I love this professor! She is so nice and helpful!!!! I wish she were teaching chem 104 so I can take her class in the fall!
WONDERFUL person!!! best of hunter!!!...makes chemistry easy... often gives hw and quizes which help you out in the long run but you have to actually do them...answers all of your questions and teaches you short cuts to solving problems ...powerpoint lectures are easy to understand...TAKE HER CLASS if CHem is not your specialty
can barely understand her English. gives a lot of homework and rushes through her lectures. she doesnt allow make-ups on the final! NO MATTER WHAT! which is why i failed the class =)
Gabriela was a pleasant surprise. She provided ample examples for problems. Towards The end of the semester it seemed a bit squashed together however. Overall good job covering the material.I felt that she played favorites with the pets in the front row a bit, providing hints on exams should she catch a problem on their paper. That aside, recommended
She's really nice, but didn't really help me at all. Her accent is fairly thick but not completely incomprehensible. Her lectures weren't really much help either. I got a B- by reading the textbook on my own as well as watching lectures online. Tests are pretty difficult also.
The best Chemistry professor at Hunter. Her tests are very straighforward! She gives homework and you should do it b/c it's exactly what's on the exam. She takes the time to answer all the questions that students might have. She goes out of her way to help! The most helpful and wants to see her students succeed. One word AWESOME!!
She Was GREAT!!! She helped a lot! Her tests are straight forward and she never played favorites. spent as much time as she need to answer EVERY SINGLE QUESTION in the class. As long as you do the homework and pay attention in the class you will get your A.
every1 here is complaining that you cant understand her english, i dont agree at all...she is a very good teacher, and if you got lower than an A then maybe perhaps its your own fault..she is not easy, she is tough but she explains the material with so much clarity that its easy to understaand her...if u get a chance take her...she is awesome!!
Best Chemistry prof ever! This teacher wants you to learn and to succeed (how rare is that?). She is very generous with her time and is very patient. You must do homework, attend class and study her pp slides. Her exams are fair. Whatever class she is teaching, TAKE IT!!!
She is just great! I didn't even open the book! She is clear! I don't believe people who are saying that they can't understand her accent! This is juct an excuse for getting a bad grade! I did my hw, attended lactures and I got my A+!
Great! Exceptional professor, just amazing.
She's a great person, but when it comes to the teaching, I'm not fond of it. Her exams are very doable, however. Do her review exams and you'll be fine.
What a wonderful professor. Attendance is not mandatory; You would likely show up in the class anyway. Always answers your questions in an extended manner so you would know the answers. Brings up a lot of conceptual examples for problem solving. Uses PPT presentations. Even if you're not on top of the class there is a chance you end up with an A.
Professor Gabriela is amazing!Attendance isn't mandatory but you should attend every class. Her exams are okay and she really prepares you for them, if you fail it's your own fault. The best part is that she posts her lectures online so that you can print them out and follow along which makes life easier. Overall she is an amazing professor, the BE
She is the best professor i have had in chem so far, i am taking her for intro to chem and let me tell you, she made me into the chem major i am today, i am taking her for Chem 102 next semester and lets hope the majority wins that she teaches 104 in the fall i hope she does, because she makes everything easy for the students, her tests are simple!
She's an amazing teacher. Chemistry is a hard subject but she's really good at teaching it and patient enough to work with people until they get it.
amazingggggggg teacher and sweetest as well ! shes extremely helpful and shes one of the only profs ive actually talked to after the semester was over.. im taking chem 112 now with prof sweeney (also good) but i will deff be goin to her for some extra help!
Gabby was an awesome teacher! She was extemely helpful during workshops and even during tests. If you ask her for help, she will help and probably give you the answers (as has been my experience and friends' experience during tests). She doesn't assign too much homework and will give extensions if the whole class complains.
People, take this profesor! Very helpful during office hours and always replies to e-mails. You'll have to work hard, reading, formulas, etc, however, if smth is not clear, she'll take time to explain thoroughly. I'm happy I'm taking her class! Good luck!
Gabriela is the most wonderful professor I had. She is extremely helpful with homework and during the tests. She is passionate and cares about her students! If you participate and commit she will greatly appreciate it and reward it! She is one of these people that make you want to be in Hunter. She rocked my first semester in college!
she is very nice nad helpfulw..Highly recommended!!she gives practice exams before the exam which is similar to the actual exam..
Take this professor and you will not regret!!! Of course, you have to study on your own and show actual knowledge, but she will always explain everything thoroughly during her office hours. Learned a lot and very happy with Prof. Smeureanu!
Best chenistry teach you will ever take. Concepts are clear, hw is due in a week and really help you understand the material. The test are fair in that if you do the hw and pay attention you will get a hundred on the test. She is not rude and is more than willing to help you with any matter concernign chemistry and her office hours are very helpful
People! This professor deserves a medal! She teaches very well, she constantly helps whether by e-mail ( which she never fails to answer within 1-2 hours - RECORD!) or during office hours. This course was hard and intense for those with families and full-time jobs, however, she explained material thoroughly! Thank you, Gabriela, for your dedication!!
She's a pretty good professor, who will take the time out to answer all questions. She's clear for the most part, though she does have a tendency to leave errors in the online notes she posts. Her practice exams reflect 90 percent of what is on the exam. Overall, a good professor who will help you earn a good grade.
Excellent chemistry teacher. Explain things very well.
She is very clear. Just study and do the practice exams..Highly recommended.best professor!!
Smeureanu is an excellent chemistry teacher. Chem isnt everybodys favorite subject and was def not my strongest, but she made every thing very clear and easy to understand. She cares about her students and helps you if you need or ask for it. She's such a good professor, I've registered into her class next semester! I highly recommend her.
Excellent teacher
Do Not Take Her! I have no idea what all the other people on here are talking about. Extremely difficult, rushes through lectures without providing full explainations/feedback. Practice Exams are much easier than the actual test.
