Good presenc but his knowledge is a little spotty
Excellent at relating material to class...very interesting to listen to.
Excellent at getting the information accross. Very interesting to listen to. A hottie.
Knows his stuff and is very intersting. Awesome teacher!
Really interesting class. Pretty sarcastic, loves to roll his eyes, but hilarious and has a good relationship with the class. Easily one of the best courses at Ottawa U., if you want to understand the modern U.S.
his witty comments are great! sense of humour lightens up the lecture mood. i reccommend this course to anyone, only if he's the prof. hope they keep him around for future years!

Excellent teacher ... lots of interesting stories and tangents ... doesn't put *anything* on overheads, so you'd best pay attention during the lectures.
he'd be great once he gets off his powertrip
Great prof, fascinating lectures. He conveys a lot of information in a humorous, revealing sort of way. Good notes are a must during the lectures, tho.
Absolutely hilarious and informative at the same time. Certifiable genius? Maybe.
He does know his stuff... Talks a little fast. Great class...
AWESOME! take any class by this man!!!! Amazing prof!
good prof, Midterms difficult but everything else is great..
Great, great prof. Great lecturer. Class is interesting and not difficult. Midterms are easy-essay paper is open topic- and final questions are handed out in class.
By far one of the best professors I've had!! Professor Perras is awesome!
Galen is a wonderful man. Very well spoken, an throws in his own personal opinion on issues. Some may not like this, but I do.
I've had him twice now and the rumors are true. Once you go Perras, you'll never go back. Wait, that doesn't make sense. A true trend-setter, much like Beckham...but better.
very good prof. possbily smartest man alive. tries too hard to cover up his preferences by teaching about war, but gay hippie peace earring is clear giveaway. knows a lot about alaska. very scrambly.
great, great prof. i mean, the class is three hours long and i am able to sit and listen in rapt attention practically every time (unless i am dead tired). midterms are easy. you choose your term paper topic, which allow for greater flexibility. i love history and i love this class!
great prof, despite the fact that he's a total socialist. very funny and very knowledgable. a little frustrated with midterm marking as he seemed to take issue with writing style, rather than content. knows how to teach.
This is an amazing class taught by a fantastic prof. If you like sarcasm and wit inserted in lectures on topics that can be sometimes tedious, you have to take a class with this guy. Really knows his stuff and has a good rapport with students. I would take any class taught by this guy.
tough marker!!! long lectures!
A real a-hole for the final exam. Screwed us over big!! tough marker on essays. lectures were long and generally boring. midterms were easy (to make up for everything else) seems too stupid to realize this is a first-year course not a masters-level one.
Awesome prof. really knew his stuff and didn't mind to throw his own views into teaching. Really a good class.
I've had him twice and know his life story, but i'm ok with that. He's a fantastic prof, i would take any course taught by him. Knows his stuff but makes class interesting by inserting his own point of view and other tidbits. He's a fair marker and makes you want to do well in his class.
I really liked this class. His lectures are interesting and he knows so much about everything! I would take any of his classes!
Definately a fan of this guy. I found his lectures to be very clear, concise, and entertaining. I also found that most of his lectures cover the readings, which significantly reduces course load. One downside, however, is that it is hard to keep up with him while taking notes. He goes a little fast.
This is the best class I've had yet. I actually feel as if I'm getting my money's worth. He's the smartest man alive, and teaches the students as if he actually respects our intelligence. His class is only easy if you take good notes, though. Love the sarcasm, too. He's very witty.
This prof was awesome.. he was kind, dedicated and made it clear that he cared about education. The only 3 hour lecture I truly wanted to sit through. Such a great, cool man... huge ani difranco fan and hip socialist (and a great history prof)
Galen makes going to class fun. Some of you may remeber the bell curve of the Lewinsky comments, or the "blunt the size of my forearm"! Seriously, he KNOWS his material, he doesn't need notes to teach it, its like he lived it. He lays out his expectations the first day and expects you to follow them
very into details which makes it hard, very hard marker (wants you to know too maby specific details), very opionated
Galen rocks because a)he lets us call him "Galen", b)he has a good sense of humour, c)he knows his stuff and makes it interesting d)the midterm and final exam are not hard if you pretty much came to class and took notes. He can apparently be a hard marker on the essays, but i got the TA. GREAT prof.
