Math for Liberal Studies, he makes a boring subject even more boring, do not take his classes he is not an effective teacher and is honestly a rude and unhappy individual who should not be teaching. I read the reviews on here and decided to give it a shot anyway and I'm sorry I did.

he is discurteous toward his students & often resorts to outright screaming at students. of 3 (maybe 4) tests i got one failure and skipped his lectures thereafter to focus on reading the book and homework on blackboard. ended up getting a B+ on my own with zero help. his lectures tend to be downright boring & he often gives erroneous info. avoid.

This is a horrible professor and that is only because he teaches with his mouth and forgets things and goes back to it. This is all through hand gestures and few examples on the board maybe 2 the whole class. Spends most of his lectures proving mathematical concepts instead of teaching them. He can't do any of the problems he assigns, and can't even finish them in the alloted class time. If you are going to take a class with him, do the problems he doesn't assign. They will be on the test. And be ready to teach yourself. He needs to retire.

Extremely rude. not helpful at all and finds more pleasure in humiliating students in front of the class than actually teaching the class. although he doesnt require attendance and lets the students use a cheat sheet for tests it is still not worth taking his class. all around awful professor.

Unprepared. He takes whats in the textbook and tries to put his own spin on it and then gets lost and confused, which has horrific consequences to students trying to learn the material. He assigns homework and never posts or gives solutions. My advice: To pass, study your exams. the ones you got wrong... make sure you know them by the end.

Nice guy, but worst professor I've had at any level of schooling. He gets his own questions wrong on a regular basis and is awful at explaining things. Majority of the class is going to most likely fail. I'm a math guy and I barely have a C. Take yoga or walking instead. You won't be as confused.

Quite possibly the worst instructor I've ever had since 10th grade Algebra II. Dr. Hoffman gets lost in his own problems everyday without fail, gets irritated if you ask any questions he does not consider pertinent to his current lesson (if you can call it that), and oh god is he boring! You will most likely have to teach yourself much of what will be on the tests which are for the most part pretty straight-forward. Granted he does have daily quizzes which he goes over but overall I would avoid.

Did every bit of the home spent numerous hrs and $ on a tutor. professor teaches theory and all proofs to calc one students. Didnt learn anything from the instructor only frim a tutor and myself. I would not recommend this professor to anyone.

Very smart guy... too smart. Teaches Cal. 2 like if we are learning proofs. Test are easy to pass if you do HW. Attendance is not required. Gave 5 quizzes during a semester. Learn on your own. I would read the book in his class. Requires you to get an online code for a book (to do HW). I would not take him again.

You won't pass. I study, I take my classes seriously, and this semester has been great for me. All except this class. Discrete Mathematics by this guy is insane, asking for perfection in every way, and sometimes even that doesn't seem to be enough. I do the work, and bring that knowledge into class. it just isn't enough. Avoid this professor.

Hoffman is practically senile, shows up to class unprepared, gets confused, and mumbles. I don't know how this man is still teaching.

This man can't even get the practice problems right in class. He shouldn't be teaching. Hoffman becomes a petulant baby when confronted with a question he is unable to answer and treats students poorly. Confused would be a generous description of his demeanor. The textbook is equally unhelpful.

Hoffman teaching style is almost all proofs and he assumes everyone in the class should knows everything that he does. You've gotta figure out the material for yourself or already have a really good understanding of math to get his proofs. He was also absent for a 13 of the classes so far. I thought taking Hoffman would be ok... I was wrong.

The textbook Hoffman uses is HORRIBLE and he doesn't give out hw answers, so you never know if you are doing the problems correctly. And when he does go over the hw in class, the concept is still unclear. Every week is a quiz based on the hw, but then again, we don't know if we are doing the hw correctly! I don't know how you get through 10 sections of a chapter in 7 classes, but that's what Hoffman considers ambitious. It's easy for him to say since he writes proofs from the book, but every mistake someone points out feels more like your only hope is just reading the textbook. I wish he could've stopped rushing things.

Avoid this professor at all costs. This professor teaches by reciting theorems and doing proofs for those theorems that are in the book anyway. His lectures are worthless, totally worthless. You will end up reading entire book by yourself and do all homework as he never goes over problems. Be prepared to spend a lot of time self-teaching yourself.

Dr. Hoffman, an amazing professor of nothing. His class has made me question my major and lose faith in my mathematic abilities. He is extremely difficult, unhelpful, and unreasonable. His teaching is characterized by reiterating the text book. He places a heavy reliance upon self-teaching the material, as his expectations are very irrational.

