Leonhardy is one of the all time best teachers ever. He was teaching from China but he was still giving outrageously cool comments the whole time. He is brutally honest and grades hard but I didn't care because i learned what i needed to do to be a better writer. he is not big on telling you nice things. his book about teaching is interesting.
I took his class Spring 2014. He made us learn about class issues, race and gender. I wrote more than 80 pages of journals and several papers. He met us on Sundays at Rozz Tox to talk about our homework. I really like his book that he wrote. I heard he spent the summer with headhunters in Asia. That would be typical of him. Good class
Mr. G is a great prof. U work but you learn. He is a rare find at BHC
I'm in his 101 class right now, and he is amazing. Everyone's right, the class is really tough but it's doable. Having a hard prof. that inspires you is way better than a boring one that gives out easy A's. Galen is extremely helpful, he is really active on his facebook page if you need a question answered. I'd recommend him.
Take any class he teaches.
This is a once in a lifetime class. I have had family problems so I missed a bunch of classes. G worked with me until caught up all the way. just dont think he is going to be mr. nicy nicy. He is fair and helpful though.
Mr. Leonhardy let me write in both Spanish and English. He helps students feel included.
Mr. Leonhardy could be a really great actor or comedian. like you see this actor on stage, laugh and learn about writing. he be super serious at that same time talking about how words and ideas are used to keep "power powerful." WE look at some writing n he just breaks it down i think he wants to be like the old skole sopists he talks up.
A once in a lifetime teacher he is really great and i have never had a teacher be so helpful or kind to me i'll never forget him walking through school carrying a students child and talking like barney the dinosaur that made me laugh you have to do all assignments or u dont pass he is tough i think because he was a marine but hes cool.
Galen is the master of grammar. He always takes the time to clarify. Galen has this grammer sheet he gives to all of his students. This worksheet will be your bible. Use it. Know it. Love it. Galens courses prepared me for all future college courses. Galen is very accommodating.
We learned a Nez Perce song. He talked about the art of headhunters in the Phillipines. He climbed in the rice terraces with them and he showed me a necklace that was made of human bones and smelled like smoke from the men's hut where it was made. He helped me figure out how to make my life worth living.
He is a tough grader because he wants you to succeed. It's a lot of work, get over it. He's a serious educator, unlike his colleagues that give CC's a bad rep for being too easy. His lectures are all about issues in society regarding race, class, and gender. Be mature enough to understand what he's talking about, and apply it to your own writing.
Galen Leonhardy is one of the most intense teachers I have ever met. It's like your watching something beautiful and then your realize you have been watching your own transformation and you didn't even know it.
I just started the class. He had everybody laughing he is totally understanding
I like it when he reads his wok in class. Plenty of in class time to wok on projects
Dance lessons we a good experience. Good for boosting the gpa. interesting too
Professor Leonhardy is, by far, the most halarious teacher I've met. You get plenty of time in class to do work. The lectures are interesting and funny.
This class perfect. His book is interesting. You write arguments on any topic you want, but Leonhardy gives you topics too. We read Marx, Frerie, Foucault, and a lot on racism. In class writing time. Low stress. Great course.
Mr. Leonhardy was the best. I dropped this class with another professor because it was too hard for me. Mr. Leonhardy starts from the very beginning with proper grammar and punctuation, then works his way up to how to write an essay. He was so patient with me, he's very understanding and easy to talk to.
G won't tell you this, but I will. He volunteers about 6 hours per week with elementary school kids in Rock Island to teach basic literacy. He also works with homeless people. I am glad he is my teacher.
my friend and i took his online summer class. We both just turned in the assignments and got high grades. My friend revised one paper to raise her grade and i revised three. U won't have a hard time getting high grades because he tells you what to do when you revise.
The online class is straight forward we had an intern from Western who gave us comments before the due date. Leonhardy told us about the Cordillera Mountains and the descendants of the headhunters he was living with.
Allows all students to excel by providing opportunities for students to earn an A. You have to do the work, but he helps you revise up to the A. Students get to write about anything they want to write about: he let me write about a topic that interested me, even though the assignment had to be revised (for all) to allow me that opportunity.
I took the online class last summer. He was teaching us and he wrote all about being in the Cordillera Mountains in the Phillipines where he was learning about Igorot people and their art. He was always there with helpful answers to my questions, and his writing was fun to read. The class is not too difficult.
He taught us how to sing a traditional Niimiipuu (Nez Perce Indian) song. It was great because the school is named after a Native American chief, but there are no American Indian teachers (except whites who claim to be Indian) or Native American history or literature classes. In fact, the school got rid of our annual powwow.
His comment really helped me see what I did well and what I needed to work on. He makes the class fun. I feel like his posts to the class really shows he cares about all of us.
Go figure--a teacher at Black Hawk who is actually published. And you can tell because his comments are a real writer's comments. My uncle publishes books, and he read Leonhardy's comments and said the comments are really knowledgeable. I read some of the prof's writing online. He writes well. His comments are the comments of an author.
Because of his teaching i feel better about myself.
U gotta admire a teacher who provides great comments that help u grow as a writer... while he is drumming at a pow wow on a reservation in Idaho. This guy really helped me. One time, he was writing from the top of a mountain in the Gospel Hump wilderness. He just cares. u can tell in his comments.
gave the best comments on my work of any teacher anywhere. He is the best online teacher I've had at BHC. You can tell he cares.
He taught us a Native-American song. Somebody banged on the walls of the classroom while we were singing (one of the other professors!). We were all totally shocked and embarrassed. I will never forget what Leonhardy said. "Don't be mad. That person has allowed you to understand what Indian people have to experience on a daily basis."
He introduced me to Malcolm x in class yesterday. I have watched those videos over and over again. Can't stop watching Malcolm X and Cornell West and bell hooks. Thanks Mr. g!
I believe in myself now. I have never had comments like these. He actually reads what I write and cares.
