Fred Jackson is a tough instructor but loves to teach. He will help you learn by taking the time to teach in a manner that is helpful. He draws lots of pictures and if you tape the class and draw the photos you will pass the class. All his testing comes from his notes. So learn from your pictures and you will do fine in his class.

He is very hard and test you on the most obscure parts of his lecture. If he spends twenty minutes discussing something ignonre it, it won't be on the test. But if he throws something out in thirty seconds, you better know it front and back.
very good teacher, knowledgeable. easy to hard tests... i like his class so far.
Wonderful teacher. Logical presentation of technical materials. Eager to further explain complicated concepts when asked. 95% or more of test questions come from notes. Draws all anatomy on board while teaching at good note-taking rate. No power-point or Web CT. Enthusiastic about subject. Likes students. great teacher for difficult course.
He is a great teacher, he enjoys the subject, very knowlegable. It is a hard course, you need to study a lot, but his exam is mostly from the notes. He wants you to succeed. Watch out for the muscle physiology, that is the hardesdt part of his course.
To echo some other comment 95% of his test come from his notes. I don't think there is a more knowledgeable teacher for these two classes anywhere. He makes you think and if you put in the effort the class will be really benefit throughout your career. Again you have to work and strongly advise recording his lectures. Bottom line he is one of t
Very cool guy - take a good amount of notes - he tests from his lectures not the book.
Very nice and very cool. You can actually take notes in his class. I record only as a backup. Lab is hard because he gives you a lot of stuff to memorize at once but lectures are alittle easier then 189. So a B is possibly. Less complex info to learn. Best prof for anatomy, by far. Going to try to get in his 224 also.
Very hard class but professor is great and very clear. Very knowledgable and loves the subject. Must study and takes lots of notes. Great professor!
Great teacher if you can keep up the pace with note taking and drawing pictures. Alot of the time I don't know what he is taking about till the end of his sentence. Hard to take notes at his pace. Recommend a class in short hand. Tests aren't to bad. He doesn't test you on anything you do in lab so I would take him for lecture and not for lab.
Very hard class as it goes on it gets harder. Good professor, very very intelligent! Very nice guy and easy to talk to. Serious studying. Labs quizs are so damn hard! Fill in the blanks and way too much to possible remember at once. Don't know why they do that. Then you have to spell it correctly. To much! They wonder why theres a nurse shortage.
224's like 223-mastering technical interrelated body systems. Dr. Jackson teaches in logical, straight-foreward manner. Tests are about 95% from notes. Is enthusiastic, helpful, & willing to clarify confusing concepts. Accessable via e-mail & office hours. Great teacher...I took for both 223&224.
Nice prof but class is super hard! Lab quizs are memorizing 50 different things at once. Too much to memorize!! Doesn't give out sample study sheets before each tests. Mad hard!!
I was taking his class and Microbiology at the same time, I never expected to get a B grade but I did. Hard subject but he explains well so no surprise test questions. 95% of his lectures are in the test so your notes are like a study guide. If you take a lot of notes, understand the notes, and use flash cards, you'll be surprised what you'll learn
Dr. J is awesome, his lectures are full of energy and enthusiasm! He made a boring subject like Biology really interesting and his analogies make things easier to remember! I took both his 223 & 224 lectures and labs because I liked the way he explained things. As long as you go by what he says and not always what you read, you will do really well
Wow. Dr. J is one of the best school teachers I've ever, ever, ever had.
Extremely hard material! Don't expect him to roll over & give you the answers, CRITICAL THINKING NEEDED!! All RN students: if you can't hack the material, it's NOT Dr. J's fault. Maybe you should choose another field. LISTEN TO THE LECTURES and seek help if needed. Don't just tuck tail & run because you don't study & then rate him poorly.
Not my style of teacher. I would not take another class from him again. I like him as a person. he dose not use webct. So dont expect to no what you missed if you miss a class. I would really look into other teachers before taking his class. It's harder than you think. people like him as a person not as a teacher. I wish you luck
He is very nice & very helpful, however, he is not my kind of professor. He hardly writes notes down, all he does is draws pictures & the rest he explains it (w/o writing anything). Doesn't give a study guide & says that reading the text is not necessary, but u need to read it to understand his "notes" (drawings), and even so, his test is Hard.
