Can't understand at all... Horrible professor

This professor has stolen my will to derive, integrate or otherwise calculate. "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."
all of the below, did not understand lectures, could not understand her explanations, she could not understand my questions. I love math and this was the first time that I felt I did not want to do math anymore. I hate my life
Honestly, worst teacher ever. Mumbles constantly, talks and writes way too fast, and never stops for questions. I would not recommend this course or professor to ANYONE. If you are thinking about taking a class that she teaches, just don't. Try to take it with a different professor.
Smart person, who cannot teach. Enough said. Terrible teacher. Makes the material more difficult than it is, no clarity, doesn't show interest or concern for students. Do not take this course, good luck doing well...
Run away...
Writes up notes really fast and does not go over the same thing twice. You have to be on your feet the entire class or get hopelessly behind. I think this is her first year, so I would give her some credit. Weekly homework, class average on test 40%. Think she is usually a 21B teacher who they dropped down to 16B.
I am good at math, never got below an A in those classes, but with her I got a D. If you go to her class, don't listen to her, just write what is on the board and look over it later because it is hard to understand her and she makes things way more confusing. Both me and my 3 friends are failing that class. Listen to all comments, they are true.
Good teacher, she's hard to understand at first, but she is definitely very smart. You have to make sure to read the MAT108 book while taking it with her as well as attending the lectures.
She is very hard for students who does not like proofs. She knows the stuff, but cannot teach it to the class. Also, she grades hard on the tests. She gives tons of HW, average 20-30 problems per week. The good side is that she curves. I gotten a B on the first test, C on the second test, and fail the final. I still got a C for the class.
not worth your time to take her class. if you like your gpa, take any other professor.
Very smart teacher, but lectures were hard to understand. The good thing is that she teaches right out of the book, sometimes word-for-word. The bad side was that the class average was as low as the ages of her students. Luckily, she grades fairly, so a bad final might not have as big of an impact on your grade as you'd think.
Prof. Liu was extremely helpful, both in office hours, additional class handouts, and in e-mails to students. She clearly made an effort to teach the course well this quarter, and yes, it's hard, but it's supposed to be hard. I think some of the criticism is unfair. I recommend her.
A lot of people didn't like her but honestly once you get used to her accent she's as good a teacher as any. I think a lot of people think that she made the class hard, but the subject itself is hard no matter who teaches it.
Her accent is really heavy, but her teaching is very clear. Basically, its like a high school calculus class over again, but throw in some new concepts calculus AB didn't go over and BAM, you just study a bit and review some old things and an easy grade is earned! The class average also keys into your overall grade.
She's an excellent teacher.
Professor Liu taught me when I took 21A. Her tests are challenging. But I learned a lot from her. And I got an A. :)
Her class is very easy, just go over the examples of each chapter or class notes and you have no problem with exams. Discussion is mandatory because you need to take quiz. HW is a lot compare to other professors'. Go to her office hour if u need help.
Prof. Liu definitely knows her stuff and the notes will explain everything if you go to class and pay attention. She assigns a lot of hw though(more than other 22a teachers). She drops the lowest hw score tho. If you get a 65%, you are guaranteed a C-. webwork=15%, written hw=15%, midterms=15% each (2 of them), final=40% highly reccomend taking her
I didn't go to lecture, but her exams are mostly computational. Likes fill in the blank questions. gaussian elimation on about every exam. collected homework problems are hard. pretty nice curve. My 69% was a C-.
I try to always judge a teacher on how much they try to help you. She is always there at her office hours and she really cares and tries to answer all questions. If you don't get it go to her OH. She goes over examples on the board and writes as she speaks so you have time to write out stuff. She does not use a useless powerpoints or go fast.
If you're bad at math, don't take her class. If you have, then you should be okay. Brace yourself for the thick, and difficult to understand accent. If you study practice exams you'll be fine. Good luck ,Good skill.
She is not good at lecturing...although she realy cares about helping her students, her explanations only make you more confused. I had a friend who did not even show up to the lectures and got an A in the class. Just study the practice tests shes gives you and you will get an A in the class.
