fun class to take with mr. bliss...finance isn't fun BUT he's a fun teacher, always has interesting stories and recently cut off two of his fingers yet he is still dedicated to his teaching
Can't believe more students haven't rated Bliss. Finance is Hard! but he is a great guy. Avail in his office before and after class, funny, understanding, but do the work!
Great Teacher! He is very understandable, Comprehendable, and is always there to listen to any questions you may have or help with any probles. he makes class fun and interesting and clear in his lectures. Not dont think you can go to his class and pass without studing because this is not the case. He is very challanging.Top pick for finance classe
Bliss is the most helpful teacher ever. Knows what he's doing and is there for you no matter what. Has fun and unique ways to teach all his classes and to integrate real-life situations and anecdotes. He genuinely cares =)
Bliss is tough but his classes are rewarding.
A person who knows what he is talking about and can answer any financial question given to him. He can push the envelope if he has the right class.
He is a very nice guy who is extremely passionate about statistics/teaching. He can get carried away in lectures and cover material that is beyond the scope of the class/difficult to follow. He makes those that show up to class feel bad about those that don't which is annoying and calls people out for it sometimes. Tests are difficult, use TZ
Really nice guy. Southern guy with a sense of humor. Go to class, he rewards the people that go. He can also be extremely approachable and genuinely cares about your performance in class as long as you care to show up and treat the guy with respect. Not an easy class but you can pass with an A if you just do the hw and take good notes.
Get the Skooler's packet and you'll be golden. Skoolers is harder than what is on the actual exam so once you get to the exam you are more than prepared. There is a cheat sheet 3x5 flashcard for the 3 exams. Homework assignment due every Sunday and at the end of the semester gives extra credit. Cool guy, and Jon from skoolers is the BEST.
I really enjoyed his class even though I took it online and never actually met Professor Bliss. His lectures are clear and so are his notes. GO TO THE WEBINARS if you have any question whatsoever. He's super helpful and cares about his students that wanna put in the work.
Bliss is the absolute best. Really enhanced my college experience. I supplemented class with jon from skoolers but still class itself was very worth it. I just wanted to get the notecard for exams lol. I look forward to taking Bliss for financial management of the firm!
He's funny as hell and a real class act. Exams are really easy and his lectures are bearable. Go out of your way and get to know the guy if you have him online. He's great
Most helpful professor I've had QMB 3200 exams are impossible. Good luck. But FIN 3403 was easy, pretty fun!
I was absolutely terrified to take FIN, but Dr. Bliss made it SO easy. The exams are based on the study guides he releases about a week before the exam, it's easy to practice with the weekly homework, and we also had weekly extra credit. Best professor for this class, hands down.
This may be putting the cart ahead of the horse but I wanted to forewarn anyone signing up for this class soon. IT. IS. TOUGH. Professor Bliss is very kind but doesn't go easy on you. Get the Skoolers reviews, study your face off and, if you're so inclined, pray.
I wish I had taken him in person, but he seems like a funny guy. The exams are BRUTAL though make sure you study. He is the most accessible prof I've ever seen.
Dr. Bliss is a nice guy who wants you to well. FInance can be tough so you have to put in a lot of time and effort. Watch his lecture videos and take notes before doing the homework, which takes a very long time, but help you learn the material. The tests are just like the HW and study guide questions, and you're allowed a notecard cheat sheet.
Bliss is so helpful and really strives to allow students to do well. I wouldnt use Skoolers, it honestly doesnt help much for this class. Just know how to do the homework and attend the study sessions and youll get an A!
It's not professor Bliss's fault that finance is hard but it very much is. However, he makes it as manageable as possible. He is the most accessible professor I have ever met and genuinely just a nice guy. The Skoolers reviews are pretty much necessary to do well on his exams which, as other people have said, are brutal. Book so not required.
Dr. B was a good teacher. He cares for his students and wants them to all succeed in his class. He always makes time to help his students out whenever he can. His class is challenging but manageable if you work for it. Overall, Great teacher for the difficulty of the material.
Dr. Bliss is a GREAT professor! For QMB, make sure to do all the homework on time (easy points), and study at least a week in advance for his exams. The homework and tests are similar, but there are some questions on exams that dig a little deeper. Make sure to attend his webinars before exams, and I highly suggest Skoolers exam review packets!
Absolutely my fav professor! He is such a funny, genuine, and great professor! Also gives great lectures!
I've had better math/finance professors at community college
Dr. Bliss made finance easy and I was so thankful to have him as my professor. Take advantage of office hours and watch lectures every week. As long as you put in the effort in this class, I see it as an easy A, even though that isnt the typical stereotype of finance.