Pay attention in class, do the homework, do the practice exams, and, and read the textbook. Follow these instructions and you are in good shape for an A, A-, or B+. If you're a naturally smart person, an A+ is well within reach. i HATED chem in high school, but really enjoyed this class and feel so much more knowledgeable for having taken it
Just had her for Summer 1, Chem 104. Great teacher, gives plenty of quizzes/homework/workshops to help bring your grade up. Answers emails in record time. 2 Thumbs up. People that complain: Try some of the other Chem profs at Hunter. You don't know what you've got till its gone.
She's a very nice teacher. Really goes the extra mile in helping you try to understand. Gives a lot of quizzes/workshops for a boost in grade. I never liked CHEM in HS. Never really paid attention. This time, she boosted my interest but I still didn't really study so I recieved a standard grade.
i don't know why people rated her easy- she's NOT. she gives off the impression that she is nice and helpful, but once you get to know her you will realized that really she does not care. her practice exam is nothing like the real one and her tests are very hard! she gives a lot of long calculations and there is never enough time to finish.
She is a good professor. If you do the homeworks and read the book as well as do some practice problems, you will do fine. Her practice exam is not the actual test so don't rely solely on that. I would recommend taking her.
She really helpful, and teaches at a rate and level everyone understands and if you dont she will explain it until you do. There are plenty of quizzes. Homework is assigned on OWL, dont't worry she gives you plenty of time to do it. She does have those moments in which her sense of humor really show. Take her shes really awesome.
Chemistry has never really been a strong subject for me but this professor makes complex things so much clearer. I rarely do the OWL homeworks but I've received awesome grades on quizzes/tests. So if you're failing her class, it must be because you don't pay attention. You don't have to put in much effort if you just listen in class. She's awesome!
Shes very nice.Always eager to answer questions. HOWEVER, her practice tests are A LOT easier than the exams. DO NOT RELY ON HER PRACTICE EXAMS.
First, I would like to say I HATE chemistry. After taking her class I still HATE it. She's very kind, but I think I would've chosen another subject to fulfill my GER. Her practice exams are so much easier than her actual exams (I aced the practices but I flunked ALL the actuals). Take this is only--and ONLY if--you're good at chemistry!!
I'm terrible in chemistry, and she didn't help me at all. I passed the class, but solely because i pushed myself, not because she was a good teacher. She gives no incentive to keep returning to her classes. She answers questions, but when she does she makes you feel stupid. Not my favorite professor.
GREAT!!! she is really good and knows her stuff. answers questions, answers your email in seconds, nice regarding hw on owl gives extra time, practice exam are a bit helpful but not as i thought. for the actual test she changes questions around. One major flaw she doesnt take her time to give some tutoring or be available for her students for extr
Prof Smeureanu is super helpful compared to the other chem profs at Hunter. The tests are extremely difficult that really require full knowledge in order to pass. Prof is very lenient with the OWL hws too, and often extends the due date. 4 exams and one final. No curves for exams. If you aren't sure about taking this class- consider CR/NC!!
Base lecture on her slides. Give practice exams before each exam but the practice exams are much easier then the actual exams. Her exam questions are tricky. The OWL hw help me a great deal in understanding the material but can me frustating at time. She is very helpful and is willing to answer or explain any questions/ problems. Some
She was great. Study her slides and pay attention in lecture and you should be fine. She's very helpful if you need to see her during office hrs. Read exam questions carefully, , she has tricks in them.
Class usually ends early - if she finishes her ppt early then class ends early otherwise it ends at the time its suppose to. Theres a lot of quizzes - really easy compared to the exams. She curves all exams, takes the highest grade and subtract it from 100 and add that to everyones grades for their exam. review sheets add on to quiz grade.
She is a really good teacher and her tests are tricky but fair. She takes the time to answer EACH question that students ask her, which sometimes leads to her hurrying to finish the material before the test but she is really helpful. Attendance is taken through the i-clickers so its basically mandatory. Just study her slides and youll do fine.
I had no idea what she was saying sometimes, but she was helpful in the sense that she tried really hard to give us extra time to submit homework. She also tried to curve some of our grades, because class averages were so bad. She is not a bad professor, though.
overall she is a good teacher.but her actual exam and practice exam question are totally different that you never expect the similar question on the exam.actual exam is really difficult. if you are really good on chemistry, then you can do well in this class, otherwise not
Her test really aren't that hard. The practice test are similar to the regular test. She does put little tricks on the test but if you go over lecture notes you should be fine.
When it comes to the Science Departments at Hunter, Prof. Smeureanu is a GEM. She has an accent, but she is still comprehensible and EXTREMELY HELPFUL: Takes time to answer questions and answers e-mails very quickly. Her tests are fair and there are a couple tricks here and there, but if you work hard, study the slides and the book, you'll do well.
She's a very very good teacher. Takes her time to go over the work and tried her best to answer all of our questions. I found her accent to be bearable, and her class to be extremely helpful.
If you pay attention in class, do all the homework, and study for thoroughly for tests you should be fine. It is hard to pay attention in class since it's so large. But the owl homework should really help with your understanding of chemistry.
Read the textbook and you'll do fine in this class. People say that her tests are tricky but all you need to do is read the questions carefully. And when I mean carefully, I mean analyze every word written in the sentence. She gives a review before each test and the questions that come on the test are similar to those on the review sheet.
I really like this professor's teaching style. She made me understand chemistry SOOOO much better which is kind of a miracle. It's not an easy subject and I had to study a lot but she was always available to answer questions clearly. Very fair and reasonable though exams are tricky and lots of HW. I recommend the practice tests in the supplement.
This was my 2nd time taking Chem 100. The first time I never showed up and received a D. This time I went every week, made a review sheet for myself each exam and it was an easy A. Prof is very nice and will help anyway possible. She posts all notes on blackboard. Go to class, pay attention, do the online hw, and study a little before each exam = A
I don't understand how people are talking about getting A's. With every test, the class average is about 65. She rushes through her lectures, and studying for her tests is very difficult as they are very tricky and on a completely different level from everything we go over in class and her practice exams. Show up to class and do your homework.
