Great, helpful and friendly teacher!!! Highly recommend.
The Greatest MATH teacher on the PLanet! Soo down to earth! He clarifies things thoroughly! He's the type of teacher who really enjoys teaching, and really cares about his students. If you leave this school w/o taking him u miss out on a great teacher!
great teacher, he always tells you to go to his office if you need help. He's not a hard grader but his final is kind of a killer, but u get a cheat sheet! All around nice guy and very easy going.
writes down Everything, making it impossible to get lost somewhere, plus seems to actually like his job which makes it almost fun to be there. recommend not cutting class much because you can miss a lot and get frustrated, but he's always there to help
He's one of the nicest teachers I ever met. He never makes u turn any hw. And Tests are fairly easy and have lots of partial points. In his office hours, he's very helpful, and if you enjoy playing 1st person shooters, he's fun to frag on weekends.
A very cool teacher. He speaks clearly and takes time to make sure that the whole class understands what's going on, yet he stays on schedule. He is always in his office durring office hours and is very willing to help. Not only did he make math extremely easy, he also hosted HALO on line.
he is genuinely a nice man, he will try his best to help u pass the class, hw is 50% of the grade, no tests only 1 final, quizzes are pretty simple, take him if you can, has a funny sense of humor, great personality and great guy
Great guy. Explainations are clear, simple, effective. I honestly don't see how anyone could fail this class unless they try. Church is funny, will joke around w/class, and go out of his way to help you if you need it. Can't say enough good things about him. If you're taking Math 241, try to get into his class. You won't regret it.
Excellent teacher. I was very rusty with math, but got back into the swing of things by the end of the first week. Very clear and is able to adapt to the needs of the students if necessary (a very valuable trait with any theacher). If you're going to learn math, Church is definitely a go-to guy.
he is so nice he remembers your names and writes down everything just do what he says and youll do fine
A+ professor. so many good things to say about him. he explains math very clearly compared to other professors, and tells you his expectations so you know what to do to get the grade and ace his class. if you think you're not doing good in his class, come to his office and he'll go out of his ways and reteach that section for you. take him.
Church is the MAN. This guy can explain anything, and you will understand it. Put in enough effort to stay awake in class and do some homework and you'll get an "A". Nice guy, very funny, just can't say enough good things about this guy. I just wish he'd teach Calc 251 and 252

Made so many mistakes in class that really confused me. Office hours arent so welcoming either. =(
He's a jerk and he does make hella mistakes. He's nice but nice doesn't help you when all his examples are straight out of the book and do not relate to his difficult questions on his chapter tests. I hope I never see him ever again.
Don't be fooled by these earlier comments. He might be easier for lower maths, but not Calc 2. His derivative hand outs were impossible and sometimes he rolls his eyes at you when you ask questions. More than half the class dropped.
I agree with the more recent comments. I had Church for precalc and he was so nice and easy, but he cannot teach calc2. He doesn't do any refreshers on basics that may have been overlooked by some students. His in-class examples are straight from the book, so going class doesn't really help. I ended up dropping the class.
Church is good
Math 110 is easy, and if you think 110 is hard, just drop out of school
Clear lecture & instruction. Easy quizes. Light homework. 5~6 presentations to show how you solve the homework problems. The textbook we used was the skinnest math textbook i've ever seen. (thinner than a VOGUE magazine) overall, I think it's an easy math class to take. He is friendly and funny too.
he was really great.
great guy...but bad at teaching. he goes tooooo fast.
AWESOME guy!! he tries very hard to see that class is following him. sometimes i feel he goes too detailed when ppl get it already, but maybe some ppl dont get it so he just goes through it thoroughly. he is a happy family guy, which tells a lot about a person. he has weekly quizes which are easy if u pay attention during the week
GREAT TEACHER...! VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND.. HELPFUL AND TRIES VERY HARD MAKE SURE THE CLASS DOES WELL.. GAVE MAKEUPS AND EXTRA CREDIT... AND EVEN LET US BRING A PAGE OF NOTES FOR THE FINAL EXAM.. GRREAT TEACHER...
