Andy's great if you aren't a hard rock player, etc... My interests vary and he was great for jazz songs and fundamentals (improving my sight reading, etc...) To me, he wasn't always clear, but he's a good guy

Maness is great. Going to his lab became really enjoyable even though it was just chords and reading! He's really funny and knows his theory inside out as you would imagine. My only critism is that he sometimes moved to quickly and did seem to see if we understood it or not. He's increadibly helpful outside class though. Definately recomended.
Good guy, good class.
At first I wasn't sure about him, but grew to love him. He pushes you hard and and is there if you need him outside of class. Do your HW and don't act intimidated you will get what you need out of the class and even more. Hes tough and has an attitude sometimes but if you can handle it, do it. Get used to being called by your last name too...
Maness is a real American. He comes off a little like a Military Troop leader but without the hardass attitude. He is a great teacher and very patient with his students. He is interested in making music and he goes out of his way to help those who need it. He will make you work hard but you will get a lot from his class.
At first I wasn't sure about the class, but it ended up being good. He has good advice for those who actually want to make money off their music. Pay attention when he talks about the "cosmic heavies". They are very useful.
He makes the 40k a year more amicable. :)
I took the guitar for non-guitarist and he is WAY too hard for that. I hate the guitar now. All bar chords. It's so hard. I wish I had dropped it. It is NOT WORTH the work required for a half credit!!!
Re(12/9/08 ILGT115):Evaluation was submitted on the day that student took his/her final exam for the class; as EVERYONE in the class passed the final, that includes the person that submitted this evaluation, although I'm sure s/he didn't think that they did; exam requirements are clearly spelled out in the syllabus. Did s/he think I was joking?
I take private lessons with Mr.Maness and plan to continue too for the next 3 years (even as a songwriting major). If you want to learn how to be a better guitarist and overall musician as well as learn valuable life lessons both in and outside of music, I highly recommend him. He isnt an "easy A" but if you do the sh!t, you'll do just fine.
Maness is one of the best instructors I've had at Berklee, hands down. I've been in some form of class with him since my first semester. Great in labs and private instruction but not just for guitar. Think of his classes like a fountain of information about all things music (business, harmony, performance, etc.) He goes above and beyond; worth 40k
Maness is fantastic. I was in his guitar class for music educators. Despite the fact that I'm an accomplished guitar player already and its mainly pedagogy class, he was eager to help me improve further and even more eager for advice on improving his already sterling teaching skills. He's a great guy full of good stories. I highly recommend him.
Maness is great. I got a lot out of the lab I took with him as well as my private lessons. He gives solid practical instruction both for the guitar and for the all around musician. Definitely recommended.
Maness is a true guitar hero, coming from the school of William Leavitt(He was a student of Leavitt at Berklee). I have taken many semesters of private instruction and I recommend him to any guitar student. He knows EVERYTHING related to the guitar and his stories can't be beat. Entrepreneur, teacher, and a living music encyclopedia,Maness thanks
awesome guy. im a drum student but i also play guitar. I took a guitar for non-principal lab with him. i came in knowing some stuff and came out feeling pretty solid. i would totally take this lab if you feel like you know how to play the guitar but don't have a full grasp on where everything is. He's not an ego guy and loves to teach.
Mr Maness is AWESOME! he's super funny and sarcastic and REALLY knows his stuff. he's a great teacher so long as you practice and keep up. to get a better grasp of guitar chords/reading/harmony/cosmic heavies (take the class to find out what that is) take MANESS
Great teacher. My favorite class.
Maness is the MAN! He was so awesome a down to earth guy and if you are prepared hes such a cool dude. I woll definately take him again!
I had Maness for my 5th and 6th semesters of private lessons. He's a great guy that is very understanding, and is knowledgeable about a variety of styles. He gets you prepared for proficiency like no other.
Favorite teacher I've ever had in my life. The knowledge I've gained is both useful in school and in my every day life. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Maness is an amazing teacher! He is knowledgeable about guitar and makes classes fun with his witty sense of humor. He makes himself available for extra help on your time and goes above and beyond to make sure you get all the help you need to prepare for the final. I really enjoyed his class and would highly recommend him as a professor
Mr. Maness is an outstanding teacher, and a pleasure to be around. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and understands how to cater to different learning styles very well. He is a Berklee gem, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for not only an excellent teacher, but also a mentor who genuinely cares about his students.
pretty laid back guy, but expects you to get stuff done. doesnt care if you are just trying to get proficiency requirements as long as you are honest with him in the beginning. playing wise he knows what he is doing. if you really want to learn the fretboard then take him. he helped me expand my fretboard knowledge and some cool chordal stuff.
This dudes the man! He's one of the best teachers I've had for a lab in while. He's always there for the students who need help, and even those who don't. I took Andrew for Guitar for the Non-guitarist and it was definitely worth the time. He knows what he's talking about it is really good at helping you understand. Definitely take!
Maness is the only guitar teacher iv had thus far at Berklee that i can stand, and more than that, hes excellent! I am not a performance major, and i've been on a search for a teacher that understands my specific wants in being a musician. Maness completely understands what i want to do, and he incorporates that into how he teaches.
