“contrary to other reviews, he's super chill, and yes he's a critical marker, but so is every other english prof, if you do all the reading and understand it, and are able to prove you did the readings that's 20% of your marks, 10% is participation, and 5% for showing rough draft of the final assignment, so thats like 35% easy marks right there”

Very enthusiastic about the literature, clear spoken and very fair. A class act.

One of my all time fav profs. Fred has such passion for lit.&listens to wat u have to say, likes ur comments to be backed up.cares about students & class, clear & precise, extremely helpful, sum material can be very boring (copenhagen) but ive never wanted 2 miss a class. most definetely recommended!
Nice guy, very insightful. Entices provocative discussion about course material during class. ...don't take his class if you're boring + have no opinion, his classes rely on discussion to be interesting. Put thought into your work and you'll get a good grade.
If you have to take 1204 with Fred, make sure you have great notes from 1100--you'll need them!!! There's no teaching per se in 1204; just discussion... :(
Really laid back guy, reasonable, and doesn't use his authority to make you feel low. Honestly the most down to earth guy you could ask for. He accepts various opinions and he doesn't make you feel stupid because you don't get the poem ;)
This prof is harsh on marking. He is very unclear on what he is looking for. The class is easy but it also lacks directions. It is easy to get confused with what it is the students are suppose to focus on. He likes students that are really into plays and stories and if you don't read much, then you'll definately be lost.
Ok. When you go talk to him and ask him about how to improve, he gives you SOME feedback. But get this, you use it and then he just regurgitates the same comments that he used on your LAST paper even though you evidently improved! Blah, he's a nice person, terrible teacher. He needs to be consistent with his teaching & criteria.
He is a hard marker, BUT if you talk to him, he'll find a way to help YOU improve. I don't recommend taking him unless you have some talent in English. Because, he's particular with his ideas, and he docks marks off if you don't back up EVERYTHING. Otherwise, he rox. Good job FRED!!!
Ribkoff really enjoys his discussions, which I find good, since I learn best through discussing things. He tends to accept most people's opinions, if he disagrees its mostly due to lack of supporting evidence- in other words, he's not going to shoot you down just because he disagrees. His style of teaching really worked for me.
Terribly interesting, incredibly smart and insightful, and incredibly handsome too.. This class brought out an opinionated side I never knew I had. He encourages people to speak up and make their opinion known, you never feel dumb in his class. Make sure you show up, and have a sincere opinion on everything, and you will get an A like me!
Fred Rocks! Extremely helpful and encouraging when you're on the right track....if you're on the wrong track he'll just tell you. Make sure you go to his office hours if you want an "A" though (he generally gives better marks to students that do). He knows his stuff. Has a huge personal library as well (lends items). Only complaint: He's married.
Fred, you're my favorite Engl prof. You make the class highly interesting with your discussions and dry jokes. I could sit in your class for hours and never get bored of it, or you, or looking at you. I look forward to each and every class of yours. Boourns to you being married. We could have discussed Greek Tragedies until the cows came home.
what an f*****g horrible prof. the guys a straight out of shakespeare play nerd.... with just as ridiulous jokes coming out of his a**.
Very helpful; a fun and interesting class.
Fred is a great teacher. He doesent pressure you to respond to questions in class but has an open mind to those who choose to voice their opinions. I suggest taking notes durring class and showing up. His essays are straight forward and goes over everything you need to know in class. Great prof! really enjoyed his class and i recommed him.
He's funny. Sometimes he'll go off on tangents though that are more interesting than the course material. Similar in appearance and personality as Kramer from Seinfeld (minus the **** jokes). If you don't understand him the first day though it won't get any easier. I'm personally a big fan.
What a great and funny teacher!! Really helpful too.if u attend his class n participate or just say nething about the topic being discussed u get 10% marks. I had so much fun in his class. i recommend him to every1
Nice guy, plays favorites though. Did NOT like a lot of the people in the class and it was obvious by their grades. Delved far too much into stagecraft and theatrics in a literature class. Would have been a better class without the two haters at the back of the room.

