Yeah, so you think you wanna go into medical field? take this class and this teacher so you will know what real pain is... It is guarranteed you will take this class for a second time!!
very good professor....don't read the book....only study his notes and you will definitly pass his class.
This guy really knows his stuff but the 65% fail rate is evident in his class. You WILL take this class a second time but not because of the professor. The material he teaches is on a higher level than a master degree at UCLA.
He is great, he explains the material in deatil. He tells you what is going to be on the test, all you meed to do is just study the material. You do not need to read the book at all, just go to class and study the notes. GREAT PROFESSOR
He's a funny guy. You need a good backround in 333 to pass. Lots of people fail because THEY DON'T STUDY! Just study notes only and you'll get an A, B at the least. Keep up with the class though!!! It's not that bad!!! (I don't recommend him for 333)
Don't need to read the book, study his notes, do whatever he says, and you'll be fine. He is quite intimidating, but he's got a sense of humor. His tests are straightforward (just memorize your notes).
The class was tough, but you learn a lot. he really prepares you for the next class. the tests are fair (make sure you know your missing products). Study his notes, not the book. the tests and final comes straight from his notes so don't miss class.
Horrible professor!! The worst!.. Dont take him. Exams are very hard and the fail rate is extremely high in his classes. Very self-absorbed and cold. He's not helpful at all.
his tests are extreamly difficult. If you get the problem then you get all the points, if you dont get it, then you get NO points!
He's very clear about his expectations. Make sure he knows your name, and you will do fine. As always, study hard and listen in class.
He is a great teacher who knows organic chemistry to its core. Test are directly from lecture notes, you dont even need your book. Always there for his students and has a great sense of humor. If you want to really learn o chem take him, not an easy A but very possible. Memeorize his notes!!!!
Great professor. EXTREMELY neat and organized notes. Easy A if you are able to reproduce your notes. Questions on exam are EXACTLY from the notes especially structures you need to draw. Make sure you buy diff. colored pens and copy his notes exactly as he writes it on the board.
STAY AWAY!! Accent was very thick, and tests were very difficult.
Very nice and organized professor! When he teaches, you know that he knows his stuff, unlike some professors who can't go from their own notes to the board without make some stupid mistake (collins). Dr. Melikyan is a little intiminating but he is the definition of perfection! Tough but good! A+++
Has a thick accent so its very unclear as to what he says. You can study for hours and hours, and think that u did good on an exam, however he does not believe in partial points and will mark the answer wrong even if there is a minor miscalculation. Very very hard!!!!
he is a stuck up teacher who thinks no one knows more than he does ... and that is why he makes student's life miserable by his misleading test reviews or lectures...
this teacher is okay,he teaches good and clear, also his accent is not bad. but his grading suck big time, he take s point off for no reason so make sure to memeorise all the deatels or u get lots of point off. like him cuse i learned for the 1st time ochem. reccomend but beware.
very hard teacher ...unhelpfull... and make you feel stupid ... his tests are hrad and he only accept his methods of solving. even if you used the book he would not take ... very rude and stcuck up. to all student.
he explains the material really well...however VERY stingy on partial credit, must do it EXACTLY like he does. I would wait to take this class with another professor
Ochem is a tough class!Despite of what people say about him, he is the best prof I have ever had. His notes are very helpful, make sure to memorize the mechanisms. Do ochem everyday for at least 1-2 hours. Even though, he's a hard grader, you will learn a lot. Very encouraging. He's tough because the real world isn't easy.
Ok, he'll stop and answer questions, unlike other professors in the dept. exams come off or lecture and a bit of book stuff (certain exam q's are hw questions.) he's organized, which helps and knows his stuff. but the class is hard..
hes an awesome professor...his tests r hard but he tells u xactly whats gonna be on them...if u wanna learn OChem hes the person who can actually teach it to u...highly recommended!!!
u cry babys thst complain u should of study, he is very nice professor and has office hours, he will give you review exam befor the tests, u have to study and do HM some questions are from HM. you would learn in class, he is better than alll other Ochem teachers.cherrrrioooo
The best Organic Chemistry teacher you will have. He teaches such a difficult subject in the easiest ways possible. You still have to put a LOT of time and effort studying especially his notes. I can't imagine someone getting lower than a B if they study the notes VERY WELL. Also very helpfull during office hours.
