JUST TOO HARD FOR A BEGINNING MICRO CLASS.Excellent teaching skills, very informative, problem is she thinks we are UC experienced students not JC. Essay questions on tests way to difficult. NEVER clear on what the essay questions will be. Makes all her own test questions up,never follows book questions or online test questions.
Just reads handouts in lecture. ZZZZZZZZZZ
This is without a doubt a difficult class. Prof. Holland's tests are not easy but manageable. Her grading of essay questions is fair but her multiple choice questions are tricky. Overall she is a good instructor who realizes that most of us will not become Microbiologists but health care professionals and therefore don't need to know everything.
Holland teaches at a university level, she came from UCD, and this is a JC. She hands out disorganized lecture notes and reads off the notes, little or no visual presentations. She also tends to not answer questions with absolute clarity before moving on to the next topic. Tests are hard and the final was INSANE, alot of uncovered material.
I really like the way she gives us the lecture notes so that we don't have to spend all of our time struggling to write. She's really organized, and tells it like it is.
This class is hard! However, she gives so many websites and tools to get info outside of class which is very helpful. She gives her lecture notes which helps because it is HARD to write so fast and spell correct. It is tougher than most classes I've taken and will have to take it again but her as a teacher, she's pretty good.
Gina was concise, organized and helpful. She covered all of the material that was on the tests, and made sure we understood the material we would be tested on. She was funny and engaging, and always willing and available to help with problem. That being said, she was VERY thorough, and the material was challenging.
WHAT EVER U DO...CHOOSE ANOTHER PROFESSOR...!!!!
very hard, would not advise taking this class!!!!!!!
has anyone taken her lab during summer school?? how is she for lab during summer? i plan on taking her lab
Great and wonderful person. Questionable teaching skills.
Seriously the worst professor I've had at Sac City. I would appreciated a lot if she writes things on the overhead or on the board but instead passes out lengthy lecture notes and lectures off of them. The B grade is easily attainable but an A grade is tough. Take Carberry if you want to learn micro. I'm a bio geek but she totally killed it for me
Yes, she's a nice person. HHOWEVER, she does not know what a QUIZ is. Her quizzes consists of more than 30 questions, and we have to complete it within 25 mins! In addition, her labs will make you want to jump off a cliff! Trust me, you have a better chance of winning the lottery than studying hard and getting an A in her lab.
made no sense at all, she is not that helpful
Attending lecture is useless-she is useless and not approachable. You're better off reading the book. Her lecture notes are choppy and she jumps around her own notes. As her saying goes "everything in your her lecture notes, lecture in class/lab, the book, and the lab manual is fair game." Sloppy teaching style-contradictory person.
She a really nice person, but her labs are kind of hard. Her tests and practical are challenging. She expects you to know everything. Will advice to take someone else if you are not a bio geek....
She is hard. Her weekly quizzes are like tests! Very low testbook use.
The class was very interesting. However, the teaching style and method was awful. The lectures consisted of reading off of power point. With such a broad area of topics, study guides would have been helpful. However, despite how much preparation a student made, it seemed to fall short of her expectations.
Take her class only if you've taken other biology courses prior. Impossible to understand what is going on if you haven't taken any other bio's. Extremely hard and confusing. If you can, take another teacher unless you are a Biology geek.
At a personal level she is very upbeat, but as a professor her lectures are VERY challenging. 5pts quizes for labs are 20-30 questions long, alot of fill in the blanks. Mid-term lab exams was a blank piece of paper and a whole bunch of microscopes that you had to name what they are. Spelling Counts!! Extremely Difficult!
Lectures contain A LOT of information, mostly right out of the textbook so get ready to write. She did provide a study guide/review for each chapter. Exams and quizes are intense so study hard! Some extra credit points available on exams and quizes. Professor Holland is a good professor but VERY demanding of her students. Good Luck!!
SHE'S NICE, APPROACHABLE AND HELPFUL BUT HARD TO UNDERSTAND. I WAS READY TO TAKE HER LAB EXAMS AND SO CONFIDENT TO GET AN A BUT WAS DISAPPOINTED. HER QUESTIONS ARE TRICKY. SHE PUTS A BUNCH OF STUFF ON EVERY STATION BUT ONLY A FEW ARE NEEDED.. I ALWAYS LOVE AND ALWAYS DO GOOD IN BIO BUT NOT IN HER CLASS. THE WORSE BIO PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD.
