A very knowledgable man with a limited idea how to communicate that knowledge in an effective way. Assigns about 200 pages a week of reading, sometimes more, and most of it is a waste of time. Lectures are extremely disjointed. I had him for discussion where he was better. He really cares, but the class is takes tons of time, be warned.
Most of the class is about the Ottoman Empire, which he seems to know a lot about. However, he has absolutley no idea how to convey this to his students. His lectures are almost incomprehensible. Grading is done by his TAs and seems to be completely arbitrary--you get no comments at all about your work.
Knows tons of Middle East history (especially Ottoman) and is kinda quirky. However, his lectures are horribly boring and often his accent is hard to understand. If you get him for discussion, often it will end up turning into a lecture. Not a hard grader though, if you do some of the readings. Overall, dont take this class unless you have to
The class starts off at a really fast pace, but sort of slows down by the end of the semester. He gives a ton of reading but it's not too hard to get a good grade in his class. He gave us the questions prior to the midterm and the final was a take-home essay graded by the TAs. His lectures are a little hard to sit through, but he's not bad.
Terrible lecturer, unclear, unorganized, rarely have a point. Sure he seems nice, knowledgeable and even makes a few jokes, but that doesn't make up for the fact that he CANNOT teach. I loved my TA and that was about the only thing that kept me engaged. Workload was manageable to easy and grading depended on TA. Don't take if you don't have to.
Professor Agoston is a really nice guy but has a very thick accent that made it extremely difficult to understand anything in class. The lectures were pretty boring and I learned everything in discussion. There are a lot of useless readings to do and you can get by with just cramming before the midterm. The final was an essay and easily graded.
I'll try to be fair... Professor Agoston is a brilliant scholar and a great professor... for a graduate level course. I'm a graduating history major, and I've never worked so hard for a grade in my life. Accent is hard to understand, lectures are scattered and hard to keep up with. Take him for one of his upper level classes, but not Mid. East 160.
I took Middle East I with Abi Mershed and absolutely LOVED the class. I then took the first part with Agoston, and hated it. He clearly knows his Ottoman history, but his disorganization, heavy accent and boring lectures prevents the professor from showing what he really knows. He assigns an unrealistic amount of reading as well.
This class ruined my semester. There were hundreds of pages of readings, lectures were impossible to sit through and they never actually went in any sort of direction.
Worst class and professor i have ever had. Do not take his class. I love this subject, and he made me hate it.
A terrible, terrible teacher. Signed up for the class to fulfill my history requirement, ended up dropping the course because he was the worst prof. I've ever had. Assigns Heavy reading, gives boring lectures, has strong accent, unapproachable, not very friendly
The discussion group ended up being very fun, but that depends on your TA. It was a hit or miss with the lectures, some being boring and others extremely interesting. How much you enjoy this class really depends on how much you enjoy history classes in general. I wouldn't take this class if you are just looking to fulfill the requirement.
wonderful person, i really liked it.
History MIddle East 1- Lectures were absoultely incomprehensible and boring. Hard to understand his accent. Gave material that often times was irrelevant, and if there were any relevant parts, it was difficult to detect after being snowed under by the heap of readings. It's an easy class that is TA dependent however.
Honestly, the lectures are unnecessary if you do the reading and participate in the discussion section. I did not interact once with Agoston and I got an A-. The reading sometimes is a lot, but there's only one midterm, and its clear what you have to study. The final essay(s) is relatively straightforward. Don't be afraid of this course.
Not as bad as others say, but not the type of professor who will get you interested in ME history. I've heard people worry that they would lose interest in it from the class, but this fear is unwarranted. If you're interested in ME history and are NOT a freshman, you will do fine. In the end, he knows that the material is hard and grades easily.
Accent is so thick it's really hard to understand him. Boring class, but graded easily. Midterm isn't hard (so long as you study) because he gives you a study guide that's comprehensive. The final is two take-home essays that don't require you to have attended lecture. Lectures are hell (don't go). He's the most disorganized prof ever.