Quite possibly the best professor I've had. His lecture style was almost like story telling, which makes it much more easy to digest then your average History prof. Very witty and funny, and would insert a snarky comment now and then, but it was always aprropriate. Overall, excellent prof.
what an amazing prof!!! so clear and knows his stuff (rarely used notes). Any questions you pose, he'll answer. Very helpful with essay questions! Witty and smart... love the nerdy jokes he throws in! best history prof ive ever had!!!!
what a prof.. knows his material without use of notes.. very thourough.. easy to approach and deal with, and he is also a very fair minded person.. courses are great and interesting, well thought out and planned effiecently.. he is overall one of the best history professors at the univeristy of ottawa
Great, amazing wonderful prof! Lectures are amazing, i felt like clapping at the end of each class! mid terms are really easy but essays are a little more difficult.
Wow. This profs could be a professional lecturer. His class is interesting, extremely thorough, and well structured. You feel like you have to make every class because there's so much covered. Somehow, he makes you take the class extremely seriously. He's a relief compared to many other profs U of O hires. Amazing Prof!
Great teacher, great class, knows what he's talking about but could only use one book for final essay..that sucked and it was a boring book. Other than that, he is a great teacher.
Awesome prof. the best by far...I was sad when I missed class cause he makes it so interesting to learn. If you get a chance take one of his classes!
Refreshingly good at lecturing; delivers material in a very organized, captivating manner. Sometimes it's hard to keep up but you will never be bored. He includes funny and random anecdotes about historical people & events, allowing for a nice change in pace. Easy midterms if you study; the essay isn't hard if you do it right. Ended up with an A+.
Every history student should take at least one class with Perras. Great lecturer, funny, sarcastic, honest.. Awesome course. (Canada/US Relations)
What can I say about Galen? I LOVE LOVE LOVE this man! He's incredibly intelligent and witty. His lecture-style is captivating and his sarcasm is much appreciated. Easy midterms, open essay topic, and take-home final. I finished with an A+. Take any course you can with Galen, he's fabulous! Not to mention the fact that he's a very sexy man.
super awesome prof
This prof. may be my favourite so far at U Ottawa. He is extremely clear in his lecutres and very funny. He is also extremely approachable, and is a very interesting man. His lectures go by extremely fast. Make sure you know important people, places and events for his midterms. Overall: Make sure you take a class with this man, he is amazing!
Great prof, really enjoy the style and very funny. In depth coverage of content gives you good knowledge of subjects covered. Midterms are simple but specific. Fast pace lecturer and lots of writing but the class flies by because it is very interesting.
He is a great prof... really good lecturer...but he doesn't take $h!t from anyone
Great prof, knows what hes talking about, class is well-organized LEARN HOW TO TAKE NOTES and go to class, midterms are based on the lectures
He's an amazing prof... he's too good to be teaching first years. Be prepared to madly take notes in class, but other than that, the class is pretty easy and you'll learn a lot. If you appreciate sarcasm, take his course.
AMAZING PROF. If you have the chance to take any class with him, do so. However, be prepared to take many notes, attend most classes and the workload can be a challenge if you make it one. Very articulate and interesting. Don't speak during his lectures, students will throw things at you lol.
galen is the man!!!! his lectures were always interesting and clear, but very fast paced. midterms were very easy. final exam was given out about weeks before the exam. i was not very interested in this period of history but he was succesful in sparking my interest in every lecture!
I went from almost failing this class to due to some serious personal matters to getitng either an A or A-. This professor, as other's have stated, doesn't take**** from anyone, but has a heart of gold. He's is extremely intelligent, passionate about the subjects and has great stories to tell at the Oak after class.
