Ridiculously hard to understand. She lacks the vocabulary to teach this course. Her availability is limited and she simply doesn't care to reason or answer many questions (she simply gives you a vague statement of something she has already said). It's no surprise that only 1/8 of our class ever shows up.
this course was not that great. The material isn't too hard, but its tough to sit in and listen in on lecture. 90% of the class is gone anyways and all she ever does is read off the slide. If you put in effort to read the text and understand the material you will do well, otherwise, slacking and passing is still an option. (not exactly recommended)
Prof is most BORING prof ever. She talks in monotone voice the whole lecture. Material in class very easy, but she makes it very easy to fall behind. Definitely do not recommend.
AVOID THIS CLASS! The only reason anyone passed is because exams are open book, but that is only helpful to a limited extent, since Gaitri deviates in crazy, nonsensical ways from the explanations in the textbook. Such a terrible teacher, extremely unhelpful and unclear. I would never take a class with her again.
I really like her, she's super funny. However, it was hard to understand what she was talking about most of the time. In order to do well in the class you would have to go for extra help elsewhere.
She's not as hard as everyone thinks; however, she may not be as fluent as people thought in speaking English but it wasn't difficult to understand what she said most of the time. If you frequently ask questions upon questions that you find difficult to understand throughout the course, she'll be willing to help you.
AVOID taking a class with her! she doesnt use the same formulas as in the text so when it comes to assignments and exams it ruins your grade because the ta's mark in accordance to the text.. also the exams were extremely hard and nothing like the assignments AT ALL!
Horrible. Doesn't care if students understand the concept or not as long as she is done covering the notes for that particular lecture. Explanations are extremely convoluted and notes are very unorganized. Answers questions very vaguely and doesn't clarify. Tests q's are nothing like study q's in book. Stop hiring people of this calibre SFU.
Surprisingly comprehensible, the course is just difficult. However, you MUST read the material before lecture and be prepared to use the text as a GUIDE, rather than as the only resource. Test q's and book q's are not well co-ordinated/related, but she warns you of this ahead of time (if you attend lectures). A little bit erratic with office hours.
She seemed to be a nice person and she is really into stats, but the course was all over the place. She gives formulas and doesn't say what they are for, it became so confusing that I just said 'screw it' and took notes without really understanding. The assignments are easy if you follow the examples in the book. THE BOOK! It saved my grade.
This Prof doesnt explain ANYTHING and had to rely on lab tutors to explain ALL the material!!! Very short with students and hates answering their questions. Its like taking distance ed basically!!! AVOID this Prof and take this class with someone else who actually puts a half effort into teaching (she is so bad, basically anyone else is a better choice) GPA Killer + major headaches every day = statistics 203 with Dr. Yapas!
If I had the power to fire profs...
For everyone that is complaining. You all want an easy A. Sure she doesn't answer questions clearly sometimes, so you should go to the STAT workshop then. Dont blame her for your bad grades. Overall, she was pretty good, and she clearly outlines what she expected for exams. To do well..go to class, read, and do problems at back of text chapters.
This course is much better than I anticipated. Gaitri is a good prof. The assignments and exams are okay. Just follow the examples in the notes and textbooks and you will do fine. Sure Gaitri might not be very clear sometimes she is friendly and helpful. The TAs in the workshop are also helpful should you need extra help. Study and you can do fine.
The lectures are very confusing and she doesnt stay on topic very well. Questions that students ask hardly ever get a direct answer. Lots of things are half explained or half finished and then she moves on. Most of the class doesnt know whats going on during most of the lecture time.
worst prof ever
awful
really bad
She never knew the answers to her own questions or questions from the textbook but she expects you to know the answer. You're basically teaching yourself in this class.
Avoid at all costs. There was absolutely zero motivation for any theorem or concept which made it next to impossible to learn how to apply it. The course textbook and her teaching style are totally incompatible which makes the textbook a waste of time. She is completely unorganized and lectures are just "group activities" on concepts untaught.
Her class is just so awful. Please avoid. I am going to have to retake this course to actually learn what was supposed to be taught to us.