Prof Agoston is not as bad as most people say he is. Yes,he does have an accent but he really tries to make sure you understand the material if you go to him for help. mid term is not too bad, this class didn't make me hate history, I did learn a lot about the mid east, readings are very long and unnecessary, either read or pay attention in lecture
Totally incomprehensible. Grades randomly (you will never see your presentation or personal essay grades or final essay) and you will probably get A-.
great prof! One of my fav prof at Georgetown! lectures are a little dry but he knows what he's talking about. long readings but midterm and final are graded pretty easily. midterm is just memorization, take this class if you want a requirement done and don't mind memorizing for a good grade
One of 3 profs for my study abroad in Turkey (villa). Saw him everyday for 4 months, took 2 amazing history classes with him. Very knowledgeable, had interesting discussions. Has great stories from his life. Fair grader, flexible with changes in syllabus to accommodate students. I'm NOT a history guy but really enjoyed it all. A funny joker to boot
Not for everyone, but one of the most interesting and engaging classes i've taken. he demands a lot, but is helpful and also has a great, if quirky sense of humor. he made me infinitely more interested in the region!
This class is different to many history classes I have taken, but in a good way. The readings are quite heavy, but are really specific and interesting. As well as the class content itself, I learnt a lot about the study of history itself and some useful analytical tools. Whenever I went to see him Agoston was always approachable and very helpful.
not only changed the way i thought about the region, but also how i studied history. prof. agoston's knowledge about the region is vast (plus, he tells amusing stories). i entered the class with little background, and while it was challenging, it was very much worth the work. i would definitely recommend this class.
Found his accent kind of hard to understand, but as a teacher he was very good. He definitely knew what he was talking about, and loved the material.
Prof. is so nice, lectures a bit scattered anf gets off on tangents because he knows EVERYTHING about the ME. Fair, easy tests b/c terms are given ahead of time, and interesting.
Lectures are boring and not helpful. An impossible level of reading is assigned. Prof Agoston is very nice and smart but not the best teacher. All learning is done based around the study guides given about a week before each test. Hard, but manageable. Not interesting. Didn't learn much.
TAKE HIM! He's a little bit all over the place when it comes to lecturing, but the lectures are pointless. I barely went to any of the lectures and didn't do ANY of the assigned readings, and got an As. He is very approachable guy, but be ready for a 5 minute rambling answer for every question asked. He gives a study guide before tests.
Professor Agoston assigns a significant amount of reading, which you don't necessarily have to do. He is approachable and grades fairly. I would urge you to take his class if you are interested in the subject matter otherwise it drags on and he can get too specific on certain details. In any case, I deem Prof. Agoston to be an above avg. prof.
ME His 2Awful class... Ended up with decent grade, but I learned nothing- I just crammed some facts before tests that mean nothing to me now.
His accent is so thick you literally cannot understand what he is saying. On top of the that the lectures are boring. The exams are not that bad, though.
Professor Agoston is both an intellectual and an effective teacher---a rare combination. His class is very engaging (if you have a minimum interest in the subject matter) and his exams/papers are fairly graded. Additionally ,he is very approachable and down to earth. I would highly recommend him!
I had him for Middle East History I. It is a fairly easy course - lots of reading, but not required to do well; lectures are pointless; discussion sessions are required and your TA (or in my case the Professor) will grade the exams, papers, quizzes, etc. His lectures make your head spin and he doesn't offer feedback.
Professor Agoston is very excited during his lectures, and is a preeminent expert in the field. His Middle East 1 history course is exceedingly easy if you can memorize large amounts of information, and is actually quite interesting as well. He is a nice guy who loves to have students talk with him about the course, even freshmen.
middle east history I class is amazing. It does, however, it require a LOT of work and extraordinary memorization skills. His exams are excruciatingly hard &require a lot of intensive preparation but they are graded fairly. He is not the kind of professor who will refuse to give you full credit if you deserve it. He is Very interested in the topic.
Lectures involved minutiae about the Ottomans, and only some of the earlier lectures touched on Abbasids, Safavids, Mamluks, Mongols. Expects students to memorize ridiculous amounts of information, and to spit it up at the exams. Assigns ~100-200 pages of reading. Nice guy, clearly very knowledgeable and passionate, not good teacher.
