was a really easy class. one annoying thing was if you dont do the homework you fail. you do ithe hw and do well on test easy A.
Tons of homework, even when there was a Midterm. Lots of use of the online MathLab. Made discussions board questions mandatory each week. I thought this was a useless requirement since most waited until a few answered the problem, then just repeated what they said. I have this in other classes, but for Math I think it is ineffective.

Probably the worst teacher I've had at Chemeketa. He didn't explain topics very well and wasn't helpful. Expected us to know all of the information he was giving us.
Although he doesn't have time to break it all down, he has office hours & always expresses willingness to help when needed. Students don't take advantage of his lectures by audio recording & notes. He allows test corrections to earn back points missed, has take-home quizzes, & presents a pleasant attitude for learning. He's a lot better than most!
Garth expected you to have a great understanding of math while giving notes. If you didn't understand, he wasn't clear when explaining. When he asked questions, I was the only person willing to answer so he would tell me to stop answering. As stated, redo on tests allowed for 1/2 credit on missed points. Final was easier than quizzes and tests.
If you don't read the book you will not learn from this class. He is a horrible instructor. I always liked him in the tutoring center, but does not have what it takes to teach full time!!!!
Hands down worst math teacher i've ever had. He does not teach the subjects thoroughly. I would suggest going to the tutoring center to get another persons perspective on the subject, they will most likely teach it more clearly.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. I took math 111 passed with an easy A and that's only because I get algebra I could see how if you weren't good at math if would be a struggle. Took math 112 and everything that was taught was not thorough. He answered questions incorrectly in lectures so I dropped and will find a better teacher.
I went into this class with high hopes and came out completely bummed out. Earned my A for the class, but mainly a product of my own work and help from the tutoring center. I was very disappointed to find that it was nearly impossible to get anytime with the intsructor outside of class hours when I needed clarification. He expresses willingness to help yet doesn't seem to want to when you approach him. Many mixed signals which made the class very intimidating.
Garth was an excellent instructor. I truly would take all of my calculus courses from him if I could. His explanations were clear and concise. He expects people to be able to do algebra, so those that struggle with algebra think he is unfair. He generally does not spend much time explaining algebra. Don't miss out on a great instructor!
As a tutor he helped me out, unfortunatley his teaching ability is awful. I have tried to take him twice. He assigns work that has nothing to do with the lesson and gets frustrated easily. I have even worked with him in the past so I thought he would be more helpful. Do not take him for any course! You will only learn if you follow the book!
Great instructor, I learned a lot. I especially liked that he was always available during office hours for extra questions (because I had plenty). He provides notes for every lecture which makes it easy follow what is happening.

This guy was alright, was always willing to help people who needed it, but didn't answer people's inane questions that they only had because they didn't do the homework or something and even then he only wouldn't answer them during lecture. Won't let you use a CAS calculator.
I think this guy gets a bad rap. The homework he assigns isnt counted, so its on you to do it and ask him questions the next day. He doesnt like nonsense in his class but if you want to learn the material hes a good choice. Hes also very helpful and will answer questions in and out of class if you have them
It was difficult for me to follow Professor Fleming during his lectures. He went through the exercises really quickly. He was rude during class but pretty nice outside of the classroom. I was not comfortable asking questions. He gave quizzes before we were ready. I don't recommend him! I struggled to get my A, and math is my best subject.
Worst math teacher i've ever had, he was extremely hot headed and didn't explain the concepts in detail and got angry if someone asked too many questions. He was hard to follow because he did everything on the projector and didn't clearly explain what he did. A really bad experience, i will tell everyone i know from now on to not take it with him.
Had online, decent, kinda nit picky, took off points because instead of putting 0.5 i put .5 not easy class not hard... its would. If you a little baby then dont take him, kind of a stickler
He was the worst math teacher I have ever had! I usually can understand math pretty easily, but his style of teaching is very difficult to learn by. When he is explaining a concept on the board he will skip some steps because he can do them in his head, but we hadn't learned it yet or just barely did. I practically had to teach myself with the book
He is very argumentive, ignores your emails when you have questions or need help. Avoid professor at all cost.
His "take-home quizzes" may be the best thing about his online trig class. Yes, he requires you to print out a quiz he has generated, answer the questions by hand while showing work, and then scan it back and attach it to an email. He offers help often and is quick to respond to emails. Extra credit questions on the final!!!
I spent a lot of time outside of his class studying because of his teaching method. He has high expectations of his students and expects you to remember everything from previous math classes. In lectures he will sometimes skip steps. Be part of a study group to help get through! He is a kind person but sometimes gets easily frustrated in class
Our midterm covered weeks 1-4 and he didn't bother to release week 4's material until the day before the test. He litters his written communication with condescending remarks. Never answered a single HW-related email I sent. Says he is available 24-7 but didn't bother to tell me there was a problem with my quiz til after the deadline. Why teach?
I took MTH211 and am currently in MTH212 because they are both required courses for my degree. The class itself is fairly easy especially if you remember material from elementary/middle school math. However, don't expect to get much if any help from Garth and prepare to go back later and teach yourself the material
Took online trig and I don't think I heard from him more than three times that term, and it was only when I reached out and not even every time I did. Most of the learning was from the book and the tests were so hard. I ended up having to retake the class and math is not my strong suite :(
If you are a self leaner go for it, if not FIND ANOTHER INSTRUCTOR!!!!!!
Good luck! If you know everything about Trig already and don't need a teacher... Garth is for you! But if you want a teacher who cares what so ever about actually teaching. Save your money, time, and frustrations for someone else. I got straight A's until I decided to waste my time taking a class from this guy! Do yourself a favor, dont take him
The only reason I passed this class was because I took trig in high school. I knew every topic he went over but somehow confused me rather than taught me. He cuts corners a lot when explaining formulas and by the end of class no one knows what he's talking about. He has his good moments though! Only take if you can learn without a teacher!

