Great
I love Andy!! He's great at explaining tough subject matter and makes sure to do a lot of examples. Class can get boring from time to time but he works hard to explain material and make it relevant to life. Take his class if you can.
Andy is phenomenal. He's a brilliant professor who not only knows what he's talking about but knows how to explain the material clearly. Homework is mandatory but really helpful if you put in the time. Always gives practice tests/answer keys that look just like the exams
He's awesome and relatable. His lectures are easy to follow and he posts them online. His practice exams help out a lot.
Great lectures. You can take notes but it's easy to just listen and absord the information. I recommend sitting close because he talks somewhat quietly. Really interesting guy and for sure knows what he's talking about. Easy B, apply yourself and you can get an A.
Professer Hanssen is very knowledgable and his lectures are usually entertaining and always makes learning relatable to the real world. He curves the grades of the class and makes getting an A not that bad.
He speaks very clearly and is able to get across main ideas really well, so I definitely recommend him, even if you normally hate economics. Get to class early, though, or else you'll be in the back, and he doesn't speak very loudly.
Class is an easy B, and if you took economics in HS even easier. He is very clear and iClicker games really can help your grade. Attending class was optional considering we had 300 students but if you did you hardly have to study. Jump on it from the beginning and you can cruise to the final.
Awesome teacher kept things very interesting and fun for the class. Uses examples that everyone can relate to. Practice exams are super helpful. Definitely reccommend.
He is a really good teacher! He explains everything very well in class and makes it interesting to the class. His tests are kinda hard since they are a lot of hypothetical type questions but he curves the grades so don't feel too bad if you do not do great. Def would take again
Such a great professor, really tries to make the material relevant. Attendance is a must in my opinion because the iclicker questions really help you understand the material. I didn't even open the textbook and got an A, just be sure to take the practice exams and go to the discussion section.
Awesome senior seminar. Feel like I finally applied everything I've learned (in a good way). Very relaxed but intelligent professor.
Definitely a class you should study for, but his practice tests are extremely helpful.
Dr. Hanssen's class is pretty aggravating. You can study for hours, go to Review sessions, take the practice tests, and still get solid Bs on the test. His lecture material is pretty vague and his wording of questions is unnecessarily hard and tricky. I would suggest taking another Professor if you can.
Sit close to the front if you want to be able to focus with a 300 person class. His lectures are clear with a lot of examples. Plus he can be pretty funny. 75% and higher is a B.
Phenomenal teacher. He takes a pretty dry subject and makes his lectures humorous and interesting. However, his classes are huge! There were probably 300 students in my lecture so we are broken up into TA (discussion groups) for meetings once a week. If you have a good TA you're set. If not... good luck. Tests are really hard, so you need to study
Unhelpful and smug when you approach him about the material and tricky questions; moves through the powerpoints too quickly to get all of the information. Tried to take pictures because the figures were not included in the blank slides, and actually watched him speed up so I didn't even have the time to take those. Take someone else.
I dislike economics in general but Professor Hanssen made it tolerable. His lectures, although they can be quite dull at times, are usually dumbed-down to make the material more understandable. I hated the TA sessions that were mandatory to attend and they didn't help whatsoever. Practice tests will help out a lot so make sure to look over them.
Lectures are not bad & he makes the material comprehensible but he seems to enjoy confusing students with his question composition. He purposely words his test questions to cause confusion. Practice tests are inconsistent with actual tests which are much more difficult. I would suggest an alternative professor.
Pretty good lecturer, required TA sessions helped a lot so long as you come with questions
Best teacher I've ever had. sweggy man.
Makes boring econ lectures somewhat interesting and easy to understand. Doesn't take attendance but if you want an A you have to go. Also basically get extra credit if you go to class with your iclicker score. Awesome teacher, getting an A is not extremely difficult!
Professor Hanssen knows a lot about the material, and the lectures aren't boring at all. My problem with this class was the tests. I made horrendous grades on every exam, regardless of how much I studied or tried to do practice problems. Tests are composed entirely of "which is the most correct" questions. If you're new to econ classes, godspeed
Professor Hanssen is to date the smartest and most interesting Professor I have had at Clemson. Take him for 314. There is homework due every class, but it's not to time consuming and can really help you understand the material. There is also a quiz every class, so dont skip. His class is very difficult, but with effort, attainable and enjoyable.