Great professor! Calm, understanding, and helps you a lot to understand Inorganic Chemistry and to get a good grade! Highly recommended!
She is nice to her students; gives extra points based on how terrible the exam grades are and gives her students extra time to finish their assignments. Her power point slides are useful and helpful. Four exams, one final exam and use OWL for assignments which is due almost every week. Received a C-, which I could've done better!
The biggest setback of this course is the size of the class. Chemistry is not an easy subject and having to take it in an auditorium doesn't make it easier. Exam averages were always low and a lot of people end up dropping out. The homework is really helpful and she's really flexible with it.
Very helpful professor. Definitely an easy A class, only when you come to class regularly, listen carefully on lectures, do some extra work after and before the class, and practice on your own. Absolutely recommend her and her class. ******Do not ignore the Final Exam assuming its easy, it covers all four exams already taken. Do Your best on all!
Science at Hunter should be against the law; it’s always a 500+ lecture class taught by a person whose first language is never English. I loved Professor Smeureanu, she was a lovely person and very willing to help her students after the class but make sure you do the homework and study those study guides, they do help you to remember the formulas.
Class is very clear with expectations, grades are mainly based on lab. That said she is as helpful as she can be with redo labs etc. Overall she is just really nice AND good, a relative novelty in the Hunter chem dept.
Class size was ridiculous, 500+. Took over 2 wks to get test back and was not even able to review it.
Great professor. Attendance is mandatory for iClickers. Curve on the tests and final grade when class avg is low. Study her slides on BB while taking notes, do her practice questions and owl homework and you'll do great. Learn to be ACCURATE for tests (20-25Q). Questions are easy but sometimes a little tricky. Recommend! Got A+
Great teacher. Sometimes she's slow to answer questions on Blackboard but overall helpful. She likes to throw curveballs on the test but if you do the practice tests and extra chapter problems you'll know what to look out for easily. Study and you can get an A.
Do your homework and LOOK OVER THE POWER POINT SLIDES and you will get an A. She will curve if the class average is under a 70. She is beyond fair and very helpful/available to her students.
She is okay. Her exams are very hard and not like the practice nor the book; although it is similar. Go to her office hours and she will help you. Trust me she will. If you go to her with her practice exams she will explain it to you and give you the answers. Helpful and kind but makes the exams very hard. So be careful with this professor.
Great professor. The size of the lecture is the worst thing about the class. Make sure you get iclicker questions correct, keep up with the online homework and DO ALL THE PRACTICE TESTS. Her exams are difficult but not unfair, so make sure you study. Save all your exams because she often repeats exact questions from previous tests on the final.
Good at teaching but tests are very tricky. Not an easy A. You need to do work to get an A.
Excellent professor. The subject is difficult regardless but she puts up slides, practice questions, and practice exams on Bb. She will help you if needed during office hrs. I did not purchase the textbook for this class, I took notes during class, studied the slides, review questions and was able to get an A. I recommend taking her class.
It's really difficult to even imagine taking a Chemistry course in such a large course! Her tests are very tricky, and nothing like the work we do throughout the year. However, I believe she gives us the fundamentals to succeed in her class, it's just not something that you can sit back and expect to get an A.
Her class is definitely hard, but don't get discouraged. The first two exams are really hard but by then you get used to her style of teaching. You have to put in effort if you want to get a good grade in this class, there's alot of weekly homework, but you will thank yourself later if you take it seriously and use the homework as a study tool.
Had her for chem 101. There were only two tests. Not at all hard if you pay attention in class and study at least moderately before exams. She is very clear in her lessons and helpful! This class was much easier than i expected.
I LOVE HER! SHE IS SO NICE AND SHE TEACHES SO WELL. HER LECTURES ARE SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT FORWARD AND THERE ARE ONLY 2 TESTS AND THERES NO HOMEWORK. SHES REALLY GOOD AT REVIEWING MATERIAL AND SHE MAKES IT STICK IN YOUR MEMORY. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
Gabriela is such an amazing teacher, she was my favorite teacher this semester. Her exams reflect exactly what was taught in class, she's very clear and sweet. She's open minded and helps the students, she's very welcoming.
CHEM101 is fairly easy. Just study the slides before the exams and you should pass the class with a good grade. Professor Smeureanu is very clear and makes the material understandable.
Easy A… exams are really easy, class is easy everything is easy
Best professor you can take. Makes the material so seem so easy. Study the slides and will do great on the exam. Everything is fair,, if you study you will get a good grade.
She's really nice, and good at teaching. Just go to the lectures and study the slides before the exam, it's easy A, and there was only 2 tests. Just talk to her or email her if you have a question. I wish she taught 100 too
I love gabriela! Shes a sweetheart! SUPER smart, clear, and thourough when teaching chemistry, doesnt move forward until she knows the whole lecture hall gets it. NO FINAL, only two non-cumulative tests that are really decent. No homework. Dont even need a textbook all you need to know is on the slides. I wish I could take her for every chem class
She's an INCREDIBLE professor! She makes everything very easy to understand, and she actually stops the class if a student has a question. There is no homework, and it is the student's responsibility to read the lecture slides for exams and go over slides that weren't covered. But she is prompt to respond to emails.
She makes it very clear what kinds of questions will be on the exams, just study post lab & clicker questions.
Prof. Smeureanu is outstanding. She is there for her students like no other. Besides for the fact that she's an incredible teacher, her actions make it obvious that she genuinely cares for her students. Her classes are fun and enjoyable as long as you do what's required. I would sincerely recommend taking her!
I love Gabby! She is very knowledgeable, professional and made me to love chemistry, which is not the easiest subject. I took the option with using lecture videos online and iclicker section once a week. I think it's a brilliant idea to have all the lectures online when you can manage your time. Take her and won't regret. No textbook - saved money!
