Loves history, interesting. Don't take on a Saturday. Didn't cover Civil War. Tests are fair but hard. Hope you don't get a project to do instead of taking last exam.

One of the best prof's at the university. His lectures are always interesting, making what can sometimes be a dry subject fun, and he always brings in some of the personal details of the historical figures. Take him for any history class he teaches.

I didn't like the essay format for tests, but he always gave at a week notice. If you study you shouldn't have a problem. I also had a hard time with his lectures in the begining. He presented too much information at a time, it was hard to obsorb it all.

This professor will make you enjoy history! He teaches with A LOT of enthusiasm! I would take this professor for any history class. You need to study for the test but they weren't impossible. He is very approachable if you need help. Would HIGHLY recommend!

One of the best Profs in the dept. Made lectures very interesting and the exams are all essay but he is fair in grading them. Dry humor, but that makes the class alot more fun!! I'd take him for every history class if I could!

Didn't like how my grade was just based on three testes and how he said there are no make-ups but he let one girl make-up her test.

It was incredibly unfair how everything was based on three tests, and if you did bad on one then your grade suffered. And the final was totally different from the study guide. Class was very unhelpful, boring. Doesn't give any indication of grade, and wont offer any ways to help you fix grades

Most intereting history class I've ever had. Mr. Havrilcsak can get anyone interested. Grade is based on 3 tests and a final. They are all essay and with the exception of the final, all the questions come right from the study guide. Tests are graded fairly easily. Great class for those who aren't into history but need the credit.

Very Informative. Spent the entire class period furiously writing notes. His tests were a little too hard though. No matter how detailed you are in the essays, he will take off serious points for forgetting one thing.

Great Professor! Although you'll spend the whole class time taking notes, he allows tape recorders so if you miss anything you can always find it in your tape. Test are hard, but if you go to class and study you should be fine. Textbook coordinates with his lectures.

Understanding, fair, and informative. The tests are a breeze so three is plenty to get an A. I did all of 30 mins of studying and got an A for the semester. Overall a great class.

He has a lot of stories about people in history that make the class interesting. He gives a lot of info. for you to write down. His blue book tests are not that bad, just make sure you look at each topic on the study sheets. I will take him again.

In response to the previous rating,this is college. It would be wise to remember that this is not grade school and personal attacks are childish. You will learn in this class,and NO, it isn't easy. But all that matters is that he makes you think and learn. And read the textbook, the test material is all there for each chapter. No surprises OR lies.

Take good notes, bring in a recorder if you have to, and make sure you pay attention to even the smallest details. Know the terms written on the board or those repeated inside and out, they will likely be on the exam. Read or at least scan the text to keep up or do the review sheet.

All his tests are essay form, so if he likes you, you get good grades. Make sure you are on class on time, being late gets you on his bad side. Very knowledgable, however he can make you feel dumb for asking questions. Left out some American icons i felt he shouldnt, but hey less stuff to know for us right?

Don't take this professor, he wants to much detail and he makes u feel stupid. Stay away if possible. His grading scale is too hard and his grades are based on only 4 tests and he explains too fast. He is not realsitic in his lectures and like i said before, stay away if possible!!!

Terrible teacher. Talks too fast and answers questions poorly. Criticizes students whenever he can. Makes it nearly impossible to take notes and the textbook is a worthless pile of paper. Never NEVER have him as a teacher, unless you are Super History Man, you will fail or come very close to it. Tells too many stories and not enough facts.

I have taken alot of History classes and this was to worst. He is out to doom his sundents to fail, He takes every spark of the educational bug from you and strips you bare. You will leave his class uneducated, you will need to learn the information for yourself because he does not teach he only blows hot air. ADVOID AT ANY COST

It is to laugh! He always reviews for the exam, so you are not doomed to fail. Those "SUNDENTS" who left when the review began are the ones who probably didn't do well on their exams and they are blaming him for their own failures. I'll take Havrilcsak for any class he teaches and will not "ADVOID" him.

Not the hardest instructor I've ever had, but not the easiest either. I've had several classes with him and know him to be demanding, but fair. He's approachable in and out of the classroom, but be prepared for his style of teaching and be prepared to take notes because if you don't you won't make it. He doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Your hand may fall off due to writing so much. He speeds through his lecture but notes are very, very important. Do not be disruptive at all or he will call you on it.

