he was the best...very interesting and very caring
A bit of a rambler, but entertaining. Actually cares what his students do.
Very funny. Take his class if you get a chance
awesome teacher---interesting seminars!!!!
Teaches in a stand-up comedy format. Always funny and actually teaches good.
He does ramble! I enjoy his lectures and learn a lot.
AWESOME!!! Will take more classes with him!
Garry is a helluva prof and looks like Connan O'Brian to boot
Garry rocks!
Great @ Lectures, Marks like a dictator though!
Interesting, helpful, variety of viewpoints, good literature.
AWESOME!! Take his class if you get the chance!
FABULOUS! rambles a little, but hella smart. I'll take ENG 110 w/ him
Garry teaches like he is doing a stand-up comedy routine. He marks pretty tough
Easily one of the best profs I have had so far.
If you like your sex talk, take this class... Beware though, he marks tough.
He jumps around in class trying to make things more clear which doesn't always work. Very helpful if you having problems though. Wonderful person. Keep all of the view points seperate but see their connectedness, Gary can blur those lines unintentionally.

I could spend my whole time in university just taking classes from Garry. He loves class interaction, and accepts ever persons point of view. His papers and tests are challanging, but definately worth the effort. Ask about the rope story, it's great.
I would take classes from him every semester if I could. He really communicates with his students, and always willing to help. He is funny, and gets the information across of what he is teaching.
Very good prof. He is smart, willing to help, and makes things easy to understand. I hated english untill I had Garry!!
THE best prof I have ever had. I loved English to begin with, but he made me want to change my major! He marks hard, though, and you can't be prudish in his class! If you can, get in his class!!!
Garry is a great prof! Sometimes the subject matter is tough but he's always willing to help you out and accept different points of view! Visiting him when you're writing essays is really helpful, he's always patient and willing to talk things through o
I think he's one of those people who know that they look like someone famous and they subconciously begin to act like them, but if you were to ever confront him with the fact he'd say, "Do I really look like Conan O'Brien? Wow, I hadn't realized!
I don't have anything against him, but I'm not always sure he knows what he's talking about. Yeah, he's entertaining, but so what? His jokes are jeuvenile and he's too friendly with the females.
Garry is awesome and will go out of his way to make time to help you. His enthusiasm shows in his teaching. My only complaint is that he sometimes contradicts himself...
Garry is a very enthusiastic prof. I learned lots in his class, too bad none of it was about English.
I agree he is the best prof in the Engl. dept. as well as one of the U of R's! In regards to: His jokes are jeuvenile and he's too friendly with the females. SOMEBODY JUST DIDN'T GET THE JOKES AND I AM BETTING IT IS A GUY!!! Garry was great, I learned a lot and he is very dynamic!
Yes, Garry is entertaining. Yes, Garry is comical, and yes, Garry is also convoluted and somewhat ostentatious. You have to sift through lectures to extract the small amount of relevant material. He needs more focus and less bravado.I like Garry but I find his lectures vague and frustrating.
He's entertaining, but I expect more from a prof. If he could once in a while get to the point we might learn more. I agree with the person who said he's a bit too friendly with female students.
Garry is terrific at getting the class interested in an otherwise mundane subject matter. His modern day illustrations make the subject matter clear and he encourages class discussion. THE BEST English prof I have EVER had (and I have had a lot).
Strange. He slapped himself in the face, rapped himself on the head with his knuckles, ran around the room pretending that he was knocking people down in the woods. Not reccommeded for fans of the Bush administration (including Condoleeza).
This dude was definately cool. I couldn't help but notice he looked a lot like Conan O'Brien (am I right or am i right?) Best english prof I've ever had, and I would definately take another class from him. He swears, he dances, he's not afraid of stating his opinion, and if a student disagrees, he allows them to explain themselves. Groovy Person!
I loved the material he chose for the course. He was realy helpful with questions about our essays. He was very funny, but kept the jokes relevent to the topic. I do agree that he looks like Conan.
