Lecture is basically helpful and sometimes interesting. Tricky quizzes.

She can be unoragnized at times but her classes are always interesting and engaging. The final papers are long but there is really no other work. She is very understanding and an open person. I loved her!

lecture oriented class, not all that hard, but a monster term project. no midterm, no final. that makes the class much easier. professor is clear and fair but there is a lot of reading for quizzes.

A horrible, boring, waste of time! I learned NOTHING by taking this course. Wait, I learned about her favorite TV shows as a child. Not very helpful lectures. If you want to learn something and do well in the class, visit her office. BIG group essay, but don't count on the lectures helping you.

Do your reading and get started on the 25 page paper as soon as you can. Other than that, you’ll be good to go, and keep an open mind for all the discussions. It’s a fun class.

if you can particapate in class then you can get a good grade. If you read somewhat, do your paper, and go to her office for help, you will get a good grade. I love her classes, I have had her for three semesters now and still learning. Take her!

I don't know what all the previous comments were about, this teacher has been one of the best I've had, she talks about very ineterting topics that otherwise I wouldnt know about. GREAT TEACHER, AND CLASS.

Prof. Avalos is awsome. Her classes are interesting, educational, and very fair for everyone. There is alot of reading but it is meaningful reading. The papers are long, but there is not much other homework so the work is legit. I love her character and would gladly take another class with her.

Overall a great class.You will learn things that you will go home and talk about over dinner, things that will make you cry and make you want to do something about it.HOWEVER...a lot of reading.Dont take either of these classes if you have a heavy load for the semester.you want to take it all in!

TAKE HER...if not you will miss out on the best teacher at Cal State! Yes opinions differ, but you will come out of her class stronger than ever, and the final is not that hard. 20 page paper that is all layed out for you to make it easy!! TAKE HER TAKE HER!!

She was a wonderful teacher. It's been a few years since I left CSUSM, and her class is one of the few that I remember really well. She's smart, she's fair, and she's helpful.

Fredi was the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I recommend her classes for anybody who is willing to take a look at themselves in a new light and really broaden his horizons. She is brilliant!

Fredi is so funny!! She makes you want to come to class and actually listen to what she is saying instead of fall asleep and she is down to earth. She doesn't act like some of the pompous professors I have had in the past. She is a little flustered in larger class/lecture, but her smaller classes are well worth your time. Good luck!!

by far the worst prof ive had. she rants on and on about her sister and how she is a huge lib. though her class is horribly easy, it is pretty painful to sit through.

the best teach that i have ever had...take her!!

Just make sure to do assignments and reading both are not hard but if not done your grade will suffer!!!!

She is great! Likes to talk about herself a lot.... make sure you do the reading and papers so then you will get a good grade! She really wants to see effect in all of her students.

Fredi is a very cool teacher. There is a bit of reading in this class and the quizzes each week are based on those readings, but papers are pretty easy. I am a psychology major, but I gained a lot from this class. You hear of a great deal of shocking information, too, which keeps it interesting.

GREAT TEACHER! Very interesting and influential. Enjoyed class very much. Don't stress over the paper, she does not grade too hard. Just do the work.

My Favorite at San Macros, What a character. She pushed me to be my best not because I needed to get a grade but because I respected her and wanted to impress. Now that takes a real gift. I took Her for every class she teaches over the years and I recommend you do to.

your an idiot if you can't get an A or B in her class. Yeah, she is a scatter brain at times, but she loves to teach. You will learn some thing even you don't agree with what she says. I bet the people who gave her low ratings did not agree with her ideologies, but this is college. You should rate a professor on quality not their ideologies.

she's totally a cool teacher. I guess a bunch of kids hate her, but those are just the ones that are close-minded and stuck in their little bubbles. Too bad, she has a lot to offer. Show up, do the readings (top heavy for this class) and do the assignments. Chances for extra credit too.

Must attend class and sit through semi-boring lectures. Reading is not hard and mid-term was easy. No final but a few papers throughout the semester. That's it! Easy A. Teacher is passionate and enthusiastic. Mature audiences only.

great teacher, really organized class, she likes it when people participate, class always has interesting media topics which makes time goes really fast.

Fredi means business! She does not want anyone in class who isn't serious about learning but she is an incredibly awesome professor! There are a lot of papers to write in 330... but in the end it's completely worth it. I learned so much in her class and was never ever bored! One of the most intersting classes I have EVER taken!!

