all he does is scream at a very high speed. It's a bit frightening sitting near the front of the class, and it's very hard to communicate with him without him totally shooting you down.
Can sometimes talk a little fast but makes a normally boring subject exciting and interactive. Dry sense of humor makes the class lots of fun
AMAZING PROF!! one of the best prof's I have had. He is very open to class questions...does talk a bit fast, but makes pols very dynamic and fun. Very helpful outside of class if you have questions...good sense of humour.
Awesome prof! A fair marker, if you take good notes, you'll do alright. He is very articulate, and the classes are engaging
Awesome professor, great at lecturing but he expects students to speak up. If you can't say it you don't know it. Tests are fair, you just need to learn what he expects, which he says clearly. He made ancient political philosophy relevant to me again.
Great Prof without question my fav, knows his stuff i mean hes not Dr. Murphey for nothing right.Test are fair he gives you a list of terms to know and then there are 7 of those on the test 5 of which you have to answer with a half to full page respones.dosnt have "notes" per-say you just have to fallow the lecture which is easy to do youll learn
when you first meet this guy in class he can be very intimidating and the class seems hard but take his tests and he goes so easy on grades papers marked a little harder but class overall AMAZING i never thought about POLS the same way def. you owe it to yourself to take this class with him.
A very interesting fellow with a good sense of humour. Some might find his pace and language to be a little intimidating; however, you will get used to it eventually. He blatantly outlines what will be on the tests, so they are quite easy as a result. I highly recommend this professor.
If Political Science is your thing, and even if it's not, TAKE THIS CLASS. If this man does not single-handedly change the world, he will undoubtedly do so by association. "Most excellent in everything", even if you don't get the A.
articulate, compassionate, virtuous, passionate and actually interested in student's understanding. one of the best professors I have ever had. Political Science dept. needs more professors like him. He makes dry subject as political philosophy relevant to today. Always open to class questions!
I enjoyed his class. What made his lectures better is how goodlooking the Mr. Murphy is. Most prof are ugly and boring. He is hot and interesting!!!
Intelligent and passionate: Dr. Murphy is a professor worth studying under. If you're frustrated with social sciences, take a class with this man -he asks the right questions. I'm grateful.
Projects consist of printing off 200 pages of journal articles. Who knows how much money I wasted on printer ink and paper. I have no clue what my mark is right now going into the final (he doesn?t use blackboard effectively). He hasn?t handed back our 9 page research essays yet (handed them in on Nov 20th). Very un organized, terrible prof.
I didn't know what to think of him at first because he comes across as a bit egotistical and arrogant BUT if you need help with your assignments or trying to understand terms he is EXTREMELY helpful if you go see him and ask. He is a very fair marker. I would definitely take more classes with him.
i rated him last year and will do so again, still awesome without question the best prof ive ever known, hes confusing in that you cant understand who he is at a personal level however he is quick, all his lectures you will leave with a smile and feeling like you learned more about the existance of man. and yes ladies hes what we call man perdy
As a first year student, didn't know what to expect. Dr. Murphy is a great political science professor! Fair exams, and a very helpful guy when you need it.
Unless you have to take this class or love philosophy, stay away! very hard to understand, confusing, the class goes way to fast... 10 books! 6 in the last semester. also it is his view only that he want to hear about in his exams, so basically just write down everything that he says and memorize it.
wicked teacher, he is hard but worth all the effort. His attendance is not mandatory but Very important that you go to ever class b/c you will miss so much if you don't.
Murphy is the best prof I've ever had! Not only is he good to look at, but he knows his stuff. He is passionate about what he teaches and about helping you understand. He talks fast, so take a laptop and write down everything he says- he makes the material relevant & fun! Murphy quote of the year: "Have you ever tried to exercise with an erection?"
It's a good thing I got Dr. Murphy as my prof or I would have dropped this class being I am not the biggest fan of politics. He keeps his lectures interesting & he is not afraid to say what he thinks. He has been very helpful anytime I have gone to his office for help, & very accessible. Yes, he talks fast in class so PAY ATTENTION & don't be late!
"I went down to the Pireaus" - and you are hooked. You will NEVER think about the world in the same way again. Open your mind, pay attention, ask questions and read everything.
without question one of the most motivational and brilliant professors at Macewan. Take a class with this man, you won't regret it. He's a fiar marker and the workload is high, but the tradeoff is, unlike some social sciences, what it being said it actually important!
this guy is SO AWESOME. ridiculously intelligent, funny, and suuuuuuper hot!!
