He was a JERK! He always made mistakes when showing how to do the work but no one would want to correct him b/c like I said he was a jerk. Also, he flips out and yells at you if you're late so you would just rather not go to class than get yelled at. Too many horror stories. Stay away!
He has a great sense of humor and if you're on time and you don't talk a lot in class he is your buddy. He makes mistakes at times but he knows it and he is clear in his explanations. I enjoyed his class and his jokes.
hey this guy wasn't a jerk.. he was really nice and absolutely hilarious. when he did yell at you for being late or whatever else, he was usually joking. he may make occasional mistakes, but he means well and he is very helpful whenever he can be. i hate math, but i loved his personality
I thought that he was a fair teacher, I am not a math type person and I somehow pulled a B, My advice is DOO THE HOMEWORK. Because in the end if you have done it all he is VERY liberal with your grade, Not the best teacher to get help from but he put up with all our whining....

He is a really humorous teacher and means well however I have to say he's not the best at explaining math to those who are not experts at the subject. I have trouble turning in all the homework since it's in bunches and you don't even get graded as much as
This guy really knows what he's doing, and dosn't mind going out of his way to clarify anything with you. I like how he presents the material, really easy and straight-forward, learning was a piece of cake. A must have!
Well he's cool and funny, just don't be late all the time... kinda boring tho, but that's cause I already know all this stuff.. or may be cause he's borning...
Fred is cool when he's up at the front of the class. He explains things very well + has a great sense of humor + makes classes fun. The only complaints I have are that he is slow at passing back hw + is awkward to talk to. If you ask him a question 1 on 1 he's kind of vague + not too helpful. I can tell he's a cool guy but he's frustrating as well.
He has a very dry sense of humor, but is hilarious. Very clear on what is a hard subject. He doesn't like people moving around in class or showing up late; He gives a glare at you until you say something. Overall a really good teacher, take Utter.
I agree he's not best at explaining how to do the homework, but he's one of the funniest math teacher's I've ever had. His humor might be lame, but its all in good fun. I even brough in cookies to class one time when he said whoever was late next time should. I had a fun time for someone who hates math class.
Fred has a good sense of humor and I like him as a person, but he's NOT a good math teacher. He moves too fast through the material, and DOESN'T explain things in a way that you understand HOW to do a problem. Fred has a PhD in Mathematics and acts like his students do also. 90% of the time the whole class doesn't know what he's talking about.
Math 151 was a life changing class I got Ds in high school math and hated the subject. Now I am a calc student and Econ major at SSU, Fred is fun and great at teaching math, he is always available during office hours and very helpful. i highly recomend taking any of his classes.
This class is tough, but he uses the calculator for everything (my dreams came true!). His exams are pretty difficult, but the majority of the exam is multiple choice & T/F. There are 4 exams... and quizzes on the homework problems (with use of the homework)... if you do the homework, you will do fabulous on the quizzes. Overall, a good prof!
likes markers too much.. teaches too fast... get a tutor
Fred has a great sense of humor, but goes too fast when he's explaining the math. He needs to make sure students understand one thing before moving on to another.
Fred Utter is a horrible teacher. He goes extremley fast in his lectures and makes no sense in what hes teaching. You would be better off teaching yourself the homework and only attending class on wed. when its due along with midterm days. Do not take this teacher. He tells alot of jokes and they aren't funny. Hes also somewhat ****ed.
a lot of homework. 3 midterm and 1 final, homework,attendance...if you do well on the homework assignment, you can get C. if you are looking for an easy teacher, he is not it.
The Good Nice guy, funny, a likeable person. The Bad Was not always able to explain problems he assigned! Used a reader, so there was little feedback on how you are doing. Received full credit on homework even if I did it wrong. The Ugly Much of the finial was not indicative to the homework questions, many low scores on the final. Bew
started out well, did homework, good grade on first midterm, but Utter started moving too fast, midterms got harder, stopped learning and dropped
Fred was a good teacher with a quirky personality. Some days he was downright offensive, but his teaching more than made up for it. He listened to students questions. Fred taught the language of math as well as showing the proofs for the formulas presented. This helps when you go on to higher math. I think his class helped me more than most.
Statistics is not an easy class no matter who is teaching it. Fred does not help by being unorganized. It is unclear when homework assignments are due and when tests are going to be. He is usually not at his office hours. However, he has a great sense of humor for a math teacher and genuinely seems to care.