She is super sweet. Hard to understand. quizes easy, midterms and final just like practice tests. HW optional but DO IT ANYWAY. I found this class reasonable because I took AP Calc in highschool, if you didnt take it before, you will have to put in a lot more work. If you are familiar with Calc, you can handle this.
She is really nice and sweet, the only problem is that she is really unclear in her lectures, and she is really conceptual in the way she teaches. She goes over too many proofs in her lectures. Also she is a pretty tough grader, and likes to make sure you show ALL work otherwise you don't get full points. Only take this class if you took AP Calc
She is a good professor in her own right. I found her easy to learn from (and that's saying a lot for me; my mind does not take calculus very well). Attend lecture, ask questions. Sure, she has tough tests, but she is fair. Pay attention, and you should be able to get the material.
Kind and smart, but didn't find lectures too helpful. If you took Calc in high school or like the subject you'll be find. Study the practice tests, and go to TA office hours. High standards on showing work, be warned.
She explains the material clearly.
She teaches exactly what will be on the test. And her tests are very clear. She has study guides that are super useful. I attended most lectures but texted through them. It was kind of hard to understand her with her accent.
Great class, shows examples and exams are similar to the method problems in HW. Her tests have fill in the blank like she really wants you to learn and have fun with the material. Office hours are helpful and she is easy to talk to. Gives you a study guide on what to focus on for exams. Overall this class is great because she gives so much support.
One of the best math professors I've had. Lectures are extremely organized; my notes were actually helpful for studying and homework! Very helpful in office hours - she really cares about her students. Tests are fair and mostly like the homework. Her final was harder, but the curve is very generous. Language barrier was rarely if ever a problem.
Really nice and helpful professor. Office hour extremely helpful. Materials covered are generally difficult, but exams are reasonable and reflect what were taught in class. Doing the hw is important in understanding the materials. One hw assignment per week, solution is posted after it's due so you can check your hw. Proof heavy course.
She's does not explain things well, is not very helpful when it comes to homework, and will put you to sleep multiple times. Lovely woman, but boring and unhelpful.
Hw is really hard, lectures don't help at all. Personally, I think taking math 145 with her is the hardest course among 8 upper div math courses I have token. I need to study on my own to finish the hw and do well on the exams. She didn't explain much, all she did was writing supper fast on the boards while reading her notes like a robot.
Her class is really hard! I know many students dropped or late pnp after the first midterm. HW are really hard and I even didn't understand the solutions.
Hardest class I've taken at UCD. Lectures spent copying down notes in confusion. HW is devastatingly hard. Study the HW solutions, read the book, show as much work as possible on your HW, explain everything, and you will get by.
This class was a lot harder than it is supposed to be. Her teaching style is one-dimensional; she spends more time copying her notes onto the board than she does teaching the material. She did not post her notes online no matter how many times we asked. She has good intentions, but this is a professor to avoid.
Not clear, very boring. Homeworks are 10x harder than the lecture material, with no help given. Really bad teacher overall, despite being a nice woman.
Difficult yet fair. I enjoyed the ride.
Prof. Liu cares about her students and is very friendly. Do the homework assignments, yes they are long but they are mandatory and they help prepare you for the tests!! The hardest part of the class was the amount of homework given, but at least they are worth a lot of points, so it's not just tests making up the grade. Hard grader but fair.
The best mathematic professor I have ever taken in UC Davis. Really helpful and do caring about every students. Although there are many hw, but these hws prepared you well for the test. If you can do the hws, you can get an A for the tests. Easy grader, I got 91.6% for the cumulative grade but 79% is already an A. Definitely take her class!
She is one of the best professors in math department. I totally boomed the first midterm(C-). But through hard work, I eventually get an A in the final and she gives an A- for the class. She is a tough grader. Class is a lot of work, but not hard and grade is fair. If you put in effort and trying you will learn a lot, and get a grade you deserve.
Office hour is extremely helpful. Materials is hard but she makes them easy. Fair grading. Paying efforts can earn an A.
Professor Liu is really knowledgable. She takes teaching seriously and she really making sure you will learn the material. Yes, there are a lot of hws, but if you understand them, you will do well in the test. Office hour is helpfully and fun. Recommend take her class.
