The first half of the semester is fine. Second semester, Gabor starts teaching Calculus, and it is a disaster. His teaching style is very different (confusing). He can be funny at times, though, without even knowing it. You just have to experience this class to know what I'm talking about.
His accent needs some time getting used to. but he is a good teacher. he does everything in detail (step by step), so even people not good at math can understand the problems. Do the extra credit!!! helps your grade by up to 3 percentage points. The first part of semester is hardest; 2nd part easy; 3rd part is also very easy if you've taken calc.
Great teacher, in my opinion. Here's why: he is like a high school teacher; does everything very slowly, showing every step. So even the dumb-asses (sorry) in the class understand if they pay attention. Do the extra credit!! Also, I don't remember if a book was required for the course, but if it was, we never used it.
This class was ok. Gabor does take everything step by step, but the pace is really almost too slow sometimes. He wants a lot of details with steps explained, so I felt kind of like I was in a middle school math class. His handwriting and accent are both kind of hard to understand at first. Overall a pretty easy class though.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Explains even the toughest of concepts very well. Makes things look very easy, gives very difficult and fun HWs
One word... SOVIET! But really he's a funny guy who tries his hardest to be as clear and basic as possible. The TA's who grade the homework and tests aren't so nice though.
Goes very slowly which is good and bad. But all around really nice patient guy who makes sure that you understand what's going on constantly.
Gabor is very helpful and fair-paced. He goes over every step to ensure clarity. HOWEVER, he has a very unfair extra credit "coupon system". He definitely has favorites who get all the coupons, while he ignores the others. Also, it affects final grades so the grading system is not standard at all. These coupons challenge UNC's academic integrity.
One will need a fifth of vodka to get through this class; the time spent on pre-calculus in a calculus class is beyond ridiculous. Over half the class was spent doing tedious assignments that must be completed in a very communist-like fashion; Only one way to do it down to the letter. Leaving this class makes one so mad they will see red.
You will use the textbook for all of the homeworks. I think there were 18 HWS. He drops the lowest (one or two) homeworks. Redo ALL of the hw for the exams and you will make an A in the course. The only reason I made a B+ was bc I didn't redo the hw for the second exam (everyone butchered that one). Overall I think he is a great teacher.
Very Nice person and and good at explaining concepts. HW are helpful but time consuming.
I took his class because it was required for my major and he was the only professor teaching it. Gabor has a lot of quirks that you'll notice right off the bat but overall he knows his subject really well and is helpful at office hours. Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly encourage it because this class waits for no man.
His class is like being in middle school all over again. You may know how to do calculus, but if you don't show it in "patakulus" formatting then you're wrong. Answer right? Half Credit because you didn't show your work right. Answer Wrong? Most you can expect is half credit IF you do your work right. Beware of this going in.
If you haven't taken calculus before this class, I suggest doing so as he is not the most clear professor & makes you learn everything the long way, which can be very confusing. The tests are directly from the homework, so as long as you redo them before the exams you should do fine. You don't need to attend class, & he gives out extra credit daily
Incredibly arbitrary grading. If you know calculus, he will make you think you know nothing even if you aced it before. The way he makes you think makes the math unnecessarily difficult. Even if there is an easier, clearer way of doing something, it is wrong.
This is a really easy class, especially if you've taken calculus before (highly recommended). Tests are identical to homework, so redo all of them before the test and its not bad at all. He does grade very strictly, so its good to come to class to learn how he likes things shownexplained. Plus he gives out A TON of extra credit for coming.
Basically if you've never taken Calculus before you are finished. Even if you have taken high level statistics classes or a fair amount of high level Math courses he will make you think you know nothing about Math. Worst professor I have ever had.
Gabor is a very good professor if you are willing to put in the effort. You can earn a ton of extra credit in class by his funny coupon system. He wants you to learn, and understand math, instead of just memorizing formulas -- this was actually my first math class ever, where I really UNDERSTOOD stuff. He has some quirks, as previously noted.
Many homework are fun but tough, the hardness of exam varies a lot among years, and the grading scales are not very clear, so be prepared! But Prof Pataki is a good guy who is funny and kind to students most of the time. His teaching style is confusing in the beginning, but once you get used to it, the lectures turns out to be easy and clear.