May seem intimidating, but really great instructional style! He tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Just show up and take good notes.
the best teacher i've ever had. melikyan is awesome!
he is very clear in class. He will also go over old meterial to help u understand. Precise and concise, so be very carefull on the exam. Like many said, he is very stingy with points. He accepts top notch students and will help those who try hard.
Good teacher, Intimidating, but concerned with student's actually learning the material.
Very proffessional, organized, typical/excellent example of a college professor. Explains very well and encourages students to ask questions. Tries to explain the material until we all get it. Tests are hard though. Need to practice your ass off for the tests. Two midterms and a final, that's it! Might curve, depending on the class.
He is the terminator with a Miam Vice wardrobe.
Tests are from the notes, explains everything clearly.
Hard class. Ok professor. Very picky. His tests are from notes;however, they can be tricky. Gotta do ALL hw's assigned from the book. Only 1 exam and 1 ununnounced quiz for the semester + final which is 50% of the grade. Won't recommend.
Just dont...
You have to know all the notes by heart and attend all the lectures and don't ask question while he's talking. You're garanteed to get an A! One midterm, one unannounced quiz and a final. Good luck guys ;)
took the class over the summer. this is organic chemistry for dummies y'all. easy class. easy A. you know why? coz dr. melikyan teaches and explains very well.
A very hard grader! Expects you to pay attention to the smallest detail, otherwise, he may deduct, at least, half of the points of the question. Tests are very fair and straight-forward. No "curveballs". The man is a genious!!!!!! Knows everything there is to know about Chem, so no point in arguing with him about anything. I got a C in summer.
This guy is really genious!!! I took this class over the summer, and Dr. Melikyan made the hard subject very clear and understandable!! take him! The best chem teacher in CSUN. His tests very streight forward, nothing surprizing but he is really hard grader. He explains the material very well, so on the tests Dr. Melikyan expects you to know it.
WOW this man is a genius, i wish i had him for 333 also. if you can understand and learn in his class and get a B or above you are a wanna be premed, prephram, or prewhatever. Whoever finishes his class without learning and interest must be stupid. Its not a free A but its not immposible like other professors
Very good instructor, with the worse attitude that I have ever seen. DO NOT expect him to happily answer any of your Qs.But what the heck, he is the best for chem 334.
Great teacher, he knows his stuff and unlike others he can teach whatever he knows, if u fail his class u had to be trying to fail it and ur a moron
Great teacher explain very clearly! Just study his lecture notes inside out!
bad grader, bad class average, good teaching style.
stay away...im not joking...horrible tests. you have no idea what he will put on his exams...you must know everything inside out!
Oh my this class was insane!! He's such a tough grader. Tests are so damn hard. You practically have to memorize his notes. Love him, hate his exams and grading style.
Don’t believe anyone that says Melikyan is a n easy A. this Is a lie. It’s a very hard class He reminds me of a arrogant Armenian Ben Stine. He is burnt out of teaching 333 and would rather just teach graduate classes and do research for his books he always talks about. In my opinion he should stay in the lab to cure cancer and out of the classroom
hardest class i have ever taken, two tests: the midterm and the final, that's it! no way too improve your grade if you have a horrible test.
Great professor, teaches really well, everything is clear, but...only a midterm and a final, thats it for your grade. You mess up on the midterm, game over for your grade. Exams are his notes basically, but practice helps a lot too because you need to know the material. Study notes, do HW and practice practice practice. Then you will succeed.
Some people forget that its organic chemistry and blame the teacher for everything. Yes the class is hard and so is the subject but is it doable? Absolutely! I did not read the book at all I studied (when i say studied that means actually understood the concepts and did not just stare at the notes) for a whole week before his test and passed well.