First math professor in college teaching a UHP Math 21B course. Fantastic, clear lectures. HW from textbook plus proofs. Asked me to meet her in OH to see if I was ok/suggest new study habits. How study: redo every hw problem. Failed first midterm bc I was convinced I didn't need to study after getting a 5 in AP Calc AB in hs, don't do this.
She's caring and is exceptionally knowledgeable of the material. The grading in her class could be really tough at times and precise to the point of annoyance. She assigns lots of homework also. Her communication over email can be really vague, so it's best to ask her questions in person. Tests were slightly less difficult than the homeworks.
Grade is fair. Exams are not difficult. The whole class is well structured and organized. She is also very helpful if you have any questions.
Fu's lectures were sometimes a little too fast to keep up with, but they were very organized and structured. Assigns A LOT of homework., just be prepared to learn things on your own. Helpful in office hours so go to them. Midterms and final were VERY fair; could study the practice tests and be quite prepared.
Lectures are fast, but VERY organized and straightforward. A lot of HW, but it's very good practice for exams. Grading is harsh but precise, as is required by the nature of the subject. Exams were very fair. If you studied a lot you could definitely get A's. People who didn't study did horribly though. Professor was very kind and friendly as well.
Standard lecture format, with HW every week. Grading criteria on homework is almost subjective, but that is more the fault of her TA and not her. She also has a very thick accent, which makes it difficult for English speakers to understand her. If you're not already an expert with the material this can make the class even harder.
Overall, just a boring old teacher. She pretty much reads from the textbook and doesn't supplement anything. Expects you to memorize and move on with life. Sweet lady but meh professor.
Normal lecture. Good practice exams.
Con: Class is very lecture heavy. Essentially reads the textbook word for word during class. Pro: Supplies sufficient study materials and exams are fair.
I found it pretty hard to follow her lectures because she basically copies the textbook, but her tests are similar to the practice test. She's very detailed when grading but fair. Also the final is 50% of grade.
I personally found it a little difficult to understand her during lecture because she has an accent, but I think most people would be fine understanding her. If you do strongly depend on auditory instruction like I do, you might be a bit frustrated. She does not grade homework, but trust me, do the homework. My 62% curved to a C+.
Very clear Prof. Tells us what we should expect on quizzes and her practice exams help a lot for knowing whats on actual exams. She curves a fair bit and NEVER throws anything out of the ordinary on her tests. Homework problems are good indicators of what is tested on. Overall very fair expectations of her students which isnt common in 21 series
She basically reads the book for her lectures. If you know calculus coming in or are pretty good at math, this class shouldn't be too bad. Just go over the optional homework problems, practice exams, and read the examples from the book and you should be good for her exams. She curves a decent amount too.
She lectured way too fast for me (a guy who is not mathematically inclined). That being said, the tests were very ordinary for a calculus class. I bombed the crap out of every test because I didn't study/am stupid and still ended up with a C+ so there is a hefty curve.
Straightforward. Lectures straight from the textbook. Understood the formulas, but concepts were less thoroughly covered. ie: learned a lot of "recipes" but not where they came from. Do the hw, study the practice exams and you should be ok. She's nice. Generous grader. Side note: people make fun of her in class, especially her accent. Not cool. :(
Liu's lectures are very organized but she is sometimes hard to understand. The quizzes we took in section were worth only 2 pts so it was hard to do well on them. The tests were very challenging but if you devote A LOT of your time to the class to do the homework, redo those problems before tests, and master the content, you will succeed.
class was pretty difficult. homework wasn't collected but it's good practice. about 6-7 quizzes in discussion and lowest one is dropped. Kind of hard to understand her with her accent tho.. first midterm was okay but second midterm and final were very difficult. generous curve at the end.
Don't take her while doing 16+ credits. I did 17 credits and just didn't have the time needed to do that well. It's extremely difficult to pass the quizzes and tests are hard too. It takes way more time than just doing the homework and practice exams to do well in this class. She's a good lecturer but you have to go into more depth after class.
One of the strictest professor I have met in UC Davis. The lecture goes fast but organized. The first midterm is ok, but the second one and final are hard. The grading criteria is strict but clear. Even though I am only 0.3 from A, I am not able to get any curve.