Honestly its a great class and its chem so you have tow work for your grade but this was a hybrid class and it was pretty clear everyone is so helpful and she as and professor did a great job with helping if you don't pass thats on you. & NO TEXTBOOK
There isn't a textbook to read, but there are chemistry videos she posts that you should watch to learn the topic and come into class to answer Clicker questions. Her tests are tricky if you don't pay attention to detail in the question and also if you don't study. She's a nice teacher and helpful, but you really need to work for your grade.
2 exams and iclicker questions. If there is a textbook required, don't buy it. Her slides are enough. Attendance is required, it's taken by iclicker. Her exams are pretty hard, but her slides are pretty straightforward. So you'll pass. She's also incredibly sweet and nice, so maybe take her.
Had Gabby for chem 102/104. Good prof, but def. have to work hard to get good grade. Got A and A + respectively for two classes, but get ready to get confused for some concepts in 104. Even after doing well, I still don't have firm grasp on some imp. concepts. PS, don't worry at all about ACS exam. It is not at all hard as most people say to be.
You get partial credit for multiple choice exam questions... who does that? The best professor does. She gives us many chances to get good grades and she explains all the iclicker questions very clearly. Best professor I've had at Hunter.
Professor Smeureanu was honestly one of the best professors I have ever had in my life. She is very clear and knowledgeable about everything she teaches in the course and if you need help with anything she offers office hours and open recitations. Overall amazing teacher!
Prof gabby is really good and understanding. She care about the students and is very helpful. She gives a lot of chances for them to pass. I would take her again.
Gabby is one of the nicest sweetest professor ever. She doesn't teach during lectures, only clicker questions, you are to learn from the videos at home yourself. I like that a lot more so i can learn at my own pace. Three exams and a final, if your final is higher than your lowest grade, it gets dropped. Highly recommend!!
First time taking a hybrid class, it was better than I expected. The clicker sessions were helpful and there are practice tests and other practice questions posted on the course site. Some of the material explained by the videos were a bit confusing but Professor Smeureanu will answer questions if you have any. Recommended.
Proffesor Smeureanu is great! She is very sweet, cares about students, and knows how to teach. She gives tough exams but you will do good if you study. Make sure you attend office hours and recitation for review!
She's pretty great and really sweet. The class is SUPER easy. You only need to glance at the slides before the exams. The iclickers make attendance mandatory, but the class isn't that long so it's not that much of a problem. Honestly, you really don't have to pay attention in class, as long as you do the iclickers and study for exams, you'll pass.
Her pwrpts were so straightforward and she really explains the topics so well. iClicker questions and the 2 tests are what count most in this class. So just pay attention and take notes. There is no final. I would def take her again whenever possible.
Shes pretty straightforward with what she wants. Only 2 exams in her class with 25 questions from Post Lab questions and lectures. Theyre pretty easy. Need to come to class for clicker points because its apart of your grade though.
Easy A class. Only 2 exams in her class with 25 questions from Post Lab questions and lectures. Theyre pretty easy. Need to come to class for clicker points because its apart of your grade though.
Chem 102 is difficult, especially at Hunter. Gabby makes it a lot easier. If you have the chance to take the smaller, active class you really should. You're not require to watch the videos, bc you actually learn in her class.
great teacher, class was very basic chemistry, just listen during lectures and review the slides she posts. grade is cumulative with lab assignments which make for an easy A. Her class is 2 tests and clicker points. She was very clear and made chem easy. Very basic class
VERY nice professor. Breaks down the material in a way that is easy to understand and tries to answer students/concerns as much as she can. Also very easy to reach outside of class. Tests are based off of the powerpoints and clicker questions so they aren't too painful. She's very clear about the grading criteria as well. Would take her again :)
She's a laid-back professor. Her lectures and exams are straight forward. Study and be sure you get all your Iclicker points.
Gabriela is a sweetheart. But I didn't find the lectures comprehensive enough. If she ran out of time during a lecture, she wouldn't pick up where she left off, you were expected to watch the videos and learn it on your own. I found the problems on homework and exams to be much more difficult than the concepts taught. Go to office hours!
The lectures were very clear and straightforward. She was very open to answering questions and made class enjoyable. It's general chemistry you're learning so it isn't that difficult, but she still made sure to explain everything thoroughly.
Her recitation class is easy. She gives second chances for iclicker questions if less than 75% of the class doesnt get the right answer. Her class only consists of a midterm and a final. Most of your grade for 101 depends on your lab grade from your lab instructor. However, Dr. S is amazing at teaching and her slides are easy to understand. Easy A.
I absolutely loved taking Chem 101 with professor Smeureanu. Her lectures were very informative and knowledgeable. She's also a great professor.
Amazing professor that made Chemistry understandable and fun at the same time. If you don't study you won't pass. Show up to lectures or you won't pass.
Very nice teacher. She is lenient on the clickers and have a great sense of humor. She also gives alot of extra credit! Definitely take her for an easy A!
Make sure to show up in classes because her class revolves around clickers and they count towards your grade. Review the slides and videos on whatever lesson in Sapling before class to ensure you get a perfect score on clickers. Average class exam grades are almost in the mid 70s. Just make sure to go to office hours for exam review when posted.
I took CHEM 104 in a flipped hybrid style. This meant we learned the material at home (through videos) and we came to class once a week for a clicker session (10-12 graded questions on the material we learned that week). Gabbi was a blast to have, the questions werent easy. But she is knowledgeable and hilarious at times! A solid choice for chem.
Dr. Smeureanu is so nice and really responsive when you reach out to her for help. But for the flipped hybrid course we took, you have to manage your time and be on top of everything or you could fall behind.
I had her for Chem101 and was in my friends class with her in Chem106 and she always gives out extra credit. Theres no way you cant pass her class and she gives the entire class an extra 10 points for doing her teacher evaluations.
