i don't like her. she doesnt now how to teach.
She doesn't teach with the traditional teaching methods. She's a designer/artist. Follow all directions and pay attention to all details in class. She loves it when students do that. Pretty easy if you're creative.
she sucks! hard grader!!! she puts your projects down and then you feel sh*tty in front of the whole class!
Great teacher. She is truely an artist. light-heatred and entertaining. Just give her respect and follow her VERY specific instructions for all projects and you will definately get an A. Highly recommended.
she's very picky, she's not flexible, she's the worst as anart teacher!!
She is not helpful, and is very odd. She will make you feel stupid in class
She is like your typical hippie artist. She gives very specific directions that you have to follow and if you don't follow one of them she marks you down a whole grade. Class was realatively easy, but she is a hard grader.
hated this class. She doesnt make it clear what she expects in the projects and makes it difficult to get an A
love her, and still think about all the wonderful things she taught me

a little strange. If she likes you she gives you good grades even if your stuff isn't the best. If she doesn't like you she will mark you down even if your stuff is great.
I loved Mrs. Cottingham! I don't know why everyone doesn't. She is a little cooky but she has such a passion for the subject she is teaching that how can not be a great teacher.
Overall liked the course once I got the hang of teaching method. Very maticulous, be sure to leave plenty of time to work on projects. Pay close attention to what she says; its easy to miss important stuff. Her wording is hard to understand but easy if you ask her questions by re-phrasing. Uses student feedback to critique work in class.
I didn't like her at all. Her teaching sucks and so do her stupid projects... AHERN IS BETTER!!!!
how do u grade original abstract art??? in my opinion, u dont put a grade on things like this because there is always someone with a different opinion to one's personal original work.Way to make a person feel their originallity is worth a damn. Can we mark down a whole grade for those dusters she wears and the knee highs she 4-gets to pull up???

Mixed feelings on this. As much as I hated this class, hated the projects (I felt like I was in kindergarten and they took forever) and as much as I hated getting C's and B's on them, I just couldn't bring myself to hate her. She's just a cute little old lady! It'd be like hating your grandma.
....she is old and knows what she wants*** She has great passion for art, and wants you to learn and feel the passion behind art as well. Most people don't understand her, but I think she is great, and knows what she is talking about~~
She is crazy and has no method to her grading. But she also has a love for her subjects and gives easy A's if you write what she wants to hear.
shes fun and you get to do alot of different art but she gives alot of hw!!! she also wants it PERFECT!grades hard but she knows her stuff.
WArning: If u dont intend to work SHe will make a fool of you IN front of class! I saw it happen to others. She is a character and eccentric but grades too hard, she wants Perfection! and even if that means one dot missplaced. and she grades unfairly ( depending on what she favors) and is unclear.
Is a nice lady but does not grade fairly, not eveyone is a designer or an artist I felt this class was a wist of time and she is crazy!!!!
shes ok, she doesnt have a answering machine or a computer so its a little hard to stay in touch with her
She's a nice & sweet lady. If you really do good and FOLLOW instructions, you'll get a good grade in her class. If she likes your work, she'll put compliments on the grading sheet/paper. She is a PERFECTIONIST. If you're going to slack off in her class, then you'll fail. People say she's weird, that because she's the artsy type.
Really nice, but she needs to retire already. Seriously, go home C-Ham. We love you.
She is nice on the outside but a HORRIBLE teacher. Too much work and no class time to do it. She grades very hard! She is not clear and speaks to the class like were in middle school. DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!
She's a really good teacher, you learn a lot in her class. Only problem, it's very time consuming.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Period.
cottingham has a lot to teach, you just have to be willingly to learn. she is a hard grader but i learned a lot from her. if you actually want to learn then take her class but don't if you intend on being a slacker.