Gary Bliss is so happy in his lectures it'll honestly brighten your day. His lectures are clear and he explains difficult concepts well. He broke up his lectures into 10-15 minute videos to give you a break. He also makes videos that show you how to do the homework which was useful.
Easy C, with some effort B, gotta study for that A. He can be very rude to students (prof threaten a guy for violation the honor code when he called the prof to say canvas was down and people were not able to do the exam - prof said he shouldn't know "others exam situation") He also ignored many people when canvas when down during another exam
wish there was another professor for this class cause Bliss is not useful at all. if you need help contact TA, but exams are like 70% of your final grade and they are hard! practice HW as much as you can and good luck.
I bought Skoolers for this class and I think thats how I passed. Bliss is a nice guy and has good lectures- his exams are very similar to the hw. The material in this class is pretty difficult though. He is a fair professor and does extra credit zoom lectures.
Professor Bliss was a very poor professor during my time in his class, the lectures and powerpoints are very bare bones and do not go into much detail on conceptual questions which appear heavily on the exams. Certain question types are not gone over either. He is impossible to get ahold of and even told us not to reach out to him the last weeks.
Prof. Bliss is a great professor who wants to help his students. Do not be afraid to ask him for help or his TA's. Homework was due about once a week, and you were allowed a 3x5 notecard on the exams.
Dr. Bliss is a good teacher, his lectures can get boring but he teaches the material well. He provides practice and zoom reviews for help. He always makes it a point for the students to know that if there are ANY questions to please go to him, he does his best at making sure students are learning.
I hate this professor with my whole heart. Never met a less understanding professor than him. Asked for an extension on an exam that is physically impossible for me to take since he only gives one day for the exam and won't grant me it because I forgot to say what class I am in. This is a simple mistake but will now cause me to receive a 0.
Gives you everything you need to succeed. Had him for QMB and FIN this semester. He's one of the few professors where his HW correlates nicely to his exams. At the very least, if you understand the math problems of the HW, you will on the exams as well. I'd say skoolers probably made the difference between an A and B for me in FIN. Nice guy too.
Only issue was his microphone during his online lectures sucks. Other than that DR.Bliss is a great Professor and as long as you are willing to learn he makes the class very straight forward. He posts videos giving all the homework answers and I found those more helpful than the lectures in studying the material.
Professor Bliss genuinely cares about his students. He and TA's are very accessible to reach should you need guidance. He wants you to succeed you just have to put in the effort. Lectures are straightforward and to the point. You get a notecard for each exam and have a Hw assignment due once a week. 100% one of my favorites. Take him if you can.
Material isn't too hard Classes are boring and online lectures are recordings of his computer fan. Doesn't budge at all with his little rules. I'd never ask for an extension unless I was really struggling outside of class, he just doesn't see most students as human. He has favorites so I'm sure if you show up and kiss ass, you'll probably like him.
Professor Bliss wants you to succeed. He gives lots of easy extra credit opportunities and the homeworks aren't too bad and can be found online. I did get skoolers for this class which I highly recommend. Overall, he is a fair guy and though the material can be tougher at times, he makes the tests relatively fair.
Dr. Bliss is a fair and straightforward professor. The class is difficult; however, if you redo the HW enough, the tests won't surprise you. Show up for the extra credit opportunities as they will greatly improve your grade. If you want to do well in the class, you must put the time and effort into it. The material is tricky!
Dr. Bliss seems to be a nice guy. At times his lectures feel drawn out and can get pretty boring. QMB is an annoying class that deals with excel tricks that become difficult to remember on exams. It is nice that he allows notecards for exams.
Dr. Bliss is a great professor who wants to help his students succeed in QMB 3200. Never be afraid to ask questions or help in his class because will always give you a helpful response. If you are willing to study and put in the effort you will do fine in this class. This class in my opinion is easier than FIN 3403.
This guy is awful. His lectures cover like half of what is on the test. Get Skoolers.
Having taken Dr. Bliss for both QMB & FIN, I got a good grasp on his style; organized & expectations are clear from Day 1. Great guy, but did not love his class class. Exam difficulty varies wildly from one to the next. Lectures and hw lacked the depth reflected on the exams. My FIN grade was 89.6 and he didn't round up-OUCH. Very stressful, too.
Great funny professor. Just be prepared to study like you did for financial or managerial accounting.
I didn't like this course. Gary wasn't horrible, but he sure wasn't good. The class was hard and his lectures were bare bones.