Quite possibly the best prof in Kwantlen. Funny, helpful, AWESOME
This guy is a joke. For someone who teaches literature of the Holocaust he knows nothing about it. He talked in circles the entire semester. Half the class dropped or dozed during his lectures. This would have been a better class had it of been taught by someone other than him. Avoid.
Very nice, pretty pointless class. Easy to talk to. Decent marker. But didnt learn much
Fred is a witty and intelligent professor, although is very specific with his markings. Listen to his lectures, interact during the classes and you will do well. Tip: Send him your in class works for tips on how to improve every time. He will come back with clear and concise feedback to help you improve your grade. Definately my favourite professor
He is very helpful.. But if ur looking for a good grade, aint gonna happen if english is your second language. ask him for feedback before you hand in ur essay. VERY PICKY on gramma, therefore u better not suk at it.
Im taking his class right now. He doesnt really go over the readings a whole lot so read read read but he is soo funny so interesting and very helpful asfor his grading, ask and you shall recieve ..if you work hard it will be seen and graded fair
I didn't like him at all. At first I thought he was pretty cool but then he got annoying by telling some random stories that has nothing to do with topic we were discussing. Hard marker too! He chooses favorites too. He's too full of himself that its pathetic
rambles on about stories that have nothing to do with the topic in class. It gets really annoying, and he's a hard marker. His class isn't that interesting either. But if you ask for help/advice, hes there to do it
great prof. fair marker and a hilarious guy. always offers help.
This guys hilarious and ALMOST always has an interesting class. Pretty hard marker for a first year course but fair. Super helpful always willing to look at drafts etc. Strongly reccomend taking this class but be prepared to work pretty hard for a good grade.
Hell of a guy, funny too. But don't expect the class to be an ease at all, its a challenging class, if essay writing is not your thing, GET HELP FROM HIM.
Fred is the definintion of a good english professor! He's super funny, entertaining and engaging. His material is on current and interesting topics. Dont expect a good grade but hes is totatly there to help, and if you work hard an A+ is not impossible. He does like to rampble but so what? he funny as hell and it kills the time.
Pointless class, he just talks for the first half, and usually gets you to do group discussions in the second.
Fred was engaging and his topics were current and interesting. He encourages class discussion and probably swears/rambles too much for his own good; but it's entertaining. This was one of my favorite classes to attend! Really funny guy!
I never liked English, but Fred made it very enjoyable. It was interactive. He gives you chances to earn bonus marks and participating helps big time. Just come to class, keep up the reading and participate.
Interesting books. Makes learning fun. Helpful with feedback. Fair marker. Would take a class with him again.
Fred's a wicked prof, before taking this course I always thought English was just a boring course but he made it fun. He has a real good sense of humor and is really helpful with helping students. Don't expect an easy mark, he expects a fair deal of effort and participation so don't slack off :)
Fred is funny and makes class interesting He's nice if you go 2 his office for help. He places emphasis on analysis of text. I HIGHLY suggest going to office hrs to have him review drafts. If you are off track, your grade will suffer! Be prepared to work hard if you want a good grade, but an A isn't impossible. Work really hard and you'll be fine.
Super hot if you like older men (mid-40s). Class can be boring sometimes though.
Fred is very funny in class but I would strongly suggest not taking him for this course. I had a night class with him and he didnt have any night office hours. People take night classes for a reason because they work. I would try and make an appointment with him but hes not willing to work with helping you understand the material.
If you've got an opinion and can argue it, this is your man. If you can back a thesis it doesn't matter if it differs from his view, he'll take it. Consistently stays after class to look over your essays if you want him to. Loans out books to help with your writing. Hard marker, and don't open your mouth before you think. YOU ROCK, FRED! LOVE YA!
Extremely hard marker! For a first year course, he applied emphasis on things that weren't important, and should only be part of the criteria for upper level english courses. Would never take another class with Fred again
Great class, hard marker. Would def have him as a prof again!