Maness is the man! He's funny and helpful! Get him as a teacher! NOW!
Maness is the man!! A wealth of knowledge, easy-going, a Berklee veteran from the Leavitt days, and a pleasure to learn from!
Awesome teacher. He tries his best to make everything relevant to you and your interests while teaching you very fundamental and useful techniques to increase your knowledge of the fretboard.
I'm not even a guitar principal, but I would still say that Maness is one of the best teachers at Berklee. He's the only one I've had who teaches you in a way like he's expecting you to succeed. He never dumbed down the material, and I learned tons from him. That being said, he is also HILARIOUS. Class is never boring!
I had Maness for my private guitar lesson for my first year and he was hands down the best teacher that I've ever had. He was informative, personable, and really knows his stuff. Great teacher.
He is the ONE GUY I needed to inspire me. I'm gad I found him.
He is very professional and he clearly knows his stuffs. I really appreciate his helpfulness and patience even though I was not a guitar principal. His class was enjoyable and never boring.
Maness is the man! He's really helpful and made my semester a lot more bearable. Being an MP&E student, guitar isn't my first priority, but he taught me tons of ways to voice chords for songs and how to perform better ! Highly recommended!
Very inspirational, helpful, and personable. You will learn and grow a great deal if you apply yourself during his lessons.
If you want basics, or just want to pass the proficiencies as a non-performance major, he's the man. Just tell him if you're going to be absent, and everything else will be smooth sailing. Highly recommend.
He taught me everything i know about guitar. And i first knew NOTHING... So I have to say he was worth every penny spent! He is comical and I enjoyed every class. I recommend him to all beginners!
Awesome teacher! Still one of my Berklee favorites after two years.
Andrew is a great guitarist and a terrific teacher. He is incredibly clear, so if you make sure that you are really listening to what he says, you will learn all there is to learn in the world of guitar. He is incredibly fair, and if anything, expects too little of students--it's very easy to meet his expectations and he is extremely understanding.
Hands down one of the top Berklee teachers. All of the lessons were very clear cut, and he never gave us more than we could handle. He was very good at making up missed classes too. Great guy.
George is the best!!! so kind and so knowledgable. Love him :-) learnt A LOT in his gtr techiques for non Gtr principles class even though I can already play well ... He caters for everyone and really loves helping his students. Kind, caring, AWESOME!
He is a great teacher and he wants the best for his students. I learnt how to be a better teacher through him. He is great!
Maness is a great instructor. He's great at explaining concepts and is patient when you don't understand something. He's got great stories and will prepare you well for the proficiency. Take notes and ask questions and you'll be set!
Dude ROCKS!!!HE KNOWS HIS STUFF... IS SUPER PATIENT... AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING IN A CLASS WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE ADVANCED THAN YOU AND NOT FEELING LEFT OUT OR LAG BEHIND??? YEP!!!
Excellent and organized teacher!
Andrew is a phenomenal instructor--some may be put off that he doesn't necessarily speak in young people's vernacular or have what at first seems like a chill disposition, but he's actually incredibly intuitive and reasonable and is, above all, an incredible communicator and teacher. If you listen, you will learn. that simple. Take his classes!
Professor Maness is a wonderful guy with a lot of wisdom to offer. He's very clear, and he moves at a pace that everyone can feel comfortable with. The class is laid back, and he likes to joke around. I really enjoyed it and I felt very comfortable by the final. You also actually get better at guitar, which is really what matters most. Great guy
He REALLY knows his stuff. Teaches the curriculum very well and based upon what your goals are at Berklee. RECORD your lessons. I found it helpful being that his vocabulary musically hurts the brain sometimes but IN A GREAT WAY. Very cheerful, professional and encouraging. GREAT GUY!
I love this guy. He understands that my priority is not guitar performance but producing music. So he goes really easy and casual in every lesson. I don't mean that he is not helpful, he is very helpful and he is a great player. Recommend him for Tech majors who are not interested in hardcore performing!
He pushed me to transcribe pieces and solos to get my head totally immersed within notes. I 'm glad I took him this semester for my lesson very helpful and polite with a few jokes to listen to.
Gave tons of constructive feedback and helped me grow as a guitarist and musician. Helped me develop lots of practical skills over the course of the semester. Definitely recommended.
He is an awesome teacher if you go to the class and pay attention you will definitely learn more on guitar!
I had Andy for my first semester private instructor, and I couldn't have made a better choice. He certainly pushed me to be better, but never in an impatient way. He have me the exact material I needed to get better this semester, and going into my proficiency exam I feel completely at ease. Cannot recommend highly enough, 1010
Andrew is a very knowledgeable and helpful guy. I took his class as someone who already plays guitar, but I did not understand what I was doing. Andrew cleared that right up. If at any point you aren't sure about what you're doing or how to play a certain chord or scale, Andrew is right there for you with multiple answers, reasons why and history.
He really is an awesome guy. I've had so many friends take the equivalent to this class and say that they didn't learn anything. I had the exact opposite experience. He gave us weekly things to play that just helped us improve every single week. I never felt like I needed to cram and felt really prepared for the final too. Take this class!