The fact that he has an A- grade is one of the most absurd things I have ever seen. His grading is the most ridiculous things ever and I truly suggest getting out of this class before you even enroll in it. Pataki's way or the high way. Also do not let him learn your name because he will constantly call you out in class. AVOID GABOR PATAKI!!!!!!!!
This is a "wake up, you are not in Kansas (ie highschool) anymore kind of class. You need to be prepared in precalc, and if you are not, you will get tons of help to catch up. He goes really slowly to make sure everyone keeps up, and explains things to death -- you may get bored, but you will learn. Great professor overall. Gives extra credit too.
Worst teacher I have ever experienced at UNC. Avoid taking a class with him at all cost. The class I am taking now was supposed to be easy, but he has made it 1000 times harder than it needs to be.
This class isa mix of Algebra 2 and applied Calc 1. That being said, Gabor overcomplicates the material to an extreme. He's not the fairest, and his extra credit system is super arbitrary, but he is pretty knowledgeable and makes sure that you understand why formulas are the way they are. Not a great prof, but might be best for STOR 113
Hands down the worst class I've taken at Carolina. My biggest complaint about Gabor is that he doesn't give partial credit on exams, which earned me a terrible grade in a class that was supposed to be a refresher. Besides that, he is kind of a jerk to students, and is pretty arrogant. He will call on you in class if he thinks you're not listening.
Gabor is an extremely tough grader, and his tests don't have many questions so making a minor mistake on a single question is the difference between an 100 and an 80. He has a thick accent and is not very charismatic, seems very detached from the needs of his students, sometimes treating us like were idiots and sometimes like graduate students
He is quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. This isn't because the material isn't made clear by him as he does a very good job of explaining concepts. He is the worst teacher ever because he simply doesn't understand basic grading. He takes off points to a magnitude that is nowhere close to proportionate to the mistake one made.
Gabor has a very thick accent and you can't understand a lot of what he says. Be prepared to teach yourself most, if not all, of the curriculum. He will not explain questions one-on-one in class since "you'll forget it before the exam." He grades right questions wrong and vice versa. Avoid his class at all costs. Horrible professor.
Absolute worst teacher I've had at Carolina thus far. He graded homework and tests based on if it was done using his method, not on correctness. He was also not great at answering questions or understanding what students were asking. 100% would not recommend Gabor. But if you do choose to take his class don't forget about Khan Academy. Great tool.
The material he teaches is tough, and his poor teaching only makes it more difficult and complicated. The textbook did a far better job at helping me understand the material we were covering. He assigns lots of homework, varies widely in how tough he grades, does little to help you prepare for exams, and is a pretty cold person. Avoid if you can.
Gabor didn't seem too bad at first, but things got progressively worse as the semester progressed. He wastes a lot of class time, and doesn't do a good job explaining things. Tests are 85% of your grade, so you have to do well on them. His tests are short, and he always throws in a poorly worded problem that no one knows how to do.
Heavy accent. Bad lecturer.
Not a good professor at all. Exams are not tough whatsoever but if you use a different method to solve a problem without using his preferable way of solving it, he will mark your answers wrong. Does not explain things well. Very rude when you go to his office hours and he does not care whether you learn the material or not. AVOID his class.
Quite possibly the worst professor I have had in my life. Wastes time in class, does a poor job explaining concepts, long homeworks that are graded very harshly with little to no partial credit, and he is very cold. His tests are terrible because they are short and full of random problems that were not covered in class. Avoid him at all costs!!!
Gabor is the worst professor I've ever had. He is rude to students and is inept at answering questions. He is unable to explain even the simplest of concepts well and uses an arbitrary extra credit coupon system. A real jerk, make sure to do his way of calculus or you're screwed. If you haven't taken Calc before, you need an outside tutor.
A good teacher, but a tough grader. Went into extreme details in explaining derivative, percentages, and precalculus. He learned everyone's name in a month, which was pretty impressive.
A good professor, who really cares that students actually learn. Get ready to brush up on precalc! He gives no calculator parts on every exam. He wants you to think, not just memorize formulas, which may not be to everyone's taste.
Gabor can be a picky grader, and sometimes he goes so slowly he will put you to sleep. He wants to explain everything step by step. But he is basically a good professor, who is helpful in office hours, and cares that students learn. Make sure to brush up on precalc, because he takes it seriously.
