The best prof in the college
I can't believe he's so enthusiastic about accounting
Excellent prof, knows his **** backwards, forwards, and three ways from Sunday
best intro acctg prof
You don't make the front of the registration guide by being a dink... probably the coolest prof on campus!
One of the best profs I had. Made accounting fun. I don't think many people would choose this major if he wasn't teaching the intro class.
very good at teaching, very helpful, friendly and funny. however, the class isnt easy.
Excellent, excellent, excellent. One of the best in the College of Commerce!
He is way too self-conscious.
Very good prof. Makes U almost want to major in accounting, strange but true!!
Made me want to go to accounting class. Probably the best teacher I've ever had in school, hopefully will now major in accounting. Take this class if at all possible.
I actually wanna go to an 8:30 am class. And for once a prof that actually wants to be there too!!! Best prof at the u of s! bar none!
This prof is very enthusiastic about teaching, he will have mid class breaks where you have to guess the song, he keeps you interested and motivated. He's willing to help whenever you need it. Beware of his multiple choice questions, they can be very tricky!!
Definitely one of the best profs ever! Don't take Comm 201 from anyone else!
Hard, but if you work your but off and read like he tells you to it's not bad.
Best prof ever! Actually made accounting interesting (well as interesting as accounting can be) wish he tought upper year classes! Text is the easiest text to read ever and as long as you keep up with the readings the class is a breeze! Just be careful because he words his multiple choice questions VERY trickily!!!
best prof ever.
this is not an easy class, but this prof. is the BEST teacher for it he really makes you to understand
Best university prof so far!! Very enthusiastic, approachable, understanding (breaks in the middle of class are greatly appreciated!!), clear, and fair. The textbook is amazing - I actually read the whole thing. Tests and assignments are tough, but fair. Keep up with readings and go to class (it's fun, anyhow) and study and work out examples.
Great prof. very clear in class and actually wants his students to do well. Examples in class are a great help
Very difficult class. Great prof with very thorough examples and outlines. Class is ridiculous as far as hardness goes though.
A great prof! really, probably the best I've had yet. The material can be a challenge, but he makes it really easy to understand. He is a very approachable guy and makes the class the least painful as it can be.
Although his text is expensive with no resale value, he is the best teacher I've ever had. He's very good looking and all men in this college should look to him for guidance on how to dress. He seems a little concieted, but he has the ability to make accounting interesting.
Best prof I've ever had. I didn't think the course was too hard, but he also makes it pretty easy. There are HW assignments but they help you learn the material. Highly recommend him to anyone who has to take 201. This class made me consider majoring in accounting.
Fred is the man, he is defintely one of the best profs within the University. Dont take the class from anyone else.
Best prof I had in university, even though I didn't major in accounting. Fair and expectations are laid out. Explains everything well.
Professor Phillips is great! He is one of the best teachers i've had here at UT so far b/c he honestly cares about your progress and he explains everything very well. I really wish he were staying for another semester! He is an awesome teacher.
I took the introductory accounting class from him at the University of Texas. He was great! Believe him when he says you CAN do well in accounting if you read the book, pay attention and ask questions in class, and see him for help on homework.
Professor Phillips is an amazing professor. He really knows his stuff and he does an excellent job teaching it. I took this class at UT and he was definetely the best professor I have ever had. I didnt even have to use the book because he taught so well. He does an excellent job making you feel comfortable to ask questions in class. TAKE HIM!!!
The best way to prepare for the tests are to go over all the homework that is suggested even though it takes a couple hours per chapter. Also make sure you really understand the concepts because there are some very tricky conceptual questions on the test. Just make sure you keep up with the reading and do the hw and you should be fine.
Professor Phillips was extremely helpful and very nice! Although the Accounting course itself and tests were very hard he presented the material in a way that students could clearly understand. Definitely would recommend him!
Any questions you have feel free to ask them in class or office hours, either way he will answer them. He was really great!!!!
Feel free to ask Prof. Phillips ANY questions you have, he's a great teacher and always willing to help. The biggest help to me was asking questions outside of class (office hours, e-mail, etc.) but also asking questions in class. The way to do well in accounting is to PRACTICE. Treat it like a math class, ALWAYS read and always do the homework!
This course taught by professor Phillips is just awesome! Even if you don't have a great interest in accounting Fred makes you interested with his enthusiasm. The course is tough, and it would help to read the chapters before class, WORK WORK the assigned problems (thats what I did even if they are not turned in) and highlight any terms or concepts
Awesome teacher, takes everything one step at a time, good sense of humor. One of the most useful lecturers I've ever had, hated to miss his class! Literally wrote the textbook!
Hard class, but attend every lecture and read the textbook (which he wrote). He explains everything really well in class and makes sure you understand it. Very approachable for questions outside of class. And Like he says, do all practice questions assigned, on a blank piece of paper. Overall, Amazing Proff!!