Maness is an excellent professor to take for private instruction. He explained everything thoroughly, and he was patient with my questions. He also gave a lot of praise when you showed up to the lesson well-prepared, and he pushed you without assigning an excess amount of things to practice. Take him for sure!
Learned a lot coming from absolutely no guitar experience.
Andrew is an excellent teacher. He's a great motivator and communicates his ideas in a very clear manner. He cracked me up in my proficiency and took away a lot of the pressure I had going in. Would definitely recommend.
Love his class, gain so much knowledge from him! YOU WONT REGRET!
A fine gentleman and an astoundingly great teacher. Delivers concepts and technical aspects of the guitar in a clear and concise manner. A great motivator and his professional mannerisms are a testament to his character and personality. A great role model, and always has his doors open for you. Take a private lesson with him. No regrets i assure u.
Maness has been one of my absolute favorite teachers at Berklee so far. He really strives (and achieves) at giving you the bang for your buck. He's willing to answer any questions and review any material that might not have clicked in the first lesson. I HIGHLY recommend taking with him no matter what level of guitar you play. Great guy!
This class helps any guitarist at any level to establish a classroom feel. It was a good source to grab ideas for when music educators get in the field and need to teach the materials. All sources can be used from the class to make a successful program and Professor Maness really helped established that.
If you're planning on taking any guitar classes, take it with Mr. Maness! I really enjoyed all of the work assigned and always felt like I was learning something. He always has a positive attitude and helps students reach their individual goals. He may be more challenging then other teachers, but if you put in your best effort you will gain a lot.
What can I say? GREAT and BEST teacher ever. He makes everything clear and simple, also useful. Just take him!
Andrew was one of the coolest and most insightful instructors I've had. he really helps with what ever you're interested in and makes sure you're ready for the tests.
If you want to start to learn guitar in well organized way and in a short time, this is perfect class. This class has every week homework, and it is not heavy at all if you practice steadily. He teaches logically, and efficiently. And he checks homework individually and he knows when you need help. Be diligent, then you will learn a lot.
Andrew was one of the best guitar teachers i have had. He made me feel comfortable enough to ask questions and mess up, but also expected a certain level of understanding that pushed me to practice often. I truly learned so much in the short semester I had him. If you really put the work in and actually want to learn, Andrew is your guy.
Andrew is awesome!! At first his class seems overwhelming, but as long as you practice regularly, you'll get a good grade and learn a lot too!!
This course was challenging, but I learned a lot from Professor Maness. He never let students fall behind in class and always checking up with individual students. He's very unique, funny and smart to teach guitar techniques to non-principal instrument students. I think I learned more than what the title of the course says. Take him to learn more!!
Teaching is what he does. He's done it for like 30 years. There's no arrogance here and he wants to help you learn to learn. He explains everything you need to know for proficiency well. If you kind of know the stuff required, this is the time know it without thinking, practice hard, sight-read, etc. He's amiable and he's got a lot of stories.
I started taking guitar lessons when I was 11, but never really knew what was under my fingers. This class gave me tools & forced me to practice; which was something I desperately needed. He explains everything very well, I found it easy but beneficial. I really enjoyed this class, as long as you practice you'll be fine!
George is an amazing teacher!! I couldn't do a single bar chord before this lab, and walked out now being able to play all different kinds. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! This is not the kind of course where you can get away with looking over the material the night before. It is a very rewarding lab, and you'll thank yourself for taking it!!
This teacher is one of the best teachers I have ever had at Berklee. Entirely grateful to have encountered his rather jovial self. He teaches well, very knowledgeable and with good spirited. I wish he taught all Berklee classes. Simply the best. I would encourage you take him.
Great guy, always has quirky jokes. He makes sure we understand all the material and makes class fun. Easy to approach!!!
Professor Maness is a straightforward teacher; he's very understanding and thorough. He makes it clear that he's here to help give us an education and he understands if we miss class; it's our business! His grading criteria is CLEAR though. Learn the chord forms and scales and you will pass. PRACTICE EVERY WEEK. That's all he asks for. Recommend!
He is an excellent educator. He has been teaching for a while and you can tell, because his teaching method is so clear. He really cares about his students and is very helpful if you need extra help. Practice every week and you'll learn a lot!!
I learned a lot about guitar in his class and it was interesting and engaging
Prof. Maness takes his job seriously and cares about his students. He was generous with his time, meeting with me before/after class when I had any questions. He is very clear. Take his class if you want to know what you're actually playing, or if you just want to learn some cool chords to impress your significant other. Take his class!
Professor Manes is by far one of the best guitar teachers I had. He really cares that you understand the theory behind playing and not just technical shapes. This class was great, and perfect for my level. I Feel MUCH more confident playing the guitar these days. I finally know what i'm doing.
Andrew is really collected guy, he's caring and is willing to work with anyone at any level. Would recommend to anyone.
Amazing professor! His lectures are always very clear and organized, and he's willing to help you if you're confused with any of the topics. If you miss a class, he'll let you attend his other classes to make it up. You have to keep up with the homework if you want to do well in Maness' class, but it's definitely worth it. Best guitar teacher.
I learned a lot, he makes you work for what you want to achieve. Not the usual non-principal guitar lab teacher, he actually cares to teach a non-guitarist! Amazing and not hard at all!