Here's the thing about the flipped hybrid style of class... it requires an intense amount of self control from the students while the teacher is not actually teaching anything at all. lets be real here given a choice between Netflix and watching 20 videos of this stuff online every week what would you choose? Exactly. i'm disappointed by hunter...
okay guys i have her for lecture i have not finished this corse but whoever reads this know this. ALOT OF independent study!!! youtube and tutoring is offered in the 7th floor. but she is nice and easy to reach out to. responded to every email. but since its such a huge class (270) take her bc i bet she better than others but STUDY
GUYS IF YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO TAKE HER CLASS PLEASE DO!! She is so caring about her students, and if you ever have a problem and go to her office hours, she will make you feel so much better about your life. She tries to give the highest grade she could possibly give you. The only reason she has low ratings is probs because chem is hard lmao
It's not that chem is hard or anything but it is how they teach us everything through YouTube Videos !!! We get 2 topics a week and 10 videos per topic and sometimes the videos are not helpful at all!!! first exam about half the class failing the exam. Second exam was no better, if you have no life (studying all day) take it , otherwise NOPE
I personally hated the flipped hybrid class style. However, Gabriela was nice as a person. Exams weren't too bad (if u were caught up with the videos) and she made clickers interesting. I would never take Chem at Hunter again though because of the flipped hybrid style. 3 exams, 1 final and a lot of ec points. She is accessible and easygoing too.
Most caring professor ever.
She is a kind professor who is always trying her best to give as many EC points that she can because of the dumb flipped classroom style that Hunter forces the science classes to use. Either way , no matter what professor you have , the flipped classroom style requires you to put in the work yourself but Gabby tries her best.
The flipped course may not be for everyone, but I definitely learned more in this 1 semester than my 1 year of chem in high school. Lectures are online videos made by Dr. Donna McGregor, which can become vague & boring as the semester goes on. Regular classes are almost like an open-book Kahoot, so partner up with someone reliable. 3 tests, 1 final
Extremely nice professor, very simple grading criteria, and easy to follow lectures. A perfect course for people who have never taken a chemistry course. She gave a lot of extra credit, repeated iClicker questions multiple times in class to give people second (and third) chances. Exams were very fair and literally covered exactly what was on PP's.
Absolutely hated the flipped hybrid style class, cause of my downfall. however, you can always reach her because she is very knowledgeable and helpful. You can tell she wants to do whatever she can to help you pass!
She is an amazing Professor! I learned so much in her class. She cares about her students. She is available at any time to help in any possible way. She always answers on time. I would take her again and again. and AGAIN!
She's super sweet and really good at explaining the material. Unfortunately it's a flip course so she doesn't really get to teach. The class is basically online and you show up for the workshops tests and iclickers. however, the prof and her TAs all hold a lot of office hours so take advantage of it.
Best Professor at Hunter, I would take her again and again..
Best Chemistry Professor at Hunter College. Allows for her students to really succeed in the class because she really cares for them deeply. Her tests are usually very good and allow for multiple extra credit opportunities.
H.W is a WASTE of time. Not helpful for her exams (which are actually heavily based on iClickers + previous exams!). Hated the hybrid style. Videos are long and boring. Make friends and look at YouTube videos! She does give lots of E.C so it is possible to get an A/A+.
I took Gabby for Chem 102 and then again for 104, she was great both times. An amazing professor, she cares about her students and makes sure that they can all do well. Holds your hand throughout the entire semester. I wished she taught every single class.
Love her !!! She's so cute and it's clear she is really rooting for your success. Reach out to her outside of class, she's so great. She helps you in a lot of ways when it comes to grading.
You gon' learn. you will !!! no other ways out. There are probably a hundred homeworks i had to do. It was annoying but super helpful. However, she is kinda harsh when you email her. Worst part is that, for 50 questions, you will get 2 hours to finish, it can be too little time for some people like me. TAs are the worstest worst. Your points gone!!
An absolute diamond of the chem department! Grading curve is so generous and she actually cares about you and is understanding especially if you speak to her outside of class. I would take Gabby again a millionnnnn times over and over again.
Class is graded by 3 midterms and 1 final. Overall, I would say it is not too difficult to get an A as long as you STUDY! A lot of people leave less positive reviews for her bc of the hybrid style, but she is very helpful/accessible and the online videos are very good. They cover everything you will need to know. She is a great chemistry professor!
Dr. Smeureanu is an excellent choice for CHEM102. While the hybrid style may not work for everyone, she really cares about your success and gives tons of opportunities for extra credit. Highly recommend
This was my first time taking chemistry online during a summer session! Professor Smeureanu made it very easy with her instructions. She had a guide to help us manage our pace right through. If you're unclear, she will help you.
Professor Smeureanu assigns a lot of homework on sapling and this class is very difficult.
Gabriela was not a great professor this class was a do it yourself class where you have to do everything by your own cause the review sessions was not very helpful
This was my first time taking chem online and Professor Smeureanu made everything very clear! If you are used to the hybrid style of the class , you will be able to do well. She is very understanding and gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. She is available to help you and genuinely wants you do well. It is graded by 3 tests, final and hw
Don't believe any of the negative reviews about this professor, because she is one of the best chemistry professors I've ever taken! She genuinely cares for all of her students, gives you extra time on clickers, tries to curve grades, and is very helpful in her office hours. She goes over the material thoroughly and clear ! Take her if you can!
Gabi is a real gem. Do your sapling, go to clickers after watching the Sapling vids, and take the practice tests before the real tests and you'll be fine. She has office hours too where she's pretty helpful as well. TA for her as well!
Professor Smeureanu definitely knows her content and I have read the reviews of flipped classroom and I would say that it really isn't her fault that Hunter decided to teach chemistry in such a manner. However, if she is very knowledgeable and is a true gem as she can explain the content flawlessly.
The professor won't teach, especially with everything online. if you are looking to get taught in chem don't choose this professor you will have quizzes every week and won't learn anything. BEWARE
Prof. is excellent + I loved the flipped learning model (you study content at home + do clicker q's via lecture). Really solidifies the learning material. She provides a WEALTH of info + resources for you to succeed; you have access to old exams + reefs. I mean, she couldn't make it easier for you. Study all of above , and you will ace exams!