Dr. Jackson has a unique style of teaching that fit me perfect. The material is very hard and yet he explains it in a way that is EASIER to understand. I still spent a lot of time studying. So far he is the best teacher I have had.
I understand the material, but this teacher designs the exams for professors and not the students. No one understands anything on the tests, even if you read all the book, the tests are totally impossible to understand. The class grade on average is c-d. He's smart but a horrible teacher. He does not know how to teach. I do not recommend him at all
No you do not understand the material because if you know the material in and out, you would get an A on every test like a couple of other students. That is BS. Fix ego. He grades fair because he bases his test on class lectures.
Approachable, likeable prof. LOADS of drawings/concepts in lecture. But, lecture tests r tricky! there's usually 2 POSSIBLE answers to most of the questions, they're worth anywhere from 1.3 to 1.5, lab tests don't have enough questions, so easier to fail! Take someone else if u want to pass ANYONE will do!
If you are looking to gain a full conceptual, practical and thorough knowledge of the human body this is the best instrutor to take for A & P. Dr J is an outstanding instructor. He will not lay out an easy A. You will have to earn it however you will be thankful that you had him when your done. No slackers will survive this course.
Great Teacher, VERY warm and helpful. He gave up teaching medical students because they were no fun to teach, he loves TEACHING. EVERYTHING is based on Lecture, I used the book only once to look up one word. You must be a very good note taker but if you can do that your set. Can re-do test questions to earn 1/2 points back, come on!
Great teacher. His class is hard and his tests are a little tricky, but just be sure you know the material through and through before you take the exams. Tests are on his notes, and I almost never look at the book, and I got an A for 223 and I have an A so far for 224.RECORD THE LECTURES is my biggest piece of advice.
I came into this class having taken BIOL189 years ago and was scared! But Dr. J makes the subject matter so interesting and explains concepts really well. I wish I could have him for 223 also. I agree that he does do TONS of drawings (get yourself some markers!) but his tests are completely off his notes. Missing class is a no-no.
I love Dr. J. He is the best professor in the world. I entered into his class thinking I was a bozo. But after taking him for 223 and 224 I felt like I could take any class and get an A.
I took Dr. Jackson this fall and received a B+. I think he is one of the best Biology professors out there. He's really funny and knows his stuff. The only thing is there are a lot of diagrams and calculations. I studied off of his notes and did great; I imagine if I opened the book I would've done way better. But he tests off of his notes! :D
I was terrified of taking this class because I had a tough time in 223 but Professor Jackson was amazing. He has a way of explaining difficult concepts that is SO helpful! Definately the best bio professor I've ever taken. Must be able to take good notes and must attend class.
Great Professor! He is very clear in his lectures. Puts everything in perspective so you can understand. Draws A LOT. You'll use every page in your note book. Funny and pretty straight forward on exams. Do recommend
Hes 1 of those few professors who really care about his students. He does everything to help his students even if it means extra work for him.He tries very hard to make his students understand the material,he doesn't have a power point like other professors who discuss the topic as if they're in some presentation and expect the student to understand
I really enjoyed this professor's class and came to appreciate his style of teaching- explaining as he draws. It's good for visual learners! He makes things easy to understand. I would recommend recording his lectures and reading in the textbook the parts that were covered in lectures, even though it's not required.
wonderful professor. record and listen to his lectures, b/c all of his test are off his lectures. people who failed did not record his lecture and only went off what he wrote on board. lots of drawings. only used the book when i didnt understand certain things. but test are all off lectures.im taking him for 224. love him. he's great
Dr.J is great! This class is not easy, you MUST attend EVERY lecture and pay attention but with good notes anyone can do well. Dr.J is really great at explaining why the material is relevant to the people in the med field which make up the majority of the students in the class. Make sure to take LOTS of detailed notes!!
One of the best CSN got. Exam are not easy nor hard, its ok as long as you do your studying.do not procastinate and make sure you bring your recorder. very friendly and willing to help students out academically talking...very funny.