Funny guy, but he expects you to pretty much teach yourself from the book. Very unorganized, and doesn't explain much.
I thought the class was pretty easy. But, I did have to look at the book to really understand what he was teaching. I agree that at times he came off as unorganized and it was unclear when HW was due..... In the beginning of the semester, he says it's due at the beginning of the week (M/T), but then changes it in the middle of the semester.
He always tried to make us understand, tried to crack jokes, but I still found the class rather difficult. I didn't care for the class, but it wasn't "horrible." He CAN BE HARSH when you are late or ask for help on homework material that we just covered in class. CAUTION: HE DOES MAKE A LOT OF MATH MISTAKES WHEN TEACHING!!
This is the WORST teacher I have ever had. He would humiliate students in front of the whole class, make people feel stupid for asking questions and would treat you like an idiot if you didn't get it the first time around. Two tests in a row the highest grade in the class was a 76! Not one student in my class liked him. STAY AWAY!!
I WAS ALWAYS SO LOST WHILE HE TAUGHT THE MATERIAL IN CLASS BECAUSE HE WAS ALWAYS SO UNCLEAR ABOUT IT.HE WOULD MAKE A LOT OF MISTAKES ON THE BORED.DON'T EXPECT TO UNDERSTAND THE SECTION UNLESS YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK BECAUSE HES NOT MUCH HELP!!!
Stay away! He gets soooo mad when you are even 10 seconds late, he yells at you when you talk in class, and we have sooo much homework. The homework doesn't even help with the tests. Good luck if you get stuck in his class....
He is a unique little guy for sure...he likes to go off into crazy stories when he saw us sleeping. I'm horrible at math but i managed to get a B, but it wasnt easy ... he is rather difficult to understand.
This man not only treats his students like they're kids, but he is rude and makes them feel stupid by humiliating them. If he feels like the homework should have been easy, he won't answer questions about it. He is constantly making mistakes during lecture and is very unclear. He expects you to learn everything from the text. One word: RETIRE!
Do not expect to learn anything from him. All he does is stand in front of the class and trip over what he should be teaching, making countless mistakes along the way. Everything I learned, I learned by reading the book. If you are one who can do this, then this class is pretty easy. If you actually need a teacher, this class is very difficult.
I honestly thought Fred was hilarious. While he's not the clearest teacher, he does try to make difficult material accessible to the average student.
The material isn't difficult to grasp but Mr. Utter will do his best to nit pick for every little mistake you make. He is a challenging professor but I'm glad that I took his course. He really prepared me for statistics at UC Davis once I transferred. Also, he's a pretty funny guy (must be that jack)
He is a hilarious teacher. He will definately keep you on your toes. He makes sure that evrything is understood before he moves on in the class. Be on time, and don't plan to leave early, and you'll do just fine with him. I had a great time in his class...Oh, one more thing; Never let your phone ring in class. He will answer it for you!!
Crazy instructor. Keeps you on your toes, and very energetic. Very strict on tardiness, will put you on the spot if you come in late. Very clear when going over assign. and will do review in class for any ?'s about homework. Study guides for all exams!! Make sure phones are off for class. Overall great instructor, recommended!!
This was a hard class but if you do the homework and take notes you can get a solid B. He takes time to explain concepts thoroughly. Gets mad if you're late to class or don't do the practice tests.
He tries to tell jokes...they are not the funniest ones I have heard...but he tries. As for his teaching, It was very confusing for me to follow. I am not the best in math to begin with, and the clarity of his lectures is not strong. He does ask if anyone has questions, but most the time you don't even know where to begin asking.
Good teacher, tells a lot of jokes, but recycles them a lot to so it will tend to get old fast. hates it when you are late. The class is fairly hard, but as long as you study (you get notecards for the tests) and do the homework you should be good. Helpful and stays on track.
What an "Utter" waste of space... This guy is horrible. He sits in front of the chalk board and regurgitates his notes. It's like he doesn't want to teach. He is the absolute worst Math teacher at SRJC... hes the reason tenure should be abolished...You will end up teaching yourself by reading and rereading the book! Look to others for guidance...
rudest teacher ever. started class right on the second (no joke!)i came in a whole 30 sec late one day and he stopped class completely to escort me to my seat then proceeded to attempt to open my book bag to get my book out for me because i wasn't getting it fast enough.
