ATTENTION: This prof CAN NOT TEACH! Avoid her at all cost. She tries to teach you Spanish, IN SPANISH!! Well if I knew Spanish I would not be in that course!!
she doesnt know how to teach at all!!! she need to study again... she doesnt even know how to speak in english!
Yikes!!!
she does expect people at this level to understand what she wants from them, that's why she teaches in spanish. speak louder, she will ask you few times about what you've said if you haven't said it loud enough for her to hear
She was a good teacher, funny and helped out a lot. If you're in spanish 201 or 301 you should already understand hat she's saying. the best way to learn is when someone speaks spanish to you so you HAVE to understand. And she does speak english if you dont understand, she asks the class if you got it. Good proff, got an EASY A+.
The WORST.... WORST SPANISH teacher ive come across !!!!! She makes life dificult for you
scary!!
AVOID AVOID! She has teached 401 and up but not 101 or 201, and anything that you say to her in spanish will receive either a look of death or a pathetic tone of voice. She makes it hard for just an introductory course! But study hard!
I was the class clown-so I totally destroyed her! It was a massacre for her! She is a very good teacher though with a lot of experience. Highly recommend for SPN 101 at least.
Good, you have to apply your self, but one of the best spanish profs for sure
Prof.Garvida is amazing.she helps you understand the materials. We have weekly quizzes which helped me out for both oral and written exam. She tells you what she wants to see and she is very helpful. If you want to learn the language rather than get an easy mark I recommend her (you will receive the mark that you want if you work hard in her class)
Great Prof...attend all classes so that you do not fall behind. Tests are a little hard, but as long as you do your homework and study you should be fine. One of the best classes I've taken here at Ryerson.
Prof. Garvida was an excellent teacher for CSPN 201. Yes, she challenges her students and expects them to work hard but that's a good thing. Her explanations are very clear and she works hard to make sure the students understand. Her spoken Spanish is fine too, despite what some other student said here. I benefited a lot from being taught by her.
Excellent teacher.Very knowledgeable, and very helpful. She uses textbook a lot, and sticks to the same class structure, which helps a lot when preparing for the next class. She is laud and speaks clearly, and has a broad knowledge about of cultures and customs among Spanish speaking countries. I liked it enough to take the next level.
She is almost impossible to follow during her lessons. She should not be teaching 101 by any means. When she speaks she is very unclear, and you can almost hear the roll of her eyes in her voice whenever you try responding to her questions in Spanish. I am never taking a Spanish course again here because of her.
This prof loves to imitate her students. After a few classes of trying to learn a new language. You start to fear trying as your scared of how she will react. She makes you feel stupid. She is a TOUGH MARKER for an intro course! Try taking with another prof if you have no prior Spanish background.
if you do not like answering questions, do not take this class. She is a very hard marker and can be scary at times. because of her I am never going to take a language course again
Worst Language teacher I have had by far. I would avoid her at all costs. It's not that she's a tough marker per say, but she loves to bully her students. This can be very hard to convince to the department. Run. Run far. Take it with another Prof
I really enjoyed her class even though language is not my forte. I thought she was very clear with material and managed time very well. Also, make sure you refer to the course outline because she doesn't always remind you when something is due. She was very helpful and always gave chances to raise your mark. I highly recommend her !
She was amazing, 100% recommended
Terrific professor, just pay attention in class and participate as much as you can to be in good terms with her.
She's a good teacher, funny at times. Being a student with NO spanish background, I've been able to get more than 75% on all my tests and assignments, so I don't really agree to those who said she's a hard marker. Just pay attention, and review what you learn in class.
She is a sweet prof and means well. Although, she is an EXTREMELY tough marker for a beginner course. She will deduct marks for the smallest things and will lower your average. As well, she is very intimidating and makes you feel dumb if you do not answer the questions she asks correctly. Overall choose another prof!
Great Teacher!! I am not a native speaker but was able to obtain an A average due to her helpfulness. She explains clearly and her tests are not very difficult; they just require some studying beforehand ( 2-3 hours). Loved her!! :)
She's a nice person who wants you to understand how to speak Spanish. If you don't like to participate or be put on the spot, pick a different prof. I never thought that she makes people look stupid, she understands that it's a beginning course. Buy the textbook for sure, attend every class, try your best, and you will receive a good mark.
Good prof! She's my first teacher for spanish and I like her way of teaching. She's nice, funny sometimes, teaches at a reasonable pace. I'm taking SPN201 with a different prof this semester. I'm starting to hate Spanish and considering to drop it. I hope she'll teach SPN201 next semester.