Explains very well. Yes he has two test, but I personally prefer it that way. Think of it like this you dont have to take a test every 3 weeks stressing on a each test. So you have a midterm and a Final. You can not fall behind in this class. Overall very good professor. Just take good notes and do the HW.
Start studying at the beginning of the semester. Once new material comes in, do problems and master it! If you dont, you will fail the first midterm, guaranteed!!! Memorize, you will fail. Look at notes, you will fail. Look at notes and do problems in the book from what he goes over in the notes, you will succeed. Simple right? Hey I got an A.
You will learn so much from this guy. Your brain will hurt from cramming it with information. Melikyan is both very interesting and very clear. His exams are VERY hard and he offers little to no curve in the class so it is very possible to work your a$$ of and still end up with a B or C. According to pick a prof, only 6% A's, 17% Bs, 40% F's.
This is Organic Chem so the professor better know his stuff. And he sure does. He is incredibly difficult if you do not study or attend his class. DO THE STUDY QUESTIONS THAT HE ASSIGNS. Don't memorize; understand instead.
Such an arrogant man, i cannot describe how much. teaches like youre in the russian army. the tests are wayyy too difficult. I got the question right on the test and he gave me no points because i used a different solving method. yes he knows his stuff, but come on this man is not a teacher. Beware! you WILL fail unless you are a kiss up!
This review is for those looking for a straight forward prof and not an easy A etc. He gives crystal clear notes and straight forward tests w/problems taken from H/W. He has high standards but is willing to help you rise to them. You will learn a lot and have no excuse for not getting an A if you work for it.Study notes and text. He's not arrogant.
EASY EASY tests! But probably the hardest grader i ever encountered! So in a sense the tests are hard! In the end i am glad i took him, I loved his teaching style, i wish i had him for 334!
The best OCHEM professor at CSUN. This guy can teach and his tests are hard but fair.
Best professor I have ever had! I wish i had him for 334. He explains VERY well, he tells you his expectations VERY well. so, all you have to do is spend time and study what he tells you. True, he is a tough grader, but hey, he told you exactly what he is looking for. I definitely recommend him.
Easy teacher. Easy class. Easy tests. Easy A
Amazing professor! I took him for Chem 333 during the summer and will not take Chem 334 with anyone else but him. Organic chemistry is a tough subject but he made it enjoyable and understandable. Very fair and approachable.
The BEST Chem professor on CSUN. He is extremely intelligent and professional. The material itself is not simple, but his lectures are CRYSTAL clear, and he makes it absolutely clear what he expects to see on exams. Make sure you do the reading, its helpful as well as interesting. It feels really good to get an A in a difficult course.
The best! One of the few good chemistry professors at CSUN. The Chem department needs to hire more people like him.
Very high maintenance class. Do the homework problems from the beginning and prepare yourself for challenging exam questions. Unfortunately the grade distribution is between two midterms and one final, so do not fall behind or you will cram and you will fail. Melikyan is a genius and he makes it clear what you need to learn.
He's the master of organic chemistry. You'll learn a lot from him. He's also extremely professional, very intelligent, and, although he has high standards, he is fair (A quality many instructors lack, I might add). His expectations are high, but they are within the realm of reason. Just study and don't whine about the work. Have fun heheheh >:D.
From my point of view he is someone who is not only not approachable but way too cocky. He makes his class become your only obligation in your life if you want too pass. He is not reasonable by any means when it comes to grading. Even if you got it right and he marked it wrong, its wrong. I personally did not enjoy this class with him AT ALL.
I think some people went into this class thinking it would be easy because of some of the reviews here. It's o chem. There's no mercy, and this prof absolutely does not empathize with students, but at least he's crystal clear, so it is very possible to get an excellent grade. Just be prepared to work hard, and don't feel too badly if you fail.
I'm in the summer section now. You know this guy is hard if 1/2 the class is full of smart kids who are home on break from their ivy league schools/UCs and still the average on the 1st test was 67%. The sample exam that's on the website is misleading - the real test was WAY harder. Takes points off if he doesn't like your drawing. Nice guy tho.