PLEASE DONT TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU WANNA PASS MAT 108
Definitely a hard class with lots of homework. Hard to understand at first but over time you get use to it. There is a lot of material and lectures are really fast. Tough grader but there's a curve at the end of the quarter. Need to put in the work for a good grade.
She goes extremely fast during lectures and leaves a lot for you to figure out. Your grade is dependent on quizzes, midterms, and finals. She assigns a lot of homework but it's optional. If you don't have the time to put in a lot of effort into this class, you won't do well. Very meticulous and tough when it comes to grading.
Pf Liu is very intelligent and will help you become a great proof writer. She demands a high level of precision, which is expected of anyone who wishes to pursue pure maths. She is fair in her grading and her lectures are very helpful, definitely worth going to. The homeworks can tend to be long, but she will help you if you show up to office hours
Its incredibly hard to understand her, not to mention her final is 50% of the grade. She could at least grade our homework so we could balance it out but she doesnt do that. She Wont answer any questions in class. Sometimes she makes TAs cover lecture material in discussion.
Her lectures are very organized and she goes really fast. Her accent can be hard to understand at times and she does not grade homework. The averages on midterms have been 60-65% and really difficult. I felt like I understood all the material but the tests were just really really hard.
Her lectures were organized, clear and fast paced. She also tended to gloss over explanations for concepts but provide useful examples. Handouts providing more detail for some of the difficult topics were helpful. Homework is not collected. Practice tests and assigned homework problems are similar in style to the midterms and exams.
Everything she wrote on board is very clear and organized. Her notes are excellent materials for reviewing. Everyday's homework contains a lots of problems, usually takes 3-4 hrs to finish. Homework has varies types of problems. If hw is ok tests are ok. midterm is very similar to practice midterm. Final is cumulative, but are all easy and typical.
Very organized and responsible professor but this course due to its nature is just too hard for me. I took p/np so was satisfied with my grade. No mandatory homework, quizzes are only 6%, the rest 94% is 2 midterms and final. Midterms and final are a lot like the practice exam.
Everyday, I prayed to be hit by the Unitrans bus so I wouldn't make it to her class. To give some perspective, I would raise my hand in the front row, make eye contact with her, and she would ignore me. If you can avoid taking her, do it and protect your brain cells.
I hated this class SO MUCH. Her lecture style is erratic and nervous and she simply tries to squeeze way too much in to the class. I was constantly waiting for it to be over, starting to check the time 20 mins in. My friends and I HAD to read the book to understand. Test avg was always failing, but they are rlly similar to practices. Final is 50%.
Nightmare. I am a 3.5 math major student and I find her really bad at teaching conceptual math stuff. She speaks out of the textbook and does not digest the information for you. Her style of teaching is similar to what I have experienced in a chinese high school. Straightforward but doesn't really make students understand the content. Avoid!
Got a 99% in MAT21A with another professor last quarter. Now, I have to put in hours of additional work just to understand the topics with Fu Liu. Avoid this prof if you can!!!! Grades homework very strict and there's no way to check your answers. Why am I being tested on my hw??? Also - she literally just reads off slides which make no sense
She was too bad that I want to give her a 0.
Her homework are ungodly long so be prepared to spend hours or even days to complete her homework. She compacts so much in one lecture you don't even have time to process the information. It's best if you just read the textbook or watch videos on how to do it.
As a lecturer she is a mixed bag. There are some things she can explain well, but there are also some concepts she unessecarily overcomplicates. My major gripe with her is that she is extremely picky with her grading, which brings the grade down even if you are technically solving the problem correctly.
Super knitPicky with grading. Even my TA was somewhat frustrated with how she manages to take points off on homework even if you get the right answer. When it comes to doing problems a certain way, its her way or the highway and if you dont solve it EXACTLY how she does it, your grade is going to suffer.
Grades unnecessarily hard and takes off points for the most useless items, which is pretty ironic considering she has more typos in her lectures than I can count. Overcomplicates the topics for no reason. Overall horrible proffessor.
She barely knows what she's doing and makes so many mistakes throughout her lectures and resources. she holds zero responsibility over anything and delegates everything to the students. her accent is impossible to comprehend and she stutters so much. absolutely unprofessional and has no intentions for students success.