I was wary about going into her class because of all the comments here but I personally found that she was awesome. You obviously need to attend class and pay attention- it is a language course. You need to try to learn the language and you will do fine. I knew nothing about Spanish before- now i can have a conversation because of her! Recommend.
Traumatized! I felt absolutely discouraged to go to her class by the end. Thought about dropping it but it was too late. She seems very nice and caring at the beginning but if you cannot keep up you will start to notice her disliking you. All the comments about bullying here are very true. Avoid if you are not an auditory learner, or you want an A
Very discouraging and takes full marks off for the smallest mistake...
Dr. Garvida is a nice and sweet professor. Learning spanish is definitely something you can't learn on your own because it's hard learning a new language. But the course is introduction so she helps you out. The quizzes are easy as long as you study and practice. Participate as much as possible to show her that you understand and it'll help you too
She's a great, fun, enthusiastic teacher. She is always willing to help and explain. Some reviews say she's mean. She's truly good-hearted, but if you don't pay attention in class, she will (rightfully) get a little impatient. Participation is ESSENTIAL to her Spanish courses. She learns everyone by name so be prepared to get called on to speak!
She does not write anything down for you. If this is your first Spanish class, and have no background on the language be prepared to work hard. Does not provide much help, and she expects students to understand material too quickly. Be prepared to constantly participate. Not interested in taking another language course at Ryerson after this class.
Must show up to class for participation marks. Assignments are very easy, tests are easy if you study. Concepts are taught clearly. Very nice lady but if you constantly ask repetitive questions she will get impatient. Also very funny. Textbook is ESSENTIAL, otherwise you'll have very difficult time passing. 2nd test ended up being open book. Nice
YOU NEED THE TEXTBOOK. And you need to read it. Participating in class is encouraged but obviously you still need to pay attention. Asking a question that was just discussed will just annoy her. Fair marker, and the criteria for grading is very clear. The oral exam was scary but she's very fair. She rewards effort. Would take a class with her again
Firstly, it is essential to have a genuine interest in learning the language in order to get a good grade. You can tell who is there because they thought it was a "bird course" If you read the textbook, do the assignments on time and make an effort you will be rewarded. After this class I could hold a basic convo in Spanish which is great :)
Attendance is a must as she always gives test/exam hints! Textbook is essential too! Her tests are easy but you need to put effort to it. STUDY the test reviews posted on d2l. Makes u look stupid when you ask qns in class but sometimes shes very generous with bonus marks when u participate everytime she asks questions. Posts marks quick
She's quite the character, but she cares about the students learning. She can get frustrated if you don't know your stuff, since she does make a big effort REPEATING a lot of the stuff so that you learn. But she is great. No surprises in the exams, and she gives you A LOT of opportunity to make up on tests. She definitely prepares you for it.
She can be really funny, she likes to say ayayay when you don't get it LOL but with no malice, she just really wants students to learn if not catch up. She's not political by any means and quite honest. But she cares about students learning. Gives a lot of reasonably easy TESTS that will help you accrue marks. This was a great class for me.
Absolutely hilarious. She makes the content fun and straight forward. She replies to emails, posts marks quickly, and acknowledges every student and their questions. Attending class and reading the text is very important. If you practice a little bit everyday you'll do great! Highly recommend.
She is unreasonable in many aspects. Takes no excuses for being late- not even if it's transit's fault. I was looking forward to a fun language class where I could broaden my horizons, but felt absolutely discouraged every time I left class. Seldom gives corrections or feedback, and will not budge on her grades, no matter how good your argument is.
Thought this class was going to be a fun and easy class, but this prof has no chill
Rough personality, but makes you learn the subject matter. She will pound it to you again and again and again and will focus here lectures and materials on what she will examine. (She doesn't go thru the entire chapter). If you pay attention, it's an easy pass. If she keeps repeating something in class, it will be on the test.
She's amazing!
2 midterms you will do pretty bad in if you dont review and practise your grammar, meaning you have to practise and read the Tesis de Nancy, its not bad you have know the concepts. If you dont do homework youll do bad, if you think this is a bird course take a lower level course, please. Theres assignments every week are too boost grade.
Participation in class is MANDATORY. She even grades every class. She gets a little frustrated if you ask a question that she went over but still explains clearly again anyways. She really helps you with any assignments and tests when you go see her in her office. She sometimes does not go over assignments but tells you to read the course outline.
Class is fine if you participate - she favours students that participate in class. She can be a bit of a tough marker but at least has clear grading scheme.
