Very nice person on a personal level, but I hate to say... terrible, horrible, terrible class. Nitpicky and negativist grader. Admits to not knowing the subject as well as she should, yet rips essays and papers with a cavalier, authoritarian zeal. Stay very, very far away from this class. Very far away.
I liked this class. She is knowledgeable about the subject matter, and willing to answer questions. She dispells many myths concerning European exploration and colonization. Her papers have clear guidelines, and she is always willing to help students. Just pay attention and don't make broad statements. I enjoyed her.
Very vague on instructions, expects a two page paper to have as much research as a 12 page paper, what she thinks is an answer isn't- its just a whole bunch of terms arranged in a paragraph, overall I'd avoid this professor. Shes also obsessed with slavery, we haven't talked about anything else about early American culture other than that.
Horrible teacher. Difficult grader, expects way too much out of small papers. Cannot seem to be pleased. Avoid this professor at all costs.
She soooo nice! She is a very knowledgeable professor who is willing to help at all costs. Don't expect to go into this class and not work hard for a good grade. She is an very hard grader, but she lets you redo everything! I learned a lot in her class about history & about writing. Most challenging, but rewarding class I have ever had in college.

Very nice professor, but the hardest grader I have EVER had at Grand Valley! I pulled out great grades after redos of papers, but was killed by participation! Participation is 20% of the grade & even though I came to all classes, paid attention, took notes & spoke up a few times her grade brought me down from a solid A to a B+! Very hard to please!
OMG the HARDEST grader i have EVER HAD and i'm a junior. Ridculous. Get professor Coolidge if you can.
OFten came to class late. Canceled class without much warning. We met almost as many times as she canceled class. When class was held, she often lectured and did not really have a direction in the lecture. A few times class got out early because she even confused herself during her lecture. She isnt clear on expectations in class or papers.
Horrible teacher, her lectures ramble on, repeats herself every week. A lot of group work for participation, cancels class all the time, really no point to sit thru class just show up for the tests, becuase you don't learn anything. Also no need to really take notes, she gives you study guides that are actually the notes. weird
avoid at all costs, honestly. she is a feminist and a TOUGH GRADER who will destroy your GPA if you don't agree with her. you've had your warning.
I've only been in her class for a few weeks now, but i find this class to be super easy. every quiz is open note and her lectures basicly spell out the quizzes. she gives you study guides to take notes on when you read a book, and those are the exact same questions on the quizzes. you can also use the study guide on your quiz.
I didn't think I was going to enjoy this class or learn anything from it. I was so wrong! I find myself explaining things about the witch hunts of early modern Europe to my friends and family and engaging in disscussions about it! I reccommend her as a professor! The advice that I offer is do the reading!!! It will help limit your stress!
This was an awesome class! She's a great prof, very understanding if you are running behind on turning in papers or have questions. Lots of info on the witch hunts in both old and new times.
This was arguably the worst class I've taken in my 4 years of college. It's hard to give her a bad rating because she was only there for about half of the semester because of a health problem but while she was there, she was slow at returning emails and just not a really good teacher.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! This is the easiest class I have ever taken! Easier than most high school classes! No actual text book, just a few small primary sources. Weekly quizzes based on lecture, but are open note. So basically go to class and take notes get an A. She also lets you use notes on the Mid-Term, so if you don't want to do work TAKE HER!
very easy class. just show up and take notes and you will be fine, along with doing the very few readings she assigns. all quizzes/tests are open note so very little work is done
She mumbles and is incredibly rude to students. Not responsive at all to student questions. Picks one or two people and is extremely annoyed when they raise their hand or don't understand something. Its hard to watch a professor treat a student so poorly for asking a question that none of us knew. If you're a talkative or curious student, avoid her
She's horrible. What was supposed to be a sports history class she turned into a sports diversity class. She put so much emphasis on women and African-Americans that the class was pretty much based off of it and she stops just short of blaming white males for everything. She's an extremely tough grader and doesn't tell you what you did wrong. Avoid
i was excited going into this sports history class but it was all focused on women/african americans/old sports such as boxing, baseball, swimming...none of the more exciting sports such as football, basketball, etc. VERY tough grader. recommend other teacher
I was very interested in the material, but Prof. Gottlieb was unable to communicate clearly and was unable to use BlackBoard, so we were never given enough notice to have certain readings done prior to testing. I dropped this class because of the professor, not the material.
I am not at all a history person, but I loved this class! The material was interesting, and I did not have any problems with the professor. She was nice, informative, and easy...she allowed us to use our books for all quizzes/tests! No complaints here!
Very rude. The class should be easy because theres not a ton of work and everything is open book but she grades very hard and is very picky.