Requires a lot of papers, but follow the guidelines and you shouldn't have a problem. There were no tests, which was wonderful. Lectures were long, but she made them extremely interesting. Easy grader, but you still learn the material. Come to class, do the homework, and there's no reason you won't get at least a B. Wonderful teacher!

She is an extremely fun and easy teacher. She cracks jokes most of the time, whether they are funny or not she is okay with you laughing at her! Going into the class, I really wasn't looking forward to public speaking, but she makes you feel at ease, and doesn't downgrade anyone. Hardly any work, just show up and do the speeches and that A is yours

Fredi is wonderful no matter what you hear about her. I took this class because she was the instructor, if you want someone who will tell you what's up, take her class.

Fredi is one of those teachers whose impact will stay with you forever. Riveting material, plus she is great at lecturing. Anyone who can turn a class of over 100 people into one big discussion has skill. There are a lot of papers but no tests, just do the work and show up for a good grade.

Great professor! I have A.D.D and have problems paying attention in most of my classes. She is so animated and enthusiastic I never get bored or lose interest. She has changed the way I see this world. She takes control of her class and doesn't allow for chaos but, still encourages class partisipation. Love her!

This was the third course I'd taken with Fredi...she's amazine. I'll never forget her lectures and what she taught me. This course required a lot of work, lots of reading and writing; I wouldn't say it was easy, but it's not terribly hard. The extracurricular commitments were too much... doesn't matter though, her personality makes up for it!!

Great fun energy and super funny! Makes every class fun to be in. There is a 20 page paper though...

Attendance is VERY necessary but the only hard part is just getting there! She is very enthusiastic and passionate. She makes the 3 hour long class fly by. She's genuinely interested in everyone's input and very encouraging! I can't wait to take more classes with her.

I took two of Freddi's classes, she is knowledgeable and passionate, but very very very liberal biased. It's hard to sit through the lecture when you don't agree. Picks favorites, doesn't like you if you don't agree with her bias, and did I mention she is VERY biased?

Way intimidating at first, she's just trying to scare away the slackers. "Daily" reading tests rarely occured. No tests, a lot of reading. Attendance is a must, she grades on participation. She is liberal, but she doesn't try and say she isn't. She's 1 of the few prof that say it's ok to be biased.. it's natural. Great prof, very intersting!

Fredi is an entertaining lecturer. She has the ability to make a 3 hour class coast quite comfortably. The subject matter is interesting. No excessive assignments and what is required is fair.

Fredi is great. She's a strong independent woman. The class can be controversial. For those who prefer living in shells and zombie-ing thru life as they're told, you will raise your brows to this. AVOID LABELS, it's annoying... Peace!

Well she does pick favorites and it could get annoying when you have an opinion, raise your hand and are never called on. Overall as long as you keep up with the assignments and the reading you will succeed in this class. I found it interesting and she definitely is a strong opinionated woman but I was very happy when the class was over.

Fredi is amazing! She is so nice and doesn't criticise you for not being a good speaker. She grades easy and makes class very entertaining. Take this teacher if you are afraid/are a beginner public speaker.

Fredi is amazing. Made it easy for people who put forth effort into the readings. Group projects/presentations simply turned into a class wide discussion, making standing in front of 100+ people not intimidating at all, since everybody chimes in. Yes she is very liberal, so if you have a very conservative point of view, i don't recommend taking her

Professors was great. She made the class very interesting. My perspective of media changed after her class. Homework wasn't bad, just do the work and you'll do fine.

One of the most inspiring professors I have ever met. She is one of those people that you know is incredibly intelligent just by being in the same room. She doesn't put up with immaturity, and she makes you THINK!! How many professors do THAT these days?

Honestly if you are wondering wether or not to take Fredis class, just do it. Her free form style of teaching might kind of freak you out but seriously if you participate you will do fine. If you have any concerns about your grade or anything in general let her know as she is not opposed to changing things around. Take it!

Nice lady, easy class. I would not say she is inspiring like others, but she has a nice personality and is funny. She is disorganized and sporadic with assignments, she also talks a lot about her own opinion on politics and stuff which I do not like. But she is still a great lady and if you want an easy class with a cool teacher then take her.