I learned an immense amount of information in this guitar lab. His lesson plans were very clear and he was always willing to take the time to explain when a student did not grasp a concept. I would 100% take the class again.
He is such a great teacher! If you follow along with the lesson and practice you will do fine! He makes class very fun!
I had Maness for Guitar Skills for the Non Guitarist and he was so funny and engaging. He truly loves his profession and you can tell when taking his class. He genuinely wants you to get the most out of the class. Be sure to practice! I learned so much on the guitar and that I didn't know prior to the class.
Highly recommend Maness! He's extremely patient and cares a lot for his students. If you decide to take his guitar lab- make sure you practice every day! I had barely any experience on guitar and didn't feel too overwhelmed. I wish I had been more consistent in my practice. Maness was so helpful and I really learned a TON. Take Maness !!
One of the best professors I've had at Berklee :))) he clearly cares a lot about his students and is willing to go at each students pace, offering extra time during office hours and extra resources for students who might be struggling (aka me).
He puts in HIS own hours to help you succeed in your material. Not to mention how deeply caring he is about your well being. He truly treats you like your best customer! Loved having him and visiting his office hours
Attendance is not mandatory, but he will pour his heart out to make sure you understand the materials. You just need to show it. Really humble and respected teacher.
Andrew is an excellent teacher. He makes everyone feel welcome in the class and makes sure everyone understands the material well. The assignments that are given are simple, if you put in the time and practice.
Andrew is a great guy who shows a ton of care and passion for his students! Hes always brimming with ideas and creativity.
One of my favorite teachers ever, helped me a lot on guitar and will more than prepare you for the proficiency and professional guitar playing in general if you take it seriously.
This class was challenging. You'll want to practice what you learn in class for sure!
This class was one of the best classes I took at Berklee! I learned so much about guitar in a few weeks. He is so patient with the students and takes the time to get to know you and answer any questions. recommend for sure.
Andrew is amazing. If you are a guitar player, totally take him for PI. He is a professional, you will learn a lot. Most importantly, you will learn both what you NEED and what you WANT. He is hilarious, kind and very caring. Totally one of my favorite teachers at Berklee!
I am a dance major at The Boston Conservatory with very limited music theory knowledge, but Andrew helped me a lot and continued to encourage me throughout the semester. I learned a lot from him and enjoyed taking the class very much!
Andrew is such a sweet guy and this class (guitar for non guitarists) is exactly what it sounds like. Learn more than I did in my first 15 weeks of private lessons when I was 16. It was great. He has this class down to a science.
Awesome teacher, awesome class! Boosted my guitar skills a lot!
All around great prof. Learned foundational skills about guitar playing that really help in a practical sense. I was already pretty familiar with playing the guitar, but I'm very glad I took this course because I feel that much more comfortable moving around the neck, and reaching for certain chord voicings that I did not know beforehand.
A solid choice for learning guitar. I didn't know a lick of guitar until this class, and I learned so much! Definitely take him. Be ready to practice though!
I used to be terrified of Guitar Proficiency tests and I was really unhappy with how I had done the last 3 times I took them. It was not just a matter of me not practicing enough but I was a nervous test taker. Andrew really opened up the proficiency material in new ways and made practicing a more rewarding and confidence developing exercise.
Professor Maness did an excellent job teaching the Guitar Lab for non guitar principals. The course does move very fast, but that is just the nature of the material. He will work with you every step of the way to make sure you understand, and he doesn't mind if you ask a lot of questions which is great, because I do!
One of the best guitar professors in Berklee. Extremely patient, understanding, and teaches in a way that helps you to look at guitar from a new perspective. You will definitely leave this class knowing 10 times more about guitar than you ever did before.
He is one of the most caring teachers I've ever had in Berklee. He makes sure your tuition was paid for something useful to learn. If you're not a guitar principle, and interested in guitar, maybe just want to be able to play some progressions for you harmony projects, this is the class to take! And be sure to take it from Mr. Maness!
He is a very good professor, will teach you a lot of skills.
Mr. Maness is such a genuine person and is attentive towards the needs of each student. He's accessible and really knows what he's talking about. I wasn't expecting to learn as much as I did. The only grade is the final, and attendance is optional. You'll need to practice especially if you've never picked up a guitar before, but he'll prepare you.
Prof. Maness was very kind, enthusiastic and slow paced for those who were struggling. I enjoyed his lecture, it was very fun. You need to have a guitar (any kind is fine) for this class. If you practice, you will get an A. He is very flexible with attendance (if you are sick for your class, you can go to other section time). Highly recommended!
Learned so much in the class you need to work your hands taking this class but its so worth it - Andrew is the best , hilarious and kind and such an amazing teacher - yes Id take him again and again
Took him for a guitar lab, only knew basic chords when I started (no barre). Definitely a challenging class, you have to stay on top of it every week, but if you do it's very rewarding. Maness is a good guy, and always willing to help. He definitely wants you to succeed. But you gotta put in some work.
Andrew is a really great guy who truly cares about your success. We worked on a good mix of scales and chords and he makes it clear from day 1 what will be on the final exam. If you make just a little time to practice every week youll be set for anything he asks you to do and you will really see an improvement in your guitar skills.