Hanssen is hilarious and very kind as a professor but his tests are VERY hard so you need to put a lot of time into studying and practice problems or you may not pass.
Brilliant! My favorite professor so far by far! The way his class is set up you will know the material by the end of the day. Great at explaining things and tests are fair as youll know what to expect from practice questions. Class average is bad but our generation is socialized into false economics and some just don't get Econ. GREAT CLASS!
When I started Prof. Hanssen I thought oh this will be great, his lectures were interesting and fun to listen to. However Hanssen gives four major tests consisting of which answer is the "most right." I've managed to scrape by with a B but, beware he's difficult.
One of the most intelligent professors at Clemson. Lectures are fun and interesting and involve a lot of class participation. Tests can have trick questions sometimes but he gives awesome study guide packets that will help you a lot on the tests. Overall this class was one of my favorites and I learned microecon like the back of my hand.
Unless you already understand economics do not take this class. His lectures are confusing and his tests are unnecessarily difficult. I've had to learn a lot on my own. I put in a lot of work studying and it barely pays off.
This guy was very difficult, but he really knows what he's doing. Don't expect to just show up and get a good grade. Tests are very difficult but fair. He puts practice exams up that let you know exactly what to expect. A very likable guy who is approachable and down to earth.
Professor Hanssen is very smart has fascinating lectures. This is a great class for Econ majors. If you're looking for an easy A, choose a different teacher, as he has the lowest average grade of any Econ 2110 teacher and some find the tests difficult, but if you understand Econ and/or want to major in it, take Hanssen, he's a great professor.
Covers relatively basic microeconomic concepts, but if you don't understand it 100% you'll feel like you're getting your ankles broken by Kyrie Irving. Some test questions will juke you out of your soul if you're unprepared. However, if you take practice tests and/or just have a good conceptual understanding of the material you'll make an A.
Professor Hanssen is great- he's very smart and makes the class interesting. I figured I would be able to do well in this class with an average amount of effort.. which proved to be wrong. Be prepared to study a lot, but know that by the end of the course, you will have ninja microecon skills.
Incredibly tough class. Definitely would try to take this class with a different teacher. Class is very test heavy and if you do poorly on the tests there is no chance to come back from it. If you don't have a good TA, you won't do well. Final was incredibly difficult.
Overall really nice professor, but the class is really hard. If you have a bad TA your grade will suffer. The course is test heavy and the tests are impossible. If you miss out on lectures you will have no idea whats going on in the class.
He is a good professor overall, but do not take this class if you are not an economics major or anything related. If you're just clearing a Gen Ed, stay away. Choose a different professor unless you want to work hard for a low grade. Even if you think you understand the subject, his tests are so hard that you'll still get a low grade.
Dr. Hansen is amazing! He makes econ easy to understand and provides lots of in class questions to make sure you understand the material. As long as you read the textbook, do the practice questions, and take good notes, this class will be a snap. I didn't much like the mandatory TA sections but I may have just lucked out with a bad TA.
Professor Hanssen is very well respected. He uses examples that makes Econ more understandable. He is an amazing teacher, but his tests are very difficult. However, he gives practice tests that are very similar to the actual test which is very helpful. The TA sessions can be a bit annoying, but if you are blessed with a good TA it can be helpful.
Hanssen is incredibly knowledgable, but is extremely difficult. His lectures move quickly and contain a ton of information. His clicker questions and tests are really tricky and he grades them hard. TA sections help a little. I don't recommend this class for people that aren't Econ majors.
Professor Hanssen is a well respected professor in the economics department. However, his class is about 300 people which I guess is the be expected for a gen ed, but it made it really hard to pay attention. His tests are hard so your only chance is to try to listen to him if you don't grab on to economics well.
I really enjoy Mr. Hanssen. He is very knowledgeable and teaches well. He does a lot of iClicker questions in class which help immensely. He seems like one of those professors who actually wants his students to learn well. His tests are exactly like the questions he puts up in class, so go to class. Also, try to sit near the front to hear.
Dr. Hanssen is definitely into economics. Unfortunately, his lectures contain 300+ students and your weekly discussion session is lead by a TA who doesn't understand the material much more than you do. The tests are not too tough but there are weekly quizzes/homework in your discussion session.
Great professor! He has a really dry sense of humor which makes his lectures interesting and funny. He was my favorite professor this semester.
