Dr. Culbert is sweet and super fun. He is so brilliant, and he really cares about us. You can always count on Dr. Culbert.
Wow, that's a tough class. He gives you a test every week, but it makes you do the reading. He really cares, and really knows what he's talking about. Plus he helps open your eyes to politics a lot.
Didn't think a class on methods would be any good. Even though it was hard, it was actually interesting. Prof. really knows what he's talking about and makes it interesting. Much better than expected.
If you are taking more than two additional courses I do not recommend that you take him, he makes you read tons! and there is a test in every class. If you can devote the time and effort then he is a fair teacher. Tough class
His method is simple: Lots of reading, a detailed quiz every class on the reading, then nothing but banter for the rest of the class session. He seems quite averse to actually teaching you things, preferring rather to hear what you have to say. Don't be fooled, he grades very easy. DONT BS ANSWERS!
Wow. Didn't think I was going to like a class on politics. Turns out it's pretty interesting. At least Prof. Culbert made it seem that way.
Professor Culbert taught me how to write. I've never had such an invested and helpful teacher before. I'm really glad I took his class.
You will make the best decision of your academic life by taking your 371 with Professor Culbert. He literally thought us how to write. He has a magic formula that works with any kind of paper and with any subject. If you are struggling with writing good papers then take him!
I'm in his 150 course right now and am enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. For politics he makes it really interesting, especially where the book doesn't. He assigns a lot of work, but his lectures are great and I feel like I'm learning a lot. Take this class with Professor Culbert!
This professor is wonderful. He actually challenges his students. The class is about problem solving and critical thinking and that's exactly what he expects us to do. People don't like him because he doesn't hold your hand but I loved it. If you're interested in a real college class, take him.
The person below is either one of the many students that retook the class or Professor Culbert himself. Culbert knows his stuff, but lacks patience, criticizes students and doesn't properly teach the material. This class is a combination of statistics, programing and theory.
He is easygoing but the class is challenging. There are weekly readings and study guides. He will tell you what will be on the quizzes. No midterm, but there is a tricky final paper, don't procrastinate. The lectures are interesting but can get confusing. Try to participate
He's very entertaining and very smart. I've learned a lot about politics, which I never knew much about before. I actually enjoy coming to lecture.
This class is tough! You cannot slack off at all! A lot of reading every week. Midterms and Final are hard. Made the subject on politics interesting but you have to put effort so if you are looking for a class that is easy for an A, do not take him...
Best professor I have had by far.Very helpful and cares about his students.
He is extremely helpful and really cares that his students learn, but you have to put in a little work, not an easy A, though I got one. He's one of my favorites; I hope to take him for 371 and special topics.
This class is definitely a challenge. He assigns a lot of homework, a letter to Congress, and a final paper. Make sure you READ! There are two midterms and a cumulative final. Midterms and final are multiple choice. Culbert is an easy going guy, but the class is a CHALLENGE! Good luck!
Extremely useful and relevant class, and Professor Culbert makes sure that it will be. Read the book, a majority of his tests cover the readings. He makes learning fun and helps students to realize how important it is to know about our government. It is hard work but not impossible to do well. He is a fair grader and will help you if you struggle.
He seems to really care....especially about ideas, and therefore so will you!
Best instructor in the major. Really wants us to learn and have something to talk about when we're done. Not just memorization, but actual thinking about politics.
Instead of teaching he was playing around with homework questions/answers during the lecture. Horrible grading system, didn't learn anything. He tries to train students like monkeys instead of teaching. Don't take him, unless you have to take stats class he is teaching.
He's a pretty good professor. He wants you to actually learn the material not just memorize it. Makes class interesting. As long as you keep up with the readings, do the homework (easy) and ask questions when you don't understand something, you'll do just fine. He really made this subject fun and interesting.
He's a great professor. He wants you to actually learn the material not just memorize it. Makes class interesting and fun.
In a nutshell he wants you to be ready for cocktail parties to be able and talk politics. Midterms and Final are based off of the book and other sources so GET THE BOOK. Lectures are interesting, however he may get fast paced and confusing sometimes. Seems like he cares, makes me want to take another POLS class of some kind....
Cool teacher. A lot of material to cover, but he tries to explain it all clearly. 2 midterms and a final. There are also 2 short written assignments, which are easy.