Fred is a bit of a hard marker, but gives tons of chances to get extra marks on assignments. If you bother to do your homework, you will do well. He does like his f-bombs though so if you hate swearing, pick a different prof to take class will. Overall, a good class, and a good professor.
Pretty chill guy. Friendly but class can sometimes be a little dry. Tough marker but offers help if needed.
Great prof but hard marker. He does not give you much feed back on homework which screws you over for a essay thats actually worth marks.
we always talked about interesting subjects in class. i went to his office for help a lot when doing homework which helped me when doing the essays.
great teacher, had him for eng 1100 and insisted taking eng 1204 with him. Gives lots of chances to get extra marks but is somewhat of a hard marker. Very helpful and passionate about teaching. The readings were also very intereting and he never forgets to go over any of the reading. Highly recommended!
Great prof! I was really nervous about taking first year english but he is a great guy, super nice, funny and makes class interesting. Very willing to give you extra help and feedback, all you have to do is ask for it. I finished with an A. Definitely recommend Fred. Hard marker, but feedback is great and he will tell you what you need to pass.
Funny prof! Knows how to keep the class entertained and interested. Bit of a hard marker but he gives a lot of homework marks that make up for it. If you go to his office hours he gives detailed feedback on essays which helps for the midterm papers.
SUCH A HARD MARKER!!! Fred's class is so boring. He is a nice guy but will go on about unrelated topics endlessly. He has a certain way/pattern that he likes assignments to be written, if you don't do it that way, expect a barely passing grade.
He's a good professor in the sense that he is very helpful and is enthusiastically willing to give a lot of feedback on essays. However, don't expect all A's or even B's on your assignments. It may just be me, but this guy is a hard marker. If you take a class with him, be prepared to set some time on the side to see him during office hours. A lot.
HATED his class! I thought I was a good English student and he marks WAY too hard. The majority of my class dropped his class because they were failing. NEVER take him!!
Good guy - ridiculous prof. Half my class dropped out because of his marking etc, not clear with what he wants, SO much reading and almost essential to see him frequently about papers to pass. Funny but rambles on about unrelated topics endlessly. Friends of mine went from getting 98 a year before in english to 62, wouldn't recommend.
Such a hard marker, ALL of my papers had "see me during my office hours" feedback. Maybe I did so bad because I never went? But didn't know office hours were mandatory. DO NOT RECCOMMEND. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Fred is nice and all but he's an extremely hard marker. Half of the class dropped halfway of semester (which i should have done too) . He is very unclear on what he wants for his assignments. Tons of readings (mostly boring ones). He would give assignments and pages and pages of readings and movies to watch for next class. I would not recommend.
Simply, he is the WORST teacher i ever had. i am an international student and i seriously don't recommend him for international students or actually any of the student.
PROS: great teacher, enthusiastic and very helpful if you show up to office hours. willing to offer extensions if it will help. he drops the occasional F bomb, and is pretty funny. CONS: very critical marker, thats the only con.
The only thing with Fred's class is that you can't expect to be laid back and get good grades. If you put even 60% of effort, you are sure to get an A.
This class was combined with a Sociology class, and its focus was oppression, and what it means to be a survivor by proxy--very interesting class!! Fred is kind, helpful, engaging, and passionate about the course material.
contrary to other reviews, he's super chill, and yes he's a critical marker, but so is every other english prof, if you do all the reading and understand it, and are able to prove you did the readings that's 20% of your marks, 10% is participation, and 5% for showing rough draft of the final assignment, so thats like 35% easy marks right there
Before I signed up for this class, I read some comments about Fred and I was terrified to take him. Boy was I wrong. Fred gave very interesting and engaging lectures which made for awesome in class discussions, and easy writing assignments. Don't let these bad comments stop you from taking his class. He is an awesome professor :)
I loved my English 1100 class with Fred. Homework consists of weekly readings, one presentation, and one final paper. That's it. The class is mainly based on discussion, so contribute to the conversation. Some may think he's a hard marker, but I got an A+, so it is possible. If you're good at English and like it, you'll get a good grade.
