Hard class but worth it. His midterms and finals are scary, though.
Poor prof. brings far to much personal agenda and baggage to class. Thinks he is a lot smarter than he is. Grade is based on if you agree with him or not
Tough teacher... but fun, and fair....
Confusing prof. Seems ecentric. His views are totally out of wack in my opinion, he claims he doesn't express his opinion, but I think he does. Interesting conversations and subjects though. Pretty heated discussion.
Great teacher and a great class!
The discussions were great, but the tests were horrible, no matter the amount of studying i did my grade was never better than a C, and the daily quizes made me dread every day -- but overall he wasnt that bad of a guy.
A lot of hard readings. The midterm and final are hard. You have to study pretty hard in order to do well.
Fred is a nice and funny guy---the class is for thinkers, and if you want a good class that will be a challenge, then take Tabor. the tests require lots of studying, but overall, i am really glad i took the class. if you participate, he'll like you.
Do not take classes with him!
This class was a complete waste of time and money. I do not recommend Tabor to anybody. His ideas are for fetched and rediculous. I enjoy this subjest usually...but i dreaded his class everyday, spend your time and money elsewhere!
Good class for pushing your boundaries. Encourages debate and participates on both sides. Not enjoyable if you do not like having your ideas challanged, but besides that a great teacher. His tests are ungodly hard though!
This is the most time or money I have ever wasted on a single person. You are better off purchasing the book and reading it on your own than coming to his classroom.
Might as well go to church. Philosophy of Religion at WCC should be called "Introduction to Theological Reasoning". Essentially, you learn arguments for the existance of a christian God. Final assignment included single essay on Hinduism.
DON'T TAKE TABOR! It's IMPOSSIBLE to get an A in his class. He's self-righteous, biased, sarcastic, and abrasive. 40% quizzes, 25% mid-term, and 35% final. If you love yourself, don't put yourself through his class-every day I dreaded his class and I usually LIKE this topic! Take him and regret it.
This class was aweful. You were forced to go everyday because of the quizzes, and the tests were basically memorize 15 different peoples opinions and interpret them correctly, but somehow without conveying your opinion. Interesting topic, hard class. Somehow pulled off a B.
Difficult but worth it.
By taking this class I learned how to read more skillfully and to summarize ideas from readings more efficiently. This was largely because of the amount of reading assigned and the regular quizes. This class is demanding and not for everyone; however, if you work hard and have a good attitude, it can improve your reading, writing and verbal skills.
Comes across as reasonable but is two faced when dealing with students. Fred, stick to facts instead of innuendo but I guess that's why you're where you are. Do yourself a favor and teach social studies.
this is college, if you are interested in these type of philisophical topics you will be challenged and will ultimatly learn very much. Isn't learning what we are here to do? quit complaining or please give up your efforts entirely. These were the two most difficult and most fullfulling classes that I've ever taken
He is mean, bias and completely stuck on himself. Normally, the harder you work, the more you learn, but not with this guy. He completely overworks us and i dont remember a thing I learned. And he is so mean and arogant! I thank God that i was just his st

I have had the hardest time understanding him because of the way he talks. Kind of a ****, midwestern canadian. The quizzes are annoying, but fairly easy points if you do the reading. Be wary of speaking up in class because he will always have a response that makes you look stupid.
vague class that will only hurt your GPA
LOVED his classes, wanted to take more. students either got into this or didnt (lots didnt). must think outside the box, it is possible to get an A but you'll work for it

the only people that have a problem with this teacher are people who have problems with doing their work. You learn a lot and can get a good grade all you have to do is read.
The worst instructor ever. He acts like we are at Harvard University. Tabor gives three tests a week! The tests are based on 3, 10-15 page essays. There is a midterm (based on 15 essays) and a final (on 15 different essays). A lot of reading with really high standards. If you want to be challenged (and extremely annoyed)than take this class.
He is a difficult person and bias. I think he hates religious fanatics and people who cannot explain their views and beliefs. But other than that, he makes people think about the world and their actions. I think that is what philosophy teachers supposed to do. He is not a bad person, just a difficult one.
Don't take him if you don't like thinking or being questioned. You *will* be made to look stupid. Chances are, what you believed *was* stupid. He was helpful, and clear as you can be with philosophy. He facilitated discussion wonderfully. Fantastic teacher, even if he's a walking nervous twitch.