Really hard class, but the professor makes it entertaining. Did not like the midterm, but still really liked the class.
Professor Culbert was just awful as well as the course. He doesn't prepare you for the midterms or finals, but expects you to know every single thing he has taught you and learn everything you have read from the book. The only goo thing about this class is his lectures, they are pretty interesting. Overall bad professor. STAY AWAY!
The class was tough but if you show up every class, take great notes, read the chapters, and do the online assignments, you will pass. The online assignments take a lot of time, so consider that before taking this professor.
Gar Culbert is probably one of the worst professors that I've ever had. He's rude to students and his sarcasm is irritating when you're actually trying to learn. His exams are really difficult. I would not recommend that you take this class.
He is particularly rude. Although he does know the material and lectures can be very informative his attitude can at time overshadow his knowledge . Would not re take.
Can't believe he made this class interesting and fun. Thought I would hate it. Probably would have were it not for his energy. Really tough material. But learned more than I thought I would.
Great class. Only complaint is that I didn't learn this stuff sooner. I would have been better off for it.
Great lectures. Great attitude. Wants us to learn and enjoy politics.
Tough but fair.
Do not take notes from his ppt, listen carefully to his lecture and take notes.
Pols150 is incredibly easy if you took and did well in AP Government in high school. For his class, you really don't even need to show up. Like 3 major tests, 50 questions for 2 midterms and 100 on the final, all multiple choice. Culbert is bearable and even funny for the first week or two but I got tired of him very quickly, but an easy A.
Great class. Very entertaining lecturer.
He is cool, some of the stuff he says to some students is pretty messed up.. This quarter his moodle and syllabus were very confusing. One said this and the other one said something different. He has written assignments, online quizzes for the chapters that are out of the highest score, 2 "graded reviews", a paper and a final. Study online quizzes
Basically study his study quizzes online and you'll be fine. You don't really have to go to class. You don't need the book. Just study his quizzes online and attend classes and take notes! pretty easy class
If you do the work this is an easy class. Good lectures. Tries to make it fun. Not as funny as he'd like to be. Is trying though. Lots of good information. Clearly knows the material. Liked it more than I thought I would.
His attitude makes you not want to go to class. Right off the bat he said that half of the class wouldn't pass the class. The reading is intense but do-able if you have the will power. Homework is super easy, doesn't give tests but final paper is tough. He's cocky, thinks he's the best professor at csula and he's not.
This class was interesting and he's funny. Attendance isn't mandatory and all you really need to do to pass is do the quizzes, answers on quizlet, and read the book. There are 2 midterms and a final. For the final, he let everyone retake it if they felt they didn't do well. He also reopened the quizzes on moodle to let everyone get the best score.
Tough class. Tough material. It's surprising how well he explains it and actually makes it interesting. Feel like I'm learning something even if I probably won't be earning an A.
He required students to do independent work and think for themselves. That was difficult at first. But if you work hard you end up learning more in this class than any other. Plus he gives great advice on writing papers I wish I had earlier.
I'm not a big fan of learning political science material but this guy has some magical powers that had me enjoying the class every single day! Love his sarcasm and humor. Don't be a softie, he could pick on ya but its never that serious.
Attendance is really not mandatory, just know when the quizzes are. He lectures the whole time and makes it worth listening to with his humor. Just pay attention to his lectures and do all the homework (it is really easy, has to be typed though) and you will pass the quizzes.
Was not looking forward to this class. Turns out it was lots of fun and really interesting. Actually looked forward to coming to class.
every other class is a hw. but simple. the class is easy. you really dont need to study, easy A
Culbert is a very knowledgeable professor who makes pols interesting with his dad humor and connects the material to the real world. No textbook is needed and he uses a free online program to do easy quizzes & the reading. He gives a lot of assignments but they're SO easy and not long but they must be typed so invest in a printer! Def recommend.
Professor Culbert is one of those professors that everyone just wishes to have because he's not hard, but he goes over the important aspects of each section. This year he went over the election year perfectly giving all the information that was necessary for a student to understand. He has an extreme amount of knowledge in the field of PS.
He's ok, he's really laid back and easy going. You're graded mostly on written assignments, which are pretty easy. The quizzes & final are super tough though. It's just not enough to have a basic understanding of the material. Not bad though, nice dude.
Enjoyed it so much, changed my major to Poli sci. Nuff said.
