Knows everything about the subject and has very good lectures. He gets into the lecture too much somtimes and give alot of info that you don't need. Gives reviews which are almost the same as the test. He is easy but you have to study.
very good professor knows his stuff. Gives a lot of extra credit, reviews are just like tests.
Test are hard but somewhat similar to the reviews. Don't just do the reviews or you'll set yourself up for a low grade. Possibilites of making over a 100 (max 110) on his test. Quizzes are simple, lectures boring, gets to involved into worthless info
Excellent professor. By far the best mathematics professor I have had as a mathematics major. I took Calculus I and Calculus III with him. Damn good professor
Good professor. He does a lot of proofs and does not really do example problems, but he is willing to help if you ask.
He's a very knowledgeable about Calculus, and is sometimes funny in class. He's by far the best calc teacher out of the rest. If you've taken Calc before in highschool than Calc should be a breeze.
Very knowledgeable teacher. Explains concepts clearly and always starts off a lecture by reviewing the last point he made the previous class. Personally does reviews for all the exams. Study and you'll do well.
Best math professor around-easy to understand and ALWAYS willing to help. In order to get an "A" make sure you go to the review sessions and concentrate on the trickier homework problems.
He is an excellent professor.
awesome professor, you actually get a sense of what calculus is about, you will miss out if you don't go to class, tests are all uniform now and on computers at CASA. you have 3 tests and a final, plus the quizes in recitation. we got to drop our lowest test, tests are exactly like the pratice tests so make sure you know how to do all the problems
Garret is da ****in' man..Let me tell you something. I would take any class with this guy. And hey, for someone whose in 60s, he's hot as hell.
was the editor of that huge green Calculus book everybody uses for Cal 1-3, so he really know's his stuff, which is great! I did miserably in elementary functions, but since Etgen's such a great professor, I got an 'A' in his class! Regretfully, though, i eventually got kicked out of the Engineering college...
very good /
He is better than Walker. He has his tests at CASA. Gives a lot of in class quizzes if he feels the class is slacken off. If you can get a hold of the old exams that were administered by CASA, you should do well.
He is very good. I had him for three semesters of math and he the best so far.
He's very clear when discussing the main points of each section. His test in Cal3 are similar to his review. If you can go to his review, he discusses and shows you how to approach the problems. I got an A in the class.
Basically hes just a down to earth prof. If you take him for long enough youll get use to the way he teaches, btw he only curves quizs a bit. Other than that no curves or extra credit.
Excellent professor, I really recommend him.
Not good. Attend the first lecture then read his text... it's nearly identical. The tests are given in casa. Many students will find the class to yield an easy A. Don't really learn ODEs.
amazing professor, truth I never took his class but I did attend his reviews. He taught me Cal 2 & Cal 3 in an hour and my professors could not do that in an entire semester. He is soooooooo good and you will learn so much, he is so inspiring as well and reminds me of my 5th grade teacher.
Very good professor, knows the material (WROTE THE BOOK), and he helps a lot, if you study, and DO THE HOMEWORK, U can get an A easy ( I dint do the homework, only the quizzes and got a B). GREAT GUY!
Good teacher for those who picks up things quickly and learn fast. If you are the opposite, take Morgan.
Can’t teach at all .I don’t know why he does it .
He's a great professor. recommended =)
Do your homework, take the online quizzes, go to class for the pop-quizzes (and don't believe Etgen if he says that there won't be a quiz that day), and if you're not a math person, take the workshop cuz it will really help you. Tests r easy, make sure you do the old ones cuz they're very similar. Overall, it's an easy class.
Very good teacher, very clear and straight forward. Helpful and cares about his students if they care. Go to class, do hw and quizzes and you should get an A easily.
Don't take him. He's really short tempered and if you ask questions, he looks at you like you're stupid and are asking pointless questions. He's all over the place and really unorganized.
he goes at a very fast pace. if you don't go to class it is unlikely that you will pass. I went to most of the classes and I am on the verge of failing. morgan is definetly a better teacher
Good for people that pick things up quickly, if not then take morgan. In my opinion he is a great math teacher. He gets through the material quick and he is clear in what he says. I do admit sometimes I didnt understand him but it was Calculus, you're bound to get a lost once or twice. The text is online and you need it for the homework only.