Class is definitely skewed towards the Ottomans (2/3 tests dealt with them), and the reading can be tedious--especially now that he requires you post a half-page reflection on the readings prior to every class. Pretty easy though if you can memorize a hundred or so terms before the tests and show up to class.
I've had the pleasure of taking not 1 but 2 of Prof Agoston's classes. He is a great teacher who is not only passionate about what he studies but also extremely accomplished in his field. Yes there's a good amount of reading but it's a history class and Agoston is very helpful and always available. I definitely recommend taking him while at gtown!
He is very passionate about the subject material and knows a lot about it, particularly the Ottomans (his expertise). He is a delightful teacher--funny and light-hearted. Many students don't attend the lectures or do the readings, but if you are passionate about the subject, choose to participate and read the materials, then you will learn a lot.
Great class that covers a lot of material from European and Ottoman history. Prof. Agoston is extremely knowledgable and a remarkably fair grader, but you definitely have to put in the work. The bulk of the grade comes from a research paper which you are given a lot of freedom with.
Took him for Middle East I; 2 tests and an optional final (best 2 of the 3 grades count), 2 short response papers and a 10 minute presentation. Lectures were hit or miss, but as long as you show up and memorize 60 or so terms for the tests you'll do fine. Very easy grader and a nice guy, he knows his stuff, would definitely recommend taking him.
Very Good class. The readings are light but covers the topics sufficiently deep. Gabor is a master at what he teaches and selects just the appropriate sources to get the points across. There are two response essays based upon the readings and 3 tests of which 2 of them counts. Overall the class is easy and interesting. Please take it.
Prof. Agoston is a great professor. That being said, this is the sort of class you have to give proper time and attention to. The bulk of the information you'll be tested on is going to come from the readings. Personally I put this course on the back burner and it came back to get me at the end. Overall it's a great class. Take advantage of it.
Professor Agoston is a really nice guy who knows everything there is to know about the Ottoman Empire. He's a fair grader and very helpful if you ask for help. The 2.5 hour class was long and sometimes slow, but I ultimately enjoyed the class and would take it again. Don't wait to start the final paper.
His classes are going to seem very intimidating and you're going to feel like the world is ending; however, Professor Agoston is on your side and is always willing to help you. The TA's are always available to help also. I would recommend you start studying at least a few days before the test because it is a lot of memorization. Great guy!
I've taken prof. Agoston for both the gen-ed and an upper level history class and he's the man. He's extremely knowledgeable in his field and loves to ramble, so some might find lectures dull (not me) . He's very clear about assignments (not many), and he's a very lenient grader:skim the reading, show up, participate and you'll do fine. Take him!
Lectures are unclear and pretty unhelpful. Study guides are provided and lowest test grade drops; however, you have to learn/find all the information on your own, which is tough since there isn't a real textbook for the course. Plus side is that the final is optional. Participation is a large chunk of the grade and theres one 10 min presentation.
Agoston is one of Georgetown's greatest gems. If you don't speak Arabic or aren't versed in Arab studies, you may feel out of your depth at first. Yet Agoston is extremely helpful outside of class and happy to give you books to get you up to level. The readings are fascinating, Agoston is a hilarious lecturer and you will learn so much from him!!
Gabor's lectures are completely incomprehensible and utterly useless. Readings are a waste of time and have nothing to do with the exams. The TAs grade arbitrarily. Two extremely difficult midterms based on STRAIGHT memorization of 70+ terms and names and dates -- all fill in the blank. I learned NOTHING from this class. Avoid to keep your sanity.
A good professor and very knowledgeable about his topic. Concious about helping students and was helpful with research projects. Seminar at times could be tangential, but normally on interesting tangents in fairness!
Agoston is a dry lecturer who tends to read from books rather than speak from his thoughts. These lectures are mandatory, but they are unhelpful as it is hard to pick out important info. The TAs however are super helpful (Andrey is incredible) and the exams clearly reflect the material on the provided study guides, so the class is not too hard.
The professor is incredibly well spoken, and very knowledgable about Ottomans. Lots of reading assigned, skim one and make sure to participate. Very approachable outside of class, and is more than willing to help students as well as just chat. Exams are memorization based, start two to three days before.
