Fred Phelps was the worst professor ever. He should not be allowed to teach.
teaches you how to do physics wrong, then gets mad if you try to do it right
never, ever take

horrible
everything takehome...got me an A
He's Crazy! and he loves the chalkboard
He's a very sweet and helpful man
HORRIBLE!!! mean man
Nice guy, you can tell he's going cenile
Teaches intro to physical science like it's physics 800. Mean & Unfair.

Worst teacher I've ever had. Do not take him!
musical accoustics, sounds fun, DON'T DO IT. talks about his dead dog...all the time.

Worst human being I have ever met. Gave my friend a -17 on a assignment worth 10 points.

teaches un-usefull info. makes many mistakes on the board working out problems that students have to point out, never take what he says seriously always look at the syllabus to find how to do the problems,
You would think a take home test would be easy but his grading is unfair, the questions are vague and open to interpretation that he wont accept, will not accept arguments and will ridicule you when wrong or right. Evil mean man, why is he still teaching&
He is too old to be teaching...he babbles on all class about stupid stories no one cares about. You pretty much have to teach yourself physics... Plus he is very rude and tries to make you feel stupid.

This class is horrible. If you have to take PHY 130, be sure to take it with someone else. Hard to figure out what the man is talking about, impossible grader
The man knows what he's talking about but he has no idea how to get his ideas across clearly. If you work hard you can pass his class but I recommend getting a different professor for PHY 130.
fairly ridiclous teacher. only give flat grades ( like a C instead of a C+ or C-). I thought it was funny that the people i helped in that class did better than i did. oh well, if you dont like physic and have to take this class get another teacher.
totally unclear...does not teach.. gets up there and starts blabbing about useless stuff and expects you to know everything there is to know about physics. SERIOUSLY do NOT take this guy, it will save you much stress.
I thought that he was a professor that needed to retire. He was a very hard teacher to get along with, and graded hard too. I wouldn't recommend taking him.
Hands down the worst professor I ever had. He didn't even have office hours, and would only meet grudgingly. He just couldn't understand why we weren't as smart as the students in his class in 1980. Avoid. Avoid! AVOID!
Prof. Phelps is not a good professor. He really does make fun of students when questions are asked and doesnt seem to care at all whether his students are gathering the information. If you decide to take this course with him dont expect interaction.
Phelps sucks...plain and simple. He is not willing to help you out and goes as far as to humiliate you in front of the class. He expects so much of you, but yet he screws up constantly on the board. He doesn't believe in partial credit what-so-ever.
He isn't the easiest teacher but he gives good advice on how to study for his class. He also gives take home exams and one 10pt quiz every Thursday that comes directly out of your notes, which he lets you use for it. Take notes and get a study group!
Yes, lectures are tough. But quizes are open note, tests are take home. How can you not get atleast a B if you make an effort? Plus, go to his office any time and he is VERY willing to help.
He was horrible, couldn't teach and didn't know how to answer questions.