Hansen is ok. Hes not mean and strict but hes not the easiest teacher. I had this online so we just watched lectures and it was hard to stay focused. The test are the only grade in the class which is annoying. Test arent hard but they arent easy
Super nice guy. Class is decently easy. Provides a pdf textbook so you dont have to buy it. We're supposed to read the textbook every class, but I've never opened it. His tests are hard but if you study the hws and the practice tests you'll be fine. The hws are completion grades and pretty easy. Just one each week.
Find a different professor. It seems as if he gets pride from his students getting low grades. If you look on the grade distribution, several of his classes have 0% students making an A. He also curves your discussion section to an average of 75. So if you do well on the homework, it doesn't matter because your grade will still be lowered.
The worst class I could have taken for Micro econ.... being all online is impossible and I have asked for help so many times and its the same exact advice over again. I have changed my study ways and actually felt ready for my last exam and did ALL practice questions and made a 43.... please tell me how that works. Practice questions dont help.
Unless you are already an expert in econ, I strongly recommend not taking this class and finding another teacher, especially in an online setting. The work isn't bad but the tests are ridiculous, and the questions are so unnecessarily hard and it seems like he takes joy in tricking you with every question. I strongly advise to not take this class.
The exams are worded so unnecessarily difficult and all of the answer choices are almost identical. My class has yet to have a class avg over a D. Then, for test corrections if you complete them, you get maybe 2 points back. Class is complete garbage. Do not take with this professor, I heard other professors are better with their exams.
This is the hardest class ive ever taken. the content seems so easy but he makes the tests so incredibly hard. the practice tests given before exams can be somewhat helpful, but the wording on the exams is so confusing. even my TA for the class thought the exams had ridiculous questions. take a different professor and youll do just fine.
This is not the course for the faint at heart. There seemed to be a lack of communication between him and the TAs as both lectures did not correlate to one another. The class is failing as a whole and they all brag about how hard the class is and that no one makes it out with a B. The exams are 60% of your grade. Pick another professor if you can.
In class the material seems easy, but the tests are impossible. He tries to trick you by giving you practice questions that ask the question one way and the actual test appears to be the same, but then it is a trick. If you look at grade distributions for previous years, there are sections that 0% got an A. This class is impossible to succeed in.
iClicker for attendance. Long lectures that are vague and unclear. Relatively easy to access outside of class but very large class size. Lots of exam review material but exams were unnecessarily hard in my opinion.
Nice & accessible prof- HARD class. iClicker for attendance every lecture. Lectures are long and do not teach you the strategy for succeeding on tests. The one plus: 75-90 is a B. In ADDITION to lecture you have to attend an extra TA session each week. TA section is 20% of your grade & is curved to 75 average, so your grade could be curved DOWN.
Great lectures, uses iClicker questions to make sure you come. Classes twice a week in lecture hall and once a week with a TA in a much smaller class. Graded on three exams and a final, the discussion section which gives book homework, and iClicker questions.
Dr. Hanssen seems like a nice guy, but is probably one of the most ridiculous teachers I ever had. The class is lecture form 2 days a week then a small group with a TA one day a week. The TAs are not on the same page as Hanssen and frequently contradict each other. He takes joy in making the exams crazy difficult and failing the class. Do not take
Go to lectures. Explains the material well and relate it to the real world. The tests are difficult and your grade will drop a lot if you do poorly.
Professor Hanssen doesn't have tons of homework, but is extremely test heavy. He posts 100+ question reviews and even with doing all of the questions every time I have never been able to make an A. All of the questions seem like trick questions and unless you understand it seamlessly, you won't make an A
The exams are so hard, and the grading does not make sense. Even if you get As on everything in the discussion section, your grade gets curved to a 75. They also assigned a research paper the week before finals. Overall, worst class I have EVER taken.
Yes, all he does is talk and sometimes his lectures may be boring but he is very knowledgeable about economics. He uses real world examples and there is plenty of extra credit given. The class can be confusing and that is why you should attend every lecture. His slides and iClicker questions were helpful. Study for the exams!