I love her. She has a lot of personality and she seems tough and she does give a lot of homework, probably too much. but she is also genuinely caring, she listens to personal struggles and tries her best to help, and - she is absolutely hilarious. Surprising sense of humor. Nicer than other Spanish teachers in Ryerson.
These other reviews exaggerate so much... she's not bad. She's enthusiastic and really she gives you all the info you need for your assignments. She does call everyone out to make it interactive. So the people who hate her for it are the people who weren't paying attention and couldn't answer questions. Just show up and PAY attention, that's it.
Professor Mignette is an amazing teacher! The previous reviews shows a very misguided perspective on her as a teacher. If you are going to take this course without the general interest in the language and the fact that it's considered an easy course don't expect to do good. She is very interactive and enthusiastic with her students!!!pel
Honestly really loved being in this class and feel like I truly caught onto Spanish quick. Professor Garvida takes time to give good feedback and is extremely organized, also it's very clear what is expected of you so it's not difficult to do well as long as you put in some effort and dedicate time to the course. Also - participate!!
Professor Garvida is a caring professor. I see the negative reviews and honestly yes, she does expect you to participate but that is known on the FIRST DAY on the SYLLABUS. If you try in her class, she is more than happy to help. As long as you make an effort on your end. You must do your readings and practice just like any other university course
Effervescent.
Just participate and go to class, and you will do well. She is a very easy professor, it felt like a highschool course.
Professor Garvida is an amazing and fair professor. As long as you come to class and practice the textbook questions, it is easy to get an A. She expects her students to participate in class because it is a language class and students signing up for it should expect to speak in class in order to practice. She is a fair marker and makes learning fun
!!!!!!! ALWAYS A FUN AND INFORMATIVE CLASS !!!!!! very nice prof. come to class, and participation matters
An amazing prof who really takes time to interact with her students and make sure they understand the concepts being taught. However, this is not a bird course and you need to go to every class and participate in order to do well. If you put in the effort, she will help you as much as you need.
Messy course outline. Class is structured poorly. Too much work for a lower liberal. Only course I've dropped in my 3 years at Ryerson.
Possibly the worst prof at Ryerson. Very degrading towards students and will call you out in front of the class for the smallest things. She doesn't have patience either, idk why Ryerson hired a non-native Spanish speaker to teach this class anyways ..
Dr. Garvida is enthusiastic and fair, and she structures the course so students will succeed which is nice. However, she can be very demeaning when she calls on students to participate, shaming students when they mispronounce or give a wrong answer. This made me passive and afraid to ask questions. Despite this, you'll learn a lot.
If you are planning on taking an elective with her be prepared to work for it. she will make you work for every single point. does not go easy on anyone. I took SPN 101 with her and she made me hate it. ended up dropping it. do not take spn 101 with her she is the worst.
Avoid her at all costs!!!
Spanish is clearly not her native tongue and understanding her can be really tricky, as she does not have a latin accent when she speaks. She also calls on students randomly throughout lecture to answer questions. I would strongly recommend avoiding this class.
Difficult class for intro to spanish. She gives so much homework its insane. She is nice enough but thinks her class is the only class students are in. I had to do 3 verbal recordings and 2 written assignments in 1 week. 1 month in we had to write a 500 word "essay" in spanish in 40 minutes closed book... Short and sweet, She is difficult.
This course is extremely content heavy. You'll easily have 4 assignments due every two days, in the same week. Frustratingly enough, these assignments are worth 2.5% of your grade. She does not accept late assignments either. She calls on you randomly and forces participation--she marks the quality and the amount you participate.
Lots of assignments and quizzes - video presentations, weekly textbook assignments, quizzes, and more. Kind of expects you to know everything instantly or pick it up quickly and doesn't explain things well. Randomly calls on you for participation and you definitely need to attend class or else you will fall behind. Textbook required. Tough grader.
The way some have compared her classes to a high-school course' is correct but in the worst possible way. The course isn't hard but she MAKES it hard, the lectures are looong so be prepared to sit around till 9pm during her class if you want to get your full participation marks; personally gave up on that 10%.
Obviously, you're going to have to participate in a language course. She tends to call on people randomly, so be ready for that. Other than that, she taught pretty well. Gave good feedback. My class was online because of Covid-19. Attendance is important and you have to have your camera on.
Only reason I passed her class was because I had previous knowledge. She requires cameras on and you need to participate. There were so many little tasks to hand in, compared to other spn101 profs. Does not record lectures and grades harshly on the smallest grammar mistakes. She takes this class way too seriously for an intro to Spanish class.