If you're financially struggling and do average in biology, this teacher is a big risk because most likely you're going to be wasting your time and money. She's very nice and intelligent, but teaching isn't her area. Her lectures fly by REALLY quick, and lab quiz is no joke! I would suggest taking another professor with more experience teaching.
Rediculous teacher. She doesnt explain things well. And has super high expectations, which are completly unreasonable.
Don't do it, take someone else. Better yet, take Micro anywhere but at SCC. Unless you can get carberry-goh, then go somewhere else. She is very nice, I like her on a personal level, but as my teacher NOT-AT-All. Way to high of expectations. I studied ALOT and still got D's on all her quizzes, and the lab tests were ridiculous.
On a personal level she is nice, very upbeat; but on an educational level - unless you are very knowledable in Bio, do not take her. Her lectures are fast, her labs are full of too much information, and her expectations are too high. She bragged about having single digit amounts of people by in her labs the end of the semster, and she wasnt lying.
during one of her lectures, he said Mendeleev instead of Mendel. judge for yourself whether she deserves a PhD
I have her for lecture and I am struggling. She is not organized and I am not sure how to get prepared for her exam. Would anyone let me know how I can able to obtain a B+ in her class? How to study for her test? She passes out too many handouts...which one will be on the test? lecture handout? Power point? or text book? Please advise!!!!
At first, I thought she was a horrible teacher, but once I started reading the chapters prior to the lecture everything became clear. Her lectures are entertaining and informative, but her tests tend to be tricky. She has really lightened up towards the end of the semester. You just have to do your part and stop blaming her if you're being lazy.
I don't advise taking her class. She is very educated on the subject of microbiology, however this does not entitle her to be a teacher. Enough said.
I have a huge interest in biology and was taking this class for fun....I've since dropped because her lectures were absurdly boring. I could hardly get through lectures awake. She will not explore the topic further than surface level. Take this class if you need some quality sleep.
Interesting class I admitt, but do not even trying taking this class if you have absolutely no background knowledge on different diseases and biology information. The lectures tend to get a bit more repitive than other courses offered, but in the end, she really knows what she is talking about and has some really hilarious comments.
If your taking a bio class for your GED, do not take this one. While there may be no homework except for a couple of presentations, your patience will be tested because this class is insanely boring and her methods of teaching and grading are not relative to any other professor. You've be warned!!
I just took this class and dropped it today! It was insanely and unjustifiably hard! I think she forgets that this is community college and that making the class so difficult brings down hopes of people who want to pursue a career in nursing. No matter how much studying you do, you will not pass this class without a "c". It is not worth it!
Got a mid-A in her class. You need to have taken biology and nutrition to be prepared for this course. Do your reading and understand the material not memorize it, however I have to admit her exams are tricky.
This professor is extremely HARD. If you have no prior knowledge if biology you will fail...like she says it's like taking Spanish 3 without knowing any Spanish at all. I had to drop her class towards the end. Exams are hard/tricky and too much info on handouts. Don't reccomend her. She is not helpful doesn't care if we fail.
She doesn't want anybody to pass her class, she makes her exams impossible and she is very intimidating. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND her at all.
not very helpful, she knows the material but she cant teach
Don't even bother with this lady. If its the only micro open just wait till another semester.... trust me... she needs to move to an isolated island where she will have no contact with people. Your words will he much harsher if you decide to take her course.
Is she an intelligent, knowledgeable, smart woman? Yes. Does she have a dark humor that's hard to relate to, but still funny? Yes. Is she a good professor? NO. She is not only intimidating (nobody ever wanted to ask her ANYTHING) but she also posted exam study guides from "YEARS AGO"- making it impossible to study! I do not recommend her at all.
This 4 unit class feels like 8 units. Lab and the lecture are not very connected. Lab practicals are extremely hard, 3 min per station(about 30 stations), 2 or 3 questions on each. All I have to say God Help u !!