DO NOT take her class...seriously shes way to wacky for me & she tells weird stories, also if you ask her a question she cuts in mid-sentance & says your not listening but she doesnt explain her projects clearly...i HATE that class
Miss Cottingham was the best! She's kooky and weird, but what do you expect from someone her age?! She's got a lot to teach and just as long as you follow her instructions and know what she likes to see, then you'll get a good grade. WARNING THOUGH, there are many projects involved. They weren't hard, just time consuming.
So I will be the first to say...Ms. Cottingham has frustrated me to the point of wanting to drop the class. BUT, she is a great teacher and you learn a lot from her. Those who have a genuine interest will benefit. Do not expect an easy A, attendance is mandatory and the projects are time consuming! She is also a tough grader.
She was okay as a teacher. Projects were very time consuming. She required a lot of little things and instructions that were to be done her way. Overall, was okay to have on a monday morning. A little over dramatic sometimes. has favorites...
She is horrible, she has favorites does not teach. She is rude, and helpless. Don't waste your time in her class, it will only lower your grade point average!! She is senile, and needs to retire!!!!!!!!!!! Don't take her class.
I took her for color and design. omg.... she is so emotional... i totally agree with other ppl's comments. she stutters A LOT. she doesnt grade that hard but talks way too much about the artists we dont even have to know. she 'woo hoo's too much.
least favorite class! the projects are time consuming, she makes weird wooohooos and once she told our class a story about her placenta creating a rainbow.
If you're very creative, Just follow her instructions and you'll get an easy A... If you're not creative, dont take her... She taught me about a lot of Artists, Im a VCOM major and she helped me understand colors more...
She's terrible. She doesn't explain things well and she's weird. I thought I would have liked Color and Design but she ruined it for me. Don't take her class.
miss cottingham is a freak. she tells really awkward stories. overall, her class is fun because of the projects that you do on your own. But she is very unclear. To pass this class you MUST have a students number. I met my friend in that class, and to make sure we were doing projects right we had to send pix to each other of our stuff. Very unhelpf
VERY picky about projects, she did not make it an interesting class, we didnt really use the textbook, potential to be a fun class but for some reason she found a way to not make it fun but difficult
True, Miss Cottingham is a bit odd. Yes, she does say woo hoo a lot and tells a story about a placenta rainbow. She can be a little unclear about assignments. But she does knows a great deal about art and is very, very passionate about it. Take her class if you have a strong interest in art and art technique. Otherwise, you'll be miserable.
She's a little cooky because of her age which is literally 75, but she is still teaching becuase she is so passionate about art and teaching us about it. i've had her for color and design and seminar of the arts and i loved her both times. easy classes. she will open up your mind!! you won't regret taking her class.
What a strange woman. She gets really emotional over the smallest things. She reminds me of my grandma. I think its time Cottingham retires. If you do all of the assignments and turn them in on time, its an easy A.
She is very odd. she loves to dance and hum and talks about life stories a lot. Although she knows what she is talking about, her grading scale is very difficult is u miss one project or anything its impossible to get an A i wouldn't take her again.
Doesn't like to answer questions. Impossible to reach outside of class (no voicemail or email) and assigns way too much homework for this kind of class.
I respect her, caz her lecture was extremely wonderful ! If you can take her class, you can get high grade ! Even though she is strict, she always give high students !!
I've had Ms. Cottingham for two classes, Color Theory and then Seminar in the Arts. She may seem strange, strict, and repeats herself a lot. But the really wonderful thing about this teacher is that she is there to TEACH you something and her life stories are wonderful and full of life!
Those students who dont like Ms Cottingham are those who arent serious about their edu. Ms Cottingham is a teacher that inspires you to do better at what you're doing and to express yourself through your creativity. Shes always happy&its contagious, whether or not you think she is strange. Shes a strong passionate women and I admire her a lot.
She is great! Will always learn something new from her everyday =) Word of advice to those who slack off, we're paying over 50 grand to be at FIDM. Get your $'s worth! do all your h/w and always right down her notes on the board so you dont say "i dnt know this was due today" to her. shes one of those teachers that is worth the time learn from.