Do not take her.
Content could be understood with a good teacher but we are quizzed the entire class every class with iclickers before learning anything. Second midterm did not relate to anything we taught ourselves from the book...
Gives poor explanation. She doesnt explain anything in class and just throw some random clicker question. I feel like I teach myself om this course. People are just failing because of her
She teaches in an inverse lecture style so do the chapter reading ahead of time or you'll have no idea what's going on when you come to class. class is more for practice problems. also go to TA hours!!! it made all the difference. the prof is a little disorganized but the kindest person ever, actually enjoyed stats which didn't think was possible.
She is the worst instructor I've ever had. She didn't explain anything and her lecture is so messy. Iclickers questions are terrible and not useful at all.
Worst prof at sfu. If you want to fail and feel like you have a -1 IQ feel free to take her class. Assignments, quizzes and Exams all do not make any sense at all. She is disorganized, doesn't answer emails or questions in class. Iclicker questions are also useless. DO NOT TAKE HER!
if possible 0/5... one of the worst profs i've had. Super disorganized. Skipped required concepts and skimmed lecture slides & TAs mark exams and assignments you dont know what is required (incoherent). Not available outside or in class.. doesn't answer questions and email. Random iClicker questions not related to course.
FOR STAT 270: Make sure to read the textbook before attending the lectures because she expects you to already know the material hence the "random" iclickers. The iclickers is for participation and it really helps you review the material.
Would not recommend Gaitri. Not a single lecture all term, only useless clicker questions. Does not answer questions, never available for help. Exams are nothing like the textbook material. The syllabus was not helpful. unorganized individual. Very rude to students. She has a phd in stats yet says "you guys know better" do we though? DO NOT TAKE!
Nice, and accessible outside of class. She held office hours right after each lecture, and was very active online on Piazza. Her assignments were reasonable, and the exams relatively easy. Her actual lectures were not good. Too many bad iclicker questions, not enough meaningful practice problems and examples taught in class. Overall, not that bad.
She's nice but nice does nothing for you when you're so confused. She never gave a straight answer and often said "i'll turn this back to you guys to discuss". Lectures are a waste of time and you spent the whole time doing group work. She moves quickly and expects you to just read & understand everything on your own. Wouldn't recommend at all!
Had some issues with this prof. Extremely unorganized. Attending class was not helpful what so ever. The lectures and slides were not useful and common sense. My iclicker did not work the entire semester and it didnt change my grade. Approachable but not helpful as she told me to discuss with classmates. Hardly answers emails. Do not recommend.
Nice person but a terrible professor. She herself seems so confused and lost in her lectures lol. people came to class only because of iclicker. If you take it with her, you will have to teach yourself basically. Though you have to go to class due to the iclicker questions, you won't learn anything. She has these annoying group activities too!
No one understands a word she's saying, subtitles would be helpful
Poor lecture!!! Do not take the course of this prof!! The course is easy, but it is useless to attend for class You can learn it by yourself at home
Enjoy paying 800 bucks to teach yourself an entire stat course. Do not recommend taking Guy Three.
I wish she knew how to speak English. As another person wrote here, subtitles would drastically improve this class to a point it would make it somewhat worth showing up to it.
Her class is the most terrible class I have taken in SFU. There is no need to go to class unless you want your icliker participation mark. Her accent always makes me feel confused and her in-class activity is meaningless. The course is not difficult, but her teaching is terrible. Highly not recommend!!!!!!
She puts up the powerpoint slide and lets us read it quietly while she is just walking around the class .
worst professor I had so far. very boring and disorganized. she doesn't care if we understand the material or not and doesn't answer questions. she tells you to look in the slides or in the book or to " think about it". she gives you 2 quizzes, homework and an assignment a week before the midterm and asks why you don't understand the new material?
AVOID. AT. ALL. COSTS. The absolute WORST professor at SFU, I am surprised she is even allowed to teach anymore because she is the most disorganized and unclear individual I have ever encountered, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER unless you want to be confused at every aspect of her online HW which she NEVER explains, extremely inaccessible as well!
i-Cliker made my life better then it ever was. Best name representation you can possibly hear in your life. If you survived 1st midterm be sure, nothing can destroy you.
