His class is very hard, he is not helpful at all. He is rude and has a huge ego.
I don't really like this guy. Would not recomend you take him. He is a hypocrite and thinks that he is always right. I do not understand why any college would hire this guy.
This guy has no idea how to write a test. misspellings throughout all of his online exams. most of the time the questions don't even make any sense. it was all absolutely ridiculous. learned nothing and barely passed. I had the book and did the reading. BTW he words his online exam questions so that they are completely unGoogleable. AVOID AVOID!!!
Horrible teacher. I took this course online. He doesnt even know how to run a course on etudes he makes things way to complicated. The quiz questions are very tricky. he always asks if somebody has a question, but if you ask him a question he will never reply to your message. He grades the assignments after like a month your submission. Stay away
Horrible. Makes the online course way too complicated and acts as if every student is a history major . The majority of the students that signed up dropped the class (no joke). Just avoid.
This professor is special, the syllabus is not clear. I took this class online and the testsquizzes has nothing to do with the readings. Google is useless as well. This professor is unwilling to help you if your have questions, he replies with insults and rude comments. AVIOD THIS TEACHER YOU WILL BE WASTING A SEMESTER.
Worst teacher I have ever taken at LACC. He changes his syllabus during the semester and won't tell you about it. His instructions are never clear. He never tells you how long your paper should be, so you are left guessing. Never gives extra credit. Enjoys seeing student do badly and is joyful if students withdraw - it is a badge of honor for him.
Dr. Selassie is the best professor at LACC, hands down. He encourages everyone to work hard and take advantage of their time as a college student. Every first year student should be required to take his class to prepare for university level coursework. Everyone that finishes the semester acquires the tools to graduate and obtain their degree.
Awful professor. Extremely biased. He believes only his way of seeing things is right. Closed minded. I don't suggest him.
If you take him online get ready to fail. He doesn't have real assignments, just read and then a test. He doesn't answer any of your questions and never replies. His test answers are extremely ambiguous. I do not recommend at all
A lot of reading. No lectures. Tests irrelevant to reading material. Extra credit: 30 page paper to make up for one missed/failed assignment. Be ready to fail.
Best Professor at LACC. Extremely knowledgable. If you want to transfer to a good University take his course. He will help you with your essays and career goals.
Straightforward. Readings each week. Take exam. Everything is provided for you. Well organized.
Totally cool. Awesome. Makes you think about things.
This professor is NOT the best professor at the college. He is difficult to contact. He complains that he is teaching 7 courses and cannot fully concentrate, not my problem. Gave my class the wrong syllabus 3 times. His grading is unclear. He spent 2 class days teaching us on how to NOT read books. Total waste of time. Do not take!!!
Totally cool dude. Taking his history course. He made it so easy to pass. You have to come to class though. He takes roll almost everyday. But its worth it. He puts it down the right way. I highly recommend him if you are looking for the real stuff when it comes to history. Recommend.
be prepared to get ignored. this professor doesn't care about his students. never replied to any of my emails. please avoid this guy.
it is like he does everything he can to give the class a hard time. Very incompetent and does definitely not know the difference between a reflection paper and an argumentative essay. unfortunately, I wasted my semester and he messed up my GPA with the D he gave me. it went all the way down , from 4.5 ...
Just don't take his class for your own sake.
Please do not take his online history class! It's too complicated! I repeat! DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE HISTORY CLASS. I am a 4.0 student but I will receive a B because of this man. I study so hard for all my tests but his quizzes are too hard... Plus, he does not respond back to your comments. He did not reply at all to my for my grade changes.
Highly recommend both online and in person.
Reviews that are positive from below are clearly written by professor. Experienced taking his class and all students have complained about coursework. 95% of students dropped his class. Look at the writing style, very similar to each other. Do not trust those reviews on the bottom.
Those reviews on the bottom? No. Do not trust I took his class and 100% no accurate. Everyone has complained that he does not respond to comments which is true. Please do not take his class! His tests are nonsense! Those reviews on bottom are liars!
Highly recommend
Okay, I noticed there are a lot of mixed reviews. What I can add to this is that his online course is definitely unfair(maybe different for campus class). No lectures w/ a very lame study guide that's not specific. There are only texts he provides that is a considerable amount of reading. His quizzes are vague and confusing.
Assignments aren't clear. Some readings are in wrong order. and has strict grading criteria. If you expect a regular history class don't take this is a critical thinking class to write about a topic you pick on the reading. Then add personal and researched information. He does not want a summary or an opinion essay. Has to be in correct MLA Format.