Fred's a great teacher. He PURPOSELY tries to outdo you in discussions, even if he agrees with you. It's his way of making you think, and it works great. He doesn't do it to make you look stupid. Just don't take his comments personally, because he doesn't mean them to be. His method is very thought provoking, and works great in a Philosophy class.
I found his mannerisms annoying and his manner of teaching even worse. The entire corse consisted daily readings and quizes and debate. Students are there to learn to interpret philosophy, not to bicker about their own incomplete ideologies. This class was not at all what I was hoping for.
This guys class is one long argument. He is a quiz nazi and grades his test like one also.Overall I did'nt learn much from his class besides I should of taken the class with cathy haggman
Hard class. Not for the weak minded. Good luck on the midterm and final you titans of logic.

He is horrible and doesn't care about the students. His exams are difficult and doesn't care whether you pass them or fail them. He needs to look for another profession.
A very smart man. He could usually out-argue the whole class. Really makes you think about defending your position. Mid-term and final are tough and cover a lot of material, but not impossible if you study. Very interesting material
socially inept, but teaching style is effective
Strange instructor, though very good making you think, as well as test your own thoughts and beliefs. The class is difficult if you don't read the text. If you do, your in good shape-he discusses the main points/ideas in the next class through "debate"
I learned Philosophy so much better from this guy than I have at WWU. His classes are a perfect mix of lecture/discussion and always interesting. He asks just the right questions to get heated debates going between students.
Fred's confrontational keeps you on your toes by forcing you to constantly defend what you're saying. It can be too much for many people and his grading can be challenging, but if you're serious about learning his classes are a complete joy.
Very interesting teacher. Doesn't tolerate ignorance or stupidity. Daily quizzes make attendance mandatory. Don't take if you don't like being called out for bull**** arguments.
Tough class, but very informative. Try to understand the reading, show up to class, voice your opinion- you'll get a decent grade. Loved the debate-style classroom.
I LOVED this class! It makes you think and Tabor goes against everything you say (to make you think) which I thought was very good. If your sensitive I wouldn't reccomend this class to you, but if you like a good debate on current ethical issues I would recommend this class. Tabor was very humorous! One of the BEST instructors i've had at Whatcom!

I have to admit, Tabor is a damn good instructor. He really challenges your perceptions of morality, and indirectly helps you better understand yourself. Naturally, the content can be difficult. My one complaint is that he relinquishes control of the class and lets holier-than-thou know-it-alls hijack discussions. Patriot-types: do NOT take this.
You must read all of the assignments. There are daily quizzes which are pass/fail. Classes are very heavy on discussion and Tabor challeges all ideas that are presented. The class is usually fun and always interesting. Mid-terms and finals consist of an essay on the readings but the majority of the grade depends on quizzes/attendence.
A decent teacher, he covers a wide variety of interesting topics that are very relevant. As much as he claims that he doesnt give his opinion in the classroom his opinion comes to the surface clearly by the material he presents in class. He will openly disagree with your opinion and make you look dumb if your opinion isnt "right".
Tabor is a great teacher because he knows his material. The only thing that I would say is that you MUST go to every class for there are daily quizzes that are a BIG part of the overall grade. It's a good motivation to read the book and be involved. Ultimately, believe me, you want to go to EVERY class and do as well as you can on the quizzes.
Tons of reading. Daily quizzes. Material was interesting, class discussion was awesome, but it seemed that the more active you were the more he expected from you. His was the only class I've ever received a B in at WCC, because he nitpicked my essays apart (ie. "that's not EXACTLY what the author said").
Fred is a really neat guy, but you will learn more from reading the book than you ever will him. This is one of those "if i have the book why do I need the professor?" type classes. Great class though, tons of reading, memorizing and class is always uncomfortable to attend because of the atmosphere and questions he asks you.
This is the second class I've taken that he's taught (this one being Religion), and I will warn you that these readings are often nonsensical, contradictory, and self-fulfilling... with that said, thank whatever powers that be for Mr. Tabor, because he does his best to make sense of it all, and is easily the most entertaining prof on campus.
Mr. Tabor was one of the best teachers that I have had at Whatcom. For every topic presented (usually very conterversial as it was a religion class) he gave bot sides of it and was always fair. Great class and great teacher.
Good job teaching, but one time, I heard him mumble "mental boy" to himself while walking down the hall from his office, when I asked him question regarding the text. Over all good, though.