Dont listen to the bad comments, she is a great prof!! Quizzes are open note and you get a card for the exam, exams are definitions that you can have on your notecard and a primary source thats all, also bumps up grade if you put in noticeable effort! and tells you exactly what will be on exams! also very willing to help you if you are struggling!
Very tough grader. All the quizzes are open book, and even if you write down exactly what she said, you still get marked down. She flies through the notes, I left every class with a cramped hand from writing 15 pages of notes every night. Avoid this professor if possible!
Grades quizzes harshly. Often gives out busy work. No final exam though that was nice.
Very very tough grader, even if you write down what she says you still get marked down. Stay away from her.
Professor G is willing to help, if you ask! A big part of your grade is a map quiz and a journal article, both of which are easy. I was sick and had to reschedule the midterm; she was very gracious about it. She is a tough grader because she expects you to get better as the semester goes on. Can't miss more than 3 classes or your grade goes down.
If you are the kind of person who skips class and expects to pass with an A, or at all, Professor Gottlieb is not for you! If you miss more than three classes your grade goes down and you must take notes every lecture which you are graded on! However, you can use the notes during tests. You have to read a lot in her class.Even novels.A lot of work!
I wouldnt recommend her.
History is one of my least favorite subjects and when I had signed up for this class, I thought I was in trouble. As it turns out, I think most of the reason that I did well in this class was because of professor Gottlieb. She is a fantastic professor. She is very nice and helpful and if you do the readings and come to class, you will do great!
Honestly, I cannot stand history and I was not looking forward to this class. Professor Gottlieb is so easy and so nice! All you have to do is attend class and take notes and you will be just fine! I loved her!
I hated American history before but now I actually enjoy it. She was a very helpful professor and taught very well. Her tests were pretty easy and were similar to her study guides. She gave weekly online assignments which were annoying and involved a lot of reading but benefited your grade if you did well.
This profesor didnt have any notes and she lectured the entire time. There are a lot of online homework assignments and she usually has videos and readings. I would take this class if you like listening but if you need notes than this might not be the best profesor for you. Also tests are easy all multiple choice and short answer.
I enjoyed her class. She was really helpful with all of the papers. The weekly assignments were a pain, but she graded pretty lenient on them. There was a lot of reading, but it was used in the papers.
SWS Abolition of Slave Trade - I was apprehensive about the subject, but Professor Gottlieb set up a great reading list. I became very interested in the subject. Important to do readings for class discussion, she will get impatient if it's obvious no one did the reading. Strict grader, but fair.
Overall a pretty good prof. I like history so it made the class more interesting but if you don't like history then you might not like her. She basically just told a big story about history and the best thing to do is take notes, if you take good notes and pay attention you'll do fine
I thought Gabrielle was a fantastic professor. Since she was not brought up in the American education system, she has an unbiased approach to history which helped me learn effectively. She lectures the whole time, and her tests are not the easiest, but if you pay attention and put in the time, she is definitely worth it!
She is a pretty good professor. I think it was just more difficult because I had her 6 to 9 class. she just lectures for the full time and you are just expected to write down what yo think is important. She doesn't have any note outlines or powerpoints. She writes some stuff on the board, but if you copy just that you will do bad on the tests.
Prof Gottlieb is an awesome prof. I loved the witches class, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The workload was light, weekly reading questions, 2 exams, and a final paper. History of witches is, of course, fascinating and I liked how Gottlieb presented the information and held class discussions.
Prof. Gottlieb was a great professor. She had a slight accent but was still able to communicate the subject matter very effectively to the class. I e-mailed her when I was falling behind and she was willing to help me. As long as you write down the notes she puts on the board and make an effort to complete the study guide, the class should be easy.
Professor Gottlieb was great. I'm very glad I took the class with her! I would recommend her.
Professor Gottleib is nice and I thought she was a very fair professor. She does give reading assignments which can get annoying but if you put the slightest amount of time and effort into them they are easy A's and they will cushion your grade. Expect to take notes the entire class period but I thought her exams were fair. Overall fairly easy A
So far she has been my favorite professor. The class is all lecture, but she goes over what will be on every exam, as long as you do the assignments and come to class, it's a very easy A.
One of the hardest graders I've ever had. My capstone was graded easier than this class. The grade does not reflect the work put in, I honestly believe I would have gotten an A if I'd had a different teacher.
Professor Gottlieb is a difficult professor. She is an extremely hard grader at times and an easy one during others. She is German and hard to stand sometimes and her handwriting is hard to read. If you pay attention and take lots of notes, you can do well. I was super excited about this class before taking it and now, I find this subject boring.
loved this class, i took it over the summer.i am not a fan of reading, but we read e3 books in 8 weeks and i enjoyed it. if you show up, do your work read and participate it is an easy A. written exams, but not to horrible.