This Professor should be History! complete waste of a person's life! Don't take any classes from this person!
When he lectures I get disturbed. Why do this school allow this professor to continue. He clearly do not know what lectures about. I dropped his class and changed my major! This professor made me hate History!
What can I say? I regret taking this professor. If you want to continue to well in life don't take W Gabriel Selassie I classes. I wake up with nightmares.
You could see this professor is not respected by students. Most teachers at Los Angeles City College are confused little can't teach at unIversity level RE rejects. .
I'm taki g online class. But when I send an e- mail, he never answer without reason always. Also he doesn't like give a good grade to his students. I'm 3.8 GPA student, but he broking my GPA now. The problem is I don't know why he giving me a bad grade. I did everything; homework and essays. I really need to talk to him, but he never answer.
I decided to take history online and well it was not so great with this professor. I had a classmate warn me about his hard grading but I did not listen. He is such a hard grader I decided to drop the class it was not worth a fail. He was good at answering emails but I just do not recommend at all. You will need to read ALOT.
Do not take this teacher. Negative true Positive Professor. HE even talked about the positive reviews ' Hint Hint
The reviews that sound even remotely positive are 100% false. I would avoid at all cost, this class is supposed to be a 3 unit course translating to being 6 hours spent a week on this course, however, he gives work as if it's your only class and expects countless hours on something that shouldn't be so hard.
No way! This class is a big joke and like The teacher W Gabriel, what ever his name. Why should I trust someone with that name anyway. Do not take this class.
Does not answer emails. Never in office. Beware!!!!!
I didn't learn anything!
No. STAY AWAY! PLEASE STAY AWAY! RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. DON'T LOOK BACK! RUN
MY first year in college and my first bad college teacher Gabriel Selassie. He is a bad explainer and has crazy lectures. My college experience other than this History class is great.
I took his class in the fall. All I have to say it was the hardest thing I've ever done. Happy to be out of this class.
Currently enrolled online class. Horrible. I want to drop but my GPA will suffer.
I took his class awhile back. Reading is given, I didn't have a problem with that. My issue was the essays & the way he graded it. Yes, you pick out what topic you want to talk about. He's wants you to analyze the topic. You start to wonder if he knows what the difference between an analysis & summary is after your essay has been graded. AVOID.
Professor Selassie does not care about students. He is really really tough grader and you do not know why your grade is so low He ignores the email If you can't fit into his level of education and understanding, he won't give you any grade. DONT TAKE HIM. AVOID PLEASE unless you want a big stress in your life.
Please read my review and take it seriously. When you write your essay or discussion and your grammar is not PERFECT than he gives 0. ME and 3 more friends earn 0 on the essay and discussion. Disrespectful comment such as There is nothing to grade, Your English is not a college level Go back and learn.I really think he could said something better.
Do not take him. Dude does not know what analysis writing is and will tell you your essay is a summary when it really wasn't. PhD?? You have got to be kidding me. I think students like him because he just socially outgoing. Don't be so shallow guys! He is truly a disservice to higher education. Choose wisely.
He doesn't give the best feedback on how to improve and he doesn't return emails. He doesn't strike me as someone who is invested in his students.
At all cost avoid this professor, my fellow classmates were struggling to be in this class because the teacher expected a lot & he wasn't helping a lot. He was really rude to those who needed help & would say rude things. His feedback on assignments does not help at all. He can't even give points for trying & grading criteria is awful.
JUST DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! LOOK AT THE REVIEWS THEY ARE ALL RIGHT!
Look at the other reviews. Do not take any classes from this Professor. He doesn't offer much help, won't reply to emails or questions, grading criteria is confusing, goals of the class unclear, but he will blame you for taking the class and suggest you're just lazy or a bad student if you ask for help or point out any problems.
I decided to drop his class due to the fact I wasn't learning anything. He provides the readings, but they were difficult to follow. The readings went over concepts like immigration and revolution without going into specific historical details. His test questions were an absolute joke. Re-taking class during summer with a different professor. Run!
How is this guy a professor? He speaks highly of correct grammar but uses "aint" in his canvas. Much contradiction for a professor who strictly grades essay by the book, don't you think so?
hardest class i've ever taken he made us write a minimum of 1000 word essay once a week, thought history was going to be easy i was wrong.