I loved the classe and Dr. j The lecture is fun and the Mr j stayes on topic all the time. Evry 5 min you spend ther is for learning and understanding. You can ask after class as many times you want and you'll have your answer. Excelent teacher
Dr. Jackson is very knowledgeable about Biology. You will need to put in a decent amount of time studying if you want to pass this course. If you're looking for a course that you can just breeze through and never have to study, try again...
This is a hard class to take. He is a great professor. He knows the subject very well. You have to listen to lectures over otherwise you will not do well. He gives no study guides. He is very tricky in his exams and makes them extra difficult. You have to put in the work to pass.
This prof is passionate and is for VISUAL LEARNERS ONLY. I wish he used wrote more actual words on board. No reviews, no study guides, PP, quizes or notes. You must tape record, draw with different colored pens & read book to fill in gaps. I studied every day of the wk to get an A-. If youre late, dont attend or record lectures, you wont do well.
best teacher.had him for 223/224. if you record his lectures and pay attention to what he says in class you will do great.concentrate on what he talks about and dont read anything extra in book.record lectures!!!!!
PROS: Subject matter expert. Very helpful. CONS: No slides, no powerpoints, hard to catch up w/ drawings and writing notes at the same time. No handouts. Most questions not covered in lectures. Not caught up w/ technology. SUGGESTIONS TO STUDENTS: record lectures, read the book, and rewrite your lecture notes. You will PASS this course.
Amazing teacher. He makes learning fun. I actually learned from him, not just memorized like classes with handouts and PPs. I recorded lectures, took notes, and never even opened textbook, and got an A. Test questions are what he covers in lectures. If you get his class, you are lucky. He is my alltime favorite teacher.
He is one of the best professors I've ever had, he makes things easier to understand, he is funny and very patient, he gives a lot of analogies during lectures to help you understand difficult concepts. He is for students who are visual and like interaction during the lecture, as he talks he draws on the board, he puts thinking questions on exams.
Best professor I ever had. He makes hard concepts easier to understand, he gives lots of analogies, he is funny and very patient, he likes to put thinking questions on exams but will almost always give you a freebie. He is for visual learners that like interaction during lecture, he draws on the board, His exams are straight from lecture.
He is one of the best biology teacher's @ csn and there arent that many. no powerslides, all drawings on board, exams straight from lect. 5 exams N 1 finale, will stay after class to answer ur ?,utilize his office hrs,& study study. he is fair with his ? on his exams.Love this prof.style of teaching, totally for visual learners!!!!
I love him. Great for visual learners, just plain old simple lecturing, with lots of visual drawings on the boards n some fun analogies n jokes in-between. He is straight forward and to the point, test r from lecture so attend class. U have 5 test and a final, record ur lectures n take notes, u wont even need ur book. I learned so much. Best Prof !
he's class is pretty hard, specially when you take it in a summer course because it's short! I recommend to not take this course in summer. He goes over in many topics that you need time study. He is a great professor and he tries to keep you interested and makes sense most of the times
Although I think Dr.J is great for visual learners,I don't think I learned as much as I could have because I could not read my notes. They just looked like colorful squiggles and I was lost when studying. He draws everything on the board & lectures old school. No powerpoint, no outlines. Nice guy though!
He is a brilliant teacher who will keep you interested. Tape record the classes. He is funny and kind - uses drawings and analogies to explain concepts. The book is helpful to study with but he basically tests on the lecture. This class is for a visual learner who can stay focused and take excellent notes. Bring colored pencils or pens to class.
Great, knowledgable, and funny teacher. However, I found his style of teaching difficult to follow for the amount of stuff in the subject. That's just personal preference though.
BEST TEACHER EVER! He is one of the few at CSN where he want's his students to succeed. A & P is not an easy subject so of course you would have to put in your own time to it. He lectures very old school but he does it because he wants you to formulate your own way of learning. I found the book to be a second reference but i strongly recommend him!
Very hard class. I know I could have gotten a better grade if I would have studied more. One thing I can say is his lectures are hard to follow so record the class go home, read the text and listen to the recorder again and everything will make much more sense trust me. Tests are based on lectures and are about 55-70 questions long.
