very nice professor, I took a class with her and T.A.ed for her once.

great lecturer and explains really well through all her topics. Incredible powerpoint notes that you can copy down...sometimes she clicks too fast to copy down. Midterms and final-hard abdtricky. You have to really learn the materials.
I loved her lectures. She was really interesting.
She explains the material very well, and doesn't go through the slides too quickly. She also brought in children, even her own, for demonstrations. The tests are really tough; you'll need to know everything about the experiments discussed.
VERY GOOD TEACHER. she tries to keep the dry material intersting, brings kids into class. she has enthusiasm of her teaching. her exams are pretty easy if you just take notes and read the book. there's extra credit. 1 midterm, 1 final and one 2 page paper. SUGGEST TAKING THIS CLASS!
When she is teaching a 3 hour class BEWARE! You will get bored out of your mind. Her exam proturing is the worst I have seen yet. When it takes like 45 minutes for everyone to be seated & quiet with their exams there is something terribly wrong. However, as a person she seems nice and caring.
terrible. 3 step lecture: step 1: put up slide. step 2: talk so fast no one understands. step 3: next slide and repeat. Worst psych class I've ever taken, she's easily irritated, disorganized and talks too much about her stupid kids. setup: 1 mid 1 final 1 lame journal, curve on class was only 10pts
cares about and encourages her students to take time to come by and talk to her. out of 320 points, 150 goes to midterm and final, 20 to paper, and she gives a 12 point extra credit assignment. She is straightforward in her exam questions, pay attention to lecture and do assigned readings
Very nice and interesting... she cares about her students. You MUST read the book to do well on the midterm/final, but really easy if you read.
Genuinely cares about students. (She's a mom). It's important to go to her lectures and pay attention closely to what she says in addition to the slides. Also, reading is essential to a good grade. Know key terms.
I found the class extremely interesting. She is very easy-going and helpful, cares a lot about her students. Works hard to make sure everyone understands.
WORST PROCTERING JOB OF MIDTERM AND FINAL EVER. While she may be "nice" and "motherly", that is not what I'm looking for in a professor. She babbles on and on too much, loses her train of thought, and her in-class lectures are too boring. Just memorize the book and somehow learn to deal with her.
Her psychology 101 class was very interesting and fun and i learned alot from her. Her lectures are very clear and she make you understand it very good. Her test were hard and she was very picky when it come to research paper. This class helps you alot if you have childern. Take it!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved her class...best part was when the TA brought in her infant and we could see the infant's level of development in person. She offered extra credit when I took the class, so it was pretty easy.
entertaining, really knows her stuff. her tests were harder. she actually brought babies in for us to watch. great class
I took this class last year but just wanted to say she's a really down-to-earth professor! She's genuinely caring! Focus in lecture as this is the key to acing exams. The book is rather useless in this case but some questions will be on the exam.
Pretty much impossible to do well on tests unless you memorize the entire book. Her lectures are babbling about completely irrelevant topics and she gives no study guide or review. good luck with that. She is nice but if I would've know her class would be such a pain I would have never even taken it.
Three exams and a final (drops lowest exam score) format. ALOT of reading, and probably ~5 questions out of 50 will be on the exams. Not difficult subject, just time consuming. Paper also due, and she did give a 10pt extra credit assignment (alot when exams are worth 50pts each). That sums up the class, you decide.
I do NOT like this subject, but I enjoy her lectures. Her tests are very fair, and she drops the lowest score. THere is a lot of reading, so this class is time consuming but not difficult. I reccomend.
excellent teacher, i wasnt interested in the subject but now i am. she makes the lectures interesting an has lots of good examples to make the topics clear. def take this class from her
Nice enough, but tests were ridiculous unless you memorized the book, they would include partially right answers along with right answers for multiple choice...very time consuming, definitely worth it to take 101 with another prof
It's a good class. Read the book to get a good grade on the tests.
Questions on exams are specific, but do-able. Pretty much in class you copy down her powerpoints. Easy to understand lectures. Take this class with Heyman if you neeed a core class!
Dr. Heyman is a sweet lady, with the friendly, I-lov-bonus-points aura typical of most psych teachers (lol). After a year in hell of hardcore chemistry, her class was so relaxing for me. Exams are not tricky, and are based on lecture, and a little bit of light reading. Loved her class, highly recommended.
