly his view on the subject or you wont get over a 65 ! The funniest man Ever hahaha
This was my first english course at MUN and Professor Murphy changed my opinion of english. Everyone warned me how hard 1st yr english would be, however he made it fun. I loved how he got into the story and wanted to actually teach his students. I cannot thank Fred enough for giving me an enjoyable semester.I loved goin to class every night
He should have to wear a sign or something so you can avoid him like the plague. It is impossible to get anything constructive done in his class, and when he writes on a paper that this is a great improvement and gives you a lower mark...twice.....Theres gotta be something said for that. Good Luck to anyone who gets stuck with him!
Fred Murphy is an awesome prof, he explains things clearly in class, and expects just enough of you (not too much). Very good at grading essay, if you spend a decent amount of time on your essay you'll get a good grade. I was nervous to do english at MUN, but he's a great prof and I recommend him to anyone.
I couldn't stand this guy! Complete crack pot. If you want to learn anything about writing, he is definitely not the teacher for you! If you want to sleep through class and pass, he's your guy
I think Fred is a good teacher, he kind of teaches on the fly but at least he attempts to make english interesting. He teaches you things that will help you get better grades if you apply them. I think if you show any effort in this course he will mark you accordingly. He lets you revise every assignment so how can you not get good grades?
I always liked english, but Fred made it even better. We did George Jones and Johnny Cash for poetry. The guy came out and said he doesn't give lower than a 60. Get him if you can.
Animated prof, showed a genuine interest in topics and students' questions/opinions. Used great teaching tools (music for lyrical poetry examples, film, articles). Struggles w/having perfectly organized lectures but conveys the pts he needs to illustrate eventually. Highly recommend!
If you wanna learn something then don't take his class. If you want an easy mark then go for it. Notes are very unclear.

Fred is great! No, he doesn't give great notes. But he does give you scribbles that are enough to jog your memory. As long as you attend class, u don't even need notes really. He's very easygoing, easy grader, doesnt care much about late assignments. Scatter-brained, but funny and easy. Definitely recommend him! Taking him again this semester.
Absolutely useless. Discusses elementary topics and doesn't challenge people to their potentials. Misleading for first year students who think the rest of university English will be this slack. If you just need to pass this course and don't care to learn anything, take him, but don't be fooled into thinking you'll be so successful without him.
Worst prof ive ever had. going to his class was a struggle everytime. literally hated every moment of it. avoid him if possible! doesnt give good notes and very unorganized lectures, also extremely boring. tries too hard to be funny, but is actually inappropriate and rude. pretty hard marker, doesnt take any views besides EXACTLY what he wants said
Funny. Easy marker. Gives Friday afternoons/evenings off almost all the time. Tests and assignments were easy too.
horrible pro. I worked very hard in this course and attended all his classes. But he didn't care, gave me a 63 and sad "English is not easy."
Worst prof I have ever had. Did this course by distance, and he never answered emails or posted, even when questions were directed at him. Took over a month to correct the first essay, yet he made no comments or suggestions. Seems completely uninterested in students. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Do yourself a favor...if you have any choice at all, do not get this professor. Completely useless.
He took a whole month to correct an essay? That's amazing. He corrected my essay right before my eyes, in probably less than 5 mins. It was a research essay, so you'd think he'd at least CHECK one reference, but nope. He also comes off as a lazy prof, with not much enthusiasm in his work or his students. I don't get bored easily, but he bored me.
Took this course by distance. Hands down worst prof I've ever had. Took over a month to return essay grades, completely ignored all questions directed at him for three entire months. Not exaggerating when I say he did not teach for the entire semester. I don't know how he is in-class, but Do Not take this course with him by distance!!

Fred Murphy is a wonderful professor! You'll never get another prof like him. Very clear about his expectations. Laid-back, smart, and understanding. Very helpful. Gives plenty of guidance! Always willing to talk with you. Offers interesting essay topics. A refreshing change from most English profs around! Wish I could take another course with him!
Funny & never keeps you in class for the entire time. Not a prof to get if you're interested in learning a lot He's a fair marker & gives short assignments. If you want to finish mandatory English credits w/as little pain as possible, he's your guy!If you want to improve your writing ability, find someone else. Gives the same exam questions every yr
Can't complain about this prof! He's hilarious in class and assignments are returned in timely manner (if they're not he lets us know).
Had him for 1080/1110. He's a really nice guy, has a great sense of humor and he makes classes interesting. He's very accomodating and lets you write about anything you want. I highly recommend this prof!
The best prof to get if you want to get through english as painlessly as possible. Assignments are fairly simple and he`ll let you redo them if you want a better grade.
The marking scheme is competely whack. Skill builder paragraphs are worth half the essays... I don't recommend if you are looking to learn
Dr. Murphy is incredibly funny. He can be a little unorganized at times but he keeps the class interesting. He grades fairly, not based on content but the actual structure of your essay, which is the whole point of the course. Overall I really enjoyed this prof and I would recommend him to anybody.
IF you miss a class don't expect any help from him to answer questions on what was missed (medical reasons or not) Is terrible at replying to e-mails. Really nice guy but he can't teach.
