great teacher, really enjoyed him

Mr. Johns tries really hard to be helpful, but he isn't always clear...
as long as some of homework done easy class, listens to students, explains well.
Very good professor. Explains everything in detail. Helps students understand the material by giving many examples.

He explains things really good, and very clear. I have him for 2 classes and ive never been bored, he has been then best math teacher here that I've had!
Excellent teacher, one of the best I've had. Very willing to help students at any time.
He is a good teacher, but his examples are not always clear.
he was not clear, tests were very different from class, u could follow along in class but come tests u have to ask if it was covered in the class...struggled all semester would not take him again
Awesome math teacher!! He is very clear and cares about students learning the math. The tests are thorough and fair. He is not a push over but if you do the homework you will do well.
He puts the tricky questions on his tests and does not give enough points for your work. Grades alright because does give a few extra work to fix your grades. He is much better than most math teachers.
he's the best math teacher i've had so far here at svsu, very clear, explains things very well, answers any questions you have in class or on the side, takes extra time for his students. never really had to do the homework, easy quizzes, gives points for work.
Dr.Johns was the best math teacher I have had at svsu. I would highly recommend him. He was always willing to assist students. Lectures and examples were easy to follow. I am not a math person and I really enjoyed his class.
Great teacher!! Learned a lot from him. He was able to explain tricky theory so even I could understand him. A++++
very good guy... willing to help all the time and willing to go over any questions... would recommend for any math class he teaches
Very kind and helpful. I occassionally was confused on the quizzes, but if you do the suggested homework you should do great!
Great math teacher.. probably one of the best at SVSU... always willing to help and very easy-going... take him if you can
Makes elementary math very hard. Tests are nothing like the examples in class. Flies through the material. I did not like him. Always brags about his kids and how they are so smart and their home schooled. Typical math prof here at svsu
I feel that Johns is a very good math prof. a very rare breed indeed
This guy is very helpful, do your work and study and you'll be fine! Proofs can be confusing, but work through them the best you can for partial credit!
Great professor! Best math prof I've had, and I MEAN IT! He is willing to help, and presents material very clearly. Gives extra credit for doing homework towards quizes, gives ex. cr. on exams. Take him!
As others have said, he's the best. Not only is he very helpful, he goes out of his way to make sure each student understands the material.
He is a very good professor and is willing to give each student individual attention. He's thorough, intelligent, and does a great job teaching algebra.
Very enthusiastic about teaching. Mixes lectures with activities and explains things thoroughly. He moves a bit fast, but it may have been the 2 snowdays we had. I think secondary education students should take MATH 110 too, it's soo helpful.
He made an easy job, complicated. Easy ideas were made complicated. If you asked for help, he was more than willing to help, but rarely wanted to use classtime to clarify things that most people were confused on. Nice man, but tough.
horrible, horrible, horrible....Since when does elementary math become so hard? Tests are horrible, he is a jerk and makes you feel stupid. Flies through material and expects you to know it all. DO not take him, horrible
Ignore any negative ratings of this teacher. Anyone who didn't like this guy wasn't willing to work hard. It's NOT an easy class, because it's not about regurgitating facts. It's about understanding the math you've learned, so you can teach it!!
He is the best in the business. No contest.
Professor Johns is awesome. yeah, there were times when the material was a little bit confusing, but he clarified it if needed. Out of all the math110 profs, I would recommend Johns. Hard but good! :)
One of the best profs I've had so far. Willing to help outside of class. Funny guy at times. Tough but fair. Good methods. Do the homework. I definitely recommend him.
Goes very fast, but will repeat anything and explain everything. Tests are tricky and he grades hard, so don't expect an A unless you are a wizard already.
Seems like a good teacher until you take his tests. They are very hard and it is hard to study for them. I was very unhappy with this class and the instructor.
Great professor! He is always willing to help out, you just have to ask! He offers lots of office time, and lots of time in class for questions. Does move fast paced, but if you ask him to recover something he will. I strongly! recommend him!! By far the best math prof I have had at SVSU.