Stupid man! Screws up every day, only to try and fix his mistakes the next day. I want to throw my she at him!
Probably the worst class I have taken yet! I feel stupid every day when I leave the class. Goes off on tangents and won't explain anything to you. Hope you get a TA if you have this class, they were the only thing that saved me.
duuuuuuuude this class was terrible. I never missed a class and it was every day of the week. ended up getting a failing grade. if you have to take it, find another prof. if you have to have Phelps, then find a good study group.
thee worst teacher i have ever had, anyone interested in signing a petition for him to finally retire? he's had many mental lapses and its time
i didn't understand ANYTHING that was going on in this class, but i had a good study group, and turned in my papers OVER AND OVER again... walked away with an A. you won't learn anything, but you'll pass.
The worst professor at Central - two words to describe him: arrogant & cocky. Went to the head of the department. They said they get complaints every semester, and they talk to him after every compliant, but there's nothing they can do...he's tenured. Only thing I learned was how NOT to teach!
Worst teacher I have ever had. There are take home tests but if you're off by the smallest amount you'll lose almost all of your points. He won't explain anything and expects everyone to be a physics genius. The only thing that saved me was my study group so take it with some one you know.
He's helpful if you ask, but his lectures are very boring. He tries to make jokes, but only the students in the front row laugh, usually. He's not the worst prof i've had; he speaks english, and tries hard to pass his students, i'm not learning a whole lot by copying classwork (with different numbers) for take-home tests and quizzes, tho.
This class sucked. He doesn't explain anything and expects you to have learned everything in high school. The 9 question test took everyone the full two hours plus some time and he took off points for a mistake HE made. Not a nice man, he laughs at you if you do something wrong and makes you feel really stupid. Thank god for the TA's.
Worst prof at cmu
thank god for tutors. go to the dow computer room monday to thursday from 6 to 10. they can help you. phelps goes through hw problems if asked. dont forget a unit or be off on notation. you will get no points. he will always bring up his dead dog ginger.
The worst professor I have ever had at CMU! He makes fun of you and he makes you feel really stupid. He grades unfarly on tests by giving you less/more points if he likes you. A 92% is a B in his class. Do not take this prof!
You're almost guaranteed to learn nothing. You may get an A if you can take percise notes and find a test problem exactly like it in your notes. I'd suggest trying to get someone else.
Worst teacher at CMU! He only talks to the first 2 rows. Used to teach at UofM and still thinks he teaches there. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, YOU WILL FAIL!!!
Drab, boring, plays fav. in a class of at least 100, mumbles a lot, only goes thru problems w/o explaination, and expects you to devote life to learning phy. Expects you to have the same problems with physics that he did, so he explains that aspect for the entire hour. Up-side is everything is take home, but the 92.9%= B makes that not matter.
Granted, Physics is a really hard class, but some days he makes it even harder. He means well, he really does. He is a nice ol' man. However, his grading scale is extremely strict. Does not give + or - grades. This meaning a 92% is a B! Work hard, you may do alright. Lots of take home exams. Encourages group work, but still REALLY hard to do well.
Yes, physics is a hard course. But he makes it almost impossible to learn because he messes up a porblem that took him the whole class to do and then goes "oops, thats not right" and stares at the board for 5 min until the class is over. Then he teaches another way to do the same problem the next day. Too hard to remember which way is right.
People complain about Phelps, but truely if you're willing to put in effort (group studying, FREE tutoring) you'll get an A. Everything is take home or open book and if you go to the Tutors you'll get an A. downside is his grading scale, but he curves like crazy.
His grading scale is ridiculous and he makes fun of students for getting wrong answers. Physics isn't easy for many people and he forgets that. It's almost impossible to get an A in that class...so be ready to either get a B or C.
He is boring and unable to explain anything. He spent the first half of the semester on basic science concepts such as experimental procedure. We barely even talked about acoustics.
His tests are rediculous and he will give 0 points for detailed answers if one little thing is wrong. Sometimes makes fun of students to their faces. Expect to be really frustrated, and read all parts of questions before answering because you might have to do Part B before Part B!
If you can avoid taking this class....DO!!!! He is a picky little jerk who doesn't even tell you how to do something. Then he will mark you down for not doing it.....EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T KNOW!!!!
Horrible Horrible Horrible. Gives practically no credit on test with answers that are not %100 correct. Avoid this class at all costs!!
worst prof ever!!!
This man is definetly the worst professor i've ever had. It is impossible to please that man. If you ask for help he will make you feel like a complete idiot. I left his office crying one time. Anyways if you have to take him go to SI whenever you can and find a study group to do the tests and homework with. Otherwise AVOID!!!
This professor has so many bad reviews! BUT...if you take this class and study his take home tests.. you'll come out thinking other professors' homework and tests are for elementary kids..literally. You learn REAL conceptual things so the physics MCAT looks like a joke. If you plan on being a doctor...TAKE PHELPS or forever be below others.
The class is overall not that bad.I DEFINITELY recommend having a study group for the homework, I would have failed with out one. He is really stingy about partial credit, but his quizzes are straight from the notes. He rambles way too much and it can be annoying.I probably put about 4 hours into the homework a week and the exams at least 8-10 hours
DO NOT TAKE! He just talks about his dead dog Ginger, He makes fun of you if you dont understand the material, I study everynight go to his office hours and still fail his tests. Sure quizes are open book you will pass but as for the test you will FAIL even though they are take home I did not listen to the other people on this site and i wish i did
DO Not take him as your Physics teacher. He does not give partial credit on anything no matter what. He also takes points off of your exams if you do the extra credit wrong. He is also very rude if you confront him about something.