This class is DIFFICULT. Every lecture he just goes through the slides, so taking notes feels pointless, but at the same time, the slides won't prepare you for the test. I suggest doing Khan Academy and taking the practice exams over and over again to try and teach yourself the material. The concepts aren't too hard, but the tests are. Good luck.
exams are impossible
Readings before each class but most material taught through lectures. Graded heavily on three exams but provided good practice exams that greatly helped with each test. Your TA could make or break the course for you - no contact with Hanssen only your TA. Extra points added to each exam with opportunity for exemption from the final.
Hanssen is a great lecturer who makes his lectures engaging and informative with loads of real life examples. The tests, however, are very tricky. You need to consult more than just notes to succeed. Go to TA sessions and study very hard for each exam and you should be fine. He's a little forgiving/curved a test 1 pt and has a small EC opportunity.
This class was a little challenging because the tests were difficult, but professor Hanssen has lectures with really good information and makes sure to include exam questions in his lectures. As long as you study and go to office hours, you should do well.
Everyone is assigned a TA, which you receive a separate grade for. You have have homework and in-class TA section quizzes based off the material from lecture that week. However, each TA section must be an average of 75%, meaning their is a potential for a down-curve, and your class is essentially punished for understanding the material.
I would not take again! The tests were hard and made no sense. Class itself not terrible, but iclicker questions count and when the internet went down he would still make your iclicker points go down. Only way I understood some stuff was from my TA. Discussion section curved to a 75 and brought down grade. Final was 30% of final grade and was hard.
I would recommend not to take his class. He is a great person, but he was not good. Only grades you off the three tests and the i-clicker questions. The tests were pretty hard, and my TA did not speak fluent English, which made it even harder. His class overall was boring. So avoid him at all costs.
Super chill guy and his class is straightforward. Watch the lectures, do the hw, review the hw answers and then repeat. Has discussion boards to help you with every assignment and is on Zoom during the exams. Only 2 exams which are open note and most exam questions come straight from hw. Put the time in to watch the lectures and you'll be fine
I really don't know why people hate on Hanssen so much for micro. Lectures are actually pretty interesting. He posts a question bank with every possible exam question. Thoroughly read through it before each exam--- this helps TREMENDOUSLY. Half of the exam questions are on there. TA session is helpful. I ended with a B+ and he curved to an A.
He grades on this weird 75% curve that makes it impossible to have a good grade in that class because even if you are doing well, the curve will drag you down. He uses TAs for weekly discussion sections, but they also don't know what they are talking about and it is not helpful. His lectures are also ridiculously fast paced and very confusing.
Professor Hanssen is an overall good professor. Due to the class being so large there was TA sessions and if you get a bad TA have fun. I understood the material well but when taking the test the questions are rather difficult. He does lower the grade range because of how hard the class is which is rather nice.
He explains the concepts in class using slides which are later posted in Canvas. You then get assigned to a TA that hosts a breakout section in a various location. All of the TA sections have to be curved to a 75% average: meaning your grade can be curved up or down. AVOID! b/c this course is built to give you a B.Grading scale is 75%≤x≤90% is a B.
He talks so fast during his lectures but he does know what he is saying he just says it in a way that he thinks we will all understand, which most of us don't. He is a good guy and the class its self isn't that bad i have just found that you need to more so meet with your TA or reteach yourself outside of class before the exams.
Good guy, but very hard to learn from. A lot of homework and reading. You need to buy two textbooks and iclicker program. Weird grading scale. Lectures are fast paced. TA breakout sections with weekly quizzes you do poor on because lectures are hard to understand. Unless you have a good grasp on economics, I'd recommend you take another professor.
He grades on 75% curve that makes it impossible to have a good grade even if you are doing well, the curve will drag you down. Some of the test don't include the material covered in class. Discussion section grades are not visible just the full garde. I will not take any class with the profesor due the grading curve system. Also is not PAL section
The lectures can get boring but he's a pretty funny guy. I would go to office hours for both him and your TA to do well in the class. Attendance is based off iclicker so just go to class and pay attention you'll be fine.
Professor Hanssen is great! He's a really good lecturer and is super funny! Your grade is based heavily on 3 exams and the final, so there's not a ton of room to make up for it if you happen to bomb one. But he posts practice exams that are exactly like the real ones, so you should do super well if you study and use those.
people who gave this man a 5 are just proud that they got an A, lets be real guys, as someone who was in the top 3% of the class I can confidently say it might be time to retire. He has missed multiple of his own multiple choice questions in office hours... I do feel confident in my econ abilities but the fact that he can't do his own questions...