You will learn history in her class, but be prepared to overhaul your papers four times in order to get an A. She is helpful if you ask questions.
She lectures and writes on the board all hour, no powerpoints. Attendance is mandatory. Two tests, that are very clearly outlined and they are easy. The final is a combination of questions from the 1st and 2nd exam. Reading assignments almost every week, but they are easy. Very nice prof and is funny at sometimes. Has a little accent
Prof Gottlieb is pretty clear. She lectures without a PowerPoint and as long as you take notes and pay attention you'll be fine. She gives you a study guide for the exams that are pretty clear cut. First exam was take-home because she went to Germany for a week and a half. As long as you do your work you will have no problem getting a good grade.
She writes on the board for the full class, no powerpoint, and has the sloppiest handwriting ever so if you aren't listening you won't know what she just wrote. She also assigns way too much reading for a gen ed, so if you don't want to read 100 pages a week don't take her class.
Professor Gottlieb asks for a lot from her students. Her exams are pretty straight forward, and as long as you take good notes, you'll be fine. Attendance is mandatory and skipping will make you miss all the questions for the exams. She is helpful and understanding, but if you don't want to put in work, don't take her!
Every class is a lecture but the notes are very clear and she will clarify them if you have any questions. For tests, as long as you don't miss class and take good notes, the study guides are very similar to the actual test so reviewing is easy. The is homework due dates are spaced out well but the they can be long with a lot of reading.
I don't understand why so many people are reviewing her negatively! Her tests are literally everything on the study guide. Study the study guide, you'll get an A or a B! Reading isn't that bad and their isn't 100 pages a week!! Not even close! One thing I didn't really care for was how much class she missed. She's also German, but easily understood
Professor Gottlieb is a straight forward professor. You have 1 map quiz during the semester. There are 2 tests and a final. She gives you a study guide and the notes you take in class, you can just put right into the study guide. About 1-2 hours of HW each week. Good class.
she's a little bit rude and has a slight accent but overall she was a good teacher and had reasonable expectations. Also many blackboard assignments.
Ridiculously heavy homework load. Paper after paper after project after essay. This teacher is truly a slave driver. Get ready to work really hard if you take one of her classes.
She drove me up the wall. it was an 8:30 class so obviously people will sleep through alarms and be late every now and again right? She was insanely rude about it. I never personally had an experience but she would pick and choose days where she would lock the door so you couldnt get in if you were late EVEN THOUGH THE CLASS IS MANDATORY. RUDE PROF
She's definitely a boring prof because she just writes on the whiteboard and lectures the whole class. She's kind of rude and has a little bit of an accent. There is a lot of homework and she takes off random points on assignments for no reason. It's a pretty easy class if you do the study guide and show up to class though.
A very good professor. Pay attention to her lectures and you will pass. She makes you do some mandatory homework assignments and 2 optional where you pick. 2 exams and a final which half of the final is questions from the other exams. Very nice and caring professor.
Looking for an online gen ed class? WELL LOOK AGAIN. This class was absolutely terrible. I never do those LIFT surveys but with this professor i felt the obligation to do it to save other students. If you like to be put to sleep while reading 50+ pages of articles a week this class is for you! Alot of promises made by professor, never followed thru
Professor Gottlieb is one of the worst profs I've had at Grand Valley. She gave heavy 3 or more readings a week that were 20-30 pages each. The videos she gave were often 45 or longer. I always felt stressed because there was so much work and not much time to do it all. She was also rude when she graded and replied to messages. I wouldn't recommend
Feedback wasn't specific, and came off rude (so did her emails). Collaboration project was an absurd amount of work and had a six page paper that followed. Only two exams but she was looking for specific answers. Most questions I didn't remember even discussing in lecture. Exams were about 15 short answer/essay questions with not enough time to do.
She was hands down the rudest professor I have ever had. I took this class as a gen ed and it was more work and graded harsher than my capstone. She interrupted people in the middle of their presentations, telling them that their information was not right and other things that were rude. Our whole entire class would agree that she was terrible.
She is a very caring professor. Her lectures were long and you had to take a lot of notes. There are assignments you have to do occasionally on blackboard and there is a midterm and a final. The final consists of 50% of the material that was from the midterm so that is helpful.
Probably the worst professor I've had so far. She doesn't use power points. She writes everything down in a mess on the board and doesn't explain the material properly. Get ready to teach yourself the material because her lectures are confusing!