Very hard. Do not take this class in the summer as it is EXTREMELY FAST PACED. It is suggested you read chapter before and after and record his lecture. He jumps around between chapters and doesn't really follow the book. His tests are based on lecture and his drawings are hard to follow. The test requires 5 essay memorizations. No cheat sheet.
Learned a lot. Very interesting. Tape record lectures! Book only as reference. Gives essay questions ahead of time. Test’s on lecture. Great illustrations and real live examples to concepts. Summer is ALL inclusive and compressed. Study
Semi-great illustrator; definately record lectures and take good notes; exams ARE based off lectures & partially comprehensive (multichoice and essay); no shortcuts in summer/full 16 week in 8 weeks. Purposely twists exams to reveal how much you really know. Redo missed questions for 1/2 credit. Loved the class, learned a LOT! STUDY HARD!!!
Absolutely adore this professor. I can hardly say the same for his exams - they are TOUGH. I studied my butt off and am still leaving the class with a mediocre grade. However, I really got a lot from his class. Visual learners will do well in this class. MUST RECORD LECTURES. Cover the topics he lectures on in class in the book.
Great teacher! He let's his students know what is going to be on the test, and thats what is on the test. There are no surprises. I learned a lot from him and wish I could have taken him for 224. I will miss him.
Tough class and lots of information.. You REALLY have to attend class, pay attention, take notes and study if you want to get a good grade. Dr. Jackson does a fabulous job at explaining tough concepts, so you can understand them. He actually wants his students to pass and is very helpful. He lectures old school... NO power points or study guides.
Class is very hard! He is a great teacher, explains concepts well. Recording lectures is a MUST. Jumps all over the book, and tests right out of notes. His exams are BRUTAL! Study hard, every day. Great for visual learners, is always willing to go over exams after class and explain missed questions.
Prof Jackson is the best. He explains everything you need to know. You have to study hard and record his lectures and you will do great. I am learning so many things that can be applied to everyday life. Many things that I have seen growing up is making sense now. Take him you will not be disappointed.
If you need Bio 223/224, you need Fred Jackson. Recording lectures is a must because there is so much information in this class and you'll miss it trying to draw the diagrams he puts on the board. Exams are straight from lecture, so the book is used mainly for terminology and the photos. His classes fill up fast for a reason!
I did not get this guy at all. His teaching style is difficult, and confusing...I can't get past a C on any of his exams and the least amount of time I've spent studying for his exams was 30 hrs. My worst class and grade EVER...
Prof Jackson is great. He knows the material he teaches. His exam are meant to make you think and apply what he is teaching. Dont think you go to class and its an easy A. At this level biology it is not, put some effort and you will do great. Like a prof once said 50 percent will drop and 50 percent will pass. So what part of the 50% will you be!
I took Bio 224 before and not being satisfied with my grade, I decided to take on another Professor. I took Jackson and it has been one of the best choices I have ever made. He makes lecture interesting and help you apply it to real life. Attending is a MUST. I just listened to lectures to death like a song to study and did well on exams.
Very intelligent teacher BUT SUPER HARD. His test questions are very tricky. He ONLY draws on the board with 50 different color markers and it's hard to keep up sometimes. No study guides. I personally Would NOT TAKE him Again. He is very sweet, smart and helpful but tough so keep that in mind!!! :)
Lab class was horrible!! The questions on quizzes are very hard. You can not misspell anything because you just lost half a point. Also he is a very hard grader
Key to class! Record lecture!!!!!! Listen to recordings to study and you will do well on exams.Only refer to book for pictures. All exam questions are from lecture!!Very interesting lectures, nice and knowledgable professor.
Gives lots of info in lab if you ask questions. Quizzes are kind of hard but if you spend a little time studying you'll be fine. On quiz questions that use microscopes if you aren't sure what the pointer is on you can just ask. He is very willing to make sure know what it's on (since people move the pointer)
Fred Jackson is the best bio teacher you can take at CSN. He is very helpful and explains difficult concepts well. Exams are hard and require a lot of studying, but are mostly from his lectures. Record lectures and listen to them all the time is the key to passing this class!