Andrew Maness is a fantastic professor. He has great availability for students who need extra help, and really wants to see his students succeed. The course itself is a great overview of the basics of guitar, and understanding the theory of the instrument. This gives a great foundation for further learning of the instrument. Highly recommend.
Absolutely great professor. Teaches you things you would not learn if you tried learning guitar on your own. Be ready to practice though, if you're not willing to practice then don't bother taking this class.
Professor Maness was an incredible teacher. I took his guitar lab for non-guitar principles thinking, I've been playing guitar for over eight years now, I might learn something. But as he says, he makes his class worth the money and I can gladly say, I learned so much from his teaching. He makes you work, but it's worth every second of it!!!!
this is a really good teacher who will make your money worthy.
Andrew rocks, came into the class hardly knowing anything about guitar, now that its over I can totally play 1000x better!! He really helps you learn guitar, and is INCREDIBLY smart in Harmony, and applies it to the instrument and everything you learn. Wish I could take him again!
He is a brilliant human. I have a much deeper understanding of the guitar. He really wants you to do well and learn something. He also gives you so many opportunities to succeed and makes the environment very relaxed. Just put some effort in and you will get something out of it.
Andrew does a fantastic job explaining both the expectations for the course, and the source material that William Leavitt created for the school. I am twice the guitarist I was before, just by being in his course for a mere 14 weeks, and that's saying something because I received my first guitar at 2 years old!
Maness is a hard teacher, but he is incredibly specific about what he will ask you on the final and leaves nothing to the imagination. He gave each student his individual attention and was accessible outside of class. He was also funny and gave really informative lectures about the guitar.
GAM was a really great teacher. However, I would recommend maybe not taking this class if you have not played guitar before like me. I had to work and practice a lot to understand basic things he was talking about especially because he talks very fast it's easy to be confused if you're not already familiar with guitar. You won't learn open chords.
Well, let me be very honest. Most of the students are giving him a good rate because he personally asks for it. He is totally apathetic, dominant, and has a passive-aggressive personality. He speaks very fast and doesn't explain well. Don't choose him if you have never played guitar in your life. He simply cannot motivate or inspire.
Great class if you are willing to work and practice.
Andrew was such a great teacher! his way of teaching is very clear and methodical and the course is well- organized. Do the work every week and you'll see an improvement!
Probably one of the best professors I've had at Berklee. The guitar for non-principals course challenged me in a way I didn't expect, and I'm a much better guitarist now because of it. He's extremely patient but still makes you work for it. You have to be willing to practice. If you do, you'll get a lot out of this. I got my money's worth.
ILGT115 was informative and engaging as a subject, and Prof. Maness made the material so accessible and clear. He will crack jokes in class and recommend lots of great music. Definitely practice to make the most of his class, because it will pay off.
I am so much better at guitar after taking this class! At first things seem really basic if you've been playing for a bit like me, but Prof. Maness builds your knowledge up almost without you noticing until you realize-- what the heck, I actually know like every chord and note on the guitar neck!! Do the work and practice and IT PAYS OFF!
Maness is a really cool knowledgable teachers whose priority is his students. He prefaces his class with the intention of making sure you get your moneys worth in learning the guitar. like any instrument what you put into it is indicative of your craft however Maness still sets you up for success using little hacks.
Took his Guitar for Non-Guitarists Lab and had an absolute blast. He genuinely cares about the students and wants everyone in the class to learn and improve. He explains the material really well.
Andrew is amazing; he is both a valuable storehouse of guitar knowledge and great at communicating that knowledge in a way that makes it easy to understand. He truly wants you to succeed, and he is able to condense the most valuable and helpful material into straightforward lessons and exercises. On top of that, he's pretty damn funny.
Maness is a great professor. Really wants his students to succeed and is kind and encouraging when you need extra help or explanation.
G. Andrew Maness was a great teacher. His class was always a lot of fun. He does put students on the spot, but not with anything unexpected. If you pay attention and practice every now and then you will do fine.
Really great at making sure everyones understanding of the material. Great class for learning the basics of guitar!
Professor Maness is great. I'd been playing a long time, but without knowledge of guitar theory. He finally made me understand what theory is all about. Take his class. He's very likable and knows what he's talking about.
I learned a lot from his class, he's a caring teacher and he's very good at breaking down harder concepts into more easily understandable ideas.
Incredible professor. Always wants to make sure that you get your money's worth in class, and is always willing to meet with you even outside of office hours. A real gem of Berklee. He really knows his stuff, and the class is completely manageable. Super caring. I can't say enough good things about him.
Andrew was one of the best professors I have had during my time at Berklee. He understands that the material for this course may be difficult for a beginner guitarist & gives you plenty of time to practice new concepts before introducing another, as long as you practice you will do great in his class! He is so kind hearted & encouraging, TAKE HIM!!
Andrew is a wonderful guitar teacher. He explains things very clearly and is very straightforward with his teaching. As long as you practice, you will really enjoy taking his class! He's also really funny which makes the class more enjoyable
He makes you work for your grade it's worth it. You will learn.
He is such an awesome professor. I am not a guitarist but I took this class for learning guitar, and I did learn lots of things. He is super cool and funny, and the class is full of learning. As long as you are attatched to this class and just practice, you will enjoy it.
