He is the most helpful teacher I have ever had. He is very devoted to his research, and he is a good teacher that still has the jitters. I would recommend him to anyone. I LOVE DR.MATTHEWS!
the best prof I have ever had at USF. always willing to help in any way he can, tries super hard to bring outside stuff to peak interest and understands that you are a student with a life outside of physics. I love Dr. Matthews, he portrays what a real teacher should- you know he is there for you, not just for his resrch like so many other sci.prof
Dr. Matthews rocks! He is very helpful, really cares about his students and is makes class entertaining and interesting.
Great professor I took aplications of physics to biology and medicine 1 and 2, he is extremely helpful and he is always available I highly recomend him.
Prof Matthews is a great professor, he really makes an effort to get the class to understand and be interested in the topic. He's also kind of a goofy guy.
Ahhh what to say about Garrett. He is a great guy no doubt, but way overworked. He was always in a rush and would lose the trail of thought. Notes would be disorganized. I think it was a department problem, not his. Two days before the final we only had exam 1 grade and one Hw. No idea what my grade in the class was going to be. Great guy otherwise
Super disorganized, has huge curve b/c class average is D
My fav professor since preschool. He is the most helpful prof I've had. I dunno who else would hold an optional review session at 10pm. I got a B+ in part one and an A- in part 2. The only problem is that there is not a lot of practice material so you really have to understand what you're doing. He seems overworked and unorganized but I recommend h
Very helpful but needs more organization. I think he is overworked
Garrett gets my vote for professor of the year, lectures are interesting and entertaining due to his goofy personality. He really gets you to understand the material with drawings and explanations as well as goofy demonstrations His tests come from notes basically so you should prob. attend but a nice study guide is given also. A+ guy, great class
He is one of the best professors at USF. He knows his stuff and has a unique teaching method that works. I love his demonstrations! Tests are difficult, but he curves bigtime. He's VERY fair. My friends and I fell in love with his teaching style and goofy/nervous personality. He is overworked, though and it's evident by how flustered he always is.
Biomed Phy teacher (I think he also teaches regular physics). He's simply amazing. I really, really recommend this man. He's helpful, has a great teaching style, is goofy/nerdy, and loves what he does. "Downsides" are that he's a little disorganized (test returns can be delayed) and doesn't always follow the syllabus (delays test dates). TAKE HIM!!
Great professor. Had him for both 4702/3 and I hated physics before his class. Easily my two favorite classes at USF. He's extremely helpful and cares about his students. Has no attendance policy, but you MUST go (and take lots of notes) if you want to pass. Tests are open notes/book, but you get out what you put into it.
He is a really great professor that cares about his students/wants us to do well. The class was a lot more interesting than I expected. You pretty much have to go to class though because the topics aren't really covered anywhere else. Tests are open note. Really enjoyed this class
Biomed physics was a hard class, Dr. Matthews is an awesome professor. I took 4704 with muschol and it was soo hard i barely scraped my, After taking it with matthews i was amazed at the difference. he is sooo helpful and always makes himself available for help great guy!!!!
He's a nice guy, but also kind of unprepared. He didn't really provide any practice problems until end of the semester (he did most textbook problems in class). One test is take home, so you can get a B in the class, but the most successful were those w/strong physics ability. That seems obvious, but some make the class sound easier than it is.
This class was not easy at all. The book is horrible, it doesn't have any good diagrams, it doesn't explain how to do problems, and doesn't line up with what you learn in lecture. You have to go to class because all the notes/ problems are put on the whiteboard each lecture. Also there are practice tests, but no answers. And the tests are very hard
He is a very smart professor. You have to go to his class if you want to do well because his tests are 100% from the lecture. He is somewhat unprepared for class, and copies straight from his notes, but the material isn't too hard.
This class was great. If you're considering the Biomed Phys minor or want more physics prep for the MCAT, take it. Dr. Matthews is as clear as it gets for a physics professor and makes sure you do the best you can on exams. Give his exams the time they deserve and it's hard to do poorly (most people don't study enough) Big curve, practice exams etc
Honestly, I'm not going to lie, his exams are TOUGH. You have to be pretty good at physics. I don't care how many times you read the book, you'll clearly see that his exams are based on his notes and not the book. But, he is extremely helpful and willing to curve the exams if necessary.