Wonderful lecturer. Really keeps your attention. Very clear on everything. Even bring kids to class as examples. Exam questions are VERY specific (in fact, too specific), however, that you MUST read the book in order to pass. You can drop one of the exams though so I dropped the final.
read the book, attend lecture, easy A - enjoyable too!
Heyman is a great teacher. Pretty easy A, keeps your attention and knows her stuff. Tests are 50% book 50% lecture. MUST READ THE BOOK. I would suggest a laptop to write down side notes of what she said in class not just power point. Read over her past test. Her tests are specific, but you'll get a feel after the first.
The standards are set unrealistically high...93+ is an A. She assigns way too much reading. Instead of lessening the reading because of fire week, she crammed it all in before the third midterm, so it left us with almost 200 pages of reading to do...kind of ridiculous. Her exam questions are specific (mentioned something briefly in lecture).
She's a great professor. Pay attention to examples in her lectures because it WILL be on the exam. The exams are 50% lecture and 50% text book. Do the reading assignments, attend class, and review the previous exams that she posts on her website and you'll do fine...
Great professor! Classes are pretty interesting and grading system is amazing...4 tests but she drops 1. Tests are really easy if you read the book and go to class (1/2 from book, 1/2 from class). There's a lot of reading each week though.
Great class and professor, totally enjoyed it! Getting an A is possible if you do ALL the reading, review/attend all lectures in detail. I took notes from reading the book because she pulls specific experiment examples from there on the test for questions. I completely recommend her and the class as well-worth taking!
GO THROUGH THE SLIDES VERY FAST TO FAST NEED TO SLOW DOWN MIDTERMS FAIR PREPARE A LOT OF READING 1/2 READING AND 1/2 LECTURE NOTES. STUDY HARD TO PASS.
Dr. Heyman is a nice woman. But she speaks very quickly and although she says so much stuff with so much detail sometimes, it still isn't quite clear what she is really trying to get across. The tests are pretty picky, but using past midterms make doing well in the class easy. But you do need to do all the reading and attend lectures, no joke.
She is very passionate both about her research and teaching. She really wants you to learn, and her detailed exams reflect that. Reading AND lectures are a must. It is a challenging class which is great for psych majors. It is a lot of work so you might not want to take it for GE. Her slides are not bad at all. If you can't keep up go to State.
this is class is really an easy A. just like the previous comments, all you need to do is go to class, take her notes, and read the book. one of the easiest A's i've ever gotten.
Talks increasingly faster as she carries away on tangents. Makes it hard to follow what point she's trying to make. 3 midterms and 1 final, all multiple choice and worth the same amount. Takes the top 3 scores for your grade. To prepare for exams, just read ALL DETAILS in the book VERY carefully, and do the practice tests she provides online.
She is a great professor! I don't like psych and she makes everything very clear...expects a lot out of you but definitely doable! I got an A but I worked for it...her tests are pretty hard so you have to know your stuff...i would definitely suggest her as a professor
I mean, she was a good teacher and she knew her stuff but her tests even though she drops the lowest one, are hard. I did all the practice tests (3 of them) and there was only 2 question on the actual midterm which made me have to drop that test. Very detail oriented and uses random questions from lecture on the test, I wouldn't take her,
Her tests are way too specific and detail oriented!!
She has serious issues with her tests. Half her questions you only know the answer if you go to class and read the obscure parts. Even if you really know child development, you prob still fail the class. She likes questions where it's "this example shows this" ie "in the back part of the book, the author uses the US map as a metaphor for" (real que
she's a nice teacher and all, i learned a lot, but her tests are ridiculous and not in a fair or good way.
She's a nice caring person, but a horrible teacher. She pulls out random tiny details from the book/lecture that you would never think to memorize. She needs to make her tests easier! Also if u miss lecture, you're screwed because she tests on her little stupid stories.
It's really funny to me how all psyc majors complain when they actually have to WORK for their grade for once. Just read & attend all lectures. Wow, hard work huh? This is UCSD, not a CC. Get it right.
It's really funny to me how all psyc majors complain when they actually have to WORK for their grade for once. Just read & attend all lectures. Wow, hard work huh? This is UCSD, not a CC. Get it right.
Best professor I've ever had at UCSD. Extremely interesting, intelligent, and coherent. Unlike many classes, you do have to attend lecture AND read the book, because she doesn't lecture straight from the book. However, exams really aren't too difficult and she drops the lowest test score. She's awesome.