The man is brilliant. You will do lots of thinking if you get in his class, so be prepared. Not a hard marker, but presence and participation are crucial to your success. While Murphy is always straightforward, he is also VERY respectful.
You MUST attend class - he doesn't use Blackboard and his exams are based on he opinions he expresses in class, not your interpretation of the text (he doesn't care what YOU think of Aristotle). Class is massively entertaining. Make sure to show him paper drafts and get his opinion so you don't get surprised. I, like everyone, am in love with him.
He is an amazing proffessor, one of the few proffs who will call you out on any BS, but in a respectful manner. He is always willing to speak with you to help develope your paper, and it is super key to attend and participate in his classes. If you take good notes and read the materials, you will do amazing in his classes! He is brilliant.
Murphy is one of the best profs I've had at MacEwan. Not only is he extremely intelligent, he is passionate about what he teaches which is what makes him a good prof, what makes him a great prof is his passion for teaching and sharing knowledge, helping students expand their way of thinking. Every class is an adventure, I'm proud to be a Murphyite.
He is an amazing prof! Now, that I have transferred, I realize how much I miss his classes. I loved his classes. An awesome prof and one of the best I have had ever!
He's very smart knows his stuff and helpful. He can be quite arrogant at times. I believe that most people just adore him because he's sexy. Looks go a long way. He has his favorites and you can definitely tell when he doesn't like or care for you. Overall i can see why people like him but i am indifferent.
Classes are mandatory to succeed(don't worry he tends to make them interesting). Very helpful outside of class. Overall, I would chose him again to be my professor.
TAKE A LOT OF NOTES. He is really interesting to listen to, not boring at all. He's very funny and knows his stuff. The texts are pretty difficult though...final much more than midterms. Final was 5 essay questions and 2 essays. He expects you to actually THINK about what he's talked about rather than just memorizing facts
Professor Murphy is the best prof I've ever had. Anyone who gets to take classes with him is in for a huge treat, not only intellectually but he's amazingly hot too :) This course would suck if it were taught by anyone else. Just like everyone says, pay attention in class, don't skip, regurgitate his opinions
Best prof I have ever had. He is so engaging and seems like he genuinely loves his job! He talks fast and doesn't post or write notes so attendance is a must! Dont take this class if you are looking for an easy A. A hard earned B is more like it, but worth it. Seems intimidating at first but isnt once you get to know him. Super tough but fun!
Passionate, insightful, and interesting classes. Will definitely fail if you skip class. Would take another class with him again!
Murphy is the best prof that i ever had, super funny and he is very helpful, make sure to attend all his classes, if you miss u are toast, not mandatory though,he is hot and sexy, married though.overall, the best pols prof i ever had, would take him again if i did a pols class
Honestly the best professor I have ever had, I wasn't sure if I would like political science, but ended up taking three classes with him because he is the absolute best and gets you hooked on the material. you actually WANT to learn every bit that you can. your life will be so much better by taking one of his classes. DO IT!
Great professor. Taking his class convinced me to switch my education major from Bio to Social Studies. Though, he isn't easy. I felt sorry for the students who's first class was the midterm... they were screwed. Asks a lot of questions in class and isn't afraid of awkward silences, but if you answer and you're wrong, he'll let you know how and why
He is the inspiration for my political science minor. As long as you show up to class and take down what he says, you will be fine. He gives clear criteria for what is on is tests so there are never any surprises. His is one of the few classes I feel like I have learned something in.
Love his class! He is very funny and tends to make the lectures fun and enjoyable!
I thought I was going to hate this class but he made it really enjoyable for me and I actually looked forward coming to class. You definitely need to attend class to take notes but as long as you go to class, you'll easily get a good grade in this class. He tells you exactly what he expects and gives so much help if you reach out and ask for it.
He is super chill and one of my favourite profs. Is a very tough marker and his exams are ridiculously long but able to complete in the allowed time frame(barely)
Dr. Murphy is the best. Very knowledgeable of the subject matter. Challenges students, super helpful.