This is going to be a neat class. mr. havrilcsak welcomes student discussion and opposing viewpoints. He lectures the hour, but took time to ask and answer questions. His delivery is just right, allowing ample time to get notes written down.

Mr. Havrilcsak is a terrific professor. Unlike some profs I've had, he is willing to admit when he makes a mistake. I respect that and respect him for doing it.

I dislike his grading method with a passion. He wants us to mind read what he wants in order to get full points. I highly recommend not taking his classes; he shouts for no reason and gives way too much reading in this class.

He is a good lecturer and lax on letting us out early, missing days, and letting us have pizza in class one time (and only one time!). I agree he seemed unfair and like a bear on grading papers, reducing grades for minute grammar and syntax errors. But I disagree about exams: these were graded fairly easily. Only good if you want a lax teacher.

I've been in 3 of Prof. Havrilcsak's classes and his policies are always the same. So you had pizza only once... he relaxed his own policy, and as for grading for grammar and syntax i say more power to him." This is university so you had better get used to the demands.

I like when dr. havrilcsak shouts, it's not for no reason, it's to emphasize a major point. As to getting out early, remember that he gave us the option to take our last break during the last 15 minutes of class. I'll take him again and recommend him to anyone. Good job!

Mr. Havrilcsak made a mistake on days that he wouild be absent. By hgis own admission it was his fault and he accepted fuill responsibility. I like that he emailed an apology to the entire class... that showed integrity. I liked his class and will take more classes from him. But for that one mistake, it was a very good class

Prof. Havrilcsak is a wonderful professor. Helpful, clear in his lectures, assignments and class requirements and demanding but fair on his exams and grading. He is very interesting to listen to and I'll definately take him aain and recommend him to others.

This was a great class! I liked the PowerPoint presentations he used... informative and instructive; he also used an occassional video to emphasize a time period being discussed -- first person observations and primary sources. He has a dry sense of humor that works into his lectures. If you want to take an interesting class, take Dr Havrilcsak

I've had all of my survey courses with Mr. Havrilcsak and have always found him to be demanding, but alwys friendly and helpful, he always responds to questions as quickly as possible. The text book he uses complements his lectures perfectly. Along with study guides and in-class reviews for exams, if you study, you'll pass.

The class was all lecture with a lot of note taking. I highly reccomend a tape recorder for any his classes. There were only three grades for this class, the three tests. All tests were essay and short answer.

take prof havrilcsak any chance you get.this guy knows his stuff.he is extremely smart and just lectured off the top of his head. i was amazed most of the time.gives good study guides too.tests are self explanitory and you will do well if you go to class, take good notes-write down everything he says-, and study!

Professor Havrilcsak is GREAT. All he does is lecture but he is SO interesting even if you don't like history. Attendance is NOT mandatory but don't skip his classes. If you listen and take notes, you'll do great on the exams (which are graded easy).

I honestly hated this class. Prof grades on ALL lecture, however will not allow recorders or laptops and deducts points if you spell his name wrong on an exam. Lectures out of sequence and thinks he is teaching a 6th grade class.

Dictator indeed...Havrilcsak doesn't all computers or recorders and his lecture is ALL OVER THE PLACE. He doesn't use powerpoint or any technology for that matter...didnt' love this class.

I've had Mr. havrilcsak for 3 classes now, and at first I had a hard time with no computers or recorders, but I adjusted... you can too. As for using powerpoint he DOES use them and it's very helpful. If you'd come to class you you'd know that. Grow up folks, this is university!

Not the most interesting class, but take notes and pay attention and you'll do fine for the most part. I never used the book and didn't really need to. Also, I recommend not cutting class because you'll miss a LOT of info from his lectures.

it is mandatory that you come to class to get your info.. u really need to pay close attention because he is very scattered.. if you take this class, take good notes for the written essay test by you.. he is a really nice guy, just pay close attention and you should do ok..

History was never one of my favorite classes, but Havrilcsak makes it exciting... I'm learning more now than I thought I would. His lectures are complementary to the book, so you need to read the boook as well to get a full picture of what's being discussed. Occassional videos enhance the class, too. I'll take more classes with him!