Dr. Bliss is a nice professor and challenges you with his exams. Be prepared to study the homework questions and powerpoint slides repeatedly. This class is an easy B but a difficult A. Extra Credit is offered and helps a great deal.
Dr. Bliss is a very nice guy and knows his stuff, but is not a good professor. He goes so fast in his lectures and the information does not help on exams, although the extra credit given is nice. It feels like he expects you to know everything right away. You will learn about financial management better on YouTube to be honest.
Don't get it twisted, this class is very difficult. 70% from four tests and 30% from homework for each chapter. The tests are harder than Gary says they will be, but the second and third test have two attempts. Extra credit is given (1% for each) through going to see guest speakers. Best of luck to everybody who has to take this COB required class.
Gary Bliss cares about his students and wants them to do well. His lectures are boring and a little chaotic. I recommend getting Skoolers or tutoring alongside his lectures to really understand the material. Go to all the extra credit he offers, it really helps! Overall, I got a much higher grade in the class than I expected.
Dr. Bliss is by far my favorite teacher at FSU. He is always so willing to help and cares about his students grades. All you have to do is follow his directions and guidelines and you will be alright. A 100% is easily attainable in an exam if you just pay attention and study. I would 10/10 take this class again.
Dr. Bliss is super caring and nice. He goes off on some tangents during in-person lectures but is much more consistent in online lectures. Class is doable. I highly recommend the online class because he posts many videos going over problems. Take the practice exams, and try not to procrastinate exams. The class gets harder, do well on first exams.
He gave out his number! If you need help you should contact him. His class is fun but sometimes his lectures don't teach I feel bad saying this. He is such a nice guy. To do well watch the videos where he goes over examples. Go to the class before the exam, trust me ;) Homework can take around 2-3 hours a week. He offers around 4-5% extra credit.
Exam 3 is extremely easy, you should be aiming for an A+, which will help. Offers some extra credit. No reason you should be getting below a B- (if you use skoolers). Nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him as a professor at all. Wish he would retire and allow someone else to teach.
Dr. Bliss cares about his students.
Dr. Bliss is such a great person and a very intelligent professor. The content is very difficult, but Dr. Bliss is always willing to answer any questions. The only con of his lectures would be that he moves on and teaches very quickly. Try to review the material often. He also offers some extra credit which definitely helps. An A is attainable.
This class is required for business majors, and yet it was one of the harder classes I've taken so far at FSU, but I don't think it was nearly as bad as some of the reviews make him out to be. Mr. Bliss is clear on what he expects of you, offers lots of help, and even gives 2 attempts on the 2nd and 3rd exams.
I liked him as a person, genuinely nice but his teaching style is not for most. If you don't skip class you'll do much better than if you do, but his lectures are not super helpful. Especially for the math-heavy parts, he doesn't explain it well or at all. He's super accessible and responds to emails lightning fast within his business hours, though
This was honestly by far the worst class I have ever taken. I do think that part of it is because I took it online, but it still just sucked. The content is very difficult and lecture videos often didn't quite cover all of the topics that were tested on. Be sure to take advantage of the extra credit opportunities because it will save your grade.
Hes a great professor and I like his teaching styles, his additional homework videos really help me understand the concepts in his class. He's easily accessible and I think he's really nice. The class itself is hard but if you dedicate the time and study you will pass with an ease
I did not do well in the class by no fault of Bliss. This is a hard class (or at least it was for me), and the grade weighting is 30% homework and 70% exams. Don't take it over the summer unless you're going to make this your top priority or if you are just really good at finance. Bliss's lectures were pretty good though.
Dont take if you dont like math, its pretty much a statistics/calc class using excel. I always thought ACG was the worst business class but its this by far. Professor is nice & gave me an extension when I needed it & helped us out later in the semester but without that I wouldn't have passed, & even then I did with a C. HW on Connect costs $100
He cares about his students. After 1/2 the class took the test early and failed, he gave us another shot at the test. Most professors would not give us that kindness.
Mr. Bliss is a good guy but his class is a borderline time-sink. Almost everything in his class is based off of the textbook he gives including the homework, and lectures. And it does not help that at times the textbook is not very clear in certain math processes, which creates a domino effect for the rest of his resources.
Gary was a great teacher. I had him online and the lectures were a little difficult but that's because I stink at statistics. Not too difficult of a class and the tests are take home (as long as there isn't rampant cheating). Good teacher, relatively easy class, great guy.
i still have no idea how i got an A in this class. his tests are god awful and the textbook and powerpoint slides make no sense. the only thing that will save you is constantly going to office hours with your TA
I liked Gary Bliss as a professor. I think I would have enjoyed the class in-person more. Overall, I thought the class was a decent amount of work, but not too difficult if you can commit a bit of time each week toward studying.
