Great teacher. gives you plenty of oppurtunities. nice lady. stay on top of your work and it will be a breeze.
I would have liked more real world examples instead of the professor reading to me from a power point presentation each week.
She has a monotone voice, and reads from a power point presentation. Can be sarcastic at times. She knows her stuff, but the deal is she cannot convey it porperly. You will loose intrest in lectures quickly. In my hmble opinion don't take her.

stupid teacher. very boring. wasn't nice. kicked me out for cheating, when i would of never ever thoght of cheating! don't take her!!! she is an idiot!
She doesnt know any answers to your questions. Shes boring and the class is too long. She started the course half way through and then crammed everything into eight weeks. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!!!!
Reads from PPT presentation. Knowledgeable, but not a teacher. Can't explain things multiple ways to aid in student learning. Do yourself a big favor - find another teacher.
Very informative. One of those professors that know what they are talking about but doesn't know how to explain it so you can understand it. Probably because she's so experienced. You want a challenge great teacher to take. Looking for a easy "A" run the other way....fast!
I thought this course was really a interesting one but this teacher made it worse for me.
Poor Teacher. Has the knowledge, but does not know how to explain. Students follow tutorial from a book. How helpful is this?? We could do it at home!!

Knowledgable, but not a very good instructor.
run the other way. fast!
I know you read the other reviews and think she is bad news but this is programming. You'll never know if you are the real deal if you aren't worked around a bit. It only a matter of time before you get a hard prof and you have no choice. If you can't handle a tough prof and you are majoring in this stuff, maybe you should switch majors. I got a B.
DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO CONNECT WITH STUDENTS AT ALL !!!
Do not take this class. She will not help you if you dont understand. Does not know how to teach at all. I went to learning center for help and they couldnt even help me with the projects. The overall class average was and "F".
Very, very bad course. She does not teach in her class at all. She just shows some slide shows and tells you what you see, not what it means. She does not explain anything and she will not help you if you don’t understand. If you want to learn how to program, take someone else. Over 60% of the students in the class droped the course.
She takes off for the tiniest errors in code and even when it seems that she is working with you she really isn't. The teacher I had for Java was better than her. She really needs to lighten up.
She knows her stuff, but has a hard time relating it to students. Very nice and courteous, however speaks in very low voice. Her teaching method is all PPT (very long ones) and hardly no hands-on lab. Class fell to only 8 people and nearly everyone had severe problems completing assignments. Class was harder than most online classes. TOUGH ONE!
Gail is a hard professor, but a very nice person. If you stay focused on your work and know that from day one that none of her classes are easy you will do fine. I would suggest knowing the basics of programming before taking any of her classes. Be prepared to do a lot of work.
Nice lady but for an 'intro to' class it's taught at too high a level. Uses lots of ppt presentations but never explains any technical terms, just really reads what the slides say. Big sense of vagueness with what's due and when.
At the speed this class moves, this teacher spends little time on difficult tasks and continues to new lessons despite students complaining they do not understand. She has an inability to teach clearly; (perhaps she's too intelligent to communicate properly with others)......also, there is no grade "curve" despite difficulty.
If you're going to learn from this teacher, you'd better read all the material twice.
Worst online professor I've ever had. She doesn't "teach" anything. She posts difficult assignments & expects you to learn by reading the textbook only.
Worst teacher ever! Run away fast! Homework goes way beyond the text and she is never available to answers questions. Multible emails and phone calls were never returned. Solutions to the extreme homework are not provided. Tests are given before homework is graded.
I don't recommed this class to anyone. She moves extreamly fast and answers no questions. Avoid her at all costs.
She is the worst teacher ever. She reads powerpoint presentations made from the book. Does not explain much. Offers little help. Gives very hard tests, resulting in most students getting discouragingly low grades even after putting in a lot of effort. There were about 20 students at the start and only 3 remained. Stay away!
STAY AWAY. She is the worst professor ever. She gives 12 documents per week for home work which take an hour per document to complete. She then only grades 4 of the 12. So if you get 8 perfect, but she grades the 4 bad, then your grade is skewed. Apart from this little fact, she is absolutely the worst professor EVER!!!