Based on the lack of clarity of the subject matter, students are asked to solve problems in a tedious and useless way to complete the easiest way in the textbook. Because of the inefficient and superfluous way of submitting assignments and the subjective mode of grading exams, I would never recommend taking her class.
If you are still looking for mat course, do not choose her, even Koeppe is better than her, she has a lot of homework and very difficult midterm. Her practice exam had nothing related to her midterm, and she provides 40 min for six questions with many small part. She only considers her steps, even you get correct answer, you won't get full mark
AVOID if you can. Taking points away from your homework because of not following a certain Prof. Liu's way to solve them or even because of the wrong format(I have to do some ridiculous thing like submitting a blank "additional page" just to get the full points). Exams are hard and only graded based on 5 questions.
This course is so stressful. If you really do her homework, its gonna be around 60 problems per week. And always losing a dozen points because your small small errors in your steps everytime. Midterm is below 40 mins, you have to rush as fast as you can. the test, the class average is falling.
I have always considered myself to be an above-average math student. I got As in calc AB and BC in high school and got above 100% in MAT21A. Take those qualifications as you will when I say that this is the most challenging math class I have ever taken and the first one where I am struggling to even score above the mean. DO NOT TAKE MAT21B WITH LIU
Math 21B with Fu Liu is a huge struggle. She is not the best at explaining concepts. The midterm average is an F. Then, there’s graded homework which is harsh. I pray that there’s a generous curve at the end of the quarter.
Instead of asking students to review their performance on their exams and evaluate whether their studying strategy is effective, Fu needs to reevaluate whether her teaching method is effective as it clearly isn't. She might as well change her name to Foolery instead.
Lectures straight from the textbook, homework and tests are very strictly graded, you have to do it exactly the way she wants you to earn full credit. Material is tough enough as is, Liu's lectures are usually very technical and have few examples (examples which are not usually explained well). Averages on both midterms are failing grades
The midterm exam she assigns has many questions and must be completed in a very short period of time. Those midterm and final count the majority percentage of grading. She makes the lecture becomes hard to understand. Avoid her!!!
Don't take her class, even if she is the only one available!!!!! Just wait until next quarter!!! Grades are only based on her solution, if done in another method, you will be incorrect. Especially for those who learned another method or beginners!!!!!!
typical math class no different than others. We did have extra lessons than the other 21b class but wasn't to bad. Rarely ever went to lecture mostly online self study and sometime watched recorded lecture. Assigns lots of practice problems from text book that aren't really mandatory and are great practice. Test are fast paced
If you want your GPA F-ed (pun intended), you're in for a treat. Homework will drive you crazy and tests are straightup impossible. Class average is 65% if that's what matters to you.
Quite honestly the worst instructional experience I have ever had so far in my life. She gives lectures like she's trying to prove to you how quickly she can do math, and usually doesn't give proper answers to questions. Also practice tests are useless, whatever is on the practice is almost always never on the exam. A definite 0/10.
I rarely went to her lecture, because my classmate don't understand a word she says But according to the homework she gave I think she had a horrible teaching skill at the homework, she cannot give a proper solution by herself. Her 2 midterm exam were nearly impossible to finish, the only mercy she gives is the final. chaozhi Ren
The class itself is by far the hardest math class I’ve taken and i even took AP calc in highschool. The professor herself seemed nice, but her tests and homework were very difficult with the average being a failing grade. I understood the concepts themselves but applying them was very difficult during the short testing period.
Class is like every other mat 21b class, actually found her class easier compared to my friends taking 21b with 4 star professors. Homework come from the textbook and is sometimes harsh but calc room is there to help. Assigns lots of semi mandatory (not really) practice problems that can take days. Tests are fast paces. 21A got a C+,21B got A
exams were painful
She isn't the best lecturer but who studies off of lectures anyways YouTube is key lol. Test are fast past but fairish(doesn't have those complicated trig question). Assigns like 60 questions a week for homework out of the textbook but only 5 are due for credit. Class is eh overall regular idk but I got a better grade than I did in 21A
If anyone is confused by her grades, they are in for a miserable semester. Because she doesn't deserve two points.