Listen to me, save yourself now and do not take this class with Gabor. Although he does seem to care about his students, he gives three midterms that are roughy 7 free response questions each with little to no partial credit. The home works are easy and the practice exams he gives are simple but neither resemble any of the questions on the exams.
Take a discrete math and/or an algorithms class before this class, then it's not so bad (still a lot of homework)
I really liked Gabor and his teaching style worked for me. Even though this class is in the stats department, it is 100% calculus. While this subject can be hard, I think that as long as you do the homework and go over his notes, getting an A is doable.
Gabor makes you print out the notes he makes every class and then makes you take notes on his notes. His homework is graded harshly and his teaching style is extremely confusing. If you have an A the whole year and do poorly on one test, it's pretty much over for you.
I made an account just to roast this man. He has no empathy whatsoever, cannot teach, feels challenged by his students and he also sucks. Do not take this class with him. The material is not hard but he sucks.
Professor Pataki is a great professor. He is very clear about how to solve problems and definitely shows you step by step. As someone who has never taken a calculus class before he really makes sure to outline it for you. Quizzes are usually pretty easy and homework can be challenging. Overall great class!
Prof. Pataki is so underrated. He's definitely a bit monotone but he is absolutely hilarious if you pay attention to what he says. As a lecturer, his class is pretty basic stuff but he leaves no one behind and makes 110% sure that everyone is clear on what he is doing. Lengthy but really easy homework, extremely easy quizzes. Very caring and nice!
Pataki really takes his time to go through each concept, which can be frustrating/boring, but helpful in the long-run. If you didn't take calc in high school, then I would def recommend this class. Also, he gives a lot of extra credit at the end of the sem.
Dr Pataki is an AMAZING professor. I didn't want to take his class at first because of his poor reviews on here but don't let that fool you! He teaches comprehensively so that EVERYBODY understands and he just really wants you to learn and feel confident with the material. His class isn't too hard and he's very willing to help. TAKE THIS CLASS!
This semester Professor Pataki was well liked and excellent at teaching. I was so nervous based off the reviews but they couldn't be farther from the truth. Very kind person and went slowly to make sure that everyone in the class understood before he moved on to the next topic. Tons of extra credit as well!
Professor Pataki was a great professor. I did not take AP calc in high school and math is not my strongest subject. However, I did really well in this course. I recommend taking him for credit. He is caring and takes time to teach concepts from the beginning. He provides great resources and the tests are just like the study material. 10/10!!!!
Coming from someone who did Calculus in high school, I think he makes lots of things way to complicated. Nothing against his nationality, but his accent is so heavy that lectures are really difficult and sometimes it can be a struggle for in-person communication. Confusing lectures just make the class really difficult.
He's super sweet and wants to make sure every student can understand the material, so he goes a little slow at times. Exam questions are straight off the homework which is nice. Very solid choice for 113, this was an easy A for me and I and terrible at math
Professor Pataki is an amazing choice. He makes an effort to ensure that all students are able to keep up with the material, which means he may be slow for some but for me it's been a nice change of pace. Quite a bit of homework, but it's helpful. Grading is straightforward, as are exam questions. Very nice professor who cares about his students!
I haven't shown up to synchronous lectures much because honestly I've just been sad, but Professor Pataki has been such an uplifting professor this semester. His emails are so nice and caring, and from what I've heard from friends he's been really accommodating with students who are struggling. It's so nice knowing our professor cares about us
Professor Pataki was very kind during the difficult Fall 2020 Semester. At the end of the day, he did just about everything he could to make his class as manageable as possible in the online format. He was very nice and kind to his students, and he seems like he genuinely cares if we do well. Didn't do as well as I would've liked, but he was great.
A sweet, sweet man.
His lectures were always clear and if it wasn't he was always open to questions. He really wants people to understand the material.
Super nice and makes sure to ask for student feedback in lectures. The tests were pretty similar to the homework which was nice. He had to leave halfway through the semester, and the transition without him was felt amongst all of the students. Overall, an easy A!
Professor Pataki is an amazing teacher, he spends time fully explaining concepts so that everyone in the class understands the material. The way he does partial grading is also super helpful and saved my ass many times. If math isn't your strong suit, Pataki is a great professor for you!
