Awesome teacher, no tests or final exam!!! very easy A if you put in a little effort; or u can just settle for a B
If you didn't agree with his views than yours were wrong. Also he dogged sororities and fraternities while in class.Since I'm in a sorority I found that inappropriate. Also he would bash certain religions which I thought was wrong since it was a rel class.
no exams or test, who cares if your feeling got hurt, you got an A
No Comments
Good teacher, only focused on some religions,NO TESTS!only papers (will proofread),easy A, a little biased (ok by me),dont sign up if you are easily offended by criticism of religions (i.e. your own), a lot of class disscussion and DAYS OFF
He has opinions and discusses them in class. So what if you felt offended, it isn't grade school. There are people and ideas that you may not agree with. His classes are interesting and easy, and he is one of the nicest people at UWF. so what if he criticized your ideas. grow up.
He was one of the most informed teachers I have had.
Howard is one of the best teachers, he loves his roll call so show up for every class. He has some funny stories, and despite what people say he doesn't 'dog' on anything but makes interesting points but covering all of the bases. A great class!
This guy totally owns it up! Funny and well informed in everything we discuss! I would definetely recommend this teacher! He is a little biased, but who isn't? Prepare for a fun class!
I loved his class. I thought he was hilarious, but very passionate about philosophy, and especially about life, which is a must in a class like Med. Ethics. I am not sure about the bias that others have mentioned though, as he seemed to be very open to a lot of the ideas of ny faith and its ethics.
You have to really like the subject Howard is teaching to enjoy him as a teacher. Otherwise he is just plain boring. He is very well informed though, so if he's teaching in your field, go for it. He is a little biased though, so don't take him if you don't like others telling you you're wrong.
i didn't understand what was going on in the class... the concepts were a little over my head. but our grade was based on a midterm paper, a final paper, and class attendance/participation so i made it through with a B, i think. that's pretty good for not understanding a word he said. easy class.
If you are a republican or just a conservative, be prepared to be extremely insulted. The class is easy; its just hard to put up wih the garbage that spews from his mouth. I was called a sstupid redneck for wearing a "chevy" hat and stating that i am a republican.
He was phenominal. If you are willing to learn something from him, you will. He's a giving professor with a true passion for knowledge. He also has a quarky sense of humor that keeps philosophy, as drab of a topic as it can be, from being too dry. Bare wit
Such a cool guy. Fun class. He is really smart i like a teacher who teaches.
I'll be blunt. Mr Howard has no teaching skills, is very boring, overcritical, and doesn't mind offending a few people. The only good thing was the way he pranced around class telling "funny jokes". He thought they were funny but everyone was laughing at him. So take this class if you need a good laugh at the expense of losing a good teacher.
Mr. Howard made the class a lot of fun. We had I think 5 quizzes, and I think 3 of them were open notes. Then we had a midterm and final paper, both which are graded very easily. Should be no reason to make anything below a B- in the class.
I had 5 classes with Mr. Howard. Don't miss roll and don't talk when he's talking - those are the most important rules. He is absolutely passionate about learning and is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He is also one of the smartest! Put your own biases aside and take his classes to learn, pure and simple. Remember that in the ontolog
Knows his subject inside and out. Brilliant at delivery and explanations. Listen, take notes and do your assignments to make a worthy grade in this class. Is that a lot to expect from a college student? Howard is a professor you will never forget.
Mr. Howard is a very interesting cat. He knows a lot about philosophy. I took him for greek philosophy with little prior knowledge of the subject. He was over my head in most lectures, but if you take notes you'll do good. Only problem 3 grades. Attendance, midterm, and final. The exams are take home essays, but if u repeat the notes you'll get "A"
Not cery easy material, but he makes is interesting. He is pretty funny and tends to talk about movies alot. Made a B in the class. I would reccommend him
Interesting class. You most definitely have to read and there is a lot of discussion involved. Not too bad with the number of assignments he gives. I would definitely take more of his classes.
Howard taught my Intro to Religion course and all he did was teach his opinion all semester. He was one of the worst professors I have ever had throughout my time in college.
i have professor Howard for an online class and so far its easy, we just read the chapter, discuss it, and our exams are to write a 2 pg paper about that chapter on a topic of his choosing. so far i have made b's on all the exams. he seems to know a lot about the topic though.
If I could change one thing it would be to have actual discussion questions for students to answer on the discussion board. Howard's requirement was: "If you don't understand something after reading the chapter then post a question, if you do understand then answer other people's questions." I really hated the discussions in this class!