Smart guy, I'll give him that, but he thinks that if you don't understand the concepts your an idiot. I went into his office hours for help once and he was a complete jackass. Work in groups and you should do okay. BUT Phelps gives NO partial credit, so make sure EVERYTHING is correct. Avoid if possible, but you will survive if need be.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!! He grades everyone's tests differently. Never gives partial credit. Does not teach physics well. I learned nothing last semester
I loathed this man. You could understand the material completely, go about taking the test and get a bad grade because you did not use the proper graph paper or did not carry out as many digits as he liked. He is very set in his ways because he is a tenured professor and as such has been criticized for his methods by students. All in all, avoid!!!!
the guy never taught. you're expected to learn from the book
I am a 3.9 student. I had a D- in his class before I dropped. I would rather walk a mile through broken glass than ever have to talk to this man again.
Awful teacher. He doesn't teach the concepts associated with physics. When you go to his office hours for help he'll make you sit and wait while he takes personal calls then he talks down to you. He will mark correct answers wrong if he doesnt think in his opinion you knew how to do it. Take any other physics teacher.
WORST TEACHER OF MY LIFE!!!! I have had some pretty bad teachers this man by far was the worst I would never take another class with him if my life depended on it. If you have him drop it soon.
If you have Phelps, be prepared to teach yourself physics. As everyone else has said he gives no partial credit so don't be surprised to get a lot of zeros on quizzes or test questions. Only benefit of taking him is that you get take home exams, which is good only if you know what you're doing.
I love Dr. Phelps! if you take the time to go to his office hours, he will help you with anything you need! He helps a lot with homework and even exam questions. he does tend not to teach much during class but he makes up for it during office hours!
This class took up a lot of my time. I got A's in 130/131. You need to utilize office hours but all of his tests are take home and he re-uses them from past years. Find a group that suits you well and you CAN get an A. He offers between 50-100 points extra credit on every exam and the quizzes every Thursday are straight from the notes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! The class seems like it will be easy on the first day because you get take home exams, open note quizzes and most of the homework problems done for you in class. However, since Phelps does everything different than the book and doesn't explain things you will not learn anything. Which means the exams suck. AVOID!!!
I am completely lost in this class. I've never taken a physics class and considering the fact that I want to go into music, i thought musical acoustics would be an awesome class. i have not learned a thing and i feel like i'm failing. thank goodness for the credit/no credit option..
Worst prof ever. Class was a lab it had little to do with actual physics. If you followed his instructions perfectly he would still tell you it is wrong and walk away without explaining a bit. Don't take him if you can help it!
this guy is horrible. his lectures are pointless, he doesnt know how to use a computer so good luck getting your grade. He doesnt answer questions in class. I made appointments to see him in his office and he only showed for 1 0f 3. He builds on the easy material in the book to make them tougher.DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!
I've had this professor twice now for two different classes and he tries to teach the exact same material. He told us in class that he expects us to learn it on our own, and he expects that we will fail. With having a open note, open book and partner test and the class average was 51% DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
I think he's well past his prime, mentally speaking. But he is a really nice guy and made sure to help us in any way possible. In office ours, going over hmwk in class, giving extra-credit. Open note exams, with questions often coming straight from lecture or Homework.
This is the most terrible professor I ever had. Refuses to answer questions. He has admitted many times he does not know how to do some of the homework problems. The average on the open book tests are always about 50 percent. I have gotten all A's in college and got a C in this class. He will not curve tests. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!!
Short and simple: you teach yourself physics. Do not have him as your teacher.
Worst professor I've ever had. I took physics in high school and got an A. Taking him, I thought that maybe college physics was just more difficult. But I needed the physics credit, so I took the class with a different prof and got an A. It really is him! He really shouldn't be teaching anymore.
Absolute worst professor any one in college could ever take. He does absolutely nothing to help the students. Half of what he "teaches" had nothing to do with the class. I actually tried to go in to his office hours to ask for help, but after one question he smiled, laughed, and turned his back on me. Overall he's rude and the most useless profesor
I'm a 3.5 gpa student and I dropped this course because of that man behind the podium. He's the most unreasonable, arrogant man I may possibly have ever met. Overall a useless professor that takes advantage of his paycheck. Do NOT take any class he is associated with. I wasted around $1,500 because I didn't read his ratings. Learn from my mistake.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The exams are a load of crap. He doesn't teach anything that's on it and we would spend a whole class talking about two equations that we he openly admitted we didn't have to learn. He lost my first exam, didn't come to class because he "lost track of time." I withdrew from this class as fast as I could. He's horrible.
Horrible teacher. Avoid at all costs. He writes all the exams himself, so they are filled with errors. You teach yourself the class. And he talks about his dead dog Ginger constantly and uses her in 75% of the exam questions.
I do not recommend this professor. He often mumbles, so it is very hard to take notes, and he does not follow the book. He is very disorganized, and when he looses your papers, he holds you accountable. He is also very unreachable, since he does not use his email or blackboard. This class is set for the student to fail, and is very stressful.
Took him for physics in sports many years ago, and he was HORRIBLE. Absolutely horrible. How I wound up with a B in there was this: I taught myself, and got my hands on a practice exam. Outside of that, he was useless then.