For a beginners course, there should be more patience and understanding when it comes to making mistakes. You get picked on to answer questions on the spot and what gives me anxiety is the fact that the prof acts very discouraging towards mistakes - sighing visibly, being passive aggressive towards genuine confusion. Gives me actual anxiety.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Garvida is very thorough with her feedback which made the class feel really rewarding. You can tell she loves to teach translation and I would definitely take another class with her.
Mignette is an amazing person in life, but a one terrible teacher . Took course from that professor twice, extremely hard to advance specially the way she communicates for newbies like me, impossible to understand better learn yourself, while in a meantime speaking 4 other languages. course would not recommend. terrible terrible teacher
Mignette is a terrible terrible teacher, try to take class somewhere else, for your own benefit, even though she is an amazing person in life
She is the worst professor that I have ever had. Spanish101 supposed to be easy but she made the course like a nightmare. She expects you to be a fluence spanish speaker while grading your paper like even missing a comma costs you a lot of marks. She is not even good at teaching and skipping her classes would be the best way to get a better mark.
Amazing teacher! She made learning Spanish a lot of fun and I would love to have her as a teacher for my future Spanish courses. Lots of tests but it helps you to constantly review your notes so that you retain the information.
She called a student a dog for not answering right and thought it was funny. Tries to force u to keep video on zoom and wants to see ur face. Textbook is $300 and u don't go through most of it, its mainly childish pictures. Forces participation so anxiety is high. Gets mad easily. I did this class with love for Spanish, now I don't wanna touch it.
At first professor Mignette may come off as "rude" since she is strict about student's pronunciation of how their tone of voice elevates and when to pause in a sentence, and such. However, after a few classes she made it clear that she is not trying to change our accents but to help us become better public speakers. She is wonderful & caring to all
Expensive textbook that could easily be free. No recorded lectures. Hard grader in ALL aspects. Forced to learn conjugations to a dialect she has no connection to? (previous course was neutral spanish). Takes marks off for any accents and spelling mistakes. Can be very nice and can come off as passive aggresive (smiles when shes frustrated type).
The textbook is so expensive, she calls people out in class and laughs in their faces if they don't know the answer. She expects us to already know Spanish even though it was a complete beginner course. There are 2 exams.
I find that a lot of the reviews on here are from people who have never experienced accountability in the classroom. It is not shameful to be corrected on mistakes, making mistakes is what helps you learn. Professor Mignette is there to teach, not to baby. I find that she is extremely caring and only wants the best for her students. Love her! 10/10
I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The professor was excellent, and the varied and frequent assignments greatly enhanced the learning experience for Spanish. I would definitely choose to take another course with her in the future!
Garvida is the most accommodating professor I met. But she may not be the best at explaining some concepts, and there is a lot of homework and assignments, it's not hard but it's just a lot work. Take it if you want but don't get discouraged if you make mistakes in-class.
Absolutely the worst prof I have ever had ever, she has a lot of favoritism in her class. She is a really tough marker and makes fun of you mid class for not knowing stuff. She made me hate the course and wishing never took it with her. So much workload and at some point we literally had 3 tests in the SAME DAY. Horrible prof !!!
this teacher cannot teach. Plain and simple. For someone who is a beginner in this course, please do not take it with her. when we ask her a question and actually interested, she purposely embarrasses us and calls us out when we don't know something.
CAN NOT TEACH NEWBIES. SHE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW BASIC SPANISH. THERE WILL BE FAVORITISM TOWARDS WOMEN AND NATIVE SPANISH STUDENTS. There will be native Spanish speakers in this class so be prepared for the bar to be high.
This professor laughed at me during the final oral exam. Completely unprofessional and makes students feel horrible! If you are a beginner at Spanish, avoid this professor at all costs.
If you want to learn Spanish take Professor Garvida's course. Yes, she does call out students (it's called active participation) to answer questions, and she corrects them -- that's what learning is all about, and it helps the other students as well. At the end, you will find yourself beginning to think in Spanish -- isn't that what it's all about?
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She can barely teach, she can barely hear, she confuses herself with what she says and gets mad at the class for not understanding. If tmu wants people to maintain interest in spanish they will force her into retirement or simply fire her.
Worst professor by far I made an account just to rate her. She's rude, interrupts and laughs at students for mistakes, and reads off slides just for you to do 80% of the learning on your own time. Can't teach at all made me lose all interest in Spanish. Definitely isn't for super beginners. Had to drop the course, I couldn't take it anymore
I had her for SPN 101 and SPN 301. Most unprofessional educator. Not encouraging of her students. I called her out for unfair testing (we all failed 2 tests) and after that she made my stay in her classroom very difficult. She sighed and rolled her eyes through my entire oral exam and failed me on everything she could. Would not recommend