Fredi is very energetic and enthusiastic about communications. I had her for a 3 hour Friday class and she made it go by so quickly. She is always very supportive to speakers and helpful when it comes to topic workshops. It was definitely more than a speech class. Fredi is an awesome professor!

First of all, she's hillarious. Everything we learned about the media was very interesting and informative. I think she tweaks the class each time its taught but make sure you Attend class and do the note cards. Really enjoyed it overall, one of the best teachers Ive ever had. (all work is pretty easy writing assignments)

Fredi was by far my favorite professor last semester. She is very passionate about communications and current issues. She is liberal and her style of teaching is very relaxed. She allows the class to get off topic at times in order to allow for class discussion. Attend class and follow her outlines. Don't buy the book, its not worth it.

You will learn ALOT!Be sure to go to every class,do your notecards (to not take the final) and do every assignment. You will get an A easily!

The most influential Prof i have ever had.

A whirlwind of busywork and small assignments, loads of extra credit in case you miss something. Tests were pretty easy. Organization is a little off though, there was a lot of confusion over the innumerable small things we had to do, all of which differ in format. Would take again though!

Dr. Fredi is an amazing instructor and really challenged me to think for myself. Though, she can be confusing at times, she makes up for it by returning all emails and even gives out her cell phone number, just in case. Really wants students to succeed and take an interest in the class. I would take her again for sure.

Dr. Avalos is very passionate about the topics discussed in this class. I really enjoyed the class as a whole. It's easy to pass but you'll have to dedicate a lot of time to assignments. Just stay on top of it and you'll do fine. She also gives a ton of extra credit opportunities.

If you're thinking of taking this class, JUST DO IT. It will change your life, whether you're familiar with the way media works, or not. You can always learn more, and this is it. Dr. Avalos is an excellent teacher, she knows this stuff inside and out. Be ready to listen- but you'll be heard too.

Dr. Avalos is an incredible professor! I really enjoyed taking her class. It was by far the most informative and fascinating class I've taken. She assigns a lot of reading, but be sure to do it! It really enhances the lectures. She is also very passionate and cares about her students. I highly recommend her.

She's a really great professor, you'll learn a lot in this class. There's a lot of reading and there will be pop quizzes on the readings. There's a lot of essays but they aren't too difficult, I never got lower than a B.

Dr. Avalos tries very hard to get her students to see things from another perspective. Some think she is too liberal, too brash, or too opinionated, but that is what college is suppose to provide. A chance to actually talk about society.

Fredi's class was very insightful! If I could, I wish every college student had to take this class. It's a lot of work that keeps you on your toes, but as long as you go to class she makes deadlines very clear. As long as you work diligently and read/turn things in on time, you'll do well! Gives many extra credit opportunities.

There are no words to describe her class. She hits key points and makes lectures to be similar to everyday life. She also makes it a safe place for everyone to speak their minds. BE READY TO READ because there is so much reading. Although the material may be tedious, her lectures are interesting and is something that makes you actually think.

One of the best teachers ever in the university! Honestly just do the assignments and show up to class. the assignments are not difficult but that does not mean that they won't make you think. The final paper is very important for your final grade so don't slack off!

If you want a passionate professor who will challenge you, take Fredi. She is one of the most passionate and caring professors I have ever had. I have taken her for two classes now, and they have both been classes that I can apply to my other classes. She can be a bit unorganized at times, but thats because she constantly extends deadlines! 12/10

Extremely unorganized and you won't know what your grade is until later! Aside from that, she is a super easy grader and is very energetic! This class is about storytelling and she requires 1 textbook and 1 workbook. Definitely would take her again just because this class was not hard at all!

Fredi is a professor I will never forget! She is very vocal about her opinions but provides space for student perspectives. She is very much concerned with student's futures and the importance of active participation and the preservation of democracy. There are a lot of assignments/reading but if you stay on top of cougar courses you will do well.

She's funny but not on purpose. She cares about her students and allows freedom of discussion. Work load was easy and can be finished within a day online. She gives out some projects, but they are easy and interesting. She lets you collaborate with others for projects. She does call on people randomly sometimes so be prepared for that.

She's entertaining and nice, but she's unclear at times. Her Canvas assignments are all blank, so you must attend lectures to know what to do. She's hard to reach by email, and missing too many lectures (>30%) results in failing. One perk is she cancels class often. Paying $100 for MindTap is a scam bc she basically taught w/o it whole sem.
