hes a cool teacher. all his lectures are on powerpoint and you dont need the book he gives you all the motes. hes very clear and helpful
He is a good teacher, he is a very nice guy and he tries to make everything interesting. You will take power point notes everyday, make sure to write everything down. He goes over everything that will be tested on and as long as you study your notes you should be okay. There are three tests, a paper, and a short presentation in which you will do.
very easy teacher. powerpoint notes everyday, 1 5minute presentation, 1paper on classical conditioning and 3 exams. tries to make class fun and openly invites discussion. take him
He was pretty decent teacher, he always try to make class fun and uses his personal experiences to help you understand the subject better...plus the class was pretty easy, all you have to do is just take the notes and study it and you should get a good grade...
He doesn't know about this class at all. If you can take another teacher at another school you will probably learn something. I just learned from the book and powerpoint, and other students in the class. Maybe in his other classes he is good but this one he doesn't even know what he is talking about.
The class is really boring. He lectures with powerpoint and sometimes confuses himself. He tries to make the lectures interesting but doesn't always succeed. The class is really easy. If you do the work and show up to class, you'll definately do well. The class was an easy A.
He is VERY nice, but you can tell he's new at teaching. He seems to get a bit intimidated by the students sometimes. He does all his lectures with powerpoint. He tests from the notes and hand-outs. You don't need a book for this class... don't waste your money on one. I got a "B" pretty easily.
Fredy Aviles is a very shy person. Most of the time he looks down and at the wall. Not too much eye contact. His lectures are pretty boring. The class would be more enjoyable if there were videos he could show. Overall though he is a bit confused on the subject matter, so I would not recommend taking him for psychology.
I dropper this class. He's really nice and willing to help, but most of the time, you're writing notes. Some people like writing notes... He always takes role, you loose points if you miss a class or you're late... So If you're the type to run late.. Don't take this class.
Excellent teaching skills.
Prof. Aviles was a bit nervous while teaching, which was sometimes distracting, but overall not bad. Powerpoint lectures, no use of text (atleast I didn't and I still got an A). Attendance mandatory in order to get highest grade possible. Relatively easy tests, and the subject matter is broken down into its simplest format. Would def. recommend.
I loved this class, it was super easy. You don't need a textbook at all. The tests are straight from the powerpoint. He is really nice and I enjoyed it. I definitely recommend him... :)
Very good teacher, always exited about teaching and i learned a hole lot with him!
GREAT REACHER! always excited to teach. I didnt have to use the book at all. Very good class.(TAKE NOTES!!!)
Class is set up to where you fully understand what is expected of you. You have a research paper and like 2 other small papers. Homework isnt bad and thats basically it. Nice guy but kinda jumpy.
Nice guy. A little jumpy and nervous, but we all just laugh at it. Tests are straight from the homework and notes. There is 1 paper, but what can you do? Attendance is mandatory, he will drop you and your grade will suffer. Overall, pretty easy class.. except for the paper =]
Prof. Aviles' lectures are very organized. You don't want to miss any classes. Do the homework before the tests and you'll do fine. He'll teach you how to write an APA paper clearly. You really should take his 101 class so you won't have any problems with papers later in your psychology classes.
This teacher is a joke. I don't know why people have given him good ratings. He just reads straight from his slides, sometimes he doesn't even know what he wrote. He doesn't seem to like when people comment. He's not helpful. He wants a 0% for turnitin.com which is impossible. He called my profession "bogus". Not professional if you ask me.
work all done online. mandatory attendance. all lectures available online so you can just listen during class and learn. if you study powerpoints alone you can manage a c or even a b. paper takes decent effort. i took soc psy and dev psych, received 2 As
he's very organized and predictable which is good he's kind of boring though his class was easy only got to do homework before a test and u can pretty much pass a test by going off the notes.. i got the same grade when i would go off the notes and read the text bk but in the end all i would do is study the notes.. the research paper isn't that hard
Professor Aviles is a very organized teacher therefore his expectaions of you are clear. What is not clear is how he uses turnitin.com. He is very unreasonable with this. It can and will greatly affect your grade if not done properly. Just be prepared for it. Otherwise, not so bad.
Dr. Aviles is boring. Every class session includes reading off of slides that he also posts on Blackboard. He explains to you that he is willing to be helpful but you might as well take notes on slides because that is all he uses. He also gives tutorials on APA format when it is COMPLETELY unnecessary. His tests are easy.
