Take really good notes becuse you will need them. On his midterm and final he will give you quotes from certain authors and ask you the importance of the qoutes. It may seem hard but all he really wants you to do is repeat his words back to him.

All I have to say is that I came into the class not knowing how to write and came out of the class not even having to think going through the next 2 English classes. Hard but sit through it and you'll learn so much.

He is an excellent teacher and very intelligent. Has a lot to offer. He can be very brutal, but he can also be a lot of fun. Take notes!!! It is crucial.

Great professor! You must do your home work. I thought I knew how to write essays unit I met Prof. Davis. If you attend class regularly you will learn how to write great essays I grantee it.

Don't let him scare you the first class or two. Although it might seem he doesn't care about you he does, and a lot.! His classes are excellent. You will learn to: "learn a lot, think a lot and enjoy your education."

One of the professors I will never forget. He can be a smart A** but he knows his stuff and does a great job teaching it. I thought I knew how to write essays before I took this class. Now I can say that and mean it. As long as you do your homework, get to class on time, and ask questions, you are golden. I look forward to taking ENC1102 with him.

The guy is awesome! He will help you with whatever you want, and he's always there. Also, he is mean - you just have to have your irony working.

This guy is like Socrates incarnate. If there is someone who will push all the right buttons to help you grow, it is him. There are no two like him walking this planet. If you're meant to learn something great on this campus, your path will cross with his. Thank you PROFESSOR GOD. lol.

He is analogous, to a US MARINE drill instructor. He will be hard, rude, and ironic, you will not like him. But he means no harm, it's all part of his strategy to prepare you better for life. If you are brat, he will wake you up. I will recomend him, but be ready to go to boot camp and become the college analogous of a US marine.LOL

This is the best teacher I've ever had in my life and, for the most part, all of my peers in class have seemed to agree. This man will push you to reach your maximum potential and while it's not always fun, it is certainly worth it. He teaches you what it means to actually get an education. He's absolutely amazing!!

Davis is one of those professors that should be at a higher level University for sure. Community college students can't handle him (at least not the ones who went to slack off). He's very socratic, very blunt, and does not give out freebies. He's worth it though if you can put your ego and your preconceptions aside. He'll teach, as prof's should.

I've had just about enough of Dr. Davis. I have taken his Cinema Appreciation, both Screenwriting, both AM Lits, and 1102. I guess by the fifth class you've heard all of his seemingly idiosyncratic ways of getting into your head. He has to be an alpha dog. He can seem crass. He's one of the best teachers I've had. Take his class. Change your life.

You know that teacher you will always remember, even when you're older? That's Gary Davis. He is straightforward and honest. I truly learned in his class, from essays to life lessons. You must work hard in order to do well, but that is how it needs to be. Life isn't going to be easy. If you want to LEARN english and life lessons alike, take him.

Very strict teacher, coming to class is mandatory he does not sit well with excuses... Overall he is a good guy...HE WILL EMBARASS YOU..but all in good fun...you will also learn many life lessons in this class...I HIGHLY recommend him...he will definately make you feel good about being a student and that you can do whatever you put your mind too!

Definitely a unique and real life approach to learning. Prepare to be mentally challenged and definitely motivated towards your academic career. When it seems he's hard on you, its because he cares - just make sure to do your homework and feel free to ask him for help.

Dr.Davis is a smart dude,he knows his stuff. I had lots of fun in his class. He touches on almost any subject after a hard day at work or life in general. Though he sounds pretty cool, Not doing homework is certainly not permitted, coming late (don't even attempt)and excuses better be valid. Other than that he is..AWESOME!!!!! not much H.W or C.W

He's an amazing professor & you will learn a LOT in this class. Be sure to be open minded before taking him. If you show that you care about the material and not just your grade you will end up doing better in his class! This guy is mean, rude, and also one of the best teachers ever. people hate him because he is honest with you and embarrasses you for coming in late. If you want an east A dont waste his time. If you want to learn a lot about life and yourself take him show up to every class, ask alot of questions, and stay on task. my opinion he is amazing.

I took his ENC 1101 and 1102 in the same semester. I have to say he is a very good teacher. I learned a lot from him. You will have a blast. In his class attendance is very important. Don't take his class is your are lazy. This class requires a lot of reading and some writing. The biggest part of writing in his class is the finals. GREAT TEACHER!

Incredible professor.. Leaves you thinking and analyzing yorself and surroundings for years to come. Don't bother taking his class if you are not up for a challenge. Dry humor, sarcasitc but real! Let's hear it for NY! What dreams are made of! Lazoids need not consume his time.

He eats his boogers and likes Obama. Need I say more? Oh wait, there is more! He also supports the war in Iraq! But it doesn't get in the way of his teaching. He's a very open minded professor. He will open your eyes to new ways of thinking. He forces you to analyze what you believe, and points out the flaws in logic, but doesn't judge.

If you would like to go to college to learn, this is your teacher. Forget how much goes in to the class, with Dr. Davis class you will leave a better writer and communicator.

Dr. Davis is an incredible professor! His teaching techniques are not that of a normal Proff. He will embarrass you in the most constructive of ways. Davis is full of knowlege, extremley skilled and will teach you to teach yourself. If you think of yourself as an average student, after his course you will exceed the average. Take the challenge!