Johns = awesome math prof! Ive had 4 math classes w/other profs - Johns tops 'em all. Explains everything in detail, answers questions, partial credit if attempt on tests. Study all notes & do the hw, and it's not that bad. I DEFINITELY would take Johns again over any other math prof @ SVSU!
Do not talke this class. The tests are awful, class average was 54% and he would not curve. The hwk problems or examples he does barely show up on exams and quizzes. He is a very nice man though.
Class is easy. Tests are fairly simple at first, but he gradually starts to trick you into the semester. Quizzes are usually harder than tests. Cumulative final exam. Best math teacher I have had--nice, funny, takes time to help you, easy A/B if you try.
Dr. Johns wants his students to do well, his quizzes are simple, but there are several, some of his tests can be tricky. Best advice I can give you is TAKE HIM and do the optional homework. He gives extra credit on every test and most quizzes.
I thought he was a good teacher, I asked many questions and he was quick to answer and explain why he got an answer. The class was interesting and was enjoyable to learn.
pretty clear in lectures and examples. very helpful if went to office hours. gave 40 points extra credit. drops lowest two quizes. pretty easy if do the homework and understand the concepts. i would take again if i could
Great teacher. Offers e.c. on all tests and most of the quizzes. Always willing to help, and if you argue a grade he will usually reason with you and change it.
He was very interested in making sure that the students learned the material. The homework was helpful. He made the class meaningful and I learned alot.
Put all of your efforts into this class and you will not fail.
Homework does not relate to tests or quizzes.
He is very kind and makes sure the students know everything they can possibly know. Great teacher.
One of the top 2 instructors I've had, and I've had a lot. Memorably concerned for his students. A "10" when it comes to being genuine. Teaches for the students' best success. A very helpful and clear teacher. He goes above and beyond the call of duty! Take him!
I had him a long time ago, but I still get help for TE 331 "Methods of Teaching Mathematics." He's a great prefessor - VERY helpful. He wants you to succeed, and his teaching reflects that. If you don't understand a concept, he will try to explain it another way. I cannot say enough good things about him. I would recommend him to anyone.
awesome teacher
Wow, I was just wanted to pass this class because I knew it was going to be hard. But, thanks to Dr. Johns I not only passed I got an A. There was a lot of work, but that was expected for this level class. I would recommend Dr. Johns to anyone. Perhaps the best math teacher I have had, thus far.
Good teacher!! Really interested in if you learn the material. Explains everything thoroughly so you know what he's talking about. I recommend him!
AWESOME TEACHER!!! He made the class so easy and he made sure everyone understood. gave great examples that helped you learn the material. I would recommend him to anyone.
He is clear in his lectures but his quizzes and tests have trick questions on them and he even admits it. If you do your homework and ask questions in class about stuff you didn't understand you should do fine.
Outstanding professor!! Makes the most complex concept seem easy. But be ready to work.
how come no one talks about diff eq on here?
Hands Down The Best Math Teacher I have Ever Had.
Awesome prof. Tests are pretty much based off homework and things he talked about in class. Always had time in class to ask for help if you needed it. Would highly recommend!!!!
This is a class where I worked extremely hard but was greatly rewarded in the end. Johns is very willing to help anyone who asks for it. This is not an easy class at all but it taught me real-world applications, study skills and the importance of asking for help.
Listen and complete the homework. If you have questions, attend office hours. Can't make it? No problem. He is very accommodating. Expectations are high. One of the best at SVSU. Those who dis SVSU math dept have not taken math classes at MSU.
Don't be afraid to ask for help. Johns is the best at SVSU. He will do whatever it takes to help you! This class is extremely difficult and I am terrible at math but Johns is understanding and patient.
typical SVSU math professor. AWEFUL. Lectures are hard to learn from because he moves to fast. You can go to his office hours but you should be able to take SOMETHING away from time in class but dont.Quizes are hard and exams are even harder.Thinks he should be like a board of education member or something but his teaching skills suck TAKE D.SCHALL!