If possible, avoid taking one of Dr. Pataki's courses. He is kind and can be funny at times, but his class is insufferable. Even a 50-minute lecture feels like hours when he lectures on abstract material the entire time with very few examples. The entire course is extremely unorganized and tedious. No respect is given to you and your free time.
I have no idea what the person below me is saying. Pataki is excellent at explaining the theory and helpful in OH. The course material isn't very difficult and the homework is great for understanding the uses of the topic and studying. Pataki seems to really care about students. I would say the course is like MATH 347 part 2 but much simpler.
If you don't have time to take care of two homework for the same class in one week, don't choose his class! He doesn't know when to stop during his lecture. So you won't be able to find out what he's talking about until you face the homework. Also, he is the kind who will have homework due on the very last day of class.
While there was a lot of homework, I think the people who rate him poorly just didn't get a good grade. He's quick to fix mistakes, a good lecturer, and doesn't write super hard exams (the final was a little harder than the midterms, but the midterms had mid 80 / low 90 averages). I really liked his personality and teaching style.
Dr Pataki does not care about how well you understand class material. He is extremely rude and when grading tests takes an abnormal amount of points away for seemingly small mistakes. Example: I got a negative number for my answer when it was supposed to be positive, I lost 2 letter grades for that mistake alone. Other students did not lose as much
Dr. Pataki was an excellent lecturer, he made complicated concepts look easy. He explained everything well, often stopped during lecture if anyone needed clarification. He was kind and accommodated students in need with extending deadlines. He gave a good amount of hw, but it was well designed and helpful to learn the material.
The best professor I had at UNC! Super clear lectures, kind and caring, and helpful in office hours. He constantly asked for student feedback in lectures, and clarified things if people were lost. Course material was very interesting and useful. The programming language he uses takes some getting used to.
Dr. Pataki is the sexiest mind at UNC. His lecture goes into depth and is super clear and extremely organized. Many lazy students may have a hard time following his lectures as he requires a deep understanding of the materials, but if you paid some attention, all your efforts will pay off. Lenient grader and gives partial credit.
Though Gabor portrays a strange but friendly persona in class, I found him to be quite abrasive in office hours. It seemed as if he grew frustrated if you didn't instantaneously understand his explanation, which were not particularly clear. His grading is very harsh. On the midterms, I felt as if it was up to his grading, not what I actually knew.
Gabor is a great lecturer with a kind and quirky personality. Exams were very fair with an 85 or better average. But you must put in the work, and review stuff regularly, since there is quite a lot of hw and some are tricky. He really cares that students learn: he sent us an email every time we did well on the exams and told us that he was happy.
Gabor is a true gem. He is definitely one of the best professors in the STOR department. His exams are fair and makes sure you understand the material but does not try to trick you. He is very kind and will learn you name rather quickly if you come to office hour/participate in class. Wish he taught more upper level undergrad classes!
Easy A class but the semester was miserable. Professor Gabor's lectures are extremely boring, and the homework assignments are unnecessarily long (4-5 hours each with very repetitive problems.) He does not have a grading rubric for the exams and you can get a 10%+ total grade off for copying down the wrong number. Mandatory in-person office hour
Gave a lot of homework, along with 2 midterms and 4 quizzes. All of them are fairly easy. Boring lectures, possible to learn from notes instead of attendance. Used AMPL software for solving LP. Class could have been way harder, so I appreciate him going easy on us.
Some of Gabor's jokes made me groan and some of his hw turned my brain into mush. But I learned an awful lot. He is nice and helpful in OH but he surely makes you work for your grade. I cannot imagine what the person below me had against him, other than the grade they got.
One of the better professors in the STOR department, did tons of examples which made studying for exams easy. There is always homework, but usually not that difficult if you went to class and doing so much homework builds in studying. He has a particular style of teaching and applies the socratic method for hw help, but he wants students to learn.
Don't take Pataki; HWs are so tedious and long, and I still get BIG deductions on them despite my clear understanding. Lectures are so boring, and I failed the first midterm, partially due to me understudying, having taken calc, but MOSTLY his grading and lack of care for his students. Class is so much harder than it should be. Quizzes are easy.