Incredibly hilarious and brilliant man! I learned a great deal from this class. Granted, he's not the easiest of professors, but he is extraordinarily helpful and engages his students. His office hour meetings were very rewarding! Take this course if you want a sound foundation in university-level composition.
I'm annoyed enough at the crybabies reviewing here to give my 2 cents. Ochem is not an easy class, but Dr. M makes it super clear that you have to try really hard to not get at least a "B" in his classes. It doesn't matter what school you go to - I've gone to both UC & CSU. Do homework (multiple times) and study his notes, and you'll be fine.
Yes it's Ochem, yes it's hard. Talking to students in a condescending and domineering manner will DEFINITELY not make things easier, which is exactly what this professor does. Very unapproachable and egotistic, good luck with it...
He is probably the most intelligent professor in the faculty. His standards are very high but they're doable. He might come off as cocky but hes helpful. Lectures are very clear, organized and detailed, so expect a detailed exam. Do every single hw problem. Grade is based on 1 midterm & 1 final- Don't fall behind, you WILL fail.
arrogant, unhelpful professor. One of the worst if not the worst Chem prof at the school . Take anyone else but him and you will succeed. Does not care about his students at all.
Probably the most succinct and clear of the CSUN o-chem professors. Teaches the material slowly and has crystal-clear notes. However, the fact that your grade consists of only two exams (40 pt midterm + 60 pt final) can make the course a bit nerve-wracking.
Keep In Mind: Organic Chemistry is Tough Subject!!!! With that said, Melikyan is the best Chemistry teacher @ CSUN!! His lectures are clear & concise. There's a midterm & a final. He curves depending on class average. Tests are hard but Fair. You won't see anything that wasn't a HW problem or gone over in class. I'll take him again for 334!
Prof.Melikyan is an excellent instructor. There is only one midterm and one final which may seem intimidating but as long as you do all the homework and come to class and take good notes and study study study you will be fine. Melikyan is very strict and blunt but he knows his stuff and does a great job. The class itself is very difficult no matter who you take it with and requires alot of study and dedication
Professor Melikyan is brilliant. He knows how to teach, it's like pure art with him. You will not leave the class room with any questions. I loved his class.
He is a phenomenal professor, he really makes sure that you understand the content, I took his class a couple years ago and until today remember the main ideas and concepts, which have been very helpful in taking standardized tests for professional schools. If you are willing to work in his class, you will learn a lot!
Very arrogant and unprofessional. When some students were late to lecture because they had lab right before the class, he began to lock the doors. He also mumbled through that entire lecture and it was the most heavily represented on the final. I thought that was extremely unprofessional. He couldn't control his emotions.
Very tough instructor but very knowledgeable about the subject material. Perhaps too challenging for non Chem majors. Interesting research work and seminars from this professor. Recommendation of light class load (GE) course material in conjunction with taking this class. Huge emphasis on lecture material, so show up on time and ready to take notes
Fantastic professor. The ONLY way you could possibly not do well in his class is by ignoring everything he says all semester. He tells you what will be on the exam, he is crystal clear with the material, and the tests are 99% from homework problems. The people giving bad reviews are just bad students.
He is a very good professor. His teaching method is one of the best. He tells you what will be on the exams. The only bad thing I have to say is that he gives NO partial credit at all during exams which makes a great difference on one's grade. He does seem to change his exam styles every semester though.
Extremely arrogant and rude. Talks down to students and isnt willing to go out of his way to help them. I got an A in the class but doing every single problem in the book MULTIPLE times.
O chem is hard. This professor makes it even harder with his strict grading.no multiple choice so have you to to reproduce everything he teach you and gave in notes.Take the class seriously and do homework twice.i got A s in both general chem, but I ended up in C in this class.Be prepared for this class, very easy to mess up.
This professor is extremely picky. I would not take another class with him. Found him to be incredibly unfair with his grading.
What can I say, Ochem is probably one of the hardest classes I've taken. His lectures can be confusing at times but he was helpful. He can be rude and stubborn at times but can be very motivating and humorous. Luckily of the two classes he taught, he chose our class to have multiple choice questions on the exams which helped A LOT. Study, study....
