Her sex and gender class is awesome. Great teacher with lots of passion.
She is a great person w/lots of brain; only easy if u can open ur mind
No Comments
She never lectures on the material and her tests are awful. Not a good class to take for an "A"
teacher uses class for her own political agenda, very little taught about sociology, ALL about her extreme leftest politics thinks her views are the only ones worth teaching and discussing. NOT openminded. If you want to learn sociology take someone else
all we did in this class was talk the entire period with her, and never about anything that helped us with the class. interesting and fun: yes. helpful or informative: NO! she does not teach, ever, she just assigns. awful teacher and she isn't hot.
i took this class during the war.it was all she talked about.never went over material in the book, never explained basic concepts of sex and gender.i hear she's still the same. take amber katherine (wom st) and preciado (soc1) for a better view on gender.
she tries to send an intimidating image but she is not too of an open minded feminist. she makes the course difficult in her negative teaching methods.

excelent teacher easy A
No Comments
this was the easiest A. she just gave away points when ever she would make a small mistake. not very organized but interesting.
Gives a lot of extra credit opportunites. You can just show up and do the work and get a B. Cancells class a lot. Okay teacher.
Not very open minded, cancels a lot of classes, and doesn't teach. Expects you to know everything, doesn't ask important questions on tests, and is very leftest. The only reason you should take this is if you like torturing yourself.
I felt I didn't learn anything new, and I read the book front to back, which is essential to your grade. Perhaps, it is the format of the curriculum that does not motivate intelligible satisfaction. I am a feminist.

Very open minded, knowledgable and fair. Class is pretty easy, all you have to do is do the study guide and the reports, she grades easily and class is interesting, highly recomend.
Prof Livings was a good teacher--she was a super libral lady but good nonetheless. I didn't buy the book and I PAID for it by getting a C! As long as you have the book and read it, her class is fairly adequate.
Prof. Livingston is pretty cool. Sometimes her voice might make you sleep(very calm), but she's awesome.A liberal feminist..what more can you want?!She informs u and gets u involved in world events.Extra credit to attend police brutality march. Just r
Interesting lectures but her tests weren't really on any of them. It's all about the books but the assigned sections are unclear. She generally isn't thorough, and sometimes she doesn't show up to class without warning. Wanted us to march in rally for grade. Seems more about giving her bias opinon.
She hardly ever lectured on the text, all she did was talk about the war and current events, which was ok but I would have liked the class better if she had lectured on the text.
The teacher missed so many classes during my semester to go on war protests. Lectures very unclear, never really discussed anything from the book. I had a hard time understanding what was going on.
Really cool teacher, she does miss a lot of classes but the class is really interesting...Easy A...I learned a lot and she shows some really cool films...Strongly recommended
Great teacher! Her intelligence and social responsibilty makes up for the 2 whole days that she missed in an entire semester.
I agree 100% with the comments below. Her lectures are boring, irrevelant to exams most of the time. Difficult to follow class, because she's gone a lot.
Bad teacher, take another prof. if you can. Dosen't lecture, but only talks about the war. Test are hard and about very detailed thing from the reading and nothing from lecture or films. If you are going to take her be prepaired to not make a fair grade. She is more concerned about current affairs then the subject matter.
TERRIBLE!! I almost lost total faith in SMC for hiring her. I don't know where she gets off calling herself a teacher - she should be a cop. Regurgitates text and lets the vcr teach her class - no real opinions allowed! DO NOT TAKE HER X 10000!

HORRIBLE!!! I can't say this enough. It's as if there is no point at all going to class because it had NOTHING to do with the tests. The most pointless class EVER. I listened to lectures/ videos, did the study guides, and had to beg my way for a D. PATHETIC!
her lectures were interesting, but here exams were never on the lectures. That made it extremely hard to pass the exams, because none of it was ever reviewed. she never clearly told us what to review, so most people in the class were clueless!

really intelligent and self confident but a bit intimidating. an uncompromising feminist with a clear understanding of the politics of gender and economic oppression. super militant! lots of debate and she will shut you down if youre ignorant. really clearly explains material and encourages students to become politically active. not approachable.
her class was horrible ! she canceled the class a lot and she seems more interested to talk about war than what's on the book for the next exam. her lecture was very2 boring, esp when u hav no clue what she's talking about. i simply regret to take this class... cos she never teach !!