The lectures are boring. Her tests are ridiculous. She will have questions about her stupid little stories. Also about details in the book like the little boxes that give additional details. She wastes questions the "ensure" you read the book instead of focusing on concepts about the course itself.
A genuinely nice professor. She lectures well and really cares about students. You absolutely HAVE to read textbook and attent lecture. She doesn't podcast, and her exams consists of about 50% lecture exclusive material and 50% textbook exclusive material. Unfortunately, developmental psychology isn't my interest, so studying was pretty painful.
At first, she might be impressive with her lecture, but it is horrible when it comes to her test. She stress too much on the textbook that the lecture seems to be useless. If you are caring about good grades, this class might not be a good decision...
Great teacher! Very good at helping you understand all the concepts of and experiments done in developmental psych. You need to attend class because she doesn't put up podcasts, and you need to read the book because she puts questions straight from the book (that aren't in her lectures) on the tests. Drops the lowest test score out of 4 inc. final!
If you have a passion for children or developmental psychology you will love this class. The videos she shows in class to demonstrate important concepts or research are always adorable. Sometimes it may seem like she is going on a tangent, but don't be surprised if you see it on an exam. Cover your bases (reading and lecture) and you will do well!
Easy class if you do the reading and attend lecture. Test questions are very detailed but the reading is not hard. It is just long but I found it interesting. A lot of the class seems to just be giving fancy name. To common sense concepts. 4 midterms, drop lowest score and an extra credit opportunity.
Professor is a wreck during class. Tests are pretty fair though and she posts practice questions that are VERY similar to the actual test. Extra credit paper is a plus.
Her lectures are very organized and simple and easy to understand. The tests are very detailed but possible if you attend lecture take notes about her examples and read and take notes from the text book. to receive an A you need 93+%. the final is cumulative so do well on the first 3 tests so you dont have to take it. overall, i liked this class.
Attendance is necessary - she posts her slides online, but they're more like outlines which she won't really test on, so make sure you go to class and take thorough notes. Exam questions are 50% from lecture and 50% from the book and not very difficult as long as you read the book and go to class. Great prof. overall
Go to class, read the book, study the practice exams and you'll get an A. And take the extra credit paper seriously. Easy class.
Dr. Heyman's Lectures interactive and easy to follow. A lot of memorizing. Absolutely must read the book in order to get higher than a C. You will NOT pass if you don't attend lecture. If you are passionate about children this is your class!. 3 midterms and a final, if you're satisfied with your 3 midterm scores you don't have to take the final!
if you want an A, do NOT take her. No matter how hard you study and understand the materials, you will struggle because her tests are ridiculously and unnecessarily detail. I find her ridiculous to have students read hundreds of pages of textbook, with no specific focus, and test them on tiny details that only God knows the answers.
Dr. Heyman is absolutely amazing! Her lectures are interesting and she shows a lot of cute and fun videos. Yes you have to attend lecture.. yes you have to do the reading. You're in college get over it. Her tests are detailed but if you do both of those things you will succeed. She also lets you drop one exam as well offering an extra credit essay.
She will ask you about the examples she gives in lectures, about discussions that were made on a specific topic, and about the videos she shows in class and her comments on them. YES her tests are THAT detailed. You have to read A LOT from the textbook but only 10 questions out of 40 on the test will be related to it. Interesting material, doable!
She is an awesome professor. She is obviously passionate about the subject, which makes learning that much easier. The concepts aren't hard, but she tests you on examples brought up during class, as well as really small details from the book. If you keep up with going to class, taking good notes, and doing the readings, you will find it an easy A.
She's very nice and approachable during office hour and after class, she's also very eager to answer questions in class and facilitates discussion. Her midterms and finals contain mostly lecture-based question. Its tough if you miss her conclusion or comment on a certain topic or video (yes, there are questions about videos)
Her exam is ridiculous. You have to study and read every single boxes on the textbook. Her exams are not relevant to the materials that much.
Be aware to remember questions every students asked questions could be exam questions. Memorize everything from the textbook.
Her class is ridiculous. As a student that pays attention in lecture, reads the book, and does the practice exams, I still never know half the answers on her exams. Its so specific and not related to Developmental Psychology. She will ask questions about boxed text in the book. Like what? Its like she is performing a psychology experiment on us.