I took Environmental Ethics with Fred Tabor and found it really worthwhile, although it started to feel repeatative at the end. Everyday you take a four ? quiz on the assigned reading and then talked about it for the rest of the class. Tabor challenged me to think about and support my opinions and was really funny, but at sometimes he annoyed me
Sometimes I got the impression that Fred liked to appear nutty and confused because really, what teacher has trouble remembering that the name of our new presidential elect is Obama! He is also very proud of how many books he has read and will mention it often.
Hands down one of my fav prof.... The class work is very easy- you just have to do it. He is very Knowledgeable and entertaining. You will learn a lot and enjoy his class. must be open to evaluating beliefs and ideas that you may not agree with. The lazy and/or ignorant will not enjoy or do well with this professor.
Probably one of the hardest classes I've eve taken, but I loved it. He will definitely challenge your ideas no matter what they are. Don't take it personally it's just his style. Lots of reading, but totally worth it.
Fred will challenge ALL comments, but especially challenges those who clearly speak from ignorance. If you are interested in philosophical subjects, his class does not fail to hold your attention. It is most enjoyable, but requires thorough, slow reading.
he is alright. we read the text alot and talk about it even more. that is about it
i dont get why everyone here is saying that hes an excellent teacher..hes not...tons of reading, daily quizzes...LOTS of material to memorize for mid term/final...he seemed akward sometimes and it got annoying when he argued with people..dont even bother stating your opinion HE WILL NOT AGREE...class was borin and repetitive
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. His DAILY reading quizzes are ridiculous and his mid-term is even more so! You lose points for leaving early. Hey, NEWS FLASH, I'm PAYING for that class I can do whatever I want. He's just so boring he has to threaten you to attend class. Absolutely awful. Worst class ever.
I don't really care for his teaching style. His class wasn't super hard but definitely need to do the assignments/reading he assigns. He has daily quizzes and marks you down on exams for grammar mistakes.
I don't understand most of the comments on here. How is this class hard? All you have to do is show up and pay attention. Pretty easy if you ask me.
he is the worst teacher ever, he is so liberal and will not agree with anything you say despite what he says he is not challengin your thoughts he is trying to mold you into believing that the bible is a lie and that eating meat is wrong.
tabor sucks at teaching i dont know how he is a teacher if you want to be in a class where the teacher is not fair than take this class.
If you read the short assignments and show up you'll pass. Tabor himself drives me crazy he contradicts himself several times within the same lecture and although he claims he will keep his personal views seperate from class it is quite obvious where he stands. Speaking skills are awful he talks to the wall and says um a hundred times per sentence
i really cant figure out how i feel about this professor. on one hand he can be a really funny interesting guy but on the other i have struggled with the tests and attendance. it can be easy to skip because all you do is basically debate the whole class time.if you are motivated and like people to REALLY challenge your ideas take this class.
Honestly I think people are too hard on Tabor. Its by no means an easy class, and you'll pretty much bomb the class if you don't do the readings, but as far as the actual material I really enjoyed the class. Hardest part is probly his tests. If your looking for an easy grade, do NOT take this class.
Excellent teacher! I would highly recommend him if for people that want to learn.
Fred is eccentric. He comes to class every day inebriated in one way or another. He likes to talk about drugs a lot. If you miss class, your grade will suffer dramatically. Don't talk during class. Do all the homework and you'll be fine. The tests are all memorization. The class discussions are useless. He's an interesting guy, but weirdly funny.
Fred's class was very interesting for me, yet others obviously didn't enjoy it. It isn't easy but it is worth the time. I would only recommend Fred as a professor if you are going to take it seriously, and work some-what hard. People who take his classes should actually try talking in them, it makes the time go by faster and actually is fun.
Fred is an amazing teacher...all these people bad-mouthing him on here clearly just lacked the intellect to understand that he challenges ALL ideas (something that he makes clear he will do from the start of quarter btw; he doesn't just spring it on you). I've taken three classes with him and have been very happy with them. He knows his stuff. :)
This class is NOT hard! I don't understand why people are complaining. Read the book and listen to the classroom conversations. That is it. Easy class.
The guy is a little corny in his speech, but the people saying he thrusts his opinions on you are dead wrong. PHIL is meant to challenge your preconceived notions, and if you come to class with an opinion based on ignorance he will correct you factually. He has an odd sense of humor, but he is absolutely a good teacher.
Scores: Teacher Booksmarts: 58bazillion. Teacher Peoplesmarts: minus 58bazillion. Total:Zero For Life. Students: Zero For One Quarter. Winner: Students.