Somewhat intimidating. Very intelligent woman. I learned a lot in the class but talks more about war than anything else. She is a very good debater and loves what she does. Do not take this class as the only class of the day because she cancels sometimes. her tests are always open notes, so is the final, and the video quizzes are easy.
professor livings is a very powerful woman, she knows what she is talking about and makes every effort for you to understand where she is coming from. however she cancels class often and when class is in session there are plently of video quizes. she gives a ton of extra credit if you do poorly on the exams which are open book/note or take home.
Prof. Livings is an interesting person. This class started off well. Towards the end, I think she became disinterested in teaching. Fairly easy course, but if you're interested in learning something, don't take her. I was very confused after taking this course. There was no point in coming to class. Waste of time.
i dreaded coming to class...she canceled class 6 times this semester and pushed out midterm back 4 times. i think she became uninterested in teaching as we got further on into the semester because she came to class one day without a lesson plan!!! if you like to watch videos then take her...the discussions were pretty interesting though!!!!
It's true that she did cancel class more than any other prof that I had...but there was always a good reason for it. She is active in alot of things around the city, which students can get involved in too for extra credit. She and her lectures are fun and if you show up and do your practice questions the tests are totally easy.
The WORST teacher ever. barely talked about the subject. always talked about police brutality, war, and other bs that has nothing to do with sociology. Canceled classes w/out any notifications. again, THE WORST TEACHER EVER! SMC should really get rid of her.
She rocks. Yes, she's definitely to the left and makes her views clear, but c'mom..we're living in LA...who isn't a liberal?(dont answer that) Anyways, her class is informative and she motivates students to be active...in whatever their cause is. I recommend her.
I agree, she is the worst teacher ever. You will learn no sociology from her lecutre.
Does not teach anything about Sciology only lecutres about her political views. Does not respect other sides and misses class nearly all the time. Clearly Feminist and if you have male sexual organs your views are not as important but girls feel free easy A
You can tell exactly which feedback comments are from males and which ones are from females. Obviously, when she kisses the girls' feet, they'll say better things about her.. but boys, she won't answer your emails or give you a good grade unless you make your answers sound like women are better than men.

Gail Livings what a character only teaches one side doesn't come to class, if you are male you might as well not take her class because you are wrong, and her lectures all focus on her pure hatred of men and how they have destroyed society just for the record not bitter got an A in her class BEWARE

She limits the focus of this class on gender roles in the context of WAR, which I wasn't aware of when I signed up. The subject matter is DULL and the textbook she uses goes into ridiculous detail about the most mundane subjects. She is VERY biased. I am a liberal female and I was very put off by her teaching OPINION as fact. Pain-in-the-ass.
All quizzes are on watching a video and answering questions. Study guides are exactly what are on the tests. All tests are short answer questions. She gives extra credit. She has her degree from Georgetown and knows a lot about the military.
If you are not interested in learning the material and only interested in completing your IGETC, then this is the teacher for you. She gives you the actual questions that will be on her 50 question multiple choice tests. She also gives the answers, but very quickly, but you can also get it out of the textbook. She missed many classes.
i don't know about sociology class, but i took women studies 10 w/ her and she was fantastic, she shows a bunch of videos and stuff, answer 4 questions or maybe 6 for video and turn in. that's it! go to class, and just sit there. Great class. good teacher.
I took her for Socio 1 & 33 (1995/96). She was okay in socio 1 but you find out that she hates men. In socio 33, she really made it hard for any males in class. She has issues that she needs to resolve. Every girl in the class got a B or A but guys got C or lower.
She has opinions. Yes, I am a female however, the comment made on how she is biased towards men and gives them worse grades is a load of crap. She respects all students who have an opinion and if she disagrees she will tell you. Most men don't like to be told that they are wrong hence the reason for her bad reviews. Opened my mind up to the world
I'm sorry to report that Ms. Livings is the worst professor i've ever had. she rarely showed up to class and when she did she was unprepared. nothing was acomplished during the class period. Furthermore she never respons to students e-mails. BEWARE: don't take this class!
how could you not like this teacher? she's a intelligent woman who knows her stuff. you'll get a good grade as long as you study for the tests. she also provides a lot of extra credits!!!
love professor Livings. she's the best!!!
i didn't learn a thing in her class....some ppl got A's from just turning extra credit...if you just want to get an A take her class...you just don't learn anything from her
Great teacher. Do the extra credit, go to class, take notes, do the study guides and you can succeed!!!!
she's very smart, but is so unorganized that you don't learn a thing in her class. all you do is watch videos and answer questions. sometimes there are cool discussions, but they don't go anywhere. this class is such a joke. she comes late all the time and will cancel the class at the last minute. if you really want to learn, read feminist lit.