Horrible teacher! His grammar is middle school level at best. I believe he his writing his own reviews because they sound an awful lot alike, odd don't you think. The fact of the matter is he's rude, argumentative, and dismissive. I'd never recieved a D On a paper til I took his class. Run far away from this class, you've been warned.
Test questions made ZERO sense. I wrote an essay each week but felt like I was not learning much about history. Yourre graded on just essays and exams. He gives you the reading mayerial as PDFs which consists of several books. Hard to follow. I dropped his class. Worst professor at LACC.
terrible teacher. Stay far away. For your own sake.
Good class if you do the work.
Feel free to take this class if you want to pull your hair out. His grammatical prowess makes you question his academic achievements. It is genuinely so bad that it can often make taking his tests problematic. He's quick to attack the student. That says enough. I got an A in class, so you can't call me a "slacker" as you so often do.
The test will be too broad to answer correctly. He will shame on students when they got low scores and shame that student didn't study enough. It was SO DISCOURAGING and you will walk out of this class with lower self-esteem. Don't do that to yourself. Please take another professor. I beg you.
PROF SELASSIE is really cool. I can see why students complain. If I didn't do the work Id be angry as well. He gives you access to book, lecture notes, and quiz guide. Many students didn't study. He only has one paper, and a few quizzes. Lectures are interesting.
There must be two Selassies cause the class was not hard. For example, he gives you the book. All the exams come straight from it. The readings are short and easy. He is also really super easy going and very helpful especially for those of is transferring. He told us upfront we have to study so why complain? Bad student? Most likely.
This class does require effort. But its not anything you cannot do. The lectures are amazing and Professor Selassie is really passionate about his subject. He really cares about his students and it shows. People that have trouble in his classes are usually students that try to do as minimal as possible or don't have good intentions. Recommended
One of the best at LACC. I just didn't like the group work. He pushes his students to care and his lectures are amazing. Really good class.
He is a good professor I am not going to lie but as I stated in my rating, you need to work hard for this class. He maybe teaching as an online professor at an County College but he gives his work to his students as if we are in a four year college instead. I wish he did not make us do Chicago Manual style papers. Also his quiz questions are hard.
Run. A nightmare. Questions on quiz that aren't in the reading, no lectures, misleading syllabus, non ADA compliant textbook (just a PDF with pictures of a book), he shames and intimidates students for failing, saying they are "lazy." The real problem is his poor teaching. Any good reviews here are written by Selassie himself.
The topics & discussions were engaging and interesting. You MUST read all materials he tells you to read or you will not pass. We went into quizzes or tests not knowing exactly what we needed to study for. & He looks for specific answers so even if you're kinda right, you'll get a 0. Doesn't always follow syllabus, he forgets what is assigned.
I took his online class assuming that it was gonna be an easy A but it was far from easy. He assigns readings every week and each chapter is extremely long and tedious but it's absolutely necessary to read it to do well in quizzes. He's very particular about grading essays. Got a B but would've gotten A if I didn't mess up on the last essay.
The lectures are interesting, but the grading system is so confusing that you never know your standing probably until you see your final grade. Bad time management. Bad organization. Challenging class. Be ready for lot of questions during the lectures. I think he makes you think critically and there are no easy answers. Don't complain, is college
The worst teacher Ive ever had in my 22 years of living. Stop hiring teachers like him, LACC.
Everybody that took this class and is upset that their grades is not good i guarantee gave little to no effort just because this is an online class. I learned a bunch, I got an A, I learned Chicago Format, Professor is very serious about teaching and lazy students NEED NOT ADD HIM! AGAIN, IF YOU'RE LAZY DO NOT ADD HIM. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ADD HIM.
Although this is a history class ¬ a speech class, the teacher will try to fail you if you don't talk EVERY class. His grammar and spelling is concerning for a professor at college. Assignment instructions are very vague. He will count off points for not following a requirement that wasn't mentioned in the instructions at all. Worst teacher

I have taken his class during the fall of 2019, I work so hard in his assignments. I believe I should get some credit for this, but no he give me a D, . I always ask him lot qustion about anything I need help with. Even though I wasn't receiving good grades in my quizzes but I ask him lots of questions, and I did everything in his satisfactory way.
Ridiculously overzealous about his assignments. Very condescending in his comments regarding work instead of being constructive. Please only take this class if you have nothing else to worry about in life because that is the amount of dedication he wants from the student.
His class is really tough. A lot of readings and papers to write. He expects a lot more from you, but he gives useful feedbacks. At the first few weeks in his class, I thought I would fail since there was a lot of work to do. However, I passed the class with a B unexpectedly. I would say as soon as you complete all the work, you will be fine!