Professor Maness is a teacher who is fully prepared for every lecture. His ability to clearly deliver course material and include interesting knowledge towards each lesson is extraordinary. As a previous non-guitarist, I have accumulated so much flexibility and skills to play things that I once could not even comprehend. Thank You Prof Maness!
Great teacher, he's incredibly insightful and breaks up the course's content very well. This class is somewhat challenging if you've never played guitar before, but if you put the work in, you should do well.
I have no words. Literally one of the best professors I've had at Berklee. I'm a vocalist and he really taught me how to form Major 7, -7, -7b5, Dom7, Dom9, and so many more. We learned how to do this in different forms. I definitely got my money's worth. Very positive class too. Also very nice professor, so glad I took this class!
He's old school, but his methods WORK! I had some guitar knowledge coming into the class, but Professor Maness helped me understand my fretboard inside and out - which was invaluable. Extremely kind, caring, and wants you to succeed. I really enjoyed his class and would definitely take another class with him/recommend him to other students.
Probably one of the best Professor Ive had at Berklee. He really teaches you how to know your way around the fret board. I genuinely learned so much in this class. It was such a positive environment and Prof Maness is very kind and hilarious. 10/10.
George was awesome. Amazing professor, great man to learn from. Cares about his students and appreciates everyone for where they on guitar. I needed one more ensemble credit to graduate and I found out I could exchange that for a lab credit. I decided to take intro to Guitar and gained so much. thank you George. You learn scales and chords in 115.
He is the best professor that I've met in Berklee. He is very kind, pleasant, wants to help his students and teaches very well. This class was not a waste of tuition AT ALL. He taught us scale and code in a very logical way. Like all classes, individual practice is necessary, but it's worth it. Trust me and JUST TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Andrew is awesome! He's kind, funny, always knows what he's talking about, and genuinely cares about you passing his class, and of course he does. Your money to this school has gotta be worth something, right? If you have ever wanted to learn the guitar, or just get better at it, and you have the option to take him, DO IT! You won't regret it.
Very supportive, will work with you one-on-one, explains theory very well, gives students a complete understanding of guitar basics, encourages everyone to do their best, plenty of extra credit opportunities, prepares you well for final exam.
He was such a great teacher for a beginner guitar class. Laid everything out really clearly and had a defined schedule and plan of how to take absolutely anyone from knowing nothing about guitar to being pretty dang good. As long as you do the bit of work he recommends each week you will learn a lot and get an easy A.
Good professor. Explain everything clearly. His class is fun and you will learn a lot.
Professor Maness is outstanding, truly. I took guitar for the music educator, and I built a really good foundation because of him. I'm taking him again next semester for Guitar Skills for the Non-Principal because I've developed a passion for learning guitar! He pushes you just the right amount, is one of the most hilarious teachers, and he cares!
I took professor Maness this semester and it was amazing! I entered the class knowing ZERO about guitar playing and I finish the semester being able how to play many different songs! I'm really happy with the outcome! Just make sure to stay on top of things, and also that you want to learn guitar enough to study, and you'll be fine.
Goodness... I cannot sing G.A.M.'s praises enough. I'm a drum set principal that took up guitar three years ago. I knew next to nothing prior to his class, and now feel so much more confident navigating the fretboard, chords, and scales. He is a goldmine of information. Be a good listener...and PRACTICE! I can't thank you enough Maness Davidson
I honestly enjoyed Andrew's lab so much. I'm a vocalist, I stepped into his class without any knowledge of guitar, and when I stepped out I've became a half guitar principle. Take him, amazing guy.
He is awesome! I made a big progress on guitar because of him.
Absolutely take this class with Professor Maness. He is a GEM, he is willing to work with you and the class is such a supportive fun environment. I went from knowing nothing about the guitar to being pretty well-versed.
Professor Maness is a really lovely person and his approach to guitar teaching is efficient and no bull. His classes are super enjoyable and informative. If you want to understand the guitar better and super fast, Maness is the way to go.
Maness is a great guitar teacher. He is very intense in class, but he gets everyone to understand and master every topic and cares about you learning the material.
Andrew made me fall in love with the guitar! I'm so glad I took this class with him, learned so much! And now I'm able to apply this knowledge to my songwriting. He's without a doubt one of Berklee's biggest assets!
Lots of practice required for this class but as someone who never really played guitar before I learned A LOT. Would definitely recommend if you want to pick up the guitar
Professor Maness was excellent. I learned a ton. He lays all the information out very clearly and makes it organized so that it just comes down to how much you practice. I would recommend him every time.
He is so nice, and I truly learned a lot about the basic techniques of guitar from his class.
Andrew Maness is such a good professor, and as long as you practice you'll generally learn a lot about the guitar and chord theory.
I highly recommend taking his class, you will really learn a lot from his class. As long as you complete your homework every week as he requires, you will pass!
Professor Maness is funny in class & low-key nice. He's good at vividly describing scales and chord playing on guitar.
Great professor in guitar department! If you take guitar for non-principal, just choose him!