She is very smart but is extremely boring. She speaks in only one tone of voice and shows no enthusiasm in her profession. She does not care if you come in late, leave early, or not come at all. She takes no roll. Just show your face and do the 4-5 quizzes during the semester and you are good. She grades by the book. Very marginal class.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MISS LIVINGS! SHE'S THE BEST. NOT AN EASY A, BUT POSSIBLE.
Babbles on/goes on left wing rants that have little to do with the subject matter, then gives you tests that are pretty challenging. She is smart but unorganized and kind of looney.
ok, ms. livings is a really nice once you get through her, let's just say, tough and feminist shell. As far as teaching, though, she sucks. Does whatever possible to get out of teaching. will tell you to pick a section, get in groups; then she leaves for 45 mins. comes back and makes the students 'teach'. pathetic, unoriginal, no creativity .
It's a self teaching class. Her lectures are extremely interesting;however, have no relation to what is on the exams. She hands out the questions that will be on the exams a couple days before. The questions are verbatim from the text. Just find the answer and fill in the blank. Alot of people got B's tho.
She's a smart woman w/ many great ideas but not a whole lot of them have to do w/ sociology.I learned almost nothing about sociology & alot about the war & US foreign policies.Open books exams, video quizzes, splitting up into study groups so she doesn't have to teach.Cancels class alot.If you're not concerned w/ learning sociology, it's an easy A.
I wasn't aware that this class would be COMPLETELY based on the context of WAR. I learnt a lot more in WS10 with Mel Klein. Turn in extra credit and work hard on the two group take-homes and you'll get the A. Pretty easy because there are no strict rules, but hard to know whether you'll get an A or not because there are no clear guidelines. I got A
This was an easy class but you have to read the book which is a dry read but gets better half way thru. She is an excellent teacher and tells you exactly what she expects. She teaches you to be independent and think on your own --'wake up'-- and not be spoon fed by the gov't or media. I wish she taught other classes.
Worst teacher ever. Nothing you do in class has to do with whats on the exam. Extremly unorginized, and heartless. Got a D. Don't take her class, shes the only one that teachers it ....so if u fail ur stuck with her for another sememster:(
A very interesting prof., however, her lectures have absolutely nothing to do with the exams. The text book is a very dry read and for the first few weeks the class was a discussion on the readings which helped everyone's underestanding. After awhile the classes turned into her ranting and nothing relevant to the course was discussed.
At first I thought this class was really interesting but after the first test the class went down hill. She is a very nice professor but really unpredictable. She cancelled class alot. I really don't feel I learned one thing in this class. I was really disappointed in this professor. I wouldn't recommend taking her class.
Terrible, terrible teacher! If you have any interest in Women's Studies, do not take this teacher. Does not come to class and does not let you know ahead od time. Tests are extremely difficult, even though some are open book. The book she uses is terrible. Answer keys are wrong on tests, and she will not review them. Complete waste of time.
Such a disappointment! This was a course I really wanted to take, and Prof Livings really "phoned it in". She would ramble on about things unrelated to class most of the time, she did not "teach" anything, she would tell you what would be on a test but never discuss or "teach" any of it. She often put on a video and left. Cancelled class often.
She teacher you to think critically and to ask questions. Don't take her class if you like thinking she teaches in a way that will have you questioning and double checking a lot of things in society. If you want to be bottle fed this is not the class for you. Pay attention to the reviews before test and you'll be cool.
No syllabus. No attendance. Must check e-mail daily for class cancellations. Open book tests. Not one assignment or test was returned. Nice woman, good intentions, but extremely unorganized. More class/gender/race relations than specifically women's studies. I did learn a few things. Good class for slackers, not for overachievers.