Pataki does genuinely care about his students and always asks for feedback on tests, quizzes, and lectures. That being said, even with having calc experience, the homeworks are graded very harshly for no reason and the tests/quizzes having so few questions makes it hard to get an A
In his class, you may have to teach yourself how to do some things if you space out in lecture, and it can be challenging to figure out. I found tests and midterms to be easy if you study. You do have to be very precise on homework and exams. My one qualm is that I don't know what my grade is. I estimate I'll get roughly a B.
Please never take him! He is insulting when I genuinely want help and essentially calls me stupid whenever I have a question. Study guides are not like exams; exams are like 3-4 questions, so you can fail if you miss one part. He has a heavy accent and gives lots of homework that are graded harshly. Does not give any extra credit. Just do not take.
Dr. Pataki gives a lot of hw, but then makes the exams exactly like the hw. Midterms were basically 3 hw questions, and midterm scores were in the 80-90 % range. So if you study, you will do well.
He is not a good teacher, he scribbles on the board and when you have questions he is super demeaning. Many students just went to the TA to learn everything. the homeworks were super hard and took multiple hours but the midterms and quizes were easy.
I think prof. Pataki means well, but when asking questions he almost makes you seem dumb for asking. Exams & quizzes are fairly easy. 1 HW assignment a week that's graded very harshly, takes 2hrs MINIMUM and could be on the previous week's lectures. Just walks in and starts writing on chalk board. Overall not a fan of his lectures/teaching style.
He is not a good teacher. He expects you to follow along scribbled notes that are uncomprehensible because he deosn't providew context or even explain what hes doing. Good luck learning everything he assigns throiugh the TA or online.
This professor is not a good teacher. This being said, I have never taken calc before and did fine in the class. There is tons of homework that is graded very harshly. As long as you understand how to do the homework you will be fine. I would definitely recommend this class over the other options for business pre reqs.
Pataki explained all material very well, and he regularly asked for student feedback in each lecture. He really cares that students learn, but has a habit of answering a question with another question. He pestered us a lot abt catching up on algebra, which sometimes got annoying.
Goes at an extremely slow pace in class and simpifies things so much that it actually overcomplicates simple concepts. The HW is way harder than the stuff taught in class but the quizzes and exams only consist of the main easier concepts. TAs knit pick the crap out of HW. Honestly worth self studying bc Pataki moves at a snails pace.
Wow, this class was a bore. He is by far the worst professor I've had at UNC yet. It's easy, but he does not understand students or how to teach them. Goodluck.
Gabor was a good math teacher. He simplifies things down to the max and does lots of practice problems. While he sometimes make things confusing, all quiz and test are just homework questions so not hard. One homework assignment per week so not bad. If you understand the homework you'll do good. Very strict grader. Not time consuming.
professor Gabor goes veeeeeryyy slowly, he has to, so that everyone cam follow. So it may be boring for some. He is very open to meeting students on zoom and really cares that students learn. Exams are just like the hw, so redo all hw, and you will do well. From what I hear, this is the best option for B school calc prereq.
Professor Pataki gives way too much homework and it's all graded on accuracy. Homework will take you minimum 3 hours each assignment but there's only one a week. Both midterms were relatively easy and exactly like the homework. Final was a good amount harder. Lectures are difficult to follow as he's bad at explaining and often makes you feel stupid
I think the people who gave him a poor score are fresh out of high school. I am a sophomore, so better used to university courses and was never good at math, but still got an A. What you need to do well in this class is not AP calc, but algebra. He does give a lot of hw, but this course will prepare you well for the B school.
Pataki is an OK teacher at best. He sometimes complicates things more than they should but if you put in the work you'll be fine. Go to OH to check over HW's (which take a while). I found that the TA's help way more than him. The quizzes and tests are easy but the final was harder. Go to class, go to OH, do the hw, and study and you'll be fine.
Very rude towards students and only cares about his top students. He has a heavy accent and can be difficult to understand his accent and handwriting. There is lots of homework and takes off lots of points for mistakes, even if not clarified what to do he just expects you to know. I would not recommend him and would suggest you take Calc before him
The class is difficult, but if you truly put in a lot of effort, you can get an A. Weekly HW can take a while so don't wait till last minute to do it. It is also graded very heavily. If you mess up on one exam, you are kinda screwed so be sure to prepare a lot in advance. The exams are very similar to the HW, so just practice the HW. Good luck
Gabor is a terrible professor. He is hard to understand because of his accent and his handwriting is also hard to understand. He doesn't give leeway for mistakes on exams and homework is extremely long and grades every aspect of it. Do not take him.
