She was very friendly. Knows a lot about music. She passed out study guides so you knew exactly what would be on the exam. Anyone could get an A if they studied but not everyone did. I learned a lot in her class.
She's so nice - SO nice. And - she's black and she's proud (as James Brown would say). I wish I could take another class with her.
This woman rules. I love her.

i took her class 1st semester of my freshman year, and 4 years later she still knows my name and always says hello. you gotta love that.
She knows what she's talking about. And she lays everything out with study guides and test study guides that tell you exactly what you need to know. A lot of names and dates to remember, but it's easier if you take the time to study. A really good class.
wonderfully passionate and understands that her students have lives outside of school and some are not that interested in the subject matter.
This is an excellent class! One of the best I have taken at Emerson, and I am a junior. Federicka is one of those professors who is engaging, and who everyone wants to be friends with. She's just really easy-going and understanding. She also really knows her stuff. And by that I mean *everything*.
Very nice & Jolly. Xtremely understanding. Knowledgable & enthusiastic. Lights out + classical music = sleepy time. She does not like it when you sleep. She does want U to get a good grade though. Study guides provided. Fail a test, & take it home & fix it. Only one paper. & three exams. Very nice!
I enjoyed this class. Fredericka is awsome and knows a lot about music. The class was very interesting. She's very helpful and understanding. The exams require you to remember a lot of names and dates. Other than that you should be fine.
Thought it was going to be another lame GenEd class, but I actually learned a lot. She is really nice and funny. Though because of the subject matter at times, make sure you bring a cup of coffee with you to class!
She knows so much, and just spouts it off from memory. Sometimes it's hard to stay alert with the lights off and the classical music playing, but she's not the kind of professor you want disappointed in you, so that's motivation enough. GREAT PROFESSOR!
She was a good professor. A little boring at times, but loved what she was talking about. You couldn't help but be interested in most of it.
I had her for several classes, and she was always wonderful. She truely seems to love the subject matter, and it was hard not to become interested in the subject as well!
History of American Music was a fun and interesting class. It starts off slow, but Frederika tries her best to entice the students. She is very understanding when problems arise, and extremely approachable. I recommend going to see her perform, she is a very talented woman. Very kind!
TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS WOMAN BEFORE YOU GRADUATE.
I ADORED this woman. I was a music history minor 15 years ago, and she even let me teach some of her classes when she went away on a trip. E-mail me if you read this, Fredrika King! [email protected]
Focused entirely too much on jazz and refused to believe that country music had anything to do with American music.
She rocks! Great passion and enthusiasm although the lectures may get boring. Very easy class while at the same time you can make it challenging. Very nice lady.
She's very friendly, and knows her stuff pretty well. Has a thing for Li'l Kim... This class is all lecture, but it's interesting for the most part, and she shows good movies, and plays good music. Aside from the tests, which are hard but she gives you complete study guides, there's only one project - not that hard. Good teacher. Also fine pianist.
This class is all history and no music. She clearly knows quite a lot, but her classes lack passion and you'll more often than not end up sleeping through them.
if you already have a musical background, this class is pretty easy, and sometimes a little frustating because it has to be presented as if nobody even knows what a scale is. however, the prof is awesome! i love this lady! an amazing musician, too!
Knows tons about music. Loves to talk about it. Pretty easy when it comes to tests, gives you cmplete study guide. Lots to study, but no tricks up her sleeve. Just do the study guide and you'll do fine. P.S. I bet she was pretty hot in her time!
She is awesome. I had her last semester in the spring and I learned so much from her class : ) She is a talented and amazing teacher. You can tell that music is a big part of her life and career. Be prepared for alot of notes and useful information. BRING A NOTEPAD and study study study. She gives fair tests. Fabulous is the word for Fredericka!
Fredrika is a LOVELY person, able to school you in the same breath about Mozart, Prince, Celine Dion, Gregorian Chants and 50 Cent. But I have never worked harder on anything in my life than I do for her classes. Very few visual aids and her soft voice does not carry well in the room, leading to me always falling asleep and studying 15+ hours/night
She is very passionate about the class, and it shows. You get a study guide with every test question on it; study that and you'll do fine. If you're into history and music, you'll love the class, even if the lectures do get a bit boring. Definitely would take a class with her again, and would recommend Hist. of American Music to anyone.