Be prepared to teach yourself, because you won't learn a single thing from him. He doesn't listen to his students at all. Homework takes abt 2 hrs each asgnment, 10pg report (takes off points for every %pt from turnitin), and the tests are 90?s with a 20 pt short answer section. Attendance is mandatory. Study hard if you want an A.
Worst teacher I have ever had, no help on hw, teaches off his slides which have nothing to do with his hw. tells u to "read the book" when you ask him questions. Attendance is mandatory. Expects 0% on turn it in, takes off points for every percent. Wanders off topic, confuses himself a lot, never able to answer questions for students. DO NOT TAKE!!
Mr.Aviles is truly a well organized preofessor. He expects you to learn the material and memorize a lot of terms and theories. It is a difficult subject, and honestly is not his fault that he might be seen as a hard or boring teacher. But over all he is a good professor who has a lot of knowledge. I strongly recommend him.
His class was pretty easy only one paper (be sure to follow apa format 100%!) homework was online and he got a lot of the test questions from the homework. lots of notes though but he puts them all online. he is really strict with attendence, but over all not a bad class.
I love Dr. Aviles! I think he's hilarious. The class is a lot of writing, but he makes it fun by cracking jokes and letting students talk and share their experiences. You can't be absent, or even tardy at that. Just do all the homework, come to class and take notes and you should pass.
The 3 exam are base on the homework and notes so just study those and you will mostly likely score high on his exam.Apa research paper grades really hard marks you for every little thing. Show up to class every day and be on time or he will drop you in front of the hole class. But every time i went to class and he explained the notes it made more e
Don't waste your time with him. Unless you have to because its your major requirements. His grading is odd, he will tell you this class is hard. He gets side tracked very easily, and will say the most random or inapproiate stuff. He is useless considering he has higher education. NOT IMPRESSIVE WILL PUT YOU TO SLEEP even psych majors want to sleep
Dr. aviles is a preaty hard teacher he expects a lot from you, the paper he makes you wright will never be perfect! attend to all extra credit !!! hes striked on attendence, he read off the slides and HW is online, overall hes a okay teacher but he expects little too much and everything to be perfect
Worst professor I've ever had!!!!Don't know how this professor is teaching or even has a PhD.He seems confused when hes teaching. Does not answer any questions in regards to the ssubject. Seems confused about what he is teaching.I suggest if he is the only option try taking the course somewhere else, you will not pass the class with a good grade!
Dr. Aviles has gone above and beyond to make sure that the student has every opportunity to actually learn something and to pass. HW is given online along with quizzes. If you can't pass the class you should rethink the whole college thing. He does need to move away from relying on the ppt slides so that all the classes are not in the dark.
Good professor. Is nice and is completely open to answer questions. has power points for every chapter that you can print out, hw online, and a big research paper. For this paper, take up his offer of having him read it two weeks before it's due because APA style gets a bit complicated. He can be a big help. tests have some homework Qs.
Aviles is a pretty good teacher. Hw every week, but it all basically comes off the notes. Tests are based on the hw and the exams are based on the hw assignments also. One research paper due at the end of the semester. You dont really need the book. He tries to make class funny.
I have never disliked a teacher so much before. I take amazing notes and still did not do well in the class. On the Homework and Exams he likes to change his word use and it confused me terribly. The exams don't relate to the hw. Do not recommend. He also treats students like they are in jr. high. Worst teacher ever.
Jerk. Strict attendance, assigned an "APA" paper that he didn't grade according to APA formatting standards, homework is often way too easy for the tests, meaning you miss what to study. Very glad I don't have to take him any more. Has a degree in social psych, but teaches BIO?? You can tell it is not his strong suit.
loved his class. it was so interesting to me and he's really enthusiastic about the lectures. we didnt use the book. Do all the test and homework online and do your final paper ahead of time so you can get the best grade possible because thats basically your grade:)
Not sure how he is for Psy 101, but for 201 he is terrible! He's pretty much useless and does not know what he's talking about. You have to heavily rely on the textbook. EACH hw is 50 questions and only worth 10pts each. A different teacher should definitely be this course!