Honestly. I'm really surprised she has decent reviews. At this point I feel like she's developed tunnel vision to just create "new questions." It's just absurdly stupid how her exams are structured. They're not even conceptual anymore. They're about one line examples from the text and that one question a student asked in class. She doesnt podcast.
She honestly is one of the best and nicest professors I've met, and yes, the exams are extremely difficult and you have to pay attention to a lot of details in class to score a good grade. But if you don't procrastinate and just do the reading alongside the lectures in class an A is not hard.
A lot of ?s are based purely on whether you where in class that day or not. So I recommend printing out the notes beforehand and writing as much notes as you can on the examples (not in lecture notes) given and videos watched. Some ?s on exam can only be answered if you read. Non-traditional test questions. Great lecturer and caring.
Professor Heyman is interesting. Her lectures are very engaging and interesting, but like others I will agree that her tests are bizzare. You need to make sure you go to every class and pay attention to specific studies. Same goes for the textbook. It takes some getting used to but once you know what to pay attention to, her class is pretty easy
Professor Heyman is definitely interesting. You have to go to lectures and you have to read the book in order to get an A. I feel that for her tests, it's more about whether or not you memorized every single sentence of the textbook and everything mentioned in he lecture. Her tests are definitely very very bizarre.
I loved Heyman so much. Every lecture she was excited to share new studies & info with us. She is very approachable & kind. I almost didnt take this class bc of some of the reviews, but regarding the tests, if you just write down every example from class & videos, read the textbook, & practice w past exams they arent hard (unpopular opinion I know)
Horrible test should be curved
Excellent professor/lectures. Pay close attention to everything she says during lecture even if its not included on the lecture slides. Also pay attention to the questions asked by classmates during class b/c she'll probably include it on the exams. Read assigned chapters, material's on exams. I made flashcards using lecture slides/notes&textbook.
The online class structure is pretty good, the grade isn't just based on exams. She offers extra credit as well. The only issue with this class is the exam questions are horrible. Its like you must remember EVERY word from lecture or you can't get an A. She doesn't even test us on the psychological concepts but rather super specific random points.
I loved this class so much! The exams were an interesting format, but with online learning I can see why she made them that way. Dr. Heyman has such a motherly vibe, I never felt anxious doing work for her class. Definitely take her class if you are passionate about dev psych! She has interesting research and is all around amazing.!
ugh this class was not what I expected exams are SO specific i never got higher than a B which sucks cus i put effort in them i only got an A - bc of extra credit i wud not take again but shes so nice and wise and her TAs are nice too.
Dr. Heyman is very kind and amazing. The homework she gives out are easy and she makes the topics easy to understand. She is very passionate about Developmental Psychology and I love that about her. If you ever get a chance to take her class, do so!
Gail is a great prof. & very knowledgeable & experienced in her field of dev. psych. That being said, for a 101 level class, she requires you to have 100% to earn an A+. The exam questions are intentionally misleading, and often have errors and poor grammar, making the context unclear. Get ready to read 12 articles and listen to hours of lecture.
Felt like this was the professors first time in a classroom. She gives zero study materials for her quizzes and exams. She does not record her lectures so she expects you to memorize every lecture because that is what you are tested on. When students asked any kind of question (about the material or testing) she would never give a direct answer.
Heyman is nice and caring. As a professor, she has a very roundabout and repetitive way of lecturing. Exams are ridiculous as they are based on stories that she tells in class and she does not podcast, so it's hard to write everything down. Review sessions were useless as well. Exams had terrible grammar and were so difficult to understand.
This professor is so sweet and authentic. She knows her material super well and is excited to share and help others learn. The exams are weird, heavily based on what she says during lecture that are not on the slides, so take good notes. Don't wait until the last week to do the outside-of-class stuff. Extra credit is available.
Exams were simple and covered the online lecture content. Quizzes were much more difficult and covered the in class content. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Professor Heyman genuinely wants the best for you, she's flexible, and the course content is interesting in itself as well. Highly recommend.
I found the online exams to be harder than the in person quizzes. They were definitely hard though because some questions were tricky questions. I enjoyed lecture and discussions. There is no way you can pass this class without studying though. Highly recommend this class though! and definitely do not procrastinate.
There are only so many things graded and if you're someone who doesn't do well on tests, I personally don't recommend her. Her tests are weirdly structured and are on specific points she has made in her class, not about basic concepts. Very condescending, you can try to participate in class but she will most likely ignore you.