Enginering Math is easier than Calculus, but Etgen rushes though material too quickly, and does not adequately "show the math" or make reference to his rapid problem-solving steps(such as combining like terms, factoring, etc) when he's scribbling examples on the board, so it's hard to follow him.
Best math teacher I've had at UH. Very direct in his teaching. Just tells you what you need to know. I never read the book, just did the homework. Attend class, take notes, and do the homework. Tests are nearly exact to the review.
Good teacher. Kinda wastes times proving formulas, but he shows a lot of pictures to help us understand the lesson. I didn't do the homework at all and i still got a B. Bewteen the quizzes he assigns online and the quizzes in the math lab, you'll have plenty of practice. He sometimes skips a step or two, so you need to know the basics in his class.
Go to class, listen attentively, make sure you do (and understand) the homework. If you do those things, you are set for an easy A. He thoroughly explains everything in class and doing the homework will help you so much on the test since the problems are very similar. He likes that people do well in his class and will reward you if you work hard.
Dr Etgen expects you to know what he teaches you, but he actually teaches it. In a world where math teachers are often difficult to understand, he speaks with a loud, clear voice. He isn't easy, his grading isn't relaxed, but if you go to lecture and do the homework you should do well.
Cal 1 is easy, and sort of fun. Etgen wrote the book, of course it is required, plus if you learn theory, the rest is plugging in numbers. He is much for help, after all UH is a research school. THE GUY IS A FREAKING GENIUS THOUGH! He can do stuff in his head that I spend 2 minutes doing on paper and a calculator! He is overall good though.
Be well-rested and prepared for a fast ride in Etgen's Engineering Math! He is energetic, loud, and clear, but works examples too quickly. I was literally dizzy after some lectures! The Math Lab tutors helped fill in the missing pieces, simplified some procedures, and showed me valuable shortcuts. Overall, Etgen was an excellent professor.
Etgen has a great energy and enthusiasm, he has a sense of humor, and he is an effective instructor. But you MUST be able to recall (and quickly apply) your Trig, Cal 1 and Cal 2 skills or you will be in trouble! He will NOT slow down or step back to explain derivatives integrals if you are unable to keep up during lectures!
If you understand Cal 1&2, do the weekly quizzes, daily quizzes, and know how to do the review questions before the test. You'll be fine.
Very helpful, just do all of the homework and pay attention in class. I never looked at the book. Be sure to take notes in class. The TA should be able to help fill in any gaps that there may be casue he skips over steps sometimes. If youre paying attention and know your cal 1 youll do fine. Oh and study.
He is very loud and clear in his lectures, periodically making jokes to keep students' interest. His lectures are so good, I did not have to do much work outside of class to understand the material. Very good teacher, I would recommend other students to take him
AWESOME teacher!!! Explains everything very clearly. Holds study sessions, gives study guides which are very similar to the exams. He will bump up your grade alot if you do every online, popers, and HW quiz. Take him.
Great teacher. highly recommended. funny too.
This is the best professor i had this year, and this was also one of my more difficult classes. DO your quizzes, because the tests will look very similar to the questions asked on the quizzes. He goes through examples pretty fast, but still great teacher. Definitely recommend this teacher, i dont think i can forget what i learned in this class.
Best teacher I've ever had...in any class...period, and I've been randomly taking courses since 1999. He was absolutely 100% clear, effective, and hilarious on more than one occasion. One of the few teachers @ UH actually worth keeping around.
Great teacher! He moves very quickly, but he is thorough and knows his stuff. Funny as hell too. Do the quizzes and homeworks for sure, as the tests look very similar. I wish all of my professors could be as dedicated and prepared as he was!
Great professor, hilarious, and definitely not boring unlike many math professors. He makes math fun!
very very very fast teacher... barely does any of the examples for the harder material correctly the first time. many times the students had to correct him. Go to the reviews, they will save you. I dislike how he holds the reviews not during class time. We have other classes to go to during that time.
Great teacher. Do the homework and quizzes and exam reviews and you will do fine. I did it all and came out with an A+. It took some work but he teaches very clearly and is helpful if you ask him. Helped me every time that I was stuck. I would recommend this teacher to anyone. Tests only 50 minutes long.. You must know how to work problems fast!!!