I was not a big fan of history and left my core history courses until senior year. However, professor Agoston made me fall in love with Ottoman history. He has profound knowledge of the subject he teaches and is also a great lecturer. He is willing to help you outside of class and improve your grades, if you are willing to put in the effort.
Agoston is by far one of the best professors I ever had. He is incredibly engaging and although the material may be difficult at times, its hard to notice as he keeps it very entertaining and interesting.
Agoston, while clearly passionate about Middle Eastern history, is a poor lecturer. He fails to engage students and I found his lectures very hard to follow - there was just too much information. We have an exam the TUESDAY after Thanksgiving, and all of your papers/midterms are due in the same week. You can do it before if you want. Reading heavy.
Although the lecture is not structured as well, it is an easy class to get an A if you skim through your readings and have basic knowledge of the Middle East. He also drops your lowest exam grade. Easy A if you put in a little effort.
Agoston is a good prof for upper level classes where you can actually participate but can be deadly (Ive heard) in lecture style classes. For his upper level classes its all papers so you dont need to memorize everything (which is good because he does assign a lot of reading). Solid choice, especially if interested in Ottoman history.
Professor Agoston is one of those few teachers that pushes his students while not being overbearing which is very rare quality among professors. His lectures are also very insightful and do not enforce a particular historical argument on his students. The grading and expectations are clear and fair. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
He's a sweet man and very reputable in this field. But you will read an ungodly amount. Lectures are mandatory& insanely dry. He reads paragraphs during lectures with death by ppt. Tests are easy to do well- just wiki everything for a couple days before the test & easy A. Study guides are very useful also. Participate at discussion sections (huge)!
Agoston is incredibly knowledgeable about the topics covered in the class... that being said, some of his lectures are hard to follow as he includes very specific details/tangents that are hard to put in context. Grading is really up to your TA. Reading was rather extensive for each class, but assignments were very straightforward. Learned a lot!
Overall, very unprofessional. An overwhelming majority of the class is taught via massive amounts of readings, rather than the Professor himself. His weekly 50-minute lecture adds little to nothing to the course, and the discussion sections twice a week get extremely redundant. Quizzes include niche terms not even on his study list.
I really like Gabor and took a few of his classes (HIST-160 too). That said, lectures can be hard to follow but he is great in smaller groups where you can ask questions if you get lost (which does happen with his lectures). If you show you care at all (office hours to ask questions), he gives you the benefit of the doubt. Great stories too - ask!
Professor Agoston's lectures tend to be very dry and consist mainly of him reading off the powerpoint. The class really depends on your TA imo. If your TA is nice and interesting and an easy grader, the two weekly discussions won't be nearly as bad. Also a lot readings every week, and the 10 quizzes (5 map, 5 content) require a lot of memorization.
Professor Agoston is the opposite of flexible. There is absolutely no missing class, if you make a mistake then you are screwed, and ZERO EXTENSIONS. I found his lectures very dry, although I did enjoy the discussion section with our TA. The content is interesting, but the environment of the class, created by the professor, was unnecessarily toxic.
Gabor was not a good professor. The course is mostly taught through copious amounts of reading, his lectures are boring and unorganized, and I didn't feel engaged throughout the course. TAs do the grading and discussion sections, and my TA was amazing. I learned a lot, but I would rather take a history course on another region than take 160 again.
Some of these reviews are unfair. His lectures can drag and sometimes he goes on unrelated tangents, but he does want students to succeed. He provides plenty of clarity about what's being tested and study aids on Canvas. He has lots of good stories too, but don't take this class if you're lazy. Don't skip class and be sure to participate a lot.
Agoston is caring and clearly very knowledgeable. Lectures and discussions can be boring, but you can easily get by doing none of the reading. Quizzes and map quizzes are open note. Essays graded generously. I didn't learn a lot, but did well and would take again.
By far, worst professor I have had at Georgetown! While the assignments aren't too hard, his grading criteria is unclear and lectures are super dry! Despite other comments, DO NOT TAKE this class.