A lot of reading involved but it is refreshing to see a professor so interested in their craft. Interesting subject matter, and it involves A LOT of discussion. I loved it.
Philosophy online was an interesting class. I think it would have been more worthwhile if we did something else besides write a paper each week and do a discussion each week. It got old pretty quick, especially when he expected us to view things explicitly from his perspective...something that some would see as very counterproductive to philosophy.
He loves to talk about movies, so know some obscure ones, it makes him think your smart. He is an atheist so his views on religion and topics that could deal with religion are skewed towards an atheistic approach. He is extremely fun to talk to and he allows for everyone to input their own opinion.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I do not understand some of the posts that states he is not open to others opinions. I found him to be very receptive to others view points. Not closed minded at all. Very tolerant intelligent teacher. Would highly recommed him. Alot of writing but his grading is fair. If you are intolerant dont take him.
Dr. Howard is a pretty good teacher. The only thing that I don't like is that he is completely and obviously biased against Christianity. I'm not saying this just because I am a Christian either. I did not really notice it until he made it very evident one class period. I was highly offended...
I was not a fan of his class. I am a chistian and I thought he was very offensive towards christians. However, the class was very easy.(we only had 2 essays the whole semsester)The lectures were very boring and attentence is mantatory. And is is HIGHLY againist cell phones in class!
He is the most arrogant teacher I have ever had. If you disagree with him, then you are wrong. But the class is still extremely interesting and he is an enthusiastic teacher. I absolutely loved it. It's super easy and you don't really have to read because he reviews it in class. I'm thinking about PHI as my minor now because of this class. :D
He gives 4 days to post to discussion boards on an online class with no flexability. You must post within the forst two days in order to recieve full credit. He closses the discussion on Fridays at noon giving the working person no time to do the work and does not respond to emails. I had to withdraw from his class which I have NEVER done.
Class was not hard, took it online. The class consists of discussions once a week and two papers (no final.) Make sure you do ALL the discussions,no make up.I missed 3 and it made my grade go from an A to C+. Not a very nice teacher, bit of a know it all and he talks to you as if you are a child. He doesnt seem to like technology in the slightes
This class was difficult for me because I do not enjoy reading...and this class is a whole lot of reading and quite bit of writing. You have a discussion post each week (min 50 words) and a mid-term and final paper (each 4 pages). He is a fair professor, but seems to have very liberal views that he likes to share. Overall, it was a good course.
Online class was not at all hard. Yes, you have to read and write a bit, but we are in college, Mr. Howard is not the most accessible or dynamic teacher, but he knows philosophy. Interesting discipline to study.
Great teacher no test at all just two papers one at mid term and finals attendance is worth 200 points so go and participate for 200 easy points and youll pass but i dont like the subject i just took cause it was required he very nice older guy you can talk all day and he give you power point of the lessons so use them to write your papers
Took the online into to Philosophy. Had to take the class was not interested in the class - still not interested in the class. Participate in the discussions fully, turn in your papers and don't be afraid to disagree with him. I did and still passed. Wasn't too fond of being called a molecular bigot though.
This was a very easy class. You write two papers, and have mandatory attendance, but that's it. He is very hypocritical and egotistical, though. Be prepared to be interrupted, and yelled out if you interrupt him. He will also ridiculously publicly humiliate anyone reading, drawing, texting, or doing anything other than listening to him.
Took the online class, it's fairly easy to get a good grade. Just keep an open mind. He respects your opinions unless it's closed-minded. The material is scattered and difficult to find at times, so take notes for the test.
Great professor. I took him for Intro to Philosophy and ended up receiving an A in the class. Go to class and participate because it's part of your grade. Very easy class but can be confusing at times. No actually exams or quizzes or hw, just two papers to write which are fairly easy as well. I recommend to take Howard for Intro to Philosophy.
The class structure was probably the most simple I've ever seen. One paper for your mid-term, one paper for your final. His lectures seem to take forever, but some of the content was interesting to think about. Be sure to take some notes, even though all the material is available online.
He does not require the book, but instead assigns readings available through eLearning and movies. The class consists of weekly discussion posts and essay exams. Class is not too challenging if you want to take an easy general requirement. However, he is very unorganized in his online course, making it difficult to find anything.
Really great professor. Lectures can drag on for a bit, but if you participate, you'll be fine. He is willing to help if you ask and make sure not to have any electronics in his classroom because he will flip. Papers are easy but overall, he is a great Professor.
I enjoyed this class. Although some of the topics seemed a bit redundant some were inspirational. I think it is a great course for college students. Definitely a must take.