Very strict prof. Helpful to your overall academic experience. Highly recommended, but you must take his course seriously. Don't take his comments personal, he means well. I got an A, but I had to work for it and I was not sure if I would get an A.

His teaching style is one that may be easily misunderstood, making some students feel bad and dismiss him as "mean." If you don't "get it" by the end of the course, you're probably not a very good student. Dr Davis is a credit to his profession who pushes students to do their very best. If you want to learn how to THINK, take his class!

He is very opinionated. Do not think twice about contradicting him, your opinion is ALWAYS wrong. He is very single minded. But overall he is a good teacher. He disrespects student and is pretty vulgar in his class. He always says 'read a lot think a lot learn a lot' prior to leaving his class. This class is not difficult.

If you want a challenge and have a desire to learn, then you need to take any class with Davis. Not only does he recognize your great work he also pushes you far beyond your limits; unlike any other teacher at MDC whom I've encountered. As long as you do all your work and come to class prepared to input then you will be guaranteed an A+

The BEST MDC has to offer!!! He's tough but very well intended. Absolutely NO tolerance for BS, he WILL drop or fail you if you miss too much or if you don't do your work. But If you follow instructions, you will be a better writer and student after taking his class. Took 3 classes with him! Loved every class!!! Highly recommend him.

If you're just in it for the credit, GET OUT! if you are serious about learning, he's the very best MDC has to offer. Has dark humor, is brutally honest, and totally a no nonsense guy. But he's funny and you'll surely be a better writer by the end of the course. Just do as you are asked and you'll be fine. I really enjoyed his class. He's great!!!

I took ENC1101 back in the fall of 2007 and I am now in graduate school, long and far away from Miami Dade. However, I can tell you this, Gary Davis is by far an amazing educator. I am not coming on here to boast about him or what not, I am just coming here to tell you that the quality of his teaching is not even found in some of the best schools.

I took ENC 1101 & 1102 with him, Prof Davis is not easy but he is willing to help you if you ask! He might appear mean but I promise you its only tough love, he really does have an interest in his students as long as they show interest in the class!

100% agree with the person below. I myself am also in graduate school and took Davis back in 2008. To this day i have not forgotten about this teacher because of what he taught me. Baffling. One thing i remember clear is DO NOT BE LATE. This teacher is the best of the best.

Extremely smart professor. Honestly, if you're not looking to work hard, do not pick this teacher. He is amazing and very good at what he does, but he is harsh at times, and BE ON TIME for his class! Has a bit of a dark humor, but is an amazing teacher.

Great professor. It is a challenging class and pushes everyone to do their best. He does pick on people, but he doesn't do it with bad intention. He's very smart and everything you discuss in class has a purpose. He will make you think and he will make you a better writer. Don't be late or else all eyes will be on you.

best english professor ive ever had , no he's not easy but he's fun and his jokes ae hilarious , he's compassionate lenient at times and so caring , i wish all teachers were like him. we all need that push , although his push feels like a shove lol

Professor Davis is by far the most motivating and inspiring professor I've ever had. He changed me in a very positive way. He made me want to punch him in the face a couple of times, and I was close once, but he knew what he was doing. If you want to be challenged, if you want to grow, take his clas.

lIFE-CHANGING. He is one of these rare people you meet in life. He exhibits a tough-love approach, and can at first seem initimidating, but he is a sweetheart. I love him.

If you don't want to suffer the consequences of being alive DON'T TAKE HIM. Homework IS MANDATORY (You don't do it, you don't pass the class). However, if you want to step up your life and LEARN SOMETHING, you should take him. I promise he will give you just a few short homework BUT you must DO IT! That old fat bowl guy changed my life forever :')

Super hard professor and tends to have a "strong" personality which most might find offensive. He is actually very smart and makes you think unlike any other professor. So, unless you want an easy A without learning anything, then don't take him.

He is a good teacher. Do not take him unless you are a professional writer. He is super aggressive. Don't be late. He will take the best out of you, if you don't have time you will fail the class. He does not believe in A. If English is not your first language don't even think in taking him.

Simply put- Dr. Davis challenges you to do and be the very best you can. He's tough, aggressive, and yes, borderline obnoxious but this is all for you benefit as he is one prof. that wants students to come out the other end having actually learned something. I took his class back in 2009. Currently attending law school and about to graduate. I often look back at the professors who have made an impact in my life. This is one of them. Here out of curiosity to see if he still teaches at MDC. Disappointed to see some of the comments left here. He is amazing. Builds character. Get over it and get to work.

VERY educating course. At first intimidating. 2-3 lectures in, LOVED the guy/class. Petrified day 1 just hoping to pass; end of course I wanted more! Took 3 courses w/him, got A's. You'll work and you'll learn. Show up, engage, you'll do well. He's a smart, no-nonsense guy from NY w/a sense humor. You'd be glad to have had him as mentor. Amazing!

If you want the best this is it! But, it is a no-nonsense class/professor. You have to put in the work and be ready for class. And, do not miss a single lecture. First lectures you may feel fear, maybe even dislike him, but by lectures 3 or 4 you will LOVE him/class. Dr. Davis is an amazing professor! You will learn to write well, & love it!

Attendance matters, turn in assignments on time, pay attention and you will do well. This is a no nonsense guy but with a great sense of humor. You will learn a lot: his class is interesting and fun, you will miss it the day after it ends.
