Awful Professor doesnt try to help anyone, and gets annoyed by everyone, def wouldnt take

She is very nice and helpful. if you come to class on time and do allthe speeches you can get an A+. Her final was everything she lecture which wasn't alot. take her. Easy class to Boost GPA

Nice lady, really knowledgable. teaches you how to give a good speech. 1 three minute story about you, one 4-5min informative speech,one 7-8 persuasive speech and a group speech and an improv speech. gives you the grade you deserve
make sure you do the outline the way she says its a big part of your grade if you hit all points on outline easy A. Watch out though the finals a pain
i dreaded taking speech, then I got Grannon and it really wasn't so bad. just follow the outline format she gives u in the beginning of the semester to a T. DONT LOSE IT! know your speech, do your best and you will get the grade you deserve. gives constructive criticism. LISTEN. and youll do fine. study for the final!

I don't know what everyone's talking about. Shes not a tough grader! I had her at 8:30 AM & i didn't really mind. her classes are interesting & they aren't bad at all. she's such a sweet heart too. just take her...
ugh. she can be annoying. and will ask if anyone has any questions, then be rude to you if you ask one. the classes were really boring, and speech is like, her life. but all around if you just do the work you'll get a B. she grades speeches tougher than you'd think. if you can't get any better than her, just stick with her.
She's hard, she'll work you, and though it seems like it's not fun or she may seem unfair, in the end (retrospect) she's good - if you really want to become a better speaker or like a little challenge, go with her. I thought she was a little ridic, but she actually ended up to be a nice person willing to help, though i knew how to speak already.
if you are as nervous and anxious as i am, to the point where you feel like ur going to puke, don't take her. it's very nervewracking. she's decent but can be a bit rude and takes some things seriously. i wouldn't take her again to be straight forward. i'd definitely choose another professor
She would definitetly prepare you to be a very good speaker. She would also give you a lot of work. She is also a tough grader. However, I recommend her for those that will be taking speech.

She started off really nice, but she got meaner and worse as it went on. Often unclear. The structure of the class is very unbalanced. It started with just lectures then all speeches. I was working on 2 speeches at once! There is a final. Easy A, for me, though. I just did the work, came in regularly, which is mandatory, and got an A.
WONDERFUL PROFESSOR! 4 or 5 speeches throughout the class, and an easy final exam (she tells you what you need to know). She is very sweet and very helpful. She gives a lot of feedback so you know what to improve on next time. Just do what she says, practice your speeches and you'll be fine
Make sure you do the reading prior to class, prepare for speeches without fillers and hand in work on time. She does not deal with poor excuses. She's helpful as long as you don't wait last minute and follow her directions to a T. Do the work and follow her guidelines - A guaranteed. I did!
I personally did not like this class. she is alright but kinda boring, she has favorites in class and attendance is very important being late will cost you even if it is just about 2 minutes. final test is not hard but you should keep note of what she emphasizes when review the book.
Professor Gai in my opinion was great. I was beyond nervous when I found out I had to take speech but I was relieved when I finally met her. She is a somewhat tough grader but only because she has expectations set for each speech but she does gives you all the info you need for the speeches. You can tell she is very passionate about teaching.
The class itself is nothing to be concerned about. If you enjoy being treated like you are still in high school and following pointless guidelines and a plethora of redundant assignments then this is the professor for you! If you would rather be regarded as an adult and learn in an comprehensive way, for the love of god, FIND A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
Shes tough on you. If you want to become a better speaker she will give you the grade you earned and is very strict with her rules. Come prepared on speech day if not, she will be frustrated and puts you on spot in front of class. She is very sweet. Has a final term paper, hit every question that is asked and you will get a 100 i promise.
Public speaking is not my strong suit, and she made it clear to the class that I'm bad. I've tried my hardest and contstantly tried to improve, but it didn't work much. Persuasive speech was a disaster and informative was marginally acceptable. Wish she would be a little more lenient with the students that have trouble with stage fright.