75% of your grade comes from two exams. All questions are multiple choice but she words the questions so weirdly in an attempt to "trick" you. All questions are from random points and student questions from lectures so take lots of notes. Oh and lectures are not recorded.
She is definitely a rude person. She has an energy like "oo, I am too experienced for this class and to handle you, please do not waste my time." Also, she is great at giving anxiety to others, I feel like I am on the edge of a cliff whenever I discuss something with her. I think there is a retirement time for everyone, and hers has already passed
This class was so incredibly fulfilling and I learned SO much in just 10 weeks. Even months later I still think back to it on a regular basis since it's so applicable to human life. You definitely do need to come to class and take detailed notes but once you do the tests are straightforward. She's also very knowledgable/respected. Take it!!
Condescending attitude toward students. The majority of your grade is based on the midterms and final. Her exams don't test your comprehension of the material. Instead, they are oddly specific questions about something she said one time during a lecture that wasn't listed on the slides. She does not podcast her lectures.
Gail was a great mentor during my time in her class and afterwards at UCSD, she clearly values being a mentor to students and is a great professor to go to office hours even just to talk with about Psychology, Life, Research, ect. Liked the class but the lectures are important and not a class you can skip and watch like many students do.
I took this class my first semester, it was hybrid which was confusing & I had to study more than normal but I passed with an A. She is incredibly busy which makes her appear scattered but she's a true professional & knows her stuff! I was in her lab as well, I learned so much, she is awesome & wrote me a reference letter. I recommend her class.
Professor Heyman is amazing, and her lectures are super interesting. However, if you miss even one class you will not be able to answer questions related to it on the midterm and final. Also, questions are less application-based and more focused on small details in the lectures.
I wouldn't take this class if you know you're gonna miss a few. She's a sweet person but the entire lecture is different research videos that she finds that are meant to be “examples” but they're all you're tested on. You won't be tested on like your understanding of course content, you just need to know what happened in those research videos.
I liked her, she was sweet. Her tests were kinda weird, as most of it was quizzing you on super specific examples/details she mentions in class. It was a good class overall though.
she's a good professor, I just didn't show up to lectures which is why I did bad. Her exams are based off lectures and she expects you to remember the lectures and not the actual concepts. I memorized and understood the concept so well but I just didn't know the lecture matireal. Def will retake and go to her lectures lol
DO NOT TAKE HER. Her exams are extremely tricky, based heavily on specific things she mentions in lectures and overly detailed questions about concepts. Every answer on the exam seems plausible, making you second-guess yourself and your knowledge. You must know every research example inside and out to pass. First C in my whole academic career.
Dr. Heyman is a kind person, but her class is very test-focused. There are three exams based on her lectures, and the questions are often tricky, with all the answer choices appearing plausible. Instead of testing broader concepts, she emphasizes specific details from her lectures. Personally, I would not take her class again.
very tricky tests and heavily focused on exact details from lectures, and only read off the board the entire lecture.
NO. I drove without my seatbelt in hopes of not making it to class. Never have I second guessed myself so much on exams. Tests based purely on what she specifically comments on lectures. Don't take unless you are going to memorize hours of her dialect.
Exam questions are mcq and VERY specific - can be anywhere from vocabulary to a specific example she mentioned one time in passing. But prac exams are useful to learn her question style, so they are still manageable. Lectures are well paced + clear, just pay attention to every video/example shown. Small details > general concepts on the exams 🥲
I don't really know how she's ever gotten any good reviews. More than half of the test content is basically "One time I said..." It's not about any actual material and her structure is a complete mess. Save urself the time and effort.
Test are heavily based on lecture. Manageable if you attend and pay attention to lecture. No recordings. Lectures are super interesting.
I believe that She genuinely has our best interest in her heart. I really enjoyed taking this class with her and I feel as if her lectures were pretty straight forward and easy to follow. If You show up to class pay attention to the lectures do the homework and take notes it should be a straight forward A.
Professor Heyman is very involved in developmental psych and really knows what she is talking about, but I feel her lectures are weak. A lot of the time she just reads off the slides, and she spends a lot of time talking about research confounds which feels irrelevant. 3 exams and lowest gets dropped with some easy hw for points. Not too difficult
I was worried about this class when I looked at her rate my professor, but I really enjoyed taking it. She doesn't podcast and she does test on specific things she mentions in lecture. However, her lectures are very engaging, and her practice tests show what kinds of questions she asks, so I found the exams pretty easy!