Thanks to Dr. Leonhardy i listened to Malcolm X Cornell weat and Henry Giroux. Now i know what a public intellectual is. Not easy but rewarding
Learned about Cosme Diez Maestrado, and now I get why people write and what's at stake. Leonhardy makes writing fun and challenging. I have read a few of Leonhardy's essays online. His writing is interesting. Read "Calling All Hero: Tragedy on the Riverfront" in Newcity. Then you can find out what he is made of.
I am a vet and A high school English teacher. When I went to BHC, I did not know about Leonhardy's article and book publications. His Transformations:Working with Vets in the Composition Classroom is used all over the world now. And yes, his "Callng All Heroes: Tragedy on the Riverfront" and College Quarterly articles are classics for sophistry.
I love the class. The ballet lessons were fun. Understanding interpretation is easy. And his lectures are rewarding. He is a public intellectual. I can't wait to do the opera lessons.
You have 2 take this class He is the best professor EVER! You can tell he cares. His teaching is clear. You learn alot about writing.
The one thing I can say about Mr. Leonhardy is he helped me learn about myself. From my spiritual beliefs to my politics, he let me write about myself and my ideas. He helped me learn how ideology is socially constructed. He introduced me to Bakhtin and the idea of having a necessary principle. And he helped me learn how to learn.
I see him at the Martin Luther King Center in Rock island. He helps kids like my son read and do math. I think he walks the walk.
Great teacher, he really knows how to get across to everyone in the class with the writing. If you put in the work you will grow as a writer in every aspect.
Le Nozze de Figaro and Rigolleto--comedy and tragedy, Bahtin's Art and Answerability--making art applicable to life and to constructing a healthy social reality, Berry's Sex, Economy, Freedom and Community and Hardison's "An Essay on the Essay"--complicating our understanding of what an essay is and how we are constructed--Great class.
G makes me feel like I can make the world a better place.
Everybody I know passed the stupid exit examination. Leonhardy helped me learn to see the flow of structure in my writing. He is a wonderful person and a great teacher.
We read Celebrating Columbus Day from the Ecologist. I can't believe a school named after a Native American leader promotes Columbus Day. How typical! Thanks to G I know about that now!
His in class writing and reading and editing help--tons better than is tending to a nutcase lecture. I just got published in the Dispatch thanks to this class.
What Galen does helps us to see what we believe personally and learn how to explain our reasoning. He then offers us the chance to renew our sense of hope and our beliefs that we can in fact work on the world by using our skills for a greater good. His book, The Alternative, really let me believe it is possible achieve community.
Great professor with a fun personality. Homework is the biggest part of his class, but he makes it very clear what is expected of you and helps you get it done.
The nicest teacher you will ever meet and he helps us get published
Leonhardy helps people. He helps us in class. He helps my children at the MLK center of RI. He helped get two of my classmates published this semester. He helped me learn about Cornell West and Malcolm X. He helped me understand that my being multilingual is a positive thing.
You want to understand how to use language to challenge domination? You want to learn how to use punctuation? Take Leonhardy's class. We just read Eric Fromm's "The Authoritarian Personality." And my friend in 091 just read The Declaration of Human Rights. I believe in democracy now. And I can write about things that work against authoritarian
The best! He got us through the stupid exit examination (BS). Everybody passed. The course textbook is interesting. We read National Public Radio articles every week. This teacher made learning fun for me.
Thanks to Mr. Leonhardy, I love to write. I write poetry. I write essays. I write in Spanish and English, and I mesh the languages--something he encourages in his classes: And I still write daily journal entries.
Leonhardy is amazing. Take the class.
We learned to sing a traditional Nez Perce song. While we sang, another professor pounded on the classroom walls. Leonhardy said, "Do not let yourselves feel anger or embarrassment because that person taught you what Indian people experience on a daily basis." I heard he practices Shaolin Kung fu. His lectures are amazing and inspired me to work
Take his technical writing course! I heard it's being offered in the spring semester as an independent study! Leonhardy edits for rocket scientists at the Harbin Instute of Technology in China. He is a published author and edits a professional journal. He helped me get published and get a job by teaching resume writing! Great professor!
Professor Leonhardy taught us to understand verbs and adjectives yesterday. He used Kungfu moves, dancing, and singing to help us learn the terms! Now, that's teaching.
In class, we laughed until it hurt, but we also learned about racism and how languages (and people) are oppressed. The comments were comments that made me feel like working to make my writing more effective. And his book is actually an interesting read: I finished all of his journal entries and was really happy with the ending.
Great teacher, takes time to talk to each student about their needs. Helps improve your writing skills. He's really funny, likes to joke with students and makes you feel comfortable in his class. I wish he taught more classes
I have never laughed so much or learned so much in any class at BHC. If you want to learn how to write from a person whose work was published in Truthout and many other places, take his class--a real writer teaching writers how to be writers.
His online English 101 is a great class.
Very easy, but helpful.
You do daily journals, diagraming, sentence combining, weekly objective summaries of National Public Radio articles and opinions (summary and response to reading), four paragraphs, a collection of all work and revision, a reflective essay, a narrative essay, a paraphrase of the Declaration of Human Rights, a summary and response essay and reading
83 one-page journals, 80 pages read from The Alternative, assessment criteria, basic structure terms, 35 sentence diagrams, 160 sentence combining problems, 14 NPR articles and objective summaries, 14 response paragraphs, 4 times writing paragraphs and revisions, paraphrase human rights declaration, 3 1000-word essays, lots of learning
Funny, class may seem confusing in the beginning but stick it out, it all comes together fluidly in the end.
At first he will come off a little strange, but he's very helpful and will ask you if you're personally having any troubles with the class. For an 091 class he does assign a lot of work, honestly more work than I've ever had for a class. But I have grown for a writer, but be prepared for the work load.
My favorite prof EVER! We laugh and learn. He dances and sings. He uses his own publications and provides great examples that helped me understand what my writing can look like.
Writing is fun now. I wrote 83 pages of journal entries at about 200 words per page. And I had fun writing every page.
This what most impressed me about Mr. G: he is a published writer teaching us how to write. Students in his classes get published. This semester he was accidentally (as he puts it) published 4 times. He has a Truthout article and a few others. He has little "tricks" that helped me learn how to write like it matters to me.