Her bio 321 class is by far the hardest class i have taken in my life. Her tests are very very tricky. Its multiple choice, but she incorporates letters a-e on the scan tron. I had all A's this semester, except for this class. I failed her class. I am NOT looking forward to retaking this class again.
If your thinking about taking Ms. Holland, dont. Never in my life had I failed a class. This class was by far, the hardest class I have ever taken. Its recommended that for every hour you spend in class, you need to spend 2 hours outside of class for studing. For get that, spend 5 hours of studing per 1 hour and hope to pull a "C" in this class.
Because of all the negative ratings on against Prof Holland, I was very worried about taking her but I had to for my schedule. What I found was that she is great. She is very clear about what to study, she covers it all in class as well. She does expect that we are in class to learn though so if you don't want that, enroll with an adjuct and chill.
I don't know how Professor Holland got bad ratings! She is an amazing teacher who really knows her stuff and cares about her students. She answered everyone's questions all the time. Her class is hard and so are her tests, but she gives you all the tools to succeed. It is entirely up to you, but if you are lazy, you will fail!
very hard tests! She just reads over her powerpoints.it's annyoing and boring
I had microbio. Dr Holland is hard to get to know....but once you do she pretty charming and funny. She knows her material and knows her material. She is a bit opinionated about certain things and will let you know how she feels. I had an enjoyable experience in her class...but I can see how she would rub some people the wrong way.
Don't ever take her. She will make you feel stupid whenever you ask her something. She is the worst teacher because she doesn't care about her students. She should retire soon. I usually love my professors until I met her. Test questions are confusing and when you ask for clarification, she will embarrass you in class.
Professor Holland was great. She is very clear about what she expects from students and their work. Her tests were easy because she tells us exactly what to study for. If you study, you can't fail. For Bio 342, there's a research paper and one group presentation. It's not hard.
Weekly quizzes that are exactly what is on the Powerpoint that she reads from in class. You can just download the PP and take all the quizzes and get an easy A. Some very easy presentations here and there. Grades generously. Curves lightly. Loves answering questions. Unfortunately, she lets people have private conversations in class.
Prof Holland is amazing. She is kind, funny, helpful, and knows her material. If you want to be a slacker, don't take this course. But if you want to learn and are serious about it, I would recommend her. The class is VERY challenging and you have to work hard, but if you put in the time, you will be rewarded. Highly recommend!
This class was easy! Weekly quizzes and exams are straight off her powerpoints. No need to get any of the textbooks - I didn't open them once. There is one group presentation, one individual presentation and one research paper due. Just study the powerpoints, do your work and you'll get a good grade.
You must attend every class and expect to study apx 20 hours a week for a good grade. Do not slack off! Tests are based on the lecture slides and the notes you take in class. There are lots of bonus questions, so getting an A is possible if you study! Prof Holland is very nice and approachable, has a great sense of humor and knows her stuff!
HOLLAND IS A GREAT PROFESSOR. I RECOMMEND HER OVER ANY OTHER BIOLOGY PROFESSOR AT SCC.NOTE, THE CLASS IS VERRRRY HARD. IF YOU WANT A GRADE OF A C OR BETTER ATTEND EVERY CLASS!! TAKE EVERY SINGLE NOTE SHE WRITES ON THE BOARD. EVERYTHING SHE GOES OVER IN LECTURE WIL BE ON THE EXAM. MAKE THIS CLASS YOUR PRIORITY FOR THE SEMESTER AND YOU'LL GET AN A..
GREAT MICRO TEACHER! YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE? STUDY OF THE POWER POINTS, WRITE EVERYTHING SHE WRITES ON THE BOARD, TAKE PICTURES OF THE MICROBES, MAKE FLASHCARDS, AND STUDY EVERY NIGHT 3-5+ HOURS. USE THE BOOK ONLY AS A REFERENCE, IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND THE NOTES. IT IS COLLEGE, WONT BE EASY. GOOD LUCK AND STUDY HARD!!! ITLL BE WORTH IT AT THE END.
I took this course 2 semesters ago, so it's been a little while, but I remember Prof. H. was a kind lady. Any BIOL class can be a little hard to grasp, but the tests & HW weren't very hard as long as you put in some effort & study. She gave us study guides for quizzes/tests. Overall, pretty easy B, & an A shouldn't be too hard either!