I took Professor Hanssen's class my first semester Freshman year, and I didn't struggle all that much. I will say I had previously taken Macroeconomics in high school so that definitely gave me an advantage. Although all of Hanssen's classes are lectures he makes it fun, and understandable and it's not that boring.
Grade curves to a 75% even if you get a grade above it. Random questions on tests, with random answers picked.
While this class was difficult Professor Hanssen was a good instructor as he kept lectures interesting and gave you all the materials you needed to succeed in the class. Exams are the most difficult part of the class, however if you go through all the practice questions and make sure you do the assigned readings you will be fine.
This class was easy and had a light courseload. Just make sure to read the textbook each week, and you will be fine. His lectures were very engaging and helpful. Make sure to volunteer for class exercises for extra credit. The exams are just like the practice questions, so study those.
Lectures can be a bit fast but are generally easy to follow. It's important to attend class for iClicker points (which are mostly easy to get) as well as to understand the course material. Make sure to get your homework in on time and do the extra credit that will be offered at the end of the semester. Tests are long and you will need to study.
The class was pretty hard simply because the wording on all the tests is meant to confuse you. You have to go to class everyday to get iClicker points and if you miss it hurts your grade. The lab section with a TA is worth 20% of your grade as well and that can make or break you. But overall, I liked Professor Hanssen and his class was manageable.
Very knowledgeable about economics, the TA you are assigned will definitely make or brake your experience. Overall, I was able to understand micro a lot better after taking his class. Tests come almost word-for-word from the study guides he gives out.
I loved Professor Hanssen! Lectures were interesting and he clearly cares about what hes talking about. You have to study for his tests but he literally gives you the exact questions that will be on the test to study with so it's really not that hard. Worst part about this class is the TA sections but that just depends on what TA you have.
There are multiple midterms during the semester, and each of them is of the same difficulty. There is a lot of reading and note-taking that is required. There is a TA meeting once every week where you will submit your homework and go over lectures from that week. There is also a daily iClicker poll at random times for attendance.
Prof. Hanssen is a great guy. The topics of the class aren't hard at all, the hard part are the exams, which are full of questions worded purposefully to confuse you. It's very discouraging when you understand the topics but your grade doesn't reflect it.
Andy is a great guy he keeps us engaged in lectures. iClicker is hard but doesnt count much for grades so don't be discouraged. I dont agree with his grading system. TA sections have to average to 75 so even if you do well that grade will go down. His practice questions got me through the class since the same questions are on the quizzes and exams.
his tests are all mcq and really hard. outlines of slides are posted but they're not identical to the ones he shows in class. TA's sessions are either great or won't help. large scale for B which is good. lectures only, they're okay. iclicker questions throughout class that go into your grade. he's hard & means well, but wouldn't want him again.
He seems like a good guy but I would not take him again. There are discussion sections with the TA every week and he averages the scores in there (scores based on a usual weekly quiz and hw) and brings it down to a class average of 75. My TA was good but I know others weren't. Tests were tought too but there were practice questions. Look elsewhere.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone that cares about getting high grades. Pro: 75 is a B. Cons: The TA section is curved down to a 75% average. If you don't get a good TA, its over. Tests are impossibly confusing. Take it from someone that studied for days and hours on end, the effort you put in will never be reflected in your performance.
While he is very knowledgeable in the subject the class was not the best. His grading system was awful where in mandatory TA led disscusion sections he would round grades down to a class average 75 The tests were also very confusing and were very hard. Sometimes studying felt useless because every question is that bad. Look elsewhere for a class.
Gives you the absolute bare minimum in class. If you don't teach yourself everything outside of class you will fail. TA sections suck too and he doesn't care that they aren't teaching you either. Terrible professor absolutely would never take again.
Nice guy and knowledgeable about economics, but definitely one of the harder teachers for this course, if not the hardest. Tests are worth the majority of your grade and uses iclicker questions for attendance of his lectures. 20% of our grade comes from the discussion section with a TA and it gets curved to have a 75% average. Take someone else!!!
Take a different professor. His lectures arent boring but they dont help much. Dont get the textbooks. Practice questions are exactly like the exams so honestly so through them all if possible. TA sections are rounded down to 75 so they bring down your grade. Only about 10 people can exempt his final. iClicker is hard but barely weighted.