PS:WASSSSSSSSSSSSTE OF TIME. I NEED A BETTER TEACHER, SMC IS DOING WRONG FOR HAVING ONE TEACHER FOR A SUBJECT, THEY SHOULD HAVE HER CHECKED
Don't take any class with this teacher! interesting class, but dumb teacher! Always cancelling classes at the last minute! Always late to class and sometimes ****! plays music while you take the test, won't concentrate......won't go over test, will make you do stupid things.... DON'T TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER!
by far the worst teacher i have ever had. we never opened the book once and she just cancels classes and she just talks about things that have nothing to do with sociology
7 test each test has 3 chapters non cumulative drops the lowest test 1 of them is open book, a lot of extra credit, you don't need to buy the textbook just buy the study guide and use the internet guide and it's a DEFINITE B with that. Easy class fun professor
Ok I will not lie, she is an ok teacher if you keep up with current events her experiments are fun but still she never goes over the book with the class her discussions in class have nothing to do with the chapter you read! so i recommend you not take her class unless your super smart!
this class and professor seemed intriguing at first. i came from el camino college thinking i would know what to expect, yet looking for a change. apparently professors like to start their intros 4weeks into the class without respect to the course. this prof. in particular decided to revise the entire curriculum 4 weeks in. revamping the syllabus
attendance is mand. yet there is no actual involvment in the class. most of the course is reading and video quiz and "reflection essays". i find that this class is a complete waste of time b/c although there is no use in attending due to low involvement you have to go to figure out what is going on. she doesn't respond to emails.and highly
unapprachable, has an extreme feminist quality to her.hard to tell her mood. thought it would be an easy A but 90% of class is videos and video quizzes with reflection papers that come from the ambiguous reading. no class discussion, which would be alot more beneficial. redid the entire course 4 weeks in. not satisfied do not take her.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES. If you are interested int eh subject she is teaching, go to another teacher. We only talked about the war in her lecture and then tests you on what she was suppose to have taught you. STAY AWAY
Seems intelligent but clearly had other priorities than teaching. Class participation is based on in-class videos and video quizzes therefore attendance is a must.Mass amount of reading material is required for reflection papers, realistically you only need to read the chapter intro?s therefore the textbooks are a must. You drop your lowest score.
Although it's an easy class, it isn't a good one. You will talk about current events rather than anything that has to do with the class. The professor is extremely unorganized and changes her mind at the last min regarding tests, assignments, etc. She doesn't show up to class regularly. You will be confused half the time about what's going on.
bad. hard. do not take her. not worth your time. i had a 4.0 before her.
im in her online class- 2 weeks until semesters end & only 8 out of 32 assignments graded (which she posted yesterday). never at her office hours, doesnt respnd to personal emails, didnt even make a syllabus until 3.5 weeks in. she sends ~35pg study guides (photocopied from the book) a few days before a test, thats the only time youll use the book.
WARNING:If you have male genitalia there will be a biased towards you in this room. She's a super-liberal feminist and most females attending are as well. Any man will be immediately hated if they disagree or voice any dissenting opinions; I speak from experience. The class can be informative at times but if you want to pass just be quiet and agree
Worst. Teacher. Ever. Completely unorganized. Doesn't teach you ANYTHING that's on the test. In fact, she doesn't teach you anything at all. The entire class is made of the students making presentations to teach the class. And to make matters worse, they don't even cover what's on the test. Also, she's an EXTREME feminist. I was happy to be female!
Absolutely a horrible teacher. I was expecting to learn about Sociology, as it is an interest, but she did not teach. She was absent numerous times of only 6 weeks. She talked about her extreme liberal-feminist and atheist views practically the whole time. I received an A in the class, but the "teacher" is a waste of time. Do not take this teacher!
I took Socio 1 online and she did not even make a syllabus until a few weeks into the class. I got an A because I did all of the assignments and got extra credit, plus did well on tests because of the study guide, but this was the most unorganized class I've ever taken and she did not teach at all.
I had Professor Livings for Spring 2011 for Womens Studies, i was taking the class to have 12 units and wow most stressful class ever. She is so unorganized, doesnt care much about the students or yet alone what we are supposed to be learning. She rarely ever referenced to the books. She never replies to emails. BEWARE !
taking her summer class whatever you do dont take her! doesnt know how to effectively teach womens studies! boring, all we do is listen to her ramble and lecture straight out of the book. gives study guides for the tests the night before. her tests are super tricky and so far there have been mistakes in the scantron grading key.take klein instead!