WORST professor ever. I NEVER had problems with anybody, always did my work perfect, and that's it. But not this time. She does not give clear instructions for the homework, posts quizzes before grading the assignments so it's unclear whether we even understanfd the matter, ignores emails and disc.bd, and looks like she does not care the slightest!
Ms. Gerhig is a very nice person and she knows her stuff. She will help you, but you have to make an effort to learn! Don't take her classes expecting to glide through with minimal effort. You will work HARD, but put out the effort & YOU WILL LEARN ALOT! This is college. No pain - no gain! Struggle hard for whatever you want and believe in!
Running the other way. I had a hard time learning anything from this teacher. She doesnt fully example anything. She give test from a testing bank and never goes over any of the question.
SHE'S YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE. YOU MAKE SO MUCH TIME FOR THAT CLASS AND SHE GRADE EVERY LITTLE CRAP.SHE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO GET HELP FROM OTHER STUDENTS.FOR EXAMPLE, SHE'LL TEACH YOU THE BASIC AND EXPECT YOU TO BE AN EXPECT. YOU ARE FORCE TO TAKE THE CLASS WITH HER.NO ONE EVER MAKES MORE THAN A "C" ON HER CLASS.
This Instructor assigns readings and answers from chapter exams and quizes when the students do not have the boo and will not be able to get the book till the day before the work is due.
She is the hardest professor Ive ever had and Im an A student, she likes to give you a bunch of maybe's. Do not take this class I am so serious.
THIS TEACHER SUCKS. EVERY QUESTION YOU HAVE FOR HER SHE ALWAYS ANSWERS IT WITH A QUESTION....LEAVES U STUCK FOR SURE. IM NOT EVEN HALF WAY OUT THIS CLASS... HELP!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!
The class was much harder than expected, however I feel that I've learned something & that my "A" actually means something. To all the complainers, including my classmates, programming is not for the faint of heart. Thanks, Ms. Gehrig, for weeding out the lazy and the stupid. Less competition in the job market for the rest of us in a few years.
THIS PROFESSOR HATES WHAT SHE DOES FOR A LIVING. I AM TELLING YOU, SERIOUSLY, DO NOT TAKE HER, DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO WAIT AND TAKE ANOTHER PROF, TRUST ME. I HAVE A 3.8 BY THE WAY AND I HAVE OVER 55 CREDITS.
This professor is the worst prof I have ever had. She doesn't stick to the book that she teaches out of and talks too quiet to really hear her in class. When you ask her to repeat herself she gets worked up. I would rather crawl through a fire ant bed than attempt to take her class again. She is a person that I would refer to as impossible.
I would take another class if I were you. She is the definition of hard to deal with. She likes to smile at you while avoiding answering questions you might have.
Don't take her class. It is very hard to understand what she is teaching. 3/4 of the class failed. If you need to take COP 1000 intro to programming, take Frank Comar's class, otherwise you will fail. If you take COP 1000, I guaruntee you a quarter of the class will drop out no matter who is teaching but Gail Gehrig is the hardest that teaches this
I took this as an online class and I have to say SHE WAS THE WORST TEACHER EVER. Intsructions were unclear and when you emailed her no response or bad answer. Our final exam was a nightmare because the instructions made no sense and when she finally straightened it out only had a few hours to complete. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF'S CLASSES.
She is a very difficult instructor. She is very hard to hear and understand. The instructions for the projects are vague and often do not make sense. She never has a good answer for almost any question. She rarely responds to any e-mails or phone calls, so if you have questions make sure you ask in class. I ended up with a B, but only because I got
This class was very difficult for me. However, never having any programming experience, I worked very hard, and Professor Gehrig has an open door policy in which I took advantage of and was able to meet with her one-on-one. This is were she took the time to really help me understand. She is really a good teacher. But will push you to do your best.
She knows C programming very well but she can't convey her knowledge. I already knew how to code going in, and taught the class much more than she did. A student emailed her an important question about a project TWO weeks before it was due. She sent a confusing answer the day before it was due. She hates teaching because she knows she's bad at it.