She makes speech class a nightmare & grades like a monster. I once gave a speech she said it was perfect, but took 15 points off bc my legs were crossed.
Professor Grannon knows what she is doing and will teach you well if you pay attention and show up. It's pretty generic information, but if you miss class with her you will be very behind. She doesn't play games with troublemakers in class so if you are a class clown don't expect her to like you. It's a lot of writing and rewriting in class.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Had her my freshman year, she counted you late if you walked in to class at 8:01 when class started at 8. She doesn't care if its a morning class and it takes forever with traffic or finding parking. If you get a flat? get proof of a flat from a tow truck or some bs. Her exams were very easy though
Prof. Grannon was pretty tough, she would just not give me an A for anything! All my speeches were B's & I got a B in the class which isn't bad. She just is very specific & wants the best speeches. I was never the greatest public speaker so the grade wasn't horrible. Dont be late to class! She will put a late mark next to your name even after 2mins
Professor Grannon did nothing for me. Her lectures were long and not helpful at all. She tried to teach us how to good public speakers but then graded our speeches like we were already professionals. She gave me a 8/20 on a speech that a spent a week and a half preparing, and to be honest I thought I did well on it. OVERALL DO NOT TAKE
don't ever take this class. you not gonna understand anything. you have to work hard for everything. there is an extra credit but plus strick rules
great professor, makes you work and achieve good results. Love her speech, she sounds like an actress - highly recommend taking this class with her!