I really enjoy Professor Agoston's classes. He's knowledgeable and passionate. He cares deeply about Middle Eastern history and is an expert in the field. As a student, prepare to do a lot of reading. However, you get what you put in. I will have taken three of his classes during my time at Georgetown. I would take more if I could.
This is definitely a hard class. But one that's worth it. Prof. Agoston is so well-knowledged in his field and while can be difficult to keep up with the readings, it always ends up being worth it during the discussions. But again, only take it if you are willing to read that many readings. (He is such a caring an awesome professor).
Definitely super knowledgable and passionate, he cares a lot. lectures were disorganized and hard to follow even with slides. tends to drift off on tangents which can be confusing but if you pay close attention the material is useful and interesting. A TON of reading for each class, near imposible. Final was oral-had to know the entire course.
Agoston is extremely knowledgable and caring/kind, but he often spends 45 mins on a small tangent/detail that makes the lecture impossible to contextualize. This class was easy but hard. Objectively, it should have been easy but it's just so confusing that it turns hard. 100+ pages of reading per night. Oral final you had to memorize entire course.
Grading criteria: Two 500 word essays, 2 pg book review, 5 open book/note quizzes with terms given in advance, 5 map quizzes, presentation (graded fairly easy), participation (can have one absence + he counts how much you raise your hand in discussion), oral final (questions given in advance but had to know entire course due to follow up questions)
Prof. Agoston is clearly an expert in the class content and is accessible, but his lectures were unorganized and hard to follow. Assignments graded by TAs. Readings were unmanageably heavy. Hardest part of the course was the oral final exam (Agoston grades), but in all fairness, he gives the questions in advance as was done for all other quizzes.
Prof. Agoston is a great professor. He might be difficult to follow, but he's surely an expert on the topic, and his interest rubs off on you.
Every class someone does a presentation on the readings for the week, and then class is just a discussion based off of the topics in the readings. Super easy and super manageable. Professor Agoston is incredibly knowledgeable, and does a great job of explaining historical events. Easy and clear grading. Highly recommend.
Prof. Agoston is very knowledgeable about Middle Eastern History, but his course was relatively difficult. The readings took up a lot of my time, participation is so critical in class, and the oral examination at the end expected you memorize the entire course. However, it was worth it in the end, because I ended up learning a lot. I recommend it.
Would highly recommend his ME 1 for early history req. Fairly easy class because everything (besides final) is open note and TAs are known to be chill for the most part. Lectures are boring at times but he's definitely a real expert. Stopped doing readings but I still learned a lot. Good class.
Lectures are pretty boring and rambly. Discussion is important but chill TAs make it pretty easy to get participation credit. Stopped doing readings after 6ish weeks and was fine. Quizzes are kind of annoying due to formatting but study beforehand and you'll do well. 2 response papers and 1 book review are easy. Oral final is not ideal but doable.
Prof is so sweet and funny. open note quizzes (easy and drops the lowest), 2 500 word reflection papers (also not too bad) and a 500 word book review. genuinely cares about his students and history as a whole. 10/10 would recommend any day of the week and ignore all bad reviews. barely did any reading, but still learned so much.
Professor Agoston cares a lot. He can ramble during lecture, but he's funny and incredibly knowledgable. Above all wants his students to learn. I really liked this course, and thought it was one of the most interesting ones I've taken. Readings are really well chosen and interesting. It doesn't take too much effort to do really well in this class.
Really interesting class and learned a lot but ungodly amount of readings every week. Stopped doing all of them after a while and was fine, but there's in class discussion every week so you had to stay on top of that. Super easy quizzes, oral final probably the worst part with all the follow up questions he asks
Prof Agoston is a caring and approachable professor. There's a lot of reading each week but as long as you do your best to understand the topic of the week, you should be fine. Be ready to participate in weekly discussions, as it is a big part of your grade. Overall - the class is very interesting and he is always willing to help in office hours.
This class was overall fine. You can get away without doing many of the readings, but make sure to participate in discussions. Lectures were a bit rambly and honestly not that relevant. Try and go to his office hours at least once so he know you before the Oral Final (he will ask easier questions if he likes you)
