He made me interested in cognitive sciences, and he is muy caliente!! (code-switching)
Dr. Aldama played a pivotal role in shaping my career. His approach, cognitive narratology,is a breath of fresh air after the obsure rant that clutters postcolonial studies. My only issue with the course was that we did not cover all the texts as thoroughly as we should have. However, he is very approachable, encouraging and flexible. Take his class
He is very personable and friendly to students, and he is very helpful and flexible. He talks pretty quietly so sometimes it's hard to pay attention. Somewhat tough grader on papers. Overall, the class is interesting and Prof Aldama is a good professor
He was absolutely wonderful. He relates to his students very well. He respects everyone and listens to all opinions.
Professor Aldama is wonderfully brilliant. He is kind and interested in his students. Very soft spoken and has the most interesting reading/video selections of any English Professor I've ever experienced.
cool guy, if you're interested in narratology def. check him out.
Professor Aldama is very personable and friendly. He puts forth a good effort to make his class interesting. He didn't moderate our class discussions well, and they seemed to have little direction. I didn't learn much from the class.
The class overall was good. Getting into the world of Mexican film was probably one of my more enjoyable classes at OSU. That said, while he is helpful and insightful in discussions, he grades pretty hard. I spent a lot of time on the papers and still got a C in the class, though I felt like I did a lot better work than that.
A very friendly and caring person. But after a semester of reading his book of truisms and participating in pointless discussions (when he didn't cancel class), post-structuralism begins to look pretty fascinating once again. Aldama is an interesting guy but not an intellectually stimulating professor.
This was an exelent class on Mexican Film Studies. Dr. Professor Frederick Aldama is an exceptional presenter of this material and an expert in the field. His classes are very engaging and fun to attend. Classes held in the Gateway Film Center. The way film classes should be taught. Great choice of films. Highly recommend this professor and class.
Professor Aldama is a very friendly and caring guy as well as an intellectually challenging professor. He sees the big picture and is concerned with preparing students not only to receive a good grade in the class, but for their college careers and further pursuits in life. He is an expert in the field of Mex-Ciné and is so helpful!
I really enjoyed Professor Aldama's class! I had no interest in comics going into this class, and I finished with such an appreciation for the medium. Lecture was primarily driven by discussion between the students and the professor. There was a paper due every week, but they were informal and easy as long as you did the assigned homework.
I went into this course contemplating if i'd want to pursue a career in storytelling. I thought people who did were born creative and smart, but this class exposed me to how fiction is formed by diverse people. I'll now go after a career in storytelling. The class is student-friendly. You think, show your creativity without pressure. + environment!
Professor Aldama was an inspirational professor, he is a true professional of his field. Class meetings were bi-weekly and discussion-based. Therefore, attendance and participation were expected but class material was evenly distributed and interesting. Highly recommend taking one of his classes, it was an excellent analytical writing experience!
This is a MUST TAKE class for students interested in film or comics. Class teaches how comics & Film are structured (narrative, images, colors, style, text, drawings, flow). Comics (Sin City, Superman, Scott Pilgrim, Iron Man, Wanted, Incredible Hulk, Persepolis) How film directors like Nolan and Rodriguez turn a comic into a film. Great Professor!!
Professor Aldama is a spectacular teacher of film. He taught his course in a way that stimulates all aspects of academic thinking while drawing upon his vast pool of knowledge on the subject. Lectures were engaging and enjoyable if you bothered to show up, and he didn't waste time and energy with petty quizzes.
This professor was electric! Engaging, contemporary, witty, sharp as a tact. Everyone in class loved his lectures, and his reading assignments were awesome. We actually looked forward to reading the text, actually looked forward towards class, eager to talk about the text we read. Knock out class, knock out professor!
Great professor. Super knowledgable and top of his field in Latinx Studies. He was super helpful, super insightful. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Every class included an open, spirited discussion on the films viewed followed by close analyses of sequences from the respective films viewed. Attention was constantly on the art of film-making and on their various sociopolitical meanings. As with the 4 other courses Ive taken with Aldama, if ranked on a 1-10 scale, this ones an 11+.
Approaches fiction and entertainment media from a number of different vantage points and disciplines (sociological, psychological, cognitive, race/gender, etc. ). Intends for the class to question the influence of art on society and vice versa. Attentive to his students, great feedback on papers, always willing to talk, and incredible energy!