If you're a visual learner take this class. Mr J. is very knowledgeable & can explain/answer almost any question you have, he's super nice! Ditto what everyone else said about recording lectures!!! Not an easy class, MUST study hard to pass so be prepared. 5 or 6 exams all based off lectures, so it's best to show up. Wish I had him for 224 too.
Nice helpful person. Answers questions in and out of class. Best for 223 rather than 224. Wish he would answer e mails. Record lecture and listen over n over. You will eat, breath and sleep bio and it will still be hard to get a good grade. No class should be this hard. His is not the exception for that in Bio. Good for Lab too. Take lots of notes.
Dr. J knows his stuff, lectures are interesting, but he goes fast. Tests 100% from lecture. No powerpoints or study guides. Take photos of what he draws on the board. Recording lectures is a MUST. Go to office hours, he'll help you. No such thing as easy A in 223, expect 10-20 hrsweek studying, that's what it takes no matter which professor.
Really enjoyed this class. He goes the entire scheduled time. You'll need a recorder for the lectures, notebook, and red, black, green, blue, and purple pens. That's it. I recorded each lecture and typed them and will probably receive a B but I didn't study as much as I shoule. He ONLY tests on his lectures. Use the book mostly for lab. fav prof.
Professor Jackson is truly passionate about anatomy and physiology. He answers every question, makes great associations with tough concepts, and he makes class ineresting. All A&P courses are difficult. This one is NO EXCEPTION! Study hard, study long, and you'll make it out alive. If you let the material get away from you, you'll be doomed.
Dr. Jackson is amazing! He is one of the best professors at CSN. His classes fill up fast for a reason. He is very sweet and willing to help you. I earned an A in this class. It was not easy but you can do it too!! You are gonna have to put time in to get a good grade. if you wanna be a nurse this class shouldn't be too hard for you.
GREAT PROFESSOR! Best advice? record lectures and draw out pictures. His tests follow his lectures perfectly. If you give yourself time to study, there should be no reason to fail his class. If you have questions, he is more than willing to answer. Just make sure you touch up on BIO189 for his first exam... He is one of CSNs best professors!
Prof. Jackson sticks to the topic that he quizzes and tests on. Sometimes, it is a broad spectrum and it is possible to get carried away in concepts, but if you listen to his lectures and find some concepts difficult, utilize the book to help you become able to apply these concepts to life. It isn't so much the definition, but how they're utilized
I liked professor Jackson. He is great at explaining hard concepts. Plus, he is a very nice and approachable person. I would definitively take him again
Professor F. Jackson is a difficult professor to have for Biology 189. His pop quizzes and exams are not easy. Also he like to trick the students in all of his exams, make sure you read the question at least 2 times before answering the question. Best advice is study, study, study. Good Luck and I do not recommend him.
Professor Jackson doesn't do powerpoints, etc for lecture. He does everything on the board and recording his lectures may help you. He's really nice and he's patient when you need help. But his class was not for me, i need powerpoints. I would definitely recommend him for lab though.
Difficult class, but professor Jackson explains everything crystal clear. If you want a good grade, all you have to do is study, study, study!!
He makes hard concepts easy to understand. People that give him a low rating is because they dont put in the time. You have to study. This is a biology course its hard, but prof jackson isnt on a mission to make you fail. He gives pop quizzes but they are easy if you study daily. Exams are hard, but manageable if you study notes and textbook.
He is a really nice guy! knows the subject well. The first exam was on 4 chapters the first 2 were review from bio 189. He does not give notes writes on the board. Some of the words are unclear because his writing wasn't the best. Record the lecture, he does moves on quickly. He is always in the tutoring center for help, exams are really wordy
Professor Jackson brings a new prospective to learning and lectures. He loves to draw and if this is not your learning style, you'll have difficulty in this class. There are mountains of information put out and your ability to absorb it will present challenges. You must study and study often, groups study help. His tests are difficult.
If you are a visual student take him! Must record his lectures and review your notes. He does not use pp only draw pics on the board. He goes fast in his lectures but makes a difficult subject easy. His exams are difficult and he likes to give you pop quiz. This subject is hard but if you put the time you should be fine. I got an A in this class.