Very strict on attendance and being to class on time. Teaches straight off a power pt. If your major is Psychology I'd recommend taking someone else. I didn't really learn anything.
Very organized, strict, Kind of boring, Kind of funny.
If you like teachers that let you slack off this is not the guy. If your into the material and psychology is your major this is the guy. His power points and homework are exactly what's on the test and a PhD from USC, how can it get any better?
Really nice guy. Gives opportunities for extra credit. But 201 is definitely not his forte and it shows. He teaches directly off the powerpoints and has them available for download. He uses blackboard and posts test scores almost immediately. He is structured, organized, compassionate, and a little strange in a funny way.
Dr. Aviles is far most the most awful teacher I ever dealt with at AVC. He is closed minded, not well aware of his subject, a power point teacher that doesn?t have full grasp of Physiological Psychology. He was never able to answer a question properly. Unfortunately he was the only one teaching Psych 201. I hated the class-BORING!!!
Too much "busy" work. His powerpoints are long and don't cover the entire chapter, or everything on the tests. The only extra credit he offers is if you take part in his Psychology Club activities.
Don't get me wrong, this man is very nice. He has a PhD from USC but he seems confused when teaching. His lectures are dry and he's a powerpoint user. Tests are straight from the homework questions so if you do it, you're going to do fine in his lecture.
I took his online class and hardly learned anything. There was not much interaction. I usually take online courses and I do Good but this was my worst experience. He is not very involved. He gives a lot of homework!!!
Great teacher, simple work, and very clear on what's expected.
Dr. Aviles is well organized. Come to class on time, be respectful, read his PPTs, take tests online. If that is too much to ask of you, please don't blame this enthusiastic professor. Take the paper seriously, this is the challenging part of his course. Use Smarthinking and the writing center as resources. You will come out a better student.
Funny, strict, and uses powerpoints(which is ok)
He is a very good professor, however his lectures are boring. Recommend printing or doing notes before class or you won't learn anything. The test are straight from the homework. Very easy class and an enjoyable semester.
Really enthusiastic professor. Uses ppt and 25 question homework for each chapter. Not too difficult just keep up.
Professor Aviles uses blackboard for homework. Make sure you use the power points and book to complete the homework and you should have no problem. His tests tend to be based off some homework questions. So study your homework. He assigns one paper and I suggest working with him as you do it to recieve a good grade. He does assign extra credit.
Easy class just study. There's 3 exams and one paper, definaetly recommend doing the paper and attending the dr phil show he assigns for extra credit! It will boost your final grade tremendously. You dont have to pay for the class book! Overall, study the powerpoints for homework and the three tests. Don't miss class :)
The homework is on blackboard, do the homework and you'll Ace the test. The test questions come directly from it. He explains everything is relate-able, he opens up and gives real life examples. He is easy going, his paper is clear-cut. The tests are simple he even gives you the easy questions ahead of time. Only thing is BE ON TIME. Easy A
Dr. Aviles is a good person, however his lectures are very boring and off the book. All you ready need to do is study your hw and read to pass his class. He highly encourages participation (it is a grade). You are tested on the hw questions. Post note: BUY the international ed. of the book! It's so much better and cheaper)
Great professor, well informed! Homework is online and Exams are about 75% of the homework. There are sometimes short essay questions on the test, which he will tell the class before the exam. He does give extra credit for a various amount of reasons. He does have 1 research paper that is done in APA style, really cares about citations/format.
Amazing teacher! The class is not hard at all. The test is based off hw questions, so if you do the hw then you should pass the test with ease. He's really nice and funny, always had the class laughing. He's one of the reasons I changed my major to psychology. He made it very interesting and now I love psychology!
Literally the worst teacher for this class. Not much knowledge but the obvious. He talked down about his wife a lot. Went off topic sooo much it was irritating and then brings your participation down for not discussing irrelevant things. Will get an A for going to all extra credit events because they're worth a lot but it's totally unfair.
Professor Aviles is a good choice if you don't want to put in too much effort. He's a good professor but the tests are straight from the online quizzes. I've had several classes with him and the only one that was slightly difficult was an honors course.
I hate to give a teacher such a low review but this man stressed me out the whole semester just to fail me by a few points spring 2017
As long as you study his notes for the tests, youll pass. Only two tests and some homework before the tests. (Tip: study the homework he gives for the tests. Every single question on the test is a repeat of the homework)
A really great teacher! Inspired me to study further into Psychology!