Take him!!! He is the best math professor i ever seen. Tests/quizzes are easy if u do the hw. He will curve the tests. Just do the light hw and u will get a gd grade on both quizzes and exams. He also offers E.C. which helps your grade so much. He is friendly and nice guy. Just too good to say about him. Take him!!!!=]
his QUIZES are extremely easy but don't be fooled because his TESTS are ridiculous. he puts so much questions on the tests and there's not enough time to answer them. slow paced and repeats everything about three times which makes the class tedious. he's nice though and is a easy grader but it's hard to pay attention.
A good teacher. Attendance is not mandatory but if you miss out then you will do really bad on the tests. He explains things pretty clear and gives you extra credit towards the end of the semester.
He's a great guy and great teacher! Very thorough. You can tell he wants everyone to understand and do well in his class. I would definitely recommend him!
I like his class very much becasue it is helpful and less homework. Easy to get an A.
He will spend a whole day explaining one subject sometimes, but you get it in the end. All the HW is online and you can keep on answering the HW problems until you get 100% on the HW. The HW is harder than the tests are, so if you can do the HW, you pass the tests. Great teacher!
i am not good at math and have been stuck in the nontransferable thing my entire career at csm. But Prof Church knew how much it meant to me to get transfer and get into a transferable class and he made it happen. I took his online course and he supported me every step of the way. He is great and understanding. VERY compassionate
Gary is a great teacher. If you don't know something, he will take the time to explain it you. His tests are very reasonable. Do the homework and you will do well in the class. My only complaint is that the class moves a bit slow sometimes, but some students still don't seem to understand, so it may be needed. Take his class!
Professor Church is a very fair teacher. He is very lenient on homework(webworks); if you need more time he will extend the due date. The tests were never too hard. He gave us practice tests prior to the actually exams. Overall, he is a very nice and helpful guy. I would definitely recommend his class.
If you don't really want to learn the stuff; just know enough to get by...you'll LOVE Gary Church!!! Not a lot of homework, not a lot of enthusiasm, not very helpful. I essentially taught myself out of the book and the web program he uses (which sucks by the way) totally not impressed with this guy.
This guy is the worst 251 calculus teacher. He SUCKS!!! He explains stuff that aren't really related to the HW. The tests are not related to the HW either. SO I ended up dropping the class. HE also uses Wenassign wheich really sucks!!! DONT take him for any pre cal or calc classes. take him for lower maths like 110 or 120!
He was a pretty good teacher and tries to help you and wants you to do well. Nice guy. No suprises on tests. Straightfoward.
This guy is horrible! he is so boring, writes alot of nonsense on the bored and gives alot of HW that's doesn't help you on his tests. His HW is online which also sucks because you only have two chances to get the answer right or else it will mark you down. very old fashioned. I dropped the class because i had to take it again with a better teacher
OMG. I love mr, church!!! I had to retake precalculus and he made it easier for me to understand. He is also a chill guy with a smile on his face. And lastly he is lenient with tests and quizzes.
low workload, not much homework, and the tests weren't too challenging. very lenient and flexible. you know whats expected of you when it comes to exams - he usually gives a practice homework set for it which matches the real one well. Most of the time hes pretty clear, but not always. Kinda boring teaching style, but he makes jokes.very friendly.
really nice teacher, very understanding and willing to help you do anything to pass his class! i only went to class for tests and quizzes...not the most helpful with explaining problems, spent more time reviewing in the math lab than in class.
Church is a nice guy but his lectures cover a very low amount of material that is on the hw. the hw is from the book and the book is HORRIBLE. its online and its all application stuff that he just excepts you to know. lucky, none of that is on the test. tests are easy. he gives you a study guide that is very similar to the test.
Mr.Church is awesome...for those lazy students that says he is horrible...shame on you. College is challenging but he makes sure that you go home understanding the lessons. He spends a lot of time with students after class. I am really amazed by his patience as he does not pull away tests from your hands..Take any class with him...
He is the best teacher!!! super kind and funny.. he cares a lot about students...
GREAT TEACHER.......GREAT TEACHER....