Very difficult class. He's not a great lecturer and he leaves you pretty unprepared for tests. It's all free response yet he doesn't give extra credit which is ridiculous. Orgo is hard, but he made it harder with his rigorous grading. I had to study my butt off and use clutch prep to get a decent grade. Don't take him if you don't have to.
Horrible professor! 2 exams in the summer 50 pts each (50%). makes it impossible to pass bc the entire grade solely depends on those exams. free response but if he doesn't like your answer he won't give you any points. very unfair and unreasonable...AVOID!!
WORST PROF EVER!!!!!!!!! thats all i have to say. do yourself a favor and take a different professor so 1. you can actually learn ochem and 2. be able to pass to pass the class with a reasonable grade.
only cares about his research and not so much about his students. Not very helpful during office hours. he should concentrate more on teaching rather than bragging about his research that won't help during exams.
only 2 tests. no extra credit. most of his problems are from the homework and lecture notes. not recommended. mostly talks about his research group and it seems like he doesn't care about his students. Be on time and try to seat in front.
I have a HUGE respect for this professor. He knows everything about organic chemistry, granted, he is a hard professor and the tests are hard, but all you need to do is ask questions if you don't understand something! He's super helpful during his office hours! DO ALL OF THE HW PROBLEMS ASSIGNED GUARANTEE A B IN THE CLASS!
He only has 1 midterm and a final which can hurt you if you do bad on the first test. His lectures are simple and easy to follow but can be confusing if you're not paying attention. DO THE PROBLEMS IN THE BOOK. DO THEM OVER AND OVER AGAIN. His tests were straight from them and were pretty easy if you put the time in.
I got B for both chem 333 and 334. you can find the book online for free and download it. one midterm one final. there is optional HW. some of the exam's questions are from HW and his lecture. need to study hard. he offers few hard extra credit questions during the class time and you need to write the answer on the board!! he curves m
Had him for both Ochem I and Ochem II. Skip class, you fail. He utilizes every single part of the board, so try to sit close. Take a RED, BLUE, GREEN, and BLACK pen to class. He color codes everything which helps your brain understand the material more. It's an upper div class so you have to put in work, ignore the reviews of the failures below.
Will you pass? Yes. Will you understand Organic Chemistry? No
His notes are golden. He is very respectable and his dry humor makes the class more entertaining. Overall, great lecturer. 2 exams 1st 40 points 2nd 60. Final is mostly new material. so you can't mess up. The final had 3 point questions which means 3 percent of your grade. if you think he's the "hardest Ochem professor ever" then your gonna fail.
Tough class. But Dr. Melikyan hands down is the most inspirational professor I have ever had.
I got an A in his class and the only way was because I always did the homework problems he assigned in the back of the book! I did them over and over, also I had to read outside of his lecture because he goes fast. Read chapter before class so you're not lost but definitely easier than expected!
The best, the best, the best! You will not regret Dr. Melikyan, I had him for both 333 and 334 and got a B in both. His lectures are out of this world, he knows pKa values memorized for compounds in his head. Don't take anyone else and just listen to me.
The best just take him you won't regret it.
THE BEST PROFESSOR IVE HAD so funny such a good lecturer his lectures are so clear and organized tests so fair and he tell you what's going to be on the exam. It is a hard class and I got a C but it was bc I didn't study, not bc of him. TAKE HIM HES THE BEST OCHEM PROFESSOR I AM NOW REALIZING THIS AFTER TAKING ANOTHER PROFESSOR
The BEST Organic Professor you can have in the whole University. His notes are CRYSTAL CLEAR, he will not test on anything else besides the lecture and also do some of the homework problems assigned, that will help. Ochem II is tough but with perseverance you can get an A. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Melikyan and with him, you will definitely succeed.