If you're interested in binary confrontational arguments that are supposed to enlighten what this instructor thinks is your ignorant stupidity, take this class. Gray areas might be discussed, understood and welcomed by a different instructor. Incessant argument of black vs white is useless and is not indicative of the human experience. Beware.
You must do the readings and you must be open to learning to think critically about competing views. You may even come to question your own programming and learn to think on your own eventually. The class is a must if you want a life worth living.
While I had an understanding that this class would be challenging for my conservative beliefs, I was openly berated and made fun of for my faith in Jesus Christ. I understand not agreeing with viewpoints but a certain level of respect must be maintained. It was not. Quite a waste of time, to be honest.
Fred is a very pleasing mustached man. As a teacher he demands a lot out of his students. There are readings assigned each class and a quiz over them the next meeting. The midterm and final are fairly excruciating, as you must write an in-class essay over one of three topics, which he does not reveal until the day of the test.
He's a pretty funny teacher and the readings are interesting. He will challenge your beliefs, and he stresses that point throughout the quarter. If you can't handle being made fun of and/or challenged, he's not or you.
He's a hard teacher to grade, he is a very good teacher who really challenges you. He makes attendance required because he almost always has a reading quiz on the text. The articles are dense but if you like the subject they're interesting. His point is to challenge you by pointing out where you are wrong, he even said he will make you look stupid
Tabor has made philosophy much more interesting than I expected it to be, but don't take him lightly. Be ready to explain your reasoning for everything, read the material, know it well and show up for class because there's nearly always a quiz. Midterm and final are written exams on 1 of 3 topics but he doesn't tell you which one. Study EVERYTHING
Amazing class, never felt attacked, strongly considering changing my studies from bus. admin. to philo & psych bc of the way tabor showed me how to challenge my own thoughts in order to expand the range of them. Ive told my family and friends this class changed my perspective on life and although it was difficult work wise, amazing class in my op.
He was a really great professor that would argue with you using the arguments/reasoning that the author did. Reading and attendance weren't "mandatory," but you would miss quizzes that you couldn't make up. You could give him your answers before the mid-term/final and he would tell you whether or not it needed improvement. Overall great teacher.
Tabor engages the whole class in discussions that are highly philosophical and push students to think critically. He makes the class personable by actually learning names and encouraging expression of personal views. Yes, you have to do all the reading. If you put in the effort you will succeed and enjoy the class!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: He is the toughest teacher I've had. By far. Env Ethics was all about discussion, but very focused around the material. We were tasked to commit to memory full understanding the philosophies of dozens of authors and passages. And he graded hard. I had to work, but it was absolutely rewarding exercise, which I am better for.
If you don't like him you are not open minded and take everything to personal. Read everything many times, take detailed notes, and take part in discussions. He is one of the few who test what you actually know and understand of the readings you do. Midterm and finals are 1/3 topics, doesn't tell till test day, its essay format, study for it all!
LOVED this class. It's not that easy but you definitely get lots of information. a lot of readings. a lot of class discussions
Midterm/final were excruciating, you needed to cover 35 topics in a 2-hour hand-written essay. Readings were very difficult & took hours. Discussions were painful because of the lack of other student's understanding of material. Don't even think about looking at your phone, you'll lose all your points! I do not recommend taking this class.
He doesnt explain to you what he wants you to know Daily Quizzes on readings if you dont get them all right you get a zero on the quiz if you dont read everything 5 times you wont do well on the quizzes. if you don't want to sit through hours of people talking about their own opinions not about what you actually need to learn.don't take this class
Tough class Dont be afraid to challenge ideas and ethics I was embarrassed when I tried to speak with him after class and he asked me to walk with him and I use a cane and he walked away from me at a pace which was unacceptable to me If disabled be assertive If you take this class go everyday and read in depth If u participate you will pass
Relies heavily on the essay readings and gives quizzes every day to be sure you understand the AUTHORS point of view. No effort at all to bring the class into current times. Relies on surveys and research done 25 to 50 years ago. Only opinion that matters is his and the essay authors. This class is about ethics, right and wrong. Missing this.
He is hilarious! One of my favorite teachers. Apparently a lot of people don't like him, but I think that is because he actually expects you to read and know the material. He even says that his class is hard, but it really isn't if just you do the readings. He is the best at challenging ideas and views, a lot of people don't like that either.
People who complain it is a hard class don't even listen to him on the first day. He say it is a hard class, and the readings are hard, and requires you to read it a lot. The reason he wants you to understand the authors view is because how can you talk about something someone said without actually understanding what he said? Love his classes.