Mr. Havrilcsak definitely knows his stuff and is a good lecturer, but you NEED to go to every class in order to not miss important information! He also goes pretty fast and it's hard to write down everything important in time! As long as you study and take good notes, he gives pretty good study guides so you'll make it. Just expect to work hard.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear Prof Havrilcsak lived in the centuries he lectures about. He is so passionate. His lecture on the Civil War was so poignant as his voice choked with emotion when he talked of the Battle of Antietam and the loss of life. Take him for whatver class he teaches. Come to class ON TIME and make sure to read the book!

Prof. Hav was VERY passionate about what he taught but the lectures were long and often times boring. It's not cool how he doesn't allow laptops in class so it was hard to take great notes. I did not read the book because it was boring and took forever. Once you get the study guides though, you can go off of those to study. It can work out!

He knows his stuff, he knows how to share this knowledge, and he does this passionatly and effectively. There is not much more to ask for. The only problem I had was that on one exam I was marked off 6%(would have had a 100%) for now numbering my identifications and that a 94% is considered an A-.

He is SUCH a professor. Haha, he even wears those jackets with the elbow patches. He's deadly serious about history and knows his stuff. Wonderfully refreshing vocabulary, also. Know your stuff thoroughly for his tests, especially for the essays. And be prepared to take a lot of notes. Good teacher. Passionate (and that's always desirable)!

Found the class enjoyable from start to finish. He is very passionate about the subject matter. He wants to see students succeed and will spend time with you to make sure you understand what is being taught. Is very upfront from day one on how to do well in his class, as long as you do the work you will not have a problem.

Lots of things covered in lectures can't be found in the book, which can be pretty annoying when trying to study; good note-taking is a must. Big on essay questions, but prompts are open-ended and often in vague language, so the game is just to know what he thinks about any given thing and somehow work that into your answer. Good guy, average prof.

Prof H. is very passionate about what he teaches and has always tried to make sure you understand what he is talking about. Need to take good notes but he is always willing to answer questions during class or in office hours. Have enjoyed the classes that I have taken that he has been instructor for.

Great professor! He teaches history like he is telling a story and that makes it very interesting. Buy the Tindall and Shi book but not the others. I used T&S to look up info for the exams that he did not cover but never opened the other books. Do not miss class and study!!! He is a fairly easy grader. If you miss class you will be behind.

He's a nice guy, but I don't like him as a professor. Says classes aren't mandatory but if you don't show up to one, he loses respect for you and picks at anything you do wrong. Do NOT buy books; there will be a study guide with all of the information that you need for his tests. Can't use technology of any sort. Wish I would not have taken it.

I have had Havrilcsak for 2 classes and as a History major will probably have him for many more. He is a great lecturer and is very knowledgeable and passionate. While he does not take attendance, in order to get the best possible grade go to class. Exams are hard and many people struggle with the essays but I have not gotten less than a B.

He is a great professor, and his lectures are very clear to follow an understand. Do not waste your money on the book because one he goes over everything that is pretty much in the book, and two the study guides for the test tell you everything. I would defiantly take him again for another class.

Havrilcsak is a great professor and he's passionate about history so that makes his lectures interesting. I liked taking his class. You don't necessarily need the book, because he goes over everything in the lecture and gives a thorough study guide before tests. Shows movies frequently, if that's your thing.

He assigned us a 12-15 page paper. We were suppose to have 4 exams, but he only got to 3 of them. Rather than just basing our grade off of the first 3 tests, he made the 3rd test count as 2. I did well and got a 4.0 but I think that this was the worst possible solution. You could have a 4.0 going into the last test, and end up with a 2.0 after.

Havrilcsak is amazing! Great lectures from a nonpartisan standpoint and always says hilarious tidbits from the past. He probably recited 100 quotes this semester; the man has a steel trap for a mind! Needless to say, he requires extremely indepth answers on exams. Buy the textbook, he does not discuss everything in class that will be on the exam.

He knows his stuff. He is passionate about history and it comes through in his lectures. He's always spouting interesting facts or quotes that are usually funny, pertaining to the material, that gives the lecture some more context. He gives out no homework so you better show up and pay attention because he does not review well for the tests.