One of the worst professors I've taken a class from. She is terribly disorganized which will end up bringing your grade down. She makes the test questions tricky and doesn't care about her students. She doesn't care if anyone succeeds..even the best students in the class couldn't receive an A. Stay away!!
She's very scatter-brained when it comes to the logistics of the course (syllabus, showing up on time, etc), BUT she is very smart and engages you in interesting discussion. VERY easy, tests are made up of the study guide she gives you. No reason not to get an A!
Professor Livings is an awesome teacher and sociologist. She is very intelligent and wants you to think critically. Current events are important and used to give examples of the theories in the text. I guess you have to be good at working independently to do well in the class.
Some people don't like Livings because she can be quite frank or mean sometimes. But I love her. Really interesting class. Only down side is she likes to give a lot of "busy" work and essays. But if you read the book and pay attention it is impossible to fail her test. If you are a slacker and don't like essays and work don't take this class. :)
LIVINGS IS EXTREMELY BORING AND SHE CANNOT EVER BE PREPARED BUT ONE THING HER CLASS IS.. IS SUPER EASY! SHE GIVES YOU STUDY GUIDES AND U BASICALLY HAVE TO STUDY AND MEMORIZE THEM AND YOU GET AN A ON THE EXAMS!! I GOT AN A WITHOUT EVER DOING ANYTHING BESIDES MEMORIZING THE STUDY GUIDES. TAKE HER FOR AN EASY A.
Prof Livings is a great teacher. Lectures are clear and interesting and she is helpful. Very passionate about the subject. Takes her a long time to post the grades, but that's the only complain.
Straight forward class. Weekly grade is based on a current event, reading quiz, video "quiz" which are just 5 questions about the video and then a test. Tests are easy if you really read because the questions are based only on the book. Same routine throughout semester. No final or midterm.
EXTREMLY WONDERFUL TEACHER I LOVE HER SO MUCH SHE GIVES WOMEN IN THE CLASS THE ABILITY TO HAVE A VOICE IN THE IDEAS OF OUR SOCIETY AND HER CLASS TEACHS USE HOW TO APPLY SOCIAL THINKING TO EVERYDAY LIFE
Really cool teacher. I enjoyed every minute of her class because she is funny and quite entertaining
Awesome professor, passionate about the topic. Easy grading.
uhmm...she doesn't lecture at all. she only talks about politics (which is interesting) but you have to read the chapters in detail on you own for the tests.she will never talk about the book. She does give extra credit though
5 tests 5 quizes. Drops lowest score on both. No final no midterm. test 50 MC. quizez can get up to 5 extra credit points. She randomly gives extra credit. you just talk and play games really easy. read the book to study. EASY A TAKE THIS CLASS!
I really like this professor. You have to self teach a lot but hey she's preparing you for a university! She very fair and very nice if you ever want to talk to her.
SOC33 Winter 2013, obviously fast paced, it's only 6 weeks. LOTS OF READING and her quizzes are strictly from the book so read thoroughly & memorize everything. She must do some major curving because I passed none of her quizzes (yes they're beyond tricky) and I got a B in her class. Be prepared to READ FOR DAYS. But she's funny and so intelligent
She does not teach much. If you want to get an A read the textbook and do the study guides. It takes effort, and if you are willing to learn on your own then you will be just fine. Must warn you that class has nothing to do with the material in the textbook and on tests
Professor Livings is a pretty decent instructor. She is a very clever women but class can be boring! Test are mult. choice (STUDY GUIDES DONT HELP) I took her in the summer (6 weeks) so it is very fast paced. No lectures are on the reading, so you MUST read and learn EVERYTHING on a chapter prior to the test. Little to no homework. Just study!!!
Prof. Livings is hilarious. She is smart and sassy and I enjoyed her class immensely. Like a slightly aged Thelma&Louise type lady, intimidating at first, but enjoys her students and wants to hear your opinion. Easy class, always interesting. Only minus is tests focus a lot on textbook (which you don't read in class), and can be unclear/confusing.