LOVE Dr. Jackson. SUPER smart, knows and explains 224 very well! He actually makes learning 224 interesting and yes, funny. He is old school (which I like), No touchy feely emails and he doesn't coddle the students. Everything is drawn on the white board so get ready to write ALOT. His tests are strictly off of his lecture, so hardly any textbook.
He doesn't give any notes! Not one sheet of paper. Need a recorder. Very difficult. Things he talk about in class are interesting. He compares it to the real world medical field but a lot of it is not on the test. Not good if you are a visual learner.
Jackson is extremely monotone and he writes notes on the board, so be ready to write fast or bring a recorder. His lectures were terrible and his pop quizzes were hard. If you think you're even mediocre at science, don't take this teacher because 189 is hard, but even harder with him as your professor.
This class is extremely difficult and it doesn't help that Professor Jackson is monotone and doesn't give you time to write notes. Bring a recorder.
Dr. Jackson has an "old school" style of teaching, writes everything on the board. Don't let this scare you! He truly cares about his students & if you need help ask him! There is pop quizzes, but if you reviewed your material well, they are not as hard as everyone says. Tests are worded tricky, but plenty repeat questions/xtra cred by the end
I loved Dr. Jackson. This was the 3rd time I took 189. It was the first time it finally clicked. He doesn't use PP which freaked me out at first and he doesn't do any web stuff in Canvas. That turned out to be an awesome thing. I actually listened to the lectures because I wasn't just reading and writing down a slide. I did really well this time!
Dr. J is AMAZING! I had quite a few personal issues that prevented me from taking exams on the scheduled days. I let him know my situation and he was flexible and willing to work with me. I had him for 223 Lec and 224 Lec & Lab. Record his lectures and listen to them after class. Dr J made A/P enjoyable and understandable. He is a wonderful Prof!
I took professor jackson for bio 189 lec and 223 lab. He's great! His lectures are a little heavy and sometimes can get a little confusing because theres just so much info given so quickly. No PP just notes. quizzes/exams are straight from notes He explains things so they're easy to understand. Always answers any questions. Great professor
I was a little concerned at the beginning of the semester when I found out Dr. Jackson didn't provide anything online. He doesn't need to though. His teaching style makes it so concepts are easier to understand than any other teacher I've had. Record the notes and write more than he writes though. Tests are on anything he says.
Dr. Jackson is an old school professor. He does not use ppt. He writes and draws on the board. He unexpected pop quizzes. Exams are strictly from lectures but if you record and listen to the lectures you will be fine. I took his class and I got an A. He is very nice and truly cares for his studen
He will mumble a big terms quietly then go into a story so be sure to listen extremely carefully to your recordings. You'll have to figure out how everything reacts to everything else on you own. Crash coarse on YouTube helps sometimes but they don't go into depth enough. Buy an A&P book and read it. He's a nice guy but its like he's on autopilot.
I would not recommend this professor! Hes late to class and only teaches half the material you need to know for the test. He is very confusing and skips most of the book material. He includes things on the test that aren't in the book or his lectures. His questions are the longest and most confusing I've ever seen. Go's out of his way to trick you!
I remember a lot more by his style of teaching, but not enough to get an A. 1/6 exams I managed to get a 90. I don't like the fact that sometimes we have to squish notes bc he adds to the big picture. My brain hurts! Listen Carefully, ask questions, Cant read his writing, Nice guy, dont take with a full load, overwhelming, survive w/ a recorder.
Bing some sort of recording device for his lectures. He's very old school! Doesn't use power points, videos, handouts or even canvas. You'll get a marker board and almost 2 hours of lecture. He's very smart, easy to understand and caring. All of his quizzes and exams come from his lectures. STUDYING is a must! His exams are written to confuser you.
He does not use canvas so there is no way of calculating ur grade. His lectures are long and take a lot of time. He does not give notes. I am a visual learner but his drawings are awful. He makes your life difficult. One lecture will take you atleast 3 hours to understand and write it. Do not take him. Take some one with notes. He does not care.