He is one of the most intellectually stimulating profs at the U of R. Highly recommended - but not an easy grade (you'll have to work for it). Take his course if you want to mentally challenge yourself.
He is funny. Typical mad prof. You will love his class if you love his material and his school of thought. If not, prepare for a nonsense class. hard marker. But he does load you with stimulating stuff. worths the try. regardless of the marking, enjoyable class.
Garry rocks! If you can, take a class from him! He knows his material very well, and will mentally challenge you! If you can, bring a tape recorder to class to tape his sessions. Sometimes he goes a little too fast to catch on to everything. He's very helpful. If you need help on your essays, he'll be more than happy to assist! Awesome prof!
Garry's class was by far the most enjoyable English class I've taken yet. He's very animated and you can tell he loves what he does. He's always willing to help with papers, and just chat about the course material. He's genuinely interested in his students' success.
Enjoys hearing himself talk too much, and says in 30 minutes what could be said in 3. Yes, he's very smart -- but he only thinks you are if you read his mind. Insanely hard grader. You will learn something, but it's not worth fighting for a decent grade. Claims to be there for advice, but really only just wants to talk more. Avoid at all costs.
He makes class discussions interesting, and is very clear about what he is looking for in essays.
This professor is fantastic! If you ever want to get more than just a "grade" out of a class he is the man. I have never learnt so much about everything in 3 months. Full of engery and spirit and loves his job I tell ya
Really good prof. What he has to say is interesting and is useful in everyday life. I don't think he is a hard grader like everyone says. It is the right amount of challenge. You will not get bored in this class because Garry is very outgoing and fun/funny. I wish he was teaching the next level up, shucks. If you do not take him it's your loss.
Super awesome prof! Makes the topics that are most vague the easiest to understand, puts them in every day terms and makes them like second nature to your thinking. He is hilarious, keeps the class interested and isn't afraid to say what he is thinking. Wish I would have known him prior to my last year taking his class, I would have taken every cla
Garry is the best prof I've had so far! His classes are highly entertaining! Very charismatic and fantastic sense of humour. Makes Shakespeare a breeze! Metaphors and symbolism are crystal clear and essays are easy to write. He encourages students to bring essays to him to read before handing in. Can't wait for next semester's class!!
Again, Garry took what could have been very difficult material and made it crystal clear. He is a phenomenal prof. Very entertaining, passionate, and cares about the success of his students. He likes a lot of detail in his essays. Go to class, take notes, read the material to do well. STRONGLY recommend this prof!
Again, Garry didn't disappoint. He took what is typically a difficult class and made it bearable. As always, he was entertaining and informative. Go to class, take notes, and read the texts to do well. It helps to know Hamlet, too. Highly recommended.
Professor Sherbert is, by far, one of the best English profs on campus. He is so full of knowledge and willing to help. Highly highly recommended.
Gary is a Gem within the English department. His energy, humor, and lack of demure, makes the courses so much fun and memorable. I have never learned so much and remembered everything until I had Gary. He engages students into conversation and takes an interdisciplinary approach to most subjects. Please do yourself a favor and take a class with him
Gary is an amazing professor. He is kind, funny, entertaining, and knowledgeable. It can be difficult to take notes at times, as the lectures don't follow a very rigid structure. However, when reviewing the whole of the notes, for some reason, some coherence is there. I would take another course from Gary.
Garry is probably one of the best professors I have had the fortune to have at the University of Regina. He is extremely knowledgable, stimulates thought provoking discussions, and is HILARIOUS and thoroughly entertaining. Furthermore, he genuinely cares about his students and will encourage them to do the best they can. Garry rules.
Un believable prof. I have taken all the classes that Garry has offered and wish I could have taken more. Best prof in the university by far. No one else in the faculty even comes close. Purnis, Melhoff or Baumann can't hold a candle to Garry. You don't even need to read the course subject he is so knowledgeable. Show up to class is all you need.