Simply put Dr. Holland is the best teacher I have ever had. She is very passionate about Micro and it shows. If you want an easy A then she is not the teacher for you. BUT if you want to acquire the techniques needed to succeed in college and career, then she's it. You will learn to be thorough at everything. An A is all up to you not Dr. Holland.
Holland is nice to you if you know what you're doing. If you don't and ask questions, she'll have something smart to say right back; therefore, she most likely won't give you a real answer. She likes having conversations w/ other students about non-microbiology subjects.
Dr. Holland is a great professor. Granted I took this class after receiving my BS, but she is more than fair. Plus she offers up to 10 extra credit points on each lecture exam and 20 extra credit points on each lab practical. Study both the lecture powerpoints and study guides she posts online and you will get an A no problem.
Take her!! One of the best biology teacher I have ever taken. Provides study guides for all the exam. Gives you hint on what will be on the exam. If she writes something on the board, that means it will b on the exam. Esp the tables. Multiple choice questions n short answers on lecture exam. She curves all the exams. Very helpful and understanding.
Easy class, easy pass. Just study the lecture materials and attend class everyday. Lots of extra credit too, so don't let those them slip by.
Dr. Holland is great and cares about how well you do so long as you do too. She is very helpful, available, and offers a ton of extra credit (you will need them). Plus, she is funny! Some things could be clearer and labs could coincide with lecture a lot more but I def recommend her. Just study, study, and study some more.
Do not take this professor if you are looking for an easy A. Professor Holland is demanding and at times, exhausting. Study groups are a must if you want a good grade. That said, you will learn a lot from her and she is passionate about the subject. She is engaging as well and had us laughing throughout the semester. Extra credit on exams :)
This class is hard and you will need to put in a lot of study time. Not an easy class but if you study, off her PowerPoint lectures, student notes, study guides, and book, you should do okay. She's a great teacher but it's a very hard subject! Study!
The tests are so tricky that even if you studied for days you'll get a D or F! She doesn't care about how many other classes you're taking , she says that her class is the one that matters. Do not take her unless it's the only class and if you have hours on end to study. Final is 17 chapters all together! Class started w44students and ended with 6
Now that I'm at UC Davis, I really appreciate professors like Dr. Holland! She is willing to help you understand if you're willing to take the time. If you think her tests are too hard, transitioning to a university is going to be tough.
Professor Holland is very passionate about her area of expertise. However, when the class average for lab exams is 50% it seems that it may not be the students who are the problem. It seems like is most of us in her lab are passing our lecture section (with a diff teacher) but struggling with Holland. recommend a different teacher for this class.
Professor Holland is not helpful at all. Although she is passionate about what she does, she really doesn't care about you. If you ask her a question, expect not to get an answer. Also makes you feel dumb for even asking a question, so why even bother! Don't take her unless you are a self taught person!
Professor Holland is an amazing teacher! She is knowledgable, intelligent, cares about her students and tries to make this hard material as clear as possible. She tells you what you are expected to know, very organized with lecture slides, students notes, practice tests she provides. Lots of extra credit on every test, and did I say HILARIOUS?
Had Prof. Holland for the lab section only. She seemed disinterested in the students and kept leaving the room throughout the labs. You can do well if you pay attention and read the lab manual and assigned chapters in the textbook, but she is not going to hold your hand and tell you what to do.
Nice and funny lady! She answered all questions that I had. I got an A in her class and all I did really was read through the labs. Lab practicals are a little tough, but just go through the labs and the notes and you'll do fine.
Great Professor to take just don't mess around in her class or miss any classes. Take good notes, review, review, review as much as possible. Make good team to study with. Take pictures of slides, mark it and study it. Try to attend open lab as well. This class is tough!!!
Good class. If you've already taken a hard class like Bio 430/431 and did well with good study habits, then this class will be a piece of cake. Not the most engaging lectures, but you'll learn some interesting things.
This professor is funny, her class was very easy for me being a biology major. She doesn't require a book and all the information need is in the PP lecture so make sure you show up and you should do very well!! She make the class fun and goes off topic that are fun, but will defiantly turn you into a germaphobe by the end of the semester.