Can often be misunderstood for his
Puts on a big tough guy act but is really a softie on the inside. He cares for your knowledge at the end of the course and is fantastic at guiding you there. Love this guy
one of the greatest class I took a Berklee, made me understand the guitar better, especially the fretboard, and he is also a good source for understanding harmony on guitar
Andrew is a great teacher. If you're a beginner on guitar you will need to put in work to practice outside of class for the final, but Andrew is super clear and helpful if you bring him any questions. He also gives the option to show up to any class he holds throughout the week if you can't make it to your designated class period. I 100% recommend.
He i funny and good man
Prof Maness is so chill, the final is so easy, and he gives so many chances for extra credit. I actually learn stuff in this class too
loved this class! just show up and you get 10% extra, he even lets you go to other sections if you can't make a class. genuinely cares about making sure everyone succeeds and gets their money's worth. class is definitely more theoretical than practical but i still learned so much: more fretboard visualization than learning how to play songs.
Professor Maness is an incredible teacher and mentor. I loved being able to learn guitar from him, let alone just getting to experience his wisdom and energy. Every class was so energetic, interesting, and hilarious. He is the best.
Professor Maness is wonderful!! Take him if you actually want to get better at guitar. You will learn so much. Also, he'll call you by your last name which is kinda rad.
Engaging teacher. He wants you to do well. Occasionally, he gets a bit loud, but it's always connected to giving positive feedback.
Professor Maness is one of the most valuable professors in the entire college. He truly cares about his students and what they are getting out of his lectures which are not difficult to understand due to the pacing of content from week to week. Seriously recommend if you want to improve understanding and technique.
What a kooky professor. Great guy and really kind and prioritizes our ability to learn over anything else (lets us come to 1 of his 17 classes if we miss our original class time). However, don't expect to take this class for fingerpicking, he is solely teaching how to play guitar using picks. He does not like folk lol.
Andrew Maness is an amazing professor who cares so much that you get your money's worth. And you will get your money's worth. TAKE HIM.
At the end of the day, Andrew really does want you to excel in his courses and so if you just really try and consistently practice you'll do fine.
Great professor! So caring and lets you come to any of all his classes during the week (if you miss a class or another time works better with your schedule that's awesome). Grade is from attendance and Final exam. Take him, you'll learn a lot!!
Andrew was a wonderful professor who consistently motivated me to prepare for his class. If you're someone who doesn't do well under pressure, this class might not be the best fit for you, but if you're someone who actually wants to learn basic guitar principles and get out of your comfort zone, TAKE THIS CLASS!
Bro is so nice, kinda scary sometimes but nothing to be afraid of, he's just very passionate. He gives a lot of information during the class and goes through everything at least 5 times. Honestly, one of my favorite classes this semester. Even if I didn't practice as much, I could still show up and learn something.
quite an easy class, if you actually practice at least every week (i didn't, still got an A somehow). he's very funny and his way of teaching is very accessible and understandable
He is a great guitar professor. He is kind, fun, and gives good lectures. It is completely worth it. Before taking this class, I didn't even know how to play scales on the guitar. Now I can play all songs with guitar.
He may be intimidating at first but he is so nice and just wants you to excel in his class. He provides great feedback and listened when I was having any trouble. The practice assignments are very reasonable. I could barely play open string chords before this class, now I can play any scale and chord. Maness will absolutely teach you guitar.
He's really great if you're ready to learn guitar! Might seem a little scary at first, but he's just the nicest guy ever. He teaches something new every week without making it too heavy and helps you review previous materials, and he leads you into the chords instead of just telling you to memorize them. Definitely recommend!
Professor Maness is a passionate instructor who makes the material very accessible. While the class can be challenging, his teaching style and the use of resources like Unstuck AI make it rewarding. Attend class, practice regularly, and you'll learn a lot.
Great, an easy course but still can learn things. A nice and kind professor. Only one final exam in the semester.
I really enjoyed this class and I definitely have a stronger foundation in the instrument. He says this in the first class, but this course is not for those trying to self-accompany themselves. You won't learn strumming/finger-picking patterns, but you will learn scales and chords. I personally enjoyed it.
Take him, such a nice guy.
I learnt so much from this elementary guitar class. Anyone interested in the instrument should take this class. Strongly recommended!
Andrew's a really nice guy, and he always goes out of his way to make sure all questions are answered and everyone understands what they're learning. Really funny guy too. Great professor overall.
I loved the class! Having very basic knowledge of how to play the guitar, I learned a lot from Prof. Maness and improved my skills drastically. He was clear about what to work on from the textbook and supplement and was very supportive during class. He made it easy to do well on the final exam (the only test) with many extra credit opportunities!
Professional and dedicated professor. You will get a good grade if you do everything he tells you to do.
I love this class! Professor Maness explained the basic knowledge very clearly and was easy to understand. He also does the review in class and helps everyone to do it right. This is a really nice class for guitar beginners, and I learned a lot from it. Take him!

If you want to improve your guitar skills, definitely take Prof. Maness. He can seem a bit intimidating at times, but it's in a way that makes you want to improve. He cares about students and that they understand the material. The homework is practicing the textbook, and the entire course grade is based on the final, so be sure to practice.