Mr. Garth Fleming's weekly assignments were self-explanatory. Read the chapters in the book, then answer problems online. He made himself available to help and joined a tutoring group students set up. My only warning is that tests are worth a big portion of one's grade, so study up! Skip problems you don't know because the test cannot be retaken.
Be prepared to teach yourself. Out of four online math courses this has been by far the worst. Instructor offers no instruction, aside from notes to review for each section. The instructor is available to offer help on campus most Saturdays... On Campus? Really? Must have forgotten that this is an online course.
I'd advise taking online only if you've been exposed to most of the material already but just don't remember how to do it. He's very nice and helpful and even made videos to help along the way. Would recommend if you are ready to do most of the work on your own
I took a MTWF class so I only saw him for less than an hour per day. He would rush through all the information and a lot of it would not even show up on the homework. Starts the next section before even taking the pervious test which can get confusing. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the information. Gets irritated easily with questions.
I was my own downfall when it came to this class with Garth, bad study habits. However, he isn't the best teacher but was forced to take it from him as it was the only option. Flies through material in class, none of which really relate to the homework. Gets upset with questions and just expects you to know everything, thank god for the xyz videos.
I hated his class. I've never struggled with school before this. He doesn't take the time to explain anything, and consistently makes mistakes while giving examples. He talks down to students who ask questions and was, overall, the worst teacher I've ever had.
His classes are a waste of time. He constantly jumps through content without explaining give excessive amounts of homework on content he does not teach. Constantly making mistakes in equations when he does explain the little he does. Would NOT recommend. Do not take his class unless you are willing to teach yourself and use the book to learn.
He's a really nice guy but that doesn't necessarily translate into teaching skills. This class was extremely difficult and his notes that he had us study as a form of teaching were not clear and difficult to follow. Notes are not allowed on the midterm or final. He was forgiving on the midterm and final however.
I took this class online. BIG mistake. Khan Academy and the math tutoring center is the only way to pass his class. He doesn't respond to emails, and isn't clear with what is expected. So much homework and the questions are designed to be as difficult as possible with out actually teaching how to work them. Nice guy but don't take his class!
Garth was an ok math teacher. I have had better, but this math class he was teaching us to teach math and it didn't really seem that way. Some of the math was really confusing and he wasn't very good at explaining it in different ways for others to understand. I wouldn't take him again personally, but others might.
Garth was a very hands off teacher. I took his online trig class, and he did very little to interact with the students -- which is O.K! The material can be tough, and the class takes the extra effort to pick up an A. Garth is not as difficult of a teacher as the previous reviews made him seem. He responds to emails quickly, and on weekends even.
He is rude. I ask for help and instead of helping me, he did not even try and was upset I did not understand the material. He is not easy to talk to. There is not a clear class schedule. I regret taking his class and wasting my money. > :(