Make sure you look up and can define "hypocrisy" because that is what the content of his classes has you look at. Folks say they are testing to ensure standards, but really they are testing to enforce power. What makes Prof Leonhardy's classes fun is that you get to learn about hyprocrisy. And you can change the assignments if you work with him
I had Leonhardy as a teacher about 16 years ago when he was at Gonzaga. He helped me learn the value of critical intellectual engagement. I've never forgotten him.
Wow! I just signed up for his online course and just started. He writes great responses to our introductions. The class does not look too hard, and the content looks interesting.
Because of this class, I like writing. I found out that writing is fun. I have to work at it, but writing is fun now because I understand what essay writing is and how I can use it.
Leonhardy help me understand that my being multilingual helps me be more versatile than people who only have one language. That made me feel proud of myself!
Just finished the 101 online class, and it was a great class. I cannot believe how caring he was. He bent over backwards to help me understand what I needed to do. Leonhardy is the kind of teacher I will remember for the rest of my life.
Leonhard classes are enjoyable. About three years ago, I took his 091, 101, and 102 English classes. I've since become a technical writer for the military. My interest in becoming a writer really started in Leonhardy's class when we did the Valentine's Day paragraph, and I read my letter of admiration to my future wife.
He was a very great professor. Many times we were writing papers on the most interesting topics and also engaging in some detailed discussion boards. He really gets you thinking outside the box. He expects a lot but really gives you the tools to be a great student if you take it!
I enjoyed Leonhardy's humanities class. We sang a Nez Perce Indian song. Somebody banged on the classroom walls when we were singing (funny). We studied essay writing--Montaigne to Wendell Berry. We had a great midterm concert at Rozz Tox with a folk singer. We had ballet lessons. We wrote a lot and read a lot. And I learned a lot.
I had to drop the class because my scheduling just makes me too busy. He was really polite to me. I thought that fact says a lot about what kind of teacher he. Because he was so polite, I decided to stick with the class, and I made it through.
Best office ever! His office tells you what he is like: tea set from China, traditional Nez Perce bags, opera or Bach or some foreign music playing, pictures, paintings, pottery, - headhunter necklace from the Igorot people who live in the Philippine mountains, and books--lots of books. He is a wonderful teacher.
I LOVED Leonhardy's teaching he was real, honest, and open. As long as you read the from the Alternative, and write your essay's and do revisions you will get an A. If you are having a hard time like something is going on at home so you maybe an assignment wasn't up to par he is very understandable. I would DEFINITELY recommend him!
He was a great teacher. He grades by completion so if you do your stuff you'll get an A. He does give a lot of homework so its fairly easy just very time consuming. He teaches differently so throughout the year I felt like I wasn't learning but by the end you do really become a better writer. Don't fall behind on your work and you'll do fine.
Leonhardy's lectures have stuck with me. There were times when the insight and kindness were so overwhelming. He helped me understand how testing can be used to oppress groups of people and how it's really hard to stand up to people who are sadistic. I like how he does not grade on product but instead focuses on process. I think writing is fun.
His humanities class remains one of the most memorable and wonderfully engaging learning experiences of my educational experience. I'll never forget connecting Wendell Berry to Titanic to Bakhtin to labor history to Marx to feminist theory... as a first-year student. All of the sudden, I realized that power is real and that I could resist it.
Most insightful teacher I have ever known. I still live in the same city and run into him once in awhile. He really cracked the doors open for me in the world of academia. I was a really ( Insert negative adjective) writer, but not so much now.
His online English 101 is a great class. He commented on every draft. The workload is doable. It's a great summer class to take.
The class is based on completion of assignments. The writing assignments are all submitted as drafts. He comments on the drafts, and then you revise. You keep a daily journal that you use for the last assignment. We wrote about things that mattered to us personally. Leonhardy helped me get published. That was fun.
This was my favorite class EVER at Black Hawk. Leonhardy really made the class more like experiencing an ongoing work of art--simply one of the best learning experiences I've ever had.
If you are the kind of student who takes an online class and expects your professor to answer a question at 11:30 at night, Leonhardy is the teacher for you. He is always available and has answered ever question I had for him. He is super polite and caring.
I took three of Leonhardy's classes: 091, 101, and Humanities 101. I found that he provided tons of comments. For the 091 and the 101 we did almost all the work in class. I had a lot of work in every class he taught, but I learned about writing and thinking because of all that work. He's humorous, too. I use what he taught me at the U of Iowa.
Leonhardy did a great job. Recommend any class he teaches
Such an amazing professor! He got the chance to get to know each and every one of his students' he grades off of your effort. If you've done it or not! He's an overall amazing tecaher! I will be taking him again if I get the chance to.
I have never read or written so much in my whole life! But it was worth it: Leonhardy read and commented on every assignment. He also required revision of just about every assignment. He is easy to work with and will help you get through the class, but you have to do all the work. Great learning environment!
We did a collection, which required us to do a lot of revision. We completed sentence combining assignments and we did some grammar. Those assignments helped us talk about the revision we did in our writing. That helped me really understand what the tutors and the teacher were telling me. We wrote daily journals. Great class!
He was the best professor I have ever had. He was incredibly accommodating to many circumstances, and always provided wonderful, constructive feedback. I wish he taught all the classes I have to take, his teaching style is remarkable.
He is super chill as long as you show up. If you turn decent work in on time you will get an A. He gave us in class time to go to the tutors so they could help us with our papers.
I had Leonhardy for both 091 and 101. He made it so I could write about things that interested me and things that were familiar to me. So we wrote about personal experiences. Then we started reading and connecting the reading to our personal experiences. Then we learned about argumentation and research writing. I wrote a lot and learned a lot.
The nicest teacher and the funniest! He has us cracking up while we are learning about rhetoric and our writing processes. I am really enjoying the class.