He is a very helpful teacher and will help you get through the course. The course is sort of hard if you aren't a philosophy major but if you read the material and the power points, do the discussion posts ON TIME, and submit essays ON TIME you will pass with an easy A. Also, he does not issue quizzes or tests. The 1-page essays are your tests!
He has no method for grading. You can clearly give him the correct answers, but he will mark them wrong anyway and deduct many points, just because he feels like it. If you ask him about it, you will be sorry because it will get worse for you. At UWF, don't complain either, staff lies to cover for each other. If you complain, you will regret it
The lectures can be kinda long, but sometimes he shows movies and he's just a cool teacher.
Professor Howard basically grades you on your writing ability and comprehension of the subject matter... There were four essay exams and then a lot of discussion boards. He doesn't really care about the length of the writing, more so the content that shows you understand the subject.
Mr. Howard was a great teacher and I'm taking him for Critical Thinking next semester. He doesn't do tests, but he does exam essays. Very nice, but make sure you attend class. Also he doesn't allow electronics in class and will call you out if you have your phone our and he wont start class if someone has a laptop out.
My boy, Gary! His class is such a pleasure. If you're not afraid to really engage in class then you'll love it. I will say though, if you're gonna bring the hammer, you'd better bring the nails; don't start a debate you can't finish! I once watched him snatch a guy because he said dogs weren't people. He's a good time. You'll want to go to class.
Professor Howard can be everywhere at once with his lectures. The only work to do in class are discussion boards and essays for each chapter. It's a super simple class. Just make sure you don't plan on using tech in the classroom.
It was a pretty easy class, as long as you do your assignments. His tests are written essays and he likes to see your views on topics so don't be afraid to let your personality shine through.
His online philosophy class is very easy. It consists of only a discussion post once a week and 3 essay exams. I will say however that I got 100's on all the posts and an A on all the exams but still ended with an 89 in the class for missing one discussion post. He doesn't give extra credit or an opportunity to makeup any work you missed
Mr Howard absolutely loves to talk. He also enjoys having a conversation, though, it usually ends with him in a monologue. He'll also take concepts and give you a question to answer in the mind of a philosopher. On a few philosophical topics, he'll show movies to get the point across. 3 essay exams and participation is all he grades.
I have taken him in the past and his lectures were a bit dry but he loves Philosophy of Film. Some parts can be a little boring to sit through but for the most part it's very interesting. We watch a lot of interesting movies. As long as you don't try to interrupt him, stay off your phone, and seem engaged you will do great! He's not a harsh grader.
Best online professor Ive had! Responded to emails in a timely fashion, gave good feedback, and made sure instructions were clear. Even online you can tell hes a nice guy. A discussion post once a week and 10 problems assigned from the chapter. Hes not a tough grader so its really easy to make an A. Wish I could retake this class!
I loved this professor. The only grades he had were three exams which consisted of three essays each. No final, no pop quizzes, no assignments. Writing essays comes easy to me so this class was a breeze! It was hard to keep up with the lectures at first but I realized It was easier to listen to the lectures instead of actually take notes.
Overall great professor and easy class! Textbook definitely NOT required so don't waste your money. Only grades off of 3 exams which consist of 3 really essays. Even gives students a chance for late work which is rare! Super approachable, very nice, loves what he does, genuinely good guy.
Easy to work with, treats you with respect and values the opinions of his students. We actually had a verbal disagreement during the semester and Mr. Howard still treated me with dignity and respect throughout the rest of the semester. It's hard to find professors like this. Great experience.
Super easy class if you do the work. All I had to do was answer 10 questions at the end of the assigned chapters, and write a one page double spaced essay on the topic.
Easy class with only discussion boards and essays. However, beware of the essays since he likes to dock points for doing "the minimum length." His feedback is very vague and seems like he just copies and pastes it. As long as you submit anything and it more than the minimum length you'll get full points.
Very straightforward class and the professor is really nice. A discussion board every week and he does not grade harshly. Three "exams" that are 3 essays each. The exam prompts are given at the beginning of the year. Allows late exams with -25%. Learned a lot without feeling stressed out.
Super easy class. Weekly discussion posts and bi-weekly chapter exercises. Attendance is taken by posting/replying to discussion posts. No quizzes or exams, would recommend him! Answers emails quickly and provides necessary info required to get an A!
Very easy class, half of the class is discussion posts and the other half is three papers which are your exams. Theres no final exam for the class.