Great prof! Really loved coming to class. Made learning fun.
He is funny, chill, and his lectures are great. I learned a lot about government in this class and it was super interesting. There is a lot of homework, but it's easy and quick and it has to be typed. The quizzes and finals are super easy just study the study guide he gives you. Highly recommend him!
Really loves his topic. Seems to care about our learning. Tests are harder than I would have thought, but easy if you're prepared and paying attention. Would like to take more classes with this professor.
Tried to do a lot of group activity, and I didn't really like that. Better when he lectures. He really cares about the topic, and wants us to too. Would take again for sure.
Thought this course would be awful. Was dreading taking it. Turns out it was really really good. Professor Culbert made it so. Really enjoys the topic and took time to make sure that everyone got their questions answered. Feel like I learned something really useful in this class.
Pretty easy pass. He's interesting and is passionate about the subjects that he teaches.
Really enjoying his lectures. Thought this class would be boring. Prof makes it interesting. Take his class!
Prof Culbert is passionate about his field and wants his students to care about govt too. He encourages discussion instead of boring powerpoint lectures. Easy HW assignments were due almost every class. Tests are easy if you pay attention & takes notes. Hates when you use your phone in class.
Professor Culbert is one of the best professors at CSULA. He makes it extremely easy to pass his class, all you have to do is pay attention to his lectures and keep up with the homework assignments. Tests are based directly on the student learning objectives, super easy.
One of the least intelligent professors with a PhD, that I have encountered. In short, he is the kind of professor who feels the need to refer to his attained PhD to describe his intelligence.
He's a great professor, and pretty understanding that life is sometimes going to get in your way of homework and tests, so he gives an extra 5% of extra credit. He also does give quiet a bit of homework, but it all prepares you for the exam. He also allows a page of notes for the midterm and final.
It's only been a few weeks but I haven't missed a lecture yet and don't plan to. Three days a week and it's some of the most entertaining and interesting stuff I've seen. Take this class!
Ending my first semester at csula and culbert has made my first semester such a positive experience. He really enjoys teaching and wants his students to as well. There were many hw assignments but all were very easy (this is coming from a freshman). Test are not hard AT ALLLL if you show up to lecture and review the learning objectives.
Professor Culbert is very funny and is a very nice guy. He gives a lot of easy homework that are papers, but he also uses Inquizzitive which is really annoying because you pretty much bet points on questions and if you feel you know the answer you may be wrong and lose a good amount of points. Other than that, this was a cool class.
Awesome professor! such a great helpful and funny person. his lectures are so interesting and he makes you want to learn and lures you into the subject without trying. very easy as long as you do and turn in the work. assignments and midterms are super easy!
He is amazing. I would love to take his class again. All he wants is for you to learn that's it and I have never seen someone so passionate about the government. His assignments are easy points and the finals are everything in the student learning objectives.
He was a good professor because he made his students aware of government and engaged them with humor and energetic manner. Several days he would assign homework out of the blue. His tests are open note but only one page. Use the student objectives to study. The "inquizitive" assignments are annoying and feel that I didn't really learn.
This class is difficult and the way Culbert teaches makes it more difficult and confusing. He's not helpful when you ask questions and is condescending. He gives a lot of homework and not enough time to complete it. He didn't clarify how our final would work until 1 week before our final was due. The final was a complicated 20 page paper.
I would never take him again. He gives out so much hw and a lot of reading. He is the worst. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!! He makes me want to drop out.
Took him last semester for POLS1000 class. He is an amazing and hilarious professor. Learning more about politics was fun. Definitely recommend him!
He wasn't the most effective professor. I feel like he was trying to make pols as simple as possible for us using simple terms but in turn, it didn't make any sense and I didn't know how what he was saying correlated to the course material. He relied heavily on his TA to do most of his work. Easy A, but wouldn't recommend if you're a pols major.
He was an amazing and energetic lecturer. Exams are one page open notes, based on student learning objectives in the syllabus. Like someone else said, inquizitive assignments were annoying and not helpful. He said we would save trees at the beginning of the semester then he assigned us a lot of short writing assignments that we had to print out.
Prof. Culbert made learning about statistics fun and meaningful. Laid back, but also cared about us learning. Was more fun than I thought. But it was very challenging.