Lectures are very fast paced. I recommend having a laptop if you can type faster than you can write with your hand because it will help judging by the speed of the lecture. Midterms/exams are fair. Extremely good speaker. I would recommend taking classes that he teaches.
Very good
Lectures are always interesting although he's hard to take notes with becuase it's so conversational.
Great prof! Very helpful!
Great prof. Tells you everything you need to do well in his class. Lectures can be scattered at times but are overall really interesting. Prepare to write/type fast in his class!
Very entertaining prof. Interesting lectures but he goes very fast. Study hard for the mid-terms, they're not easy. Stick to the lectures. Really cool guy.
Interesting Lecturer, seems to want to help with problems on papers but doesn't really provide constructive feedback. Never looks you in the eye when talking with you which I found very insulting and disconcerting. Unfortunate because he is a GREAT teacher, just seems a little bit pompous.
Great professor took 3 classes with him. He is always available to clarify information in at his office. Very enthusiastic about material and encourages learning rather than regurgitation. He made my degree worthwhile! Thanks Galen.
Fantastic prof. "I will bleed on your essays", in reference to how many comments he wrote on our essays in red pen. Very helpful.
Knowledgeable to an extreme.
Amazing professor. Very clear expectations, and engaging lectures. Speaks quickly, so make sure to bring a laptop. I got an A on the term paper which I scrambled at the last minute to complete. All that's required is a strong thesis. Minimal marks were deducted for the numerous punctuation and grammar mistakes I committed. I'm also a fan of his wit
Absolutely excellent prof - sad that the class is over. Incredibly knowledgeable, fantastic lecturer, really really interesting man, good feedback on assignments, etc. If you have the opportunity, take his classes and do well. :)
This man is what a university professor should be. He cuts through the BS. You are all adults now, he will treat you as such. Loved his style and his wit. Clear on what he wanted and how you should go about it. Come ready to write notes, and don't expect the "crutch" of slides, despite what you may think, you don't need them
He's a really brilliant Prof, not too demanding either. Very personable and funny.
he's awesome. Got to his class and you will learn a lot. Watch for mistakes on papers he's a hard marker and will fill your page with red ink.
Excellent professor, conveys the material in a very effective way . Course is designed so that you actually engage in the subject matter without being too focused on in-class texts. He will bleed on your term paper.
Prof. Perras has a more interesting lecture style, but it gets the job done and conveys the information well. Be prepared for some challenges
Amazing Prof. Definitely one of the best I have ever had. Incredibly knowledgeable and a fair marker. I would take all of his courses if possible.
Amazing lecturer. Tough marker on the term paper as he expects a lot of little things to be done properly. If you want a good mark, you do gave to work a little bit extra in this class.
He's super funny and the best History lecturer I've had so far. He's a hard marker on the term paper and the midterms aren't how I was used to being graded in History classes. Doesn't post anything online so attendance is a must. Loved this class, and will definitely be taking his seminars later on
Really interesting professor. The class-average was pretty low (C+). There was two big projects and two small quiz's (40,40,10,10). It's hard to have more then a B on the projects and you have to study to do well on the quiz's. Really funny guy and loved it when he gave his opinion. Did my projects in French so not sure how he is on grammar.
He's a bit terrifying at first, but he's extremely fair and clear with his expectations. Feedback on the paper was extremely helpful, and lectures are generally fun. Keep in mind, ANYTHING is fair game for quizzes so study EVERYTHING, and he talks fast, so be prepared. If you can survive him, you can survive anything.
Very funny, opinionated and interesting lecturer but speaks very fast, so pay attention. Doesn't post much online, so go to class. Hard marker but he really cares about improvement, so he'll leave lots of feedback on your work. The class wasn't easy, but it was really satisfying and I learned a lot.