WONDERFUL TEACHER ALTHOUGH, She doesnt own a computer or cell phone, but if you're a student who wants to learn, you work with her.all you have to do is drop off your assignments in her box at fidm if absent.it's not like you dont go to fidm all week so it shouldnt be a problem. you want to get an A, work for it.That's how it is in the real world.
One in a million teacher!
she is a bit coo coo a little spacy but maybe it was the 60s but the class is fun and intresting..althopugh it gets stressfull
great teacher, full of personality, great to learn from. although assigns more homework than usual, its a college course class, what do you expect?? you'll always learn something new from her =)
Ms. Cottingham, I find her rather boring, everything she teaches is what I learned in my art high school freshman yr. She loves to give out a lot of projects back to back, be ready for the high stress that comes from her class! She is a bite crazy, she loves saying WOO HOO, her signature slogan! Here and there does she give interesting facts.
If you get this terrible excuse for a human being on your schedule, run for the hills! She will make you crazy and want to drop out of FIDM. And be prepared to hear in grave detail about her birthing of her child...and her placenta. And she's VERY forgetful and will forget to write your grades down in her grade book, and claim you never turned itin
wow. first quarter at FIDM and never thought terrible thoughts toward a teacher in my life. She wants us see the magic happening!!!!! really... please if i wanted magic id go to disneyland. Placenta stories are extremely true.... too much work. sometime 4-5 projects due in one week. she doesnt have a computer and doesnt check email... take bowne
She is a nightmare! This poor esl student would ask her questions to clarify and she would FLIP OUT. She docked 5 points off my museum paper because the receipt from the museum wasn't signed by a museum official?? She is short tempered, crazy, and over all~the worst teacher I have ever had. Oh yeah, and the placenta story is hella gross.
horrible. worst human possible. she failed me by 2 points. and she admitted it was on purpose.
Very sweet lady! College is hard so suck it up. If you work hard you do Well. I loved the videos she showed. Even though I did the same projects in highschool, I liked the teacher.
I'm surprised at how bad the comments on here are! This is not a difficult class at all, and Miss Cottingham is actually really nice and gives good advice. She talks a lot about herself, but I think what she says is very interesting. The class is really, really easy but there is time-consuming homework every week. And I hope you like abstract art.
I actually liked her class! She's always happy, smiling, and clearly she loves to teach! yes she's kooky but she's an artist so... Her projects are VERY time consuming but you learn alot! If you're lazy then don't take her class!!!
Ohh, Miss Cottingham. She's very cheerful and loves what she teaches, which is obvious. She is fairly strict, though. She has an eye for color and will call you out in front of the class when we compare work. But she calls everyone out, so no worries. I like the way she grades though, she's pretty fair.
She's a stickler w/ her rubric. She spells it out pretty clearly - but if you don't read it very clearly, with attention to detail (i.e. make sure you have a museum employee sign your receipt) you'll be docked points left and right. She's an old lady who has seen every trick in the book, and doesn't let anything slide. Yet, she's very kooky.
She's a sweet lady with lots of wonderful stories to share. This class contains lots of work and they are all extremely time consuming. I have to say she is too tough and unfair when it comes to grading. She does not see the effort behind everyone's work and doesn't seem to listen to comments. I wouldn't take her classes again.
Cottingham is old school; she is a REAL teacher. She believes in her students, invites everyone's opinions to discussions, and really cares. A lot of class discussions may seem irrelevant to some; however, if you engage in them, they are one of the most beneficial things for your education. keep an open mind, and take the privilege of her class!
Miss cottingham made me severely question why I am paying so much to attend FIDM. She does not use computers or email so it is very hard to communicate with her. I love color theory but if I could have taken this again with a different teacher I would in a heartbeat.