Worst professor I have ever had. She is passionate about statistics but has no idea how to teach it. Would not have passed without the textbook. Do not recommend to anyone.
EXTREMELY unclear, disorganized, short with students, avoids questions, easily flustered and makes it obvious that she is not there to help students learn. Worksheets and iclickers could be helpful except she never gives answers to anything. I left the mandatory lectures more confused than after reading the chapter myself beforehand. Horrid teacher
By far the WORST experience I have ever had with a class and a professor at SFU. She is disrespectful, does not know what she's talking about, and is unwilling to take questions or criticism from students. Her tests vary wildly in difficulty and she is incredibly disorganized. Do NOT take this class under any circumstances, find something else!
WORST prof ever!!! Never seen a professor like this so disorganized, confused and lost in her own words. I did STAT 100 with her, the course was quite easy but seeing her made me angry. She does not know what she is talking about. Better to study at home than go to her class.
Can u imagine that? I got A in stat203 but Im not sure I can pass this course. This lecturer is sucks and I dont know why she didnt teach anything in lecture. Dont take any courses relate with this lecturer. Even its stat100, its still not a GPA booster
Avoid at all costs. Nothing more needs to be said.
Shes honestly a bad teacher, but the class was very easy and you should be able to walk out with a B. She allows you to bring cheat sheets to the quizzes and the final exam. The material is quite easy and mostly common sense and very minimal math. Only go to her lectures if you want the iClicker marks.
Prof was extremely unhelpful and I basically self-taught myself everything through textbook slides and the textbook. if you can avoid taking stats with this prof I strongly recommend not taking it with her. A lot of the time it felt as if even she didn't know what she was talking about. Worst experience ever.
BAD PROF. Don't listen to her lecture. You can learn more from the textbook than the lecture.
I stopped going to class halfway through, the lectures were unbearable. Very slow and answers too many questions during class. I ended up just reading the textbook and getting an A. iClicker questions during class for credit. She has an accent and she spends a considerable amount of time trying to silence the class.
I found Professor Yapa to be helpful. My knowledge in university level STAT/Math is rudimentary and I took this course to fulfill quantitative requirement. Professor Yapa provided many opportunities in class and through online quizzes and assignments to learn the course content. It was evident that she cared about students success.
Gaitri Yapa is absolutely brutal. All the homework and exam questions are very poor questions and struggle to actually evaluate the concept its more common sense. For example there were questions about how zip codes work when were in Canada. Her lectures are terribly organized and her lecturing skills are painful to witness, totally monotone , slow
I know there are lots of review saying shes bad, but actually her lecture is decent and understandable, she is an amazing person. Ive never met a kinder professor than her, she is always approachable, kind and friendly. She is very caring, really wants to help her students. She also often ask how she could improve her teaching or the lecture.
the worst professor Ive had at SFU. I found stat 203s content to be easy, but her lectures (incredibly disorganized and meaningless) make the course harder and more confusing. Test questions make no sense, they read like they have been sent through google translate 15 times. Just terrible
Gaitri is one of the worst profs I have ever had at SFU. She is disorganized, hard to reach, and seems to have no clue what is going on. Her lectures are a joke, and you will basically be teaching everything to yourself. She refuses to answer questions outside of canvas and if she does answer they are all vague replies. Avoid her at all costs
Avoid this prof at all costs. Straight up? She sucks. Disrespectful to her students, doesnt seem to care how anyone does on their grades, and an absolute narcissist. Go back to the hole you crawled out of :)
Takes the easiest possible path for herself, doesn't care about her students. Extremely inefficient and indecisive.