Worst professor I've had here, by far. I would rate her a 0 if I could. She looks for the most specific answers and even if you word it differently, you're wrong. She's not pleasant, rude, and is just overall a terrible professor. She expects a lot and gives terrible, useless feedback. Do not take her.
Worst prof I have ever had. I took this class because it sounded interesting and it was a gen ed class HAD i known how much work went into this class I would not have taken it. You have two reading assignments every week, each assignment 20+ pages. If you skip more than 1 class you go down a letter grade. 60 min presentation, all written exams.
Do not take her class. She is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. She's so rude and doesn't use slides. She just writes random crap on the board and doesn't finish her thoughts. We used the book one time the whole semester. You have an assignment every week where you have to read 20-50 pages and write about it. She is awful.
I didn't look both ways crossing the street every day on my way to this class on the off chance I could hopefully get taken out by a car. She writes hard-to-follow, scribbly notes on the board. She is extremely rude and abrasive. and forget about the crazy reading assignments. The map quiz is irrelevant. Horrible experience
She is not a caring prof at all. Very short and annoyed when you question her grading. She grades very randomly with no real explanation of her process. I enjoy history very much, but I hated this class because of her. She does not seem to know what she is talking about half the time, honestly. Ruined my GPA, don't take a class with her.
30+ page readings and weekly reading assignments each week. (Trust me, length of your reading assignment matters. Do not just try to meet the minimum requirement.) MANY tests/papers and a 60 minute presentation... for an ELECTIVE course. If you don't impress in the first week DROP!! You won't recover. Sad to see no changes due to COVID-19
I thought she was fine. Pretty straightforward class. Gives lectures on the content, and then exams. It was a hybrid course so the exams were open note so that certainly helped. She knew what she was talking about and spent class time to review for essays and exams. Overall, she was a decent professor.
I really enjoyed this class and the prof, don't know why there is such a low rating. Had her for a hybrid course, she grades sort of tough but wants to make sure you understand materials. She answers questions well and loves participation. Just don't slack off and you'll be fine with Gottlieb.
Overall the class was fine. There was a lot of readings, weekly assignments, & one group project and paper. Class is lecture heavy & sometimes feels confusing. She can be kind of hard to reach outside of class. I have almost always double sent emails. She seems to be a little stricter at times but overall nice. I'd take her again if I had to!
Not nice.
I really enjoyed Professor Gottlieb! I can understand why she may have bad ratings, but if you show up and be respectful you won't have an issues. As any student should just know to do. She will call you out on things and is hard headed. I usually hate history classes, but I really enjoyed her lectures!
Very mid. Not someone who will leave a lasting impact in a good or bad way. She gives great feedback, but lectures and videos can be boring.
Attendance is mandatory as she takes it for a grade and missing a lecture will set you behind. Really only has 1 assignment a week but is a tough grader. Gives good feedback and is overall understanding and caring.
Her assignments took so many hours to do and they all consisted of so much writing and relating it back to the long videos/ readings.
Gottlieb is a good professor, just not life-changing or anything. She explains content well, and the coursework was easy. My one qualm is that I felt like I deserved a bit of a higher grade on certain assignments. Do the work and be respectful, and you'll have a good experience. Don't bother with the textbook - just make sure not to miss lectures.
Weekly readings are the worst part, always at least 30 pages to read with a 500-word response. Other than that I had no issues with her or the class. As long as you go to class you should get an A. There's also a group project but she gives you two weeks of in-class time to work on it, with no other homework those weeks.
Does not reply to emails. The only learning materials were readings and about 3 videos. No powerpoints or video lectures provided. She gets upset at the whole class when everyone does bad on the quiz, it is not our fault we don't have much learning material. Felt like she got upset and annoyed when I asked questions. Grades through her own opinions
She graded off her own opinions which I didn't feel was fair to me. I finished with a B in the class, that she took over from another professor who was ill. I should've finished with an A considering I aced the exam. She was easily frustrated with a lot of students. I liked the way she taught it was interesting and easily understood.
She's smart and tough, nice lady, don't be a fool and you shouldn't have a problem.
Strictly lecture-based and does not post lectures online. Great teacher, very flexible, just don't skip class.
Unfriendly
Way too much work: Easily 50+ pages of dense reading per week, 40 slide group PowerPoint AND a final exam due within 2 days of each other Nitpicky, patronizing prof that never gives 100%, only gives 94% with no feedback If you provide an answer that is correct for all the context you have, she'll still correct you condescendingly bc shes smarter
I enjoyed this class a lot, but note: there are many writing assignments, and she has no patience for laziness, so low achievers beware. Her course overall was great in my opinion, as her lectures were easy to follow and understand.