Prof tends to focus too much on gender rolls and shouldn't be speaking of "what it's like to be a woman" when he clearly has no idea about what he's talking about.
I went through AP English (which is equivalent to the 1080 course) and got a 95, in this course my highest mark was a 75. This prof is biased in his marking, if your opinion does not agree with his he WILL mark you down a points, his notes are disorganized, and he frankly doesn't know what he is even talking about. Never get this man for English.
Knew him as a high school music substitute teacher before he was my English prof. Great guy, but he is a complete burnout. Didn't know what he was getting at half the time! Also doesn't grade as well if your opinions don't match his.
Dr. Murphy (does he even have a PhD?) is rude, unorganized and definitely a biased marker. He doesn't read your work, just slaps a grade on it. He will not listen to you or answer questions, he doesn't answer his email and gives no feedback. Avoid his class at ALL COSTS.
If you're doing this class by distance, definitely do not take it with Fred Murphy. He never returns emails through D2L. He said only to contact him via D2L but I contacted him at his @mun.ca account and he still didn't answer. Only good thing is that he marked easy. I got an 80-85 on everything. Although he gives you know feedback on your work.
Very unorganized. However, he does let you know exactly what is on the tests and the final, and exactly what he is looking for. If you can put up with his strange (really strange) behavior, he's an okay teacher.
Really funny and nice. Pretty burnt most of the time and unorganized.
I would not recommend this prof whatsoever! He is incredibly unorganized, very difficult to follow when he talks and does not provide any useful feedback to improve your writing. If you struggle with english and want to try to get a half decent mark, do not go with this prof.
What can you say about Fred. He is a different kind of professor. He loves to teach however his methods are different, in a not so we can follow what you are saying kind of way. Most of his classes I found him hard to follow, and I have ADD. He leaves topics hanging, but is willing to help you if you ask for it. Just be prepared to chat a bit.
I did this course through distance and I liked it, mainly because he marked very easily. I got 80-85 in my discussion summary and all essays. However, I emailed him a few times for clarification on a few things and he NEVER answered. He picked good novels to study, all were very interesting. Other than his lack of response, it was easy-going!
Takes forever to give back essays and discussions. Some students recieve their grades days/weeks before others. Not a terrible marker but doesn't provide great feedback on how to improve
Fred Murphy's class was a struggle to get through. His lectures are very repetitive and don't generally have any specific topic or aim. No matter what you do, you will not get above an 80 in his courses. He's a tough marker but doesn't necessarily give you any ways that you could improve your writing. Wouldn't recommend.
I got a 80% final mark and I am Asian! Do the work and you will do great in his course! Go to class and listen. If you play with your phone in class and later complain that he is a bad prof then you are the worst!
Great prof! Do the work and you will definitely have an A!
IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ENGLISH 1080 WITH FMURPHY: DO IT. It is easier than any English I took in High School. He often lets you redo any essays and assignments if you're unhappy with the mark, and 5% of your final grade is just taking notes while in class. It can be boring but it will take a lot off your stress load :)
Fred Murphy is a real character, he's super funny and easy going. A little unorganized and difficult to reach outside of the classroom, but grades things fairly and gives feedback on what you need to change. I'd recommend!
Yes, he is very disorganized and scatterbrained which is frustrating for some. He's obviously passionate about what he is teaching. Most lectures are pretty much a rant from him about the types of writing you're doing. He's really nice and honest if you need to talk to him. He also lets you do revisions for better marks. Love him :)
He's an okay guy, but lectures are all over the place and not really helpful. It's not that hard to get an 80 on papers, but he won't give higher or useful feedback/say why. If you want fair grading for good quality work, I wouldn't recommend him. Otherwise, if you want to pass with minimal effort and mediocre grades, he's probably a better fit.
Mr. Murphy was a funny prof who did not assign too much work. HIs grading criteria was not always clear, but you were able to revise essays and gave good feed back.
Fred Murphy is a great fellow, but this prof is the most burnt out person I have ever met. his lectures don't seem to have any meaning and I find he just talks randomly. he showed up 30 mins late to our final exam smelling like liquor and cigarettes, and then pretty much falls asleep while we were writing. pretty epic of him to show up loaded tho
The worst English prof I've ever had. Ruined the subject for me. Unclear instructions, spends lecture time rambling about everything and nothing. Doesn't use D2L and is unclear in his grading.
This prof is very unique and different. Fred Murphy is the funniest prof I've had, made night classes enjoyable and not boring. A little weird way of grading as he does not give more than 80 or less than 60... notes are a little unorganized but he does enough for you to do okay. Hilarious guy overall. Very little work in this course.
Fred Murphy is a funny guy who just wants your best work (especially grammar) and for you to not write too much in your essays! He may be a little odd but would take again.
His lectures are all over the place, doesn't respond to emails or use D2L, overall very unprofessional. However if you want to pass with minimal effort he's a good choice.