Very okay prof, would not recommend
I absolutely love this man. He is such an engaging speaker and gives incredible lectures. Plus, he is so funny! Hands down one of my favorite profs at uottawa. To be fair though, he does not shy away from giving his political beliefs, which may put some people off. Also, he speaks pretty quickly so be ready for that.
DO NOT skip his class. If you do, you'll do very poorly; readings are supplementary, but not mandatory - his class IS mandatory. If you show up and listen, his tests are incredibly easy. Other than that, all you have to do is buckle down for the term paper. He makes history fun!
Professor Perras' class was phenomenal! His lectures are intense. I recorded them and used the recordings to iron out my notes. Term paper 40%, Take-home Final 40% & 2 quizzes (10% each) that were 25 fill in the blanks. He's very honest about what to study. No trick questions and he grades honestly on the paper/final. Got A+ on both of them.
his lectures are interesting and easy to follow but he is not only a very hard marker, his comments are unnecessarily rude and unhelpful his two midterms are fill in the blank from the slides but he doesn't post them. there are over 380 terms to memorize per midterm. good luck.
Hard marker, very rude and even if you email him to clarify things he's unhelpful. He prefers endnotes instead of footnotes so beware. If you have him online, the course load is unnecessarily heavy. Just overall avoid this prof, the course can be great but not with this professor.
3 papers: 110% paper proposal (2-3 pages), 2 50% term paper (12 pages), 340% final exam (10 pages). Hard grader, gives good feedback, can be harsh cause he is very honest. Term paper can be anything within the timeline. His lectures are interesting. Was understanding with me and my exceptional circumstances and gave an extension for the papers.
Professor Perras *always* requires a fifteen page term paper - he is incredibly clear about his expectations, reachable via email, and generally endeavors to make it as easy as possible to achieve a high grade. I found his lectures engaging and he's an enthusiastic teacher. If you're a good writer, it's an excellent course.
Tough grader, but if you like American History, can't find a better prof. Lectures are content heavy but not impossibly dense.Paper's a beast but not as bad as you think. Some advice: Choose a topic you like. He's not the type of prof to pidgeonhole you, and even if you don't like history, theres always something. Music, sports, dance can all fit!
Tough grader that strengthens the difficulty of his essay through arbitrary and extra rules that, so far, haven't applied to any other class I've taken. Essays and exams are incredibly lengthy and he expects you to know everything to an absolute minute detail. Lectures were enjoyable but don't counterbalance his difficulty enough
Perras required in person hand-in of both the paper proposal and the term paper which was unnecessarily difficult and wasteful. Lectures were fast but relatively boring. Next to no content was available online, no lecture recordings and spare lecture slides if they were even provided at all. He was accommodating and kind for medical emergencies.
Used endnotes which is a killer. Good lecturers focuses on writing style more then the content. Good prof to talk to but is an absolute FDR fanatic expects a high degree of detail no matter how irrelevant it is to your paper topic. Exams are also long essays 5 pages per question. Half your mark is the paper itself so no room for failure in the clas
A hobby prof who smothers classes w cliche mainstream takes on American politics.Definitely not a historian par excellence like Vidal.Argue against use of atomic bombs as I did, he dismisses it as strange. His teaching is not terrible but unprofessional:he is a gossipy left-wing chatterbox who overestimates his recycled repertoire of knowledge
Prof. Perras is great. He gets back to your emails quickly and is very helpful, he knows everything about his subjects so if you need help with anything he can point you in the right direction. He is also very helpful during his zoom office hours. He returns assignments VERY QUICKLY but also gives good feed back. Good lectures, clear instructions.
Engaging lecturer with strong political views. Mandatory attendance, but tests are easy if you listen in class. unstuck AI was super helpful for prepping the term paper.
Quite heartless towards students who require accommodations. Also, do not try linking American policy towards Korea in 1945 with American occupation of Japan/justification for using nukes in 1945, or this "MA in war studies" who "specializes in World War II in the Pacific" will make you question why you're studying history in the first place.