This guy is fantastic. At first I thought he was a nut, but as the semester went on I really learned to enjoy him. He's a very knowledgeable man and very understanding. He's very willing to help at all costs. Laid back, and adjusts the homework to fit the students needs. I would recommend him over and over again! Galen is AWESOME!
Mr. Leonhardy is VERY knowledgeable. You do the assignment you get full points. The textbook is his journals and they are about 30 pages a journal, but interesting. Every time I needed help he replied to my emails very quickly! I popped up at his office unexpectedly, and he answered all my questions! VERY helpful and a great teacher.
If you put effort into his class, he makes you a better person by making you think. You'll see the world and yourself through different eyes because he makes you ask "why" you and other people think, act, respond the way they do. He expects a lot of you, but you're better for it. He also, makes you a better writer by showing you different styles.
Leonhardy has you do a lot of work, but he grades on completion of the process. You have to revise after he assesses your work. You read a lot. Plus you have daily journal entries. It's a great class. I learned a lot because I had to revise.
He is a wonderful teacher who let me submit late assignments. And he gave me really great comments on rough drafts. Then I revised. he allowed us to write on whatever topic we wanted.
Take his humanities course. We learned a traditional Nez Perce song, and he lets us do the assignments in class, which helped me get through the class. I work 35-40 per week, so it helped to have the extra time. We did dance lessons and had a midterm concert at Theo's Java Club. It is a great class.
Humanities was an easy class with Leonhardy. It is all based of participation. If you submit an assignment you will get credit on said assignment. Just don't be lazy and you'll be fine. Plus there is a ballet lesson involved
I had a great time with this class (and his English 101). The dance lessons were interesting. So was the midterm concert. You have to do all the assignments, but, if you do that, you will get the A. The assignments were interesting because he uses a lot of modern music and other art.
Professor Leonhardy is an easy grader and a nice guy. I found some of his assignments pointless and sometimes were very time consuming, but the class covers some interesting topics. I don't recommend this class if you don't have a lot of free time to work on coursework.
This was the best class I have ever had. Leonhardy allowed us to use class time to complete assignments. He accepted me for what I can do and helped me be a better writer. We took ballet lessons at Quad Cities Ballet and had a music concert at Theo's. We did read and write a lot, but what else would you expect in a college class?
Mr. Leonhardy read every paper I wrote in his class and then commented on the papers. We revised all the papers. It was nice to know my teacher worked hard and wanted to help me grow.
Leonhardy is the best online teacher I have ever had at any of the schools I have attended. I never had to wait more than a couple of hours for a response. He assessed and returned my papers to me the same day. None of my high school teacher ever had us write as much or revise, but once you get used to it, you see how it helps you learn.
Leonhardy was not upset when I submitted late assignments. Because he listened to me, I was able to take care of my sick child and finish the class. There was a lot of work, but he was really nice.
Mr. Leonhardy is the nicest teacher I've ever had. He was also the most thorough. He grades on completion of assignments and was really nice about that. His comments are really helpful. He told me what I needed to do to write academic essays and he helped me think about the material covered in the humanities class.
Best. online. prof. ever. Nuf said
You do need to spend some time with the class, especially at the start. The dance lessons and midterm are fun and got us out into the local arts scene. Leonhardy grades on completion. You have to do every assignment, but you have to totally mess up for him to tell you that you have to revise. It's not an easy A, but you will get an A.
Leonhardy helped me get through the class. I had missed a bunch of classes. He was like, no problem, we can make this work.
This professor has given me the best feedback I've ever gotten. He really just wants to make you a better writer. Sometimes he says things that might offend you a little bit, but you just got to suck it up and learn from it. He genuinely cares about his students, but he will not baby you.
Professor Leonhardy was always happy to help me and was good about answering any questions. I took his class online and I had never received higher then a B+ before taking this English class. He read every single draft I wrote and gave me notes so I was able to write a better paper everytime.
I am taking his online class, and he has commented on every piece of writing we have. Then we revise it and show it to tutors or other people before submitting the final draft. We have daily journals too. It seems like a lot of work at first, but I am not having any problems at this point. And my writing is really improving.
If you do the bare minimum, you will pass. All you have to do is turn in your paper on time and follow the prompt.
Leonhardy makes us complete every assignment. We have peer reviews and sometimes tutor visits. The course is actually really interesting. The martial arts and yoga classes were my favorite.
It's a lot of individual tasks and you have to finish them all, but none of them are particularly difficult. You can work ahead if you're feeling ambitious, I finished the class three weeks early. I didn't like that the on campus class is exactly the same as online, but you are required to come to what is basically a study hall.
Leonhardy was super understanding about my personal issues and he worked with me the make sure I finished the class. It was actually a lot of work. We revised ever paper with him and with tutors. And you are not allowed to miss even one assignment. Your MLA has to be perfect. And he rejects papers that are not clearly written. Great class!
You have to read and write a lot. We read about 90 pages from his book/journals about teaching and learning. Its all single spaced, so it was like reading about 180 pages. We had to summarize that. Then you have to read all the instructions (another 40 pages). And we wrote over 100 pages. Still, this was the best class ever! Loved the prof!
You have to do every single assignment to pass the class, even the small ones. That being said, as long as you give it your best go, you will get an A. This was my second class I took with Galen and I liked both of them a lot. He really cares about his students and wants his students to enjoy and grow with their writing. Absolutely take his class.
I didnt take his class too long over a nasty message ive received back from him when I asked a simple yes or no question about an assignment on canvas. I ended up switching my english professors because to me that was very unprofessional of him. Ive heard good things about him, but that experience made me lose interest on taking him again.
I've taken both Leonhardy's 101 and 102 classes, and both were a lot of work. But I also really enjoyed both classes. He really helped me learn about college writing and argument.
His English 101 online class was really a great class.
He was wonderfully helpful and encouraging, which made it possible for me to complete the class. I learned a lot about college reading and writing that I have used again and again, especially his revision techniques. I have a real writing network now01. His punctuation pattern sheet is the best. Everything is in the calendar. Take the class!
Leonhardy helped me feel like I could do anything. Prior to his class, my teachers were bullies. Leonhardy helped me get published in the Argus/Dispatch. He is super nice and polite but he can be blunt.