I loved this course and I loved Prof. King. She is extremely knowledgeable and talented in music. Besides being interesting the course was EASY-only 3 exams and 2 papers the whole semester and there was no required textbook just handouts that she gave us. I highly recommend this course or any of King's courses at Emerson.
King is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, but the class itself seems rather difficult for a 100-level course. The 2 papers are easy, but the tests are very difficult as she expects very specific details and near verbatim definitions. I recommend the class, but be prepared to study like crazy for the tests.
Professor King is awesome. She knows so much about music, from "classical" art music to pop music. She is also very understanding. If you have a hard time getting work done because you are pinched for time just talk to her and she'll be totally cool about it. She's a great teacher.
Prof King definitely knows a TON about the subject, but this class was super boring. Lectures every day, hard to stay awake and interested. By the time we got to the 1970s and up, we had like a week left of class. Be ready for 2 solid months of classical music, dating all the way back to the 1600s.
She is awesome. Really friendly and glad to help. Knows EVERYTHING about the history of American music. Really easy. She gives you a study guide before each test. No homework except for a term paper. Pretty good at responding to e-mails fast.
Class is really easy, just show up, pay attention, and take notes. The two papers are not that bad, however the tests are very specific. She gives you a study guide, so if you fill out all the answers and memorize it you will be fine. It's just a TON of stuff to memorize. Overall good, fun, engaging class
Amazingly warm and interesting teacher.
Wonderful human being, makes lecture fun. Take extensive notes, you'll never know what exactly will turn up on the exam. On the bright side, the study guide IS the exam, so if you show up to class and copy down everything, easy A.
I miss this woman on a daily basis. She is the coolest and nicest person I have ever had the pleasure of taking a class from. The subject matter is unbeatable and she is so excited to teach it every day. You have to take this class
A very nice woman. You don't even have to pay attention in class just take the study guide she gives you because that basically is the test. She is highly intelligent. Best of all: NO TEXTBOOK!
A nice woman, but honestly. Her tests consist of blind memorization alone. Dates are of Biblical importance, not if you know a sheitsworth of what any music actually sounds like. She's fine on papers, but research. Either that, or she can't sit by an essay with her minutia-based SG and nitpick it to death. Spends class trying to catch kids on FB.
She is a very friendly and kind woman, but her class is absolutely brutal. Horribly boring, and she takes attendance regularly so you can't skip. I took History of American Music, and the class wasn't about music at all, really more the history. Be prepared to remember every single nit picky little detail...or be prepared to do awful.
Honestly, she's a really nice professor and you come out of her classes learning a lot. The exams are hard but she tells you exactly what's on them and provides you with all the notes. I totally recommend taking a class with her, she's a really pleasant person and she knows what she's taking about.
No textbook, extremely nice woman, knows a LOT about what she's talking about, a little boring sometimes, study guides are basically identical to the exams, one paper and 3 exams. I'm almost done with the class and I've learned a ton :)
She's a great woman and a great teacher. Although most classes are the typical lecture style, she keeps things interesting. Tests are straight memorization. Overall, great teacher, amazing person.
A nice woman, that's where the positives end. Her classes are a PPT, verbatim. She just walks around seeing if people are on FB. Tests are purely memorization of seemingly random dates/her phrases. Attendance 1/2 way through class, it feels like she's seen every trick in the book. Study for the exams, she gives you the answers, class will be dry.
she is a very energetic and passionate teacher but that gets annoying sometimes. the tests are insane too.
She's a nice woman.. But a bad teacher. If you're interested in American music as a topic, don't take this class with her. She makes it terribly uninteresting... somehow. Her classes are 2 hours of ppt presentations. Tests are too hard for no reason. don't take this class
LOVE HER! Her class can be difficult, and is often boring, but she is absolutely the greatest.
Frederika King is such a wonderful person! Her lectures can get a little dry, but her personality shines through the dullest of classes. I would highly recommend her to anyone!