Participation matters for sure, so stay on top of reading requirements (especially theory readings). Really passionate about teaching and loves to connect with students individually even when class is 70 students large.
Awesome professor, and one of the most enjoyable classes I've taken in my time at OSU. Does a great job at taking moral, ethical, and social issues and showing how these topics/ideas are portrayed and interpreted through narrative, art and film. Do the readings, watch the films, and PARTICIPATE and you'll have an open forum to discuss anything.
From the very first day Professor Aldama's lectures were amazing. His class truly keeps you interested and engaged. If you participate a lot in class (meaning discussion-not just showing up) it will show in your final grade. Be sure to make enough time to read and watch the movies. This class was awesome!
Professor Aldama is one of the most caring professors I have ever encountered on this campus. His lectures are really cool because they help to open your mind to a new viewpoint of media. There are various texts to read but most of them are comics and film studies. AMAZING PROFESSOR, take any class you can with him!!!
He is awesome! I took his Comic Book class and his lectures were easily understandable and you don't even need any knowledge about comics. He is very good about being open for questions and talking about anything you need. Very understanding and accommodating- I would definitely take another one of his classes
Dr. Aldama was a great professor, my favorite at Ohio State. He keeps class interesting and exciting and has a great sense of humor. There are no quizzes only 3 essays. I highly recommend this class with Dr. Aldama. If you attend every class and takes notes this is an easy A.
Dr. Aldama is an incredible professor. The lectures were interesting and kept students involved. Dr. Aldama genuinely cares about his students and their learning experience. As long as you attend class and do the work it'll be am enjoyable experience. I look forward to taking more of his classes!
Not only a great professor but a great guy 2. Aldama did an amazing job at guiding you to see things from a different perspective, something all successful college classes should do. My only regret is that I didn't start talking to him before/after class sooner. This 'Gen Ed' was the most enjoyable I've ever taken! Discussions were always engaging.
Hands down one of the best professors I have had at Ohio State. Dr. Aldama genuinely cares about his students and takes time before, after, and during class to ask us how we are doing. Lecture material is interesting and the class overall was great. 10/10 would recommend this course to anyone.
Dr. Aldama is one of the most passionate teachers at Ohio State that I have come across. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to film and always keeps class interesting. Would recommend taking any class with Aldama teaching it.
Dr. Aldama goes above and beyond as a professor in his lectures (which were held in a theatre at Gateway), and in his relationship with students. This class had the perfect balance of film theory, exposure to major works in the history of cinema, and engagement. Highly recommended that anyone with in movies and entertainment culture.
I believe that Dr. Aldama has been one of the most influential professors that I have had in my first year at Ohio State. He has done a wonderful job of broadening my knowledge of film studies. It is evident that he is an expert in his field, and that he is wonderful at expressing his love for film to his students.
I was new to studying film before this semester and I had some doubts about how I would perform, but Doctor Aldama's intriguing lectures, diligent feedback and charismatic passion made it feel natural. If you ever have the chance to take one of Doctor Aldama's classes, DO IT. He's an amazing professor and I couldn't recommend him highly enough.
I took Dr. Aldama's Intro to Film class--incredible experience, he is that extremely rare professor that is both cool and challenges you intellectually/morally. Deeply expanded my appreciation of film from social and technical angles. Grades papers fairly--nicely actually--take this class even if you're not majoring in something related, Art GE
I am a CSE Major and this Film Studies class was a breath of fresh air. The topics we covered were amazingly interesting and Dr. Aldama's lectures got me thinking in a unique way. The lectures were full of humor as well. He is passionate about his subject matter and cares deeply about students as individuals. Take his Class!!
Dr. Aldama made my first semester at Ohio State tremendous experience. He displays great enthusiasm and creativity. I learned about the deeper meaning of film and what the director is trying to present to each audience. I recommend his class to any major for that matter due to the valuable skills you will enhance or pick up.
Dr. Aldama is a standout professor, he cares about his student and strives to make the class accessible to anyone interested in taking it. You don't need to have extensive knowledge of film coming in, he does a great job of explaining and relating different nuances of the genre. His grading policy is very fair, and showing up to class is important.
Professor Aldama is an extremely passionate, knowledgeable instructor. I looked forward to going to his lectures, and all the course material we viewed was superb. His syllabus is straightforward. there were no surprises. One of the best, if not THE best teacher Ive ever had at OSU.