Mr. G has the best grading system. You have to do every assignment and meet his basic expectations. When you dont get it right, he puts a 0 in your grade. So if you mess up, you can just revise. He tells you what to do. Once you do it correctly, you get the A. I had five 0s and revised them. Ended up with an A.
I have nothing but respect for him. I had late assignments. He let me get them done. I had questions at 1:00 am. He answered them. I had questions at 4:30 am. He answered them. I never had to wait to get answers. He always used please and thank you in his messages.. the class is a lot of work, but he worked to help me succeed.
Leonhardy helped me get published in the local paper and in one other place. I think you can say that he teachers what works and what will help you become a real writer.
I have Leonhardy for Communications 100 right now. It's a good class. He sets it up so the assignments are due on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, just like if we were in the classroom. He answers all of my questions right away. When I messed up an assignment, he let me revise it.
Leonhardy worked with me, even though I was being a real snot. I was failing the class. He notified me. I blamed him and everything else, but it was me. Leonhardy was professional. He just told me what I needed to do and allowed me to catch up. I am grateful that he did not treat me like I treated him. Highly recommend this teacher!
There is a two week assignment schedule, so we had an essay due every two weeks. He had us read an article every week that helped us get started on our essay. He can give really good comments on your drafts, so pay attention to what he tells you. He does require that you complete every assignment, but the grading is clear. I liked the class.
You just have to do all of the assignments, and you will get a good grade.
This class was wonderful. We had really interesting reading assignments. We summarized and discussed the readings. We had peer reviews and tutors, so we had plenty of feedback on our papers. We could write on the assigned topic or pick something else. And Leonhardy really helped me grow as a writer. He has a really positive attitude.
I can honestly say he changed my life. He said one of the nicest things I've ever heard about an essay of mine. He taught me to critically think- about everything- from relationships to purchases to politics. Requires a lot of writing, but makes it fun, & takes late work. We learned ballet, listened to music, created art, & so much more. Take him.
There I was, 2:00 in the morning, trying to figure out how to get an assignment submitted. It had been a horrible day. I posted a note to professor Leonhardy, thinking I could go to sleep and read his response after I go up. Nope! He sent a response back within two minutes. He really goes above and beyond to be there for his students.
You know, it's like you have a lot of work but get to spend the whole class doing assignments. We had to revise every paper using Leonhardy's comments (which were usually detailed) and show our drafts to tutors. We had to write long papers. But if you do the work you get the A. He's a nice person too. It is a fun class.
The most available teacher e.v.e.r. There was never a time when he did not respond right away. I never had to wait. And he was extremely nice and approachable. We had to show our work to tutors. Then Leonhardy looked at our drafts and commented. Then we revised. Then we worked with tutors again. Then we submitted the paper. We had to revise a lot.
Very full of himself. Had to write essays on a book he wrote about himself. Very frustrating class. He consistently talked down to students.
The Canvas stuff is easy to read and well organized. You go to class and work on the assignments. The teacher helps you when you need help. All in all a great class and a great teacher.
Great class! The teacher lets you do work in class. I finished a week early. There is a lot of writing and reading, but it is interesting most of the time. I would say take the class.
Leonhardy gave us time every day to work on assignments. He gives a ton of comments. I got behind, so Leonhardy let me catch up without dropping my grade. You have to do all the assignments and the journals. There is a lot of reading. The instructions are clear. If you get the chance to take one of his classes, you should.
Leonhardy taught my 101 class, and then I took him for 102. He keeps the lectures shot and let us do work in class. His comments are thoughtful.
Hardy Leon helped me alot. I immigrated not long back. Hardy takes time and helped me.
I like the 102 class. We wrote 8 arguments and one really long summary. We learned about Rhetoric and Composition theory and argument. The teacher was funny and caring.
I wrote over 100 pages in the class but it did not feel like I was doing all that work The journals were really relaxing because we wrote about whatever we wanted. We had to revise every assignment but i learned alot. There was peer reviews. We had tutors edit our essays, and Leonhardy commented on every assignment. It's harder than highschool.
Took Comm 100 fall 2021 and we did most all of the work in class. Can't complain about that. I had to work a lot that semester. The teacher helped me by taking my late assignments. The punctuation pattern sheet was really helpful. Still using that
Highly recommend. Anytime I needed anything, the teacher was right there.
The readings were great. We revised for the grade. He responded right away every time. Great course
We just finished the eight-week class, and I earned an A! The punctuation patter sheet really helped me understand the structure inside the sentences. Now, I feel like punctuation is understandable. We wrote a lot, too. I think I had more than 110 pages by the time we finished; however, that seemed like it was not difficult. See, I can punctuate!
I took 8 wk 101 and then 8 wk 102. The 102 we did daily journals. We had 4 research argument. We had introduct to rhetoric and composition theory and wrote 2 long informative summaries. There was total 6 pages reading every day. Nice teacher
All i can say is the he was up at midnight answering my questions.
Depression really slowed me down after the midterm. I just was not motivated to finish assignments. Leonhardy keep telling me I could do it. He was really supportive.
We finished the class with a really long summary. The rest of the class was reading, summarizing, discussion, and then argumentative research. The reading was interesting, but you could pick your own topics for the papers if you wanted to. I wrote about video games. All in all, it's a good class.
The punctuation pattern sheet helped me with my sentences. The course is a good one.
Prof. Leonhardy is awesome! He's super interesting and truly cares about his students. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes.
i just did not have the energy this semester--total covid burnout, depression, anxiety. this teacher helped.
A term I was introduced to--translanguaging, which I do every day as a multilingual person. A sentence the professor wrote that matters to me, " Multilinguality is a sign of great learning." A Composition and Rhetoric theorist I learned about in our textbook, Ira Shore. The number of pages I wrote, between 70 and 80 (counting one-page journals).
We had a lot of class time devoted to just getting the homework done. I had to spend another 5 to 7 hours per week. So it took 10 to 14 hours per week in an 8 week class to get the work done. The reading and writing assignments are interesting. We picked our own writing topics if we wanted to. You get the work done, and you get the A.