Have to go to his lectures! He doesn't teach off of powerpoint so it is important you go to class. He makes it interesting though, and he's nice to look at so that helps too :)
Have to be at every class otherwise you will miss concepts. tests on the concepts the class knows the least
His written feedback is illegible! :(
Great teacher, however class is mandatory. Puts nothing online. Gives you the test concepts in advance but you still have to be in class to understand them. All written tests that take a solid effort and time
Great prof. At first I didn't like his teaching style at first because he puts nothing online and does not have powerpoint. Fast forward one month into the semester and I can say that he is in fact quite brilliant and as long as you attend class and listen you can do good.
Murphy, was tough as hell and borderline cruel. He makes you work your ass of and sets insane standards. Prepare for an intense battle, but I strongly encourage you to take a class with Murphy. A class like this is not for the feign of heart.
I was taken aback by his teaching style at first, and wasn't sure I would enjoy the class... but in the end I found myself to have truly enjoyed the course thanks to his way of making the material interesting. He does not post notes online or use powerpoint so attending every class is a must but is totally worth it since he is extremely charismatic
Murphy is very good prof, he knows what he is talking about, he doesn't post anything online and also his handwriting is terrible to read, the format of his exams are quite different, he wants you to work for it. He is tough grader but he makes the subject fun to learn.
very difficult in the beginning but as the class progresses it becomes more enjoyable. the class material is difficult but he is a fair grader. slightly intimidating course but you learn lots.
Professor Murphy is a great prof. If you don't know your political science jargon and basic knowledge of politics, than I don't know if you would enjoy the class. Participation is what made his class so fun. He treats all of his students the same and keeps it professional. His lectures go fast but they are insightful. He's charming and likeable.
Dr. Murphy is a greater professor. He lectures are interesting and he makes an 80 minute class go by fast. Fair grader and makes sure students are well prepared for the midterm, paper, and final. Overall, great prof. Would recommend.
I enjoyed professor Murphy's class but I felt it to be a little intense for an introductory level course. He does not use PowerPoint, which I did not mind but his printing can be unreadable and his notes were not always clear in meaning. Overall he is a fair grader and made a dull class enjoyable.
Murphy is a fantastic prof who I would take again in a heartbeat. He's hilarious and makes a very difficult course a lot of fun. 10/10
Murphy is very respected and makes lectures fun and engaging. He draws mind maps which are really helpful if youre a visual learner, and he emphasizes key terms that you need to know later. Hes a great prof, would recommend
Murphy is a very engaging Professor, who is very enthusiastic about his course material which is reflected in his lectures. He is extremely helpful when it comes to elaborating on material that might not be clear, while encouraging critical thinking in the laid back atmosphere of his class. By far one of my favourite profs.
Murphy has an image problem as he comes off as dogged, self-righteous and preeminent. To add he also has a noticeable contempt for his students as he does not bother to make eye-contact, engage respectfully, or even learn names. Rather dismissive in his tone he can be unpleasant to deal with. Time for exams are purposely cut short to irk students.
hilarious! if anyone hates this guy they weren't paying attention cause he explains things clearly and with detail. Exams were okay and it was a spring class so it was harder to get reading done but 10/10 would recommend
The only way you won't like this professor is if you don't like material. Murphy is the only teacher that i could ever imagine teaching this course and is the reason why I continue to take it.
Dr. Murphys lectures are super engaging and he can truly make any class interesting. If you attend his lectures he goes through every topic with great detail and and sets you up for success on the tests, which are super fair and he gives you a list of key concepts to study beforehand. I would take any class if he was the one teaching it.
Very High expectations,
Took POLS 101 with Murphy as an online class. DO NOT DO THAT. Do not make the same mistake. There is an unreasonable amount of work every week (quizzes, modules, discussion posts, plus final exam and term paper). He grades the discussion posts so harshly as well and expects basically a paper with reference but will not say that explicitly. AVOID!!!
This guy is amazing best prof i´ve ever had would take him over and over again.
Loved him as a prof. He goes over readings with the class to make everybody understands it and will tell you exactly what you need to know and what you dont need to know which saves you the stress and headache. Definitely recommend him as a prof and hope to have more courses with him!
Word to the wise: DO NOT take this course online. It is unreasonably difficult and will make you want to pull your hair out. Weekly discussions (small papers defines it better), weekly quizzes, modules, and an agonizing term paper are just the start. He marks EXTREMELY hard. He's described to have good lectures but the online version is CUTTHROAT.