Professor makes quizzes incredibly difficult and expects students to learn on their own. Don't take this professor.
Professor is bad at communicating with his students.
Bliss is not a great professor. Goes out of his way to screw over his students with the difficulty of the exams.
the exams are terrible. the questions are extremly hard and the class idnt worth
bliss is nice at times, but tends to lean toward making the exams too difficult. no go.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Don't recommend this if you can avoid it.
Hard class worse professor
Class was graded harshly. Nice professor, but the exams were rough
toughest graded class ive ever had. good luck on the exams
class is impossible. bliss isnt a professor you want
terrible class, highly recommend against
Does not teach at all during class just yaps on and on about nothing that matters. That being said, he is a very nice guy. He just has no idea how to teach. Get skoolers, it is the only thing that will help. Hw questions are similar but truthfully nothing like the test, powerpoint doesn't help, he for sure doesnt help.
He seems like a nice guy but the class itself and material is really hard to learn and understand no matter how hard you try
Don't listen to the other reviews they are just upset because they bombed the first exam. Professor Bliss is an amazing guy with a sense of humor. He truly cares that his students do well, he is always there ready to help you just need to show up for it. The exams are based off the homework, if you do the homework and really study you will be fine
Don't listen to the other ratings. These are students that failed the first exam. I failed the first exam as well but I can still say that he cares about his students and it's just a hard class. He curved the first exam even though he didn't have to, so if that's not caring about his students then I don't know what is.
This class is extremely hard , please prepare the exam are extremely difficult
Bliss talked a lot about his personal life in class and could not teach the content well. Go to the TA's or get skoolers instead. Take this class online to avoid the attendance points. Go to the extra credit opportunities. That is the only thing that saved my grade after bombing the first exam.
Honestly this class really isn't difficult if you take watch his lecture videos, take notes, and do the homework before its due and again before the exam. He makes the exam questions easier than the homework problems, so if you can do the homework you will be fine. Attend the extra credit webinars.
I ended up doing well in the class but tests are very hard and time consuming. There's a pre homework and homework assignment for every chapter but there are a few extra credit opportunities offered throughout the semester
The extra credit offered is the ONLY reason why I finished with an A, so that was nice. He seems like a nice guy, but the lecture vids hardly help with the hw. He will put stuff on the exam that he does not even once mention and then act shocked when students didn't do well.
For real this time, Professor Bliss is a nice guy at times but he tends to make the questions on his exams worded oddly. This makes the exams much harder than they should be. I don't recommend taking bliss if you don't have to, but fi you do he's definitely not the worst. GET SKOOLERS. It's almost necessary.
This class sucks lol. I'm an accounting major so this stuff isn't really what I'm focusing on anyways. He has good information and you can learn a lot. Make sure to re-do the HW a bunch. Had one extra credit opportunity. Reach out to the TA's. You'll be fine.
Tests are worded weird, no practice exams available, textbook is not helpful, the average for the first exam in my class was an F
I took him for FIN3403 and QMB and passed both with an A. Study the homework, and you'll do great!
Professor Bliss is easy and straightforward. His lecture videos show you how to do the homework and test questions and he is super accessible if you are confused. Not difficult at all.
Does NOT teach. Learned most of my information from the book. Test covered information EXTRAPOLATED from his lectures, he did not explain the actual technique well. Again, learned it from the book. Studying for his class took the MOST amount of time bc I had to self-teach. Expected you to do most of the hw before he even taught the stuff in class
Please if you know what is good for you refrain from taking this class over the summer semester. I feel like in a normal semester, though still difficult, it's a doable class, but taking it in the 6 weeks was actually a form of cruel and unusual punishment (not a hyperbole). Just do it in the regular year and it is for sure doable.
Good teacher but difficult class. I felt confident on the homework but the Exams had much more difficult problems than what were ever covered in the lectures/homework. I felt like I was looking at new material on the Exams to be honest. This class requires a lot of self learning which is too much of a time commitment. I'd honestly avoid this class.
If this class is not a requirement for you, by all that is holy do NOT take this class with this professor. This is the first grade I will receive that is not an A. The exams are nothing compared to the homework problems, and expects you to apply concepts that aren't taught.... Did I mention that you should not take this class by any means.