Not impressed with his teaching. Most of the time I felt as though I could have read the book and learned just as much. Exams are difficult with weird wordings and he assigns homework problems for each section but will only grade you on one of them so you only get about 2 points for 10 problems. Not a fan of this teacher I wouldn't take him again!
One of the better math profs at SVSU. Grades and tries to give you as many points as possible on tests, unlike many of the SV math profs i've experienced. Office help is great too, explains things very well in class and in office hours.
I though that Professor Johns was a great teacher. He used interesting examples (at least as interesting as statistics can get) and was actually really funny. There were chances for extra credit and there were also extra points on the test. Homework was not mandatory, but was helpful. Overall, he was a great professor! Would take him again.
I feel like Professor Johns could be a really good teacher, I just don't understand his lectures. He draws conclusions without explaining them and often uses the same the variable for different things. Sometimes I think that I understand, but then I get the quiz and I have no idea where to even start. Definitely do all the homework + ask for help.
Although his tests were hard, if you go to every class, he teaches the material
Great math teacher! I wish I could take him again for my next class. He's very clear, but his tests can be wicked hard. Study like a beast and you might be okay, it is possible to come out with a good grade. He's also very helpful and will answer all of your questions.
I thought Professor Johns was a very good professor. I have never liked math, and I was kind of intimidated going into this class because so many people say it is so difficult. If you do the homework and ask questions, you will do just fine!
Do all the homework! But then again it didn't really help. He doesn't explain how he got the answer. He also mixes sections and chapter around in the middle of class. He doesn't teach math, he writes it all down then moves on.
As far as helpfulness and being approachable Johns is second to no other math instructor Ive had before. I'm not sure my grade yet but I did very well considering it was summer and was taking 8 credits. The people who struggled tended to have a lower math level, although algebra might get you in something higher will help very much. Great Prof.
This is the third class that I have taken with Johns and he is by far one of my favorite teachers at SVSU. Yes you do have to actually try and do the work but if you do, you will do well. He is extremely helpful when you speak up and ask questions.
Mr. Johns is a very nice teacher and explains things well. He allows you to have a page that you can make up for the last test & final. Good math teacher BUT this class is still challenging so don't expect it too be a breeze.
If you're like me, I completely suck at math. I took his hybrid class and he was always there for me. The textbook in included in the online course and it is easy to follow. He's very kind and his class made me realize that I do math better online than I do in lecture. He's a great man. Take him.
not helpful at all. He is the worst professor I have ever seen. He is not explained materials well, he said that the quiz will be based on suggested homework and mystatlab which is the mandatory online HW, then nothing comes from them. He makes tricky questions
This is the most difficult class i had ever, he does jot helpful , i told him i am international but he does not care i did not recommend anyone to talk class with him
First test i took i got the worst grade ive ever gotten on a test, he gave 10 points of rework but it didnt bump me up enought to keep my 4.0 gpa. The professor will not give any hints as to what to actually expect on the test but the key is to do most every problem in every section of the book and Study hard. Take somone better if possible
If you've taken a high school calc class before and done well, you'll be fine in Prof John's class. Otherwise, avoid it. His lectures are unnecessarily fast bc he ends class a half hour early to check hw. He often forgets to teach sections that are in the hw, and tests aren't like hw so studying is tough. Very nice guy, but the class is DIFFICULT.
Youll think hes a good proffessor til you take his exams.
I took Professor Johns online and the videos to watch are terribly boring and annoying. Also you have timed quizzes and its usually about 15 questions for half an hour. His exams are fairly long too.
By far the hardest class I've ever taken. He went over the material really fast in class. However, he does answer homework problems and explain things more thoroughly if you ask. Test and quizzes are fairly difficult, so be sure to study and go to tutoring. He's a super nice guy and gave extra credit, but you have to work for it. Good luck!
The way he grades quizzes/HW is on a 5 point scale so if you do them you will get a 5/5 for getting above an 80%. He lets you use a "cheat sheet" on the tests. Though he is a good teacher the class is not easy.