He is really passionate about his work and it shows through his lectures. He gives many examples that break down the key concepts of a topic then applies them to a broader picture. It is very lecture heavy and he doesn't post any of the slides or examples online so it is important to take notes and be in class. Also he hates phones and laptops.
Terrific professor
He is a really amazing teacher, currently have him right now and loves to talk about current events and gets you really interested in looking up the news everyday. He wants you to know what he is teaching and also really is passionate for Politcal Science !
Very chill professor that makes politics fun and relatable. Even if you don't like politics he will try his best to change that. He's smart and his lessons are very clear and prepares students very well before assignments. His tests (he gives only about 3) can be a burden but if you study they shouldn't be too bad. Overall not a bad course.
Really easy class, you get a lot of small 1 point homework assignments that dont take long to do and hes an easy grader so hell almost always give you the 1 point. Had 2 midterms and a final which were easy and only made up of a few short answer questions. Hes hilarious and his lectures are super entertaining! Overall a pretty chill class!
He a very chill professor. He honestly cares more about you feeling comfortable and less stressed in his class. He doesn't give that much homework and he's a very easy grader. Homework is very easy, you just write a paragraph or 2 and you will get 100%. Midterms are like the homework he gave you. He teaches really well and his class is an easy A.
I think he was an absolutely terrible professor. Screams at his students and good luck if you have anything going on in your outside life because you won't pass. He's condescending, rude, and overall arrogant.
Culbert is super nice! His lectures are funny and full of opinions. This political class actually had me interested in politics and made me understand the terms of government. Assignments are very simple and everything used in assignments and lectures/discussions can be used for tests and final.
HONEST REVIEW: Dr. Culbert is caring, helpful, and of all, very hilarious. Zoom sessions were fun and the students will learn a lot about the certain topics at hand. He gives a lot of homework, but in the end, it helps the students with succeeding in the course. He is very up to date, he relates a lot to the younger generations and their struggles.
Dr. Culbert is an excellent educator. He embodies the liberal technocratic attitudes needed for a career in the PMC's best grifts like Brookings or the civil service, and he'll unconsciously teach you the right cultural approaches to making it after college. He's got humor, passion, and healthy boundaries. A rare specimen.
Try to avoid this professor if you can. The assignments are not hard by any means, though some are time consuming. He will make you buy an online book HE wrote that costs almost $100, but there is nothing except a timeline on it that is full of typos. He will give assignments based on the book that basically haves you writing the book for him.
Took POLS1000 lecture and decided he'd be great for the quantative class.... he was a completely different guy in POLS2189. Condescending, rude and expected us to teach ourselves. I understand the subject is difficult but he was of NO help. Often got upset that the whole class was LOST,wonder why... I would 100% avoid him. Easy A if its POLS1000.
He would give homework after every lecture and would expect it to be turned in the same day by 10 pm. Two midterms were taken and one final. He would always tell us that late work was not permitted and would still let us turn it in late confusing af. Just do all the homework and try your best with the midterms and the final.
don't take him. seems nice has a big ego & is very confusing. lectures are more meetings than learning environment. makes bad jokes, has a cringe sense of humor. unclear in his grading criteria. in class he rambled about how he doesn't like to grade. says email is an important communication method & ignores you. just ask other teachers about him
Super fun and super engaging. Works hard to make the class fun. Thought I would hate the class. Was better than I thought because Prof. made it interesting.
Awesome lectures. The class is fun and interesting. I'm much more interested in politics than I thought I would be.
Honestly feel like he grades the mid-term exams way too hard, in the 2nd semester right now and all you can do is try your best. Even joining the lectures didn't really help me that much if I'm being honest. Make sure you do homework cause the homework will help if you are struggling with exams so try not to miss an assignment
Great Professor I loved his lectures, you can tell he has a passion in the subject. In order to stay on track make sure you read required chapters. :)
If you want to learn knowledge from his class, it is not a good idea. He said lots of unnecessary stuff and trash-talking. He is an accounting person who is not like a man. Attending every time and want us to use weird code put into the chatbox. Also, He is not good at email if you ask him a question(never reply and ignore them)
DO NOT TAKE CULBERT CLASS. This Professor is the worst.
worst prof i've had all year; extremely hard grader, doesn't care ab his students w/disabilities (& he's super mean to this one student who has difficulty understanding the material), doesn't answer his emails, thought it would be a good idea to assign a midterm a week before finals. i only took this class for credit, and would never want him again
He's disrespectful towards students, if you don't understand material don't bother taking this class because he will get annoyed whenever you ask something and will mute you or ignore you, as he does this to a classmate of mine. Your job as a teacher is to answer questions a student has and if youre going to be rude, just dont be a teacher.