Workload is not easy. Sections of tophot due every week, recitations were mostly quizzes, graded participation during class through mc questions. Don't slack and you'll pass, took 4 chem courses and she was the best prof so far
The professor great, she does not teach. Get yourself a tutor and get ready to study a lot. Don't overthink doing the quizzes and the seams.
She doesn't teach at all, but if you can manage all the material on your own, you'll be fine. Make sure to do good on those exams, cuz somehow she thinks a class average of 75% is good and won't curve the exams. For the final she said it was gonna have 50 basic questions with simple calculations and vocabulary. But she lied and made it so hard.
One of the best professors, who actually cares about the students. She is extremely helpful and ensures that we can all get As.
Great professor, truly wants her students to pass and provides all the resources needed to do that despite it being mostly an online course.
Tests are a mix of extremely easy and wait, I didnt study for this.
Tests are a mix of extremely easy and we didnt prepare for this.
Great professor , probably the best in the department very caring and really wants you to do good she provides all the resources you need to be able to learn and pass take advantage of all the resources and youll do great!
One of the best professors at Hunter College. She really wants all of her students to succeed!
Gabriela was truly an amazing professor. Although this class was asynchronous, her lecture videos were very straightforward and she made concepts very clear. Just watch the lectures, take notes, and you'll be fine. Also make sure you don't miss any exams because she doesn't do makeups. Overall, great class.
Gabriella is a great professor. For an asynchronous class she made it very enjoyable and her expectations were always clear. If you watch the lectures and power points the quizzes will be very straightforward. Quizzes once a week & there's two exams. No make-ups so make sure you don't miss. Gives all the resources and wants her students to succeed!
This is an asynch class but the videos this professor provided were super clear and understandable. We also have a 10 question quiz every week which was super easy if you just listen to her pre-recorded lectures. Honestly a super easy class if you just do all the required assignments.
Professor Smeureanu is such an amazing professor. Her class consisted of videos as her lecture and short quizzes. She made the class extremely understandable and was accesible for extra help. She is extremely kind and even offered extra credit at the end or the semester worth 10 points!! Definitely an easy A+!
I took her class asynchronous, just do the quizzes and if you need to watch the lectures videos, there is only two exams throughout the semester, overall a really good professor.
Very straightforward class. Watch the videos, take notes, do the homework, go to class. The problems done in class on REEF (iClicker) are the most helpful for tests. Gabi is very kind and understanding, she also responds to emails well. Recitation is also very helpful if you have a good TA or if your partners know the material well.
Despite being an asynchronous chemistry class, I thoroughly enjoyed being in this class. The video lectures were clear and very straightforward. The quizzes also reflected the video lectures given. Ms. Smeureanu is also very caring and will answer your questions asap. I'd take her class again if I could.
A lecture hall hybrid class with over 200+ students. The t.a's teach the subject, while the professor analyzes the student body; so, more focused on cheaters. The lecture isn't a lecture; it's an open book quiz with others. T.a's know what they're doing others stair. Do not take this class if you can't handle large environments or social learning.
She calls it a "flipped learning" course. It's another way of saying "You watch videos, teach yourself, and pass the class on your own. My only job as a professor will be to give you exams and plug in your grades by the week's end." The lectures aren't lectures - they're just so you can do "practice questions." Ask around. They'll tell you the same
she is a very nice and knowledgeable professor.
Amazing professor really cares about her students but you need to work hard use all the resources she provides
She shows absolutely no humanity towards her students. Should you need anything at all on a humane level from her, expect nothing. Class is easy enough, though she teaches nothing and expects you to learn everything from online video. Pointless quizzes, exams are often harder than the hw, but she'll curve the grade because everyone does horribly.
She's very caring and understanding. If you are ever confused about something in the lab, you can ask her and she'll help you. She posts you what you need to include in your lab report to get a 100, so just make sure you follow that. Overall, she made the 8 AM lab enjoyable and manageable, and I would 100% retake her.
She was very nice for chem106 lab. She was a lenient grader and made sure we all got 100's on our lab reports. She was very informative and guided us on how to do the labs. Just make sure you are on time for lab because she won't let you in after 10 minutes, which makes sense since it is a lab.
the lectures for this class were straightforward yes, but lacking in depth. there were maybe 3-4 practice questions for watch video that did not make it easy to learn. absolutely no late work, and tests were harder than quizzes. she did however curve the grade in the end
Professor Smeureanu was very straightforward with what you need to pass her class. This class was asynchronous. Each week you get videos that you watch on your own time, which are the lectures. You get a 10 questions quiz on them which is pretty straightforward if you watch the video or look at the slides. Try not to turn stuff in late! Only 2 Exam
Doesnt teach
If you want to teach yourself everything this is the class for you. Shes really not understanding and doesnt explain anything in lecture but I can see that she nice since she has a nice energy to her spirit
She doesnt teach lectures are pointless because all she does is cheer. Kind of a waste of time. Hunter clearly is not the school for stem.
I love prof Smeureanu but she does not teach... You need to watch videos from tophat that she posts and they usually don't make a lot of sense. She has a lot of TA's walking around in the class who teach more than she does but she is really caring for her students and does curve the exams. You will pass this class but you need to teach yourself.
Professor Smeureanu was an absolute gem! She made chem104 as simple as she can with the explanations she gives during lectures, especially during her office hours (definitely recommend attending). She tries her best to make sure you understand the concept, if you do your part and study the materials you should do fine on the exams and iclicker.
Her class is very straight-forward. There are weekly async quizzes, but they are based on the video lectures she posts. For exams, there is a midterm and a final. She is very nice and understanding! You will do well as long as you attend all labs and do the lab work!!
Getting a good grade in this class is not difficult at all. She makes her expectations very clear, as long as you complete all the homework assignments and reefs, there's not much extra studying that has to be done. She gives ample resources and practice questions. She genuinely wants the students to succeed.