Great professor. If youre not understanding something hell be glad to help you. I have taken the three math courses 211-213 with Garth and have gotten As and Bs.
I would recommend this professor to anyone. Garth Fleming goes above and beyond to help his students. I even got some help for one of my 300 level classes from him, and he was more than willing to help. He went above and beyond to make sure he could meet with me. He is very respectful. He gave me the want to learn math and kept me motivated.
Took mth111-113 Easy!!! Lectures for an hour then lets you work in groups. You usually get out way early. Hands out review before test. Review is exactly like test. Very little homework, tests your allowed notes front and back. He does make alot of errors but when he does for tests he removes the question, less you have to do. Show up and pass.
I really enjoyed taking Math 211, 212, and 213 with Garth! Loved the layout of the class. Lecture for an hour and then working in groups on worksheets. He was funny and caring and always helped with any questions I had!

Garth. Is awesome...I loved these classes. I was nervous to take math 211/212/213. I took all three with Garth. He was kind and helpful and I quickly forgot that I did not like math.
I can only speak to his online class; I'm sure he's nice. Blackboard was fine, digital textbook was awful. My biggest complaint: his lesson notes are incredibly cryptic. If I submitted work in the same level of detail in another class, I'd get "please show work" on all of it. If you're forced to take him online only, prepare to teach yourself.
I think he is great especially for the education required sequence. It's a math class to go over basic math concepts and give you an idea on how to teach math. If you cant figure something out he's not a professor that will just tell you the answer. He will ask questions to help you figure it out. Super helpful for future teachers.
Best grade in a math class yet.
I took Garth back when he didn't allow notes on his exams. He is a fine professor. However, if you struggle with math don't take him. If you aren't used to learning a good chunk of the content outside of the classroom I would advise another teacher. Garth expects a little more out of his students, he expects you to find things out for yourself.
Garth was an amazing professor and I loved him so much I took all three Educational Math classes with him! He was very clear in everything he expected from us and I found all of his instructions to be straight forward. He handed out worksheets in class that helped solidify the information and made it so that we didn't have homework piling up. 10/10
I had Garth for MTH211, 212, and 213. He did a great job walking through all topics and went through examples for everything. He prints out outlines for note taking, and as long as you follow along and write down the examples, there's no reason you can't get an A. Each term is split into 3 sections, with a test at the end of each section.
Weekly homework, easy 100%. Test two attempts pretty straightforward. Final was the most difficult part. He switched up questions and you only get a formula sheet that has too many extra formulas. I failed the final but still got a B in the class. So don't be worried.

I'm in his online class taking Trig for the first time. Every email is answered promptly, if you have a super-specific calculator question you can even email him pictures of the mode/degrees/equation you're using. No appointment in person required. This guy is great at communicating and really just wants to see you succeed.
Garths' online class is not finished because it lacks many subject videos.
He is clear with his presentation, teaches the material well, and answers all questions. He is very organized and straight forward. The homework helps get the needed practice to pass the class. He has office hours if you need extra help or have questions.
Professor Fleming is genuinely interested in his students' success. He made it easy to contact him whenever I needed assistance of any kind concerning the course. Would highly recommend him, especially as Math does not come easily for me. Weekly discussions were fun and interactive. No group projects, of which I like! Excellent course overall!!!

Was never prepared for class he was always having to leave class to go get a pen or headphones. no rubrics.
Lectures were unnecessarily long and mind-numbingly boring. Homework is virtually useless grade wise, all of your grade will depend heavily on short tests. Will sometimes grade things completely wrong, and was condescending and unhelpful during one-on-one tutoring sessions. Try to take any other math teacher.
Everything is out of the textbook, he doesn't teach a single thing. He also doesn't respond to e-mails so if you're stuck on a homework problem you won't get help. Avoid taking his online classes.
He does not know how to do the math he is trying to teach, gets confused when you ask him questions about it. Also not very nice when you ask him a question along with not explaining why one question wrong is 10 points off your grade.
Garth cares deeply about his students which is good however, his lectures are just awful. He himself seems to be confused by the lessons he teaches, often having to look back at his notes and cross out his own answer. Trying to follow him is a nightmare and it might be better to spend class time watching a youtube video on said subject.
He is caring with his students. The program we used for math was great and provided a lot of help in solving and understanding the concepts. I think if you're used to online courses this will be a good and easy class. The material is heavy and there aren't that many quizzes. I will say, he is slow in responding to emails, so use symbolab for help.
The teacher provides no content himself and you are expected to just follow an online textbook you could do yourself. A red flag: he requires you to come to campus for exams if you are taking an online class and there is no indicator of this when you register for the class and you only find out once you see the syllabus. That shouldn't be allowed.