Fred Murphy is a great person and I enjoy going to his classes. On the other hand, he is all over the place, does not use D2L, does not respond to emails and gives terrible feedback with very little explanation. Extremely tough grader
I swear he didn't know where he was or what he was teaching for the whole term. He would show up late and walk in while already talking. He'll give you decent marks, but always the same mark no matter what you do and his critiques make no sense. He makes you meet with him to discuss papers, but then just talks in circles about irrelevant topics.
the FUNNIEST prof I have ever had at MUN. one time he walked right in and started class talking about how he had a soundtrack about the Vietnam war but couldnt play it for us (to our dismay). Ended the class by standing on a chair and banging on the ceiling. The class is super easy but his feedback stays super consistent. 10/10 would recommend
Lectures aren't easy to follow, but if you pick out key points you will do fine. He also allows you to revise work for a higher grade, so you can do better if you didn't do great the first time. His feedback is really confusing, so good luck if you have to fix an explanation. Highest mark I've gotten from him is an 85 (not told what to fix in work)
He gives you one chance to resubmit every assignment to get a better grade, but once I got 80% on an assignment and the only feedback he gave was a single circled comma. He's inconsistent with grading and gives vague feedback unless you go to him directly. If you have a strong english background you should be fine, if not, he's not the prof for you
The most difficult person to communicate with. He does not answer emails and does not give feedback on any assignments - just the grade. His teaching style is very unclear and unprofessional. When I tried to set a time with him to discuss grades, he never made time and on the rare occasion a meeting was set up, my questions were never answered.
Very laid back, and undemanding instructor. He was very straightforward about what he expected from his students, and he would never overload us with work (usually one paper to work on at a time, with about 2 weeks to work on it). I will say that I consistently got 7/10 on papers, which was frustrating, as I used his advice he would give me.
solid prof. always has a good energy when he walks in. definitely rambles, and is a bit strange but that makes me like him more. attendance is not mandatory, but definitely go every now and again since he posts nothing online. you do not need a textbook for his course, he will give everything to you. cant get anymore than a 70 on anything tho :(
Hilarious dude, compared to other english classes his workload was extremely light. Don't expect to get above a 70 on anything, and showing up to class is required as he posts nothing online. If you're looking for an "escape" from doing english, can show up to class, and you're fine with a B, his class is perfect for you.
Great prof overall, but you definitely need attendance. He is a very funny person and gives opportunities to resubmit papers "if you think you can do better". Write about exactly what he tells you and you will get good marks.
Classes were enjoyable and most of the time cut short, he is very straight forward with what he is looking for and gives numerous opportunities to get a better grade. Notes can be a bit confusing but if you attend class there is no troubles. Would definitely recomend if you are looking for a 1090 class with no novels.
What?… literally what is going on??? He walks into class already talking, is extremely rude, and doesn't post ANYTHING on bright space. The things he does post have the wrong dates, and then he won't take late work. He also screams at us when he's talking, instead of talking at a normal volume…
Taking his class felt like I was on a trip… genuinely, his class was so strange. He is very arrogant and rude, and feedback is unprofessional. He is not very organized as all of his handouts are crinkled, have the wrong dates, and pen markings? I'm genuinely so confused about what this class even is….
He's very disorganized, doesn't post anything online, and has the most unclear grading criteria I've ever seen. I'd recommend going to lectures to at least understand a bit of what's going on, but even then it isn't worth it.
He will ask the class questions, and when people gather the courage to answer him, he wont let you finish your thoughts, before, talking over you, cutting you off and shaming you in front of the class. Every time someone raises their hand, i cringe.
I would not recommend professor Fred Murphy because he is rude, arrogant, unprofessional, and disorganized. He comes off as supper harsh and aggressive, and isn't very kind to students. Teaching wise, it's very difficult to get an A in his class. Take this class if you want a GPA sinker!
Terrible. I have tried attending his lectures which never make any sense. I try reaching out through email and he has NEVER responded although when i bring it up in person he is aware i sent them. He often cancels classes and is never in his office during office hours. Nothing is ever posted online, and he deducts huge marks for missing commas.
If you're looking for an easygoing english course and are not particularly concerned about getting high grades, then this is perfect. The workload is not at all overwhelming and most of it is online. However, if you want high grades I don't recommend. It's almost impossible to get above 70%, and you also won't receive much feedback.
I ended the semester with a 69% compared to in high school when I had a 96%. If you have him as a prof, be prepared for his grading as it is often unclear what he is asking for. Also be prepared to go see him at office hours often as that is the only way you get a second chance with work. Overall, an ok prof.
the classwork and grammar test is very easy as long as you pay attention in class. will unlikely give a mark over 70-75 but no novels are included in his criteria. disorganized but as long as you try to pay attention his repetitiveness can be very helpful. usually has deadlines open until the end of semester and rarely docks late marks. funny guy
Don't expect anything above a 70% on assignments, and the feedback you'll receive is vague. Although attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, he rarely posts on bright space and doesn't ever reply to emails. He tends to often ramble during lectures and often cancels class. Would not recommend.
I put the online savvy tag as a joke, bro probably could navigate his homescreen. Nice guy. Got 70% on everything.