I love how Mr Maness has fun with class it's always chill and fun. He also taught us guitar in an obvious way, explaining why we do it instead of remembering the "shape" I think he has a good prediction of the student's ability to learn, never too much but not too little, everything is just right at a moderate level and also necessary to learn
Maness made fun of me for cutting my finger open. I explained that I slit my knuckle a few days before and so it'd be hard to do bar chords that day. He laughed at me and said "Classic. An oldie but a goodie. You know how many students I have come in here every week with bandaids on their fingers?"
This professor is nice and always was really kind and caring. Sometimes he seems intimidating, but he is a good professor that wants his students to learn.
He's one of the best professors I've had at Berklee. Coming into the glass I only knew open chords and he totally changed how I look at the guitar. He has a very wise vibe to him. This guy knows what's up. As long as you're practicing like 10-30 mins a day, you'll be fine. He's great!
For somebody that teaches the same class almost twenty times a week, professor Maness is remarkable at connecting with students. Between giving me artist recommendations and allowing me to re-attend a week's lecture that I wasn't fully understanding, he was very helpful. Practice 1/2-1 hour a day (+ record the midterm lecture) and you'll succeed.
AWESOME guy, and an even better teacher. If you really want to learn your way around the guitar fast, this is the way to do it. I will say, if you're a beginner in terms of recognizing notes on the fretboard, this class will teach it to you, and it will most likely be difficult. If you're an absolute beginner, it will be VERY difficult. Kind grader
Prof. Andrew is very clear about what he expects of his students. If you show up, practice, and treat his with respect, then this class will be a positive experience.
Most people who don't like him just don't like the class and the fact that they have to actually learn guitar. I do think that this class was a little fast paced and there should be 2 levels of this class but that is more on the department. I came in with very little guitar knowledge and left with a 100, it is possible if you put in the work.
1st half of the semester was learning scales and the fretboard which was easy. 2nd half was learning chords which was harder bc of the theory associated so I recommend recording class to listen to later. He explains stuff well, uses time well, and is funny. I recommend him if you're serious about learning guitar and are willing to practice often.
Prof Maness was friendly & funny, yet still organized, helpful, & engaging. Learning a new instrument is slow-going, but Maness was always encouraging, & made the steps to success very clear & attainable. The only scary part is the final exam is 100% of your grade, but as long as you do the work each week, you will be more than prepared.
Professor Maness was an incredible guitar teacher. He was a tad rough around the edges, but that was all rooted in respect. He made sure we had the skills not only to pass the class, but to play guitar at a level where we could adapt to any situation. I feel bad because I already knew the guitar beforehand, but I still learned about scales.
I absolutely adore Professor Maness, he's such a character and he would brighten up my day( I had a 11 am ) and his smile is so endearing when you show up class with a matching level of enthusiasm as him. He shares epic stories about his experiences at the beginning of class and hammers into you a bunch of guitar theory, he also gives extra credit!
He's funny, engaging, and a true guitar master! Learning an instrument is tough, but his class makes it approachable and fun. With the right balance of challenge and knowledge, he takes you from complete beginner to entry-level player. Totally worth the money: an amazing teacher! practice daily and go to class!!! that will guarantee you an A+
I took one class with him many semesters ago (Spring '25), and I'm still upset about how I was treated. In the very first session, I felt berated and humiliated, and he ended the class as if nothing had happened. He also tends to push for high ratings - and only responds to negative ones, which says enough
andrew is a cool guy. he can be intimidating and a little rough around the edges, but at the end of the day he cares about every single person in the class and he makes sure that everyone is getting the help that they need to pass. he might comment some things that can leave you feeling uneasy, but try not to take it so seriously. great class!
He's funny & cares a lot about his students but he's def intense. I took this course to gain a bit more insight on how to become a better guitarist and it ended up feeling like a first sem guitar principle PI. I did learn a lot though. The final is your entire grade. He did give me an A though despite my horrid performance. Overall I recommend.
Maness was one of the most helpful professors I could have ever asked for. He is funny, passionate, intense, and very patient with every student, regardless of their skill set. Very straightforward (exactly what is required for someone trying to learn the instrument within a semester alone). By far, one of the best professors I've ever worked with.
Unbelievably funny, straightforward and knowledgable. If you practice what he shows you consistently you'll pass with flying colours. Always keeps class engaging due to his hilarious style of teaching. Shows you exactly what to do and how you can become absurdly proficiency at guitar within just one semester. Can't recommend him enough
Great teacher, as long as you practice a little bit, you will be fine for the final test.
I can't recommend Professor Maness enough. He is a passionate, knowledgeable, hilarious, and compassionate teacher that will help you become a proficient guitar player within a single semester. His homework is easy and he will help you if you are having any issues. If you have the opportunity please take him as a professor. You won't regret it.
Andrew Maness is a truly great teacher. He is very caring, funny, and patient. He is extremely knowledgeable and a great guitarist. What makes him a great professor is that he employs a variety of teaching methods, allowing all his students to understand the fretboard. He has all of the classes planned out and has clear grading criteria. TAKE HIM!
Prof. Maness will feel intense until you realize his sense of humor. Be prepared to practice, as he will basically force you to improve your guitar skills. He will believe in you if you show up and show that you care.