You will certainly learn a lot if you apply yourself in this class. I would strongly recommend taking this professor if you genuinely want to improve your argumentative capabilities. The class was very interesting, although getting 90%+ is difficult. If you're aiming for an A then you're going to feel the pressure, but a B should be easy enough.
I only took it because I HAD to, otherwise wouldn't take english at all, but he made this class almost impossible for people to pass. Every week you get a reading to do and in class you write about it, and if he feels you didn't understand the reading or didn't do it you will get a 0. I read every single reading and still got a 0 almost every week.
If you are a thorough reader and can retain all main points, then you will do fine on the weekly paragraphs on different articles. Show up to class and actually participate in group discussions. It MAY save your mark. Don't take his class if you want an easy "good mark". He is a tough grader and doesn't explicitly state how he grades papers.
Absoloutely amazing teacher, you can tell he has a passion for teaching, he really puts his heart into every class and it shows.
Tough grader! Not really clear on specifications of what he was looking for either. Very passionate about the course and very informative if questions were posed. Loved the peer to peer collaboration. He encourages non-traditional learning styles which seemed to work best. 50% of our grades were taken from commentary things that were marked hard.
I had english 1202 with fred, although he made us do skits and preformances which i wasnt particularly fond of, i enjoyed his class. He gave everyone an A on their last performance and added 10% to the final paper. Would recommend
Fred is a really good teacher! From someone who hated English in high school, I got an A in his class. His way of teaching is really engaging. You just have to follow the style of writing that he writes and wants from you. 25% of the course was basically being marked on a paragraph you wrote for each reading on a pass or fail basis, super easy!
easy class to pass if you show up for the inclass writing assignment every class at the start, other then that you can leave early. Talks for hours on unrealted topics/issues and assigns one paper, all in all easy class but boring lectures
Fred is a really great prof, gets off topic sometimes but he truly cares about your success and gives great feedback if you care enough to receive it. Very engaging and lots of class discussion. Office hours are very accessible and he replies promptly via email. Really great guy, and great class if you actually want to learn something.
Fred is a super nice and funny teacher. I personally enjoyed his lectures and reading topics that he chose. If you like psychology or philosophy topics, his class will be fun. There are a lot of group discussions in class. Although i didn't do well in this course, this class isn't hard if you work/try really hard.
Fred is awesome! 10/10 dude!
worst
good guy but not a good teacher. talks too much, super unclear about his assignments, super hard marker, honestly wish i withdrew the class but yeah
nice guy, but not very helpful and clear on what he wants. Avoid him unless you want F. VERY HARD MARKER, and boring lectures. Makes you sit for complete 3 hours, and half of the time is group discussions just to make it 3 hours long.
literally the WORST prof I have ever taken at kpu. just because he doesn't understand something, he makes u feel like your wrong. really tough grader and u will NOT get anything past a C+. got 90% in English 12 and almost failed this class. also, his feedback is USELESS and reaching him at office hours was the biggest waste of time.
Very tough grader. Clearing doubts in office hour is just a wastage of time with him.
Professor Fred was a great professor who made his classes funny and engaging. Many of the topics that were covered were related to real world problems today. Most of the sesmter at the beginning of the class he makes you write out a paragraph and its either you get 100% or you fail that assignment. Participation is key.
a really nice guy, but REALLY hard marker. reaching him at office hours was a waste of time, didn't really tell me how to improve or better my writing. in-class writing assignments were dumb and ALWAYS got an X even though I wrote exactly what he wanted. don't recommend him
He has changed his grading criteria and I didnt feel that he was too hard a maker. There are written assignments at the start of every class. You get free marks for showing the draft of research essay. His classes were really funny and engaging. I really enjoyed taking his class.
Lots of readings and videos to watch. Had to read 5 plays during the semester, write 4 performance analysis, 1 essay and 1 performance in front of the class. He is super caring and funny, very passionate about his work. Does mark hard but gives good feedback to improve for next time. He is supportive of everyone and understands you.