I had a hard time understanding how to use Word and wrote Leonhardy. He sent me back a video showing me how to do it. It was a great video.
He works with you in every possible way. But he will not allow even one assignment to go unsubmitted. I feel like he genuinely cares about student success and so his syllabus sounds tough but it really is not.
Took both the 101 and 102 ENG classes with Leonhardy. The videos helped get me started, and I finally understand punctuation patterns. The readings in both classes are interesting. The introduction to rhetoric and composition theory using the textbook and research helped me feel like I understand the field of English. We wrote and read a lot.
Online classes make it hard to build a connection with the prof. Leonhardy made lots a great connections with me. He was up late at night to help me with every assignment. He gave us a Google number that we could call at any "decent" hour. I talked to him while doing assignments. He was patient and helpful. You have to do every assignment.
Mr. Leonhardy does a great job. He was up late, online, and willing to help me with assignments. His grading seems hard because you have to turn in every assignment. It's not. we revised with other students and tutors. The teacher put a lot of comments on every assignment before the final. You get an A when you are done.
It was 1 in the a.m. an i was having problems understanding. This teacher was up n said he was reading anyway so just call him. Got it done. Got it turned in. The punctuation sheet and video have helped also. At least you are working with somebody who cares.
This lecturer is quite friendly. He truly supports the students and is aware of their circumstances. Especially for picking up a second language. I like him a lot. His classes in English 101 and 102 I took. I received both As. I've never met a nicer lecturer than this one.
The class was not a cakewalk. I had to read a bit and write a bit and revise with tutors. The teacher is great. He just wants you to make it. He was online all the time, and he has a Google number in case you need to know something right away. He always had something positive to say. If you want a teacher who cares about students, take this class.
The teacher tells me the things I need to take care of. I just had to revise, and then my grade would change. I had missing work. he just told me to get it done. I finished all those assignments and changed what he said I needed to change. i learned alot.
Every single time the teacher wrote me, he used please and thank you. Really polite guy.
I took the class two years at the start of the pandemic. imo, Leonhardy cared and was available.
I recommend taking a class with Leonhardy. I learned a lot this semester. It was not too difficult. Leonhardy let us write in class, so I got a lot of the work done. Plus, he was there to help when I had questions.
You have to take a class with Leonhardy. Best teacher at BHC. You will love the class. Mostly the class is easy because you do almost all the work in class. He cares.
What I can say about Mr. G is that he never gave up on me. There were plenty of reasons to give me an F, but he just kept on encouraging me.
I never understood what assessment and revision really were until this class. Mr. G has comments that help you see your writing. The PPS really helps with punctuation.
Mr. Leonhardy was the most caring teacher. We did almost all our work in class.
I have taken online and in-person classes from him and let me say if it's an online class you'll be fine; however, in person he was rude to me and blatantly disrespected and embarrassed me for checking my phone for one second when I was done with my work. There is opportunity for extra credit which is nice and the class is easy.
I really enjoyed professor Leonhardy's classes. I have experienced his online and in person classes. He is super friendly and amazingly polite, the absolute best teacher I have ever had. He always returned my work within a day. I highly recommend taking his classes.
He saved me from failing the class. I was having mental health issues, and Leonhardy just let me catch up.
Leonhardy provided clear assignment instructions, and he was generous with his time. One thing that mattered most to me was that Leonhardy helped me get published in the local newspaper. The comments he provided really did improve the quality of my arguments. .
G is the best teacher I have ever experienced. He wrote letters of recommendation for me.
Good teachers care about their students: Mr. obviously cares. We wrote a research argument every two weeks, so I had to stay focused. He has journals in 101 but not in this 102 class. I missed having the daily journal.
Leonhardy was more than kind to me. He went above and beyond to help me get through the class. Highly recommend!
In this class, the teacher required everybody to do every assignment. Once you finish all the assignments, you get the A. You revise all the papers. We also wrote daily journals. I never revised in high school. Plus, we read a lot.
His 102 class was wonderful. The readings were interesting. The discussion questions helped me draft the unit research argument. The teacher gave detailed comments for revision. Then we worked with tutors. Then we revised for a second time. Then we submitted the argumentative research paper. If we had errors, he commented and we revised. Then A+
Mr. L started off the class today by helping all of us understand how we could pick our own topics and, maybe, change the world with our ideas, even if what we changed was just in our own workplace. He helped us understand how we could make a necessary principle and use that to help us make decisions about our actions.
This guy was up commenting on my writing and replying to my Canvas messages at 1:00 in the morning. Devoted? I think so.
You can tell he really wants his students to succeed. Doing the work in class really helps.
I was able to write about the things I wanted to write about. Leonhardy gave me plenty of things to revise.
Highly recommend
At 8:45 pm on a Sunday night, this prof was answering my questions about Canas and assignments.
In our class, we learned quite about about argument, rhetorical tools, reading, and revision. We had a lot of revision. The teacher provided comments. We were required to work with tutors. We had peer reviews. We did a lot of revision.
The best part of the course for me was that I was allowed to writing on any topic that I wanted to write about (no conspiracy theories). I think his letting me write about what I was interested in helped be improve a lot faster than I would have otherwise.
I have Leonhardy as a teacher at Scott Community College. He has been super helpful, and his lessons are clearly written. I wish he taught more classes on this side of the river.
The best.
He's a great online teacher, and I am sure his in class is good too! You have a fair amount work to do, but I really learned alot from him.
I enjoyed the readings we had in 101 and 102. I took both classes with Leonhardy. You do the work. You earn the A. He is a friendly teacher.
Will give you full credit but will tear you apart in the comments. be prepared to purchase HIS OWN BOOK that HE WROTE. You will practically put your money into his pockets.
I am learning a lot in this class. Highly recommend.
In my experience, this teacher was up at midnight answering my questions. The course was well put together. I took online and in-person with him, and I personally found his teaching to be exemplary.