He gives you all the tools you need to succeed in his class. Attend the lecture, do the quizzes, do the exam reviews and you'll get an A. I did. He makes jokes in class to lighten it up and is very nice and approachable. Only thing is that he works the problems so fast that sometimes he gets confused. But other than that he's a great professor
Best math professor ever
He's an intelligent prof and too smart for teaching. He makes some stupid mistakes even though he is the oldest math prof in UH (taught Jeff Morgan in the past). I passed his class with an A only because I used Rebecca George's online lectures. He has some serious problems with hearing other people. I highly recommend him for Cal III.
Analysis is a hard topic to understand if you do not like proofs. Professor Etgen makes the class easy enough to understand and passable. Long as you do the homework and do the quizzes you are only half way close to passing. It is important that you memorize everything word for word in his class.
Nice professor, make tests easy. take him.
Excellent professor. Here are some tips: LISTEN to the theory. WRITE the examples he works out; they are useful in doing the quizzes and online assignments. He's a breath of fresh air from these boring professors. By no means a "gimme" but he makes the class manageable and accomplishable.
IA is a difficult class because its mainly theory. Ch3 (beg.ch) was the most difficult 2 me but after that it gets easier because it reviews cal 1&2. I suck at theory so I went to his off.hrs. once a wk and it helped alot! Dont give up work hard to try to understand, work hard and it will come. I made a C and worked darn hard for it so im pleased.
Really funny, helpful guy. Just keep up with the EMCFs, Quizzes and study for the tests and you'll be fine
Do his Sample Exams, Emcf and online quizzes and its easy to get through this class. Professor is helpful and easy to understand whatever he goes through in class. 3 exams(100pt) and finals for 200 pts and 100pt HW n all. Lowest exam grade wud be replaced with finals divide by 2. So not that Bad!!!!!!
Prof. Etgen is very effective at explaining the material and giving examples. He answers questions thoroughly and in as much detail as required. He is clear about what he expects you to know for the exams. I studied the info he gave us verbatim and practiced all the homework problems and I made a 100% in the course.
Best professor ever. Ohhhkkkkk. Hahah. Teaches material very thoroughly and knows his stuff really well. Would recommend only him as far as engineering math goes. Everyone else teaching this class is terrible. He does too many examples in class that if u see them and do his emcfs and online assignment u will get an A. Also really entertaining and very funny.
Great at online Differential Equations.Very clear and helpful examples. Nice and helpful prof. Take it!
Lot of quizzes that will force you to practice. Tests and final are just like his review only easier
Go to class! He knows what he is talking about most of the time. 4 exams, little EC on exams. final was optional. Textbook wasn't used. Pulled out an A- in the end. Study the Index of terms and theorems, homework, and lecture notes and you'll ace the exams. You will have to memorize a handful of proofs. Index of terms and theorems
Great guy. Class was okay. He assigns LOTS of homework. I use OneNote for my homework and I'm typically submitting a 13-page PDF for his homework every week. Tests are fair and he does a great job at providing reviews. Homework/tests returned in a timely manner. He does Wimba reviews as well which rae extremely helpful.
This guy is a boss! Hilarious lectures and he really knows his stuff. He wrote all the math books at UH, he knows where to find the stuff down to the page and location on the page. Attend his class, he tells you what is on the tests. Go to office hours, he loves to answer questions and help you. Ahhh, this class was hilarious!
I took Etgen for a summer mini, and I'm so glad that I did. He is extremely helpful, and makes sure that he explains things thoroughly. If he sees confusion on your faces, he acknowledges it, and re teaches what he just went over. Very helpful, and does as much as he can to get you prepared for tests. Lots of homework, but it's necessary.
Do it. Achieve.
he used to be a good teacher , but he start change and make it harder , my brother took his spring 2014 and i took him fall 2014 he is totally different , dont take him very hard .
Dr. Etgen is awesome! Hilarious lectures, lots of assignments designed to help you learn the subject, availability of office hours, etc. If you go to class everyday, and read the textbook and do homeworkonline quizzes ahead of time, you will succeed and your brain power will improve.
He makes this class "a difficult class" manageable to understand. Do HW, if you want more do the HW of the textbook. Understand the examples of his notes. Exams are sort of hard, but if you his HW, and understand the examples of notes and do the HW of the textbook then you can pass the exams. Main thing is understand the homeworks and his examples
Although E-Math is a tough class Professor Etgen explains the information very well, and even gives you tips on what to study for exams. This may seem irrelevant because most teachers give you a test review, but if you go to his review sessions he will take a step further by explaining that the hardest concept applications will not be on the test.