Her class was extremely boring and she did not teach but rather read verbatim off a power pt (which IRONICALLY she discouraged). I had no interest whatsoever in class and her grading on term papers is unclear. But luckily, I am used to PURE memorizing for test, so I was able to get the grade I wanted. Get ready for memorization of useless facts.
Professor King is such a gem! She has a bright personality! I found the information we covered in class very interesting, despite my lack of interest before attending the class. Only 2 term papers and 3 tests. A lot of note taking, which I don't mind. The tests are so simple--based only on memorization! Highly recommended!
A nice woman but a SUPER dry teacher. Every class consists of powerpoints and notes. It's bearable if you have a genuine interest in the subject. The tests consist of only short answers that require recollection of very specific information. The term papers are okay but she takes off points for things she never specifically outlines as requirements
Awesome class, amazing teacher. No homework, but exams are really hard and she grades harshly on them.
Professor King is a nice person but a difficult professor. Her teaching style is dry. She does not allow laptops in class and will call you out if you are not paying attention. It also does not help that the course material is bland. Would not recommend this class or King as a professor.
Frederika is one of the worst professors I've ever had (though admittedly it doesn't help that she's teaching a terrible class). She has no idea how to make powerpoints, highlights seemingly irrelevant information that she makes you memorize for her extremely hard and long "quizzes" that are entirely short answer. A waste of money, time and effort.
Very sweet and pleasant woman, horrible professor. No matter how hard I try I cannot pay attention in her class. Her power points are unorganized so it's hard to take notes and she repeats lectures. Her quizzes are impossible to study for since the notes are so unorganized and they are extremely difficult. I do NOT recommend any of her classes.
Very hip and groovy lady. Tests are all short answer and exactly like the study guide she gives. Papers are alright. I don't why people are saying the class is hard. All you have to do is take notes during class, do the 2 papers, and take 3 tests without a textbook. She puts up her own set of notes online that will help you fill in the study guide.
Professor King is super sweet and really knows her stuff. There's no textbook for the class and no homework, except for 2 research papers. Writing the two papers and studying for the exams, in my opinion, isn't that difficult, just time consuming. The study guide IS the test, so as long as you take good notes and study hard, you'll be fine.
If you like music history, the class is really interesting. She's a VERY tough grader though. You need to memorize exact dates and everything for the tests. You really have to work for it, but she's a nice woman and she'll gladly help you if you ask for it.
King is a really great person and really knows the material inside and out. But like the rest of these evaluations, there are some downfalls. The tests are very very hard and much of the info on the test is not even given to us on her study guide. Many students complained but nothing was done. Shes very strict in class as well. no laptops or phones
Lectures are really interesting and the subject matter is very interesting. However, the tests are god awful because they are entirely written and require you to memorize almost everything she teaches. If you can easily get through a study guide, this class will be easy for you. If you have retention problems, probably not.
Professor King is really knowledgeable and really, really cares about the subject she teaches. This makes the class really fun and easy to enjoy. The lectures and power points are kind of unorganized, but you can get around that once you're used to it. The study guides are the test, so practice all of your answers and you're fine.
I love Professor King. She has an awesome, bubbly personality, and she really knows what she's talking about. Do the study guides, because they are the only way you'll be able to properly prepare for the tests, take good notes, and go to class, and you will learn so much!
I love professor King! She is so wonderful and a little strange, but she really cares about her students. She is a really talented/experienced musician as well, so her resources for outside class assignments are amazing. Listening to music is such a good time and I'm so glad to be taking it.
Prof King is amazing. She is so nice and caring and wonderful. I had a crazy schedule this semester and she has been so accommodating, even meeting with me after work on the weekends. A very talented musician, she is really passionate about music & music history. Term projects are fun, and the tests are mostly memorization. Love her & the class :)
Frederika really cares about what she teaches, and gives informative lectures. Her classes all have five grades: 3 exams and 2 projects, usually essays. She grades them very toughly, but gives you a question-for-question study guide ahead of time. You need to study hard for her tests, but if you do, you have nothing to worry about.