He has good humor. cares to
Mr. L seemed to really want my success.
We did 1 paper every two weeks. There is a summary assignment. Leonhardy reads and comments on all the work, which helps with the revision. The readings are interesting.
Basically, Leonhardy just talks to you like you are a human who is trying in the class to learn about writing. I found that if I did the work, I got the A. He helped me to feel good about my writing.
Every comment he wrote to me started with "please". I had a grandfather die, Leonhardy, encouraged me to get caught up. He even wrote a letter of recommendation that helped me get MONEY! for school. He is the nicest most caring teacher I have ever had.
His 102 is a really good class to take.
Leonhardy is the best teacher.
Mr. G has bent over backwards to help me. I called his Google number at all times of the day and even late at night. I have learning disabilities and he was there to answer my questions no matter what time it was. I was agitated sometimes but G just talked me through the problem. Gotta admire that.
Everything is set up in Canvas so you know what you have to do. The instructions are a bit long because he explains things in more than one way. We read and wrote every day. It's what you would think a college class would be like.
Leonhardy cares about students. He's a nice old guy.
It was a work, but I finished the class early. Like he said if we finish early we can focus on our other classes. That is what i did and i got good grades in those classes too.
I recommend taking Leonhardy's class. You earn an A by completing all the assignments. It's not that hard.
I learned a lot in this class. The teacher bent over backwards to help me. I enjoyed the reading assignments.
The English 102 class is not that hard. You just read an article, do a discussion and write a paper every two weeks. There are two longer papers where you get an introduction to rhetoric and composition and English teaching. It;s a college class.
The teacher is good to us and helps revision and personal attention.
I felt like he really cared about us. He gave us every day in class to work and only had short lectures when it was important. I did all the assignments and got an A. He helped me with my writing quite a bit.
Mr. Leonhardy provided a quality online learning experience for me and my brother. We both learned a lot from the class. As homeschooled students, having Leonhardy for a teacher helped us adjust to college.
I learned that I like writing in this class.
The class is what you would think a college class would be. I had to do work. I had to follow instructions. He tells you what you need to revise. And then you finish the class with an A plus.
When I was behind on my assignments he helped me get caught up. He also let us use most of the class time for reading and writing.
Pretty easy-going guy, gives good feedback. Just complete all of the assignments (half decently) and you're guaranteed an A+. My only complaint is that his book is a necessary textbook, but is really only used for like two assignments. If you have a friend that has had his class before, just ask if they still have theirs. You can't return it.
He let us use classroom time to read and write. He put a lot of comments on my papers. It's a good class.
The teacher was helpful. He was online and willing to help me figure out how to get my assignment submitted at one in the morning. It was late. I really enjoyed the textbook. It's a good workbook. Leonhardy really does go above and beyond for his students.
The class started off with quite a bit of work but that did not last long. We just had to read instructions and learn how the class works. We had four assignments for the course workbook. we did a lot of reading and writing but it was not that difficult. The teacher really cared and was there for us. You can tell he cares.
Leonhardy let me turn in late assignments when I had a death in my family. He was really nice about it. His instructions are clear. We did a lot of revision. His response time was fast, and he was available.
Essays are easy and engaging to do as you pick your topic for each essay Fast response time to questions, or concerns. Also gives feedback quickly. Essays are a con as well. Well, you have so many to do along with tutor reviews and peer reviews. Discussion Boards- Way too political The Alternative- Write about a book that he wrote about himself
Loved this class! Really admired Galen who was up at 1:00 am helping me figure it out! Enjoyed learning about English teaching from the book. Take the class
This was an easy class for me. I learned a lot.
I noticed that Leonhardy went above and beyond to help students. The class is easy. You just have to format the papers correctly and write what you can. He helped me know what I needed to do.
G is a caring and knowledgeable teacher who has written some interesting articles. His classes gave me an introduction to English education and helped me with writing and reading. With Leonhardy's assistance, I published an op-ed and then went to Northern. I completed the English Studies for Secondary Licensure in English Language Arts.
loved this class!
The things he told me about my writing were true. The class is easy.
You can get the A if you correctly format all your work, follow the instructions, work with a tutor, and submit the work on time. He provides timely feedback, stays up late to help students who are up late doing the work, and lets us do a lot of the homework in class. He is down to earth and wants us to succeed.
Because he cares so much, I think he's the best teacher I ever had. He wrote letters of recommendation for me. He lets you write about whatever you want to write about. His PPS and grammar video make make punctuation understandable. He spoke to me like I was an adult. He made me laugh. I have no problem giving my highest recommendation.
Anybody can do this class. The teacher is really nice.
I found Leonhardys class to be the easiest class I have taken so far.
Prof leonhardy is really helpful.
This teacher seemed to really care about me and my writing. I would say to take his classes if you can get into one.
You will love this class. He lets you do a lot of the reading and writing in class. He is there for you if you need assistance. It's easy.
He is the kind of teacher who writes you a note telling you that you are a hard worker and ask if there is anything he can do to assist you.
Galen is an engaged and caring professor. The workload is manageable, with helpful feedback on assignments. Unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook are great study tools. Definitely recommend this class.
This guy is up at 1:35 in the morning helping me get my paper submitted. I think he cares.
Highly recommended
Insane workload for the base level type of class he teaches.
I think Leonhardy has a great class with thoughtful lessons.
Everybody gets an A. You do the work. You get the A.
I have five kids. Leonhardy really worked with me. I took his 101 and 102.
Leonhardy is really helpful. He talked me through a few issues with Outlook and Word.
He is just a really cool teacher.
This teacher's class took about 2 hours for every hour. We wrote about what I wanted to write about. the teacher helped me and other students in the classroom.
(OOPs) When I started Mr. Galen's class, I had five kids. Life was not easy for my husband and me. But we both took the class. That was in 2017. Now, I am working for a law firm, and I have never forgotten how much he encouraged me and my husband. He was extremely helpful. You will learn a lot by taking any of his English classes.
When my grandma passed away, Mr. G helped me get caught up with all the late assignments.