He even admits that PSY 201 is a hard course. He gives homework that is all due on test days. 2 tests, and one final he doesnt give out a study guide but I recommend studying the homework questions. He also gives extra credit but its attending events which not everyone can attend to.
Mr Aviles is a great teacher, first he seemed grumpy but he is actually a nice person. He was clear on what needed to be done, gave lots of extra credit. He explained things with examples so the info could be understood. He gave us all the tools needed to write a research paper it was my first time ever writing a paper and i was able to manage a B.
Attendance is mandatory, the way to learn is through his lectures and he explains his powerpoints a lot so that we could understand topics better. I took him for PSY 201 and the only hard part was waking up in the morning to get to class at 8am because if you are tardy 8 times or absent 3 times, you will be dropped. He is very picky at formatting.
He was a good professor. There were three test i received a two Cs and one D and still passed the class with an A. Go to all extra credit opportunities and do the homework and you be fine. the test questions are like 50% of the test.
I will never have a class with this guy again. Thankfully.
His lectures are boring most of the time, sometimes its interesting but hes a cool professor. Not too difficult just do the homework, take notes, and youll be fine.
Worst psych professor Ive ever taken and I took him for 2 psych classes do not take him if you love psychology hell make you want to change your major.
He was ok I suppose. He often derailed the lecture by talking about his personal life a lot. Often would get emotional but other than that, his lectures are pretty straightforward. Do the hw and extra credit and you'll be fine. The hw is the study guide. You'll pass this class but will probably be bored or annoyed in class
One of the best professors Ive had, Dr. Aviles is very straight forward on what he expects but hes also very compassionate for his students. I think hes fair on grading, and I learned so much in his class because he was not boring. He was not monotone, and always kept things interesting. Totally recommend!!!
His class was okay, but he always related the lectures to his personal life which made him emotional.
These ratings are 50/50 of Dr. Aviles as great or awful which makes him a good professor because of mixed reviews. He's very straight forward & the lectures are always available on canvas. Impossible to not pass. He does get emotional with the correlation of lectures with personal life, but that's what makes him real and knowledgeable.
Despite the negative reviews he's a cool professor. The tests are easy as long as you do the hw. Lectures are all on canvas. 1 research paper don't procrastinate on it, and triple check your apa format. Also, he offers easy extra credit. Definitely would take him again!
Work is easy Dr aviles cares about students would take him again he is available outside class Dr aviles rocks
The class and tests were straightforward. Do the homework, take notes, and you have yourself an easy A. However, this professor likes to shoehorn in his political opinions at every chance. He isn't shy about dropping in sexual topics in areas where it isn't necessary. Also, be prepared for him to go off on tangents in every class.
Dr. Aviles is a good professor. However, his attention to detail isnt great sometimes. Some syllabus due dates were wrong. Additionally, not all of the homework question answers can be found in lecture PowerPoint. I recommend using reserve textbooks in the library (take photos of chapters needed). Lastly, I learned a lot in this interesting class!
Notes, hw, and quizzes, and other assignments are on canvas. Reading the free online textbook isn't necessary, but recommended. Lectures in class make you understand the topic more; doable online since we transferred due to covid. The hw helps you pass the tests but you cant pass the hw unless you understand the notes. Participation helps.
He is a cool professor. His class is very manageable and easy. Lectures are heavy so prepare but nothing you can't handle. Definitely will take him again.
Professor is a awful person. He does not care about students, does not encourage psychology majors, does not offer clarification or guidance on assignments. Wants a very specific research paper but does not tell you exactly what he wants. He doesn't care about his class and they end a month before the semester is over. Every test is online
He was respectful during the whole COVID switch from class to online. It was easy to pass his class and he was very nice
Gives thorough lectures that rarely get tiring. You will have to study these lectures for exams. Has a research paper near the end of the semester that he explains in full detail and provides an example. Overall solid professor, however the class page on Canvas could use a bit of work on to be more visually easy to navigate.
I've taken this professor for three different upper-level psychology classes and have never really been too impressed. There are always three exams with questions that don't match well with the material from the lecture or from the book. He also assigns one paper and is an extremely tough grader, so email him your draft. He accepts no late work.