He definitely is worth going to class for because he adds notes on the chapter that you won't find in the book. He does just around a bit, so if you are a book worm good luck. If someone didn't understand something, he didn't just rephrase it, but uses visual models in everyday life. This was my 2nd retake at bio 189 and with him I passed.
Great professor! He allows you to audio record his lectures which he also highly suggests all of his students do. His exams are all based on his lectures. if you don't have patience and time to transcribe any recordings don't even bother taking him you will fail. He does not give out any study guides, power points, or any extra credit.
Follow along with lecture in your book. He jumps all over the place. He does not use Canvas, or powerpoints, he writes on the marker board. There is no homework, which you would think is good, but all your grades are based on testing alone, so if your not a good tester don't take him. Tests are multiple choice, but tricky wording. No extra credit.
I took him for 189 & 224 and I think he's a great professor. He doesn't sugar coat anything, your grade depends on your study effort, 4 exams and a final (yes, they are hard and yes, he makes you think) but if you have a problem with anything or need something explained better, he helps any way he can. This course is difficult but I feel he helps.
I've taken Jackson for both 223 & 224. I like him, he's funny. That being said if you are bad at taking exams or have bad memory, don't take him. If you decide to take him RECORD the lecture and type it up after. Everything he tests on is in the lecture. His tests are HARD, his questions are based on real life scenarios, you have to think logically
De. Jackson is very nice man! Very knowledgeable. But his way of teaching is super tough to adapt to (at least for me). Im a visual learner, I like to see pictures/animation to explain things. Dr. Jackson just writes and draws everything on the white board with different colors of markers to better identify what he visualizes. Tests are rough!!
Lectures are interesting and easy to listen to. Friendly, good-natured personality. Happy to answer questions. Definitely record the lectures. Most of his exam material comes from these. The book isn't necessary, but definitely helps. LOTS of application questions in his exams. No matter how well you think you know the material, exams are hard!
Attendance is a must. Beware that this professor does not use power point and uses dry eraser board to explain and draw his lectures. The only thing that saved me from failing this class was getting an A in lab. :(
JUMPS ALL OVER THE PLACE. He doesn't use powerpoint no visual illustrations. He doesn't provide things in canvas. Be prepare to take a test without having to see a study guide.
224 is a challenging course, no doubt. Prepare to spend serious time studying. Dr. Jackson is very knowledgeable and his lectures are interesting. Easy to understand. Record his lectures! Study and you will earn a good grade. Exams are not easy. Application style question. Fair and caring professor.
Good professor. He doesn't explain anything unless you ask him. Not a tough grader.
He teaches really fast so I got most of my notes from my voice recorder. The exams are based off of his lectures, but only provides the chapters you should have read to be prepared. His teaching method is very old school and does not provide powerpoints or videos. The only thing I learned is how to be a good listener and fast note taker.
This class was tough since I was taking 3 other classes. You have to really study every day and I would recommend to record his lectures. He is kind and if you have questions he is free in his office hours. The class was tough and I passed with a C. I would recommend a different teacher if you could. If not then you'll be fine as long as you study!
Biol 223 is tough no matter how you look at it. What great about Dr. Jackson is you must attend his class to get the materials. Recording his lectures is a must. He does not refer much to the textbook (only on the first 2 chapters). His teaching technique is old school. No powerpoints or pictures. Study from his lecture. Study hard and you'll pass.
BIO 223 with Dr. Jackson in 1997. I learned a lot from that class and took those lessons on to medical school. Dr. Jackson's teaching made medical school anatomy relatively easy for me. Dr. Jackson was very inspirational in my journey towards medical school. His encouragement and belief in me, when I doubted myself will forever be appreciated.
Dr. Jackson was my favorite professor. I had him for 223 and 224. He doesn't use powerpoint because he doesn't need to. He does his entire lecture by memory and by drawing detailed diagrams on the board. He highly recommends recording his lectures. When reviewing for exams, the recordings are very helpful to add text to your diagram drawings.
I tediously worked hard for this class and the results showed. The professor is very knowledgeable with the material. He explains the lectures in a manner where one can really understand, even though the material is difficult to understand. These are one of the gems of CSN, Jackson exams are difficult but I would recommend just study the material!