Yeahhhh if you take this class online with him, youre gonna have to teach yourself everything. Have fun dealing with a midterm and final that are EACH worth 40% of your grade. Homework assignments are worth a pitiful 8% and they take FOREVER. Youd expect the tests to be light because of the weighty test grade balances but no.. Plz just go with Rick
Your grade will depend on you, Garth was a bit difficult to follow during lecture so I found myself relearning the topics later on but that allowed me to apply the concepts better. He is a generous grader and is willing to help if you are lost. 2 tests, a couple quizzes and weekly homeworks.
The class structure depends on you to do homework so you can understand and ask questions each week. very willing to answer and walk through homework problems in class to help you understand. Also they have a great sense of humor and cares about the students.
Great guy just need to use his office hours. Lot's of homework but it teaches you everything you need. Amazing videos. Comes off harsh but is a nice guy. Give him a chance just be respectful. ALSO GREAT PACKETS OMG THEIR JUST THE EXAM.
Didn't really teach all that well. Used packets as “notes”. Felt like i had to teach myself because the way he taught was confusing. Wasn't a very nice person either.
He's a good guy and has some inspiring insights to share with the class occasionally. We have 3 tests a term (or 4 if you're in the everyday class), which are 90% of your grade. He grades things harshly and though I understand why, it does make passing his class near impossible. The way he teaches is confusing and I learn little during lectures.
Horrible teacher. "Teaches" the entire class from a packet that he didn't write. (Teaching = Writing down everything from the packet verbatim onto the chalk board) Often seems confused about the material he is regurgitating. Seems unable to articulate a deeper understanding of the material. You will be teaching yourself 100% of class.
Unfortunately, he doesn't explain the notes very well, and you just have to copy everything down. You have to teach yourself the concepts. He seems harsh, but is actually a nice person outside of class. There were a few times he was unorganized and would get completely messed up. Be ready to watch videos online to help teach yourself.

I've had many teachers I didn't not like but he takes the cake, he's mean to everyone always in an awful mood. It's hard not to feel dragged down when he won't even answer questions or snap at us like we are dumb. We are here to learn & ask questions but he treats us like we are bunch of dumb kids. I would not recommend, he hates being a professor
Garth is not a good professor, if you are not capable of teaching yourself the material you should not take his class. He is also very snappy he wants people to talk to each other and at the same time yell at people for talking. He is not helpful when you need help and will just look at you like you are stupid. Overall avoid at all costs.
If you take this professor for calculus, go ahead and just teach, lil bro. I feel sorry for the souls that have to endure his unintuitive lectures. Also, don't ask questions that will frame the answer in front of everyone like you're a 4-year-old.
Avoid this professor at all costs! He will sit there the entire class and go over a print-out of his material and it has nothing to do with the HW, 2 midterms or final. Worst teacher I have had my entire life.
Dude this guy needs to retire already, I do not understand how you are going to waste 2 hours of our time going over a useless packet that has nothing to do with the actual homework and test material. Genuinely awful teacher, I wouldn't even call him a professor, avoid at all costs.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life, this was the most stressful class I have ever had, you only teach yourself. The professor at times is learning with you, and if you ask a question be ready to feel embarrassed in front of the whole class, please do not take this professor.
Genuinely one of the worst math courses I have ever taken. He is so rude. He always talks about how you need to work with others and do group work, but if you even speak over him for a second, he will yell at you in front of the whole class in a genuinely embarrassing way.
Overall nice guy, but his lectures are are unengaging and, to be frank, boring. He's not great with communication. I had zero idea what time the 2nd midterm was because the times in Canvas and the syllabus conflicted, and turns out neither were correct. Homework is on MyOpenMath, which is actually pleasant to use, so that's a bonus.
He is a stern yet kind teacher, he prints out notes for you which is lovely. If you do the homework sufficiently it will definitely prepare you for the exams; the exams are significantly easier than the homework. He also gives extra credit on the exams and on occasional homework lessons if you do well enough. All the homework is online.