Engineering math is a fun class. The tests make up 83 percent of your score, lowest replaced by final. Practice tests mean nothing in terms of extra points, however he does drop lowest quizzes, emcfs and poppers. You'll enjoy this, lot of factoring very little calculus. Very algebraic.
Fun lectures, great guy and organized lectures. A lot of quizzes and homework which may seem tedious but at the end is just practice for the test which is what you need to pass Engineering math, a lot of practice. Take him, not hard to get an A and if you do all the work you will definitely pass.
Very good professor, will explain any problem patiently if you go and ask him. He does tend to crack jokes in class so won't make it boring in class. However this is one class that you don't have to attend everyday since he does post the notes online, find someone who can cover for poppers if you miss the day. Practice old exam, you will be fine.
He explains better than most professor. if you practice the old exams you should get a good grade. class can be time consuming if you don't understand. do follow behind and you should be fine. one of the best math professor at uh.
This man is hilarious. He makes jokes in the middle on the class. He looks rude but he is not. If you ask around he is the best to take this course and I agree. I was struggling when I started and i thought I was not gonna pass the class. I didn't pass the first test. It was devastating. I finish calc 2 with A. He replaces lowest test with final.
Here is the deal: 3 tests 100 pts each, 100 quizzes and EMCF (all online) and 200 pts final. Final divided by 2 replaces the lowest if it is higher than a test. I think he curved a little because I needed 2 points to get a B and I got a B. Homework (Online quizzes and EMCF's) is a lot. Study hard for the final. That's the key... Excellent man...
Excellent lecturer. He is a little fast and skips certain steps, but go home and check his notes. Very organized. He always posts his lectures on his website. Very responsible with it. Homework is a lot but do it. Do old tests and make a group of classmates to share EMCF and tests. Ask others about what was on the test they took before you go.
he really knows the material. really good prof. may seem rude, but don't mind it. if you can do the test review he posts for every test youre gonna do really well.
First of all, professor Etgen is super sarcastic so don't get into your feelings if he calls you out lol but bc of that, it makes it hard to ask questions bc he always answers sarcastically so beware! But overall he's great, make sure you know your stuff, tests are 50 mins/7 MC/3 open-ended, if you mess up on the multiple choice you're screwed!
Dr Etgen was a perfect professor. He really explains concepts well and his sense of humor is great. So many people stopped showing up to class. While attendance isn't mandatory this is a mistake. He goes over what to expect for this exams, answers to EMCF's. Also he gives easier test questions if you come to class. Made 100's on 4 exams. A in Emath
Professor Etgen is good at teaching students, but is a little rude or condescending at times (it doesn't bother me). Don't leave his class in the middle of a lecture, he will embarrass you. Tests are not too hard but time is a big issue (CASA testing). This class has a TON of work. This class had the most work for me.
Explains lectures through theorems which can be difficult to understand but the actual math involved is rather simple. Make sure to do all of the EMCF's and quizzes to maximize points, including the exam reviews he posts, and you will be fine. Definitely form study groups
Able to present things in a way that seems intuitive. Moves very quickly through problems. Exams are mostly multiple choice with a few free response. Exams are easier than quizzes and homework. Lots of quizzes and homework with some very long problems.
I heard good things about this professor, but I really did not like his lectures. His explanations just didn't click for me. I am currently using diff eqns in my other classes, and it is all now making sense. I feel that Etgen hurt more than he helped. I thought the class was easy, but I didn't absorb the information. He is also half deaf.
He isn't as great as people make him out to be. He moves very quickly during examples, and provides weak explanations while going through them. His notes are quite sloppy, leaving very few other resources to aid in studying. I attended every lecture, but learned very little in them. I did most of my learning out of class.
A very sarcastic, but funny, professor that moves very quickly and teaches by theory. The online casa quizzes were very long and covered much more detail than what was tested on. Try to get access to previous exams and use them as one of your resources to prepare for the exams. I put in the most work the days leading up to the exam and managed an A
Basically 60% homework. Bc you learn by doing problems and making your own shortcuts. Class feels like 6 credit hours. Etgen is amazing, notes are kinda sloppy but you can understand. Old exams arent really necessary but are clutch. Sunday quizzes and practice exams are pretty hard, good for exams. MAKE SURE TO LISTEN IN CLASS. Cant stress enough
Good professor, overall that can come off scary and rude at first but if you go to office hours, hes the nicest person and explains everything. Lectures can be long and get boring but he quips a joke here and there to keep it entertaining. Do reviews and practice and shouldnt be too much of a problem.