I loved him so much! His lectures are great and he's very knowledgeable, he does each lecture from memory! Biol 224 is a very hard class but he was able to explain things in ways we understood. Be prepared to study, I've never studied more for a class. I recorded his lectures and spent about 3 hours on each one.
Dr Jackson is seen as "tough" because he doesn't use powerpoints. If you put in the work, record/re-listen to the lectures, you'll be fine! Don't get scared away by his old school ways, you'll learn more than you ever thought you could. I took him for 223 and 224, would take him for other classes if I could. Master his tests and you'll be good!
Professor Jackson was the best teacher I have ever had at CSN/UNLV. His lectures are easy to follow. Best thing to do is record his lectures and then scribe them word for word, if you do this and study just your notes alone, you will get an A. His exams are straight from lecture. Don't buy the book. I took him for 223 & 224 cause I love him so much
Straight old school, uses white board and lectures on everything he draws. Very clear with his explanations and always willing to answer questions. Tests are tough but come straight from his lectures. Recording is ok. He doesn't require textbooks but suggests them to help study. I strongly recommend if you can listen and note take at the same time
I took priofessor Jackson fall 2018 evening class at the henderson location. I never knew how to study my whole life with schooling, but always end up passing. He gave me pointers to study differently, which helped me to understand biol better. When you need help, hes always available and always smiling. Just study!
To pass the class, have a recorder, colored pens, and a notebook. Although you can read the book, it has too much information and MOST of the questions in his exams are based on his Lectures (NO PPTs or handouts). I would probably get an A if I took the first exam more seriously, but once I got my recorder my grades shot up significantly.
Visit every lecture! I got A but it was very hard! My strategy: write down everything you can at the lectures. Read the book at home once, refresh 2-4 times the info from your notes before the exam. I did the voice recordings in the beginning but never used them
Ok so most people have him negative feed back but I can say I LOVE this professor ! Took him for 223 and 224 and passed! You need to actually try and study a lot, dont go into bio and think its a easy A with out trying . Everything he says is on the test so bring a recorder ! Good luck !
Ok I dont understand all the negative feedbacks, he is one of the BEST professors Ive taken at CSN, You cant expect BIO to be easy you have to work for it. I studied at least 40 hours a week maybe more plus lab. He writes everything down so be ready to keep up and record his lectures it helps! Only 5 tests plus a final , and he curves a lot !
Don't cheat yourself and take the "easier" teacher. Dr. Jackson will help you comprehend the human body and all it's complexities with more clarity than any teacher out there. You can tell he has a real passion for teaching. I took him for 223 and 224 and I can honestly say I'm going to miss him
If you feel you NEED PPTs and handouts to pass, he may not be your first pick. His teaching materials include markers, the whiteboard, and his brain. However, if you're willing to try something new, you may be pleasantly surprised. His tests are not as difficult as everyone makes them out to be. The ones leaving terrible reviews did not try.
Took him for 223 and 224. Hope he's well enough to return. Tough, tough test-writer but I made an A for 223, B for 224. Available during office hours for questions; even tutored one classmate for 2 hours twice a week. Record the lectures: I cannot stress this enough. Listen to them over and over. Make flashcards. It's a tough class. But I loved him
Everything he goes over in his lectures are on the exams! Id suggest having a laptop, he goes over on for rather quickly , so Id imagine you wouldnt be able to jot down information before hes finished. If you dont have a laptop record his lectures. Read the book, he follows it for the most part!
He is an amazing prof, but I am not good at notes & studying so I did not do well on the tests. I stayed the whole semester to get the feel of 224 and labs, but I chose not to retake 224 with Dr. Fred because his teaching method and my learning method do not go well. His drawings are not clear! They require alot of looking through books - beware.
I am not sure how Mr. Jackson got good reviews. It seemed like he didn't care for the class, didn't bother to explain the assignments, just expected us to understand the material. Extreme lack of participation. This online course is very difficult. The readings, quizzes and tests are custom made by Professor Dawn Nelson at CSN. Not an easy class.
If you're not a visual person don't take his class. His lectures are mainly on the white board and he likes to draw. Don't skip class because you'll be behind.