One of the coolest math teachers ever. Definitely pick him!!
Lots of homework! and tests are really tough. his study guides dont help, and no matter how hard you study it's still tough. he's a funny teacher, really nice, but a little unclear at times. he almost expects us to just understand, then doesnt pay attention when half of the class fails. if youre good at math, you'll be fine.
Utter's a really funny guy!! He sometimes goes through material suuuper fast but don't be afraid to ask. His tests are really hard and lots of hw. He geniuinly cares for his students and how well they do but his way of teaching is really hard. If I had to take him again I would. Do NOT be late or let your phone ring, he will answer it!!
Worst math teacher ever. Expects us to know what he is teaching about. Won't answer question and would get mad if you do not get the material. would not recommend him, waste of your time!!!!!!!!!!
Fred is hard to rate. He is clear in his lectures (for the most part)but tends to stray from the subject sometimes. Homework assignments are pretty easy if you pay attention, but he won't help you with it until you thoroughly confuse yourself with it first. I had no trouble with him, but others might.
He is a person who thinks he is funny in the classroom, however offended when people do not give a hoot about what he has to say, we dont want your worldly views just a passing grade. he did not help outside of class and was sometimes unclear in class. i suggest you take someone else with a caring intent for his or her class.
5 reasons why not to take futter aka buck futter. 1. He is too lazy to answer ANY HW problems from the current assignment. 2. He makes a plethora of arithmatic errors in lecture. 3. He is too lazy to write up test reviews so he just photocopies them from the book. 4 His tests are very hard. 5. Hes a complete **** over partial credit on tests.
UTTER IS A TERRIBLE TEACHER. He could care less about his student. Math has always been my strength but i recieved a C in the class even after putting alot of effort into the class. You need to be able to learn on your own if you want to take this clas. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
soo funny! and always there to help when you need it. the bad thing was that whatever he had on the test review was nothing like what is on the test.
Funny guy in class. Likes to make jokes and mess around. Doesnt take roll after the first week. What is on the homework and test reviews is NOT what ison the test. likes to give the hard tricky problems on tests that he never goes over in class... gives no credit if you dont show all your work even if you do it in your head
It's a bad sign when half your class FAILS two stats tests!! Be ready to work your butt off if u want anything better than a C. Had him in 155 though it was alright but this was another world. If you love math take him. If your a normal person who just needs to fill GE do not take Utter. Loved the guy to death but HATED his teaching style!!
Fred was great, do the work and you will get a good grade. Have a question? Ask, he will answer
worst teacher ever!!! he was always in a hurry to teach, thinking more of his vacation than actually teaching the students good... He's teaching style is horrible!
UTTER IS THE MAN! such a funny, down to earth teacher. No he is not easy...HES TEACHING STATS! But for the subject he is teaching he does an amazing job. He is always willing to help during office hours. If u put forth effort you will pass. 4 tests, he drops the lowest one. Also drops a homework assignment. its worth it
He comes prepared for class and begins right on time. His notes are super helpful and he tries to make math hands on and cracks jokes. He expects his students to show up on time and pay attention-considering its college that's not too much to ask for. His tests are moderately hard and HW due daily.
Do Math a favor and fire him...
Class starts on time. You walk in late and he will stop class and make sure to draw all attention to you. He will let anyone who shows up to add the class. Reasons: the more people in his class allows him to get a reader for his homework assignments (which means less work for him) and he also knows that he will lose two thirds of the class.
Post HW Q on board. Only answers what he thinks are necessary.NO note card for tests. Doing poorly in class,it is your fault. This is just a job. If you can teach yourself, take this class. If you want a math teacher who can explain math concepts in more ways then one or teaches out of the book; read the other reviews and pick another teacher.
His jokes are corny, but he is really good at explaining concepts. I am not a "math person" but had no trouble understanding the material. Don't be late or let your cell phone go off in class. He doesn't take roll after the first few weeks. He sometimes talks down to students which I didn't like but did a good job keeping the class interesting.
Good class for someone that dosnt really care for math. Techer jokes around, and doesnt really care about much other than your test grades. Drops lowest test score (or half of your final that is 40% of grade) and 2 lowest homework scores.
I loved this class! Fred was very clear on how to solve each problem step-by-step and went through lots of examples with you. A lot of homework, but if you do it then it is very easy to pass the class.