Prof Holland loves what she does, but does not engage with students. Don't expect to get an answer if you ask questions. She can be funny at times. Her tests are super hard. Major studying and too much material. Does not teach, only gives instru. Even with the tutor's help, it was not possible to pass. Lots of studying on your own. Dn't recommend!
Easiest of the bio classes I've taken at SCC, but I still suggest ramping up your study habits before you take this course. I suspect that the students that didn't do well need to be spoon fed the info. Seriously, just read the book, lab manual, and your notes. Study and quit crying. This is college :)
Prof. Holland was one of the best professors Ive had so far. She covers a LOT but gives you everything you need to succeed. If you understand how college works, put in the study time, and ask plenty of questions, she will help you and you can easily get an A. The class is HARD but doable. STUDY and take notes. She wants you to succeed.
Lots of material, but not difficult. Don't expect to be spoonfed. Expect to study. Easy to get an "A" if you do the work. Seriously, easy class if you keep up and do the work. Read all of the material, read all of the labs. Not as difficult as these whiny babies below say she is.
Prof Holland is a hilarious and engaging lecturer but her class is a lot of self study. 1 hour minimum per day and at least 3+ hours on the weekends, and flashcards galore. To succeed I used her recommended old students' quizlet, and studied pretty much everything religiously. Her tests are tricky even if you know everything. Do all extra credit!
Just keep up. You don't need to study everyday, but start studying a week before the lab practicals and exams. Labs are easy. Content is easy. Lecture is easy. I just studied on the weekends, and not every week. Gina is cool and will answer your questions. Don't be intimidated. She's nice.
If you want to fail in BIO, go ahead take her class. you will not learn anything at all because she is not a professor who would care about the students. Don't bother yourself to ask her any question. she want you to do everything and find every answer to your question by yourself. Though Grading and exams. 2 mints per 5-6 questions to answer. GDLK
Not clear about class objectives. It is not about level of difficulty but more about nonsenses. You will be struggling to make sense of things and you won't make it. You will lose her every two minute what she is talking about. She will throw away things from everywhere on D2L. Incomplete sentences on ppt. and lecture notes. DON'T RECOMEND
Biology with any proffesor is go hard or go home, test were bases on material no suprises, i could have easilly gotten them all right if i studied extra, Had Holland for Lecture and Lab and passed with an A, everyone that is complaining will probably complain about the next class, study Hard that simple and you pass especially with lots of E.C
I took Microbio with her this past summer 2019 and it was the toughest class I ever took in my entire career as a student. (already have a BA from a UC) However, Prof. Holland was super kind and polite and did everything she could to help out the class. She offered A LOTTTT of extra bonus points on every single exam and lab prac. Very nice lady.
Her lectures are really interesting. Really amazing professor and this is the best class I have ever taken. Hands down the quality of the lecture are SO MUCH BETTER than the classes at UCD. For this class: IF YOU STUDIED HARDA, you reap what you sow. Stop expecting an A without putting work in. This is literally so much easier than classes at UCD.
Prof Holland made Microbiology approachable and the knowledge from this class is already paying off. Do not listen to the other negative reviews. Microbio requires putting effort if you want an A regardless. Undergrad UCD sci classes are harder than this (not to say this class is easy). Prof Holland's structure will prepare for that if you transfer
work heavy but gives lots of opportunity for extra credit. great teacher. pre-recorded voice-over powerpoints as lecture. uses proctorio. 3 lecture exams, 2 lab exams, lab quiz each week, and a comprehensive final. she makes it very easy to succeed in the class, it up to you to put the work in.
If you want to fail in BIO, go ahead take her class. you will not learn anything. There is NO LECTURE. Exams DO NOT MATCH the information that was provided to study for the tests. Most students struggled to pass the class. With homework and quizzes every week, where to find the time to study for the impossible exams? DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
Most students failed exams. You may be able to pass class if extra points are given. Don't count on getting an "A" or a "B" in the class. Even if you are normally an A/B student. One of the worst professors ever taken.
Boring class, prof, lectures, and even more boring labs. To pass, just memorize everything from the ppts and completely disregard the textbook as the lecture/lab exams are all just material from the ppts. Labs are just her yapping and then you walk around looking at photographs of microbes and taking pics. All else is easy.