Dr. Matthews is the best USF professor I've and I'm DEPRESSED he's not doing PHZ 2 SP16. :) He explains everything, has open book tests and does millions of math problems on the board. He does not use powerpoints. He speaks perfect English. He's basically a genius and a great teacher with a great sense of humor. Here I thought USF hated good profs!
Dr. Matthews was the ideal professor. Don't be deceived thinking "open book, open notes" exams being a cakewalk. Still very time limited, so you must study material,THOROUGHLY, if you want to do well. He was always happy to help, office hours, e-mail, after class, USE THESE OPPORTUNITIES. Grade from 3 exams alone, so practice early, practice often
Nice, helpful professor, always willing to help outside of class. However, he is kinda unorganized and forgetful; posts things at the last minute. Grade is based on 3 exams, 1 project. Dont need the book but you have to go to class because all the exams are based on notes. Exams are open notes, but you have to study hard because time is limited.
Exams are brutal if you do not practice, and it is the only item we are graded on. Therefore, focus on practicing repeatedly, otherwise you will not pass the course. Dr. Matthews is fantastic for help, really lenient in explaining any questions you may have, and will always be willing to help. His presentations are fantastic, and is always excited.
He is always giving various examples of how different equations can be applied. Actually exams have questions that are harder than on the practice exam and some are copy-paste from practice exam. There are 3 exams the best of which counts twice totally four exams each worth 25% of overall grade. Your grade is 100% exams for the in class version
I knew the physics professors here were bad, but he is far worse than I expected. Dont bother going to the lectures because youll end up even more confused than youd be if you just taught yourself the material. Tests are based on his notes. Extremely unorganized. Gives exam reviews but refuses to give answers for the reviews. 0/10 recommend
Dr. Matthews is not as bad of a prof as people make him out to be. He's very helpful during office hours. He explains things relatively well during lecture, compared to other profs. I had to read the textbook to better understand the material, but I've gotten As on the exams so far (before the curve, which is VERY generous). He's a nice guy.
Do not take his class. I am a 4.0 student that has gotten an F on every exam (a C with the curve) even when studying constantly and going to tutoring. He's a nice guy but extremely unorganized. His handwriting is impossible to read and he makes mistakes in the notes. Also the exams make up 90% of your grade. Just don't do it to yourself.
his first time teaching physics 1 in over a decade so I understand it was difficult for him at the beginning of the semester to dumb things down for us after teaching advanced classes. He is so caring of his students and will ask for any improvements he can do to help us understand more which I admire. Tests are literally the practice tests!
He is willing to do anything to help his students. He will move test dates for students and homework to give us extra time to study and get it done if we have other things going on. If you don't understand something, we will explain it until you do. The practice tests were literally the tests yet people still complain! I'd take him again.
This is easily the nicest professor, I've ever had, in my college career. You may not think this matters in terms of your grades - but it does, as he goes out of his way (and I mean extremely out of his way), to make sure you can perform as well as you possibly can on his exams. My advice: Read the book & especially focus on his practice exams.
He cares so much, constantly opening new office hours to help his students. Physics is an extremely hard course and he finds a way to try to make sure every student does well.
Very nice guy. Willing to help anyway he can. Unfortunately, lacks confidence while teaching. He definitely has the knowledge to teach the course. He does a poor job at translating the information though.
Dr. Matthews is easily the sweetest professor at USF! He cares about his students' success even though most of them don't show up for his lecture. He tries to make physics as enjoyable as possible with real-world connections. He's generous with curves/homework extentions/test postponing. It's a difficult subject for sure, but he is willing to help.
If you are taking physics, this is the professor to go with. 10% HW, 90% exams and if final exam is higher than your lowest reg. exam itll replace it. Homework extensions like crazy, exams get pushed back sometimes, exams are exactly like practice exams, and this professor is readily accessible for all students. I only studied the day before exams.