He's an OK Professor. Tough grader on the research paper. Other than that the work is easy.
Good professor overall. The hardest thing about this course was the research paper but it wasn't too bad as long as you don't procrastinate. The tests he assigns are easy (it's just stuff from the lectures so pay attention). Only bad thing I would say is that he tends to talk about his personal life often, but to me it made class more interesting
Dr. Aviles is a great professor who gives very passionate leactes. He is very open and honest about the different stages of life so it may cause you to reflect on your own mortality. The test and exams are doable but take detailed notes and he uses two types of textbooks, one of which is online. There is also an APA essay DON'T PROCRASTINATE!
He talks about politics and his personal beliefs and political views in class. As an immigrant who has come to this country and received his Ph.D. given the opportunity to grow, you would think he would like this country but all he does talk us down and complain about the system. Unfortunately, no one stops our educators from wrongdoing.
Professor Aviles is great at teaching. The only thing we did in class was listening to him lecture. He keeps it interesting by using anecdotes and jokes. The homework assignments are all multiple choice, as are the tests. I personally skipped the research paper and will end with a high grade. There is absolutely no late work, so don't procrastinate
Overall the class was really easy. He gives you the outline of how the class is going to be during the first week 2 exams 1 essay and homework due before the exam Easy. However the lecture is quite boring and you dont even need the book. My class was half online half in person so everyone took the the exam online it is timed but the homework helps
I took Professor Aviles PSY232 class and enjoyed it. Honestly just do the assignments/pay attention to lectures and you'll be fine. There is a research paper which he does take seriously don't procrastinate on it/be prepared! He does mention his personal life in class but I liked that because it helped me understand the concepts we talked about.
Professor Aviles tried to make the class fun when he could and add jokes or talk about his life which I enjoyed. Homework and tests were straightforward. Only problem I had was the paper. I got a C on the paper and it dragged my grade down. He didn't put any feedback on it even after I asked. Felt pretty confident about that one too.
Homework quizzes, 3 Exams and 1 paper. Homework quizzes are all do before exams and they are not timed. For the paper he gives many different examples on how to do it on canvas and takes the time to really explain. He records all lectures in case you miss a class. Honestly best psy teacher ever took him for a lot of classes. Everything is online
Professor Aviles is very passionate about what he does. He incorporates his personal life and makes funny jokes keeping his lectures fun and engaging. Don't procrastinate and you will be ok. Take his class, great professor !!
The reviews are not it, professor Aviles is actually very sweet. Although his lectures take up the majority of the class he makes them funny and engaging. All the hw is due before the test date so you have all time to complete he does have you complete a paper which is a big part of your grade so don't procrastinate. Would recommend!!
This Professor is 'okay' overall but for the record, I am not going to take his class anymore. He's indeed approachable, but doesn't care about your growth as his student. He's very strict at research projects but doesn't ACTUALLY teach you what to do, bummer. I took him regardless of the bad reviews, that was my biggest mistake. never again!
Although he does read off of the slides he goes in depth and makes sure that you understand the material. there are 3 exams and all the homework is due before each exam. Study the homework and you will pass his exam. He would get off topic sometimes but overall I enjoyed his stories. He has a great sense of humor.
Hw that are like quizzes, 1 research paper, and 3 Exams with 100 questions. Every day we review notes in class which gets really boring and he's very strict on attendance.
The class is as long as you are constantly paying attention in class and studying. I never got above a 65 on tests but got A's on the homework which is online and still got a B. IF YOU CAN TAKE ANOTHER CLASS OR TEACHER DO IT!
This class was super easy there are 2 homework assignments for every chapter and then the test. You don't get a study guide but he does tell you the short answer questions. IF YOU CAN TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER DO IT!
This professor stuck to everything he said in the syllabus and even gave extra credit twice during the year. You have 1 essay, hw every weekend, 4 quizzes total. I loved his online class it was very easy. He provides both slides and videos, sometimes even putting quiz answers in the videos!
Professor Aviles' lectures are all over the place, he seems a bit scatter brained. He doesn't give good feedback on assignments. The syllabus is all over the place. I should have seen the reviews before I took his class. Never Again!
Dr. Aviles is, well... a character, but he really knows his stuff. He's kind of tough when it comes to the writing portions of the tests as well as the paper, but you get used to it. He also has this extra credit assignment toward the end which can really cushion your grade, but overall, he's adequate.