Typical math class. Only thing different is that the teacher makes alot of jokes.
Good teacher. I think he's a funny guy, helpful. He is very punctual and great at walking you through problems step-by-step, very clearly. Drops the lowest exam score and 2 lowest homeworks. Unless you can handle stopping the class and being the center of attention, don't be a second late, or let your phone make a sound :) Not that hard though.
Statistics ended up being a difficult subject for me. Fred really did his best to make sure that everyone does well. He made us do a lot of exercises and really practice everything until we really got it. I would definitely suggest taking one of his classes!
He is a very good teacher! He goes through tons of examples step by step, and always answers questions with clarity. He is strict and has high expectations, but that will make you a better student. He genuinely cares if you do, and wants you to succeed. He has a fun sense of humor, too! I'm definitely taking him for stats if I can.
Terrible Teacher. I took Math 155 with him and he bases your whole grade on tests. He doesn't go over the material well at all and makesthe tests way harder than they should be and doesnt give you credit if your work isnt how he wants it. He said its important to do homework but that doesnt count towards your grade at all. Not a good teacher at all
Utter is a really top-notch teacher. He just doesn't put up with whining, and no college proffesor should have to. If you actually study to try to understand the material, instead of just trying to complete problems quickly, you will do excellent. He is Always there at his office hours. He is a witty guy, just might not appeal to everyone's humor
Mr. Utter is not a very good teacher or mathematician. He's nice in a weird sort of way, but he has very little patience for explaining things, and makes mistakes when he feels impatient. If you already have taken most of this material, you'll do fine. I'm new here, not "mathy" and passing, but I feel like I'm doing it totally without support.
Dr.
Utter is all over the place. His examples on the board don't cover whats on the homework and he always has errors while doing an example. No quizzes and homework is due every wednesday and worth little for the class. Confusing and didn't help much. Don't recommend!!
Fred Utter is all over the place in his teachings. He gets everyone confused and basically expects you to know everything. I used the book to teach myself instead of listening to his lectures. I would not recommend if you are the kind that needs extra help. If your gifted or put in extra work to study, then you will pass.
So how can I put this..I would never take him again if he was the last teacher on the planet! Math comes easy to me and I still kinda struggled because I pretty much taught myself from the text throughout the semester to get an A. Hmwk doesn't count much, so you have to do well on exams. I guess he's nice in a weird way, but I dont recommend him!
Utter is an okay teacher. Anyone who does not have a good grasp on math should stay clear. He explains things quickly. I enjoyed him and recommend him but is not a teacher for everyone.
I would highly recommend that you run the other way and not take this class. He tells crude stories, he does not act like a professional. He does not like to go over concepts or repeat himself. I get the feeling that he does not like being there. He is somewhat lazy at teaching as he does not want to be helpful.
Amazing! I came into this class terrified because I am awful at math but Fred was great at clearly explaining topics and gave different ways to figure out the problems. Definitely made me appreciate math more. And he has a good sense of humor!
Dont take his class!! Utter is completely confusing. He is extremely intelligent when it comes to math, but his people skills are utterly useless. He doesn't clarify things well and he makes you feel dumb for asking a question to begin with. He get very frustrated very easily and people tend to walk outof his class consistantly. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
Only 8% of the grade is based on homework, the remaining 92% is based on three exams... all semester. Dr. Utter is condescending & unapproachable. Don't bother asking questions in class, he will look at the clock & make comments about how you should already understand. My recommendation is STEER CLEAR! About half of the class remains,w/a month left
Fred is the worst kind of teacher. He's a high school teacher and doesn't treat you with courtesy or respect. He makes some pretty offensive comments in class and will single you out if you do anything besides sit quietly. He says if you don't pass you can always work at McDonalds. I dropped and retook the math test and got Math 15. Don't take him
Worst teacher I have ever had. He is very unapproachable and condecending.. If you don't understand something he just tells you to read the book. Half way through the class he told us that we should all just drop if we didn't understand what he was saying. I asked for help and got nothing... Stay clear of Fred Utter!!
Fred was the most confusing professor I've ever had. He would start his lesson then half way through realize he messed up. When asking him for help he would repeat the material in the same confusing way and would seem aggravated because It did not make sense to me. Only way to pass this class is teaching yourself from the book.