He is so nice and sweet! He's always trying to do his best to help you understand things and is even more understanding when it comes to learning things in a sufficient time. Good guy, overall! People take advantage of himtoo much though ):
Took his online courses. Only communicates with class about 2 times in a semester through email. Grades slowly. This is definitively a learn by yourself kind of class. The Professor lets the program teach the students and has little effort in engaging with the students/class.
Good teacher, stay on top of assignments online, and make time for office hours. He's a really kind man.
For those complainers if you are not good at math don't take online classes. This teacher is extremely helpful and willing to spend hours outside of class teaching. Really fine human being!!!
Maybe it's just me, but there is no enthusiasm when he teaches. The class is decently boring. When you ask Church a question, in class or in person, he answers with short awkward responses. I gave him a good rating because he is my best math teacher so far, but that is not a very high bar to follow.
This teacher is very helpful and a very understanding person. He wants all of his students to pass but you have to show him that you want to do good in his class.
Pretty easy class- online homework and tests. Drops your lowest test grade
He is the worst professor in CSM. Very weird temper, very slow thinking and not good at math at all. He hates students asking question that harder than the book. His classes is so boring, just copy all examples from book. Most of time he spends on calculation, not useful at all. Before the finals, there were only one forth students attend the class
Pretty good teacher. He is fairly helpful but very boring. Maybe it was just my lack of interest toward the topic at the time, which I regret, but I ended up missing a near majority of his classes. You'd have to push yourself to pay attention to him, which is often hard, if you want to learn calculus. He will not motivate you himself.
love him! he is a lot better than any calc teacher in the school! somewhat boring but he is willing to help. take notes and you will do good in his tests. and also, he allows you to use graphing calculator, which is GREAT! for students who want to succeed in calc should take him!
I took this class in the summer and it was a lot of work. Professor Church posted additional videos which were extremely helpful, so if you take this class online with him make sure you take advantage of the videos. The videos are very helpful and you are able to see your grade right away. He will also drop your lowest test score.
He''s the very first math teacher that actually explained math elaborately and in detail. By far he''s the best calculus teacher I ever had. He has a nice personality too. If math isn''t your strongest point take him If you like challenging problems don''t take him. I love how he takes time explaining each topic and the online homework is easy
His class was very easy for me, I currently have an A in the class, I have gotten more than 100% on some of his tests. He takes math very very slowly in the beginning, mostly repeating what he is saying over and over again. But he does take it slow. Tests are just like the homework sheets that he hands out.
Gary is a pretty cool guy. If you go to his office hours, he'll give you extra problems to do and will not stop until you know it. I held an A the whole semester but didn't do that well on the final (totally my fault). MATH 241 is Business Calculus, but Gary is a Science type of guy, but what'd you expect, he was Theoretical Math major.
His homework and his study guides are very difficult; however his tests are the easiest things ever. Do the work and you pass. He's a very boring lecturer, so it is understandable to skip a couple times.
I hate math and I've never been good at it but he patiently explained everything clearly until I got it. He's the kindest person and he's there for you if you need help. He has office hours every day twice a day and he'll stay as long as you need him. Responds to emails quickly, gave me and another guy an extra hour on the midterm, is super funny:)
By far my favorite Math teacher at CSM ( I had four). He's there for the students, genuinely cares about what he's teaching and breaks down every problem into small steps to increase students comprehension. I would definitely take him again If I had that opportunity.
Church was a great professor and took his time to break down concepts with his student as long as the students asked. He also did test prep by creating study guides for exams / finals. May seem dull / slow at first but once the semester continues, things get better. Highly recommend taking
Overall a great teacher who is willing to work with students.
Best calculus professor in the world. Take him and you will not regret. Be a responsible human being doing your homework and taking notes and he will reward you. Exams are too similar to homework, so yeah, do the homework.
I was not going to pass this class because I was missing way too many assignments. I also did not put into consideration that summer courses are shorter meaning every assignment counts. I let professor Gary know that I was willing to make up any work if i even could. He opened up my assignments and now I'm passing and moving onto stats.
I took his summer MATH110 class, and it helped me stop hating math so much. There is no interaction with others on the online class, just homework and tests. Was very fast paced; I had to spend several hours a day. He responds very quickly to emails, and is very helpful. Allows some late work (with penalties), and has clear grading criteria.