THIS IS BY FAR THE EASIEST CHEMISTRY CLASS! 2 lowest quiz grades get dropped and 1 midterm and 1 final. The exams and quizzes are based on what you did in the lab and in lectures! Dr. Smeureanu is kind, respectful, and outgoing with all her students! She'll do everything she can to give you a good grade, but don't ask for an A if you don't try.
Her lectures were easy to understand and the quizzes that came after the lecture were also pretty easy. She is responsive to questions/emails. If you watch the lectures (they were all short) and do the quizzes, you will do well. For the lab portion, I would say to pay more attention to your work there.
The professor really made everything clear. The class was very slow-paced and manageable. There were a lot of opportunities for extra credit on tests, homework, etc. I have no complaints at all. If you just do what you're supposed to do in the course, then you will likely get an A.
She's pretty kind and generous with scoring and gives major curves, but I'm not sure why people give her 5/5 since she doesn't do any actual teaching. We used TopHat and assigned videos to learn the content and went into class to simply practice what we learned. Her system focuses on self-teaching and some serious focus on hours of video-watching.
She is the sweetest professor. I have never met such a caring person. She literally sets you up for success. I love her !
Loved Professor as a lab instructor. She is so sweet, radiates positive energy, and makes you genuinely enjoy lab. She makes it very clear on what she wants on lab reports and presentations. She wants you to do well on everything. Favorite professor
honestly very difficult class with a good professor, i couldn't take it and did nc but shes a good professor as long as you study. its alot of Independent work unfortunately. start studying early and go to office hours it will help. talk to her and she will be nice. dont take kobko take gabriela pls pls pls.
TAKE HER. TRUST ME. She is the best option for chem 106 lab. She is a very lenient grader!! You have lab reports, 2 presentations, and a lab practical. The lab practical is composed of three parts: safety quiz, experimental, and calculation questions. If you just show effort, you will get an A or A+.
she is someone who fell from heaven... not being dramatic. she is fast grader and gives excellent feedback. yes you have to study everything by yourself but she gives every single sources to do well on the exams. she also CURVES as much as she good and gives extra credit as well. if you dont take her for chem, its your loss.
My only problem with this class is that it's a flipped classroom setting. Instead of the professor lecturing, she reads off her slides and wants us to do the work ourselves. But as long as you study well and keep track of your deadlines, this class should not be too hard
took her for both chem 101 and chem 102. wasn't too fond of her teaching method at a giant lecture hall setting for 102 so I dropped that course. loved her for chem 101 with the lecture videos per topic being very concise and detailed for me to do the online quizzes. would take her again if I have the chance.
Kindest science professor I ever took. I took her in a hybrid class; her lectures are detailed, so you can understand them. She gave extra credit opportunities to help everybody with these grades. I would totally retake her.
Dr Smeureanu truly made the class straightforward and easy to understand. I had her lectures online and there was weekly quizzes. the quizzes weren't very hard as long as you watch the lectures and understand the concepts. she is truly a gem. she answers back to emails quickly and explains everything well. I definitely recommend!
She didn't teach the topics rather she gave questions testing how much you self-learned the material. Most of the class was us self-learning from TopHat which I didn't like. Going to office hours helped get a better understanding of the material and doing a lot of self-practice with the practice exams and reefs.
Attend all the lectures because you participate via iClickers which are used in your grade. I took her as a HS sophomore as part of the CollegeNow program. Very caring and always answers any questions. Very mindful of her students, funny, and pleasant. Quick grader. No homework or projects. She gave us Ferrero Rocher when we finished finals.
Gabriela is such a peach. She shows true passion in her subject and always tries to make her lectures more entertaining. Exams and lectures were online but easy to follow along with. Responds quickly to any questions given. Shows that she truly cares about her students. Would def recommend
Though I never met or even interacted with her (async course with video lectures, etc.), I would def recommend! Her videos are usually relatively short/concise, and contain all the info you need (everything she quizzes and tests on is covered in her lectures/slides). She's great at teaching exactly what you should know without overwhelming you.
This class was very easy to pass if you studied the provided materials. The practice exams were very similar to the actual exams, and she sometimes copied questions from the practice tests. Reef sections were also very engaging and she explained concepts well. She gives A LOT of extra credit, so I would highly recommend taking her for Gen Chem!
Amazing professor! truly cares for her students and wants them to succeed. wait till fall smester to take this course with her. study her practice tests from the previous years and youll be sure to pass with an A.
Best Chem professor there is! She offers a lot of office hours and extra credit. As long as you practice you will pass! I liked that she reviewed some of the topics before starting reef!
Learn lecture content via TopHat videos and do Reef during class. She gives a lot of time for iClickers and will redo the questions if the class avg is too low. She gives exams from previous years that were very similar to our actual exams. Gave a lot of extra credit and resources, the exam curves were also amazing, and replied to my email quick.
Gabi is amazing!!! Gives lots of EC chances, exams all MC, and uses reef and tophat. Can drop one exam if you score higher on final. You have to teach yourself everything- tophat videos, but there are lots of office hours from her and TAs. You can still pass even if you fail all exams. Redoes reef questions if % is too low for the right answers.
I had her last semester for Chem 102 and this semester for 104 and she is good. The only problem though has to be the reverse classroom pedagogy; she expects everyone to know the material before coming to the lecture.
All you have to do is watch short video lectures (you also have access to the ppt) and take a quiz the next day. There are only two exams for this class but 12 quizzes. Her videos and the PPT are easy to understand and the quizzes aren't hard to pass, especially if you use your resources correctly. Wouldn't wing the exams, but it's possible.
Good professor? Yes. Good class policies? No. You have to "teach yourself" the course material and you are placed into groups to do workshops together, and my group lost members after two of them quit, and I wound up quitting too because the weight became too overwhelming.