Words cannot describe how ATROCIOUS this professor is. Let me begin by saying the tests are substantially more difficult than the homework and they are much different than the given assignments. This professor goes out of his way to make things more difficult for you. How he is a professor is beyond me because his teaching abilities are horrendous.
This guy does not know how to teach. I'm usually a good student with a high gpa, but now my grade has tanked and I can thank this professor for it. Just an awful professor.
Avoid at all costs. Might as well not even watch the lectures because you'll just wind up teaching yourself all the information. Tests are very hard for no reason.
I'm convinced any positive reviews here were written by him.
Wouldn't write this if I didn't think this guy was absolutely deserving of an awful review. In fact, this is the first professor I have reviewed on here. I actually created this account to warn others of how bad of a professor he is. I think my biggest problem with him is that the tests are nothing like the homeworks. Would NEVER take him again.
Gary bliss is one of the longest running teachers at FSU, which makes it so confusing as to why he is still so bad at teaching this class. Exams are much more difficult than any practice given. He explains the formula but uses many finance terms nobody knows, and no reasoning.Overall, expect to need a tutor if you need this for your future career.
His TAs are a menace to society and make the test way harder than it needs to be. Dr. Bliss is not good at teaching the concepts and most of the course will be self-taught. He doesn't use a mic in a lecture hall so It is hard to hear with all the squeaking chairs from the 90s. Overall he is a great person and is very helpful with you call him or go
This is by far the worst online class I've taken at FSU. Unfortunately, there are no other options for Business majors and you are going to have to take him. There is homework every week, but the real problem are the tests which are SUPER HARD and nothing like the HW. Don't take if you don't have to.
Please don't take this decrepit dust bag. He does not put his students first and has made his tests impossible and hates giving any extra credit. Also, if you have accommodations he just wont curve your test so watch out. Honestly the class is fine but he makes it impossible to get an A, but not because the material is advanced, its because of him.
Gary needs to retire, he does not teach you anything. Lecture videos are a waste of time and don't be fooled by the open note exams. Test questions are very difficult and are often not even covered in class.
Worst professor at FSU. How can you teach the same class for decades and still suck. Tests are more difficult than they should be. Online lectures are difficult to understand at times. Like he'll spend 5 mins repeating the same rudimentary topic and then gloss over the complex little nuances he'll put on the test. Don't take him if u can help it!!!
Everything the comments before me said is true. Please, everyone do the rating FSU has for your classes and make your voices heard for how crappy of a professor he is. Maybe this will get him to change his ways for future classes or even get him fired! (Wishful thinking I know). Had a 4.0 up till now and I really gave it my all but alas A- it is.
What a rude guy. So full of himself. I don't think you can avoid taking this guy unfortunately. Just do what you're told and don't expect him to be nice in any way.
He just does not seem to care about the performance of his students on his tests which is cause for concern. I also feel like the feedback provided by students is not being considered whatsoever. The same issues seem to be reoccurring: the tests are overly difficult for no reason and they do not resemble the homework or even the lectures.
The class is really just discouraging because you can put in the time to study, just for the test to be completely different than the assignments. It is just really disappointing; not much else to say. Unfortunate that I have to leave a negative review here, but if you feel the same way then leave a comment on here or in the class evaluations.
It is very troubling that I feel unmotivated as a student in this class.I have no desire to even study because I feel like it won't even make a difference on the exams. Was hoping for a 4.0 this semester but with this professor I can kiss that goodbye. He is the first professor I've had an issue with here.
Nowhere near enough time on the exams. Questions are difficult and most require multiple calculations to get one answer. The time that you get is actually comical.
What a waste of a teacher. Rate him in your FSU class ratings as low as possible or else no action will be taken. Why am I paying YOU to teach ME if you will just brag about bringing in your sweaty TA to make "very challenging" concept questions EXCLUSIVELY on the textbook material?!? Doesn't care about student success with impossibly hard tests.
Out of all the required business classes (business calc, financial accounting, managerial accounting, etc) this one was by far the worst. The lectures and homework do not resemble the tests at all. He also does not give enough time on the tests. I have never received this low of a grade or struggled this much in a class.
By far the HARDEST class I've taken. Conceptual questions on exams are super hard and based on the textbook and not on lectures. Watching the lectures, doing well on homework, and even doing them multiple times guarantees you nothing. Exams are nothing like it, they are extremely hard (even if you are good at math) and you are given so little time.