He does tend to go through material fast. However, if you care about your grade and care to take the time to ask him, he will go through the material slower and make sure you understand. He is very helpful if you have questions. I will take him again if I am given the chance.
I would say that Johns was the best professor I've had at SVSU, but the way he weighted assignments was ridiculous. Granted I took his spring class, but the final was worth 52% of our grade and was mostly based on the last two chapters. I had an A after the first 2 exams and walked out of the final with a B-.
The entire class is graded on 3 tests. If the entire class has a D average on a test he does not care. The homework is optional as he will not give you feedback during class time. If you ask him for help he will tell you that you're out of luck. The material is not hard but he is extremely particular and will take off points for every little thing.
Great professor, super nice and friendly and he wants you to succeed. He is a great teacher and the class isn't too hard. He is good at teaching and explaining things so that you can understand. The book is used for homework, which isn't collected, but will help you better understand, can also use a note sheet on quizzes/exams. 10/10 recommend.
Prof. Johns has been the best ( and last) math prof. I've had here. He genuinely wants you to pass and is willing to stay after class to help you. Although he won't let us use calculators on the exam, he will let you leave it as a simplified equation. If you have to take Biostats, he's the best. You do have to put in a little effort for the grade!
He is a very very caring man who will help you with anything. However, his class is super fast paced and skips around a lot. I am an A student and struggled in this class. The class was only based on 180 points with 2 exams and a final project. Online homework every week worth 10 pts. 4 online quizzes that are impossible. 67% on quiz was high.
Dr. Johns was my math professor and it was an online course, the videos he provided helped me well but the quizzes were easy but often times the material was not based on the hw.
He moves very fast and does not answer questions during class time. His homework and quizzes are not written by him and are often unfair due to high numbers to calculate several equations and only 30 minutes to do so. However, you can fail your quizzes and exams and still pass as long as you do all of the homework.
STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. He is absolutely horrible. He doesnt teach, he gives you a chapter, a homework sheet worth 5 points and thats it most weeks. A few modules he has good videos, the rest are just a video of a question in the book the ENTIRE TIME and him reading the question. He doesnt teach, wont answer questions unless you join the zoom
Avoid taking this professor at all costs! I've never struggled in math before and had to drop the class in order to keep my scholarships and gpa. Only graded on tests and quizzes and if you don't understand something, you can't look it up on YouTube bc he teaches it in his 'own way'. take stats at delta for credit, all my other grades were perfect
I failed AP Stats my senior year but I passed his class with an A. Though the only things you are graded on is quizzes and tests he offers extra credit on those. He teaches us like we are dumb which I really enjoy because he goes slow. He gives a lot of half credit on things too which is good. If you dont go to class you will prob do bad.
This was easily the hardest class I have ever taken. He is a great professor, he just covers a lot of material really fast. He only grades quizzes and tests and there was no homework to buffer the grade. Barely passed but I honestly learned so much.
Easily one of the best math professors here. He teaches using examples and does an amazing job explaining complicated topics clearly. He is incredible respectful towards students and is happy to answer questions. His classes are difficult, but worth it.
While you do not get points for going to class you have to go to class to pass. Quiz once a week that can not be made up. He does not allow calculators on tests and is honestly horrible at teaching. He doesn't teach he just goes through problems he's already memorized.
Dr. Johns class was challenging, but definitely doable. I ended with a B in canvas and he gave me an A to the registrar. He sees the effort you put in and wants you to succeed as a student if you put in the effort. Go to class and do all the homework and you will do well. Best math professor at SVSU.
He is an awesome professor who cares! He gives you all the resources to pass with an A. Exams were worth majority of the points in the class but he prepares you very well for them, especially if you do the practice problems he gives you. Take him!!!
No graphing calculators allowed, doesn't give you many formulas on tests/quizzes, and expects you to memorize a lot.
Garry is a very nice man but tends to forget that we are 18-20 year old's who are not math majors. The book is very hard to read and understand and it is often harder to figure out what the book is saying than the actual problem itself. He doesn't allow calculators on tests which is not a huge deal because he makes the tests have easier numbers.