Even though, he gave out the pratice test, his test are pretty heavy. If you study enough, you can pass because his test size are small and detailed. So he is kind of tough grade. But his lecture is good and learnt a lot. NEED TO STUDY EXTREME HARD TO GET A UNLESS YOU ARE HELLO SMART
The most boring lectures I've had in my 2 years in CSM. His notes are pulled right from the textbook, so you can probably skip class and still do well if you study the textbook, IF ONLY he wasn't so stingy about attendance. Very unfriendly and boring professor. I'm honestly shocked by the overwhelming amount of positive comments. Don't take him.
His test are hard but do pratice test should prepare for test. lecture is boring but great
Best Calculus 1 teacher I ever had . His test are hard and he graded hard. But his lecture are amazing and learn a lot his practice test should prepare for test.
Church was probably one of the best math professors Ive ever had. His lectures were clear and easy to follow along, and homework followed the lectures as well. Tests are worth a lot so make sure you do well on them. Also if you skip class, its very hard to catch up simply because of the material. Study hard, go to class, and youre solid.
Reviews are close to the exam material. Lectures are important. Easy A if you study all the homework and review questions
He is a great teacher, no doubt. He makes sure that you fully understand the material, but at the same time he makes the class really easy. However, in his lectures he does not emphasize class participation (i.e. having students do problems in class), so you MUST practice in your own time to do well on the tests.
I would say a 3.5 if I could. He is understanding and is always willing to help however, you never touch the book and most of your learning will be done outside of class due to he mostly just proves theorems rather than doing practical examples. He is nice but somewhat boring lectures. His tests reflect the study guide to an extent. He is alright.
TAKE THIS ONLINE CLASS. I am pretty lazy and I still took this class while I moved to LA for the summer before I came back to the bay. There were many assignments but it was not hard at all!!! I didn't feel like there was that much work but each chapter has a due date so get it done before the date. And you will pass trust me its worth it!!!
Assigns a bunch of math problems that are sometimes almost impossible to figure out. Tells you not to go to the tutors for help and expects you to always come to him for help because supposedly his teaching style is the best even though some of the problems are really confusing, by the way, it's not. Expect to basically teach yourself calculus
I've taken a class with him, and he was great, but this is a teach yourself Calc class. He gives you worksheets every day and then he basically expects you to figure it out. I taught this entire class to myself. He's helpful in office hours, he's lazy. This entire class I only learned how to push desks because the the entire class was groupwork.
Dont take him. He mostly gives out worksheets and make us solve by ourselves in groups. Get ready to teach yourself the material!
Took him for Calc 2 and loved it, so I'm taking him for Calc 3 now. He goes through the abstract concepts first, which can be confusing, but he also gives examples and worksheets during class so that students can understand the material. He drops one test, and he's pretty generous with grading. Very helpful during office hours. Highly recommend.
One of the few teachers I've had where the homework was significantly harder than the tests. Honestly had to use Chegg a lot, but he did a great job of teaching the material during his lectures and through the class worksheets that we spent a lot of our classes working on in groups. He's chill and is very helpful if you don't understand something.
Show up and you'll pass. Sometimes boring but cares about students. You will learn the material. Great man.
Online class, basically just pay 70-90 bucks to buy access and do assignment and exams online. He's a good teacher. Whenever you have a problem and send him message, he will reply to you asap to solve it. It's online class so I don't have that much to say about how's his teacher cuz I only messaged him twice during this semester.
4-5 tests, final, no surprises on the tests, very similar to webwork homework. Sometimes quizzes, study early. Explains very well during lecture, sometimes even too much so can seem a little boring. However, does not do enough examples. Gives out worksheets and makes you work in groups. Very caring and clear. Put in work for the hw and youll be good
Took him awhile ago. Nice guy but rambles on too much and not enough examples. Tests are hard.
One of best math professor I have ever seen his lectures were understandable, tests are based on study guid and homework no surprises, if you understand the study guid and do all homework you'll be fine. I am also taking him for calc 2.
If you do not have a strong foundation in math or if you do not prefer having to teach yourself calculus concepts, Do Not Take This Class. Professor Church is a really nice guy, but he tends to teach one thing (seemingly easy) and then assign complex homework problems. Exams are usually 5-6 problems and he's particular about work. He drops an exam!