I got A's in both of the accounting classes before this one. You are told you can take the exams online at home with open notes, but it doesn't matter. All the homework is just McGraw Hill, and when I use the "Hint" button for help, it just shows someone using Excel for every question. On the first exam, I got a 58%
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had. The tests contain questions that you have never seen in your life. No help, study tools, or anything relevant is provided by "Professor" Bliss. He is an embarrassment to the university and the finance department. If you have to take this guy, just know, you're cooked. Good luck studying, lol.
This class is actually made me contemplate dropping out. Gary is a nice person, but gives exams that i swear to god will send you to the hospital. The content is nothing like anything covered in class and I dont even think he knows how to do it himself. If he does it takes him 35 minutes a problem to figure out.
This class is horrible. Bliss is a nice guy but this class is actually the worst thing ever. I have taken almost every other required business course, including both accountings, and excelled. Bliss is literally trying to fail a large portion of his students on purpose. A lot of the material on the test is stuff we never covered and isnt in the TB.
He seems like an okay person, but overall as a professor he is not the best that is for sure. He is never consistent with making organized exam study guides, sometimes does not even have one. The test questions are made on purpose to confuse students and waste even more time. He thrives on fear mongering students.
This course took over my life and I still barely got a B. I read the textbook, attended office hours on occasion, went to ACE tutoring, and did the extra homework practice. The exams are open note, but nothing like the examples we cover in class, and the time limit is absurdly short. If you take this class do all the extra credit.
Terrible professor. All I can say is good luck on those exams. The other reviews speak for themselves.
Thought you were done with ACG? Sike. Welcome to ACG 2.0. Bliss's class is like the final boss for biz majors, the class is SO hard and the tests are just as difficult. The HW is nothing like his tests, however, they are open-book this year which is why I passed. Bliss is a nice guy, but it doesn't make up for his class. Good luck.
Terrible professor. Exams are nothing like the homework. Good luck
Bad professor. He does give a little extra credit which helps a lot. As long as you do pretty good on the exams and do ALL the extra credit opportunities you can do well. Bad teacher though
The tests are manageable and not overly difficult, though Test 3 was the most challenging. Typically, the professor offers extra credit, but due to the hurricane, this wasn't the case. Instead, a hidden extra credit assignment with unclear instructions and an unusual due date left many students, including myself, feeling frustrated.
Horrendous professor.Unfortunate that I have to come on here and say this but I had to warn incoming students. Gary Bliss seems to have no understanding of how to teach a class. Extremely unfortunate that he's the only option for this class or qmb.
The negative reviews on here pretty much sum this guy up as a professor. He does a bad job or teaching the material and then on top of that he goes and makes the test nothing like the work that we've completed or the lectures that he provides. Incredibly frustrating as a student. I am extremely glad to not have him as a professor anymore.
This class is super hard. Homework is time consuming and nothing like the exams. Exams are open book which is the only reason I passed. Do all the extra credit. At the end of the semester he announced extra credit in his weekly video then closed it after 3 days or so. Also pretty sure that he posts fake answers to his tests on chegg so be careful.
Yes, these are difficult classes. But I guarantee all of these people in this chat didnt show up for his lectures and tried cramming 2 days before the exam. thats not going to work in this class. i finished both of these classes with a 97+. it takes work and understanding but he is a smart and great professor. take him in person and not online.
If you did okay in the class then wow good for you I guess, but there's obviously a problem when there's this many negative reviews for this professor. Completely asinine to assume the study habits of others just because you got a good grade. Also, not everyone can take the in person classes.
Insane to come on here and shill for this professor. Like congrats teacher's pet you got a 97+ hooray for you. There's several others that also received an A and they appear to disagree with what you're saying.
I did well in this class, but I don't think Gary Bliss is a good professor. Despite what some claim, the tests are somewhat similar to the homework, BUT he makes the tests hard by using verbiage that make you have to decipher what he is trying to convey. I managed to get an A because I taught myself, as his lectures proved to be unhelpful.
To the two people hating on my review and calling me a “teacher's pet”, sorry you don't know how to learn basic concepts in finance and use a handful of equations in excel. Yes it's based on study habits, if you really wanted to understand the material you'd sit and learn and do additional research it rather than complain. Enjoy ur B and C's
Struck a nerve with the teacher's pet. Keep in mind not everyone is a nerd like you. A 3000 level course is not "basic", but yes some of the concepts are straightforward. However, when the wording of the test makes it nearly impossible to apply what you've learned, there's an issue. Enjoy your A that you got cause you got lucky.