Lectures can be long and boring sometimes he often rushes through the lecture, but he post it online, so we can go back to refer to it. Test/quizzes are through CASA. Expect a lot of Quizzes/EMCF. Material wise, this class wasn't difficult just the amount of work given made it tedious and time consuming.
It takes patience to fully appreciate the teaching ability of this professor. He's very knowledgeable about the material & its applications, has thorough lecture notes, and is lenient when it comes to deadlines. He goes fast but posts everything. Beware however, as he can be rough in the classroom; not being the best at being courteous and kind.
Etgen is a good professor. His lecture notes were better than any of the textbook material. Old exams helped prepare for the exams. You need to put in work however
Good teacher but I think he's a bit overhyped. Undoubtedly, 3321 is a tough subject to grasp, but he tries to make it easy. Writes fast and referring back to his notes can be difficult to understand(process & handwriting is unclear.) Three CASA tests(100)+final(200)+quizzes(100) totaling 600 points. 540 needed for an A. Best bet for your 3321 prof.
Etgen is a great professor and he's wonderful at explaining material very simply. My main issue with the course was how much homework we had. It makes sense because Linear Algebra and ODEs require practice to master, but each homework was so time consuming that I had such little motivation. Grading Scale is properly communicated. Good class overall
Etgen is a pretty good teacher. He goes fast but if you tell him to slow down he will. He's helpful in his office hours too. Two homeworks a week, a quiz every sunday, pop quizzes in lecture, three exams and a final. final can replace lowest test grade.
Professor Etgen makes EngMath easy to understand, and shows plenty of applications. Pay attention on the lectures, as he underlines questions, that might show up later on exams. Be prepared for lots of homework and mandatory Sunday quizzes. Would def take him again!
Lectures are boring and theres lots of homework for you to do. He can be pretty funny sometimes though! The material is very hard in the beginning. Definitely study in groups and use the internet as a second tutor! If you feel that your grades arent up to par, you can try asking him to regrade your free response. My grade went from a B to B+ after.
Lots of Homework, try to get access to the old exams and you'll pass, its hard to stay awake in his class and the materials are too much. so don't wait until the day before exam to study even if you have the old exams. pop quizzes and almost 3 homework assignments per week. He sometimes make jokes and that makes him interesting.
Professor Etgen is very knowledgeable of the subject. You show up you take notes you pass. Easy as that. The class is not that hard but its not an easy A if you dont study and understand the material youll have a hard time. He tries to help out as much as he can
Professor Etgen is an okay professor. His lectures can be somewhat boring at times, or confusing even as he goes very fast. Expect to spend some time outside of class understanding material. Take advantage of tutoring opportunities and groups, and try to find old tests! They are the best way to study. LOTS - and I mean LOTS - of homework though!
Etgen is an amazing professor I feel like we take advantage of his kindness. He gives you a lot of homework but if you actually learned calculus then you will be fine. If you slack off it won't help and catching up will make you fall behind.
Professor Etgen is one senile old man, but man he is absolutely hilarious and downright awesome. Do NOT hesitate to take a class with this guy. 10/10 would recommend
Etgen is a great professor. You can easily look at his notes online and learn all of the materiel. He gives tons of homework. If you do the homework, quizzes and practice test you will easily get an A. PS do not miss a multiple choice on a test it drops the test grade a whole letter point. In addition, the final replaces the lowest test grade.
Etgen is a very intelligent professor. He moves on a bit fast on some topics but he does give lots of practice examples to go over in class. Easy class if you pay attention and keep up with the material he covers. Sometimes he skips steps and then when asked to elaborate says he's vague and says something like "you just do it" lol
He is a very good professor, but you are given LOTS of work. There are normally 2-3 quizzes/homeworks per week. That being said, if you do all the work, you'll do AMAZING in the class. The homework prepares you for the class.