If you're going to take COP2220 at FSCJ, do yourself a favor: take it with Difranco at Kent campus. His projects provide relevant challenges that improve your problem solving ability and make you a better coder. Gehrig's projects are unneccessarily complicated. there were several times where less than 10% of the class finished the project.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! USELESS, LECTURES ARE NOT CLEAR & HW ASSIGNMENTS R EXTREMELY TEDIOUS. SHE TAKES OFF POINTS 4 EVERYTHING. NICE LADY, BUT HORRIBLE TEACHER. 60% OF CLASS HAS DROPPED. IS ALSO ANNOYED AT STUDENTS WHEN THEY ASK QUESTIONS IN CLASS. AVOID AT ALL COST.OFFICE HOURS ARE ALSO EXTREMELY LIMITED SO HELP IS VERY HARD TO GET. CLASS AVG IS 65
She is a nice person. She is very patient answering questions, very approcahable. She has an open door policy if you need extra help.
Honestly don't listen to people telling you she's awful. She's not. Yes; she's hard...but you'll be thankful later if you plan on doing CS majors at universitys because she will teach you more than any other teacher. Best of all you'll learn the logic of coding and not just "how to code in x lang" which makes you more valuable.
Here's the truth, PROGRAMMING IS HARD. If you don't know math or how to attach a file to blackboard find another major. Gehrig is a great professor, but the subject isn't just something you can casually learn. It's hard stuff for serious students.
Obviously people who complain about a 60% drop rate haven't been to a 4 year college. You take Gehrig when you want to be someone useful later in life. If you're only going for an A.S. or Tech Degree, then don't take her. If you're going for a B.S. or Masters, take her. You'll learn more form her than any other teacher. She's hard, but youll learn
This is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't explain what she's doing while working an example and when asked to slow down she does not. She even deducted points on the homework for items that were not covered until the next chapter.
If you know vey little about programming and want to learn it in a classroom environment. This is not a teacher you want, she seems to assume you already have knowledge of program logic prior to starting this class. If you already have some extensive knowledge of programming this class is great for you. But if you dont find nother reacher QUICK!
The worst teacher I have ever had. She is too quiet and won't help you even when you need it. I think the really enjoys failing people because over 2/3 of the class always fails and she doesn't even try to help them. If you want a good grade, take someone else. Otherwise take Gail Gehrig at your own risk!!
Rambles, stumbles and creates her own student distractions. Does not connect with raw new students wanting to learn. She tends to associate with students who already are working programmers in her intro classes. Does not give straight answers. Routinely demonstrates lack of programming knowledge. Very disorganized and uncommited to teaching.
Excellent professor. I went into this class with absolutely no programming background and was able to pick it up very quickly thanks to Professor Gehrig's help. The only downside is she went through the text out of sequence, which threw several of us when we jumped from chapter 2 to chapter 7. It was daunting at first, but she is very patient.
Ms Gehrig is always pleasant & neat in appearance. She wants you to learn and she is not easy. Her classes are tough but she will help you to no end and seems devoted to see that you 'get it'. I rated medium for clarity only because she is soft-spoken and hard to be heard clearly. She will teach you much more than is in the book. Great Lady!
was an intro class but she taught it like it was an expert level class. she provided powerpoints but flew through them and did not wait for us to catch up, nor did she explain what her code meant or why she wrote it the way she did,she taught us nothing and then suggested we get tutors if we did not understand,if you want to learn find someone else
I got to say that I have had a lot of programming teachers at this school, and by far this professor is the worst. She does not explain things very well in class and it is very hard to figure out the logic she has in her assignments. So far I would say that half the class has dropped already due to her organizational skills. Take another professor.
Prof. Gail is a wonderful teacher. This is college level course, don't expect to get good grade if you don't spend time to study. In addition, this is programming course, not how to use Word or Excel.
By far one of the worst teachers at fscj. she loses herself explaining herself. she couldnt halp me figure out a problem, smiled at me, and walked away making the student next to me help me. moves at her own place. figures you know as much as a professor in an intro class. dont know how she got hired
She is probably the best programming professor in FSCJ. Take her if you don't afraid of challenge and plan to study in Computer Science field. Trust me, you will not regret your decision when you transfer to university.
Please do not take this class without having a background in computer science or basic programming. You will get lost. You will ask for help. That will make you more lost. Want to pick up programming as a summer hobby? STAY FAR AWAY. She's a nice lady, but she assumes you already know what she knows - which isn't so good for an introductory class.