Awesome teacher! Loves what hes teaching and cares about his students. Dr. Aldama is very open to opinions he doesnt agree with so its very easy to feel comfortable and get involved in class discussions. Would definitely take this class again!
He is a great professor, really enjoyed taking his class. Pretty straight forward, 3 essays, attendance grade and extra credit. Should be an easy A if you attend class and participate.
prof aldama is a great teacher, very smart and passionate about topic. class is lecture and essay based. would definitely take again!
I highly recommend taking this class! Every class is focused on a new film or comic and Aldama provides a classroom where it is a safe environment to discuss and analyze new mediums! I entered every class and was able to put everything aside to enjoy a very thorough inspirational discussion!
Honestly, this is very easy A class. He is very knowledgable. No quiz, no midterms, no finals. Just three papers, 25% each, and 25% just on attendance, which you might consider not to skip the class. He is very genuine and kind, and give many extra credits. Someone you can negotiate if you have problem, which might be rare since he is easy grader.
The class was great and the content was very interesting to learn about! Dr. Aldama is a great professor and cares about his students even outside of classroom. He gives out a good amount of extra credit if you go to certain events on campus. He made me appreciate comics and film on a whole new level!
Dr. Aldama is an amazing professor! He is so considerate and understanding of you as a student both in and outside of the classroom. His lectures are very interesting and the material provided keeps you intrigued! He also gives a good amount of extra credit that consists of fun events on campus! The class was great and I would overall recommend it!
I can truthfully say that this class was one of the most interesting, entertaining, intriguing, and eye-opening ones I have ever taken. I had never even considered picking up a comic prior to my enrollment in this course, and although I was skeptical at first, it turned out to be one of my best decisions. This class is fun, enlightening, and 10/10.
Aldama is the best professor that I've ever had! Class is accessible to student's needs, lectures are dynamic & enjoyable. I'm taking more classes with him because he's that great. Students who disagree are usually not open-minded or have skewed views of what classes should be like. Easy A if you show up & engage which he makes easy to do. 5/5!!!
Dr. Aldama is an excellent professor and knows his craft. I found his course on film and comics with an examination on gender, race, and differently-abled to be helpful on seeing different viewpoints on how media is formed for a perceived audience. I would take this professor again and I recommend anyone to take his courses.
Awesome class!! We covered a lot of important topics regarding superhero films and comics, including where they should be celebrated and critiqued. The class is called "Film & Comics: Race, Class, Sexuality, and Differently Abled" so be aware of the course content. We had GREAT, intelligent discussions and I actually enjoyed writing the papers.
Professor Aldama is fantastic. Not only did we get to read/watch list of fun and intriguing literature and films, but he encouraged us to unpack the underlying issues in the text. Hes fantastic at guiding conversation and getting his students to think about the bigger picture, without dragging down the class. I WANTED to go to lecture.
Dr. Aldama is an amazing professor and person. He has made his English class extremely fun and interesting because of the topics covered and the materials that are analyzed. Throughout the semester there was several extra credit opportunities given for attending events on campus. I would recommend this class to everyone.
Very few words can describe just how extraordinary and exceptionally brilliant Dr. Aldama is. Without question, there are genuinely few other instructors at The Ohio State University who are as passionately driven to teach and connect with students as him. I've taken 3 of his undergrad courses, and yet I'm still eager to learn even more from him.
Dr. Aldama is an outstanding professor. Using pop culture, he provides accessible, thought-provoking materials representing many perspectives. He expertly coaxes students beyond the boundaries of their current knowledge. The course materials, guest speakers, lecture and discussion topics show his commitment to the subject matter and the students.
Professor Aldama is without question one of the finest professors I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. He's passionate about improving his students, dedicated to the quality of his classes, and eminently knowledgeable about his subject. An absolute gem, I'd take a class with him even if it was outside of my degree program.
The class addresses controversial topics within films and comic books so be ready to get a bit out of your comfort zone, however you will always be able to voice your opinion regarding your political and social views. The content is really fun, a lot of great movies and comics and the class lets you explore and question views on these topics.
Professor Aldama was one of the best professors I have had the pleasure of taking their class. The class is mandatory participation, but you wont want to miss it anyways. The films and comics were an interesting topic to begin with, and the subjects we covered in class made it that more entertaining. Hes also very kind and understanding!
Very fun and easy class! Just be sure to understand all of the requirements for the essays.