If you ever have the misfortune of taking professor Liu it is important to note that you dont get the full time allotted to you in midterms or finals. Make sure that you can do all of the problems in 40 min or less. Speed is what is most important on her tests. There are 10 HWs each quarter, graded on 2 problems/completion.
This class was actually atrocious. Professor Liu graded the tests so harshly even the TAs complained, average was 50% for every single test. Huge curve, but I did every problem she assigned and still got a C- without curve. Avoid if you can, but practice the material at every chance you get if you can't, it's still possible to do well enough
Waste of time going to lecture for me. She is frantic in class making many mistakes which makes it hard to follow. Her homework is ridiculously long, but she only grades the 5 hardest problems from the chapter. Tests are reasonable questions, but not enough time 40 minutes for each midterm. I recommend studying and knowing how to do simple problems
Prof. Liu is a horrible teacher, don't take her. She does not care about student success or wellbeing, very condescending, makes many mistakes in her lecture and has a very heavy accent that is difficult to understand. Avoid her at all costs.
Professor Liu is the absolute worst in the whole math department. She is overloads with homework that takes days to complete and is graded so even if you get the answer right, she won't give you points because its not how she wanted it despite never posting grading rubrics. I would rather be eaten alive by fire ants than take her class.
She is an AWFUL teacher. Here are some problems I had with the class: 1) Homework was unnecessarily hard and complicated, often using obscure trigonometric "tricks" or super "outside of the box" solutions. 2) Practice exams were provided, but showed OPPOSITE content of what was actually tested. 3) Average grade of the class was 50.00%
Professor Liu is a poor professor. Her lectures are boring and straight from the textbook--she does not digest the information or explain it in a sensible way. I learned everything I know from my TA and The Organic Chemistry Tutor on YT. She grades very strictly so even if you get a hw or test problem correct you can still lose a ton of points
She has a lot of strict rules on a lot of things like homework format, submission, and how to do a problem. With that being said, you could lose up to 50% of credit if you do a problem correctly but not in her way. No quizzes and only 2 midterms, and the amount of HW is okay.
Liu's class is fast-paced and straight forward. Pay attention to the examples in lecture and bolded hw problems -- if you're okay with those, you'll have no problem with the tests. She's a harsh grader, but it's clear what she is looking for. End of quarter grades are heavily curved. There's also way too much hw, so I only did the bolded ones...
Most homework I've ever done for a class hands down. However, it did help me get an A in the class because of all the problems that I had to do. The class was definitely harder than other classes but I also realized that I came out of that class knowing the material very well. She also curved everybody's grade because most people did bad.
She gives way too many homework problems that don't end up getting scored but will nitpick about extra pages and little things that don't matter. Her lectures are very fast and she often makes mistakes in them making it hard to learn. Her practice exams show the exact opposite of the material that is on the real test. She is the worst teacher ever.
IF U WISH TO PASS THIS COURSE AND GET A GREAT GRADE. JUST AVOIDING TO TAKE FULIU'S COURSE!!!!!!!!! THE WORST TEACHER I EVER HAD FACED!!!!
Fu is the worst professor in the math department. She is very strict on homework and is paranoid about cheating during exams. Tough grader. She is very unclear when she teaches and does not want to help her students. Do not take her for any reason! Wait until another professor teaches this class in the next few quarters.
Be ready to have some fun with Fu. Worst professor ever at Davis. She is very very strict and never wants to help her students. Fu is the worst.
Liu is an extremely strict grader but she knows the content well and provides more than enough resources to do well in the class. She isn't the best lecturer, but if you repeat the homeworks you'll do well because a lot of the exam questions come from the hw.
Fu is absolutely the worst teacher in the math department if not the whole school. She assigns copious amounts of homework that she doesn't even grade and her practice tests do not properly prepare you for the real thing. Her lectures almost seem like she wants to show off more than teach yet still makes too many mistakes to properly educate you.
Awful instructor with very poor communication skills. Her lecturers cover easy stuff, and reading out of the text book. She however assigns the hardest problems in the HW and grades crazy. It is almost like she wants you to fail this class. She did not allow us to look at the graded final exam, and set the class average to a C+. Avoid if you can.