Although I'm sure she is a great person, I found she was extremely biased to students whom she liked. The students that struggled however, she was not nice to. The class is very hard. The tests are all open ended. YOU WILL NOT LISTEN TO GOOD MUSIC. You will listen to throat singing, bad instruments, and things that are NO LONGER RELEVANT.
Fredricka is a kind and gentle soul. She will make sure you are succeeding and are doing good. However, her teaching style can be all over the place, espeically with the notes. Which is what makes this an easy class, go to class take the notes and you'll be fine. There are 3 quizzes all of which is based on memorization and two projects.
If you love American pop music, then you will like professor King. She knows a lot about the subject and gives interesting lectures. At the same time, the class is lecture heavy and you actually need to study for the exams. If you don't like or have no interest in American pop music, then this class is not for you.
Prof. King is fantastic. While she does give a lot of lectures, she really knows her stuff and her enthusiasm is contagious- she also loves to turn lectures into whole-class discussions. The projects she assigns are complicated but you get a lot of time to do them. She takes the time to individually get to know each student and is the sweetest.
She is such a gem. One of the kindest ladies ever who starts every class by asking each student how they are doing. She gets to know everyone. The class is basically all lectures so it is hard to stay engaged but she is really passionate and knowledgable and the class was easy.
Prof King is such a sweet and caring person. She is very cheerful and nice. As someone w no music experience whatsoever, the material was a lot. It's quite dry and the assignments are insanely long and take hours upon hours to complete - mostly tedious and not totally relevant information.
She was so bad, I wanted to give her a zero. But that's not possible, so I give her a 1.
Going into the class I assumed it was going to be a breeze but I was wrong. Prof King is very kind and funny. We only had one non-lecture class all semester and when she does lecture, it's hard to pay attention. The assignments are long and hard and she grades them very harshly. It's an interesting class, just not what I thought it would be at all.
Professor King is the sweetest person to ever exist. She is so understanding and really looks out for all her students. I highly suggest taking one of her classes.
Professor King is amazing, she knows her stuff and presents it with a lot of passion, wanting the people in the class to be able to share that passion. The best was the opportunities to go to the Boston Symphony Orchestra & Ballet, experience the music in person. She was great man.
Her class was pretty boring, but she wants her students to succeeded. I recommend having an interest in classical music before taking this class because that is literally all you be discussing.
Get on her good side!
Professor King is the best! If you're looking to take a music course at Emerson, take a couple with her!
Love Professor King who really care and respect! Some fun assignments to unleash your creativity! Simple lessons, please choose her, she is lovely!
Fredericka is so sweet to the students she loves, so get on her good side. Talk to her, ask her how she's doing, listen to her rant about other students, and she'll LOVE you. She gets annoyed if you aren't as smart as her, though, and always thinks she's right even when she's not. The class was interesting, but ppt. notes/lecture heavy.
this class is refreshing compared to a lot of others at Emerson. there are only a few assignments (one of which this semester was literally just your thoughts on Beyonce's Cowboy Carter). Love her.
The classes usually consist of lectures and a couple of song presentations. She is super personable, nice, and caring, and makes an effort to get to know her students and check up on everyone. The assignments are not hard, and there's only a few. Hardly ever homework, only a few discussion, worksheets and a few essays. Definitely recommend!
If you pay attention even a little bit in her class you will be her favorite, definitely get to her good side and her class will be smooth sailing. Although I would not have enjoyed the class as much had I no prior knowledge of classical music, it is an intro class, but if you don't have any grasp on the genre, it may be a bit difficult.
This class is incredibly easy. There is a textbook but you do not have to read it as she then goes over it in class lecture style. She is very intelligent on the history of music. Lets you know when there is a quiz and gives you what to study but you have to find the info in her slides.
She is a diva and I love her, this is my second class of hers and I would gladly take more. If you pay attention and are even moderately interested in the topic material you will do totally fine. There are a few quizzes during the sem that are all mult. choice, and the projects and presentations are so chill. She is also just super knowledgeable!
Professor King is kind, but the course is very lecture-heavy, mostly consisting of her reading from PowerPoint slides and showing occasional videos. She grades papers quite harshly, and her feedback is often unclear or unhelpful. There were two quizzes the entire semester and a good amount of discussion posts.