He genuinely cares about each student, making accommodations for anyone who needs them. His exams are challenging but curved so it makes them manageable. The practice exams help a lot, but he does not always give the answers but you can find them on Chegg. He's an overall great guy and professor and I would definitely recommend him for Physics 1.
Professor Matthews is genuinely the best professor Ive had at USF. He cares about each student and will do whatever it takes to help you understand and even makes accommodations when you have multiple exams. He is such a nice guy and a great teacher. Anyone who fails his class just didnt try, his practice exams are just like the exams & he curves
best physics professor at usf hands down, his notes are handwritten which isn't nice but he is willing to help you out a lot if you go to him (which you should do) physics is hard enough as it is (especially at usf) but he's probs your best bet to get an A , also he's probably the nicest professor at usf , very easy to talk to
At the start of the semester, I was very worried since exams were worth 90% of the grade! However, after attending classes and getting to know how kind and helpful Professor Matthews is, the content seemed to click and everything seemed pretty straightforward. He will definitely help you outside of class and is very understanding!
Dr. Matthews is a wonderful professor and really cares about his students. If you actually put in the work unlike most students in his class, you'll do really well. Practice tests help ALOT.
He is a Super Kind Professor!! He cares about the students genuinely and tries to make sure everyone gets a good grade. There's 3 test with the final, which can count twice if it's higher than one of the first 3. He always gives really nice curves. His teaching isn't the best I have to say, but he gives practice test and notes and lots of resources
Amazing professor. Truly cares about students- he pushed back exams multiple times so we could study more. Gives practice exams that are almost identical to the exam. Homework is 10%, while three exams plus a final count for 90%. The final can replace the lowest test grade if you score higher on it. Definitely take him. Very sweet guy. Won't regret
He was amazing. He cares for his students. HW is due every week, but test and HW are constantly pushed back to give time to study. Gives prac. test that is similar to exam. You are given a curve for exams and final. He opened the hw back up at the end. Skip lectures, you can still pass as long as you do hw and pract. test. Again, he is AMAZING!
Genuinely love his teaching style, little dry occasionally, but always tries and shows he cares. HW is due every week and office hours open for help or clearing up confusing problems. Exams worth 90%, sometimes curved. Know the prac. test and use homework on canvas to learn any step by step processes, you'll pass.
Humble, kind & caring, but severely lacking as a teacher. Offsets inability to teach with insane curves; folks who cheat get As, main body who stay lost & confused get Cs, even though they miserably fail every exam. He is lost during lectures and has no understanding of learning or expectation management. Disappointing, b/c physics is interesting
This professor is one of the nicest and would do just about anything to help his class do well but his lectures and teaching style are not ideal. He teaches his class the basic concepts in lecture and expects them to know significantly more In order to do well on the exams. Super math heavy but practice exams do help.
Professor Matthews really cares that his students do well and takes many opportunities to extend deadlines and provide review sessions outside of class. Yes, his practice tests are similar to his actual tests BUT he does reword the problems completely and uses different situations so you do have to know the actual material. Textbook helped a lot.
Dr. Matthews is one of the most caring, humble, and accessible professors I have had. He would rescheduling exams for students if another exam were to conflict with his. BUT 80% of your grade is exams, so be sure to DO THE PRACTICE TEST beforehand! Some exam questions might just be straight from the PT. Overall, hated physics, loved Dr. Matthews.
This is one of the most caring professors I've ever taken. He is really nice but lets face it, physics is a tough subject. Most of his exams are very similar to the practice exam, so don't skip those. My only complaint is him responding to emails is spotty at best and he gives a lot of homework with bizarre due dates.
Garrett is such a kind soul. He cares deeply for his students and will do whatever it takes to help them pass. If you're looking to seriously learn about Physics, I don't know if he is the professor for you but if you just need to pass, he's perfect :)
Dr. Matthews is understanding when it comes to the course material and will extend deadlines if needed. However the amount of work needed outside of class is substantial and the pre-lecture videos are repetitive and really baseline. It's very difficult to get in touch with him but is always helpful when he does reply. Online kinda ruined learning.