Professor Liu is INCREDIBLY difficult, but if you put in the time and effort, you should be able to succeed in the class.I found that her homework was harder than the exams, so make sure you actually put effort into doing the homework!
This class was not as hard as people say, I actually thought Liu did a pretty great job at teaching it. Don't know why she gets so much hate, she kills it lowkey
Liu is a horrible teacher and person. She expects students to complete around 30 problems per assignment but only grades 5. When you go to her for help she will not give you the time of day or just say you need tutoring without elaborating. Her lectures are so disorganized and it just seems like she wants to prove how good she is. Avoid if possible
Liu is a horrible professor and a horrible person. She does not explain the content well and expects you to complete tons of problems that she never even looks at. If you go to her for help she will just ridicule you for not understanding and say "too bad go to tutoring" then turn her back to you and move on. Don't take her.
Took as "easy" Math elective. Turned out to be more work than my other 2 upper-div CS courses. HWs take 5-6 hours weekly, but the average grade on them is a 22/30. Super low, considering 10 points is completion. No lecture notes posted, no videos. Tests = fair, but difficult. Asked her about a potential regrade; she was snappy and highkey mean.
Very good professor, highly recommended
She is a pretty good lecturer and explains things better than the textbook, giving helpful tips and tricks beyond it in lecture and always stressing knowing how things work instead of memorization. The homework is sometimes a lot, but it isn't graded (except through discussion quizzes that mimic it), so you don't have to do it all if you get it.
Overall she explained the material very well and it was clear she cared about her students' understanding of the material. She would take questions at all times during lecture and was approachable outside of class. Grades were determined purely by tests but you should still 100% do the hw. Do the hw, go to the calc room and you'll be okay.
Her lectures were really helpful. She explains concepts clearly and gives plenty of examples to make sure you understand. Be sure to go to lectures!! Exam average was ~50 and above 78 is an A. Go through the textbook on your own and do some homework (not graded) and you will be fine.
Her lectures were not great at all, she only gave on example per topic and it was the easiest one ever. Your overall grade consists of 6 quizzes, the two midterms, and one final. Homework was not graded, but yet assigned and it would be over 15 problems per chapter(had to do them in order to understand/even pass the class). Writes on chalk board.
I took her class in winter quarter (and that was a particularly rough quarter for me), but I disliked the way she lectured. She writes quickly on the chalkboard and only briefly explains the examples she does in class, which are the easiest ones. Not to mention the HW (crazy amounts). There are MUCH easier professors to take classes with!
Lectures are hard to follow and grading criteria is unclear. Tough grader.
根本不会讲,卷子出的贼sb
To be honest, she isn't AS bad as people make out her to be, but she is a challenging professor. Definitely at least skim the book to fill in gaps as she does not cover everything in lecture, but those topics are still in the HW/quizzes/exams. Her grading is a little strict so write down as many steps if you can (including equations) on exams.
I am a freshman and i just took my first midterm in UCD. She graded me by every step, no matter if they r important or just some basic rules ( do u hgave to explain power rule every steps when u do derivative?) so, as a freshman, no one tells me that, and what u can expect from me? wut i can do is how i got 5 in ap bc. i just put important steps.
Restez loin d'elle! Attention à votre GPA!
Does not give good feedback. Unnecessarily tough grader. Lectures are more or less useless, in that tests are so much harder than examples given it feels like a different class, and it is not clear when she starts and ends a new topic it feels like you are just being talked at.
2 Midterms + the Final Exam account for over 90% of the grade. Homework isn't graded but you need to do it to learn the material. You will essentially have to teach yourself because during the lectures she only goes over very basic examples. She curves the final grade because otherwise the majority of students wouldn't pass. Take anyone else.
Professor Liu explains concepts well in lectures, though the homework load can be heavy. Using Unstuck ai along with the textbook helped me grasp the material. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
The professor is a nice person. However, be prepared for self-studying if you want a good grade on the exams. It's best not to make any mistakes, as the grading criteria are harsh.
Idk why she gets so much hate. She assigns a lot of HW but her lectures are lowkey useful for the quiz. Curve is great, tests are fair and just like any calc class. Open to answering questions in class. practice exams are actually similar to the real test, idk what u guys r saying. She ate.