Honestly, I didn't do a single reading for 214 or 215 and I got an A- in both. He's an incredibly engaging prof. and a really interesting personality - could not imagine taking this class with any other prof. He talks really fast BUT he does repeat a lot of the key ideas so you know what matters. Useful to compare notes with friends too
Best prof I've ever had
Murphy's 214 is not an easy class, but if you do all the readings and take careful notes you'll do well. He's very knowledgeable about the texts and helped me out on the paper, which was much appreciated. However, he doesn't give you much room to criticize the texts, and you don't get to do discussions with classmates.
Murphy is the best lecturer I've ever had, might be the smartest. Can go off on tangents that eventually lead to not covering the full material of the class (St. Augustine / Thomas Aquinas) but assuming you go on to take POLS215 he'll go over it then. Highly recommend doing the readings but probably not necessary for exams, lenient with late papers
His class is definitely hard but I think that comes with the material that is taught. He is incredibly interesting to listen to and I cant imagine having any other prof for this course.
Fantastic lecturer. Had him during COVID, and helped students access lectures even in isolation. You are expected to read the textbook thoroughly, and if you listen to the lectures and keep notes, he pretty much gives you the whole course. Fair grader, and leaves very useful comments on coursework and papers.
Wow. This class makes me hate politics more than I did before. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE!!!!! His discussion posts are like papers, he literally said he does not give 100% on them and marks them harshly, oh and he admitted that his quizzes come from a test bank. I am often relying on google to understand concepts. Run far FAR away!!
I had him for POLS 214 and POLS 215. Although he is a tough grader, he is an effective teacher. He is engaging, passionate, and will do his best to make sure you understand the material. Read the material, focus on his repetitive points, and you'll be ok. Prepare for A LOT of writing. If your motto is C's get degrees, this is not the class for you
This is probably one of the toughest classes I've ever taken and the fact that it is a level 100 course is terrifying. Im in my third year and I cannot imagine taking it straight out of high school. Dr. Murphy, however, was available for meetings when I had questions which helped. Don't take this class if you want an easy A, or B, or C.
Dr. Murphy is a great lecturer. He's very thorough with course material and makes it fun/interesting. There is A LOT of writing in this course, id say in total I wrote over 12,000 words. Weekly discussion posts for half the semester and mini-essay/essay midterm and final. I loved the class, but it is hard.
Great prof, super interesting and really wants to see you do well and improve, as long as you show you're committed. There is a significant amount of work required but as long as you stay on track and keep up, his classes are very worth taking
amazing lectures! rather easy grader if you understand the lecture material. My fave prof! very long and difficult papers but very rewarding class overall!
Murphy is a fantastic lecturer and he makes the otherwise bland material interesting. There is so much writing in 214 and 215 though, so be prepared!
The chapter quizzes are directly related to the chapter readings and lectures, so you need to do your work. Discussion posts require you to explain concepts and identify connections, so put in effort and you will be successful. I found that he is open to providing feedback through email and his grading criteria is clear (he does not give 100%).
Dr. Murphy is a fantastic professor and easily the most effective lecturer I have experienced thus far at MacEwan. He is extremely knowledgeable of the material and provided extremely interesting insight about the books and their applications to current events. While he teaches a difficult course, the content and teaching make it well worth it.
One of the best profs I've had hands down. Made Poli science interesting and I would definitely take his class again.
A lot of discussion questions weekly, with a test every 2 weeks. Major 2000 word term paper based off ideologies wasn't too hard but took a long time. Very little contact between him and the class.
Relatively light workload. Don't take this course with him if you want an easy A or hate reading. Can be intimidating if you're in your first year. Never gives 100% on anything besides the M/C quizzes. Tough marker in the sense that he has high (but reasonable) expectations from his students. Polite, encouraging, and gives detailed feedback.
Took this course asynchronously it was set up very well and feedback was very constructive.
Don't skip any lectures, do the readings (before and after the lecture), write notes and show up. He eliminated the midterm and created 3 "mini midterms." In other words, there was more writing done than anticipated. He marks fairly if you engage in the readings. Use his thesis he provides the first day to structure the material. Google won't help
I only took this class as it was a requirement. Lectures were 2 hours long and very heavy on the information. There is ALOT of reading to be done to complete the discussions posts, the midterm, paper and final. He is picky when it comes to grading and even if you follow the guidelines there is always something more you could have added.
His guidelines for the discussion posts, paper, and exams were extremely vague as was his feedback, making it difficult to figure out what he was looking for. It's very very tough to get an A, even if you study very hard. Luckily his lectures and online notes are very helpful for understanding the readings.