Professor Matthews is one of the most caring, genuinely thoughtful professors I have had the pleasure of taking. He's like a big teddy bear, super nice and friendly, and you can definitely tell he has a passion for physics. This class is very heavy with homework and exams are tricky, so you need to study a lot out of class.
He does not care about his students, he has so many of them, so if you even have the time to try and introduce yourself he will give you the shortest response. He says he is open for discussion on assignments and grading and homework, but if you tell him your opinion he'll make you feel worthless. His lectures suck& way too much hw. DONT TAKE HIM!
This class was excruciatingly difficult to attend and understand. The professor made little to no effort to thoroughly explain the topics, basically resorting to reading off the slides. Lectures were very boring and often strayed off topic. I would definitely not recommend this professor to other students who want to actually understand physics.
Not the best professor. His lectures put most students to sleep. If you want an A then you might just have to cheat or get last semester's exams. Most students get a B or a C at least. Office hours are all right but not the most helpful. Homework on sapling can crush your grade if you aren't careful :(
Horrible professor. He's nice but so bad at teaching. This class was harder than orgo or any upper level science course I've taken. You will only pass his class if you cheat. His lectures are practically useless, but he grades attendance. Multiple hw assignments every week. Even tho he's bad, he's not the absolute worst physics professor at USF.
I took Dr. Matthews applied physics to bulk up a pre-med transcript. Im glad I did. His passion for problem-solving was contagious. He was tough to get ahold of during his office hours, but he does right by his students. He once came in with 3 homegrown experiments to better demonstrate a point he felt he hadnt fully made in the previous week.
This class was probably one of the hardest I have ever taken, no fault to the teacher but taking physics for the first time completely asynchronous is no easy task. However, Mr. Matthews is probably your best bet to doing well. Very helpful and caring. Ended up with a very high grade thanks to generous curves.
I was scared of taking physics but for sure Professor Mathews made it all so much easier and better. He makes you enjoy the class. Homework is doable and you have 5 attempts per question. He gives a test Review before each exam and it is so helpful. Definitely take him!!!
This class was online and basically taught by a homework computer program. Dr. Matthews would occasionally post an mp4 of him completing some of the hard problems in the homework, but other than that I didn't hear from him much. Definitely a caring guy, though. Curves tests like crazy (really helps), and he often extends due dates for assignments.
Matthews is really nice and understanding, he's definitely the best option for a physics prof at USF. However, this class is ridiculously difficult no matter how hard you study. The lectures don't go over useful information and the only way to learn anything is through the book and the practice exam, and even then you will still be lost.
Physics was very hard, especially online. Matthews was understanding and seemed to care about his students and tried to give us as many options to boost our grades. His lectures online did not really help so I did have to use outside resources and study A LOT. Overall, I am happy I took him this semester because I got an A because of his help.
Prof. Matthews is nice and cares for his students. He responds to emails quickly, gave many chances on HW, and gave EC. But, the exams are very difficult and are worth 75% of grade. But, curved. There are 2 midterms and a final. The videos didn't help as it was mainly concept. The exams were mostly practical. The review was only partially helpful.
Professor Matthews is one of the best options for physics. It is a tough class and the material can be really challenging, but Professor Matthews gives practice exams that are very similar to the actual exams. There are 2 midterms and a final, each worth 25% of your grade. However, he curves every exam and does his best to help out his students.
As a person he is very nice and truly cares about his students; as a professor he lacks in teaching skills. His exams were extremely hard but he did HUGE curves after them. I recommend studying in class questions for exams instead of the practice exam. He makes the tests unnecessarily hard on purpose. If you want to learn, do not take him.
Really nice guy, willing to work with students. Would definitely recommend.
Hes very good and grades the exams very reasonably
Dr. Matthews is the sweetest professor I've ever taken! His lectures are so engaging & beneficial, and he communicates the information very well. He is also very lenient in grading, and I sincerely enjoyed taking this class with him. Although his exams were very difficult, he would curve to ensure we do good. Definitely try to take him if you can!
Professor Matthews made this class a lot harder than it needed to be. His in person "lectures" are just practice problems, most of which are so complex that it doesn't make any sense. He gives "Pre-lecture videos" to learn the material, which are monotone and boring. The tests are so insanely difficult that he has to curve them. What a joke.