Literally the easiest A you could possibly receive. However, I wish he would actually teach. I rarely received emails from him and I taught myself by reading the textbook. You legit just have to do discussion posts every week and chapter exercises that include a short paper every two weeks.
Take this class if you want to add in an easy class to your semester. Weekly discussion posts and an exericse/2 page paper every other week. No final exam and there was no more graded content after Thanksgiving break. He was very clear on the organization of the class--make sure to read the syllabus @ the beginning of the course!
I took professor Howard several years back for Philosophy of Film and still think about his class. His class was the foundation of my screenwriting career and I use his lecture notes often as a reference when I am working on a script.
Weekly discussions and reading and three very heavily weighted papers. Make sure to post every week and oh my lanta, DO NOT forget to submit your essays or you won't pass. Grading is explained very clearly. Philosophy is one of my least favorite subjects but Professor Howard was not bad at all.
Personally, my experience with this professor was negative. I found that I was discouraged from asking questions or asking for clarification on assignments. Little to no guidance was given on discussion prompts, grading criteria, and expectations for assignments. The class material is easy, but I would choose to take it with a different professor.
I don't know how I did so well in this class, as philosophy is like reading hieroglyphics tbh. Professor Howard assigns a LOT of papers, however they don't have to be lengthy to be sufficient. My advice if you take his class is to tell yourself everything in the lessons is easy to understand and it will reflect as such in your essays. I recommend.
Discussion posts weekly that require in-depth reading of material that sounds like gibberish. Then there are 3 essay exams where he gets mad if you are not far above the minimum word count. What is the point of a word count if it needs to be at least 100 extra words than the word count????????????
If you dont know what philosophy is dont take it online, his lectures power points doesnt really answer anything for the essay exams. There are discussions post weekly for attendance, you get points off if it not satisfied to him, there are 3 essays totals he grade very tough and there 2 prompts and 4 pages total for each essay, the book sucks.
You have a discussion post every week, which isnt bad, but the reading is extensive. You also have heavily weighted exams that consist of 2 essays, with a 2 page minimum each. But, if you only write the minimum amount, he will make a comment about it, basically shaming you. He's a tough grader on the exams, and is very vague about how to do better.
Professor Howard is a great teacher. The only problem I had is the way he grades the essay exams. The exams consists of two essays in one and he does not like it whenever you meet the minimum page requirement. On top of that, the exams are HEAVILY weighted. I would not take him again, just the class.
This is the most difficult course and professor I have taken during my three years at UWF. He has unclear expectations and is an inconsistent grader. One assignment will earn you an A and the next will earn you a D. I would never take one of his courses again. I ended up with an A because I worked extra hard & did well on a few assignments. Avoid!
Professor Howard is an excellent instructor, however be aware if you take his online Critical Thinking course he only allows submissions up to Friday rather than after the weekend. Other than that he provides great feedback and is clear in his grading requirements.
For Critical Thinking class, it was easy. You submit a discussion board every week and complete a chapter assignment once every two weeks. The only hard thing was writing the essay for the chapter assignments in your own words. But the essay is only 1 page, so his critical thinking class is not hard at all.
Professor Howard is awesome. He expects a lot from you and will give feedback to help you give the best you can for the class. I wish I had found out about him earlier; I would have taken more classes with him.
Awful professor. He would not work with me on my missed assignments (I was at a Funeral). Instead I was given more work and forced to submit excused absence forms which the school said they are not allowed to do during the first week of school. I had to drop class in order to not be penalized for this.
Plain and simple assignments. As long as you participate in on-line discussions and do the assigned reading/answer questions from the reading, you'll be fine. Of note, if a one-page essay is assigned, do 20%-50% more just to be safe. Less than a page (and by that, I mean 1-2 sentences short of a full page) won't cut it.
Legit just taught myself by reading the textbook which is required and a 1 page paper every other week, as well as discussion board every week. Only thing is that there was some textbook trouble and he was no help at all, no extension or communication.
Very easy class. But you should NEVER forget to do the discussion boards. I missed two and got an 82. And he will never reopen anything, if you lost any deadline you will not be able to do it again, and if you try to make an appointment with him he will avoid and ask you to send an email instead.
philosophy of film can feel convoluted and confusingly abstract. i do think he gives great feedback and i appreciate how much he appreciates my responses, but he is not super hands-on. it's your responsibility to immerse yourself with the material, otherwise you're cooked. and do not miss those deadlines like i did
I had him for critical thinking, quite honestly, he was refreshing. He gave back our grades for our discussion posts and genuinely took time to acknowledge the work I was putting into the class. Great guy.