I took this class for a general education course. It was a great class and the professor is great. He is really interested in what he teaches and it shows when he talks in class. There are 3 essays to write, but other than that there is no homework. As long as you show up and do the few essays, you should get an A.
Dr. Aldama is one the best professors I've had at Ohio State. Really cares about his students and the subject matter he is teaching. I highly recommend taking any course offered by him.
The introduction to film class is a great combination of being interesting and an easy A class. Professor Aldama is clearly very knowledgable but isn't judgmental if you don't know anything about film. I highly recommend this class. Especially if you're in a STEM major and want a GE outside of your field.
This was an excellent class! The professor shows genuine excitement and passion for the course, and the material is interesting and relevant. It will really open your eyes to the intricacies of film-making and how it relates to society in general. Discussions are interesting, and the professor shows that he cares about his students.
Hes a very knowledgeable, fun, and genuine professor. You watch a ton of movies in his class (19 to be specific). He cares about the students and makes you think in a challenging, but not miserably challenging way.
I would definetly recommand my friends who's interested in films to take this course. The professor is so nice and caring, I got a lot help from him! Everything in this class is interesting, and all we have to do is to write three film analyze papers focusing on what we learned.
He is a really nice professor! If you want to have an A for this course, you just need to attend and ask him for the paper before submitting. He will let you know, "If you study hard, you will earn a great grade". Just ask more and do more for your paper! He will not make you feel bad!
Professor Aldama truly cares about his students and teaching them the art of film and cares more about actually understanding concepts over constant worrying about tests and quizzes, definitely recommend this class and teacher!
Professor Aldama is one of the best professors I have had so far at OSU. His passion for film is inspiring and he really cares for his students. The lectures and recitation are fun and very interesting. 10/10 would recommend!
Cannot express how much this professor cares about his students. GET TO KNOW HIM. He is incredibly helpful if you know him and talk to him regularly, but it's hard for him to help you if he doesn't know who you are. I enjoyed this class so much, the content was relevant and interesting, and the class was very enjoyable. Can't recommend him enough.
Dr. Aldama is absolutely the best professor at OSU. This is the only class Ive ever had where the professor, material and lectures are all extremely enjoyable. Not only are the lectures interesting and fun to go to, you also learn a lot about all of the topics covered. Dr. Aldama is so great and I recommend everyone to take one of his classes.
One of the best professors I have ever had. He actually cares about the students and works hard to make the lectures interesting and interactive. Need to read the book in order to fully understand the lectures and do well on the papers (a large percentage of the grade). I would recommend this class to anyone.
Took Intro to Film with Prof. Aldama and it was EASILY my favorite class of the semester. You won't fail by skipping class, but you should go to the lectures anyways because he's an amazing and engaging lecturer, even with over 100 students. I learned so much, and go to office hours to get to know him personally! AWESOME dude.
Great professor, show up to class and try on the papers and you will do well
very understanding, and eager to see his students succeed!!
You have to go to lecture for TopHat credit that uses your location to assure you're on site, decent amount of your grade. Prof. Aldama is one of the most passionate profs on campus, by far my favorite. Also brought/skyped in some directors for class that give you connections/internship/experience opportunities. Take it. Fun, easy and enjoyable.
I highly recommend any student at The Ohio State University to take a class with Professor Aldama. Not only is he extremely kind, passionate and knowledgeable about film and the material he teaches, but he is able to teach class in a way that you can apply what you learn not only to cinema but to other art forms as well as insight in to the self.
Professor Aldama is super excited about the material and makes lecture fun. Outside of class he is easy to talk to and genuinely cares about getting to know his students. The grade consists of attendance, homework quizzes (open book and mad easy to get 100%), and 3 papers that are easy As as long as you meet all the requirements. Take the class!
Aldama wants you to get an A. Besides the hard work you have to put in for the three papers, the class is pretty light but still enjoyable and he chooses very good movies to watch and talk about
Prof. ALDAMA IS A GREAT PROFESSOR, the class was excellent overall, and hes very personable and relatable. This is the best class I have taken at OSU so far. The assignments and movies are fun to do and watch respectively.
Dr. Aldama is a wonderful professor. His lectures are long and can be boring sometimes but he really tries to make them enjoyable. The class is graded on only 3 papers but as long as you include everything in your paper you can pass with a B. He gives multiple extra credit opportunities too.