This course runs on a flipped classroom model; lecture time is used for practice problems. Pre-lecture videos & 1-2 hour homeworks are assigned weekly. Dr. Matthews is very nice, although he proceeds through practice problems quite slowly. Furthermore, he generously curves exams.
Expected to learn off lecture videos and homework assignments from the online textbook which correlates very little to none to the actual problem that has to be done during the test. Three tests are worth 75% of your grade. You could study and understand the practice test and problems given and still easily fail the exams. No extra credit.
He is the best of the USF physics teachers. 25% of grade is HW, which you should able to do well on. 75% are made of 3 exams which are difficult and heavily curved. Used 3 different ways to calculate the final grade and gave you the grade that was the highest of the 3. Final was NOT cumulative. You could understand him when he spoke.
He has a flipped classroom, so you watch pre lecture videos and than do problems about them in class. If you go to class, you learn how to do the difficult problems. Exams are pretty easy but since a lot of other people fail, he curves it heavily. Three exams no cumulative. Do the practice exam, in class questions, and exam style questions.
I did not have any background in physics, but I studied very hard. I took this class in the Fall 2021, but it is still one of the worst classes I have taken.
Dr. Matthews is the best professor I have ever had. He truly wants what is best for you, cares about you, and listens to your feedback. I also think he did a great job teaching the subject. It is a flipped classroom style, so if you do not learn that way you will struggle, but I appreciated how we ran thru problems in class. He is a nice grader too
He is the best choice for physics. He posts practice exams which are very similar to the actual exams and runs a flipped classroom style which I did not like at first but as we went on I realized is a really great way to learn physics. His curves are so generous, my 77 on the first test turned into a 100.
He is a good person. I took him thinking I would be successful in understanding approaches to problems, not the case. I watched lec. vid., YT vid., did many practice problems. His class is test heavy 25% assignments (3,000+ points), and 75% exam grades(300pts). Recommend to calculate diff. variables in each practice prob. if you have no background.
I LOVED Dr. Matthews. He was so forgiving and would actually listen to the class if we needed/wanted extra time on an assignment. This is a hard course that takes consistent effort, but I liked his setup of the content. I definitely recommend taking Matthews for Physics 1, and wish he was teaching Physics II.
He cares so much for his students and you can really tell. Matthews often pushed back deadlines to help accommodate everyone and was really understanding. Course is heavily weighted towards three exams, including the final which was not cumulative. Do the practice test and exam-style questions way before the exams
I took him for PHY1&2: Professor Matthews is an angel on earth. He's so kind & does everything he can to help us succeed. I was apprehensive about taking Physics, but with Professor Matthews, there was nothing to fear. He has the patience of a saint, is happy to answer questions both in & out of class, & is an amazing instructor. 100/10!!
The most caring professor i have ever encountered he actually REQUESTS that you give feedback as to how he could help everyone learn better. Its physics so its not easy but he typically curves the exams alot. Listens to students when extra time is needed and is such a teddy bear. he makes me go "aweee" at least once per lecture. Will need to study.
He gives you everything you need to pass, but they can get confusing in his writings. He does a flipped classroom style, so do what you want with that information. I did very well just going through his practice tests IN DEPTH AND DETAIL.
literally the best professor you can get for physics. LOVE MATTHEWS! unfortunately doesn't teach physics 2 :((((
Professor Matthews is the best physics professor there is at USF. He cares so much about his students and gives lots of study resources to do well on the exams. He does a review right before the exam which often has the same types of questions that will be on the exam. Physics is not an easy subject but Matthews curves a lot and makes it bearable.
I loved this professor! His lectures were confusing because it was physics but he made sure to go in depth and thats what matters. For his exams, we had three and he made sure to curve each one so that the class average was a C. He also offered extra credit questions on the last exam. If you are taking physics he is definitely the one to take!
Super sweet and understanding guy, but I hated having a flipped classroom. His class structure is awful, and going to class is not necessary in my opinion (he does practice problems). Would recommend learning from the textbook/videos. Exams are super curved and similar to practice exam, so master that before the exam. An A is definitely attainable.