This was my second time taking him and I would do it again. You are graded based on exams, hw, quizzes, & a paper. The hw is literally your study guide and he says that multiple times. I like that he uses his own life experiences and applies it to what we are learning so that we can really get a grasp on how psych applies to the real world.
Intentionally difficult. Assignments due at 8am. He does not allow make-ups. Sent proof of an injury, still not given grace. Submitted additional work, he took off points. Only give him what he asks for. Last semester was my last semester.D I received have both my degrees being. He is the head of the psych department and only online instructor.
It's ironic for a professor with quizzes FOUNDED on Quizlet penalizes minor student errors (couple of "plagiarism") without a second chance—highlighting the need for reform. AVC should prioritize faculty evaluation through student feedback, not faculty self-assessment. Who would make negative feedbacks to themselves anyway?
big warning to people for taking this class, if you're looking for an easy pass this guy is for you but as someone who was looking for an exceptional college experience Aviles was highly lacking compared to some of the other fantastic professors at AVC.
Professor was really understanding, he also explains the lectures well and simple where everyone can understand. He gives a lot of extra credit and you can ask him questions when you don't understand something and he explains it good. Professor has a strong personality so if he jokes around don't take it to heart. Overall was a good class
1 paper. Lecture heavy and doesn't stay on topic. Every lecture is a segway for a discussion on his ex wife and kids especially his son. Many inappropriate comments and topics he'd randomly bring up. 3 exams. Study homework q&a. Continually threaten grades if you use AI. States he's an AI detection expert. Doesn't like being challenged or wrong.
I took this professor because I thought his rating wasn't too bad. I took two classes of his back to back. So I listened to him ramble/vent about his Ex wife, his kids, life, dating life for four hours straight. That was a huge mistake. He would make comments about women about their physical appearance, women dating habits, his tests were bad too.
He's a nice guy but, made inappropriate comments about women's appearance with makeup. Women's mental health statistics. Ranted about Ex Wife, kids, dating life. Tests were hard. He made the written test questions in class. You had to be there to know them. Long lectures/power points. Hard to pay attention in class. He was chill and nice though.
He uses anecdotes about his life to help us understand concepts, which makes sense for a psych class, but some stories were a bit too personal; and he includes his opinions on topics that shouldn't be discussed in a classroom setting in my opinion. Expect to share your life stories with the class so they can analyze you. Participation is mandatory!
Professor Aviles keeps the class engaging with his personal stories and humor. While the workload can be manageable, the paper can be tricky. Unstuckstudy proved helpful for preparing for exams alongside the course materials.
I took Aviles for PSY 101 & 236. Both classes were ran the same with homework assignments of multiple choice questions (20-25 questions) every week, 3 exams (80-100 questions) and one paper. The course work itself was not challenging and his class was fine. However, he wasn't accommodating/understanding and is not the friendliest or nicest person.
Rude, unprofessional, and doesn't care the slightest about his students. Save yourself the trouble and enroll in any other psychology course. Announces extra credit opportunities in the beginning of the semester but then changes his mind later on. The least you could do as a professor is stick to your word.
Just, take another professor!
Uhh I think professors are writing bad reviews on their own page to get less than average students not to take their class haha. Keep that in mind.
Don't take this class if you don't know how to properly study. I would say his class is LECTURE HEAVY. His exams aren't hard if you show up to class, pay attention to the lectures, and study. Attendance is mandatory for his class, he drops you if you're absent a lot. He's actually a nice guy, I wasn't too sure about him at first. HW is also easy.
There are a lot of lectures in his class. Be prepared to study for exams. The homework is easy. Overall an easy class you just have to do the work.
Dr. Aviles knows his stuff. He is smart. He knows his stuff. As long as you do your work and take yourself and your work seriously you will do well. If you miss a lot you will get dropped. All HW before exam due 8am day of exams. So no excuse to not get it done. Don't procrastinate on group project. Read the syllabus. Do the work. You'll be good!
He spent most of class venting about his divorce than actually teaching. Not very understanding when it comes to late work but overall the assignments were pretty easy, I learned a lot from his class. It was just hard to take good notes because as I said he mostly went on tangents about his ex wife. I'd only take him again i had no other choice