Intro to Programming was NOT taught at a beginner's level. As a beginner, I frequently got lost during lectures & projects. She does try to help her students understand the logic, but the advice tended to go over my head. But if you keep up with the homework, you'll pass either way.
This class was supposed to be an introduction class but it felt much harder.Must have some knowledge of programming before this class.Jumped around in the book.Attendance not mandatory but you will need. Doesn't explain herself very well.Nice lady.Knows the material, just not good at teaching it.
Class was not taught appropriately for an introductory course. Skipped around chapters, never truly utilized the book in class, made projects more difficult than they needed to be. She wouldn't be such a bad professor if she took the time to explain things more clearly and didn't expect students to know everything programming beforehand.
Mrs.Gehrig is a very nice person, but I categorize her as an administrator of a class rather than a teacher. For frame of reference I am Phi Theta Kappa and Dean's List. I chose a W over a C or D because of the need to keep a competitive transfer GPA. She is unable to explain concepts in any words other than the text books.
Prof Gehrig is brilliant and anice person...but a horrible teacher. She is insensitive to the fact that some people aren't on her level of programming even at intro level she fails to explain things and clarify based on a beginner's skill. NOT AN INTRO COURSE don't care if programming is hard I expect to be taught not expected to know prior to.
I have to give Gehrig the fact that she knows a lot about programming but if you plan on taking this class make sure you know quite a bit beforehand. I thought since this was an intro class it would be well explained but was far from the fact. She doesnt help you with anything and goes through the material super fast. My suggestion:diff proffessor!
This Prof is very nice. She knows the material. She is a terrible teacher. The 1st day of class she wen over some pretty simple stuff then just flew through rest.full class on day one. 7 of us by 5th week. If you go to her office for help she will but if you don't have time for extra help avoid this prof.took ricfrench after dropping gehrig's class.
She is nice and knowledgeable about the subject, but she is terrible at teaching/explaining things. She is very confusing. She expects you to know all of the things and make you understand them on your own. That is not teaching. I would've dropped the course if I could have. I don't recommend taking her class.
Awful experience. Merciless in grading, has to be her way, or you lose points. Scribbles illegible & faulty "corrections." No extra credit, grade scaling, or dropping lowest score. Jumps all around in VS, hard to follow. Obscure multiple choice questions, no answers for missed. You have to code from memory as all tests are closed everything. Avoid!
Grades mercilessly. Her rubric for projects is very subjective. Scribbles corrections on hw that is not legible. She is very hard to understand and teaching is not very clear. Stay away.
She is brilliant and knows her stuff, but teaching is not for her. Very hard to understand what she is saying. Fast paced, making it hard for people who have never used C to follow along. Treats us as if we know C and are experts at it. Long assignments, short due dates. Expected us to memorize C functions by heart for tests (no use of notes)
Challenging and confusing assignment expectations. Error free homework is unattainable, even when code runs perfectly. Tests are split between an academic portion (hard) and a writing code portion (impossible) using your memory only, no references of any type. Insanely hard class. Weight the hit to your GPA vs learning JAVA.Yes, you will learn JAVA
worst teacher I've ever had, gave me 35pts out of 100 for a program written to perform all requested functions, it was surreal, she wanted a program that could query and produce 5 simple things, my program did all 5, i still don't believe it to this day.
While she effectively provided code, she didn't manage to explain how the code functioned practically. The class will destroy you if you miss a day and don't ask questions. Do not relax. She does not curve. If you don't feel confident by the withdrawal date, get out of there, it will not get better.
good professor but needs work hard to understand what shes talking about sometimes but is there to help you understand if really need help
This is a tough class in general. Her teach and move on approach can make you fall behind very easily. However if you really don't understand something she will do her best to help you get your code up and running.
Professor Gehrig is top notch. I work in the computer field and took Intro to C# to bolster my programming knowledge. If you want to learn programming then Prof. Gehrig is the one to take. Make no bones about it --- you'll work for the grade. She's fair and willing to help. You'll learn more in one term than you ever thought possible. A+
Professor Gehrig is an average instructor. She is friendly and helps you understand the material. However she grades in a peculiar manner as well as requiring a electronic and hard copy of your work. You MUST have all copies or expect your grade to drop. I recommend another professor unless you work well off of the textbook.