This class was very easy. The longest speech was at most 7-8 minutes and she gives great feedback. BUY THE BOOK. She lectures very quickly from the book (but the book is common sense). Overall, I found that if you do the work, and kind of know what you're doing in front of the class, you'll get an A. Prof. Grannon is very theatrical so be aware.
Rudest professor I ever encountered. On the first day she told us if we didn't like her, we should drop the class. I regret not doing so. Terrible lady. She is super hard to approach and will scold you for useless reasons. She did give good feedback-- otherwise: DONT TAKE.
Make sure you keep track of your lates, if you're even one second late she'll stop mid-lecture to mark it down. The class isn't too difficult, but the lectures are a bit boring. She's very specific about what she's looking for in your speeches, so just make sure you're prepared and do everything she asks, especially on the final paper. Buy the book
Professor Grannon was tough, but informative. She made sure her grading rubrics were easy to understand so you knew what she was asking of you when it came time to say your speech. She goes over all the chapters you will need for each speech in the few weeks preparing for them. She gets back to you quickly when emailed and give grades back fast.
Heres the thing. If you switch into this class in the week were you can drop classes, she will mark you absent for missing the first day. She is a tough grader and rather rude. She takes attendance very seriously and her lectures are boring. BUT her organization is very good with the rubric and outlines. I honestly wouldn't take her again.
Lots of Homework Lecture Heavy Participation Matters
She can be very dry, but has her better moments. She is very strict with attendance, so I wouldn't take her if youre prone to skipping. I would not say she is a tough grader, I put together most of my speeches a day or two before and always got A's. You will need the book, although we didn't have tests she will mention things in class.
She is okay. Attendance is mandatory and buying the books isn't fully necessary but will help you with the course. She is strict with grading speeches, she will pick on everything you do and say. She won't hesitate to mark you late, you will need a doctor's note. Your speeches have to be from your head, you cannot read it.
She is nice and knows what she is talking about, but if you are not as comfortable speaking in public I would say to look for a different professor. What she expects for each speech is so specific and stressful at times, and the criteria for the final group speech is incredibly stressful and excessive. I heard other professor expect a lot less.
She knows the topic very well. She gives specific instructions you know exactly what is expected from you. But she is extremely sarcastic and can come off as rude. If anything she made me more anxious about speaking in front of the class because I was nervous to mess up. I do not recommend if you bad anxiety she will just make it worse.
Took Professor Grannon in my spring semester at MSU and I have to admit, she was a really good professor! she grades by a few things, 3 speeches, a paper of a live speaker you have to attend and a final exam but if you participate you will do fine, and attendance is mandatory, skip and you won't pass, or being late. The worst professor you could take at msu for speech. I have always been an extrovert and going up to give a speech has never been so difficult until her. She gives me so much anxiety and is extremely tough when it comes to grading speeches. She also doesn't even really explain how she wants her outlines and just removes point. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!
If she doesn't like your speech topic you won't do well on it. You have speeches, a paper about a lecture you must attend, and a final exam. I learned a lot but she is nit-picky on the outlines. If you are absent more than 2 times your grade drops. Although she is detail-oriented, she tells you exactly what she is looking for.
Took her for online speech class summer course. Stated multiple times that we should only be focusing on this class. No jobs/other classes. Assignments due every day for four weeks straight. She bases grades off of literally nothing except her own subjective opinion. Her recorded lectures are always twenty minutes longer than they need to be.
This professor was the most annoying professor known, before the start of call she made this whole things about if you have a job youll fail my class which isnt the case if you cant decipher what she wants from the hard to understand assignment and speechs she give youll fail her lectures are are unnecessarily long and you still dont learn
No one in my class understood her grading style. My advice: 1. Create notecards you can use while speaking 2. As confusing as this may sound: study, but dont study your speeches too much, be good but not too good. If youre too good, she will think you memorized your speech and she wont give you a good grade I know, its confusing
She is a horrible professor. If you have anxiety do not take her class her class was my first class in college where my anxiety worsened. She doesn't really care about her students grade only herself her teaching is very outdated.
I was not a fan of Professor Grannon. She constantly gave really long lectures and was very strict with her grading. I had trouble with a few speech outlines and she wasn't very clear with the solution. I don't believe she is a "bad" professor, but I would much rather not take her again.
Prof. Grannons grading criteria is non existent. It is completely subjective, and she will comment that you didnt do things that you clearly did do. I would spend hours to prepare for a speech for multiple days, and would get a C on it when I am a solid A student. No matter how hard you try you cant guarantee a good grade. Dont recommend.
Good Professor. Don't really need the book other than for example because it is in her lectures. Study/know your speech she can tell when you memorized and pays close attention to eye contact. Attendance mandatory. Tough grader just try your best! (Took on zoom Fall 2020)
She is a nice person but not a good teacher. Don't buy the book! I never used it and passed. Tough grader on outlines and speeches. Her classes are boring but she doesn't care if you are on your computer. Really strict on your speeches even the first one. Not the worst class. If you like to skip or not do little work you will fail.
Honestly when I first read the reviews I was terrified of how this class would go. Halfway through the semester, and imo she is a good professor. Don't buy the book, I haven't used it. Clear outlines for speeches and very chill with the grading of them. For some of my speeches I have been under time and still received an almost perfect score.
She will very rarely grade late assignments even if they're slightly late in the day. It's hard to please her and she's strict with outlines. She's nice but her class wasn't for me.
She was nice but definitely not a good teacher. Super strict on lates and absences, just one minute late and she marks you. Beware that every three lates equals one absence in her class. Barely answers her emails.
Professor Grannon is a good professor but is a very tough grader. Most times she would hype up speeches like your life would depend on it which would make everyone super anxious. Takes her a bit of time to respond to emails and at one point we were working on two speeches at once. She is not a bad professor, just very complicated.
She assigned multiple assignments at a time and did not give a lot of time to complete each one. She does not care about her students outside of the classroom and is very strict. The class is very lecture heavy and attendance matters. The lectures were boring and hard to keep track of. I bought the textbook, but never used it.