It's obvious that Pataki is a super smart person, but I feel like he teaches the course in only a way that he understands. He does care about his students but his grading is strict and its sometimes hard to understand what he is saying in class. He also changed our grading scale with a couple weeks left in the semester and barely uses Canvas.
A genius instructor who comes across as slightly abrasive some of the time. He explained things very clearly and was always available before, during, and after OH. He really cares that students learn, though his passion is also reflected in the amount of hw he gives :)
Gabor is demeaning to students who ask questions. He uses the chalkboard exclusively and grades homework harshly. Hard to follow his accent.
One of the worst professors I've ever had.
I've been in this guy's class for about a month now, and I have probably spent more time doing his HW than all my other classes combined, and no, I am not exaggerating. The HWs get progressively more difficult as you work through them and are insolvable with the techniques he actually teaches in class.
Professor is mind numbingly boring. Homeworks take longer than your lifetime and somehow get progressively longer each week. Class is a real grind and pretty miserable.
Go to office hours and ask questions in class. Professor Pataki likes to answer them and will take as much time as needed to make sure you understand even if he seems intimidating.
Very straightforward professor. His notes are pretty helpful if you don't attend class. HWs are extremely long but not hard at all. The class itself is not hard, you just got to do the HWs that's it. The midterms seem hard but it's all questions that he has asked before either in HW or quizzes. Nice that he drops solutions though.
I strongly recommend avoiding this professor if possible. While the course content itself is manageable, his teaching style makes it unnecessarily difficult. He consistently comes off as condescending and dismissive toward students. Even when students ask genuine questions, his tone often feels rude or belittling.
The course teaches you very useful skills. Rather than teaching flashy stuff, prof. Pataki goes into the math of optimization, and uses a language to solve big problems. Simplex was kinda boring, but the many problem sessions were super interesting.
Professor Gabor takes some getting used to, as he can come across as grumpy some of the time. But he explained the course material very well, and was super helpful in OH. He really wants you to learn. Exams were just like the hw, so if you study, you will do well.
Somewhat scary guy. Gives pretty straightforward and easy tests but is a harsh grader. He will ding you a couple percent for the smallest mistakes but pretty easy to do well. Tests are very similar to homeworks
Very interactive lectures, very willing to answer questions and help. In some lectures students talked more than he did. Lots of hw, but not too difficult, and they will prepare you well for the exams and quizzes.
Course content isn't super difficult but Gabor isn't great at explaining concepts and teaches outdated methods. He grades leniently compared to other courses/professors in the STOR department and will ask students for feedback during lecture, which is helpful. Weekly homeworks are time consuming but prepare students well for exams.
Boring lectures. Some of the methods he teaches are outdated/have simpler alternatives. The content is easy, especially if you've taken 305. The homework doesn't take that long, not sure why people are complaining. The exams are VERY straightforward. You can skip class and still get a good grade, just read his notes.
Great professor, fair exams, hardass grading.
Go to class...don't assume you will pass this because you've taken calculus before. Just like study and find someone to do the homework with because running it through ChatGPT it'll be wrong...pretty boring lectures and I was always just waiting for the class to end but I guess it was pretty solid.
He's very condescending when you ask questions and will make you feel stupid for not understanding. I would recommend going to TA office hours instead. However, exams are similar to homework, but are graded very harshly. I lost all motivation for statistics because of the professor and this course.
Cannot imagine what this person had against professor Gabor. His passion was infectious, he held engaging lectures, and gave very fair exams. Course material was super interesting and made me understand what linear algebra is actually good for. People say that anyone getting a letter from him to grad school gets in!
Don't understand where negative reviews come from. Dr. Pataki is caring and patient, willing to put tons of time into teaching, whether in lecture or in office hour. His lectures, though can be clearer for some concepts, is well prepared and align well w hw and exams. Exams are graded harshly, but you will do well if you read questions carefully.