This class is relatively easy. She takes attendance the first few classes, but after that going class really is pointless. Anything on tests is completely in the textbook; basically no relevant material is covered in lecture. There are inclass video quizzes, which are super easy and then a few small papers. She's a strong and funny teacher.
Livings is the epitome of a sociology professor. She isn't too well prepared or organized (expect late grades posted) but she is passionate and knows what she's talking about. Very liberal and any interest in social movements or opportunities to "get involved" will make you a favorite. 5 exams, all reading, 5 vid quiz. Drop lowest for both. Easy A.
Problably the only professor I've ever had who comes in with absolutely no lesson plan. She just stands in front of the entire class and just speaks. She does not really lecture about anything relevant to the material she just talks about current events. Easy A though. Just read the book and you'll do fine. Test material is straight from the book
She doesn't really lecture. She just comes to class and will start talking about controversial topics and current events which is actually kind of fun. There is always room to debate in her class and her tests are right from the book. So read the book for the tests and she even has some open-book tests so always bring your book. She's the best.
Very unorganized, very lazy. Says she will do something but never delivers. Her tests are based entirely on the text, so all you need to do is to read the book which is a good thing because she doesn't lecture - her classes are just her discussing ongoing events which most of the time have nothing to do with the class.
She does not teach material at all. Be prepared to memorize old statistics. Her tests are impossible, they focus on minutiae from a dry & stats-heavy text, ex: "what percentage of Americans had TVs in 2009?" Completely disorganized, sometimes she'll give a scheduled quiz or test, and sometimes she'll let you study & then give you a project instead.
Horrible teacher! Changes the topic of the test at the very last minute. Don't bother following the syllabus because she doesn't. If your'e attracted to Pekinese dogs professor livings is the one for you. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! Assigns quizzes randomly and most of the time the quizzes cover chapters reading that she hasn't even discussed in class.
Don't get where the good comments are coming from, they destroyed my winter session. The lectures were really good! However, during our 6 weeks, we ended up having 2 quizzes (extra credit opportunity) out of 6.. She would change chapters 2 days before the exam and some questions on the exam were from other chapters.
If you value your GPA avoid this class. Its a joke, her lectures don't help with the test you have to just read the book. However her tests are ridiculously hard. I regret taking this class.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. Literally doesn't teach for half the classes - every other week is a video & a quiz on it & a test. The days she DOES "teach", she plays "games" w us or preaches her ideas she wants us to adopt. Always needs to be right. loves kiss-ups. Disrespects ppl with religious, non-feministic, conservative views - be silent, or DON'T TAKE!
BAD! I've had teachers I haven't agreed with, yet still respected. I gave her many chances, yet she has never ceased to DISGUST me! She tries to convince us of her extreme liberalatheistfeminist views "through sociology." Makes CRUDE suggestions and used fowl language that have made me disrespect her as a professor. Very disappointed.
Avoid her class at all costs!!!! Even if you need this course take something else. I just saved your GPA and your dignity
Disorganized and unprofessional. Enrolled in 6 wk online class. The first day of class, online classroom is all old material from a previous course with wrong due dates. Also, prof ordered wrong textbook for bookstore, and yet, there was a quiz we had to take on textbook material by the end of the week! What a mess.
I would try to find another soc professor before taking her. Her lectures have nothing to do with the tests. You have to really just read the book and study it to pass the tests. The class involves a lot of group work. Every other week there is a video quiz and an exam. Video quizzes are super easy though and she usually cancels them.
Take another professor if you are taking online. I am an A student and this was one of the most intensive reading classes I have ever taken. Quizzes and test questions are very difficult and she tests on things that you didn't read in the book or lectures. She is disorganized. Stay away.
She's not a good teacher, but if you show up to class, do the work she assigns in class (to obviously avoid teaching) I think she boosts your grade, which is good, because I wasn't doing well on the tests (I had to teach it all to myself from the book) but wound up with a B. She probably has tenure so doesn't work hard to be a good teacher. Whatevr
Terrible teacher. Took this class online and did completely awful due to how terrible the exams are. Not only do they not make sense, they are worded extremely difficult. Her lectures don't make sense, she does not offer any help. Plus, she won't assign extra credit to help you. Do not take her unless you don't mind failing.
Livings is disorganized and unapologetically liberal. Lectures are all over the place, she does not honor office hrs. Exams are almost entirely on textbook. She drops lowest exam and offers several extra opportunities. Despite her flaws, she is extremely intelligent and encourages critical thinking, I'd retake immediately.