She's a teacher who explicitly mentions in the beginning of her course that she isn't going to know any of us personally. She doesn't care to know who we are and only sees you for a grade. Robotic style of teaching: She's there for her own lectures and the students are there for their own work. Don't take her class if you have the option.
Prof. Grannon is a very tough grader. if you have anxiety do not take her class. If you are nervous about a project she does not care. She is very picky and it is almost impossible to get a perfect grade on any assignment. Don't waste your money on the textbook.
Very harsh grader, rude and not helpful. Does not care about students. Only get 2 free absences. Have points deducted from your grade if you are absent more than that. You have to do one minor speech that is worth 5 pts. and three major speeches that are worth 20 pts. Write a 4 page paper, 4 outlines, 4 reflections on your speech and a final exam.
If you have a choice to switch, I would. BUT if you follow her instructions to a T and pay attention in class you'll be fine. There are 5 speeches: an intro, informative, persuasive, impromptu, and group speech. All work is done outside of class but it doesn't take long if you're doing it right. Lectures are verbal so you have to take good notes.
If you do your work and follow directions this class will not be too difficult. Her lectures are entertaining and half of the class is just listening to speeches. Outside of class, I did about an hour of actual work for each speech plus practicing a few times. She can be a bit rude sometimes but overall she's a good professor and I learned a lot.
If you can pick a different speech professor, do it, she is one of the more stricter speech professors. She's a good professor and a nice person but she makes you do work and put in effort. Don't bother with the textbook.
she could be very blunt at times but she knows what she's talking about. her lectures help (don't buy textbook) and she stuck with the syllabus. i would recommend to volunteer to go on the first speech date. focus on making eye contact and using less filler words. practice, practice, practice!
Unfortunately very disrespectful towards her students.She is a very tough grader and her lectures are long, boring, and she just reads off the book.She made a girl in our class CRY. so much unnecessary work.always degrades students, cares about attendance a bit too much.our friend got covid and sent her multiple reports,still gave her a hard time.
VERY tough grader! The textbook was a waste and only used it once. Make sure to take notes because it will be on the final. Speeches weren't terrible if you practiced, but she was very tough on grading them. Two minor speeches, one informative, one persuasive, and one group speech (persuasive). No other tests except final. Only have 2 abstinences.
Very old fashioned and is more strict on attendance. Don't believe her when she says you need the textbook, I bought it and we haven't used it once. Overbearing about phones. She teaches a whole lesson on grabbing audiences attention but her teaching style is so robotic everyone in the class zones out.
I tried to give the ratings the benefit of the doubt but they are all true. Her teaching style is very robotic. Preaches about connecting with audience but she doesn't follow her own lesson. you don't need to buy the textbook she posts them online. Cant admit when she's wrong. unfair when unforeseen circumstances arise and you have to miss class.
Not one of the best professors I've had. She is a harsh grader and can be very blunt. I wouldn't say she is mean but she is definitely harsh. Adds participation points if you volunteer for helping with timing, filming, or collecting peer notes for other speakers. Overall I would have picked a different professor for this course.

You will not need the textbook, you'll do fine with a previous edition on a pdf. Can be quite blunt and the grading isn't clear. Doesn't like electronic use. But if you just listen and do the work, you should be fine. Speeches in order: introduction, informative, persuasive, impromptu (6 mins prep after given topic), and group.
she genuinely is the worst. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought she would be caring she brushed me off. she didnt understand when I wasn't in class for a week due to a death. She gave me a 0 idk why. I did all 100 speeches of hers and got over an 80 on all of them yet still needed with like a 70 something.
She is tough grading speeches and outlines. She does not give feedback on speeches but lets peers do it anonymously. I learned a lot from her, including how to start, follow and end a speech. I am not good talking outloud most of the time, and had much anxiety, but I had a good time overall. Specially during a group speech.
Teaches a college class like it's high school. Very strict about somewhat meaningless things (speech proposals, outlines, etc. are stupidly specific). Very cold teaching style, not a very warm and welcoming professor. She does have decent insight into public speaking and speech writing but it ultimately doesn't land because of her teaching style.
If you have the opportunity to take a different professor, do so. She seems very sweet and loving but is not. Very tough when it comes to grading and speeches. Strict when it comes to outlines and attendance. Speeches were okay. You only need the textbook for the final exam.

I took this class in the Summer of 2025. It was a 4-week course. My first time taking a summer class, but the professor was friendly and nice. She is very passionate about public speaking, so people think that she is tough, but the exam was easy if you took notes and studied.