Great guy but not a good teacher. He taught easy problems in class but exams are hard. 4 tests and final exam are 50%. No extra credit so theres no way to increase your grade. He doesnt have A-, B+ either so your GPA will decrease a lot. I taught myself by watching videos but he was very strict about students doing the problems differently.
His class is very test and homework-heavy. He assigns homework and assignments over the weekend and breaks. His deadline for assignments is very short, only giving usually 3 days. Plus he is very picky when it comes to tests. I would not recommend taking him because he will not respect your time. In most classes, he goes over the allotted time.
won't respond to emails, very awkward in office hours. doesn't guide you the right way as a teacher should to their student in any subject or focus. his lectures are ok until he gets off topic and talks about nonsense. won't help much on assigned homework. oh and won't respond to emails again. why be a teacher if you don't want to interact.
The entire class, I really had no problem throughout the class. I did need to buy a textbook online but had no issue with the criteria. If you really do need help he offers plenty of office hours. Generic course with enough criteria to be ready for my math class.
STAY AWAY FOR YOUR BEST BEHALF. You will not learn any calculus at all. Take Hasson if your at CSM
I asked him a question And he responded with a short explanation and then said that I should know this.
Fine lecturer, but the last homework problems were very difficult to complete
Long and slow lectures, but all the concepts are posted in PDFs you can reference. Homework wasn't particularly hard but each question can take a lot of time - expect to spend 2-3 hours per week. The class grade is 50% tests. Tests are in the same format as the homework. Pretty good class and his replies to questions are quick and helpful.
Loved this class - Got a Solid A. Great lectures, and very well organized homework. Had to memorize trig derivatives tho.
Online Course was extremely straightforward. You can use the materials he provides to learn but you can probably Google/Youtube your way through the hw as well. Exams were generally extremely similar to the hw and in our case, he gave multiple attempts for each test question.
I am taking Math 275 differential equation but there's no this option. Gary is a nice dude and cares about his student's success. If you have any problem just go to his office hour he is always happy to help. In general he is a really nice and hilarious professor.
I had him for differential equations (Math 275). Great class with amazing lectures. He does a lot of group work during the semester.
He's a nice guy and okay professor. He is not good at managing group work situations where one person is not doing the work, overall not bad.
Prof is nice but I didnt like how he structured his classes and notes and didnt provide much dedicated review. Honestly I went to class/zoom for attendance and then just taught myself using the non mandatory red shelf textbook and his notes. Tests werent that bad, but no corrections or retakes. homework is using webwork, about 20 questions a week.
I took Professor Church's fully asynchronous online MATH 252 course and he's done the best job in terms of teaching async online compared to two other async online courses I took. His curriculum is 99% his own recorded lectures (as opposed to random YouTube content), he engages regularly on Pronto and responds to emails promptly.
Professor's lectures were helpful, but the workload was intense. Assignments were due quickly, and exams were quite challenging. However, with the right approach - using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the class materials - I was able to succeed in the course.
He's so monotonic and boring. Has no enthusiasm to engage the class and sounds like he's reading off a script. He also sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Do not take his class if you want to learn something because it is hard to learn with his teaching style.
He teaches from his pre-made iPad notes and circles stuff on already completed problems. No live examples are used, and it is very, very hard to focus on his lectures because he just talks for 2.5 hours straight. It is such a boring and difficult class because you are teaching everything to yourself.
He has changed his grading scale to 50% final and 50% hw. So if you fail the final completely then you get a C/D. The final is also completely verbal. Not awful just conceptual. He is a nice professor just super strict about what he wants from his students now. I would take Ray Lapuz if an option since he's chill and very straightforward with tests
Missed an exam because I got sick. Emailed him twice and message on pronto once to ask if and when I can make it up and my reason of absence and he never answered them at all—and I know he looked at them. Totaled my grade. Do not recommend.
He uses self-recorded Zoom meeting videos from 2021 showing problems he has already completed. When you ask for help, he doesn't care, and when you ask for explanations, he completely ignores you. I would NOT recommend taking this professor at all