"He is a smart and great professor" holy glaze LOL. You know you don't have to suck up to him on here too right? Do you see how many terrible reviews this guy has? He's obviously not a good professor lmao
Terrible. Although he said he will retire. Thank god. Looks like we did something right gang, although sad it took him messing with thousands of students to get to this point. Wish he woulda retired years ago. Tryna be respectful but genuinely hated the experience and resent him for being horrible.
Horrible professor for a difficult class. He would also not round me up by .1 to the next letter grade which just shows you what kind of person he is.
Horrible teacher
The exams feature drastically harder problems than what are on the homework. The homework will not prepare you for what you actually need to do just given the numbers, let alone how to decipher the multi-paragraph word problems used to present the information to you in a 90 MINUTE TEST.
Sneaky and overly difficult prof. Makes exams super difficult to stroke his ego for some sick reason. People who study for weeks fail. lol joke of a class and so was QMB
Awful reflection of the university and the college of business. Not sure why nothing has changed over the years. The reviews are the same year in year out. Did not learn anything useful from his class. Just glad that I don't have to take him ever again!
Nice guy, awful professor. He is like a right of passage for every business major because he is the only person I know of that teaches FIN 3403. Homework and Pre-Class assignments are manageable but tests will most definitely have the godzilla versions of the questions in the homework. Best thing to do is accept this class will drop your GPA.
Nice guy, the online class was not great. It got more and more complicated as time went on. I hated the class thoroughly. Tests felt overly hard compared to work. If you have an affinity for this sort of thing maybe you would do better.
He is pretty terrible, but the class seems passable with effort. The tests are an extreme time crunches, and he takes steps to crack down on cheating/ChatGPT. Minimum extra credit and make sure you know the material for the exam, the questions on it are HARD. He is retiring this fall, and will not be taking FIN3404 until he is gone.
This is the first time I write a bad review for a professor, usually don't because I believe every professors has goods and bads, that is until I took class with Professor Bliss. The things he put on lecture and homework with the things on the test is like comparing a mosquito with an elephant, irrelevant. More to say, not enough space.
If you are thinking of taking this class with Gary Bliss. Just wait until after he retires. I tried to be optimistic but after this class and QMB with him, I can say for certain he is the worst professor I have ever had. His tests are nothing like the class material and he just seems like he hates teaching.
I made this account specifically to tell you never take a class with him. Words cannot express the distain I have for his teaching. It's absurd that he is the only professor teaching certain courses, FSU need to fix this because they are failing their students. I'm a good student but he is genuinely terrible.
Dr. Bliss gets low scores because people don't put in effort to learn the material. The coursework is tough, not the prof. It takes a lot of time—extra for non-numbers ppl like me. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He rewards those who actually try and speak to him. I can guarantee that most of the people leaving bad reviews here have never even talked to him.
He should focus more on actually teaching the material than writing tricky test questions.
Never done one of these before but Gary is genuinely the worst instructor I have ever had at any level. The coursework itself is intriguing but Gary makes the class unbearable. He purposely makes the test questions as difficult as possible and nothing like the homework's and even though they are open note you will fail them. WAIT FOR HIM TO RETIRE.
Straight up, the exams are tough because of the time. I was not going to write a review but since he has been so accommodating and caring since the event that has occurred, I changed my mind. He is a good professor and gives you how to's to the homework with excel sheets attached and goes over tests on zoom. Provided 4 extra credit opportunities.
As a non-finance major this was a tough one for sure, my first non-A at FSU. I did awful on the first exam and then learned how he operates. I would definitely recommend going to office hours and building a connection with him. Definitely practice the minicases, setup hw excels, and study hard. This class is doable. He did offer several EC events.
He was okay. Lots of homework and the exams were hard (mainly due to the limited amount of time he gives to take them). He did host reviews and seems like a nice guy.
Bliss gets a lot of hate and idk why. The class was by no means easy but it was an average class. If you can't figure out the homework he has videos that will take you through it step by step. The exams got annoying when there were questions that included excel files but other than that they weren't bad.
My first B here. After having him for QMB too I can say that he really just wants to make his exams unrealistically hard. The class is difficult in itself but he gives questions on the exam with so many steps that it does seem impossible to finish in the allotted time. If I could have taken the class under anyone else I would've. Do not recommend.
Exams were open everything and he encouraged filling out an Excel sheet with all the formulas prior to the class. No matter how much his lectures may be boring the class shouldn't be too hard.
Bliss was probably one of the worst professors I have had at Florida State. The TA was very nice but it is a sign when the TA was confused why we had so many questions in so little time on exams. Seems like a nice dude outside of class but would never take him again.