Hands Down the best Prof I have ever had. He is a hard marker but he is also willing to give you a couple extra days if you need it. Strange prof but he makes English a breeze.
Definitely one of the best profs I've had at the university. He is pretty clear with his assignments and exams. He is always willing to meet with you if you need help. He marks kind of hard but he is fair. He is also really really entertaining. Id take every class I could with him. Really really great prof! He made Shakespeare enjoyable.
Garry makes Shakespeare easy to understand and is very thorough with his lectures. Garry is interesting and hilarious - would definitely recommend him!
Where do I begin... Garry is by far the most approachable English professor at the UofR. He's clever, entertaining and charming. He does make you work hard for a grade of 80 percent or higher, but his classes are well worth signing up for. He is well versed in the subject matter he teaches. Take a course with him. I promise you will not regret it!
Garry is always an absolute pleasure. Sometimes he uses language that a student might find offensive, but at the forefront, he is a feminist and really respects everyone. He's willing to read your entire essay before you hand it in so that you can adjust it accordingly.
There is nobody like him! He's amazing! His Literary Theory class changed my views of the world and outlook of life.
He is a quirky, brilliant man who is always willing to help and will have you laughing your pants off during lectures. He is very good at explaining difficult concepts, like various literary theories. He will make you earn your grade and attendance is a must to pass.
If you want to know the meaning of life take his ENGL399 Literary Theory class or any of his classes. It doesn't matter which faculty you are in. Everyone can learn from Garry. I highly recommend his Shakespeare and his Literary Theory classes they'll change the way you see things. If you visit him during his office hours or after class he'll help.
As much as I think he's a nice guy, I found he often repeated the same stories and material in class. He is a pretty relaxed professors in terms of grading and deadlines, but the actual content of the class was boring.
This man is brilliant. What I learned in his class has helped shape my entire academic career and he was a significant feminist role model for me. Five years later, at the end of my Masters program, I am still pulling out and integrating pieces from his lectures. Look elsewhere for an easy "A", but real academics will get their money's worth here.
Garry is awesome. He can make you feel a little uncomfortable by what he has to say, but he sure knows how to get his message across. I laugh every class and he remembers his students. He has no trouble having a conversation about life if you meet him in the halls. 10 out of 10, would take a class from him again.
Took his 110 class on Menippean satire. Wild lectures, really hammers out what he thinks are important points, so you can't just read the book, you have to listen to what he says. However, if you do that, you're golden.
He was an amazing guy but was unorganized in timing the required readings for our class. We weren't able to get through all of them, and still put questions on the exam afterward. If you are a good listener, you will pass his class no problem. If you are not, then reconsider taking a lecture from him until you've practiced your note-taking skills.
Garry was an absolute gem. He really knows what he is talking about, however this can often lead to straying a bit off topic, and in our case this put our class way behind schedule and a lot had to be cut out. That being said Garry will entertain in every class and you will come away having learned a lot, highly recommend
Garry is such a great professor! You can tell he really cares about his students and their grades. He does go off topic quite easily however everything you do learn is very useful in everyday life. I don't recommend missing class, he goes into significant detail about each text you read, its very helpful. He made English 100 a breeze!
Garry is an amazing prof. I struggled with my first class so retook English 100. Garry made for a class that you could look forward too. I don't like English nor is it my strong suit but he really made sure I knew what I was doing. Hw would get excited when you would ask him for help. I would take any class again with him in a heartbeat! best prof
Very funny guy. He makes lectures interesting and is genuinely passionate about the subject. He can get pretty off topic and go on tangents and it takes him awhile to finish things, but he makes the class fun and gets you invested in the readings. Can be a bit crude but personally I found that it made the class a bit more fun. Would take him again
He was a lot of fun to listen too but can get off topic quite easily. His classes were fun to attend and mandatory! He pretty much told you exactly what he expected for each essay. He really cared which was awesome to see. You will need the textbook!