Very unorganized and exams are pretty much out of the text book. She spends almost all class session taking about personal experiences and teaches straight out of the textbook and the textbook supplement online quizzes and PowerPoints.
Her online classes are pretty easy if you read through all the material she provides and do ALL quizzes and exams. If you have any questions and email her, she only gives vague unclear answers.
Her lectures get off track sometimes but I enjoyed her class discussions. Exams are off the textbook, lecture notes, and slides. READ THE TEXTBOOK. It helps a lot. Attendance is tedious but it does help you know what's going on in the class.
the lectures just help you visualize the material, but go to the textbook for exam prep.
Her online class was awful. She is not involved at all and when you email for questions, it takes a day to respond and you get a vague response. Would highly not recommend her.
She rarely lectures about anything that will be on the test. We have to learn everything on our own.
do not take this!! i am an A student and struggled in this class, as you are only graded on two tests and 3 quizzes. the lectures are only her giving an opinion and the book barely helps. highly recommend taking another professor
Took online class. She didn't have class set up the first week. There's no communication unless you initiate. Expect heavy reading. Tests are about practical application. You have various correct answers but you have to pick the BEST answer. This class was the worst I've ever taken. I took this for fun. I have a BA and 3 Masters. Never again.
Livings Soc 4 class was the hardest class I have ever had to take in my academic career. It was disorganized, we had no logical lectures and unfortunately the exams were absolutely practical based so we had to teach ourselves everything. I feel incredible to have walked out of that class with a decent grade because it was just absurd.
Don't expect to learn much in class- though she will answer questions if you ask. She started the semester by not showing up and not letting us know, and seemed to struggle being on time/coming from that point. Its an easy A if you read the textbook, she will drop the lowest exam. Kinda a waste of time but at least grading is forgiving.
This professor's lectures were somewhat unorganized and tests were based off of the readings. I was able to pass only because she dropped the lowest score. But she provides a study guide that were very helpful on tests.
I did not like her and she is not really nice either. She can be kind of sarcastic that some students did not want to raise their hand again. Plus, she NEVER talked out anything regarding the class - she talks about everything else BUT the class, so be ready to read. She is all over the place.
Very easy online, just be sure to read the book.
A very "going through the motions" low effort professor. Just does a handful of papers, busy work in-class material, and a group assignment. Overall disorganized and doesn't do so much. You could save time, money, and learn more if you just binged a handful of Netflix docs and read a couple books on White Privilege. Pointless.
U will not get anything out of this class. She does not talk about the subject matter at all (more about current events). STUDY THE BOOK or you will fail (once again she does not teach it). Trying to reach her after class is nearly impossible and she will constantly reschedule u. Learned more from fellow students than her. She will judge ur answer
Professor Livings is a nice person but not a great professor. Very disorganized and talked about current events most of the time rather than lectures. Barely showed up and still did good. Take her if you just want a GPA boost. If you want to actually learn, take another professor.
This class is good if you know what you're getting into. All of the tests are straight from the book, which you rarely if ever discuss in class. All lectures are just current events. Her study guides are the test verbatim. If you expect that you are going to listen to a lot of rants and do work on your own, this class is a breeze.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, gives you an overload of material you don't need and purposely confuses you on tests, when you think its pretty straight forward and get excited that she drops your lowest test score ( which doesn't make any difference I may add) you think why not? Well don't... just don't ... most irritating class I've taken.
I decided to take this course because of the decent grade distribution. This class is not worth the workload. She says she is all for equality/diversity which means giving a workload that EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE can do. She is unprepared, unorganized, dissociated from class and does not grade papers anywhere near timely.
She's literally the worst. I can't stand her sometimes. She gives us so many assignments and she grades to unclear standards. Her class is super frustrating and she shouldn't be a professor anymore. At least have other options for her classes!
I actually have not learned anything in a 12 week semester. She talks about current events that have nothing to do with the class and personal stories. She never answers emails, flakes on meetings, is late to class everyday, and when she says she will send a study guide , its sent the day before the test. Take a hard pass on this class.