The Best Professor ever
He is the best science professor ever! I have never seen a professor giving that clear lecture to students. Of course, you have to put enough time to succeed in this class. Remember! this is not a regular 3 unit class like communication 101. Doing HW once is not enough to get an A. Do them at least twice to achieve A
Honestly would of not passed if it wasnt for Melikyan. He simplies O chem. Dont get me wrong O chem is tough and I hate it but he is fair with his grading. Definitely do the problems in the book and youll be fine
His lectures are crystal clear. Ive heard horror stories about ochem before taking it and it ended up being my favorite subject, thanks to Dr. Melikyan. I even ended up becoming a tutor for ochem after taking his class due to how easy/enjoyable he had made the material for us. Easy A if you keep up with the material and do the homework problems
Brilliant personality and great teacher. Test are not hard but are multiple choice and only two tests make up the final grade for the course. He has fine humor for the ones that can actually understand his jokes. Overall a nice class.
Felt like I started to get the hang of this class toward the very end! Not very approachable guy, I felt kind of intimidated by him, he is too smart! If you get a C or below on the midterm it will be very hard or impossible to get an A in the class. I kind of felt like I had to teach myself the subject.
such a brilliant man. his lectures were golden. everything you need to know is discussed during lecture and recitation... 1 test 1 final, all multiple choice. very caring for his students and always pauses to see if anyone has any questions. do the examples from class and recitation and the problems from the book and you'll do well.
It's super easy to get a B on this class, and super hard to get an A. He doesn't care about the students, he cares more about his research and his accomplishments. A lot of people like him because he is easy to pass organic chemistry, just do the book problems, recitation problems, and problems from previous years that he give out.
Being a strait A student, this class ruined me both in terms of gpa and mental health. Lectures are fast, making it hard to understand while presenting. There is no slide use or access to canvas either. The entire class is based on 3 tests, two 30 points and 40 point final, and the questions on the test are extremely hard. He does curve however.
He is really old fashioned. Everything is wrote on board, and students must catch up. No stretching, no gum, no drinks, or food in class. Cares more about his research than his students. Acts as if everyone in the class wants to be nutritionists. There is a curve, but only 3 tests (100 points) makes up the grade. He is helpful during office hours.
LOVE this professor!! He explains the concepts really well and is super funny while doing it. He's also very willing to meet after class and if you go to office hours he remembers your name and really helps you out. HIGHLY recommend. I did the book problems twice and went to his office hours almost every week and got an A.
I would never take this professor again. He was good at explaining the material, but you are graded only on two multiple choice exams. I took him in summer along with Chem 333 because I thought the information was fresh in my mind. I read the book, re-wrote all my notes, and did the assisgned problems but it still didn't help with the exam.
Here is the deal... the man is a genius. Unfortunately, most geniuses are gifted at their subject but not at explaining it. He is highly respected and accomplished individual but his class is tough. Class is graded upon 3 tests and homework is optional but necessary to be prepared for the exams. The homework sets take many hours to fully complete.
Melikyan is an incredible professor, so it is important to use him as a resource. I'm NOT GOOD at chemistry, but I got an A because I made sure I understood what he was saying before I left class every day. I stopped him to ask questions, and I went to office hours when I needed to. He also cracked me up literally every class. Man is a gem.
I did not like how he grades students, he cares more about his curve rather than being fair. He rounded up 6% for students from a B to an A but he did not round me one point from a C to a B , thats not fair. Don't recommend, everyone just has his tests and memorizes them, if you actually want to learn take a different Professor.
Decent professor. Explains things too fast and not clear all the time. But if you put in the effort you will be okay. Said inappropriate things to me during office hours, ridiculed me about attending community college and wasn't helpful at all. Reported him to student affairs. Avoid if possible. Please speak up about bad professors.
Dr. Melikyan is a decent professor, loved that he wrote everything out instead of teaching off slides. But he is rude, impatient, and dislikes students who have a hard time understanding. Main reason i would say to try to avoid him is because he makes his grading scale ridiculous. 90-94% is a B. You'll be fine if you have to take him though.