Best prof in the University of Saskatchewan.. by far!!!
This is a pretty tough class but you can really do well if you read the textbook, attend the lectures and do all the assigned questions for each chapter. Treat this class like math 110 and you should do well. Fred makes the class as enjoyable as possible, a actually looked forward to his lectures.
Fred is God.
Fred is the defintion of an excellent professor. His sense of humor, enthusiasim, and even taste of music make this class interesting. I had little to no interest in accounting before taking Fred's class. Now it may be my major! He's that good. Take accounting from this cat
Probably the best professor at the U of S. Wrote the textbook, which is very easy to read. Never been in a class that is so organized, everything has seemed to have been perfected over the years. Read the text book before class, attend the class, and then do the problems. The class is set up for you to do good.
The way Fred teaches sets you up for immediate success. He marks fair, gives approriate assignment requirements and choices, and presents the best powerpoint/organized course at the U of S. You cannot go wrong taking 201 from him (he doesn't teach anything else unfortunately!). Take a course with him if you have the chance.
Accounting actually was fun, and I learned something useful. Great textbook, really clear. Be sure to read the book before class and do the practice questions after class. Exams are tough but fair. He never makes you feel like a fool for asking questions in class.
One of the best profs you will ever have at the U of S. His marking isn't too difficult if you go to class and take his notes. He tries his hardest to make sure you understand. Highly recommend :)
He is awesome. Highly recommended for a entry level student. He makes thing very easy and student understanding is his first priority.
Fantastic prof, one of the best during my university career.
Greatest prof ever. Do not take Comm 201 from any other prof.
He is by FAR the best prof I have ever had. He makes it really easy for you to do well: weekly quizzes, weekly online homework assignments, a midterm, recommended practice, video lectures & fill-in notes, as well as lecture notes. Amazing professor. He made me consider accounting as a major. Absolutely phenominal!
Fred Philips is a gorgeous, well-dressed, articulate, and super sweet man. He takes teaching very seriously and puts together OUT OF THIS WORLD presentations. Best I've seen in any institution. He does his best to keep everyone up to speed and keeps everything interesting. He wrote the textbook so everything is perfectly organized. TAKE HIS CLASS!
He is an awesome prof! I'm glad I'm taking his class!
I do not recommend his class. Puts a lot of pressure on students
puts way too much pressure on students. expects you to do 30 hours a week of homework and treats you as if this is your only class. he does not understand that the other 4 classes you are taking also demand a lot of our time
has really stupid online quizzes every week with fill in box answers (really stupid), read a chapter or 2 every week with assigned hw, need to print class notes+fill in blanks, answers questions with more questions, puts an unfair amount of material on exams for amt of time, asks irrelevant questions like how to record revenue the wrong way on quiz
Are you kidding? His course is great! Those "stupid" online quizzes are easy credit for keeping up with your work. The text is simple to read and if you actually work out the practice questions he will help you to understand the material. The exams are hard but fair. You just have to know what you're supposed to know. I look forward to his class.
Anyone saying he puts too much pressure on students, must be new to University! he's an amazing prof! This 'pressure' people talk about is him clearly outlining what you need to do to succeed in his class where as other profs make you figure it out for yourself... An amazing class, one of the best profs I've ever had, super helpful! Take his class!
I think the last two post are being very ignorant. Everyone has their own opinion. I do not think Fred is the perfect prof. at all. This course is very practical and he never uses the chalk board (which is a negative). Uses too many word-plays/idioms(in textbook&lectures). And Online HW does take away time from students (to study for other courses)
This was my favorite prof that i had so far through University. If you are interested in accounting he will teach you everything clearly through the class to help you in the future. The online assignments are a great way to make sure you practice and know what your doing. I would highly recommend him as your prof.
Fred is one of the best professors at the U of S. and it shows. Whoever says otherwise is mistaken.
Fred is by far the best prof at U of S. You will not find a better prof than this guy. If you can, I would HIGHLY recommend taking Accounting from him. He cares more about his students than any prof I know. His powerpoint slides are out of this world. You will not regret taking this course from him.
I used to think he was a hard marker. But now that I'm in the major, I realise that he just had high but fair expectations. He helped me learn that you can't take all financial information at face value. You need to ask if a company's good results are caused by good work or skechy accounting. Figuring that out is the hardest part of the course.
hard to say the least. he is helpful but i think his teaching style sucks. wish i took the other prof
If your looking for an average booster, this is not the class for you. However, if you are looking to learn accounting Fred Phillips is the prof you want. His lectures are great and his door is always open to help his students. Best prof any student could ask for!