If you don't want your beliefs challenged don't take this class. Also when he tells you that you can write up what you believe are the answers for the 1st exam and he will read them and let you know. you better start reading all the topics because if you give it to him 6 days before the exam he will laugh in your face and tell you it's too late!
Stuipidly hard class. The highest grade anyone got on the midterm was a C-, and I had no idea what he was talking about in any of his lectures. He also seemingly lost track of most of the daily quizzes I turned in and did not give me credit for them. Nice dude but a bad teacher in my opinion.
I loved this course. The readings (especially for the first half of the semester) take some effort, but are nevertheless interesting. Tabor is funny and very smart, and often brings scientific studies to class. The exams require quite a bit of studying. My only complaint is that he never introduced himself, so I don't know what to call him.
One of my least favorite instructors.. His discussions always end up off topic and he asks really personal questions in front of the class. Readings are boring and he expects you to remember everything you've read for the midterm and final.
Not effect at all. He doesn't really teach. 20% he lectures and the rest 80% he starts off the class with a hot topic and the impressionable student go off rantingdebating and he just leans back in his chair and enjoys the show. Basically: he doesn't control classroom discussion. Also, textbook teaches you, not him. Expect to get a C on the exam.
Fred is a joy to listen to, he throws many jokes into his lectures, whether you catch them or not usually depends on how hard you listen to those lectures. He tends to ramble a bit before he asks his class questions, making it difficult to understand the question clearly. Class is a discussion, join in and understand the authors, quote them often.
Be prepared: To get called on randomly. To have a quiz on the reading every day. To not express YOUR opinion in anyway for tests or homework. Heavy grading. Somewhat unfair grading. Long lecturesdiscussions. Tests will be on 3 VERY broad topics so be prepared to read and understand everything. The philosophy was interesting. The class was not.
This class was certainly engaging. Being a firm believer in God, I found my beliefs constantly being challenged, usually in a respectful manner, but sometimes not. If you don't want to debate, don't stick your neck out there. Reading before class is important for the quizzes and tests, but the daily class discussions only vaguely relate.
If you're taking this class to have fun or challenge your beliefs, I say take it. Tabor is funny most days,& WILL challenge every idea thrown at him. If you're taking the class to fill credits & keep grades up, don't. There is a quiz every day on reading that even he doesn't clearly understand sometimes, & the exams are even harder.
He has a laid back personality, and it pretty funny at times. For some he might challenge beliefs (but it is philosophy so get used to it). The class consists of reading material (which isn't too long), and then taking a mini quiz almost every day on it. These are not hard, but the mid-term and final essay, you must put in a lot of effort.
Just read and take the quiz
Easily one of my top favorites, but be prepared to work. You must do the readings every day, and you will get a quiz first thing every day. Do this. be articulate with your ideas, verbal or written, and you'll have a great time if you want to evolve your ideas. Tabor's hilarious, witty, cutting, aloof, and caffeinated. Need help? Ask, but work.
midterm was open ended (no rubric) and therefore a little difficult. quizzes and reading are easy once you get the hang of them. don't take him too seriously! when he challenges your beliefs he's trying to get you to expand on your ideas, not tell you you're wrong. he is witty and sardonic, quick grader, loved him as a teacher!
His midterm and Final were two of the hardest test/essays I've ever done. You essentially have to hundreds dozens of ideas from around a dozen philosophers, and regurgitate 1/3 of them, while ignoring 2/3 of the ideas you spent hours memorizing.
If you talk in class and have side conversations he will write it down and take two quiz grades off for every warning he gives you. He doesn't let you make up anything even if you have a legit reason. Requires you to read every day. Challenges your opinions. Grades extremely hard. Doesn't give you a heads up on what he will grade your midterm on.
I really enjoy Fred's class. The information I have learned has changed the way I look and live my life!
Fred is an amazing teacher. He is funny, challenging, and very intelligent. If you show up to class and read, you will do fine on the tests. 40% of the grade is the quizzes he gives each class, which if you read at all, are extremely easy and open ended. He says at the beginning of the quarter what he expects of the students and he sticks by that.
Was not a fan of Fred, although I did enjoy the material he gave us for the readings each night. His grading was awful either full credit or none at all on quizzes and the midterm is hard. He also has a slight speech impediment while there is nothing wrong with that, it can be difficult to understand or hear him. He also won't tell you your grade.
I graduated from WCC in 1994 and Fred is the only teacher who I remember as having learned something from. Highly recommend. He is a wise dude.