Pros: multiple choice tests Cons: monotone and boring lectures, class is only based off 3 tests (100 points total), extreme rule follower, can be rude to students I can see how people like him, but I had a very hard time paying attention to lectures because of teaching style. Missed passing by 2 points. I highly recommend avoiding if possible.
3 cumulative MC tests are all the class is graded on. Does not upload lectures afterward. It is ochem so it is obviously hard and you have to put a lot of time in. The only reason I managed to get a B was because the tests were multiple choice. Take with caution.
He is real smart. So smart that he forgets were barely learning this subject for the first time. He was always condescending and hated when people interrupted his teaching flow with a question. The manner is which he teaches isnt ideal. He quickly presents a topic and expects you to get it for the most part. Multiple choice saved me. DONT TAKE
Focused on his class the whole semester and spent hours and hours studying just to fail, his ineffective teaching style, grading criteria (3 exams ONLY), and his unhelpful behavior resulted in A GOOD LOT of the class failing even though everyone was studying hard, don't take him unless you want to fail, he had no mercy despite the super low average
This class is super hard but the professor makes it manageable. No homework only three midterms. Multiple choice on exams. If you have to take o chem then take it with Melikyan!
Great Professor! Lectures are clear. Exam are a bit hard. Overall, good experience!
He basically gives you most of the exam questions (assigned homework problems). Grade is based on 3 exams, all multiple choice. I'm taking him again next semester for 334, would recommend!
Yes, this guy is a jerk. His attitude is poor and he thinks he is hot stuff for being a research professor at CSUN of all places. But if you need a straightforward lecturer with exam questions practically take from the book, take him. It was really easy to do well in his class. Just don't expect to be inspired.
It is very important for you one attend class in order to pass. The grading is only based off of 3 exams, but sometimes he throws extra credit discussions in class and always try to work with you when you actually explain yourself to him. He's also evidently passionate about organic chemistry and is always willing to reword what he says in class
After failing ochem 1 the first time with a different professor, I found that the way professor melikyan teaches really works with me. he tries to ensure everyone has an understanding an makes time for questions in his lectures. His grading is only based off of 3 exams, so be sure to do well but i enjoyed his teaching and he was very understanding
I had failed ochem 333 the first time with a different professor, and after hearing about Professor Melikyan's teachings I wanted to try him out. He's by far the best professor for Ochem, he does have a very old school teaching style with no powerpoints but I appreciate it a to. His class is based on 3 exams and its exactly what he teaches!
If you have ADHD and require structure to get things done do not take this class! Homework is not graded so it's easy to brush it off. He does not provide powerpoint notes so you have to copy the board. Personally it's hard to pay attention when I have to focus on writing everything correctly. Also the grade is based ONLY on 3 exams
The professor lectured well but what scared me the most is the lack of academic opportunities. Honestly would rather take a different professor instead and was not a fan of his test format. Take a different professor instead of you want to learn more.
Very old school style of teaching. Everything is written on a whiteboard, no PowerPoints and no Canvas page. He explains OChem concepts well and takes time to answer questions from students during class. Tests are all multiple choice, and you're graded on 3 exams and discussion attendance. There's no homework that's graded, but don't brush it off!
Melikyan is a challenging but rewarding professor. His old-school teaching style takes some adjustment, but his clear lectures and exam-focused curriculum are effective. Unstuck Study AI and the textbook are essential tools to succeed.
Took him for both 333 and 334, I can say I do understand the bad reviews, very old fashioned, no canvas only communicates through email,&it can be difficult to tell if he is joking at times, but he knows his chemistry, class is graded by 3 exams, wouldnt suggest him if your not a good test taker, but the questions are all from of the book questions.
Stay as far away as possible. Thick accent and constantly mumbles. Does not use the textbook at all. No slides, no help. Adds no context to anything he "teaches," so the rest is all on you. 3 tests; that's it. Sure, he's knowledgeable in organic chemistry, but that doesn't mean he can teach. Take someone else, seriously. Would rate 0 if I could.