What I experienced is a quality teacher who worked hard to help me understand and revise. Good class and a quality prof.
This is an easy class. You do alot of the work in the classroom.
It was about 10:00 p.m. on a Friday night, and Leonhardy was online helping me figure out how to get my line spacing set correctly.
It's a good class. You get to write about whatever you want to write about.
For me Leonhardy was the kind of teacher i always wanted to have
Basically, we did the same things every two weeks. I enjoyed learning about English education by reading The Alternative. Thanks to that book, I will finish my degree in secondary rather than elementary education. Leonhardy said I should think about law if I get burnt out on education.
Don't work on other people's work when you are in his class. Leonhardy lets us work on things he assigns, but you can't treat the class like a study hall. That is the only thing I can think of that other people might want to keep in mind. He is a quality teacher. He is there for you if you need him. Highest recommendations
I was having problems writing the summary. Leon sat down with me and helped me rewrite the summary.
I managed to get an A in this course because his style is ok. His comments however could often be condescending when I asked a simple question, and his instructions were often rambling or unclear. All his learning bases and prompts were political, and he made us purchase his own book which we barely used and couldn't be returned.
taking the class now and learning from it.
Leonhardy's class made me feel good about going to the Dirty Bird. I did not know it when I took the class. When I looked his name up online, I found out he published a lot. My perception now is that Leonhardy was a writer teaching writing.
Great class!
This teacher totally helped me understand rhetoric, sentence structure, and how to write arguments. He doesn't mess with you. He just suggests. Learning about English education by reading The Alternative helped me decide to go into secondary education rather than stick with elementary education. One of the best classes I took at BHC.
Leonhardy embodies what teachers should strive for so that our educational system can evolve into something that can adapt old world knowledge with the new world way of life.
I was in Leonhardy's Humanities class in 2004. Solo Greene flew in from the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho. We learned Nez Perce Humanities. We sang two Nez Perce songs, The Warmup Song and The Chiefs' Song. We preformed at coffee houses, in churches, and in the lobby at Black Hawk College. It did not stop there. We did a lot of reading and writing
We spent every day writing in class. Leonhardy goes around and asks every student what they are working on. He explains whatever it is I have questions about. I am getting an A. It is hard work. Still, I am learning a lot. I recommend the class.
Writing my daily journals was the best part for me. I just felt so mindful while writing. When we did the summaries for The Alternative, Leonhardy had us look at teachers first. Then we looked at ourselves as students. That kind of self-reflection really made the class enjoyable for me.
This guy! Love! Love! Love! His class.
Highly recommended and teacher quality
He got the work back to me on the day I submitted it or the next day. His comments helped me see my writing differently and I revised. Working with tutors also really helped me. Leonhardy made exceptions for me when my grandma died. All in all, I think you can't go wrong with this class.
The summer eight week 102 is a good class. The focus is argument. The reading writing takes some time. Leonhardy bent over backwards to help me and my wife get through the class.
The best class at BHC.
When I took Leonhardy's class, I finished in 14 weeks. There were people who were done with the class in 8 weeks. The girl I knew who did that just worked really hard. Some people take 16 weeks. You can kind of go at your own pace or follow the schedule. He was there when I had questions. Basically it is a good class.
Mr G fo sho got my vote for the Punctuation Patterns Sheet alone. His video is a good one too.
My experience in the English 102 class was that we spent every day reading and writing and revising. The thing I found different was how we learned about English education and rhetoric and composition theory for one unit. Since I am an elementary education major, I thought it was really interesting. The rest of the class we wrote arguments.
Mr. leon nicer teacher America.
The thing with Mr. G is that he's going to do his best to help. Like me, I asked a lot of questions. Mr. G just answered them and asked if I have more. In todays world that is uncommon.
For my experience, this teacher really sets everything in order for the students. I just went threw the class one assignments at a time.
This prof is good choice. He got the rough drafts back the next day. You read. You write. You can finish the class early if you do all the work. The peer reviews and tutors really help.
This teacher was up at midnight when I was turning in my assignments. He was there to help me and other students. He is like that in class. Leonhardy is the kind of teacher a college teacher should be.
For me, this class gets the best rating. He's a cool prof who makes learning happen.
The professor gave great feedback. He was very understanding if something came up as long as you communicated with him. As long as you turn in the assignments and follow the rubric you will get a good grade. Used the textbook a couple of times throughout the semester. Prepare to do page long daily journals every day.
Absolutely enjoyed this class!
Leonhardy worked with me when I was having mental problems and family issues. He never gave up on me and encouraged me over and over again to not give up.
Completely argumentative writing. Has the opportunity to work at your own pace. You really don't learn in the class it's more of just you write about topics and he half of the time comments like a sentence or two. Grammerly and Chat is your best tool in this class because depending on the day that will depend if you have to revise.
Leonhardy is the best teacher I have had at BHC. I took both his 101 and 102. He helped me stay in his class, even though I had a full-time job and tons of personal (mental) issues. We did quite a bit of reading and writing in both classes, but you get the A if you do the work.
This teacher returned my papers within two days every time. Leonhardy let us use class time to get our work done. He worked with everybody individually.
I've always been a student who wasn't very good at English in high school, but I really did enjoy his class. He does care about his students and makes that very clear. He is very understandable. I'd take his class again!
Best prof at BHC!
This was the easiest college class I have had so far. The teacher is nice and let us do most of the work in the classroom.
This guy Leonhardy is best teacher at BHC. Took this class and got an A+++++++!!
Mr. G was friendly. He used all the class time for doing reading and writing homework. He was fair. I think this is a class everybody did well in. I will never forget what I learned.
Highly highly highly recommend taking this class! It's easy and the teacher is really nice.
G's 102 is really easy. You learn helpful information. You don't really have to show up to class as long as you get your work turned in on time. Just about every one of us got an A.
This is an easy 102.
I think Professor Leonhardy has hands down been one of my favorite. He is very passionate about his subject, cares about his students and their needs, is very helpful, and overall a great guy. I reccomend taking his classes I would take them again if I was given the chance.