Simply did not care. Lectures were boring due to how he would go off topic most of the time and we would never know what or when we'd actually learn. Disrespectful, egoistic, and ignorant to students' emails. I wouldn't have a problem with the class being online, but I emailed him regarding a personal matter and was flat out ignored.
I'm not sure why some of the other students are so angry with Dr. Culbert. His class has been very informative and a lot of fun. One of the best classes I've ever had.
book a scam, tough grader, was really mean to this one kid who could be on spectrum that would ask a lot of questions, switched up and made attendance mandatory and got mad when people only showed up for secret passwords he would do. dont listen to this meat riders lol they only say this cause they like politics. boring class and lame teacher.
WORST class I have ever taken. The material was easy to understand BUT lecture-heavy. His syllabus says that you don't need to attend class, but midway through the semester, your grade actually depended on you showing up to class. Our second midterm and final were a week apart. DON'T recommend taking this class!
I took this course over the summer. hated the class. felt like dropping out so many times because of this class. would give assignments back to back and the assignments were a lot just to be 1 point. the midterms and the final was worth most so i suggest you do really well on those. did not bother to show up when he said he would have zoom meetings
This professor is ok. His lectures are boring to me and teaches what you learned off of the homework a day before. The homework is too much work just for it to count as 1 point. He is not bad but if there are better professors, take them instead.
This was a really good class and you get a lot of opportunities to get a good grade. Unfortunately, he did cancel classes a lot, which sometimes made the readings hard to understand. But generally, if you just reached out to him he would explain things. Be prepared to read a lot.
Totally thought I would hate this class. Ended up loving it. Prof. Culbert taught us how to learn from our failures. Might be the most important lesson I've ever learned.
I understand that not everyone likes this professor. But he genuinely cares about students learning and his lectures are a lot of fun. Really enjoyed the course. Made me want to major in Political Science.
Awesome Professor! Made the material easy to understand, interesting, and relatable. Assigns a lot of hw based on the questions at the end of each chapter(easy but time consuming). Hw is graded on completed/ incomplete. Two midterms & 1final based on the hw/ lectures. If you attend/do most lectures & hw you should pass with no problem.
Professor Culbert is a humble man. He always wants his students to make sure they learned something that day. He is interactive with his students which is what makes a really good professor. Very funny as well and will help you with anything. He gives a bunch of homework though. There isn't a day where he doesn't give a assignment. But he's cool.
Did not think I would like this course or be interested. Prof. Culbert changed all that.
Dr. Culbert is a great guy but if you are someone who prefers low frequency & high stakes, his classes are not for you. I have had him twice and in both classes he makes you do a worksheet of some sort every week. Not a big deal but it gets annoying, because they are usually time consuming.
Unethical
awful. to much work for a intro course.
This professor does not care about the students. He is unprepared and assigns the midterm next to the final. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPEND HOURS DOING ASSESSMENTS. He is a tough grader too and if you do not complete the assignments how he assigns it he will give you a zero.
this guy is the laziest and worst professor i have ever had in my whole years of going to school this guy makes us do big assignments only worth 1 point and give us the worst midterms based off current events with articles DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY EVEN FOR CREDIT EVERYTHING IS TIME CONSUMING AND HE DOESNT REAPOND TO EMAILS HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT NONE
Weekly assignments that are very time consuming. 2 Midterms and 1 Final that are 4 open response questions. No late work, assignments are closed by due date. Very Do- able class, just need the time for it.
This course was much better than I thought it would be. Prof. Culbert made it much more interesting and more fun.
I enjoyed the course and the online lectures. He also helped me out when I had family health problems. Culbert is a good professor.
Really helped me understand politics and the election. Loved the class.
The professor assigns a lot of assignments, but they're manageable if you stay on top of the readings. Unstuck AI and the free textbook were super helpful for nailing the midterms and final.
The best political science professor! Professor Culbert is chill and very interactive in lectures. His lectures are very fun and enjoyable. It is a lot of writing assignments each week and the grading can be slow but you learn a lot and appreciate his teaching.