I simply do not understand physics at all and I managed to get an A in his class. He's super nice and his tests are insanely curved. The only downside is it's a flipped classroom so he doesn't really lecture in class rather he does practice problems but overall unless you don't try at all it's very hard to fail. I wish he taught physics 2.
This professor is the best. He moved our exam because we weren't ready. He is the best. Take him if you can!!
Dr. Matthews is a very caring professor and very helpful. He teaches a flipped classroom with mostly practice problems in class. Uses clicker points so attendance is mandatory. Very lenient with grading and wants his students to pass. Genuinely caring person and very nice.
Mr.Matthews was an ok professor, his lectures were confusing most of the time but he does the best to explain the material, a lot of homework definitely(not a lot of questions but takes long to solve). He gives practice finals which are pretty similar to the actual final.
Dr. Matthews is very kind. Almost too kind to the point that kids take advantage of how kind he is. His explanations are a little confusing and one could argue there are simpler ways to solve his problems. If you do his inclass questions and practice exams, you will be prepared for the real exams, which he HEAVILY curves. 3 question curve minimum.
Most caring professor ever, he really really doesn't want anyone to fail. Physics isn't easy, his lectures aren't the best, but practice the class questions, exam questions, and practice exam and you will be fine. He heavily curves, almost failed the class but got a B at the end. Take him!
Very passionate teacher. test questions are reviewed in class.
honestly overhyped and overrated prof. his lectures suck and he spends 20 minutes on one problem during class instead of going into detail on the actual concepts of the material. Exams have a small curve but your grade is literally based on 69% from 3 exams, 8% attendence, and 23% hw. he doesn't teach well and makes everything overcomplicated.
Dr.Matthews cares for his students a lot and is super friendly. In my opinion, his lectures were hard to follow, but I think physics, in general, can be a challenging subject.
Professor Matthews is super sweet and very caring. 8% attendance (iclicker check in), 23% assignments (multiple attempts on questions), 69% exams (3 exams, 23% each). Practice tests are very close to actual test. Not the best teacher - his explanations are kinda confusing, but he makes up for it with big curves. Learn from youtube!
Dr. Matthews is nice and considerate of students' time and needs. However, his lectures are NOT great. He is not good at explaining physics concepts. His lectures are too brief and often confusing. While he curves exams, I feel like he did not give us enough time to complete the questions. He is very kind, but he should improve his teaching style.
Matthews was the sweetest and kindest! His exams were almost identical to his practise exams and in-class questions. He made many videos to walk you through most of the hard questions on his homework. Just put in a bit of effort to memorise the components of the equations and concepts and you'll be fine! Would definitely take again!
He is a kind teacher. However, his teaching style wasn't for me, and the exam material was often really difficult. Many of the things he assigned or the materials he gave to help with the exam didn't really help me. The practice exams were excessively long and didn't focus on exam questions. The curves also weren't that helpful to me either.
Dr. Matthews was an amazing professor. His exams were straight to the point and he curved them a lot so you were able to get a certain amount incorrect. There are homework assignments for every module and there are clickers, however you just have to log in, the amount you get correct does not matter. I would recommend this professor for physics!
when I actually went to class, halfway through I began to hate God for giving me the legs that brought me there. lack of teaching skills, never answered emails, lectures were pointless to attend when he would spend 20 minutes on one single problem and have us solve them ourselves for half the class when nobody knew what they were even looking at,
Matthews is a nice person, but this class was horrible. It was a flipped classroom, so he would give us questions to figure out, and no one ever knew what was happening. I studied so much and did every practice problem multiple times, and I still only got a C. He is also very unorganized with makeup exams so avoid that. And doesn't answer emails.
Great class
Professor Matthews has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, you can do well. The practice tests are very close to the actual exams. unstuckstudy and YouTube were super helpful for study prep.
The material in this class is tough, but Dr.Matthews definelty makes it easier. There is a lot of practice problems to do, and the practice exam is very representative of the actual exam, as long as you understand what you're doing. Highly reccomend!