Overall he does his best, but ochem is hard. His tests were pretty difficult as they are multiple choice so either you get the right answer or you don't, unfortunately no partial credit which I'd rather have. And some of his test questions I had never seen the material before. I took Charonnat for 333 and I would recommend him over Melikyan.
His lectures are not enough to get all the content down. I used Pearson+ Organic chem channel to get extra info and practice which helped a TON. I did all the HW he assigned to make sure I get the practice I needed. His study guide on top of that prepares you well for the exams. Take Ochem seriously and be prepared before you walk into class.
Dr. Melikyan is definitely old school with his lecture style, but it helped me learn because he was engaging and motivated us to take good notes. It's a commitment, def spend several hours each week to review material and do textbook problems. His sample exams also helped. Grade is based on 3 MC exams (31 pts ea, no curve) + 7 pts for discussion.
He is good enough at teaching the material; he taught it in a weird order that made it hard to understand some concepts in the 1st half. His exams are all MCQ and he loves to reuse past exam questions. Which is good since the questions are pretty hard and he does not curve. His grade scale is atrocious with an A being almost impossible (91%-100%).
I think he is the best Organic Chemistry professor at CSUN. I've had others, but none explain the material as clearly or effectively. His lectures are well organized, easy to follow, and fit any level of understanding. If you're pre-health or preparing for exams that include O-Chem (like the MCAT or DAT), take this as your sign to choose him!
Do not take this professor. His class is on a opposite curve. A 91 and up is an A and he does not CURVE!! regardless if the class has an average of a FAIL. do not take this guy he is impossible, your not allowed to have any electronic devices and you do not get partial credit for anything. Half the class fails.
Exams are not easy, must know the material well or have previous exams and understand the material from those to do well. He does explain the material well and dumbs it down significantly. He is good at clarifying anything confusing and provides extra credit opportunities that can increase your grade (auctions).
Lecture heavy material and if you are in the discussion, it will help you be better prepared for the exam. Discussion helps your grade by a bit but it's mostly for him to go through textbook problems that will be seen on the exam. Highly recommend reviewing assigned textbook questions and getting tutoring at LRC.
Thick accent, hard to understand people take him for his "easy exams" but they are not. He doesn't teach well even when he tries to simplify things hes bad at explaining chemistry to those who aren't majoring in it. Any criticism is met with passive aggression. Tutoring is no help. If you don't sweat and bleed you won't succeed.
Bruh i get his A grading range sucks but no one talks ab how he has a built in curve for Cs (61-75) & Bs 76-90. Hes aight. TBH I was pretty confused every lecture but went to tutoring, talked to ppl in the class (talk to the ones retaking!), and watched a bunch of yt vids and got a B. Hes not the best but hes not the worst. Lock in twinammon roll
bro ok this is my 2nd rating but i had to add smth. dude whoever took this class Fall 25, why the freak was there so many uhh special people iykwim in our class. like dude holy yap some of them would just go on & on about they cat or smth mid lecture. anyways its a hard class u need to lock in but when u finally understand it u feel so happy trust
Ochem 2 is definitely hard and demanding. Keep up with the lectures by rewriting notes and understanding the mechanisms. Make time for the homework assigned and do it. LRC tutoring was a huge help. If you got Ochem 1 down pretty good, this class should be a breeze. His lecture notes, HW, and exam study guides are pretty similar to exam questions.
This is my 2nd time doing ochem, and this prof is better than my previous one. Ochem is hard, and you need to study a lot. You have only three exams, and they're all multiple-choice. Yes, he does reuse questions, but he doesn't rely on them heavily because he may add material you've never seen before. Overall, I will retake him because it's easier
Melikyan is a great professor. He has harsh reviews because you only get graded on exams, and he doesn't curve, but he truly wants you to understand the material. He shows everything on the board, doesn't use canvas, but I really liked that because he goes at a great pace. He always asks if you have questions, and he's helpful during office hours.
He doesn't post lectures on canvas so if you miss a lecture you're cooked. He also writes the lecture notes by hand so the notes are very unorganized. He is also not very helpful. If you go to him for help you need to have a very specific question or he's gonna keep asking you "what is not clear".