There is a reason why Fred wins some of the highest teaching awards out there. After 3 years of university he is by far the best and most helpful professor I have had. If you are willing to learn he is willing to help you succeed!
Fred was is by far the best professor I've had. He does everything he can to make sure you understand everything that he is teaching. The class has lots of outside work to do, but as long as you do it and keep up with the class it's a cakewalk. Also if you have questions he is very helpful during office hours would DEFINITELY recommend!
Fred was probably the best prof I've ever had! Definitely passionate about the subject and was very enthusiastic when teaching. If you do the work he expects of you, you will receive a good mark. Would definitely reccommend!
another best prof I've ever met besides Prof Kalagnamam. handsome prof, teaches clearly. but exams are a little bit hard, may get lower marks in midterms, final is much better
Fred is an awesome professor, you can tell he really cares about the students and does so much to try to learn everyone's names! I can't say enough good things about this guy but the one knock on him is he is a tough marker and isn't going to give you much (if any) benefit of the doubt on iffy answers on tests, but overall I would recommend him
One of the best profs I've had at Edwards. Really good at explaining concepts in class, and makes an effort to get to know all the students. Lots of online quizzes and reading but it helps you stay on top of the material. Gives you a few opportunities for extra credit if you need it too.
Best prof in Edwards! Clear, organized and passionate about what he teaching. Lots small assignments force you to read at first, but help you get a great grades.
There are a few questions for extra credit, but those mark doesn't help the grade that much. He gave the students so many pressure and didn't show specific criteria for exam. He expected you to memorize the whole textbook
Fred is truly an amazing professor. This course is definitely difficult, and there is a ton of coursework. However, Fred is very passionate about what he teaches and really knows what he's talking about. First true "teacher" I've had in university. Take this man's class!
Be prepared to spend all your time doing long online assignments. The tests were ridiculously long for the time given and no information on the types of questions were given. This was the worst class I've taken in three years, it made me have panic attacks. The final marks were also posted after the next semester had started already.
He is an exceptional prof! You must put in the work for your grade and keep up on the material from day one. Take advantage of Fred's office hours if you ever need help on a concept. He is very helpful and genuinely cares about your success! He is very organized and is a true teacher. I would love to take another class from him!
Fred is one of the greats. He truly cares about the success of his students and you can tell with of the planning he does. Attending his lectures is absolutely necessary to success. Lectures both interactive and he goes through every example (some are even on tests). Do the homework, he posts answers to it! Tests are no surprise but time yourself.
Fred is the best prof in Edwards. I won't lie this is a tough class with lots of work but if you go to class, do your assignments and ask questions you'll be fine. Fred puts so much effort into slides and stresses to come see him during office hours. Fred makes exams very clear to the class, he outlines similar questions to study prior to exams.
Fred is the most enthusiastic, helpful, caring prof ive ever had. He really cares that his students do well and he goes above and beyond to make sure they do so. Hes always polite and very open to questions, and he never makes you feel dumb if you say the wrong thing or dont understand a concept.
Fred is the best prof in Edwards hands down. He truly cares about each and every one of his students which is rare for university. His lectures are amazing and his knowledge of accounting is incredible. I won't lie this is a tough course which requires a lot of work but take it with Fred, he breaks down every concept to make sure you understand it.
Great teacher! Fred may be the clearest and fairest professors I have ever had. Class really isn't as much work as it's made out to be, put in a couple hours a week and do the assigned questions and the class should be a breeze.
Easily one of the best professors at Usask. The amount of time he dedicates to this course and the students taking it is astounding and very commendable. The course is challenging but in the best possible way, and with the best possible professor at the helm.
Fred is a great prof. Probably the greatest prof in Edwards. He really cares about what he is teaching, and cares about how his students perform, unlike a lot of profs who are just there for the pay check. One thing, is Fred has tests that are quite difficult. Particularly the midterm. It was way to long for the time given. But great otherwise!
I loved Freds class! He explains the content very well and does several examples in class. If you go to his lectures and do the practice questions that he recommends in the textbook, this class is not hard at all.
Fred is the best prof I've had at Edwards thus far. If you have the chance to take his class, do it! He is organized, passionate and cares about students individual success.
Fred is so far my favourite prof. He has class notes that go with his lectures, and he explains examples so that you understand. It is a harder class, but if you put in the work and do the questions he recommends, you will be fine. He is very approachable and easy-going, he made coming to class fun rather than a tedious chore. Would take again.
Best prof I've ever had in ESB. Sincerely wish he taught comm 210 as well.
Best prof I've ever had and probably will ever have. If you can't learn accounting from him, you can't learn it from anyone.
Amazing professor. Had him years ago when he first started teaching at the U of S. So glad to read he is still teaching and inspiring students and future CAs (CPAs). Attend all his lectures and learn as much as you can from him.