Be prepared to spend learning materials outside class because he goes too quick with the lecture. Though, he is still a great professor. My tip to ace the class is to keep on practicing solving problems. Youll eventually get used to it. Do the emcf/quizzes in advance because they are long. Highly recommended professor.
Overall a good teacher, but I had him for an online summer course. I enjoy math and I like to say I'm pretty good at it, but if you stop to think (during lecture) in one of his month-long courses, he'll leave you in the dust. Going to require studying the notes after class for a high grade.
I took him for a summer month long class. Grades were based on multiple emcfs, 3 tests, and an optional final. The lectures were helpful, but he can go fast so its easy to get lost. Recommend going over notes again after lecture. Emcfs were long and there's one about every other day, but really helpful for learning material. He was a great teacher.
summer class is difficult, I almost failed to finish the last emcf. He told me he wrote the CASA textbook for the course, so for sure he knows the material..
He email us take home exams because the college was closed but gave us and extra hour then needed to finish the exams. Homework is exactly like exams. Grades are prompt and emailed. Survey is the basics. It touche topics in other required classes for your MA. Some homework questions are the same in topics like Diff eq topic and his actual DE class.
Gives you 30 minutes extra to finish exams. Homework is exactly like exams. Grades are prompt and emailed. Professors allowed me to take proctored exams at a local college near my house. Can use 2 full pages front and back on exam.
Homework is exactly like exams. Grades are prompt and emailed. Professors allowed me to take proctored exams at a local college near my house. He also worked with me throughout the semester because i had a baby. 2 full pages front and back to use on exams.
The lectures were rushed, so they weren't that helpful for the homework and quizzes(had to use textbook). There were about 2 homework assignments and 1 quiz every week. Very timeconsuming, but he will go through any problem during office hours. Tests were difficult because of 50 min time limit, but there is a practice test and review every test.
Do not take him by any chance
He's a cool . Work consisted of 2 home works and 1 quiz a week. He helps you solve the homework in office hours and will sometimes move due dates if you ask. The exams are worth around 75% of your grade, be careful. He does not curve or give extra points, but he gave two extra credit assignments and did change the grading scale to make it easier
I feel like this prof would be better in person, what everyone said about his format is true. His online lectures were very bad halfway in the semester i stopped showing up. Textbook and online calculators were my best friend. I hate casa format so much for the test , honestly that was what made this class so difficult for me.
Easy class if you pay attention and ask questions. Attendance isn't mandatory but will give you extra credit if your attendance is good and it is very easy to fall behind. You get 20 tries on quizzes and gives you enough time to complete Homework. He doesn't hear very well so will find yourself repeating questions constantly.
Dr Etgen is one of the greatest professors I've come across so far. I didn't get a good grade in his class because I didn't put in the required work. His tests are pretty straightforward. If you do the review the various sample problems and the weekly quizzes, that is more than enough. Be prepared to designate at least 2-4 hours daily.
Gives about 2 HW's a week along with a quiz. 3 tests plus a heavily weighted final. Professor Etgen at times comes off as a bit mean sometimes and he expects you to understand everything the moment you see it. However, he is very helpful during office hours and he is knowledgeable about the subject. If you want the best teacher, take Etgen
The class is a lot of work, but maybe thats typical for the math department, idk (Im a freshman). His lectures are fast, but good. Watching his recording while doing your hw helped me. The exams have a lot of weight. Like even missing one question could drop you a letter grade. You should take the class if you like math, which you probably do.
Half his lecture is wrong and he corrects it after his lecture. Only take this class if you are seriously interested in math.
As in all classes in CASA, there is a lot of homework. I found that Emath had about half the homework of Cal1-3. This class made sense with Dr. Etgen. He is a great professor in his methods of teaching. He somewhat sounds like Vizzini from The Princess Bride. Ask him to say "Inconceivable." Overall I would recommend taking him for E-Math.
While the workload is heavy with numerous weekly quizzes, the professor has an excellent teaching style filled with example questions. The professor is also open to answering questions and spending considerable time outside of class during office hours to ensure that students can grasp the material. I highly recommend this professor but be prepared
the class is tough if you don't practice the problems. Very easy if you do as is the case with most math classes. Dr. Etgen himself is a nice guy and gives you the opportunity to bounce back if you start off badly in the class. He's pretty funny but not in a conventional way, you'll have to see for yourself.