I probably was in the same class as previous review. Overall I really enjoyed the class. The grading was a bit peculiar at times. If you work best with minimal guidance her class atmosphere is for you. If you honestly are interested in programming you will probably like her. If you are not into programming I would recommend another professor.
She doesn't teach to you, but at you instead. Avoid her if possible, unless you already know coding. For a first-timer I had to teach myself a lot of this course. Also, the book she requires doesn't line up with the programs you will use in her course. So the pseudocode in the book doesn't work the same way in flowgorithm, or raptor, etc.
Best feedback I have ever received from a professor, very specific and is willing to help if you put the work in. She is demanding. If you want an easy A, she may not be the best choice. If you want to acquire programming skills that will help you in the workforce, she is a great choice. I am taking her again next semester.
I am surprised at so many bad reviews, but in reality this is just a really hard course with any Professor. Coding is hard, thats why few people do it. Prof Gehrig is a brilliant and sympathetic Professor. She grades tests pretty leniently. Do all the homework and show up to every class and you will likely pass. She is a great Professor.
The syllabus is clear and the class itself is well balanced. Programs do not match the instructions in the textbook and are not compatible with a computer major or career. Grading is hard to decipher. If you're hard of hearing or have poor eyesight you will miss a majority of the lecture.
On the day of our final this Professor says your final grade can never be more than 1 letter grade higher than the average of all your test grades! Basically all the HW and participation points were useless and she didn't tell us until day of final. Would have dropped it if I knew from the beginning
She was hard but knew what she was doing. I had a lot of trouble in her class, and she doesn't give extra credit. You have to turn in a paper ever week, excepted when test come out. Very hard.
Gail Gehrig is a nice person but not a goodProf she is a slow grader, doesnt give enought time onTests,WillTakeOff points forTheSmallest things, and her Directions are OftenUnclear as to what she wants youToDo. On testDays she willGive alecture for about an hr beforeThe testNot givingUs enought time to fin. WishIcouldSayMoreButTheCharLimitIsToSmall
I wish I would have consulted this website before signing up last minute for this class. If you miss one small thing in your program prepare to lose 20 points. She will keep you here until well after the 3 hours. She makes you start learning another chapter the day you have a test and then gives you an hour to finish a large program. Stay away
Extremely tough grader. But pretty helpful if you make the time to email her for help.
Doesnt teach, just makes you retype what she types on her computer and expects you to understand it. Doesn't tell you what she grades on, even a working program could get you a failing grade on assignments. Nitpicks grammar, mispell a word in a comment and expect to be penalized. Book is no helpLecturesAnewLessonBeforeExamsLeavingYouWithLittleTime
Professor Gail is a very kind and understanding lady, she will give help when needed. You actually learn with her.... when its 1 to 1. During her class she speaks low and fast. Super hard to keep up with and is a super tough grader! I should have looked over her ratings before choosing her.
discouragingly brutal grader, you can turn in a completely sound program that check all boxes and get no more than a 65 on it, gives absolutely minimal/ineligible feedback, doesnt answer calls/emails, gives you an hour in class to make long program for a test grade, I could go on. Over half of class Currently failing. Not an intro course. Stayawa
Nice lady, but man... she's very VERY hard to deal with. I can't get a single call or email back, let alone feedback that I (or anyone else I've asked) can read. If you ask in class, after more than 5 minutes she'll ask one of the other students to help you and continue the lesson. Let alone the ridiculous time limit on tests. Stay away...
I took an online class so there was not much interaction with the professor. Most of the work is done via online software SAMS/Cengage. The lessons are long winded and a pain to get through but it's an easy class if you do the work.
At first it was little things like she would show up late to class but would always lecture us about being in time. Wasnt very helpful and since weve switched to online its been even worse. If I couldve gave her zero stars I wouldve.
Nice lady though she really shouldn't be teaching this class. This class is set up for you to fail or do mediocre at best due to her very strange/unclear grading system. I really couldn't advise anyone taking this class with her.