Class wise, get ready to teach yourself the class. The lectures in class arent related to tests at all. And the professor doesnt really let your know where you are in the book/syllabus, and our grade is basically tests. But the teacher is really cool, chill, & sarcastically funny. She makes it interesting but can be pretty boring. Its passable.
Learned nothing during that 12 weeks class. Lectures have nothing to do with the actual tests, 3 tests during the whole semester and pretty much nothing else that we got graded on. She simply does not care. Literally handed me an exam paper with the answers already circled by another student, acknowledged it, then gave it to me anyways
Online course with 0 interaction, just syllabus posted (confusing), read book chapters and take tests w/ questions not in textbook. No papers, no critical thinking work or discussions. Nada. You are on your own. At end of course Prof went AWOL for 5 days, even Dept chair could not reach her. Final was posted late, w wrong date. Really, disastrous!
TRUST ME DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
The class is mainly video and text quizzes and reading. If you do the reading, you'll be fine and get an easy A. The lectures don't really help much with those things but I think it's a pretty easy class otherwise. She's super nice and is easy to contact!
By far my favorite professor on SMC campus. I have taken 3 of her classes, soc. 1, soc 33, and soc 34. EASY CLASS. Her class consists of class discussions, group discussions, and documentary films. She ocasionallly gives HW... not really. THE STUDY GUIDES ARE HER QUIZ. SO IF YOU DO THE STUDY GUIDE YOUR SURE TO GET AN A+ REGARDLESS.
Do not take this class. She's not teaching at all. Get ready to self-study.
Professor Livings is my favorite professor at SMC! She is great and if you just read and attend her zoom lectures, you should do well.
I don't understand why she has bad reviews here. LET ME JUST SAY that I took her for 2020 Fall and she was amazing! She truly cares about her students. She made extensions when we felt overwhelmed and the material is easy to follow. She doesn't take attendance but it is better if you go , you will become more engaged in the material!
Professor Livings is the worst teacher I have had in my entire academic career. The lectures never corresponded with the material we were supposed to be learning. Had to teach myself. Also a hard grader with no rubrics or feedback ever provided. Due dates would randomly change and new assignments not on the syllabus would pop up with no notice.
Professor Livings is hands down the worst professor I've ever had. Be prepared to teach yourself. Her lectures are unorganized and uninspired. She is the personification of all the negative stereotypes attached to tenured professors. If you wish to be taught by an attentive prof. choose someone else.
I really wanted to like this course given that my major is Sociology. No clear direction as far as lectures and expectations of assignments. No rubrics or feedback ever. Thank god attendance is not mandatory because they are a complete waste of time.
Professor Livings is genuinely the worst professor I ever had. Her lectures have nothing to do with the learning. She puts no care into tests, often having repeat questions, questions with blank answers, and correct answers marked incorrect. She is impossible to get a hold of. Grades tough with no rubric or responses. Hasn't graded since 1st week.
She's the worst professor ever . she still hasn't graded any of my assignments since the fall semester started !!! i would definitely not take any of her classes ever again!!!
Professor Livings has yet to complete grading our fall assignments and it is almost the beginning of the winter semester. Most of the assignments are from over three months ago. She isn't on top of grading at all and doesn't prioritize her classes.
Professor Livings is caring and is very clear to what she expect from students. Very flexible with assignments, she most of the time, extends the due dates on them so we can have the opportunity to complete the assignment and to to receive an A in class. I took her this FALL for Soc34 and will be taking her for the Spring, too. Take her.
At first the class was completely unorganized with assignments have due dates from 2-years ago, however the Professor worked this out within the first week. Syllabus is a disaster, have no idea what our class textbook actually is. I believe the Professor is highly passionate about social justice however I understand other peoples frustrations.
After taking 2 classes with Professor Livings, I am glad that I did. The subject matter is very interesting and she is flexible and wants her students to do well. The only downside is that she can sometimes be late or change things last minute. She gives a lot of papers based on videos and they are all on very important topics.
She's a great professor very inspirational. I took her class pre-pandemic. I would always look forward to being in her class. Easy A!!!
Ok syllabus is a disaster- you never know what's due. Classes are random & regularly start/end 3o minutes late -but go if u want an A. Hw is easy- weekly movies that you have to casually review in a few paragraphs. The test q's are verbatim out of the study guides (good luck finding them tho!). Prof is passionate but dismissive & out of touch.