This professor is my favorite professor in UH four years adventure! If you need take engineering mathematics for major requirements, I highly recommend you took him. Must prepare and practice a lot during lectures but it will worth it!
Everything is multiple choice. He routinely yells at minority students and insults them. The lectures are waste of time; he just runs through math problems without explaining anything or showing the steps to solve anything. He's the worst math professor who I've ever had and I had math professors who wouldn't come to work.
I like math and never struggled with my math classes before but I hated his class. In his lectures he only copies questions that already have been solved on the textbook without much explanation on how to solve them. I had to figure everything out by myself. Too much homework like we have nothing else to do in our lives other than his homework.
Just genuinely not a good teacher. Insanely fast pacing with overly technical lectures that only make sense if you already know the material. He mocks students if they ask questions or don't understand something. Generally terrible at explaining the topics in a comprehensible way. I'm struggling here even though I got a 96 and 98 in Calc I&II.
Very Strict
Took him because of his high ratings, but I didn't enjoy his class at all and learnt everything on my own. Exam 2 and 3 were really tough so just keep doing questions. Didn't really like how he responded to some students but other than that he was okay.
Honestly a good professor, but he is a little tough. He said if you don't do well on exam 1 might as well drop. But he does care about his students, and wants people to do well. Best advice is to not complain and do the work, the lectures are even recorded for you
Horrendous hand writing, felt like I was taking Egyptology trying to learn how to read hieroglyphics. EMCF's (hw) aren't on any consistent schedule, and if you miss it by a minute, zero. Goes way too fast, and often skips steps. Expects you to know the material already. I got A's in calc I, II, & III. Take differential Equations b4 taking this.
Honestly a pretty good professor for a very hard subject, Im not done with the class yet but I see people complaining for no reason. He has some moments where he sucks but as of right now I have a 99 in the class. Just put your head down focus on the EMCF and quizzes and you'll be fine. Complaining wont get you anywhere in this class.
Professor Etgen's class is tough, but worth it if you put in the work. Lectures move quickly, so staying engaged and using resources like the textbook and unstuck AI are key. Exams can be challenging, but office hours help a lot.
At first his lectures were very fast paced and it was difficult to take notes but all the content was clear and easy to follow and was later uploaded. He helps a lot with homework problems after lectures ended. He always has review sessions before exams. As long as you put in effort you should be good! I'll say this class was easier than cal 3
Dr. Egten's is a great guy despite him seeming to be pushing late 80s early 90s. He records his lectures and posts them on Canvas incase you miss a day. This class is a hard yeah but the EMCFs he posted plus the quizzes helped me understand the material easily. Only downside about him is his handwriting since it's hard to understand (sometimes).
If you did well in Calc 2, you will do fine in this class as long as you lock in. Don't try, don't expect a good grade. HW isn't too bad imo (13 quizzes and 20 EHW). He records and shares lectures on the same day. He also helps out with hw after class. Be respectful too bc he is like 70-80 too or else imma get the belt
Currently in summer mini, and his material is easier to understand if you keep up with the course and practice on your own. He records lectures and uploads the notes in a timely manner. He's very respectful, and open to questions after class. Cons: handwriting is a bit messy and class is VERY fast paced
He's very funny! His lectures are very entertaining and enjoyable :D
He goes extremely fast and skips almost all intermediatory steps that you get lost within the first ten minutes of lecture. His notes and explanations are hard to follow. Doesn't make sense half the time, and self-teaching is way more effective. The professor can be very funny, but also very passive aggressive to questions.
The quizzes, ECMFs, tests, exams, and the final are mostly directly from the powerpoint lecture slides on Canvas, so as long as you review those, you should be good. Although, during the lecture on Zoom, the professor may accidentally make silly mistakes sometimes and their writing would sometimes be choppy, the typed notes are actually clear.
Like others have mentioned before his handwriting is bad, the lectures do move a bit quick but there's alot of material to cover in general. Expect an EMCF or two due per week and a quiz due every Sunday. The exams are slightly simpler versions of questions on the review quizzes. Go in with a strong algebra foundation and you should be ok.
Bad hand writing. Attend lectures or watch recordings to understand what he's writing. Great with canvas despite his old age. Tons of EMCFs. Gives actual exam problems and covers what's going to be on each exam. Good prof overall, tons of resources on canvas, just extremely bad hand writing though.