Helpful during office hours and has a really nice curve. Some exam problems are VERY similar to the HW so as long as you do most of it, you'll be fine. You don't have to do all of it (I only did about half) because it's optional, but the more the better (make sure to check answers). She is a tough grader on exams so make sure to show lots of work!
Decent lecturer, make sure to do homework as exam problems are very similar to homework. SHOW YOUR WORK on tests! Write down things exactly as she does during lectures so you know what she's looking for. Curves 80% to an A because averages are kinda bad.
Get ready to self study. Did not learn a single thing from lecture, but just self study.
Examples in class may be the “easy” ones, but they are just the examples from the textbook and she goes through the steps so you understand how to solve them. She is helpful during office hours for this too. There is a lot of homework, but the types of problems she chooses will possibly be on exams, so make sure you can do them.
She can get aggressive during office hours if you ask her to repeat something. Overall doesn't explain the concepts well and goes trough lecture very fast. She doesn't encourage students to ask questions. She does the easiest examples in lecture and assigns A LOT of homework problems. But the curve was very generous.
I HATE Fu Liu. Her tests are hard. Lectures are fast, and she uses only very easy examples. Homework is the only way to pass, but its worth nothing AND you only get a simple answer key, so its hard to know what you did wrong. 2 Midterms were 48% and final was 45%. Passing grade was 34%. The only good things are the curve and the practice tests.
A magic professor!
聽不懂她的口音!幫我!
She was very bad a lecturing and didn't really teach, just gave theories and expected you to understand. Main study materials was HW which was assigned in insane amounts. I only passed because I watched Professor Leonard on YouTube. Would not recommend taking her unless you need to, and expect to do a ton of work outside of class.
Made an account on this awful website to counterbalance the negative reviews that come with being a college calc professor. Fu Liu has clear guidelines, and you will succeed if you put in the work to meet those guidelines. You can tell she wants to equip her students for more difficult classes. Taking Fu Liu will make you a better math student.
don't really know why there are so many steps to grade. Grading is so strict.
The class was difficult because it's based on difficult subjects, but Prof Liu explained everything well to make them as accessible as possible. I'm really not sure why she has such a low score.
Tests graded very harshly and require a lot of regrade requests (idk how they mess it up so bad). HW not for grade but absolutely necessary bc test is similar. Quizzes are also similar to tests so that helps. Very very test heavy class. Basically recites textbook in lecture so be ready to figure things out for yourself.
Office hours are sorta useless imo. Gives 40+ homework problems, only submit half, only 1-3 are even graded. Exams are tough but fair if you study the homework and practice exams, no surprises. Solid curve at the end of the quarter, at least an 84% was an A.
Professor Lui genuinely cares about her students if they put in the effort. Her office hours actually help and although her lectures do go off solely off the book, if you take the time to actually read the book you will understand. Office hours are helpful, TA's are helpful, test heavy with a big curve and heavy and tough graded homework
Prof. Liu is a really good lecturer who makes things more understandable. The homework load is a lot, but they are not graded. There are quizzes each discussion, which I personally did not like. I had a medical situation that made me miss a midterm, but Prof. Liu was very helpful and I was able to pass. Tests are hard, but the curve is fair.
No lecture recordings, no lecture notes uploaded, arbitrary grading, good luck.
Very disappointing, willnt take her class anymore
very tough grader, she will cross your midterm papers even the answers are right, slight difference between answer and the notes she gave will be treated as a wrong answer
Very very bad prof, never select her course. Tough exam and grading, no curve.
I understand the course is difficult and students are expected to put in significant effort. However, without effective instruction and a clear plan to support student learning, effort alone is not enough. The lectures are fast-paced, note-heavy, and lack engagement or checks for understanding, which provides minimal support for learning.
The concepts themselves are not conceptually impossible but the grading makes this course terrible. If you didn't write verbatim what she wanted, despite showing a clear understanding, it is a zero (btw grading criteria was NEVER provided). Other students in the class were slightly insufferable, so class engagement is only between a select few.
I don't mean to be mean, but listening to this professor's lectures always makes me focus all my attention on her strange accent. I can't understand the content of the lecture at all. If possible, I would try to switch to a different professor for this class.