She is amazing, gave lots of curves and extra credit. Please wait till spring to take her for chem 102. Make sure to attend office hours for help because lectures are like a small quiz where we answer q's. Offers lots of peer TA's and help through office hours.
I am normally great with "reverse learning" or whatever she calls it but for this class it was absolutely atrocious. You shouldn't take this professor if you have basically no chemistry knowledge. I had taken chem100 and I struggled immensely. The extra credit people are talking about is almost non-existent. Do not take her if you want to pass chem
the best choice in a bad situation. caring prof, inconvenient learning system.
The class has a unique learning style, but with diligent self-study and using Unstuck AI for extra practice, it's manageable. Attend office hours for support.
The worst professor I have ever had. Doesn't teach anything as she makes you watch videos she posted years ago. Anytime I asked for clarification on a quiz question, she would just give me the answer, no explanation. She did not excuse my missed lab even though I was in the hospital. I truly think Hunter would be better off without her.
Chem at hunter is bad no matter the professor but Gabby was breath of fresh air in comparison to Kobko, coming from someone who's retaking. Exams were curved and there were EC opportunities. My only issue was with TopHat, which I hated. I enjoyed the smaller class sizes and felt more seen and like I could actually ask for help.
Her videos are reposts from the pandemic. Bad audio quality and spelling errors. If you ask her to explain a question, she sends you the answer. Completely unhelpful. What does she get paid for? She wouldn't count my excuse for a lab even though I was in the hospital. This is by far the most inhumane and inconsiderate professor I've ever had.
This class is straightforward and easy to follow, with clear instructions provided for every assignment and lab. The professor and the lab TA is very helpful and approachable, always willing to assist if you have questions. While attendance and being on time on lab days are emphasized, it's manageable as long as you stay on top of things.
Professor Smeureanu did a great job teaching CHEM 10100 online. Even though the class was virtual, she provided detailed and clear explanations of the material, which made it easier to understand. Her lectures were thorough, and she explained concepts step by step, which was really helpful for an online class.
i have not seen her for the entire semester which idk if thats a good thing or not. her grading system is rlly good. u js rlly gotta show up for the labs and do the labs since majority of ur grades rely on labs. a hard to fail class.
Awful hated that class
just put in the work and gen chem would be over😭
She gave ec for every test, ec for a pre semester reivew, and ec for funsies. She also curved the whole class by like 3% at the end of the semester. She goes above and beyond for the students of this school, and is totally epic.
honestly one of the best professors i have had at hunter. she sparked my interest in chemistry and helped me through a lot. one big advice i can give is take advantage of office hours. since lecture is pretty much practice questions that are graded, you want to be prepared before class. the peer ta's always walk around SO ASK FOR HELP. take her!!!
Take Gabby! I previously struggled with General Chemistry, but her class made a huge difference. The environment, especially during her office hours, was much less intimidating and incredibly helpful. Don't be afraid to attend; they're a game-changer! My top tips: attend office hours, practice iClickers, and review past exams for success!
i love gabby! she genuinely wants what's best for you and is there to help. she is one of my fav professors at Hunter! def take her if you can. make sure to come to the lecture for the clickers as those are for participation and good practice. I also suggest going to office hours and asking any questions that come to mind. good luck!
I had a great time in her class. She is willing to teach and very sweet with offering all materials needed to pass the exams. Office hours are really helpful, some people go and sit there and ask no questions, don't do that y'all. I saw a girl sitting there and doing hw and not asking the TA. This is your time to ask any questions. Take advantage..
I really enjoyed taking Chem with the professor last semester at SPS. She was easy to reach, more than fair with her grading, and enjoyable over all.
Took Gabi for 102/104. Much better than kobko. Take advantage of Peer TA's they can break down concepts for you. Make sure to do HW and recitation getting full points in those and clicker can rlly help ur grade. Good luck y'all!
Had Gabi last fall and doing her RMP rn bcs she truly is the best option for genchem. Do the hw's attend iclicker and study with practice q's and ur gucci. I attended office hours before each lecture to make sure I understood all topics which helped me get full points for clicker and do amazing on her exams.
Anyone who fails chem with her or gets less than a A- needs to reevaluate. She's nice gives the normal difficult level of work that pre med students need to handle. If you fail this class, don't become a doctor.
All things considered, great professor. There is a tonamount of extra credit built into the course so it is easy to get a good grade. I dislike the program (TopHat) she uses. Nice person; you don't interact with the professor much.
Great prof horrible teaching system. Be prepared to do a lot self learning. GO TO TA OFFICE HOURS AND DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS AND BE GOOD AT TIME MANGEMENT. GOOD LUCK.
She's fair with grading and overall I really enjoy her classes. Her slides are very well explained and easy to understand.
100 percent recommend! She cares a lot about her students and does everything possible to improve their grades. Lots of extra credit throughout the course. The class is difficult, but Gabriela helps a lot!
AWESOME PROF!! If you want to succeed in this courses she provides ALL THE MATERIALS YOU NEED. 10/10! Do all the practice exams and make sure you understand the topics, especially acids and bases since that is the hardest topic.
Professor Smeureanu is a dedicated educator who clearly outlines her course and uses many examples. I, who struggled with Chemistry, succeeded in her general chemistry course. Lessons are self-directed via TopHat, with the most effective study methods being clickers, practice exams, and recitation questions.
You're never gonna see her, the class is online, no zoom meetings. But the video lectures are informative and clear, and the weekly quiz is straightforward. It's impossible to fail this class unless you don't touch the lectures. There's one quiz weekly (usually 10 questions) and two exams.
I had kobko for 102...she was a villan compared to gabby! Gabby ensures you understand the iClicker questions and genuinely tries her best to help you grasp the content. I thought chemistry was hard but she makes it so easy!
Professor Smeureanu is a great professor. The lectures are really great to watch and understand. There are weekly quizzes for one day. And 2 exams. You're probably never gonna meet her but she's not bad. Although you can't miss any quizzes, labs, or exams because there are NO makeups.