If it weren't for our amazing TA, no one would've passed. He appears to be in the early stages of senility; twice within 5 minutes, he forgot what he was doing completely and upon figuring out what he was doing got upset because he was doing it wrong. Thinks he's amazing. Yelled at me once for smiling during class. A 0/5 choice needs to be made.

Worst professor I have ever had. He doesn't teach, he just reads verbatim from the textbook. Any example he shows on the board he'll make at least 7 mistakes and then blame the class. Lots of homework, super hard tests, and he's a very unfair grader. Horrible professor.

Gives a quiz, then when going over solutions fails to solve his own quiz problems correctly. Throws tantrum when people leave the class early, while failing to realize that people leave because he can't teach well. Makes many mistakes while teaching but i you make any on an assignment, there goes most of the points for the problem.

Has Alzheimer's. Grades on quizzes every class, quizzes may or may not have anything to do with sections you've learned. Lectures are impossible to follow, only 2 people passed. The department heads offered us a refund for the course, but couldn't do anything about the grades.

The worst professor I've had. Makes exams extremely difficult... so difficult even HE CANNOT SOLVE THEM IN CLASS (THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED)!!!! The syllabus is nonexistent. if you want to fight for your grade you have the misfortune of dealing with him even after the term ends. RUN. You've been warned.

If you value your sanity, stay far away from this class. There is literally no feedback on any assignment and the graders only grade certain questions so you can get everything right but two questions and if those are the ones, thats half your grade. The professor makes the class so difficult he cant even solve his own equations. Please run far.

Math WAS my best subject prior to taking his class. I've never gotten less than an A. I even tutored math all throughout high school. BUT HE DOESNT TEACH ANYTHING. He gives you a pdf textbook, which thanks because its free, but then expects you to learn from that. His tests are harder than worksheets. He is the worst professor I've ever had. 0/10.

Only take him if you really don't have any other option (even distance learning is a better alternative). Because you are gonna be by yourself. Math Major with 4.0 . I beg of you, do not take this professor. You are paying for nothing and to probably fail. Cant work his own problems and moves on, then expects you to know it on the exam, which consists of many topics he will not teach you. Homeworks also has topics you will have never seen and wont. Critical typos on all exams and hws.

Don't take him for any reason whatsoever. All around a terrible experience. He doesn't even teach, and he is extremely rude. Very discouraging of students. When you don't understand something, he laughs at you and refuses to talk about it anymore.

This guy is the worst teacher I've ever had, not even exaggerating here, take it from someone who has never gotten below a B+ in a math class. He always came late and got mad at us when we came late. He doesn't take criticism well at all. Then he gives you 6-8 questions on a test to complete in 50 mins, when he takes 30-40 mins to do just ONE.

I have had some bad professors but let me tell you. His course takes self teaching to a whole new level. All the homework is due before he actually teaches the lecture. All the tests are graded poorly by him because you either met "his" standard or you get it wrong. Please DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS TEACHER!! Terrible teacher.

I really wished I listened to everyone in these reviews. I'm in too deep and can no longer back out of this class. I should have done so after the first test. Worst professor in FAU. Go head and take him if you're one of those students that don't care about their grades or think that any professor even when they're the worst of the worst are "all right." The amazing thing is that I've heard some people say he's not that bad. They did not get good grades, so don't be saying BS.

Hoffman is extremely knowledgeable in all things math, but he has no clue how to teach. He gets caught up in the details and never explains why were doing certain things because he assumes you know everything about discrete maths. If you're comfortable with teaching yourself or never getting answers to any questions asked then feel free to take him

Dr. Hoffman is by far the absolute worst professor there is. He is an 80-something yr/old man who does not know how a computer works. He will introduce dozens of topics in lecture and test on the only topics not introduced in lecture. He assumes everyone in the class is also a mathematics PhD so he never takes any time to explain anything in detail

Took him a month to input our final grades, I couldn't register for a class in the spring because my grade for this pre-req was not submitted to the school. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!

dont do it! i felt bad for every one of his students. grades harshly, with unclear criteria, and is not uniform across all students. hard to access outside of class. handwriting is shaky and unclear. bad at explaining!! does not even treat his LAs (assistants/ people who work for him) well. not sure why he is not retired!!

Letures are useless, quizzes are difficult and given every day on what you just learned. more than half the class dropped. Do not take this guy.

In all my years of schooling, from elementary to high school to college. This is genuinely the worst teacher/ professor I've ever had. I have never written a review on this website. But for Mr Hoffman I had to. He is a tough grader, and never answers his emails, his lectures make no sense and are pointless. Avoid at all costs.