I took her for web technologies and it was so bad, I took C# as a transient student at St. Johns River because I couldn't bear to take another of her classes. It's nearly impossible to understand what her requirements are for any assignments. Lectures are jibberish and a total waste of time- I could have learned more from Youtube videos.
Just don't take this class with this professor.
The class is hard because you're graded on arbitrary things. She gives little instructions but expects things to be right. The tutorials/slides are garbage, they don't explain everything. Her instructions are make sure it's in working order. Try this. 2+2?. If you say 4 you're wrong because 2+2 the number 4. If this confused you, this class will
You're grade by every line item and it has to be 100% identical to hers. If you come out the gate getting 100s, drop the class because you won't gain ground. Oddly get more work during holiday weekends.
She subtracts points for literally everything. The only way to get an "A" in her C# class is to already be an experienced programmer. If you are usually an "A" student, be prepared to spend 20+ hours per week outside of class just trying to hang on to a low B.
as other on here have said she is an incredibly hard grader. I'll give a specific example to explain my point. We had a modular assignment where the main function has to call other functions, instead of passing and returning a very often used variable I made it a global variable. She took 1-2 points off every single time I did that. Nearly 15 times
Jesus himself wouldn't pass this class. You can literally created your own programming language, ask her to teach you the language you created, and you'll still fail. A Senior Engineer @ Google would be lucky to get a low C in this class. Listen to me good, don't try and play cap'n code a 304you're going to fail. Thou shall not pass, collect $200.
This class is impossible to pass. Do not even think about enrolling. It will be a complete waste of your time and money. I strongly advise that you take this class at a different college and transfer the credit back into FSCJ.
The worst teacher I have ever taken. She wants students to fail, she will try her hardest to give the lowest grade possible for work that is perfect. You could have your website look perfectly like the books and she will still give you a C. If you take her you are asking for a stressful semester. DO not ever take this professor, she is terrible.
She grades the assignments on directions that were not given for the assignment. Had the whole class purchase the wrong material, so the entire Java section was left out. She only proctored the last 2 out of 5 days of the exam. She requires attendance but only reads the PP's that have been online and then let's the class teach each other. RUN!
If anxiety helps you learn then take this professor's class. Her projects take the time of two classes and she wants things formatted differently than what the textbook she chose tells you. Her teaching methods seem a little dated and her project instructions can be extremely confusing at times.
Prof. Gehrig sucked. She clearly does not know any HTML CSS or JS. She was not able to answer any of my questions regarding the content. Her lectures only comprised of reading slides and not even explaining them. It sucked because programming is not my strong suit, but i've had some professors to help make learning easy. Don't take her. STAY AWAY!!
My comments keep getting deleted when I share it, adding to how much I don't like my experience in this class. Someone is reporting them? I will refrain from sharing my experience then, and leave the rating.
There were no lectures uploaded, no notes, nothing at all. We were told to buy a specific textbook that came with an online code and we were graded on completing the online assignments through the program. Easily 6-7 hours of work per week to make it through hundreds of questions per chapter. She literally just input grades from there, no teaching.
She was a super nice person to talk to but she just wasn't a good teacher. If I had a question for her, she would almost ALWAYS just ask me to look up the answers online. The majority of the class got between a C- and an F.
This is not a professor that sets you up for success! Most of her answers are to google it or ask a peer for help. The term I took other students ended up getting to take the class again for free and I was moved to a different professor after going to the dean with the emails of 5+ peers having the same issue, others withdrew. WORST prof EVERRRR!!
I honestly do not know how FSCJ still has her teaching!? Multiple peers got a free term because we went to the dean with all of the issues we had in class. If you take her and the majority of your peers are failing/ have the same complaints, GO TO THE DEAN! SQUEEKY WHEEL GETS THE GREASE!! Or just RUN and don't take her at all!!
Never answer your questions.Teach Awful, she only teach what she wants. She does not cover what she need in the tests and projects.
Waste of time and money, totally useless, please stay away from this teach. She don't know anything.
The teach is friendly, but is straightforward. If you are fairly new to coding outside of Javascript, this teacher is extra strict, as if she expects you to already know the code. She also does not do short assignments, as it is like a 1 project weekly basis. Only take this class if you have prior knowledge with C. Her methods are very... taxing.