Garry is the best prof ever! I am not much of an English person, but he made me look forward to attending his class due to his hilarious and caring personality. There are some grammar pop quizzes here and there but for essays, he will give you a lot of info on the topic so the essays are not that hard to write. I would recommend Garry to everyone!
Garry is an amazing prof. I truly enjoyed his class and would definitely take a class from him again. He truly cares about his students and work to makes sure they understand and is very helpful out of class. He often drops heavy hints as to what he is looking for on tests. Garry is very knowledgeable and a pleasure to be in his class.
Easily one of the best profs I have ever had. His classes are engaging and he is always understanding about missing class and does not hold it against you as a student. He really cares about his students and their success. I only took one class with him and even when I wasn't his student he was willing to help me with my personal statement for law.
He's one of those rare professors that makes you wanna come to his class on purpose, the dude can lead an army with speeches, I aspire to be like him one day. Just put in the work and you will pass. Just appreciate him.
Garry is not good. His expectations are not realistic, and very vague. Even though he is entertaining DO NOT take this class if you do not enjoy talking about sex or religion (mainly female parts). That is all his lectures and texts are about. (If you are catholic you will enjoy the religious aspects of this class.)
Jumps around the texts a lot so it is difficult to follow. Expected to read a large amount of content in such a short period of time. Classes were very rushed.
Garry is a great professor, who marks fairly. There were 4 essays and a final. Besides the essays, there really isn't any homework. The take-home essays had a word count of around 1000. I enjoyed his class, and I usually dislike english classes.
Hell likely easily go down as my favourite professor. He is hilarious, clearly cares about his students and gives clear, articulated feedback to help you with further essays. There were no assignments in his class, only essays (750-1000 words). He really inspires you to look deeper into understanding literature. The dude is legendary.
Listen to me when I say this, close your eyes and take this dude's class. He is easily in my list of TOP 5 best profs I have ever taken a class with. He gave us like 5 essays, which included a midterm and a final. So, basically you just gotta show up to his class and boom you pass. His lectures are amazing tbh. His interaction with students- 10/10
Garry stands as one of my favourite professors Ive ever had. He is funny, entertaining, and very informative. He basically tells you exactly what he expects for assignments. I dont struggle with English, but if you do, he is very easy to get ahold of for information or questions. Highly recommend!
Professor Sherbert is a sweet and funny old man. His grammar can be tough but he was awesome. I highly recommend taking his class. The way he teaches literature is to look at it sexually and continually yelled at cat. Best English prof, easy grade!
very nice person and focus on lecture
10/10 if you have adhd because there is never a dull moment. took 3 classes with him total, regret nothing. super funny guy, but really does care about his students. expectations are very, very clear which makes passing easy. assignment and exam guidelines are reasonable and easily accomplished. rip cinnamon the cat, garry hated you.
Garry is the best prof I've had so far. He is extremely engaging and super funny. The class has 4 essays and he gives lots of feedback on them. I loved going to this class and it made me actually like English. Definitely recommend taking his class.
He is honestly one of the best professors. He is engaging and makes the class enjoyable. He gives amazing feedback and answers any questions you have.
Garry is my spirit animal, if you are sensitive don't take the class though, but he's so lit. 10/10 love Gare Bear
Gary was such a good prof. I was nervous about taking English 100 after high school and felt I was not prepared to take university English. Gary's class was awesome. He was very entertaining, made you want to come to class, and really cares about his students. His English 100 class is also based around feminist literature which was really cool
Garry has been my favourite professor so far at the university. He is very engaging and entertaining, very funny, and one of the few professors I have had who actually makes you want to come to his class. If you get the chance to take him for any English classes, definitely consider it!
Garry is very funny! He really cares about you and will help you to succeed in his classes. attendance will help you a lot with the two assignments, midterm, and finals.
After taking his class I realized how fun literature is cuz I was actually understanding the concepts. If you can take his class don't pass on the opportunity. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to do well in exams come to class.