Although she seems like a nice person, her lectures were extremely dry and were impossible to sit through. In addition to this, she failed to post any updates on canvas or send out emails regarding the changes in grade distribution or additional assignments when we moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After talking to friends who have taken Stats at a different university or with a different teacher, the clear lack of care for students or the ability to teach is super apparent. To pass this class you basically need to teach the entire thing to yourself from the textbook or from UBC or any other lectures on youtube. After COVID-19 it got worse
Makes material more confusing than it should be Assignments long, redundant, time-consuming Grades can never be seen on Canvas ("Calculation of totals has been disabled") Usage of 3 systems (Crowdmark, WeBWork, Canvas) makes viewing everything confusing and disorganized Formatting of Canvas is messy Lectures are boring, iClicker marks
The WORST prof I have ever had. Absolutely avoid at all costs- or buckle up for the worst semester of your life. Gaitri is extremely disorganized and her course content is unclear 99% of the time. Avoid avoid avoid!!!
Worst prof Ive ever had. She was consistently rude and very unapproachable. Her lectures left me feeling more confused and I had to teach myself the class with the textbook. She is also extremely disorganized with her canvas page and consistently forgot to tell us important information regarding grading and format changes due to COVID-19.
Decent prof, lots of hate online. Concepts of the course is VERY straightforward, allows you to have a cheat-sheet during exams. Sure, her lectures are dry, but you can easily learn everything from the textbook, so you don't need to attend lectures. Overall, if you have a half decent foundation in math, honestly, this course is a B+. (CS MAJOR)
Worst prof I have ever had. I tried really hard to like her as she sometimes appears to care about our learning, but you soon realize that she really doesn't. The worst exam I have ever written was with her as it was so disorganized. We were adding, editing, and deleting questions during a 50 min exam. If you can teach yourself you will be okay.
I'm amaze at how SFU would hire a lecturer like this. Her slides were so disorganize and her videos are always cut off. Totally not up to standard
Gaitri Yapa is not helping at all, if you end up choosing her, prepare to read the textbook by yourself. Don't watch her lecture, or you will get as angry as I am now.
Worst prof I've had by FAR. Super disorganized and overall incredibly rude. We stopped asking questions during lectures because she would treat us like idiots if we asked anything. Spent way too much time waiting for us to quiet down even after we stopped talking. A few students dropped the class because of her, I should've done the same!
Honestly she's not even as bad as what some people say. Her classes aren't terrible theres a reason she can be a prof. Yes, she is confusing during lectures but the concepts are pretty straightfoward. As long as you pay attention to the syllabus and quiz/exam schedule you'll be fine. The textbook helps because it provides more in depth information
Hands down the worst prof I have ever had. You can tell she was not meant to teach as her methods of explaining and presenting information are insufferable at best. She doesn't teach you, you teach yourself, if not you fail. Please, if you have any respect for yourself DO NOT take her for any course. I should have just listened to the reviews...
Oh boy. Stats 100 isn't a hard class, however be ready to do EVERYTHING on your own. AWFUL lecturer. EASY CLASS. I'd be scared to take any hard class with her. Doesn't have a great grasp on how technology works. Doesn't answer questions well or respond to emails. She can be fairly reasonable and nice though.
Gaitri is very kind and makes STAT100 an easy course. Helped me with a problem with an assignment early in the semester and was very accessible for that. Not the best lecturer, but she makes up for it (to me) by being approachable and having easy quizzes/exams/assignments.
This seems to be a trend on this page, but truly Dr. Yapa is the worst professor I've ever had. Her lectures are dry/reading from the textbook and often just includes incomplete segments. Tests are incredibly disorganized, constant failures, and yet she does not seem to care at all. Student concerns are ignored or given non-answers.
A bit disorganized. Make sure you are following the announcements section on Canvas to keep up with things. Her lectures are decent, and she seems nice enough. If you have a good math background, than it should not be a very challenging course. If not, than you may need to do more textbook questions and make sure you attend/watch all the lectures.