Intense curricula about America's origins of conquistadors and chattel slavery. Be prepared to have discussions where oppressive language is allowed. If you are a minority or triggered by heavy topics this course may not be for you. Grading processes aren't clear and you can receive failing grades without any feedback; despite full participation.
3 days into the zoom class and he dropped me for no reason. I messaged him to see if it was an error that same day at 8am and its now been a week and he has not responded my email. Its unprofessional not to respond to someone's email and even more when you drop them for no reason. Will not take him again and will advice friends not to either
I took this professor on Fall 2020. This professor didn't answer my emails and I accidentally took this professor because the school transferred me to him. I don't recommend this professor to anyone. After reading the ratings, he has horrible reviews, but it was too late. And I took his class anyway but it was not a good choice.
Very easy class to do online, do well on quizzes and tests and you'll get an A.
WORST professor I've ever taken. He makes you read a long a** book for absolutely no reason because the exams are not related to what you read. NOT a single question was about the book. Like WTF. Please Please save yourself. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He takes forever to answer your emails, and when he does it is with an attitude.
I have never been so frustrated by a professor in my years at CC. He does not care about you or your excuses. I believe he said he will only excuse late work if someone in your family dies or if you have surgery. The work is fine if you put in the work but damn… I thought I was gonna get an A. If you can find another professor… TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
I added this course summer 2025, in order to be in the class you have to pass the syllabus test. He stated that you had to get a 70 percent. I listened to both videos that were required. I'm positive I got the answers correct. I wake up to start my readings and I was dropped. This sucks! However, I was able to add a different history class.
It would help if the exams and quizzes had something to do with the actual history and the textbooks. Exams/quizzes seemed more to be based upon his very boring lectures and opinions of history, itself. Have fun slogging through his gas bagging about himself. I'm guessing this could be why he describes himself online as a "psychonaut".
Avoid Selassie at all costs!! Fulfill HIST requirements elsewhere!! His quizzes are unrelated to the texts and your answers in essays must match his personal views. He accuses struggling students of laziness instead of addressing his poor teaching. Positive reviews here seem written by him, since they repeat that students just “don't want to work.”
He insisted on contacting him, yet he barely responds. Bad attitude and condescending. The quizzes barely give context, and getting clarification is hard. Lots of misspellings, makes understanding the material even harder. Even if it's a late-starting class, there should be some form of extra credit to help balance these challenges. Avoid him!
Good class. Radical lectures. Book was required but it was easy reading. Nice man.
It's end of semester. I have taken two courses from Prof Gabriel. You watch youtube lecture videos. They are really good. And what one person is saying that the videos are not related is a lie. Quizzes are straight from the book. The assignments are easy, just dont miss due dates. He wont let you make them up. Good quality class. Easy to pass.
Easy to pass. The real real is you watch intersting lectures. Then you take an exam whose quesions come from the lectures and the books or readings. The readings and book are easy to read so I dont know why anyone complains. Yes, you do have to take a orientation quiz. You watch a orientation video and then have to score 70 (C) to stay in class.
The class is well organized on Canvas. Straightforward instructions. You take about 3 quizzes with study guides and write two short essays and one discussion. That's it. He is a hard grader but all you have to do is follow the easy rubric which tells you exactly what to do. I think many students are disgruntled because they are no good. Easy peasy.
Good professor. I enjoyed his lectures as everyone else is saying. Not a lot of work but if you try to turn in late work he won't accept it. Caring person who really wants his students to succeed. Highly recommend.
Just finished a class with Dr Gabriel. Moderately easy if you do the work. Study guides are easy. Dont cheat and use AI. He busted a few students.
Im not gonna lie. I thought the class was harder than most of the reviews. But I didn't put that much effort into the class. Like others said it was well organized. Selassie has tons of degrees including architecture and engineering and PhD. He tells us not to brag but what can be accomplished. Exams have study guides to help.
Professor Selassie is knowledgeable, but can be rigid in his grading. The course workload is manageable, but you won't get him to accept mediocre work. The course is all lecture based with a discussion and a few exams. Exams were easy as others stated. Discussion was a bit tricky but exams, lectures and quizzes were all really informative. Take!
I took his short term online class. A whole semester in 5 weeks. It was a lot of work. I think people think that a short term class means less work. Its not. I got a B but if I had taken a regular class I might have gotten an A. Caring professor that wants you to succeed.