Professor Aldama is one of those rare professors that lets you know right away that he cares about the material he's teaching, and he especially cares about how that material is passed on to his students. His lectures are so riveting in that they engage both film fans and the average person. Regardless of who you are, you'll enjoy his class!
Dr. Aldama genuinely cares about his students and gives very engaging lectures that facilitate extremely productive class discussions. The movies he chooses are refreshingly very diverse in their content. The reading/paper load is very manageable and standard for any 2000 level English class. 10/10 would take a class with this professor again!
Super nice guy and he is super passionate about what he really he teaches. The course load was a lot but it was all interesting comics and superhero movies so it was fun. I would definitely take a class from him again.
I would recommend taking one of his courses to ANYONE. No matter what major you are, every person can find something to be excited about in class. He's a very easygoing guy and loves all participation. He gives great feedback on the papers you write, and I always enjoyed writing about Marvel! One of my favorite English professors! Also offers EC!
My fav professor so far! Very passionate and super dope
Dr Aldama is an amazing professor. If you listen during lectures you will definitely pass the class. the papers are fairly graded and He really tries to make the lectures more like a discussion which is really nice as well. Overall amazing class!
His explanations of analyzing movies and/or concepts in lecture are very specific and beneficial so that when you have to do the papers, you can effectively formulate your thesis and create a substantial argument! Makes the class fun or enjoyable even though it is kind of lecture heavy.
Professor Aldama's class is amazing. I was originally taking the class to receive credits for my minor and I ended up declaring an English major. His lectures are amazing and you can see the true passion he has for the subject. Not to mention his many outside resources to help engage students like his podcast and Sõl-Con.
I have had this professor for two classes and would take a class with him again without question. He really cares about his students and about the subject matter. Everyones opinions is valued. Even in giant lectures he tries to get to know his students.
Professor Aldama is passionate about what he does. This passion shows through in the way he engages with course content and student ideas in a classroom space. Aldama pushes students to think outside the box about intersectionality through the comic book medium. This class definitely changed the way that I view movies and read comics.
Few lecture heavy courses find a good way to keep students engaged with the material. This course and especially this professor never cease to do so. Students that never spoke once in the first few lectures when asked questions were active contributors to discussion by the end. Professor Aldama does a near flawless job encouraging student growth.
Honestly an all around awesome class. I had the opportunity to learn so much about movies and the intricacy that they come with. Would take this class again, it made me appreciate the art of film.
Amazing professor! Very charismatic. Lectures are very informative and funny. As long as you put in the work, you will pass the class with an A. I agree with most everything he says, but Joaquin Phoenix tops Heath Ledger for me ;) .
If you show that you want to learn he help you. The papers are more about learn then grading. Vary interesting if you want to learn a little about film.
Dr. Aldama is so funny! He makes an effort to know all of his 150± students' names. He goes easy on the grading of your paper if he knows you do well in the course. Try your best and make an effort to get to know him!
This class is fantastic, and he does a great job making his lectures informative and fun. You can tell that he cares about his students and the subject. However, your final grade is only made up of three papers, attendance, and quizzes, so going to class is critical. Overall, this is a great course if you're interested in film
Professor Aldama is the best film professor I've ever had the privilege of learning from. He is amazingly wise and very approachable. Every lecture was filled with useful film advice and tips. 10/10 would recommend!
Professor Fredrick Aldama is the first-ever professor to actually care about his students. Since the class is very large, due take your time to introduce yourself at any point during the semester. Professor Aldama made my first-year at OSU very memorable. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANY CLASS THAT HE TEACHES. - NMW
great class. Really easy visual arts credit if you're not an artistic person.
A prof so good, he has me doing my Borat impression. Very Nice!
i love this man
Professor Aldama was extremely knowledgeable and chose great movies to analyze and relate to the Latinx community.
The most accommodating professor for COVID-19 that Ive had this semester. He always has extra credit options and structures assignments as to reduce stress. He really wants to have a genuine conversation with the class instead of just telling us what to think. His classes have been my favorite so far at OSU!
Great professor, super knowledgable, interesting discussions, and really accommodating to COVID-19. We had to write one reflection per week on the material and that was it.
Great teacher would absolutely take again!
Granted I took Professor Aldamas class during COVID-19, but even then I very much enjoyed his class. He struck the perfect balance between weekly assignments and a generally laid-back, discussion-centric lecture style. He was always understanding and caring about what was happening in our lives and flexible should anything happen outside of school
Amazingly caring, brilliant and humble.