This is the most difficult class I have taken. Bliss does a good job at providing in-depth lectures and homework problem tutorials. However, the exams are impossible to finish in time given the difficulty and length of questions. Don't take this class unless you have to, expect a time commitment far beyond a standard 3 credit hour class if you do.
Literally ruined my semester. There's no way out of this one as a COB student. If you aren't a finance god naturally, this professor has no idea how to help you. I don't understand how he has his credentials. He has no idea how to teach students. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but as a student we want a good professor, and he just isn't. Don't rec.
The class is challenging, and the first two exams are tough. Professor is always available and kind, which makes a big difference. To succeed, complete all the homework and minicases multiple times, many exam questions are similar. Each test includes 3 to 4 very difficult questions, so earning a perfect score is nearly impossible.
Gary needs some serious therapy, an exorcism, and reiki healing for good measure. He makes the class hellish by making exams (70% of your grade) hard to finish on time and not reflective of the course. He's obsessed with deterring cheaters & accuses students who dare email him of "harassment"... shows how much he cares about us versus his own ego.
Haha, good luck.
Ridiculous expectations for what he provides. No time on exams for questions that he takes 20 minutes to figure out himself on reviews. Study for days and get to the test, entirely different content. Nice guy, meet with him all you can so you can beg for mercy. Class ruined my summer
You can hate the class, not the professor. Do the homeworks over and over again. Create Excel sheets on how to do every question cause you can use that on the exams. Go to office hours or set personal meetings, he will practically tell u everything on the exam. Great guy, FSU asked him to make the class harder. Not his fault. Great, great guy.
The class is very difficult but Dr. Bliss is very passionate and eager to help those who seek help. Show up to office hours!!! Make your name and face known, show him you're motivated to pass the class he will help you with everything he possibly can. This class is hard, but if you use Dr. Bliss as a resource he will make sure you pass.
Genuinely the hardest class ever. I got a 42 on my first exam thinking it'd be easy since they're all open note. NOPE. The exams are only 90 minutes with 38 questions and every question is all multi step meaning you're taking 5 minutes solving each question and that doesn't even account for remembering what to do. I will probably fail this class.
I love Dr. Bliss, his class is difficult though. prioritize the mini cases in the book when making your excel sheets and go to his office hours to receive actual help for exams. He is a great guy but has to make the class difficult which he realizes and tries to make up for it in his reviews and advice. Material is not difficult, time is your enemy
Please take this course with another professor if possible. Only 2 out of 250 students last semester earned an A, according to professor Bliss. The final grade is exam heavy, and each exam is 38 questions with 90-120 minutes to complete. Nowhere near enough time, by far the most difficult experience I have ever had with a professor/class.
Don't take this class. I failed the first exam with a 45 and I came in feeling more prepared for the second one and I still only managed to do 10% better than the last one. I don't understand why he makes the exams 70% of our grade and make them literally impossible. I don't see how any normal person can pass.
He is a terrible teacher.
Very, very hard exams. He is a nice guy but his lectures are pretty useless and the exams are impossible.
Brace yourself if you need a b- as a finance major. You will have to dedicate TONS of time to just building an excel sheet in order to think about passing the exams. Super kind and caring professor IF you show up to office hours. Grade is mostly just the 4 exams, with the first one making or breaking your grade.
Utilize office hours! Bliss is a very nice guy and does care about his students. If you put in the effort he will do as much as possible to get you through the course. I bombed the first test and was still able to turn my C- to an A-. The EC opportunities help. This class objectively sucks, but if you REALLY front load test prep you can do well.
haha good luck
This man does not deserve the title of ‘professor' or ‘teacher”. He does not care if you succeed in his class or in the course in general. If this class is required for you, do not pick Gary Bliss. You will fail.
Super exam heavy course. Gives no extra credit, I will say is more then willing to help students when needed but still a very hard course.
In frat terms Gary bliss is in bouse and he rushed 3x and didnt get a bid and is an absolute creep-dih and gets no box. wait till his old ahh retires if u can. hes a sub 5 and should ropemaxx
Bliss is not a bad prof, the class is just very difficult. Make a thorough excel spreadsheet before exams.
His exams are nothing like the homework! He tries to deter people from cheating but makes it to where the only way to pass the class is to cheat. Seems like a nice guy though. Also tutoring is absolutely no help at all.
He makes exams far too difficult for an introductory course. He suggests using Excel to prepare but adds unaddressed factors on exams. Extra credit is announced the day of, and if you cannot attend, it is labeled optional when you ask him. I'm concerned about how the finance department manages intro courses with fin3244 being mismanaged as well.