Asgments, quizzes, and final were not too challenging. Just read the notes, do txtbk examples and watch the lectures, material is not hard. Once we had a problem with a webwork quiz, but she extended the time so it was no big deal. I notice a lot of students already had a bad impression of her, probably due to the reviews. She's really not that bad
The biggest mess of a class in my university career. Very vague lectures so you need to teach yourself with the textbook. She can never be reached and even during office hours there are too many confused students asking questions to ask yours. Our final was 3 websites we needed to switch between which was filled with errors and issues. Please avoid
If you are not willing to teach everything to yourself, do not take a class with this prof. Prof is too lazy and does not do a good job of going in-depth for any of the concepts. The slides are basically just a repeat of the textbook with basic examples but the work uses advanced examples that just end up confusing the student.
I'm taking her course online and it is just terrible. Sometimes it seems like she said to herself "how can I make this course as boring as possible for these kids". I wish I read these other comments about her before I signed up for her class because they are nothing but true and I would have never taken her course.
She is the worst professor I have ever met. She spends a lot of time on cumbersome teaching forms instead of teaching content. Her lecture is terrible. Her explanation of knowledge points is very superficial and vague. However, her homework and exams are even worse. She wrote the questions herself, and the exam questions were often confused.
worst teacher in SFU. many things except study need to do. complicated format of homework. If you just make mistake in format, you will get zero.
Do not listen to the comments about this teacher. This teacher shows you that you have to put in the effort in learning the material yourself. As long as you read the text book and do the practice questions, You will have fun and breeze through this course. She gives over 10 hours of Teacher assistance. Literally no other class does that.
Makes you watch lots of videos to continue in the course. Proceeds not to actually teach anything though. You literally have to teach and learn everything yourself to do well, luckily the material isnt that hard for the most part. If you can take with any other prof Id recommend them over her any day. Her final was a mess too
She failed to upload a huge section of the exam containing all the easier content from chapters 1-6, didn't help me access it and is now weighing my scores on the other 2 thirds of the exam more so which were the more complicated word problems with more chances to lose marks.
All I have to say is, Gaitri just shouldn't be teaching... she doesn't like her students and her students don't like her. She has little to no patience for people who are not good with math, she thinks she is the best prof to exist when sadly.. it is the opposite. She was also rude and embarrassed students. Avoid
Avoid at all costs !!! Her final was awfully created and didnt touch on 90% of the material taught (self taught) cause she doesnt teach anything... also announced she wont have final grades till mid January which is insanely inconvenient for the students who need to submit final grades to departments or sponsors ... overall such an awful prof
Yet another online class that I had to teach to myself. Pretty useless lectures, but Gaitri is the only prof I had this semester that would respond to emails within 3 hours and always asked how school was going for me. She is a very nice lady, but I shouldn't need to pay tuition for nice emails from my professor.
Honestly not the best prof. I didn't mind the class because of my previous history with the material but for anyone who is new to math/statistics, this was definitely brutal. It's all self-taught and very assignment heavy. Two chapters and one assignment minimum per week. Overall, a lot. Aside from being a sweet lady, Gaitri wasn't really helpful.
Before I took a class with her, I read the comments about her and I was really scared!!! But if you do the assignments and read the material that she have assigned, you would be fine in her exams. She might seems serious, but I think that she is a kind person and care about her students a lot.
The worst teacher I have ever met in the years of SFU. Lots of stuff keep you busy, and I believe 4xx courses might have the same level of heaviness as this course do. Her lecture just read powerpoints and sometime even let students read by themselves. Make A LOT OF MISTAKES when grading, you have to come to her office hour becuase she will never e
stat100 is more difficult than Nima 300 level. Paya teaches like excrement, but the problem is extremely hard!!!!
Gaitri uses embedded questions in her lecture videos that don't work half of the time when you submit them, but continues to use this method despite many students having issues with it for the entire semester and many complaints. Tells students to complete assignments over 24h ahead of the due date to "prevent this issue". Lectures are dry + boring
I am so confused by half these reviews I just recently had Dr. Yapa for stats and she was one of the kindest profs I have seen at SFU. Her lectures were short and we rarely had them throughout the week. Yes some of her lectures had issues but she was always willing to help fix those issues with students.
Im not sure how she is a professor. Never made sense what was going on during class.