As much as I want to say it was a bad class, it's not as bad as some may say. If you put in the effort to understand the material, he goes over the basics in class. He can get very confusing and go fast during lectures. If he does, TELL HIM! He is not very helpful outside of class, but it's on you to get the help you need. Take him if you need it.
Do not take this professor. He is extremely confusing in every way and to be honest, I learned way more from the book than him. He will mess questions up half way into it and start all over. Even though he could be funny at times, it does not make it better to have him as a professor. I do not recommend him at all!
Utter is very frustrating teacher. He doesn't fully understand the material he is teaching and frequently teaches subjects wrong. He gets mad at the class for not understanding things that he didn't not accurately teach. I question the intellect the people that gave this teacher his teaching credential.
If you are not good at math as it is, don't take his class! He expects you to understand everything he says, he moves through lessons really quickly and easily gets flustered when anyone has a question, not to mention he is rude and very condescending. He is a very intelligent individual, but he lacks the ability to share his knowledge with others.
Teacher clearly knows about the material he teaches. The only issue is that he expects students to know the material prematurely as well. There were many instances when a student asked for help and was ridiculed that they should already know the information. Otherwise this was a basic math class that didn't require participation or class work.
He is the most unhelpful professor I have ever had. You pretty much have to teach yourself and when he tries to explain something he just makes tons of mistakes and the other students have to correct him. Homework barely affects your grade so if you don't test well you are screwed. He makes rude comments to students is just overall negative.
He was unhelpful, rude, and blamed us for not understanding. He made numerous mistakes and we had to point them out. Not only that but he literally insulted us. He called us stupid on numerous occasions. We were unmotivated even to answer him. I do not recommend him to anyone.
Warning! Do not take Utter for Math 9. One of the worst professors I've had at SRJC. His lectures are long and unclear. Although he attempts to answer your questions, it is extremely difficult to understand his explanations. Knowledgeable, but can't share his knowledge with others. I would definitely advise taking another professor for Math 9.
Not too clear in class when going over material during lectures. When asking a question during class he responds with a question in return. He also expects you to know the material before taking the course. The book is a must have from at least the first day of class if not the second. All homework is taken seriously, no late turn ins.
If math is your subject... take this class! He is very unorganized, rude and offer little help. Complains a lot about his life. The lessons are really of no help.
Completely unorganized and rude, he changes due dates each class meeting so you never really know when you will be coming to class expected to turn in an assignment. He will say one thing then change it without informing the whole class. Don't waste your time using his faculty page, he doesn't update it and you'll end up repeating an assignment.
Don't take this class! He is very set in his ways. Even if you get up in class or do one little thing he will stare at you. He also sometimes calls students out in class and uses ridicule. He is very forgetful, moves very fast through material and is unorganized. He doesn't know what homework is due and he doesn't grade the homework himself.
Very unclear about due dates for assignments. Very fast long lectures, no clarification. He is rude and condescending if you ask any questions. Does not let students work through problems in class, just solves them quickly on the board while you watch in silence. Will not give help. Does not except late work and frequently changes due dates.
Would not recommend this class. He is completely unorganized and rude. Offers no help at all and will respond to your question with another question. While teaching he will do problems and skip multiple steps and will act surprised when the class gets confused or doesn't understand the problem he is trying to explain.
Utter's classroom etiquette and teaching method do not facilitate effective learning. If you are someone who struggles in math and needs concepts explained multiple times or in multiple different ways to really understand, you will not do well in this class. If you are prepared to teach yourself out of the book or with a tutor, you may be fine.
Very rude and gets annoyed when asked for help. Do not recommend.
I repeated Math 155 last semester. I didn't find out I had to repeat until after everyone had registered, and math classes are taken fast. Mr. Utter was one of the last choices but I assumed because most teachers at the JC are great it would be okay. His teaching was hard to understand and wasn't kind about answering questions. Wouldn't recommend.
I had to repeat this class and took it with Mr. Utter, and I'm repeating it again after, felt like I barely learned anything even reviewing. Skips steps on the second example and on really hard things like matrices by hand (etc) and didn't usually explain well what he was doing. Didn't answer questions thoroughly and respectfully. Don't take him.
Would constantly make mistakes during lecture, making it very difficult to understand the material. If you want to teach yourself, this is a class for you.
Utter was a cool prof. I loved his class.