THIS WAS THE WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE AND IF YOU DON'T LISTEN TO THIS REVIEW YOU WILL REGRET IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. tells u to go to a museum on a list, then u go and she says it wasn't on the list and for midterm says u will get a 0 if you give the answers SHE GAVE YOUIN TEXTBOOK on test. she has not been laid in 30+yr
You can expect a really sweet older woman, You go on about 4-5 field trips. They're all basically optional, but I'd recommend going because she takes her classes to really cool places; you'll have to write a one paged paper about each. You have two major projects which include a paper and a visual presentation (nothing digital). Creativity counts!
What ever you do, DON'T take this class! I've always been an A student and I have a strong background in art but this class is a nightmare. She gives poor direction but expects everyone to understand the assignments. Don't bother asking questions. She never uses the internet she's impossible to reach and doesn't post grades. Switch out if you can.
Everyone hated her, but if you are able to relate to and understand a passionate and creative mind, you'll love Ms Cottingham. She can ramble a bit and doesn't hand out easy A's, but she's a woman with more love for art and color than anyone I've ever met. If observing and learning from eccentric creatives is something you like, take her class.
Cottingham was the type of person you'd want as your grandmother, not your professor. If you don't connect with art on the same level as her then it might be kinda rough LOL. Projects were pretty fun however VERY time consuming and she's a tough grader. Only had one midterm which was easy and a hwk assignment which required a trip to a museum
Horrible teacher. She's an 83 year old teacher who uses no technology so you can't communicate outside of class. Wouldn't recommend or take her class ever again
Sometimes she's really nice but overall she's really strict with her grading. I wouldn't recommend taking this class.
Don't like her at all. She shows no empathy and forgets what we talked about 2 min ago. She's 86 years old.
Don't take her class!!!!!!Don't take her class!!!!!!
Worst part of my FIDM experience - Hundreds of dollars for Cottingham to read us a book as if we were second graders. If you like feeling like you're 8 years old, getting assignments with unclear instructions and ridiculous grading, then this class is for you. Follow directions
Nice at first but very quickly went crazy. she was not clear about her instructions at all and very loudly announced to the class if you had dome something wrong.
Miss Cottingham is a passionate but very strict teacher + has high expectations of her students. She can be unclear at times, so it is important to ask questions if youre unsure about something. Directions for projects must be followed EXACTLY. This class is not for slackers! The work is time-consuming but I learned a LOT from Miss Cottingham.
All directions given by the professor are very confusing and you will never understand what you need to do for an assignment. She grades incredibly hard and will mark you off points for every little mistake imaginable. DO NOT TAKE, SWITCH OUT FOR ANOTHER PROFESSOR ASAP. She isn't clear, grades unfair, and will lecture you on why you all are so bad.
She doesn't enter in grades until the final, so she writes them down and records them incorrectly. I brought 4 papers that she graded back to her that I received full credit for and she still wouldn't change her grade document to reflect. Seems to think she's giving us amazing lectures when really it's things you can find on google in two seconds
Im not sure why there are so many negative reviews but I genuinely enjoyed her class. Sure, she gives a lot of work and criticizes your work in front of the class, but its if prepares you for the negativity youre bound to receive from the industry. I learned a lot and honestly, this class is not for slackers. Follow the rubric and be creative.
she was not clear on homework instructions. when asked questions about it, she told me to read the handout again. she was rude to me and made me cry, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS SWITCH TEACHERS
Cottingham's class was by far the most difficult experience I've had at FIDM. Homework takes FOREVER to complete (more than all of my other classes combined) and as a Merchandising and Marketing student, having a class that is solely painting and art projects did not benefit me for future courses.
Possibly the worst teacher I've had at FIDM. She is definitely interested in color, but she is also almost 90, so she tends to forget things as well as puts in grades wrong. If you want to contact her, it can't be online, it needs to be in person, but she won't let you talk to her on breaks. She has very long lectures and isn't caring whatsoever.
